Mark Tuura vocal pedal

By Mark T. from North Aurora, IL

I e used all the vocal pedals. The TC Acoustic is the best most reliable performance ready pedal for vocals in the market. All the other pedals add complicated layers of features which break the flow of creativity compared to this cruiser

Great unit!

By Tom D. from New Jersey
Music Background: Gigging musician and ecording engineer

I have to say that I was skeptical about it after trying out several other pedals I landed on TC Helicon and it has been fantastic. I find it easy to use with a variety of presets that work well for me. After dialing in the mix, the harmonies sound full and blend in nicely. I've had a lot of people coming up to me at gigs wondering about the "background" vocals and complemented the sound. I'm happy with the product and I've been using it for a couple of years now.

I wish I know before buying

By Angel M. from CYPRESS, TX

Good sound, but limited for live looping workflows

Great vocal harmonies and solid overall sound quality. The unit is compact and convenient for singer-songwriters who want guitar and vocal effects in one place.

However, if you plan to use looping and harmonies together in a live performance, there's a noticeable limitation. The pedal doesn't handle switching between looper controls and harmony/effect triggers very smoothly. You often have to "choose" between managing your loop or activating harmonies, which can interrupt the flow during a song.

It works best if you keep things simple—use looping in specific sections and pre-set your harmonies instead of trying to control everything in real time.

Overall, it's a great tool if you adapt to its workflow, but not ideal if you want full control over looping and effects simultaneously.

TC helicon Acoustic Play

By Ray L. from Saudi Arabia
Music Background: Busker

One of the best gadgets for playing music, it gives you power to perform.

and provides a very wonderful resonance to your vocals and guitar.

It also provides vocal blending in one step only.

Again, I'm loving it!

Small but so powerful!

Beware, software no longer supported

By Matt H. from Jackson, TN

I bought this pedal because I was looking for an all-in-one solution to play open mic gigs. I've purchased many TC helicon products before and personally really liked the ecosystem. Although this is not technically a legacy product, it's practically on the verge of becoming one. There is no software support anymore. The pedal itself is great, but you can't make any updates and you can't use the software to organize your files. If you're happy with that, by all means get the pedal, but without the software support, it's a no go for me. Had to return this one.

Great Tool For Solo Live Performance

By Gary from Glendale AZ
Music Background: Studio Owner, Musician, Songwriter, Producer, Recording/mixing engineer

I've been playing around with this for about a month, and I definitely wouldn't want to be without it for live performances. As long as it's used sparingly - not too much delay, reverb, or harmony - it is perfect for 'thickening' vocals, and adding just enough harmony where needed. The onboard loop feature is really nice. It allows you to loop guitar and vocals, and do overdubs for each, which is really nice for certain songs. The sound quality is great for live applications, but I wouldn't be using it for studio/recording work. There are a few reasons for the 4 STAR rating:

- The computer interface is pretty much useless with apple computers. I've used two different macs, with different operating systems, and neither will transfer or edit data to/from the Play Acoustic. I contacted product support and was told I should use a Windows machine, because the unit doesn't work well with macs. So . . . . . there you have it. It's not deal killer, but makes editing and saving patches a bit less efficient.

- The loop function has to be activated and deactivated by simultaneously depressing both the left and center buttons. Again, not a deal killer, but really not the easiest to do using your foot. I purchased an optional TC Helicon Switch 3 specifically for optimizing the loop function, and the Switch 3 is a necessity - in my opinion.

- Loop time is limited. I'm not sure of the exact time allowed for looping, but I believe it's about 30 seconds. So, keep that in mind.

- All the mix parameters (guitar volume, FX volume, Harmony volume, etc. . . . ) are global, which means the changes to these cannot be stored to different patches. Changes made to these parameters and saved in any patch, will be automatically saved to all the other patches, so that's kind of a drag, but again not a deal killer.

- Great for solo musician/singers. Not recommended for ensembles or bands.

I'm glad I bought it. I enjoy using it. It enhances my live performance. It's well worth the price.

Recommend

By Ray from Arizona

I use mine for solo guitar/vocals mostly for church. I send both signals to a powered speaker so it's like a small PA. The looping is only a few seconds though, so I use a different looper. I never perform without this and it's still solid after a few years. If something happens to mine, I'll replace it immediately.

Works great - highly recommend

By Ray T. from Tempe, AZ

I use this mostly to play solo at church and the occasional small corporate thing. I've performed with it for a few years now and it's as advertised. Still works and I have no complaints. I run this directly to my QSC and it sounds fine - no need for a mixer. I don't go crazy with effects or looping so it's perfect for what I do.

By Sweetwater Customer from Virginia

TC Helicon Voice Play2, the support app for this product does not work. TC Helicon has no phone support, and submitting a ticket for support yields no response. I have bought and returned 2 TC Helicon processors. Probably should have known better.

Great pedal

By Brian B. from Indiana
Music Background: Studio Tech, Performer

This is one of the best vocal and guitar processors I have run across. The only thing better than this is the Sweetwater service. Second to none. This makes my guitar sound like it should. Like I want it to sound. It is amazing. And for vocals, its about as close to studio quality that you will find. I love this pedal. Best piece of equipment that I have bought in a long time. The only thing better, the SWEETWATER touch. You guys are the best. Thanks Matt. Always there when I need him, and always helpful. Its like having your own sound engineer. These guys are top of the line.

Just can't beat the performance or the value.

By Steve from Janesville, WI
Music Background: Part-time Professional

I have been using the TC Helicon VoiceLive GTX since it came out many years ago. Thought it was time to get a new pedal as I feel I am pushing my luck a bit on the lifespan of the GTX, even though it's currently still working fine. I do 50 -60 gigs a year now days, mostly wineries & breweries.
The PlayAcoustic is very similar, yet different than the GTX. If you are not a "tweaker" on your sound it may not be for you, but if you spend some time to dial in your guitar and vocal effects, you simply cannot beat this unit, both in sound and in value. As with any menu based unit, there is a learning curve, but it's pretty intuitive and should not take you long to figure out.

Great pedal, but would be better with midi

By James A. from KNOTTS ISLAND, NC

This pedal does everything I want it to do except one thing... operate via MIDI. If it had midi functionality it would be perfect. It would be so much more convenient for it to be able to interface with my setlist program and automatically change the settings to match whatever song I pull up. One of the big reasons are harmonies. I find the listening feature a little iffy at times. The harmonies are spot on, though, if you set the key manually. It would be awesome to be able to have the key change according to the song I'm playing automatically. That's really my only gripe. Everything else is pretty great. All of the effects sound fantastic. I love the body rez feature. Harmonies sound as good as anything on the market. Add MIDI capability in future versions TC! Please.

Not impressed

By B from Savannah, GA
Music Background: Professional Musician

Got this thing cause of all the hype but it is not for me. Too many presets and not user friendly. It kept reverting back to factory settings and is not good for a gigging musician that needs to have a consistent sound and not have to adjust setting in a wonky menu for every song. way to much set up time involved.

Intermittent Hum

By Derek from California

I had high hopes for this unit. But when I get to the church gig, I'm hearing a hum, which was def the unit itself. I tried it again at home thinking it could have been something with the church's sound system and got it a again. It's useable. Also found the presets to be a tad corny and unnatural. For that kind of money it should be amazing, but not the case. Also, I see that they've been 'out of stock'. I think that means discontinued, which makes sense.

TC-Helicon VoiceLive Play Acoustic Guitar and Vocal Effects Processor Pedal

By Bob R. from Cleveland, OH
Music Background: Guitar player for 40+ years

Although I'm still breaking myself in to using the VLPAG&VEP I like it a lot. It clearly has great potential although learning through the manual is slow and awkward because there are many words that I do not know the meaning and I'm forever looking them up. I may want to talk to Sean about this. But so far I am basically satisfied with my purchase.

Couldn’t be happier! Great Pedal!

By Michael C. from FORT MOHAVE, AZ
Music Background: Worship Leader, been playing guitar for about 50 years.

The pedal arrived 3 days after ordering it. That's one reason why Sweetwater is the best! So I got it on a Tuesday, but couldn't try it until Friday because I work out of town and get home too late. So I set it up on Friday which was a breeze.Took about 30 mins total. Dialed in a couple great vocal and guitar effects, and used it on a song I had written. It totally improved the song, and the harmonies were perfect sounding with little editing to them. I recordered the song on my Zoom Q2n-4k video recorder, and did a quick edit in Nero and posted it on YouTube. I tried several times to include the link to the video, so you could see for yourselves how quick and easy it was to dial the pedal in and get great results for both vocals, and guitar. But it just would not let me submit it. I tried several times and when I tried to submit the review the screen just turned white, and would stay that way. I tried several times to resubmit it and a pop up came up asking me if I was sure I wanted to resubmit it. I would click ok, and back to the white screen? So I guess you will just have to take my word for it.But here's my YouTube page "HumbleHeartMinistry" if you want to go to YouTube and put that in the search, it should come up. This pedal is worth every penny! It is super easy to use, and sounds fantastic! I seen some of the other reviews complaining it is too hard to dial in, and all I can say is, perhaps they are trying to use it with wrong equipment, or just don't understand how to setup stuff correctly or something? I found it very easy to dial in. Anyways the pedal rocks! I definitely recommend it! If an old guy like me has no problem setting it up for great results, then certainly a person who grew up in this tech environment should have no trouble! Now hopefully this will submit this time!

Great product. However, it will not connect to Internet and Support sucks

By Steve

I'm giving this a bad review even though I love the product and features. Works great! The harmonies and incredible and my Taylor guitar sounds great.

Guess what? I tried to update the firmware on the device by downloading VoiceSupport 2, plugged in my Play Acoustic, and received an error saying No Internet Connection.

Thought it was my machine. Tried another computer. Same issue. Searched online and others are have been reporting this for 2 years! I submitted a ticket and they just closed it saying they are aware and working on a fix. For 2 years?

I connect recommend TC Helicon. Any product at this point. I'm returning my unit and will never purchase from them again.

You have been warned.

Nice Pedal with Awkward Back

By Burke I. from Henrico, VA

This thing sounds great live or in the studio, for vocals and guitar. It takes a long long while to get it the way you want it though.

The other thing I dislike is that unlike every other pedal in the universe where the input is on the left and the output to the right, this is backwards, so your guitar cable coming from the left has to hang over the device to get to the input. Bad design flaw.

I'm very pleased with the TC Helicon Play Acoustic. So far, I've only used for my personal enjoyment but small gigs could be coming. I'm sure I have only scratched the surface of what this can do but so far, I've even enjoyed just learning how to adjust and mix the effects I like. 4 stars because it appears that there are a lot of presets that I (a seasoned player) will not be using.

Excellent Product Backed by Amazing Customer Service

By Sweetwater Customer

This is a great product, same as my other TC Helicon products. However, this is the first I have ordered from Sweetwater. I must say that I am very impressed with the customer service experience with this purchase. Not often you get a personal sales associate when you purchase things online, but it has been very refreshing. I will definitely look to purchase from Sweetwater again in the future as I add more toys!

Unprofessional guitar quality for the price

By Sweetwater Customer

For a $ acoustic vocal pedal I expected professional quality. The harmonies sound nice though headphones and that's the best thing I have to say about this. The vocal side is alright although the autotune is nothing to write home about some of the harmonies are pretty cool but it doesn't sound great when recording. My main problem I have with this pedal is the guitar side of things, it hisses, hums and cracks when I play guitar. After hours of messing with it, the problems randomly went away and came back the next day. Personally, I'm about done spending time with it. As a vocal pedal on its own it could sound nice on some songs but as a guitar pedal it kinda sucks really bad

Garbage

By Steve T. from Lake Orion
Music Background: Professional Musician

I purchased the Play Acoustic to replace my old Digitech Live Vocalist. I was hoping the Play Acoustic would be plug and play and easy to use. It sounds terrible. There is no "Guitar Through" option. Just a quarter inch "Guitar In" and an XLR "Guitar Out." The signal was VERY weak, and when I tried turning up my Bose PA to compensate, I got instant high pitched feedback. The presets sound weak and cheesy. The menus are a nightmare to try and navigate. It added a delay to my guitar signal that I could not figure out how to turn off. There is no manual, just a "Quick Start Guide", which is more or less useless. I spent an hour trying to just dial in a decent sound to no avail. I tried to contact TC Helicon, thinking I could get some phone support, but there is none. Wrapped it back up, put it back in the box, sent it back. Very disappointing.

Just okay

By Paul from Minnesota
Music Background: performing songwriter/pro

I own two TC Helicon vocal harmonizers - the "Play Acoustic" and the "Voice Live Play." Both have nice sounds and features. The guitar input for the Play Acoustic is less than desirable. The harmony of the unit interferes with the sound of the guitar and creates a "harmony" effect on the guitar that is horrible. Ironically, the unit tracks with the guitar to adjust harmony parts, which isn't always accurate, depending on the key you're playing in and chordal pattern. Songs in the key of D are especially problematic with me. The unit always creates harmonies in Dm, when I'm playing in D. Best to use a dynamic mic as it isn't as sensitive to interference as a condenser. Forget about using a studio mic. The guitar will bleed into the vocal mic and totally mess up the harmony parts.

BUY IT !!!!

By DOC P. from Texarkana, AR
Music Background: Singer Songwriter See my music on nearly download site.

Buy it..... I was reserved when I bought this voice processor. But when I got it and tried it out on my Mesa Boogie Rosette Amplifier and my Fishman Loudbox performer amplifier, it worked fantastic on both. I am very pleased with the vocals and the bodyrez on the guitar. And most of all it appears the play acoustic recognizes semitones. Because I tune all my strings on my guitar a half a step down and it still harmonizes my voice. Hurrah.
In the past I swore by the TC-Helicon Harmony G-XT Voice Tone. That was a wonderful voice harmony processor but they quit making it. So here it is boys and girls. If you want that replacement then get this TC-Helicon voice play acoustic. I don't think you will be disappointed and believe (once you read the full manual RTFM) you will be thoroughly impressed and happy with your purchase. Give it a try I really is good. PS The manual did not come in the box so I had to download it off TC-Helicon web site. But Trust me. You need to download it and read it.

Play Acoustic

By John R. from Bend, Oregon
Music Background: Singer song writer guitarist who plays occasionally professionally

Second one I have owned. The best in its class. The only negative is the vulnerable encoder knob in the center of the board.
The knob should be recessed or made of metal to protect it from misplaced feet. Recessed would probably be best. Otherwise it is a great product that takes awhile to learn.

A Key Part of My Sound

By Melvin S. from Bloomsburg, PA
Music Background: Gigging Musician

I'm a solo singer / guitarist and I love this pedal. Admittedly, I don't use the pedal to it's fullest potential, but it has become an integral part of my performances with all the various vocal settings. I really like the fact that my guitar signal is used to ensure that my vocals are on pitch and the harmony settings give me a larger sound.

This will be my second purchase of the pedal after wearing my 1st out after 5 years of continuous use.

Lastly, a big shout out to my Sales Engineer Will who has always provided great support and who made sure that the pedal would be promptly shipped so that I would have it in time for my weekend shows.

Great piece of gear

By Steve from Utah
Music Background: Former semi-pro - now busker wannabe

Purchased pedal for solo acoustic/electric guitar performances.
Primary need was good VOX effects, Harmonies, and a little pitch correction. Which this product does well. Perfect? No...but very good with so many features, settings, and various configuration options it will take you some time to find what's best for you. I have owned this for a couple weeks. Stock presets are good out of the box - with many options to tweak as desired.
Stock Harmony settings sound great, VOX/GTR effects are more than adequate. (For my needs) Pitch correction does a fair job - recorded into my DAW and used Melodyne to compare. It does track the song key fairly well. That being said, if you set the correction to a value above 60%, you can hear the software slewing the notes. (recorded test) I have been testing the portamento and humanize settings but have not come to a conclusion as to the effectiveness. Setting the correction to 35% (for me) seems to work quite well. I have tested the Hard tune feature some - need more experimentation tho. Also very happy using just the VOX features direct to the PA while playing electric GTR live through my amp. Any effects or EQ at the PA will affect your backing track tone if feeding through the AUX input. My Mike/PA needs to be EQ'd which mucks up the backing track sound - So I run my tracks direct to the PA.
Computer software download from TC is very useful - USB from the pedal to computer and save your settings...or upload new presets or restore your's should that be required.

Sweet(water) Harmony

By RJ from Beachside
Music Background: Worship

I purchased one of these years ago, sold it and moved up to the Voice Live 3, thinking I would use the guitar and the vocals with one pedalboard. The great sounding multi effects boards like the HeadRush and the Line 6 Helix, convinced me otherwise. I missed the Corona Chorus,Body Rez and Harmony, so back to two pedals. One for the Mag, the Voice live acoustic for the piezo. Panning them on the PA creates a full sound for Worshiping the Maker of music.

Awesome machine that works exactly as it was designed...... and you will instantly sound professional.

By Jimmy from Dallas, TX
Music Background: More electric that acoustic

What a lot of people seem concerned about is that once you set your guitar sound, that's all you get. When you change channels, you are only changing vocal parameters.... true. Your guitar stays the same..... but what they are missing, is that acoustic guitar sound is AWESOME! Remember, it's an acoustic guitar that's suppose to sound like one.... not an electric where you might want 100 different sounds. The guitar sound is just incredible and as I gig 3 times a week, most of my compliments are about the sound of my guitar. Then, the vocal features just absolutely take my average singing and make me sound like a big time pro! I am subtle with the effects... don't go overboard. People just hear a quality show, not thinking about effects. That is what you want. I could not be happier with unit. Even the tuner is immediate and accurate... dead on and quick. BOOM, you're ready to go. The bottom is it is easy to use, sounds so professional, tuner is spot on, and you deliver a professional show with confidence. BUY IT NOW!

This is the COOLEST!!!

By Brian H. from Cullman Alabama

If you are a solo artist and you need that little extra to fill up your sound. This is the perfect product.
Right out of the box I plugged in and started using it. Just the first 2 or 3 presets were amazing.
I scrolled through the others and sampled them but the first ones blew me away. I strummed a chord and held a vocal note and this unit suspended and then resolved the chord at the end. I was like "how did this know to do this". That is the vocal processor ( Which I haven't even scratched the surface of that) The guitar processor and all the things it has it.
Body Rez, Hall of fame chorus, Compression, Built in tuner and that's all I've discovered and the list goes on.
If you were to buy all those thing individually it would cost you twice the amount that this unit costs and its all in one pedal.
I was not sure about this and I thought it would sound artificial the harmonies sounded very natural and I'm glad I went ahead and got this thing, so if you're thinking about it Go for it you wont be disappointed.
Thanks to Franko Torres as well.

Just started playing with it but…

By Eric R. from New Mexico
Music Background: Guitar and piano. Many years of both

I already love it! I scored a demo model of this along with the switch 6, saving a decent amount off the normal retail price and together this makes an insanely powerful processor. I'm still trying to dial in the right tone for my guitar ('05 Martin custom shop OM18) which only has a passive piezo under the saddle. That will take more work but in the meantime I got it set up for my play style, which basically means setting up the switch 6 as the dedicated looping and delay controls. Each button is individually programmable with the play acoustic so I set them up left to right as rec/play, stop/erase, undo, lead boost, delay, and tap tempo. This configuration may change in the future but for now this feels perfect. This also leaves the buttons on the box free at all times for switching between presets and using the hit feature, which is a cool feature that will turn on a whole selection of effects on and off, which is done through the preset menu.

On to the vocals. I messed around with the always on settings and was pretty amazed by how much better my voice sounds. I've always had good pitch control but not the best tone, and this thing really does a great job with smoothing out my voice. The effects are really cool. I played around with all of them and still feel like I barely scratched the surface. Suffice it to say they all sound really good. I'll mostly be using this for Grateful Dead covers and similar music, but I had some fun with the harmonizer and hardtune.

I still need to get a couple more cables before I can play this through my PA. Tonight I just used it with IEMs, which sounded fine, but I really want to hear it through my PA. Part of the reason I got a deal on the unit was that it was missing the USB cable. It uses an obsolete connection (5 pin mini USB) and these days that one isn't so common. It would be nice if this pedal used a type B connection like most music gear does, or even type C, but that's a very small complaint (mainly because I didn't have a spare at the house). I already ordered a cable.

After a few hours with this setup, I've concluded that it's extremely powerful and versatile. The controls and settings are extremely user friendly and intuitive I'm so excited to familiarize myself with it more and put a live set together with it. Seriously can't wait.

Awesome Unit

By Frank S. from Lodi, NJ
Music Background: Intermediate Guitarist

I did a comparison to the TC Helicon Play and Play Acoustic. Since I do play guitar and did not want to plunk down Hundreds of dollars for another guitar effects unit which I already have, but found that I would like to do acoustic set at one point in time. I saw the only difference was that you get some simple effects for the Acoustic vs the regular play. They were both the same price so it was a no brainer to get the Play Acoustic. It has all the same effects that the regular play has. My Rep Spencer Kennedy was extremely patient with me and I called him several times to decide which would be best for me. This is the sole reason I keep coming to Sweetwater for my purchases. Yeah you may find it cheaper at times on other sites but a lot of folks don't consider the ease of returning items as well as the warranty which would be an additional out of pocket cost. Thank you Spencer for spending the time and patience to get the right unit I needed.
Side note: This unit can be cumbersome for those who just sing and do not have any experience with effect units. It came easy for me as I have a guitar unit with a million parameters that I learned on my own. So study the manual and play with parameters. If you don't have the patience for this then I would suggest to get the straightforward TC Helicon D1 or C1 pedals or which ever one you need for your vocals.

Thanks again Spencer for your time and patience!

Tc helicon play acoustic

By Charlie B. from Richmond, texas
Music Background: 15 years classic country music singer/ recording artist

The many years I have been singing professionally, I never knew these effects pedals ever existed... it is fabulous!!! We had a church party last week at a large restaurant, with several other musicians were present and comments received from these other professionals about my helicon was nothing less than amazement. The guys at sweetwater are always helpful, knowledgeable, and very professional... the only thing I didn't care for, was the fact it doesn't have a on/off switch....lol... but I had a plug that is remote controlled, so problem solved. Great job tc helicon... great job sweetwater... this purchase was a win,win,win,win... sweetwater wins,tc helicon wins, I win, and my fans win

Cool, but...

By John from Brooklyn
Music Background: Singer/songwriter

I recently bought the Play Acoustic. It feels as complex as you want it to be. I'm hoping to keep things simple and figure out how to best use it. Seems very cool so far. However, I must point out one thing that is definitely a huge flaw in my view. This unit only runs on electricity and cannot accommodate batteries. The connecting port for plugging in the unit is tiny and there is no locking mechanism to keep it in place. Because your guitar and vocals run 100% through this unit, and you're constantly tapping the pedal to engage various effects, if the plug ever gets disconnected from the unit, you will lose ALL sound instantly. I haven't tested this in a live setting yet, but it does concern me. They should definitely design a more robust and jostle proof way to connect the power cord to the unit.

Defective unit/no real support from Manfacturer

Used the NEW Play Acoustic unit one time, worked fine. Second time, vocal/mic worked fine, guitar input tested ok, output stopped working. Spent unknown days and hours researching manufacturer site to no avail. Unfortunately I had the unit TOO LONG for the corporate gorilla to accept a return and refund my money for this inferior product/company.

Great Vocal Pedal

By Chrisco from Wisco
Music Background: Gigging Musician

I have had a TC Helicon Voice Live 2 for years and love it. However, it took up a LOT of real estate on my pedal boards. I also really never used any more than one preset, and very seldom used the effect associated with it; so I was basically using it for the tone, and doubling. So I got the Voiceplay Acoustic. Great pedal! It is very customizable for delay, doubling, and reverb, I would have liked to have a level adjustment for the detune. It takes up MUCH less space on my board, and does pretty much the same job with harmonies.

Great tool for one-man-band!

By Scott from Tulsa, Oklahoma
Music Background: Semi-professional (Weekend Warrior) for 40yrs

This thing is pretty cool! I'm trying the one-man-band thing, now that I'm an older man. Been through playing in bands since the 80s up until a couple of years ago. I have to admit for the price I figured this thing was gonna be kinda cheesy sounding. I'm really a guitar player but somewhat of a "closet" vocalist coming out of his shell! Lol. Soooooo....I need all the help and confidence boost I can get. This Voicelive Play is just the thing to inspire me. Basically there is like a hundred presets you can use or write over. The presets are numbered and they all have the same effects available for each preset. Each preset has basically 2 channels. "On" is how you set each effect for that particular preset to be active right when you select that preset. And "Hit" is like your 2nd channel (if you will) for that same preset, and that is activated by the "Hit" foot button on the device. The same 7 effects are also available on that 2nd channel by setting the ones you want active by setting them to "Hit" in "Vocal Effects". I know this may sound confusing but once you get used to it it's really simple. You just need to take your time and get your sounds dialed in. I like to go in and look at some of the popular song presets and see how the effects are set, then start at number one preset and "overwrite" it and name it to the song I'm doing in my set list. It's actually pretty fun! And I'm not usually a guy who likes messing with a lot of dials and sub-menus. Oh, also, you need to experiment with the different harmonies for the particular song you're doing, but once you get it dialed it sounds pretty good. The harmonies are best used sparingly and not constantly "On".

It's OK but not great

By Steven P. from St Peters, MO

I really wanted to love this pedal. However, I believe it is a bit too complicated. TC should have made it more user friendly. The user manual is 70+ pages long. Some might say complexity goes hand-in-hand with versatility but not in this case. Also the ergonomics are very poor. Nearly every guitar effects pedal ever made has the chain from right to left (i.e. instrument plugs in on right and goes out to amp on left). This pedal is @$$ backwards. With all the inputs/outputs on top edge, one cannot put anything above it on a pedal board. With the buttons on the slope bottom edge one cannot put anything below it. TC had a great idea but fell short with the engineering and design.

Powerful vocal processor with a bit of learning curve.

By Doobie '. from Tuscaloosa, AL
Music Background: Blues, singer-songwriter, classic rock

I am comparing this to my Vocalist Live 3 that recently died on me. I liked it but it seems to not be available anymore. This pedal is specifically designed for the acoustic guitar and vocals. As a coffee house type of singer songwriter, that is perfect for me. It has limited guitar effects but they do make my guitar sound amazing. It is very flexible with lots of options (and presets) for the vocals. The cool thing about the presets is that I can try them and then look at active effects (like reverb, delay, harmony, doubling) to see how they get that sound. But surprising to me, there is no control over EQ. There is a real nice effect called bodyres for the guitar that does have built-in EQ, gate, compression, etc. and it can be tweeked, but most of the time they expect you to dial in your preference and then keep it there. The learning curve is long compared to my Vocalist Live but so far I like it.

Overall good investment for Solo or small bands

By Sweetwater Customer from SC

I had the White, electric version. It seemed to track the harmonies a bit better, but it may be the connections.
With a little tweaking and practice you can make this sound really authentic.
If you need harmony (don't we all?) this will serve you well. I have gotten quite addicted to it.
Less is more when tuning it in, don't overdo the harmony volume and just pop in and out of harmonies when needed.
If you use it too often it takes away from the effectiveness.
The reason I got this one is the HIT switch died after a while on my other unit.
Well worth the investment though.

I have only used a few times since delivery of my TC Helicon play acoustic. But it's fun works very well. I am still unlocking some of the treasures that this jewel has to offer. The vocal part is simply amazing! If that's all it done it would be worth having. But that's not all it does. There are adjustments and presets for acoustic guitar as well. Lastly Sweetwater customer service is amazing! They called, e-mailed and texted throughout the process of buying through delivery. A follow up call was made to assure me that they were here to help me with any questions I may have on my new gear. You know what we used to get, good old fashioned customer service. TC-Helicon VoiceLive Play Acoustic

By kit j. from Florida
Music Background: professional full time solo dude

Great pedal platform, but.......the buttons go bad. they also let particles get into the micro switches like fine sand etc. The buttons are impossible to change. Once something gets down in there it's toast, done, shot. Also, there are no barefoot buttons that fit this without being too thick, which causes the switch to not engage.

That's the only complaints.

Best vocal/harmonizer/guitar processor I have played.

By Jimmy D. from Edgerton, KS
Music Background: Artist, Singer/Songwriter, Outlaw Country Rock

Best vocal/guitar processor/harmonizer I've played. My first such unit was a Digitech vocalist live 4. Works well and sounds great, but I replaced it with Boss VE-8 when I had some issues with the power supply. The Boss also did a great job for me. However, my Sweetwater rep Ben Nielson recommended the TC Helicon when I asked him about something with more guitar effects. Well, this guitar processor is amazing. BodyRez is the real deal. But, even better is what this little box does for my voice and harmonies. Try it. You won't send it back. -- Jimmy D Rocks

Good Product- need to do lots of experimentation

By Martin M. from Manassas, VA

This product has good features and can be very useful, but I find the learning curve to learn about all the settings to be complicated. Yes, lots of ytube videos to watch, but still takes to time to get used to how to set it up optimally.

Needs more presets and simpler adjustments. Randy

Great Acoustic Guitar / Vocal Processor!

By Jon A. from Star, ID

This thing has single handedly replaced a full pedalboard of effects in my acoustic rig. No more lugging around a clunky and ostentatious board full of effects as I can now just throw this unit in my backpack and am ready for all the acoustic sets that I play. In addition to all the effects you would ever need for an acoustic guitar (reverb, delay, chorus, tuner and looper), you've got a great preamp on board in the BodyRez circuit, which can be used through its default presets (these sound great btw) or can be tweaked with its deeper editing feature set. That said, where this pedal really shines is in the vocal processing. Whether you need harmonies, doubling, pitch correction, reverb, or delay this has it all and any of which can be configured and combined into your favorite presets. The harmonies track great and sound fantastic, even when it is sensing the song key from the guitar signal. While it is incredibly difficult to be critical of an effects unit that takes care of 98% of my guitar and vocal needs, the onboard tuner is not that great (as compared to the TC Electronic PolyTune) and this thing would be over the top if it had an effects loop on the guitar side. Again, that is being really picky and I cannot recommend this unit enough!

Works for my guitar

By Shall (. from Springdale, Washington
Music Background: Singer-songwriter since 1976, open mic stage 'guy', karaoke MC sub

Like the Voice Live Play, this box can run a guitar and a microphone (mono) or a guitar or vocal in stereo. What the documentation misleads to is that the guitar settings are global and thus don't allow for selectable presets. This is not so. You can turn off the global guitar setting and dial in as many guitar customizations as you like. Then on either box, you can set your favorites and eliminate the clutter of all the factory offerings. I like to focus on no more than six settings, opting to vary guitar body resonance/tone and reverb/delay depth. There's also detune/distortion available. I will no doubt dial in the settings with reference headphones and lighten the effects adding clarity. There are so many better options for studio sound, but these are nice for live play in the park.

Am I Doing Something Wrong? Extremely Processed Vocals

By Goliath F. from Jacksonville FL

Hi, even when I have the vocal effects turned off. I can perceive a tiny delay in my voice coming out of the amp, AND there's this weird chorus sound in my vocal that I can't get rid of no matter what I turn off. If anyone reading this has knows what I'm talking about, please advise. This is a huge problem for me. - Other than that, the features are interesting. The classical guitar doesn't sound terrible through it, but it takes substantial tweaking, I've almost got it. - Also, I'm coming from a Jam Man Stereo loop pedal, I'm proficient with these things, and I'm playing through a Bose L1.

Acoustic Player's Dream!

By Jason G. from MANASSAS, VA
Music Background: Playing electric since 1979, acoustic since 1990.

I originally bought a TC Helicon Play Acoustic a number of years back, played with it for awhile (and LIKED it), then sold it as I was on a search for the best sound I could get in a one-pedal solution. After trying several other units and finding many of them too difficult to use in a live setting, I bought another Play Acoustic. Man, am I HAPPY I did that! I have 4 Emerald carbon fiber guitars (all setup with different pickups), a Carvin C750 with LR Baggs Anthem, and an old Charvel 625C (with original Charvel electronics intact) that I bought brand new in 1993. The BodyRez function in the TCHPA is fantastic! You can tone-shape virtually any guitar to your liking. I suspect that I was impatient with my first one, and wanted to get tones built quickly. Lesson learned... taking the TIME to work with this box will yield awesome results. I have a setting for each guitar that I can recall with a button tap. I lead worship at my church, and I don't use vocal harmonies since I have multiple backing singers. Although when I lead at other churches by myself, I DO use the harmonies, and they work and sound great - again... taking the TIME to set them up right. Spend some time in the manual learning what each function does, and you will find yourself becoming an expert with this unit. At this price point, what you get for the money is a GREAT DEAL!

I have included a pic of my acoustic pedal board. I run out of the TCHPA into the Boss RV-6 reverb. I use a little bit of reverb from the TCHPA, but really like the stacked sound of the added RV-6 (on the "dynamic" setting.) From there the signal hits the passive DI out to the sound system.

I've played or listened to many pedals that loop, harmonize, and provide a great tone to an acoustic guitar and vocals. The TC-Helion is by far the most advanced in its category. To achieve all that this pedal encompasses, you'd have to purchase several pedals at a much higher price tag. The TC-Helion is a joy to play through and as user-friendly as they come.

Tc-Helicon Play Acoustic Review with limitations

By steven n. from Woodmere, NY
Music Background: Musician, studio technician, former national service manager Sennheiser

I have Play Acoustic 5 or 6 months now. It's an older unit and support is hard to access. Some of the download links for firmware and videos don't work. The lag time of the MusicTribe community web site is long, it often seems to have crashed. For looking up one or two things it's tolerable, but to read articles, reach staff, or research a problem, it's slow, disorganized and frustrating.

That said, i like the Play Acoustic a lot for live. But otherwise it's limited. If you use the pitch correction or harmony effects you must not use a condenser mic - only a dynamic mic and a guitar hole cover. Otherwise the guitar gets into your vocal mic and causes phase distortions. I don't know if this applies to the more expensive TC voice models.

Play Acoustic's USB out won't let you send a separate vocal, or a separate guitar track to your DAW inputs - only stereo that you can't fully mix or balance. Panning L&R doesn't help. Instead i run the two XLR outputs, in dual mono, to separate mic inputs on my interface. But that means another AD/DA conversion cycle that degrades audio and adds latency. It's good enough for rough demos but not for real recording and mixing.

I'd like to know if any of these issues have been addressed in the Play Acoustic, or in newer models that i can upgrade to.

Wonderful Vocal Tool

By Jayce S. from NYC
Music Background: Singer/Songwriter

This pedal is so awesome. At first, I was taken back and didnt know what I thought about it but there is something so special it does to the vocals with the compression settings on the Tone control. I generally leave mine set to "Less Bright" as the pedal can be a little bright. The other band members notice the vocals "popping" out the live mix as well. It helps me set vocal effects so that the songs sound more authentic when performing live. Im super happy and glad I gave it a chance. You should too.

Not for serious musicians

By Will from Maryland
Music Background: Professional vocalist/ acoustic guitarist

There is no way, unless I'm missing something, to send your guitar feed through the unit and into any pedals. I've invested a lot of money in my acoustic pedals and effects. I can't use them with this unit directly, and that is a very annoying flaw. Older TC helicon units had a "through" feature where the guitar signal would bypass the unit and go into an external feed. They took it away for some reason. Now, with the XLR output, if I set the output to mono it doesn't work with my pedals, and if I set it to stereo it blends my vocal feed with all my effects, which of course I don't want. And yes, you can manually set the key, but a) if I'm playing a hundred songs in a night and they're in 7 or 8 different keys, so I have to just keep changing the key? Should I just set up customs settings for every single key? Also, again, unless I'm missing something, you cannot preset to a minor key. I tinkered and messed around for over an hour trying to figure out how to do it, and it's just not possible. For something like this, what is the point of being able to manually set the key if you can't set it to a minor key? It kind of defeats the purpose. This is a fun sort of toy I guess, but if your serious about having quality sound in the way of effects (yes, some of us acoustic players use effects!) this unit is not for you. Personally I won't be buying any more TC Helicon veps because of it.

Surprisingly primative software

By Thomas D. from Red Wing, MN

I have a TC Helicon Perform VG and thought I might upgrade that device to the more-featured and flexible Play Acoustic. The mechanics of the device are pretty well thought out, except that fragile scroll wheel just above the center footswitch. The case is heavy-duty, the push button switches are pretty durable looking (at least from the outside), and the screens are fairly easy to read. The device has a LOT of power, with harmonies, pitch correction, guitar effects, TC Electronic's famous reverbs and compressors, and a looper. If you are willing to slog your way through layers of screens using the 8 front panel buttons and that infamously delicate scroll wheel, you'll probably love this device.

For some reason, I had the wild hope that the crappy non-functional TC Helicon software (VoiceSupport 2, a misnamed product if there ever was one) for the PerformVG might be remedied for the Play Acoustic. It is only an improvement in that it at least addresses the Play Acoustic. VoiceSupport 2 is about as primitive a piece of software as exists in 2021. To say the least, it is worthless for anything beyond moving your cobbled-together patches from one location to another in the device's sequence of patches. TC Electronic makes state-of-the-art plugin software for DAWs that I've used for a couple of decades, but TC Helicon is apparently unfamiliar with their parent company's hard work.

Personally, I'm just not interested in going back to the 1990s with hardware that was designed by lazy programmers and an out-of-touch marketing department. I returned the Play Acoustic after a few days of futzing with the awful software and those miserable buttons.

Nice

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Professional singer songwriter.

I used a Digitech Live vocalist 4 for years and switched to this recently. The harmonies seem more transparent and the algorithm is better and I like that it is compact. The only complaint I have is the hold to talk function on the harmony button kicks in in less than a second. If you are not careful and you hover your foot over the harmony button like I do you will find yourself accidentally muting the guitar in mid song. I wish there was a way to disable that feature.

3 in 1 Footswitch SUCKS!

By Robb from Michigan
Music Background: Professional

My previous Digitech vocal/guitar effects pedal worked great for several years. I then purchased the TC Helicon Play Acoustic system.

I play live gigs in bars-- Invariably, when I am singing/playing, I stomp on the HIT pedal switch with my right foot while still looking at my music and it will click into the TUNING selection when I hit the switch and instead of getting a nice harmony on the Chorus-- my guitar is SILENCED because it is in TUNING mode!

Why did the design engineers at TC Helicon make this critical switch with 3 functions!

If it was just a two-way like my Digitech, it would be either Chorus or No Chorus--- simple and reliable.

Instead Helicon chose this key footswitch to provide tuning in the middle position!

So, stupid and embarrassing when it happens in the middle of your performance!

I’ve never sounded better!

By Jeremy A. from Oregon
Music Background: Professional

This pedal definitely takes some tweaking to get really good. I find that each guitar needs a little different eq to sound fantastic. Also all of the presets need a little adjusting. Once they are saved in Favorites, it is all good from there. It takes 3 mic cables, and a guitar cable to use it in live situations, but it is well worth the extra setup. The vocals sound great, And the guitar sounds great, then you kick in the harmonies! All of the sudden you sound like a trio instead of a solo performer!

Pretty Great

By scott j. from Murphy NC
Music Background: Gigging solo performer

I've read some of the criticisms of this unit, and what they seem to boil down to is this: This is a great harmony unit, but if you're thinking of it as both a vocal and guitar processor you're going to be disappointed on the guitar end of it. I have a Zoom AC3 that handles my guitar processing, so I only use it as a vocal processor/harmonizer, and for that it works fantastically. Love it, with only one quibble: holding the harmony button turns on the guitar tuner, which is fine, but the time necessary to engage the tuner is so brief that I often turn it on by accident. That's not good. If the button needed to be held down for a full second or two before engaging the tuner, that would be much better. Other than that, I live the unit. Great harmonies, and endless flexibility. Just know that as a guitar processor it's very limited.

The Voicelive Play Acoustic is awesome. I have so much fun with this thing. I have it connected directly to my powered speakers and I could not be more happy. Thank you TC -Helicon. Could not be more happy I highly recommended this product.

What a treat....

By Rob S. from Friday Harbor, WA
Music Background: Songwriter, producer, engineer

What a treat it is to perform with the VoiceLive Play Acoustic. The effects are rich and warm sounding.

As a mixing engineer I'd say most of the presets are set to dazzle you as you test it out on your own voice. Or, in other words, most of the effects are mixed a little too hot for my taste. But, after you're done entertaining your own ego with how great you sound, there is a master effects control where you can back down the reverbs and delays globally. (Very clever feature....as one always needs to make this kind of global adjustment to allow for a gig in an echo-drenched hall, or when playing outside.)

Making balance decisions is always hard for a singer to do while singing. I suggest doing some recordings of you and your guitar with different settings while you sort out the balances.

So, if you don't like tweaking things, the presets will do you fine just by making a single adjustment to the global mix controls.

Being an audio engineer, I just had to dig in and learn all the possibilities. It took a couple days, but this box is really nicely thought out. The menus quickly make sense AND the audio processing is rich and smooth.

You'll have a great time exploring the ways the Play Acoustic makes you sound good.

Amazing pedal

By Scott

This is my first review on any product...this pedal is so good I have calluses on my fingers. It is a really fun, interesting pedal. My voice is just o.k. nothing great and this makes you sound amazing. Not sure how well it works in a stage setting i.e. too overdone or may feedback easily etc...

With that said my hope is that the manufacturer reads comments from people to help improve on an already great product. Sooo here are a few issues I hope they change
1. The presets are fun and I am thankful that there are some very cool ones like the "take it easy" setting but someone likes reverb way too much. The up side you can make your own settings and dial down or up things you like or do not like and I believe you can modify presets too 2. Please please please put an on off switch on the thing. You would not build an awesome car and then make someone get out to push it to jump start it. 3. I am not technical so forgive the explanation here but use a plug thingy on the back that for the guitar out can either take a mic plug and a instrument jack all in one or seperate. I think focus rite equipment for example uses that... Hopefully that was not to negative because this really is the best most fun effect I have bought ever.... thanks all keep on strummin and singing... p.s.... sweetwater is an awesome company...

Awesome Unit

I hooked this device up through a small PA and could not stop testing it out, great enhanced vocal and guitar effects in one small box. Very easy to use, accurate, responsive and sturdy. If you are an acoustic act this is worth every cent and definitely brings the act to life.

Natural sounds (Voice and Strings!)

By Lyle P. from El Reno, OK

First off a thank you to Sean G from Sweetwater for always taking care of my gear needs. I just received my Taylor 114ce from Sweetwater so now I'm able to do the review on this pedal at its full potential. Has the most natural sounding harmonies I've ever heard and the guitar sounds great at all settings, I highly recommend the TC Helicon Play Acoustic pedal, especially from Sweetwater because the package was fully padded with no chances of bump damage when it arrived.

VL Play Acoustic Phenom

This piece of gear even makes me sound good vocally and that"s miraculous. I"ve been looking for a singer of this magnitude, and here I am! Who"d a thunk it. The effects are amazing. The presets will blow you away. This is my first experience with TC-Helicon, though I"ve heard about their truly professional quality. I am beyond pleased. Definately a ten thumbs up!!!

Insane value

By Stephen from MI
Music Background: Acoustic pop, alt rock, 12+ bands, 6 years as a professional musician

This is the single most valuable purchase I have made as a solo acoustic performer. I took several hours to really dig deep into the units functionality and create a specifically tailored setting for my standard show. The compression is great for my vocals and guitar, the BodyRez is great for my guitar, the harmonies are pretty darn good, not amazing, but for sure high quality and adjustable. Two things however, the eq on my mic is too warm on the Normal setting, probably because I use a telefunken m81, but I don"t understand how they didn"t add in an eq for your mic, or maybe I just am a dummy and can"t find it, so I still need to use my mixer to cut sub out of my mic. The second thing is my confusion with the harmonies. Why wouldn"t they just have it as a menu to select which intervals you want instead of the ridiculous Higher, Highest, Lower, Lowest and all as individual presets??? That is silly, a beginner is not buying this pedal, so please make it more professional. I"d love to just select a 3rd above, 5th above, 4th below, etc. so I can quickly "check off" the harmonies i want, not shuffle through 30 ambiguous presets. Yes, if you read the manual it clarifies what they mean by Higher, Highest, Lower, Lowest, but the customer shouldn"t Haaaave to read a manual when it comes to something like this.
This last thing doesn"t matter, but i"ll Toss it in anyway, Why can"t we select any harmony we want? 2nds, 6ths, 4ths. Doesn"t matter to me really, but it seems like an easy addition in the software.

Thank you TC-Helicon, I love the product!

This piece of gear is great! Got rid of my Digitech Vocalist Live Harmony for this and there is no comparison. Body Rez really makes the guitar sound real. So cool how good this sounds, but a learning curve on editing and setting presets, It'll just take some time and the videos that are out there aren't very Informative on this topic, just very general and only show the basics and or how to switch through presets, but I will say (Im gonna dig this thing for live and studio)

Amazing

By Gary S. from So Cal
Music Background: Band Leader and Entertainer

I"ve been using lots of toys in my solo, duo and trio shows over the last twenty four years and nothing has impressed me more than the TC Helicon Voice Live Play Acoustic. The guitar effects alone are worth the price of this device. I"ve paid $399.00 for a major brand name pre amp that doesn"t sound as good as what the BodyRes settings of this device can do. The warmth of my Martin and my Taylor"s just blow me away. That alone is worth the price of this unit.
But that"s not even half of what this does. The multiple harmony options and vocal effects are the best sounding I have heard yet. You"ll feel like you have one or two real voices right on the stage with you. It"s the most accurate voice duplication I"ve heard yet and the vocal effects are superb. I spent $300.00 in the past (a few times) for harmony devices that don"t sound as real voice and as good.
This is a fun addition to my shows, easy to use, a great sounding device, and so affordable. Oh wait. That"s not all...
The looper is the easiest looper I"ve used. I own and have used a few other loopers, all more expensive than what this does and not nearly as on-stage user friendly as the Voice Live Play Acoustic.
TC Helicon has done an amazing job for anyone who is doing a solo, duo or trio act on a limited budget.
Sweetwater also has several tutorials available on line that got me all dialed in and tuned up and the total package of the Voice Live Play Acoustic and services that Sweetwater offers are first class. I say treat yourself and your fans to lot more music and fun in your shows.
The Voice Live Play Acoustic has a lot more to offer as well, tuner, talk settings, effects, and other vocal processing I haven"t even used yet. YET.
I give it 4.5 stars only because I know TC Helicon is going to come out with something else that excites me. It deserves five stars no doubt.
Have fun guys and gals.

no joke, this is the best pedal I have ever bought. I use a little body rez and reverb, and just 1 high harmony.
I use it in a subtle fashion, but it changes everything. create a whole new dynamic to any song.

The only complaint is the guitar output is not a 1/4 inch, its XLR. so make putting any other pedal after the play acoustic, more difficult. but putting my delay pedal before still sounds good.

Is It Live Or Is It TC Helicon?

By Craig W. from North Carolina
Music Background: Praise & Worship Leader/Vocalist/Guitarist/Audio Engineer

I purchased this unit at least two years ago. I don't remember if I reviewed it after my purchase. By way of information, I love this unit so much that I purchased another TC Helicon play acoustic! I did that so that I would have a backup in case something happens to my first unit. I work with the gospel ministry, JC & Company. I do an acoustic electric guitar set with background music. We are currently booked through 2018 with at least two programs weekly. This ministry provides praise and worship programs for churches, schools, rest homes, retirement homes, youth rallies, youth and children's homes, and all other types of events. The TC Helicon Play Acoustic is the most realistic vocal harmonizer on the market. It is a necessary part of every program. It accepts my acoustic guitar, my iPad, and vocal mic. The guitar and vocal effects are stellar! I never leave home without it! It will be the best purchase that you will ever make!

This is a really cool device. Easy to set up and attempt your first run. Will take longer just to go through all the options and to refine the performances. So far, having a great deal of fun with it. Also bought a Zoom H4N Plus, which I use to record takes, so I can hear back what is being created during my refinements.
I can already see it will take me to new levels, not just in performing, but in writing ... :-)

The hardest review I've ever had to give.

By G. C. from MAINE

I compare this unit to the following:

- Inventing the absolute best car on the planet... and leaving out the steering wheel.
- Developing the finest restaurant in the world... and having only one drink on the drink menu.

If you are a performing singer/songwriter looking for a "live" unit to assist you. Walk away from this unit for one reason:

You can literally develop your entire night's vocal customizations into this unit so that you could simply click to the next song for over a hundred songs for your sets. Each song having a different vocal setting.

Unfortunately, the unbelievably powerful guitar effects... once programmed for one song location... caryy over to all other songs. In other words, once you create the sound effects for song 'one" in your set... you are stuck with the same guitar effects for ALL OTHER SONGS.

I am absolutely baffled by the short-sightedness of this unit. It literally would have been the most powerful unit I have ever owned.

YOU CANNOT SAVE INDIVIDUAL GUITAR EFFECTS TO INDIVIDUAL SONGS. YOU CAN ONLY SAVE VOCAL EFFECTS TO INDIVIDUAL SONGS (LOCATIONS) ON THIS UNIT. ONCE YOU SAVE GUITAR EFFECTS TO AN INDIVIDUAL SONG (LOCATION) IT IMPACTS EVERY OTHER SONG (LOCATION) ON THE UNIT. FRANKLY, THIS IS UNFATHOMABLE.

A great addition for the acoustic guitar player. I've had this for two weeks or so and with all its features I have not tried them all yet.
I do find that using the TC during practice I have been able to detect areas I need to correct in my playing. In other words I can hear much better the errors I play and make adjustments.
This really adds that extra punch, ambiance and overall tone to your acoustic playing.
It takes you to the next level.

Yep, it's all that...

By Tony D. from Greensboro, NC
Music Background: Semi-professional musician, guitar, vocals, 40+ years

My wife and I have an acoustic duo where we both sing and play guitar. Although we sing harmony on a good number of our songs (mostly covers from the 60s/70s/80s), we were looking to expand our sound on some tunes by the Eagles, Doobies, Fleetwood Mac, etc. Our first rehearsal with this unit had both of us in disbelief - it really is an amazing unit. What is equally impressive to the harmony processing is the wonderful vocal effects like reverb and delay - they really add another dimension to the sound due to the high quality of the effects. Now you can definitely over use it, but we've had good luck with my wife using the unit to add a single voice either a third above or below her note and I'll sing typically sing the 5th - it really blends beautifully. We're looking to expand the use of the looper for percussion effects, but overall, we are thrilled.

Great Product

By Elijah from IL
Music Background: Amateur, been involved in music for 11 years.

I bought this mostly to be able to add harmonies to my vocals. It does this so well and so much more. I never realized I needed effects on my guitar until this, adding that reverb and bodyres does wonders for my sound. I was also able to use this in line for a octaver at an a Capella show. This unit is extremely versatile. I had three complaints about it when I first received it: 1) the guitar effects were global only (couldn't change per preset) 2) only the switch 3 was compatible 3) there wasn't a separate mix for the headphone out.
In the latest firmware update the first two of those problems were fixed. I'm sure the third doesn't affect many players. This is a great box and I know I don't use it even close to it's full potential. And TC-Helicon is still putting support behind it at this time.

I also recommend buying (or in my case making) a switch 3 or 6. It really makes operation of this unit open up.

Great box, but takes time to get master it.

By Ed S. from Fanwood, NJ
Music Background: Just a hack, self taught for fun

I bought this to eventually use as accompaniment playing out (single vocal, single acoustic guitar). The presets are great, the harmonies added to my voice still amaze me. Ultimately I want to use the looper as a second level of accompaniment but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to do it in real time.
I wanna start a song with a chord progression recorded into the looper. Then as the song progresses, use "HIT" to enable/disable harmonies; and then click in the pre-recorded chord progression so that I can play some lead on top of that.
I'm sure there's a way to do it, I just haven't mastered it yet; hence I can't give this gizmo a 5 cause its not quite intuitive enough IMHO. Nevertheless, I love it.

VoiceLive Play Acoustic

By Gary K. from Central Maine

I've only been using this pedal for a few weeks and I'm really impressed by what it can do. I especially like the firmware upgrade from TC-Helicon that now allows you to save different guitar settings with each preset instead of the guitar being set globally. Now you can dial in your guitar and vocal any way you want and save the settings as a new preset. Thanks TC-Helicon for listening and responding to customer feedback. The only reason I didn't give it 5-stars is because both outputs are mic level. There is no line level output for your guitar. TC-Helicon advised me to use a line matching transformer so I could plug the Play Acoustic guitar output into my looper's instrument input. It does work as long as my looper sub-outputs are plugged into the mixer. But I've run into feedback issues if I just want to use my Fender Acoustasonic amp with the line matching transformer plugged into the instrument input. I'm sure there's a fix for this but I haven't found it yet. This would be a 5-star device if it had a line level output for the guitar as it probably would eliminate the problems I've run into.

Very Happy with the Play Acoustic

By David F. from Mo
Music Background: Singer songwriter/ solo performer

I've had the pedal since January, and just did the firmware update. I understand that with this update you can tweek guitar settings to match the mood /moods of the vocals. Seems very reasonable to do, haven't tried it yet. But I did feel that was a missing feature. I have also purchased a Digitech Trio plus, and noticed immediately that it tweaks your guitar settings automatically to match the drum and bass genres. So I started to miss that feel on the PlayAcoustic.

I've done about 3 solo gigs with it, and for those I just settled in for about 6 "favorite" presets. It really brings some folks head around on a swivel the when the ghost vocalists show up.

What I'd suggest as a thought for those that wanted a "guitar boost" for some solo playing, is to use the software (computer) to set up some side by side presets, with the only difference between the two being some guitar boost and maybe some added effect for the guitar solo playing. Then just use the up and down switch to move between "normal" and "solo" of your desired preset. I use the first two vocal presets this way, adding one harmony on first chorus, more harmony on the second or bridge (high harmony 1 and high and higher 2) and there's no sound loss switching between those presets. I think this would work and there are tons of empty preset slots to set up some favorites side by side.

Anyway I love the unit, and with the added feature of fine tuning the guitar effects to match the vocal harmonies and effects in each preset... I think we have a total winner.

(I can see why TC started out global on the guitar setting) You dial one in that you like, change the vocals and might wonder... where did my nice guitar setting go? Here's my dream that TC may have already fulfilled. I'd like to set a "standard" guitar setting that would be universally applied to each preset.... then be able to tweak and save on individual presets after that. If that's already possible, consider my 1/2 star deduction as a "whole" star. :-)

Dave

GREAT PARTNER TO THE TURBOSOUND IP2000

By Craig W. from Mooresboro, NC
Music Background: Praise and Worship Leader with JC & Company/guitarist, vocalist, studio engineer

As you will notice, I have already reviewed the TC-Helicon Voice Live Play Acoustic. This unit is a vocal harmonizer. Here's an update! I just received the Turbosound ip2000. This is a self contained unit that produces 1,000 watts of exceptional audio! The TC-Helicon unit has two XLR male outputs. You can program the unit so that the vocals are routed from one output and the guitar is routed from the other output. The inputs accept quarter inch for guitar and XLR, female, for microphone. Also, you have an eighth inch input for music, etc. I love the simplicity of this setup! Just make the connections and play! Also, consider adding the PRS right angle guitar cable with a built in switch that mutes the audio signal when the guitar is unplugged. Also, it prevents "pops" when plugging the cable into your guitar. Please give this serious consideration when you are purchasing the TC-Helicon Voice Live Play Acoustic. You WILL be totally pleased with the results!

Is It Live Or Is It TC Helicon

By Craig L. from Mooresboro, NC
Music Background: Audio Engineer/Studio Musician/Gospel Singer-Songwriter/Praise & Worship Leader

I work with the ministry JC & Company as a praise and worship leader. God inspired me to add another facet to the ministry by doing live sets with acoustic guitar. I was looking on the internet for ideas regarding praise and worship music. Accidentally, I ran across a demonstration of the TC-Helicon VoiceLive Play Acoustic. I continued to research this unit on YouTube. I could not find anything negative about its performance capability. I ordered it. I love it! It is user friendly! I purchased the TC Helicon SWITCH-3 to compliment this unit. It is a match made in Heaven! I place the Play Acoustic within arm's reach and place the SWITCH-3 on the floor in front of me. I have programmed the unit so that all three switches accomplish what needs to be accomplished during an entire set or program. The background vocals are simply breathtaking. The delays and reverbs included inside this unit are studio quality. In fact, I do not use any "on-board" effects on my mixer when I use the Play Acoustic. It will take you very little time to "dial in" the background vocals that you need. Once you have the unit programmed, you can simply use the footswitches to do the rest! It will even allow you to route two XLRs from the unit to your mixing board. One can be routed for guitar and one for vocals. I have yet to find anything about this product that I do not like! Listen to the demos on YouTube. What you hear is what you will get when purchasing this unit!

Country & Southern Rock

By Cliff from Tuscaloosa, AL
Music Background: 27 Years

Our band has been together and for 15+ years doing clubs, private parties, frat house gigs, etc. We play mostly country, blues, classic & alt. rock, and "party" pop. Instrumental skills are average across the board. The one thing that made our music shine was our backup harmony singer. His role was critical in making over half the songs we do "click." He had to take an indefinite break for personal reasons. It just didn't feel right with anyone else. The chemistry and interaction after 15 years together was irreplaceable. Bought this gizmo on a whim. Jokingly introduced it to the group as our "(Insert name here-in-a-box." First run was rough. Sounded fake. Axed the vocal effects, dialed down the harmony volume a tad, and viola! The crowd, and the band, were blown away. It adds magic to your vocals without being overly noticeable (except for the audiophiles who keep looking for the other singer). Perfect for the country / rock 2 and 3 parts that make you sound tight and polished. Think of Don Rich, Vince Gill, Eagles, or Alabama. Of course, appropriate application requires a bit of tap dancing to kick in in and out and right time, but it's a small price to pay for such a big improvement to your sound. Hope this helps.

Big effect, small package. :)

By Jim C. from Ames, Iowa
Music Background: Hack, but I get paid.

Okay, some of the effects are pretty cheesy. Restraint matters. Elegance wins. But with just a few days of part-time messing around, I had dialed in the best guitar tone I've ever gotten from a digital multieffects pedal, and the vocal tone was good enough that in a live setting you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between this box and a whole rack full of high-end gear. A few days after that, playing with space, I dialed in several other great (but probably a little gimmicky) tones for specific songs that need that extra push. As an added bonus, I've started running my keys through the aux in, switching to stereo out, and going straight from this unit to my amps for small solo gigs.

Very impressed. I don't gush like this easily.

Harmonizers have come a long way. This one is a keeper. It's pretty unbelievable. My only criticism is not what the unit can do, but I wish there was a manual that assumes you know nothing. The youtube videos are a big help for the tech challenged but the manual is not for the beginner.

This thing is amazing. I was skeptical, but it really can turn a good vocal into a great vocal. The harmonies are uncanny. I played a few songs through it for some friends and we just laughed in unbelief because you can't believe that it sounds that good!

What can I say? It is affordable, easy to use and it makes you sound amazing! When you hear how good you sound, it will boost your confidence through the roof. For the Acoustic guitarist/singer, this is a no-brainer. Highly recommended.

If your an acoustic player and want to add unbelievable accents to your voice and guitar, this is the one for you!! Small and easily hooked into your PA or Amp. The value of this Processing pedal is amazing!! I was blown away with how easily it was to use and the sounds it produces. As well as a super piece of equipment the people at Sweetwater are amazing too. Very helpful and knowledgeable and always friendly. You not only get a great piece of equipment but they become your family too!! Always hesitant to buy on line, I have never dealt with a company that wants to be sure your happy and always follows up on your order and how you feel about your purchase. My hat goes off to sweetwater and will buy all my equipment from them!!

large package, small box

By Barry K. from Canton, MA.
Music Background: Been playin flat top acoustic since the 70's. Learned from friends, was only in one band but have had a guitar and played for years.

Presently playing a 2001 Taylor model D. I put in a MiniMic2 (2 small mics mounted inside the body) after hearing one in a Koa Martin. Plugged into a vintage powered mixer. Was working on newer tunes and realized I needed some Fx help. So I went to Sweetwater to see what was available that fit my needs. There was so much to choose from. Well I settled on this little baby and what a great piece of equipment it is. Not only do I get great controllable guitar Fx, I have harmony and pitch correction and about a hundred other options for about the same price I was expecting just for guitar FX. As an older fellow I appreciate the pitch correction, and I was amazed at how much it (filled in) not only my guitar but this old voice too. A word to the wise, when they say "read the manual before beginning" Do so, twice, and take notes! I have had mine awhile and I'm still fine tuning it, but I'm close. Can be challenging, hence the 41/2 rating. The one thing the V.L.A.has done for me in particular is it has made it easier for me to sound relevant in this digital age. PLUS it's a lot of just plain FUN.

VERY LIMITED

By Johnny H. from Lake Tahoe, Ca. USA
Music Background: Pro Musician

If your an acoustic solo act be wary of this. You CANNOT change your guitar effect settings with your feet. You have to manually kneel to the ground and change them. That's a little embarrassing while performing. You only can change your vocal effects with your feet as the guitar effects don't change. Now why would anyone want the same guitar effects all night. Very poorly designed

TC-Helicon Acoustic: A device you won't believe is this great

By Simply P. from Scottsdale/Tempe, AZ
Music Background: Performing musician since 1983: singer/songwriter, guitar, sax(tenor & soprano), flute, piano, & native instruments

As a currently solo singer/songwriter, I look for tools to add to my sound. The TC-Helicon Acoustic, after much deliberation and discussion with Sweetwater engineer Lindsey B (who performs, produces, and touches a lot of gear), I picked this up on Cyber Monday. It replaces my DigiTech JamMan 2 pedal looper and DigiTech Vocalist Live 2 and adds about a thousand times more clear sound, rooms, and you can tweak more than I will ever probably use. No, I didn't need to replace either of my DigiTechs, both great pedals but I blew an amp and went to the Bose L1 Model II w/B2 base and Tonematch T1. I was worried about TCHeli Acoustic's match with the Bose T1. Man, did I NOT need to be concerned. The TCHeli in 2 out mono, 1 for guitar, 1 for vocal get their own channels into the Bose T1.
It just makes the sound happen the way it should. As a mainly solo performer today, this puts vocal/guitar effect at your fingertips. I have yet to touch the 1,000 presets. TCHeli as a company, tutorials on their site and people on web, just outstanding. Sell some old gear, move up to better sound. Keep makin' music. Keep relying on Sweetwater.

Great Piece

By Luis V. from Seattle, WA USA
Music Background: Church Worship

PlayAcoustic brings a whole new tone to both your vocal and your guitar. TC Helicon has done a great job with Bodyrez. I do not own a fancy and expensive guitar, but PlayAcoustic made surely made it sound like one. The clarity that it brought to my vocals is incredible. Not to mention how the awesome and realistic the harmonies are. The only thing that I recommend when buying the PlayAcoustic is also getting the Switch-3. I gives you a lot more flexibility and helps you to get the most out of the device.
If you already are a Sweetwater client, I surely don't have to say anything about customer service experience. You know it. But if you're not, I'll tell you this, don't bother shopping somewhere else. This is the best you can get in all aspects.
Hope this can help you a little.

Best Solo Live Performance Toy Ever

By Ray J. from Pine Grove, CA USA
Music Background: Singer/Songwriter and small music studio owner/operator. I have written, recorded and produced over 350 songs.

The TC-Helicon VoiceLive Play Acoustic is the most useful tool an individual acoustic act can acquire! The body res feature really brings your acoustic/electric guitar to life. The vocal harmonies are very realistic. I went online and downloaded additional vocal/harmony choices from the TC Helicon website. There are so many to choose from and they were easy to access and download. The unit itself is easy to set up and small enough to be very portable. I did not even know how much I needed this "tool" until I plugged it in and used it. Could not recommend it more! Thanks to Alan Finkbiener, my Sweetwater rep for turning me on to this amazing device! Any and all solo acoustic acts should consider purchasing this device...from Sweetwater, of course!

Pleasantly surprised! Nice piece of gear. 5-star with firmware update.

By John R. from Savannah, GA
Music Background: Singer/Song-writter/Performer

First of all, I love what this pedal does. I actually love the compression and eq it adds to your voice, I love the luscious reverbs, I love how intuitive and easy it is to use. The looper was a great bonus, the amount of customization and ability to really dial in your sound is the most important to me and this pedal has it. It's super easy to set up when you're gigging. Not to mention the headphone out with room-sense mics, well done TC.

Now to the nitty-gritty... My only disappointment with this pedal is that (as far as I know with the current firmware) you can't change guitar presets on the fly by tapping a switch. In other words if I wanted to turn on a boost and super wet reverb by stepping on a switch it's not possible. However this problem isn't a hardware issue so it could easily be fixed with a firmware update (which will hopefully come soon with the voice live play electric).

Bottom line. Amazing pedal, needs a firmware update or two, but I totally recommend it as is, it's a great tool for those looking for control of their own sound.

Mostly Great

By Hoaloha from Makawao, HI
Music Background: Pro Musician

There are a lot of things I love about this unit and a couple I really don»t like. I love the small size and sturdiness of the unit, quality of the harmonies, the fact that the wet guitar and vocal signals are on separate outputs, the tuner display is really well done, the ability to use in-ear monitoring directly from the unit (I bought the combination guitar/headphone cable), the looper works great and is easy to use. Now for the 2 things I don»t like. The first and biggest issue i have is the lack of a basic 3 band EQ. There is this thing they call "Adaptive EQ" which simply doesn»t allow you to set the EQ of the vocals to suit your own ear but instead they have several preset EQ/compression/gate settings that you can choose from - I hate this "feature" - give me an old fashion 3 band EQ and separate compression and gate settings!!!!! The other thing I don»t like is the way the harmony switch operates - you have to stomp to turn them on and then stomp to turn them off. With my old Digitech VL you could configure the foot switch so you hold down to engage harmonies and release to turn them off which i find much easier to deal with - but I guess I»ll get used to all of the stomping. Overall this is a great little unit and has everything the singer/song writer needs and just as important not a bunch of stuff you don»t need.

Great little package

By Billy C. from Boston
Music Background: Pro musician, performer

I love this unit. It has all I need for great harmonies, looping and effects and is easy to use and manipulate. I had a VoiceLive Touch but in the end it really did more than I needed. My only complaint about this latest product is the manual. They could do a LOT better I. Instructing and illustrati g the best ways to use it.
