Great piece of gear

By Braxton S. from Oklahoma City, OK

Incredibly useful, great build quality, overall a wonderful addition to my studio. I wish they had packed as much functionality into the UF8 and UC1 as they have with this!

Confusing but love the scroll wheel and transport controls.

By Frank B. from Laguna Beach, CA

Can improve you workflow in a DAW. So many knobs you can assign. Technically a challenge. Killed my productivity through the learning curve. I think experience will help.
The does beat the crap out of the *esonus* single fader accessory in every way.

Looks like you can map almost all of the controls into almost any DAW or plugin control. This is however painful and I am still working to master this device. Falls somewhat short of my expectations so far in terms of ease of setup and programming.

iLok enabling of software and plugins is painful and annoying.

Loving it

By George S. from Coronado, CA
Music Background: Legendary Game Audio Guru

Everything works great, no surprises. What a pleasure to finally replace the good old (but big) Mackie Control after all these years with something that not only works as well (finally! I tried a lot of other options) but even better. I love all the modern features like USB and plugins, I love the solid feel of the faders, the button placement is familiar enough and smart, there's not a trace of regret in making the switch. Huge kudos to Mackie for setting the standard and lasting so long, and huge thanks to SSL for picking up from there and carrying it to the next level without breaking my workflow. I'll likely be trying out the other units in this series.

Great Work Flow. Love it!

By Eric A. from Saint Germain, WI

These units are great. It gives you some analog feel to your setup. I always start, stop, position, and record with the UF1 so I no longer accidentally effect my DAW while trying to work in a Plugin such as EZ Drummer and others that share similar controls as the DAW from my keyboard and smart keys. Now I wonder what I'm missing by not having the other two 360 control products... I may have to find out.

Great Design

By Bob M. from Atlanta
Music Background: Piano, Keyboardist and composer 50+ years in the NYCmusic circuit

Great Design and functionality my only complaint is the quality of the fader. Same faders that SSL uses on the UF8. They are not smooth and very noisy. That is really the ONLY complaint I have on this unit. The jog wheel is very smooth along with the encoders. I hope SSL finds a higher quality fader to use in both this unit and the UF8s
All in all good build solid!

Perfect Companion to UF8 and UC1

By Brian A. from Liverpool, NY
Music Background: Mixing Engineer, composer, performer

I picked this up after using the UC1 and UF8 together for a couple of years. Those two work great on tandem, but the expanded features of the UC1 alongside them makes the control surface feel complete. My favorite feature might be the added plugin control that lets you drive the channel strip preamps without having to navigate a submenu or put the UF1 in plugin mixer mode. The metering is super helpful as well, as is the jog wheel and transport keys. Love that you can customize the color scheme of your buttons as well. It's nice to have "cycle" backlit in purple just like it is on Cubase.

Nothing Better. Period.

By David from Austin area
Music Background: Professional recording engineer/producer for 28+ years

I spent 28+ years as a professional recording engineer/producer, beginning in the 1970's. Needless to say, I saw many changes in recording technology and the record industry as a whole, and I'm grateful to have worked with so many great artists, many you would probably have in your music collection. During my career I worked in numerous world class studios in Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, New York, and finally Nashville. In the later years, most consoles I worked on were either Neve or Solid State Logic (SSL).

I now have the SSL UF8, UF1, and the UC1 controllers for my DAW. Listening to shoot-outs between the actual 4K series and the SSL plugin unsurprisingly was very, very difficult to hear the difference. In the course of doing anything other than solo material (one voice or one instrument) very few would hear the difference and even if you did hear the difference, it would be so minute that it simply wouldn't matter to anyone.

If needed, I will buy another UF8, but I don't typically work with more than 48 tracks, so even one UF8 is easy to work with. The UF1 has many great features I constantly use and reference to, like transport control and metering, and the UC1 has a very accurate SSL channel strip for dynamics and EQ, plus the celebrated stereo buss compressor (also known as the mix 'glue' everyone talks about) just like their consoles, along with fabulous build quality, accurate sonics, and, functionality. The real point is, though, this eco-system is epic genius, as one would expect from SSL. I don't have to stare at DAW tracks and instead, can focus on the music with the SSL 360 software and hardware, which accommodates and integrates virtually all of the features available on their large format consoles and puts it all on your computer's monitor. It thrills me to feel like I'm working on those 4K and 9K consoles again.

If you're looking to build your studio clientele or create your own work that delivers professional results, this is the one system to aspire to owning. There is unequivocally nothing else out there that can compete with this.

Thanks to Roq Martin, my great Sweetwater Sales Engineer, for many years running!

Great purchases

By Thomas B. from Florida
Music Background: Audiobooks, some music

Bought all three of the SSL products to help with my audio production flow (UF1, UF8, UC1), and I can't believe how much easier to do most anything that I was constantly diving for the mouse and keyboard for. It took several days to learn enough about the products to begin using them effectively (loads of online videos, plus pretty good User Manuals), but once I figured it out I've gotten all three pieces to fit in nicely into my workflow - which now includes much less diving for that mouse and keyboard. Definitely worth every penny.

UF1 is Great

By William E.

UF1 is like a one of those gadgets that does 8things but intended to do one. I love the fact that I can use the soft keys to activate functions, like a mouse. Focus is the mode I go to alll the time, and The visuals on the meter Plug in helped me balance my mixes much better than I ever had.

Faderport Mkii Actually Works

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Producer, Voice Over Actor, Mixing Engineer

The build quality is great. Feels very solid. But I don't know if I had a faulty unit as the fader wanted to pull down when reaching unity gain. The fader would latch when moving at all so writing automation didn't work. This was consistent in Ableton and Reaper.

The screen looks great but I think it is useless to have all those banks of assignable keys that are bypassed when using the metering plugin. The meter's settings should be accessible in the plugin, leave the top row of buttons alone.

The part that I feel was disingenuous was their advertising that stated that this controller was one of the most customizable controllers out there. Not true. The secondary transport and top row of buttons are customizable, only via key command, not OSC or midi cc. There is a midi cc mode, but it bypasses 90% of the controller. The rest of the controller is fixed to 1 function. The Softube Console was far more flexible because all of the buttons output via midi cc, making it able to technically control any function within Reaper / Ableton because it's assigned inside the daw.

There is a massive jog wheel and other encoders that would be great if they could also be customized, but they can only be used for navigating tracks. Which I don't know who is doing that, because the mouse is so much faster for this task.

I switched to the Faderport 2 and it worked right out of the box. No customization and it just works / is smaller / costs way less. For the price, I'd recommend that or an iPad mini (Metagrid or TouchOSC).

Workflow dream

By Jim T. from Martinez, CA
Music Background: Composer. Jazz, Classical, Gospel, Afro-Caribbean

This is the perfect companion to the UF8 for complete complete, intuitive control over your mixes.

For years, I searched for the perfect replacement for the M-Audio ProjectMix, which was an incredible all-in-one motorized control surface & audio interface.

With the UF1 & UF8, SSL changed the game for modern control surface with the ability to get just what you need and/or expand as your home or professional studio grows.

What's not to love about ease to setup and ability to control multiple DAWs with the push of one button.

Hardware great. Software poor

By T M.

SSL has the most convoluted software system in the business.

Why do they install AU software if it is incompatible and does not work?

Most complicated install ever !!

Great product, but one big downside

By Paul M. from Houston, Texas
Music Background: DJ & Producer

This is a great single-fader controller; fantastic build quality, great included software that is easy to use to assign key commands, etc. It was bigger than I expected but it is solid and the included screens make it a step above the other single fader controllers out there. I use it with Ableton Live and the setup was super quick and easy (it also works great with other DAWs I've tried too). The one downside is because it uses Mackie Control (MCU), it does not automatically update to the selected channel when you click or select a track in your DAW. This is a bummer, because it means you have to use the knob on the unit to scroll to the track you want. Other single fader controllers, like the one in Cubase and the Faderport, are able to do this in their native DAW. From what I understand, SSL is looking at this and may try to provide a fix with v1.6 of the 360 software. If this gets fixed it will be a 5 star product.

Very good external controller

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Guitarist. Mixing student. Composer

The transport bar options are very convenient and there is more that this can do to help navigate through a session which can and should help with workflow. I was able to figure out how to control plug-ins and parameters but it could take getting used to which you can do with help
of instructions and it might take either1 or 2 to 3 days for me that is. It's great when you know how to use it. It also looks so very cool. Worth it.

A great complement to the UF8

By Steve W. from Shelton, CT
Music Background: Professional Amateur

I recently added the UF1 to the home recording studio along with a UF8. I am enjoying the mixing experience even more with the two units working together. The UF1 is a solidly-built kit. The display is large and bright and the flywheel, fader and knobs all well constructed. I had to plug the UF1 into the front of the Mac Studio M1 due to the power requirement. Not a big deal but just saying my powered USB hub wasn't getting the job done. I'm looking forward to using the UF1 with the UF8 for many years to come. Thanks to my longtime (going on 20 years!) sales engineer and fellow Michigander, Mike Picotte, for delivering the goods. He's simply is the best!

Solid Single Fader DAW Controller

By John R. from Chula Vista, CA

Well constructed with lots of functionality. The meter plugin with display screen kind of puts it over the top. For those that operate in HUI land this is one of, if not the best controller available. I'm using it with the UF-8 and there is some redundancy, but the pairing is very effective. If I had to choose one over the other it would definitely be the UF1. Doesn't support EUCON so the integration with Pro Tools is limited to HUI. If I were strictly a PT user I would consider a EUCON controller first. Much more capable using it with UA LUNA and Apple Logic Pro. Recommend reading the manual and watching a few tutorials as a lot of the features and capability are fairly intuitive, but there is lots more under the hood.

Excellent

By Thomas S. from Nebraska

As with all of the SSL equipment, this is excellent in terms of function, design and build quality. It works very well with my UC1, UF8, Bus+, Fusion, Big Six and SSL12. They work quite happily together - and with Reaper.
