Upright Bass
The Upright Bass samples were recorded in Vienna's Silent Stage with Bernd Konzett, a well-known jazz bassist from Vorarlberg, Austria. After numerous test recordings, he equipped his 4-string, 44.49"-scale bass with thinner E and A strings, along with thicker D and G strings. All the articulations are pizzicato; they include staccato, portato, and sustains with various vibrato strengths, as well as performances such as legato, fast and slow glissandos, tone repetitions, and also special ghost-note performances which have not been available — until now. The Upright Bass sample set is rounded out by snaps, performance noises, and other natural effects.
Concert Guitar
The Vienna Concert Guitar is one of a kind. This gorgeous-sounding instrument was handcrafted with an arched back consisting of several pieces of premium tonewood. Its homogeneous, beautifully balanced sound lets this guitar stand its ground as a solo instrument as well as an ideal accompaniment partner. The concert guitar's inherent polyphony presented a special sampling challenge, in that chords sounded their realistic best when the chords themselves were sampled. But the Vienna Symphonic Library team was up to the challenge and succeeded in capturing the concert guitar's versatility and its various performance techniques. The guitarist, Thomas Meitz, spent over a year in developing the Library's structure. Drawing upon his practical background as a recording engineer and VSL's chief editing engineer, Thomas was able to realize his concept without compromise. You'll be amazed with the result — we know we are.
Overdrive
And now for something completely different. Picture, in your mind, a brilliant guitarist playing fluid legato solos and awesome power chord grooves on a state-of-the-art solidbody electric, through the finest classic tube amps and cabs, expertly mic'd and recorded in Vienna's Silent Stage. Can you expect that level of visceral realism from a sampled guitar? You bet! VSL Overdrive, one of the most intriguing collections in Vienna Symphonic Library's years of sampling experience, makes it a reality. With Overdrive, you create your own signature riffs, while pushing the boundaries of technical feasibility. Overdrive includes around 6GB of samples, including Vienna's unique Performance Elements, featuring a distorted 7-string guitar. Along with various short and sustained notes, power chords, slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs, picked notes, and more, you also get a truckload of effect samples like octave runs, feedback, scratches, and e-bowed notes. It's all scrumptiously fat-sounding and delightfully dirty. And because this is a 7-string axe — a premium Steve Vai model, no less, repetitions and sustains start on a low B (extending the range of a standard guitar down a fourth).
