Universal Audio Ruby '63 Top Boost Amplifier Pedal Reviews

Stereo Amplifier Simulator Pedal with 3 Modes, 3 Cabs/Speakers, Treble Boost, Vibrato, Bluetooth, Presets, and USB MIDI Control

Inspired by the legendary 2 x 12-inch combo amplifier that powered the British invasion, Universal Audio’s Ruby ’63 Top Boost amp pedal is loaded with jangle and bite. This pedal is an end-to-end emulation of one of the most iconic British amps of the ’60s, sporting Brilliant, Normal, and Vibrato channels that deliver everything from chimey cleans to all-out crunch. Guitarists at Sweetwater are amazed at how closely the Ruby ’63 re-creates the sound of a tube amp recorded in a live room, and this lifelike quality comes courtesy of UA’s incredible mic, cab, and Dynamic Room Modeling technology. What's more, each pedal in the UAFX series allows you to bypass your amplifier's preamp when the pedal is engaged via the special "4-cable" mode, supercharging your amp with two additional channels. For even greater control, the Ruby ’63 sports Bluetooth and MIDI compatibility to connect to Universal Audio’s UAFX app for enhanced editing, expanded control, access to artist presets, and more.

Nails the Vox tones and then some

By Brian from South Weber, UT
Music Background: Musician, engineer, songwriter

If you want a "Vox in a box", this thing is perfect. Nails the Vox tones and I love being able to choose from different speakers. The preset setup isn't quite as user friendly as I hoped, but I find it inspiring to play and it makes it so that I can still get a great amp tone when I playing gigs where they don't want the sound of the amp competing with the sound system and want me to go direct. Like all Universal Audio products, it seems extremely well designed and built. Highly recommend.

Ruby 63

By Sweetwater Customer

This pedal is awesome. I needed a chimey Vox sound for church and recording and this takes the crown. It sounds amazing through the front of the house.

I have a Z-Wreck and I would say it rivals it. If you're on the fence, buy it.

Sounds are authentic

By Marc

For me the most important part of a unit like this is how it sounds and feels. I'm not too fussy when it comes to features, size, apps/software (for digital amps etc). I've heard that the UA app for these pedals kinda sucks, and that there's issues with bluetooth. And I'm sure there's things with the layout and features that won't appeal to some people, to the point where the unit just isn't for them, it's all valid. But in terms of the sounds you get, it is for me 10/10, the best out there. I use it almost exclusively through solid state power amp, into a real speaker cab (with the cab sim on the pedal OFF) and it sounds completely authentic, no weird digital sounds, none of that. It's not the most flexible unit when you use it like this, but that's because its emulating an old AC30 from the early 60's. Simple as that. For recording its perfect as well. The cab/mic emulations are great and it interfaces easily with recording software. A headphone out would have been nice, but that's OK.

Overall I think the features and stuff like that can be hit or miss, and there's surely room for improvement, but in terms of sounds, there's nothing better on the market, IMO.

Vox to Fender in a Stomp

By Jeffrey A. from Altadena, CA
Music Background: Bedroom noodler. Classical, Jazz, Folk.

Fantastic. Delicious. So much to explore. Love all the flavors of gain and vibrato I've heard so far. Comes with three amps and six speaker choices, each one changes absolutely everything.

I'm using the 4 cable set up which is brilliant. When it's on, she's an all Vox rig. When it's off, she's all Fender as it defaults to my amp's preamp, keeping modulation pedals in the effects loop. Endless possibilities and loads of UA as well as artist presets yet untapped.

Great Amp Pedal

By Gregory C. from Yakima, WA
Music Background: 40 + year gigging guitarist.

I have never owned an AC30 but from my research this pedal replicates the nuisance of the original very well.
The bass and treble control work in opposite direction like the AC30.
I've found that it works well as a pedal platform or you can use it as a standalone and get really good tones either way. This is a perfect pedal for FRFR speaker users.

excellent pedal, but doesn't meet my specific needs

By Chris from St Louis
Music Background: serious hobbyist

I also have a Dream 65 and a Lion. This is my least favorite of the trio.

The normal channel supposedly takes pedals better, but in general it sounds like an amp under a thick blanket. The brilliant channel sounds trebly and harsh with pedals, but sounds nice clean. The tremolo is fine if you want that sound, but it's not my favorite tremolo. All of this lines up with my experience with a real AC-30 for the most part, though I don't remember the normal channel sounding so dull and lifeless. At least with the Ruby you can turn it up without destroying eardrums.

But here's the thing - if you want that AC-30 sound, this pedal does it. One of my favorite guitar sounds is an AC-30 breaking up, I just love that distinctive grainy sounding overdrive. Nothing else will make that sound. You can get that sound from the Ruby all day long. It'll have you working out all those tasty Brian May licks.

It's not really fair to ding this pedal for being a warts-and-all recreation of an AC-30, but the fact of the matter is I just can't enough useful useful sounds out of it to make it worth keeping on the pedalboard.

Best sounding amp I have ever owned

By Mark K. from SCOTTSDALE, AZ

I told Sean - my Sound engineer - that I need an intervention.
Bought the Dream 65 on a whim - loved it.
Took a chance on the RUBY - just as good maybe better. Makes a Strat sound like it should. The only gotchya is that the bass knob works exactly the opposite of what you think. When you turn it to 10 - the bass is set to -0-. When you set the knob to -0- the bas is set to 10. Go figure.
I know have four of these pedals. They sound so good. Get ready to srat using the volume knob on your guitar. get a good clean sound at Volume 6 and roll it on to get some crunch. I barely use the overdrive pedal.

This pedal is GOLD.

Fantaastic!

By Mark K. from SCOTTSDALE, AZ
Music Background: Have been playing for a very long time

Let me give you an idea of how good this pedal is.

I have a Strat, that I bought used in 1997. It must have been owned by someone who worked in a muffler shop because when I got it - it was filthy dirty.

I tried everything to love that guitar. New pickups - new bridge - new nut - nothing worked. It always sounded like an icepick in my ear. It has been hanging on my wall for twenty years.

This past Sunday I played a worship set at a local church and needed an alternate tuning for one of the songs. I didnt want to retune in the middle of the set so I thought - 'Let me see if I could use the old Strat'. I pulled it down, tuned it, plugged it into the Ruby and it blew my mind. Sounded fantastic!

Havent used this pedal with anything other than a Strat and a Tele - I can say that if you own a Strat and you want to get some new inspiration frrom it - plug it into this pedal.

Works great on my pedal board

By Jeff C. from Trenton, GA
Music Background: Former Touring Musician

The Ruby has been a Great Pedal Platform for me. Stick it at the end of the chain or anywhere else on your board and get really nice cleans. My favorite are the Artists Presets. This thing is perfect also into the front of an amp.
A special "Shout Out" to my sales-engineer, Zack, for assisting in all of my needs. He's the BEST!

Ruby!

By Mike

What an amazing amp sim! It is scary how identical it sounds to my AC15. Running stereo is also a game changer! UA amp sims are definitely the best in the game. Also, the App is a game changer. I love you you can download pre-made amp sounds from well-known artists. It is also a breeze to pick different amp models through the app. Thanks Sweetwater!

LIVES UP TO THE HYPE!!

By Sweetwater Customer

I have a Vox AC30 HW2 with Blue Alnicos. After two years of playing through this amp, I now use the Ruby. I'm a church player, and most weeks I forget that I'm playing through a pedal. I highly recommend this pedal to anyone that is looking for a direct option. Seriously good! (We picked up a second one.)

Sounds great, buuuut...

By Zach from OLYMPIA, WA

This pedal sounds phenomenal. The range of Vox tones is truly impressive, and whatever UA is doing to emulate speaker cabs is some kind of magic. The clean and edge of breakup tones I found were untouchable.

But I learned some important things about myself and what I need from a pedal amp setup - pristine sound isn't enough if the features and flexibility aren't there.
Here's what went wrong for me:
1.) The Android app is extremely buggy and took multiple attempts to connect every time I used it, and it locked up and froze frequently.

2.) I thought I could deal with no effects loop, but it led to far too much tap dancing for live performance.

3.) The cab select switch broke within the first hour of dialing in tones.

4.) Sweetwater made exchanging the pedal super easy, but upon receiving the new pedal, the presets I saved in the app were lost.

5.) The ability to access only one preset and what is dialed in on the pedal was too limiting for performing.

Some of the trouble I've had is a result of my own expectations and inexperience. At the end of the day, I needed something that had more preset capacity, an effects loop, and a usable software interface.

If you have a well stocked pedal board, don't need to rely on the Android app, and want phenomenal AC30 tones in a small footprint, this might be the best way to go.
But I needed the effects loop and more presets. And the little switches for cab, amp, and channel selection were frankly flimsy.
I picked up the Boss IR200 and couldn't be happier with it.

Q

By J from San Francisco
Music Background: Producer

I love AC30s. I'm currently waiting to score the right vintage JMI AC30, which meant I needed to sell off some of other AC30 and AC30ish gear. I thought I'd be happy with my HX Stomp in the interim, but I am not. The Stomp sounds good, but I'm not inspired by the interface, even though I have no problem navigating it and think it's a really nice piece of gear. And the Helix AC30 tones didn't quite feel like my amps.

Decided to grab the Ruby. The simplicity of the interface is exactly what I was hoping for. The knobs work almost exactly like on the real thing, making it easy to adjust on the fly. I have a stereo channel dedicated to the Ruby in my studio, so I leave the pedal in Preset/Live mode which allows me to have a preset with boost on/off and the live pedal with boost on/off ready to go at all times, making it almost like a four channel, foot-switchable AC30. No MIDI, but given how easy it is to adjust the pedal on the fly, that's more than enough versatility for my needs. The speaker cabinet modeling is great, too. I also have the UA Ox and I'm pretty much convinced UA does the best cabinet models, even though there are some amazing IRs out there. Being able to quickly switch between the six speaker cabs makes using this in a studio context so easy. Overdubbing or getting a different tone for the verse and chorus is as easy as flicking a switch. Personally, I like NOT having the choice paralysis of a hundred different IRs. The speaker models that UA provided are plenty diverse. Some are a bit scooped. Some are bit mid-focused. Some are vintage sounding. And some, like the Matchless cab, are more hi-fi. The options make it easy to match with pedals, too. I will die on a hill proclaiming that speakers and cabs make far more difference to sound than anyone realizes. Hate your pedals into the Ruby? Try a different cab! You'll get a totally different EQ and harmonic response.

It's not a perfect pedal, though. While I like the lack of choice paralysis, needing the iOS app to manage presets is a little annoying. I'd like to be able to store at least three on the pedal itself. That would be an easy thing to have added by allowing stomping on both foot-switches to allow the player to cycle through loaded presets. Alternatively, they could've added an additional TRS jack for use with an optional external foot-switch. It would also be cool if the four-cable method could be modified to use as an effects loop. Yes, it's easy to put effects after the pedal, but there are desirable sonic advantages to having the effects go through the "speaker" sometimes. It can make delays and reverbs feel like they're in the room with the amp rather than added in post. This is not a huge deal, but I still wish it were an option. Guess I'll have to get the Ox Stomp too. Finally, while I have rigged up some headphones with the unit, I wish they had added even an inexpensive headphone jack just to make it grab and go for practicing. My studio is downstairs, but sometimes I want to sit on the couch upstairs and play when inspiration strikes. I'd love to bring the Ruby upstairs with me in the evenings, but the lack of a headphone jack makes this awkward.

It's a great pedal. It's not perfect. But it's the best AC30 modeler I've played. The lack of other amp models might be a negative for some, but it adds to the utility for me, even though I wish it allowed a few more presets on the pedal. One day I'll have my JMI AC30 (and a tech on call to keep it running for me). But until then, the Ruby is quenching my thirst for AC30 sounds.

Ruby 63 a! pedalboard Gem

By Lawrence B. from Ridgefield, WA

Just love it! Sound, feel, and size, this pedal hits the mark. I highly recommend this pedal if you desire the VOX sound, this is the one. I've Dailey in Voxes on an Axe FX III and I've played through an Iridium and neither gets the realism of a VOX like this.

U2 sounds - highly recommend

By Kelvin M. from Indianapolis, IN

I started playing guitar because of The Edge from U2. My tone has always stunk compared to his tone. But I can now finally use the UA Starlight and this to get great U2 tones in a headphones rig into an Apollo. I've listened to U2 for so long… it is the first time my tone feels like Edge.

Yesterday, I ran an Epiphone Custom Shop Les Paul into a JHS Clover into Starlight into Ruby into Apollo and got tones which are so close to the U2 Rattle and Hum movie… the live version of Exit.

Highly recommend even if you don't care about U2 at all.

Jaw Dropping Tone

By Jim
Music Background: Almost 40 years chasing tone

I've had the Dream 65 since last Xmas and was seriously impressed. I bought this along with Woodrow about four months back. I was so pleased with the first two I hadn't pulled Ruby out of the box until now. I've never played an ac30, so didn't know it would be this good. I just assumed it would fall short. Turns out, it may actually be the best of the bunch. I've just got the settings the same as out of the box-everything at noon. I really can't imagine ever needing to use an OD pedal. It just sounds perfect.

Best One Yet

By Kevin P. from North Carolina
Music Background: Hobbyist

I ended up selling a 68 Princeton and this pedal to make room for an AC15c1. This pedal sounds really good though, much better than anything I've heard like it, it actually sounds and feels (to some extent) like a Vox. It just seems slightly off though, like an AI version or something. I really love the Vox sound so I thought this would be a smart buy because it has all the functionality of an AC. To be fair though, I'm using an Ironman 2 mini with and AC15 and Melda MCabinet to direct record so that's about $1200 of stuff compared to around $350 for this pedal. I honestly could see where a V2 or V3 could rival or surpass a current AC15. And this pedal might already arguably surpass an AC10 or AC4, it sounds pretty darn good. I really wanted a Vox though, so I ended up getting the AC15 instead and now I'm done! lol

I love this Ruby!

By Stephen from Wake Forest NC
Music Background: Retired professional musician, singer/songwriter

I did a year of research before pulling the trigger on my Ruby '63 pedal. And it paid off. This is a GREAT pedal, and probably the best single pedal I own. It delivers in features, in sound quality, in tone, and in sounding exactly like not one, but 2 different classic VOX amps. I LOVE IT!

hard to dial

By Sweetwater Customer

this thing is hard to dial! also the cut knob and volume/gain knobs do not react like any real vox ive ever used. the "normal" channel to my ear was not even useable although its my preferred channel on a real vox. also, UA customer service is awful so good luck getting anyone to talk to you on the phone lol.

Replace your amp...seriously

By Nick T. from RI

The hype is real. I've always been a tube amp purist but I took the plunge on this pedal with all the hype surrounding it. It is really amazing and feels exactly like a high-quality tube amp and I've always wanted AC30 Top Boost but don't need a house shaking amp. This gives me an AC30 at any volume. Also it is the best for recording - so easy to just run it direct in to my Apollo - no screwing with mics and set-up. Perfect for basement recordings. Now I need the Dream...

Some great sounds, yes. Good value proposition for recording only, maybe not

By Sweetwater Customer from OR

I bought this pedal to do silent recording into the DAW, with no plans to gig in the near future. As a long time tube snob, I have never used a simulation before but the reviews and online demos for this pedal were so good I went for it. There are some *great* sounds in here. I tried my best to find any kind of flaw in the tones, did a lot of side-by-side tracks with a tube amp (not an AC30 type) and was mostly just delighted by the sounds. With certain long-held chords, especially with 9ths and 2nds, I did get some weird non-musical grit happening, but that can happen with real tube amps too. In terms of dynamics, it sometimes feels like the algorithm puts things into "buckets", meaning that I can make a repeated figure sound *exactly* the same way every time. On a real tube amp my control over dynamics (right hand) is not good enough to do that. Depending on the style of music, this could be a pro or a con. Those are my subjective impressions, as a lifelong tube snob.

Is it a good value proposition as dedicated recording tool? Not too sure... At the end of the day it's a pedal-shaped computer that runs one plugin. it really feels like the USB port could do more than firmware updates. For more you can get an Apollo solo, have access to plugins like the Friedman Buxom Betty, and you've got an interface... If UA made the Ruby software available to run on an Apollo that would be a no-brainer for me.

Best Amp Modeler Around

Mind Blown

By Sweetwater Customer

Coming from Helix world I decided to go back to a traditional pedalboard only now at the church I play at everything in direct in. There's a lot of choices for direct in solutions but I settled on this for many reasons. Two of the main ones are I'm a Vox EL84 guy at heart. Needed something that could replace my Bad Cat Cub. Also, stereo in was important to me as I like my effects into the front of slightly broken up amps. What surprised me the most is the feel of this thing and how it responds to pedals. It responds much differently than what I'm used to and feels just like playing a tube amp. Doesn't sound processed and much more raw. I honestly can't hear a hint of digital in it. The cab sims are awesome also. I like that I'm not constant tweaking and switching IR's and can just focus on playing. If UA puts out a Hot Rodded Marshall it's gonna be hard not to add that to my board also.

I might have to sell my real amp amp…

By nicholas b. from Bristol, VA

This pedal sounds great. The flexibility of it is outstanding and I don't feel I am compromising tone after recording some tracks with it. I do have an AC30 and I'll be using this pedal just as much, maybe more, for recording. Now if we can get a Universal Audio bass pedal (hint hint).

Simple and Effective

By Steve

I play weekly at church in our Contemporary Worship Services. Have been looking at options to save wear and tear on my primary amp, a Dr. Z M-12. The Z is voiced more towards the Vox sound. We mic amps in a room off stage, so playing live I'm hearing my mix with in ear monitors.
I have used pedals with multiple effects, amps, and cabinet programming built in, and ended up with two or three patches that I could tweak on the fly and the rest of the processing was unused. I prefer to keep things as simple as possible. I'd rather play than deep dive into programming a pedal. When UA came out with the Ruby, Dream, and Woodrow, I was drawn to the simplicity of having one great amp voice in a pedalboard friendly enclosure to send my signal directly to front of house.
My choice was the Ruby. I am very pleased with this pedal. It truly captures the AC 30 sound. The chime, touch response, and grit is all there. The controls are very simple once you are familiar with them. The options of normal, top boost, and tremolo amp models cover any Vox vibe you could need. The ability to add a preset via Bluetooth is great, no muddling with cables. Speaker cab sims included are fantastic and cover lots of territory. No deep dive or purchasing patches necessary.
I normally have 2 voices set on the Ruby, one cleaner channel and one lead channel. So I effectively have a 2 channel Vox amp on my pedalboard.
The Ruby has allowed me to delete 2 drive pedals from my board, as the Ruby has plenty of gain built in and the inclusion of adjustable boost.
It does feel very much like I am playing thru an amp, not a pedal with an amp simulation. My practice setup is: guitar, pedalboard, 4 channel mixer with eq flat and no effects, and studio over the ear headphones.
The Ruby does everything I was hoping for and more. If you need the Vox sound in simple and effective package, you should give the Ruby a try.

Tone!

By Sweetwater Customer

I'm playing the Ruby through a PowerCab to get an amp in the room sound and sitting it directly next to an AC15 it gets pretty close! There is a ton of tone and variability with all the knobs and settings...does it sound exactly like a modified 64' blah blah blah...who knows! Does it feel like an analog tube amp being pushed...kinda of. Lots of great tones and plenty of that Vox chime. I read a bunch of reviews about using Ruby for home studio use or going straight to the front of house but nothing about replacing a practice amp in a small room or practice space. There are pros and cons. One big pro is volume. The real thing wants to be played loud. Ruby has an output knob and the Powercab has a volume knob so you can get those driven tones at decent volume. I like it...I'm waiting for the Marshall version!

Best pedal out there

By Sweetwater Customer

Just like everyone else, I never thought this could do what it does. I never thought I'd go digital. I got hooked on the 4-cable option to bypass your physical amps preamp section. Figured if anything it would be good for that, considering UA is a high quality company. This thing makes my PRS MT15 tube amp sound dead! Ultimately I've fully switched to running this direct to the mixer. It's now so much easier to mix guitar with the band as there is no stage noise. Even just mixing in with music for solo jamming is so much cleaner and easier with this. Headphone jamming is 10/10 too. There's too many options within the app to ever get bored. Plus each model has 6 unique flavors off of cabinet sun. So much fun and the nicest looking pedal I own. Believe it and indulge! The only cons are that the knobs are setup kinda funky but it all makes sense after playing around a while. Someone else said "screw the authenticity and give me a mids knob". I agree. Simple and familiar controls would make the "live" channel more tweakable. I always have to take a beat to remember that you twist them in the opposite ways too. Oh well. Unique and fun pedal. Legitimate amp replacement.

quite a nice take on vintage AC30

By Mike A. from Jefferson County, MO - South of St. Louis

The Universal Audio '63 Ruby is an excellent studio tool for recording tracks of the venerable AC30 direct to the DAW. I simply couldn't resist buying this after obsessing over reviews and videos. The '63 Brilliant and Trem channels, along with the '61 Normal channel, cover an important era in the history of rock music!
But, it's certainly expensive compared to alternatives that provide (for me, at least) more for the money.

In addition to stellar reproduction of the magic AC30 vibe, I have other necessary requirements:
- 1. Live performance (through my Tech 21 Power Engine 60 FRFR power amp).
I compared an AC30S1 side-by-side with a Headrush Pedalboard vs. the Ruby, both modellers through the PE60. To my surprise, the Headrush sounds closer to the real AC30. Not only does the Headrush do AC30 patches easily as good, but it can have many different AC30 patches available during a song, not to mention dozens of other amp models and a lengthy list of effects. Hmmm... Headrush MX5's cost very little more than the Ruby.
- 2. Playing at home.
I also compared the AC30S1 to a Vox AV60 amp vs. the Ruby through the PE60. Well, it happened again - the AV60 sounds much closer to a real AC30S1 than the Ruby through an FRFR power amp. The Vox AV60 suits me better than the Ruby for home use, and cost me very little more than the Ruby. That's 2 big surprises in a row.
- 3. Recording.
I prefer to record direct to a mixer without a mic. For this use there's no need for the PE60, but it's again between the Headrush and the Ruby. Here, it's close to a tie. The Ruby is real, real good, but so is the Headrush. Considering that the Ruby only records AC30 while Headrush does that, and lots more, the Ruby again comes in 2nd for my needs. {8^(

I'm still keeping the UAFX '63 Ruby. No matter what, it's still an important tribute to the AC30.

Tempted to sell my Dr. Z...

By Ted
Music Background: Singer/Song Writer, Engineer

Really fantastic emulation. I've been playing electric guitar for over 40 years and I'm shocked how good this is, especially with the room sound added. Even though you're restricted to 1 amp, there are many sounds available when you combine your hands, pickup selection and volume/tone controls. Its so easy to use this to get a fantastic sound, I'm afraid my Dr. Z Maz 8 may not be worth the trouble to setup... Bet you can't buy just one... Of these pedals!

An amp sim pedal that actually sounds like what it claims to be

By Bryan from Seattle
Music Background: Home recording artist

WOW.

I was previously using a Walrus Audio ACS-1. While that is a very good sounding amp sim pedal, to me it sounds only vaguely like the amps it claims to emulate. The Ruby certainly is less versatile, but it sounds like an actual Vox. The tone is so much more open and dynamic, and it actually has proper gain. The brilliant channel has loads of chime. For context, I used to own a Vox AC10 that I recorded through a load box, and this pedal responds amazingly close to that setup. Now I don't regret selling that amp.

The app is also very useful. I really appreciate that I don't have to plug in a USB cable or connect my phone to a 1/4 jack to change settings. Maybe this will encourage other pedal builders to use bluetooth.

My only gripes:

The brilliant channel can sound extremely mid-scooped. I had to turn the treble and bass way down to compensate. In general, they didn't need to copy the actual EQ controls of the AC30. There's a reason why most amps don't work this way. Screw authenticity, give me a mids knob and vibrato on every channel.

The review title says it all! Every report that says it is the closest thing to playing a real AC-30 is spot on. The app functionality and presets are also great. I have never liked amp/cab simulations, but it will be using this over my real AC-30 the majority of the time from now on.

A Game Changer For Real

By Dave G. from Connecticut

This thing into a super clean amp such as the Roland JC-40 may as well be a real Vox AC-30. It responds to pick dynamics, guitar volume control, and plays just like the real thing, without the vintage price or reliability problems that old Vox amps are known for. I had the Strymon Iridium and this is on another level! I've also had Vox amps and this sounds so spot on I defy anyone to tell the difference. And if it's hard for us as players to tell, patrons at bars/clubs certainly couldn't tell. But what is great is that unlike every modeler I've owned (all of them!) this thing provides that elusive amp in the room feel because it *IS* an amp in the room! This is so much more that just a pedal! Wow!

Almost forgot it wasn't a real amp!!...

By Javy B. from Ohio.
Music Background: Music producer, Arranger, Composer, MD, professional touring/session guitarist.

Simply Amazing sounding!!! after having a very disappointing experience with another device, I was very skeptical jumping to another thing. Well, after a very meticulous, diligent in Depth, and very educated research I decided to give this pedal a try, and since they seemed very good, I went ahead and got the Dream and Woodrow as well. I connected this pedal to my studio and started setting up my clean amp base tone and it sounded great. Well, the real test came when Sunday morning came and I took it to use it at church since that was the main purpose of getting it, and OM! the sound was ridiculous!! clean, articulate, warm, seriously dynamic, almost real!!! seriously... Just amazing, UA took this amp modeling thing to another level...

Amazing VOX Style Amp in a Box!

By Jp

I am an adventurous guitar and pedal collector. For years we all have dreamed of a single box enclosure that is capable of lush and complex harmonic vibes that a 60s VOXs makes.

There we have it finally the Tone Gods have Conjured such wizardry as last the Universal Audio Ruby's will enhanced your tonal needs that suites, "The Vintage 60s' VOX tone". It is so good that from your comfortable rabbit hole you will believe this cannot be replicated till right now. Trust me I have already tried it everyone else comes short.

Legendary Santiago help with its design and other very talent studio musicians and engineers. 5 Stars!!!!!!!

Believe the hype!

By Robert B. from Flowery Branch, GA

I've been searching 10 years for direct, amp-in-a-box option for chimey AC30 tones without a ton of stage volume. I've had a Tech21 Liverpool that has been my go to, but I've still wanted more. I've also looked into MultiFX, Iridium, Simplifier, etc, and just never felt convinced that it would be step up from my Liverpool. I even went for a real AC10, but I just couldn't get it to sing at the right volume levels. It really seemed like in order to get the sound I wanted, I'd have to spend large amounts of money to get a high quality amp.

Enter the Ruby. As soon as I heard about it, I knew I had to try it. Within 5 minutes, I got the chimey sounds I was looking for. It was night and day from my Liverpool. It even sounds better than my real amp!

This will be my go to for sure. If you're looking for a DI amp option, this is the one to go for!

Holy Cow! They've finally done it! (at least for me)!

By Rob M. from Summerville SC
Music Background: semi professional guitarist

To this point I have been unmoved by the digital amp industry. Like everybody. I have used them but If I had my choice, I'd always take a real amp. That is not to say that the industry just hasn't gotten it done until now. I have lots of guitarist friends who have crossed the Rubicon and use them exclusively. I've been really impressed with what OTHER people have been able to do with the Helix, Fractal Axe FX etc. I even have heard guitarists make great sounds with the HD500. But I have not been able to been able to suspend disbelief and lose myself from the reality that I was playing a modelled amp. I have always had this gnawing feeling that I wish I was playing a real amp. And it GETS IN THE WAY of me losing myself in the song: I'm always locked in this purgatory where I'm thinking about the SOUND and not WHAT I"M PLAYING!
Universal Audio has finally done it for me. This pedal FEELS like an amp. When I play it, I don't wish I was playing a real amp. It feels like I am. And even better, it sounds and feels like an AC30. The purgatory is gone!! And I don't know why. I think it may have something to do with what I have wished they would do for the longest time: All the power of this pedal is devoted to modeling ONE specific amp. The benefit seems to be noticed primarily in the top end. The top end is noticeably authentic. I have found most modelled amps to this point have an harsh or 2 dimensional top end. The Ruby has this round top end that completely wins you over to the high E string! And even better, that is the money shot for the AC30! I am ready to sell my amps. Really.
I have the Dream as well and the same can be said for that pedal. IT FEELS LIKE A DELUXE REVERB! And while I am a Deluxe Reverb man at heart, I am finding myself spending all my time on the Ruby. It isn't a matter of either being more or less convincing; its that the top end of the Ruby Is SPOT ON. While I have played AC30s I have never owned one, so I may be finding out that this amp has always been my preference. But If you want a Deluxe Reverb, GO FOR IT. You will not be disappointed.
I have to say that the Woodrow left something to be desired. Oddly enough, it fell short of feel. It felt a little sterile and uninspiring which is just NOT the feel of a 5E3!!! But it may be just me, as I am hearing great stuff from other players.
Suffice it to say that I have been pretty finicky about this technology and United Audio has finally won me over. That may help those who have been in the same place to this point. Give it a shot. There's nothing like realizing that I no longer have to worry about my amps developing mysterious problems that cost horrifying amounts of money to fix and require you to find a reliable amp tech within 500 miles of your amp. And that situation isn't going to get better as we are beginning to lose people qualified to troubleshoot and fix tube amps because it is a part of us living in a dying culture.

By Thomas G. from Albany

I have used this on a couple albums now and I have to say I often forget I am playing a pedal while plugged into it. It is right at home on a track along with my BadCats and VHTs! Im thinking of buying the Woodrow now after being blown away by the Ruby. Id buy this again in a heart beat.

Line 6 Powercab Plus 212 & the RUBY '63.

By Kent D.
Music Background: I was alive when the Beatles were still together.

Running the Ruby '63 into a Line 6 Powercab Plus 212. It's taking a long time to dial something in. I'm getting close, tho. I've tried the Ruby'63 through my DAW in stereo and through the stereo effects return of a Roland JC-40. Still playing with everything and subbing in a Strymon DECO. The Ruby '63 sounds better than my English made Vox AC-30. The pedal has more "air" and control than the actual amp! UA offers free ir cabs if you register your pedal. Excellent quality tone and a ton of tonal options to top bottom. Yes, I also own an Iridium. As a Vox Super-Fan, I wish to offer the Ruby '63 sounds better the the Iridium Vox style tones. FWIW, an old Strat>DECO>Ruby'63 stereo>Powercab, sounds authentic and inspiring. The Iridium is now for sale. I left these comments purposefully general...your mileage may vary.

Vox in a Box

By Richard N. from Winchester, VA
Music Background: Professional

I have owned a few AC30s, CC and C2X. I always wanted an early 60s AC30 and now I have it in this pedal. It sounds like the real thing and tone is amazing. I have an HX Stomp and a Stomp XL which I've never been happy with their AC30 preamps nor amp sim. This sounds real to me once you spend some time dialing it in. It does need reverb but the tremelo is awesome.

Possibly the BEST modelling available right now - SO GOOD!

By John from Texas

Since 2011 I have consistently been designing pedalboards that could cover, what I consider, the 'core amp tones'...those being Fender, Vox and Marshall. I've owned/tried all the amp modelers and their particular versions that were and are currently on the market and 80 percent of the tube-based preamp pedals as well. Some units were more extensive than others but it was usually always the same...just a different flavor, took time to dial-in your tone but...never seemed to be exactly what I'd hoped it would be tone-wise and always left me feeling there was something better. I recently bought and use every Sunday at church the latest/greatest all-in-one device and thought...finally that's the one! However, I was then introduced to the UA Dream '65 and all I can say is...this is what I've wanted for years in all the other devices I purchased! Just pure TONE that accurately replicates the amp circuit it's designed after. I've since bought the Ruby '63 and it is just as good as the Dream '65. When you can just play through a device and not have to constantly feel the need to compare it to a real amp but instead can just enjoy the experience, nuance and feel of the real deal...that's where it's at - the UA amp pedals are currently the best modelling available right now;)

A beautiful one trick pony

By Sweetwater Customer

If you want endless possibilities, versatility, midi and about 85% of the tone… get an AxeFX / Helix / Kemper / Iridium / AC1.

If, however, you want that extra 15% of quality of tone and amp response / feel and don't need all the extra options… get the Ruby.

It's just a better playing experience. The end.

Get it!

By Brian V. from Burl NJ
Music Background: Professional

This pedal is A-Ma-Zing! Everything from chimey clean to edge of break up (which is spectacular) to crunch to balls out lead. You can do it all and it's so realistic. Close your eyes and you'll think you're in the control room with a real vintage '63 AC-30 in the tracking room. It feels just like the amp. I want the other versions now too! Can't wait for a Plexi version.

I compared it to different pedals I have that do the same thing, but this one sounds very real. I record a lot and it's magical and musical. The app is a must for the presets! I'm very pleased with it and definitely a keeper!
