Projectors
Projector Use-Cases: Why Would I Need One?
Today's screen projectors aren't just for boardrooms. These versatile multimedia tools make it possible for anyone to create an immersive at-home theater experience, host outdoor movie nights, enhance conference room presentations, and provide precise visuals in large auditoriums. Screen projectors can also add a new dimension to gaming setups and level up local co-op gaming in ways our younger selves could have only dreamed possible.
DLP, LCD, and Laser Projectors: Which Option Is Right for Me?
The three main types of video projectors you’ll find at Sweetwater are DLP projectors, LCD projectors, and laser projectors. We’ll walk you through each style and explain its advantages.
DLP (Digital Light Processing) projectors
This projector style uses a high-powered lamp (typically an incandescent bulb) to shoot light through separate red, green, and blue filters that are later merged for RGB projection. Light hits the filters through a fast-spinning rotary disc or series of prisms. Colors are combined using a mesh of microscopic mirrors for each color to create “pixels” in the projected image.
Advantages: low maintenance, small size, reduced visible pixelation, deep blacks, theoretically long life due to replaceable light source
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) projectors
This technology works much the same as the DLP projectors above, only it substitutes the micromirror mesh for a series of pixel-size LCDs. Each LCD can be turned on or off to allow light to pass through to generate RGB projection.
Advantages: quiet, cool, high saturation, accurate coloring, good brightness, affordable, any flat surface is good for viewing
Laser projectors
Laser-based video projectors account for the market’s latest and fastest-growing projection technology. A laser projector’s focused beam results in a longer throw and requires fewer optics for the light source to travel through. Additionally, a narrow wavelength allows for better separation and specification of color. Finally, many laser projectors can be placed very close to a projection wall or screen without suffering loss of visual clarity compared to the above two designs.
Advantages: best color and contrast, low maintenance, instant on/off, versatile mounting options (including up close), reduced fan noise and heat compared to incandescent lamps, no “gray period” due to aging
What Type of Video Projector Is Best for Home Use?
Laser projectors have the most to offer new and novice home operators. These video projection systems provide excellent color and contrast and are low maintenance. Plus, their instant-on convenience makes them hard to beat for impromptu series binges. We'd recommend a 1080p or 4K laser projector with at least 2000 lumens to ensure images are bright and clear, even if it's a show with a dark color palette — we're looking at you, Sopranos.
Projector Lumens
How many lumens is good for a projector?
Lumen requirements can be a complex calculation. They’re based on the specific projector, the room it’ll be used in, the size of the screen, the distance of the audience, the type of projection, and the ambient light of the room.
A good reference is the foot-lambert (ftL). This unit of measurement has been used by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) to determine optimal projector performance. The group found that 16ftL was the minimum luminance requirement for a dark commercial movie theater. For bright trade shows, hotels, and houses of worship with ambient light present, you may require up to 60ftL.
While foot-lamberts aren’t the whole picture, the measurement should give you an idea whether your projector is within range for your venue. To determine foot-lamberts, use this formula:
Projector lumens ÷ screen square footage = foot-lamberts
How many lumens do I need for an outdoor projector?
Outdoor projection can be a challenge, especially with other light sources (moonlight, street lights, headlights) around. Our best recommendation would be to opt for a 3000-lumen projector for screens under 100 inches. This will give you adequate headroom to accommodate less-than-ideal viewing environments. For screens 100 inches and up, look into a projector with at least 5000 lumens to ensure a bright and clear image even in challenging lighting conditions.
Projector Screens
Do I Need a Separate Projector Screen?
Any clean, flat, reflective wall or surface can be projected on. But keep in mind that a projector screen is key to getting the maximum brightness, color balance, and clarity from your video or display. If the client’s budget permits, then our Sales Engineers usually recommend a projector screen for most use cases.
What Are the Best Projector Screens for Indoor/Outdoor Use?
Indoor projector screens
For indoor use, fixed-frame and retractable projector screens are our most popular options. Fixed screens are permanent fixtures, which suits them best to dedicated home theaters and conference rooms. Flex spaces and rec rooms may benefit most from a retractable screen. These can be manual or motorized and roll up out of view when not in use. Challenging indoor lighting conditions may call for an ambient light–rejecting (ALR) projector screen designed to enhance picture quality in rooms with excess ambient light.
Outdoor projector screens
For outdoor use, portable projector screens have the advantage. These screens are easy to transport and set up, making it easy to mobilize your projection system from one event to the next and protect it between seasons.
