Great Loadbox/DI, Download the Free IRs

By Colten from Florida

I bought this because I moved into an apartment and still wanted to have the sound of my tube combo amp (Marshall DSL40C) without the loud volume getting that sound required. I planned on primarily using the attenuator function and using the load box function secondary (and using one the IR's I have) but when I purchased the product it actually comes with a free download for a program (Genome) that has some great sounding amp/pedal simulations, cabinet IRs, good studio effects, and great presets. Now I'm finding that I primarily use this as a load box for my amp, slap a cabinet IR on it, and my secondary use is as a straight DI and utilizing the amp sim program this came with. I don't use the attenuator on it at all anymore. The only reason I'm not rating it 5 stars is because the attenuator didn't quiet my amp enough (although that's probably more to do with my amp's loudness than the attenuator).

Absolute Must Have if you want to record your tube amps silently

By Derek S. from Ontario, CA

I have a couple of tube amps but I am not in the position to hook them up, dampen the sound, and then play loud at odd hours due to my work schedule. This lets you plug your amp's speaker output and tames it so you can plug into an interface on your laptop or computer. It's the sound of the tube amp itself so be sure to grab an IR loader or cabinet simulator so your recordings don't sound like a hornet's nest. Could not be happier with my purchase

Attenuator for Blackstar Studio 10

By J H. from AR
Music Background: Writing and playing music is my hobby

I use this to attenuate my Blackstar Studio 10 for quiet play in my bedroom. I can crank the amp into the sweetspot and not bother my sleeping wife. I don't regularly use the direct out but I tested it with my tascam mixer into some JBL studio monitors and it sounded great. The cabinet emulation was a tiny bit different from the real speaker/cabinet but to my ear sounded very good. The manual says it is based on a British Vintage 4 X 12.

Just what I needed

By Chris D. from Tucson, AZ
Music Background: Budding guitarist home player

I got this to work with my PRS HDRX20 amp. Like many have stated in other reviews the Torpedo does a great job at taming the 20 watts of power from my amp! So now I can push full volume without neighbors two streets over being forced to listen to my late night Blues jams!!

FINALLY, I can practice and play in my Basement without disturbing everyone - and still get the sound of "feel" of that Marshall tone !

By Cody M. from TOLEDO, OH
Music Background: 4 year beginner/ intermediate guitar player enjoying the Journey

I recently upgraded the speaker cabinet I had been using with my Marshall DSL 20watt head. Even on the 10 watt setting I was unable to really get the tone I was looking for and play the amp loud enough to REALLY HEAR IT and FEEL IT.

After speaking with Josh at Sweetwater, he steered me away from a "cheaper" attenuator and we went with the Two Notes Torpedo 16 (for the 16ohm cab) WOW!! What a difference!

I can now play at home in my "HAPPY PLACE" without disturbing the family, the dog or the neighbors. (Not too worried about the neighbors)

I can mow "FEEL THE BOOM" while playing at a volume that pushes the amp but doesn't make my ears bleed!

Once again, Sweetwater delivers (no pun intended) with a great product and a 1st Class Customer Service Experience!

SWEETWATER (and Josh) ROCKS, and NOW, SO DO I !!!

Does the job and does it well

By J C. from NW Indiana
Music Background: Noodler for 30+ years

Previously I purchased a less expensive device to attenuate my Friedman Runt 20 head. 20 watts needs to be tamed for the studio. The cheaper unit did the job but sounded somewhat dull. I need something that would sound as clear as my amp.

I own a Tone King Gremlin and I use it in my studio as well. Tone King has an attenuator built in. I was looking for something that would allow me to make those power tubes glow at a usable volume for my studio.

The Two Notes Torpedo Captor 16 is exactly what I needed and wanted. It works beautifully. I can't say enough good things about it.

Scratchy volume know, loud buzzing

By Sweetwater Customer

I ordered one of these and had to have it replaced because the volume know was scratchy and would cut signal. SweetWater sent me a replacement. It also had issues with the volume knob scratching, and it had a loud buzzing that I could not get to go away.

This thing makes my amp sing without bothering my neighbors (Orange Rocker Terror 15)

By Alan F. from Vista, CA
Music Background: Mancave rocker

I was running my amp at the 1 watt setting (bedroom switch + half power), now I've switched to full power and even at lower volume is sounds so much better than it did before. I really was not expecting to like it this much. Thanks to Jonathan for the recommendation, he never steers me wrong.

I have a nice amp but kept getting told I was too loud this solves that problem. Great product.

Good! Just what I was expecting

By Sweetwater Customer

I only use it as an attenuator and pretty nice for my room. Keeps things easy with my wifey. All good, soon will try the others features.

I really love it, but... lack of switchable attenuation over time has really become a negative

By Sean from USA

I really love it. It works fantastic, it sounds great. I love no power is required at all to use it as an attenuator only. It works fantastic with 35 watt and up amps. I have a 40W and a 50W combo that it's just perfect for. But on my small combos, it's just too quiet. The lack of switchable attenuation levels at first didn't bother me, but has grown over time to really be a negative and a distraction. You shouldn't have to get the Captor X to get different levels, especially if you don't need the advanced options of the X. Which I don't. Would have originally given it a 5, but it's a 3 for me now using it with multiple amps of quite different power levels. It would immediately be back to 5 if there was a level switch.

Pretty much garbage…

By Chris from PA
Music Background: Extensive

Not sure if I got a bad unit, but after a year and about a dozen different amps there is NOTHING that sounds good thru the Captor….makes even the best IRs sound like trash.

I'm sure it will make a nice, expensive paper weight, tho….booo Two Notes

Loved the idea, but not recording quality

By Josh N. from Oakton, VA
Music Background: Guitar for over 30 years - non-professionally, but with bands and collaborations.

I really wanted this to work to build a quieter home studio and record directly from my tube amp to DAC. The sound quality just wasn't there for me. I did contact both the vendor and Sweetwater support for help; but I was not able to get a satisfactory outcome. Since I spent weeks trying to get this to work, I went outside my 30 day return window and now I am stuck with this thing that I will never use. Using the amp and microphone was far superior in sound quality.

Outstanding bang for the buck for folks who don't need to load IR's on the gizmo

By Sweetwater Customer from CO
Music Background: Bedroom Warrior

I bought this solely to work on my DAW late at night knowing that I could tag an IR loader on it down the road if I choose to use it in a live setting. It does everything it needs to well without breaking the bank.

Must Have

By Will S. from TX

This is a must have for anyone with a tube amp to get that sweet sound at a low volume. Enables you to crank the amp heat up those tubes, but be able to turn down the output. Excellent product!

Just what I wanted.

By Sean G.
Music Background: audio engineer, songwriter/producer, summoner of dark tones.

This Loadbox is a solid investment for my home studio. I don't have the money or space to mic up a bunch of cabinets. So a Loadbox was an obvious choice to remedy this problem. The Torpedo is built very well. Bringing it on the road would not be a problem. It should hold up very well. The Wall of Sound software works very well with Cubase pro. The IRs given for free are alright, but you can get some great ones from their store for 10 bones a piece, or use your own. IF you are using this as a DI only, you don't have to follow the 16ohm load rate. The 16ohm load is only needed for the attenuation. All in all, if this unit was stolen from me, I would buy another in a heartbeat. Great product.

Amazing!!

By Orry F. from Syracuse

Idk why i waited so long to try one of these. I guess i was trying to hold off until i could afford the Captor X, but after much consideration i decided that i didnt need all of the extra features the X has, especially for double the price. I have no regrets for choosing the normal Captor. Definitely the best bucks i have ever spent. (Captor plus tax and a speaker cable) Ive owned an Egnater Tweaker 40 Combo for a little over 2 years now and the entire time ive owned it ive struggled to get a tone i actually enjoy out it. It just always sounded boxy and muddy to my ears and no matter how i placed a mic, or which mic i used i couldnt get a good recorded tone from that amp. After hooking it up to the Captor i finally like the tone of my amp and realized that its the cabinet and speaker that is the problem for me with that amp. The Captor retains that feel u get from your speaker in my opinion and being able to try out new cabinets and speakers through the Wall of Sound plugin makes for just about endless possibilities that all sound fantastic. Even the analog cabinet sim sounds great. Its a breath of fresh air for me. Also being able to run my amp at any setting i want completely silent is also a HUGE blessing. I live in an apartment and ive never had the option to hear what my amp sounds like when pushing it to its limits and getting the power tubes really cooking. Its so nice actually being able to hear what my amp can do at any setting. It also opened up the possibility of trying out some lower watt tube heads like the AC15CH or the Marshall Origins 20H without having to invest in a good cabinet to pair with them and be able to push those amps hard enough to find their sweet spots without making my neighbors hate me or call the cops. Lol. Im extremely excited about the world of possibilities this device has opened up to me, and i highly suggest it for anyone that's considering purchasing it. U wont regret it.

Great for Apartments!

By Gregory H. from Belleville, IL
Music Background: Producer, Singer/songwriter

Recently moved into an apartment so cranking my amp isn't really an option but modeling doesn't do it for me. The captor let's me keep all the feel of my real amp but record silently. The built in cabinet emulation works well enough but adding a cab IR is the way to go. I'm using the captor in conjunction with an Ac15c1 and a Mooer Radar for cab IR.

Taming the Orange TH30 Beast

By Jeffery R. from Georgetown, KY

I bought this to tame my Orange TH30. As you know with Oranges you really have to crank them and they are stupid loud. I live in a my own house in a subdivision so it isn't possible to crank. Even though the TH30 can go down to 7 watts, I've never been able to go past 1 on the volume without my wife or neighbors spazzing.

Got this bad boy and I can crank the orange to 1/4 volume on the full 30 watts and my wife doesn't freak. Really getting a great tone and being able to crank the amp. Haven't tried at the 7 watts but I bet I can crank it even further.

Get it to tame the Orange Beast!

Two Notes Captor

By Ryan C. from Richmond, VA

This thing is great; might actually be one of the best pieces of gear I've purchased this year. The 16 ohm version works great with my main amp which is a Vox AC15C1. With the Captor I can run the amp silently for recording or practice or I can flip the switch on the amp to 8 ohms and run it in parallel with the stock speaker. This is how I have been running it live. The built-in cab emulation complements the tone of the Vox amp perfectly and makes it easy to get a nice, consistent sound in my in-ears. I have not used the wall of sound plugin yet but will try to get that up and running soon. Overall this is a great versatile tool for recording and monitoring my amps.

2 Notes Captor

By Sweetwater Customer

This thing rules. I don"t have anything bad to say about the unit itself. The built-in cab IR is great too, and sounds pretty good right out of the box. Although, the wall of sound plugin is a little glitchy. 10/10 on the unit though. I"m using it to re-amp guitars and it hasn"t once let me down.

Two Notes Captor

By Don

So far I have only used the -20db setting, which is what I bought it for... Brilliant!!! it does not screw with your tone and makes a Diavlo 45w amp playable at bedroom sounds. Even if I never use another option on this device it is well worth the money!!

Thank you!

By William L. from NJ

I am grateful this product exists. Being able to record my Orange Rockerverb 100 and Create Vintage Club amps in early morning or late night sessions has been a blessing. I just can't get behind most of these guitar amp sims, at least those that I own. Even if I convinced myself I was getting good tone from one of my plugins, once I started mixing, they always seemed to turn into fizz.

The Torpedo Captor feels like I'm mixing a mic'd amp, and I love that. My songs sound full and warm with bold guitars that have natural sounding mid-range. I have a music project called PhantasmaPhonic and the past 10 or so songs on that Youtube channel are ALL done with the Torpedo Captor. Had I used my guitar sims, they would come out so much different.

I'm really enjoying the software, too. Being able to control room sound has really helped add depth. It has a ton of useful controls.

If you have great tube amps, aren't happy with your guitar amp sims, and don't have access to a live room to mic your guitar cabinet, strongly consider picking this up. Make sure you check your OHMS first, both my amps can run at 16, so pick whatever ohms are common among all your amps!

The 1 thing that bugs me slightly is the fan can get pretty loud. I like to work at low volumes and when my amp is cranked, so is that fan. When you run it passively, the fan will ebb and flow with your playing. So the harder you strum a chord, the louder the fan will be. It's kinda comical to be honest, but it does make me have to bump my volume up just a tad so it's no longer distracting. Just a heads up on that. My guess is most people probably won't care because it's not super loud, but it should be pointed out. Definitely not a reason to pass this up, especially when price is considered for what you get (hardware AND software with IR's ready to go)

Essential Home Studio gear

Must Have Two Notes Torpedo Captor (16 ohm)

By T-Bone from Southern California

This is the one box I don't think I can live without any more. The attenuation is perfect for being able to play my amps thru a cab and not shake the walls. The DI Out to an interface is great as the gain level allows for finicky interfaces as well as the built in cab sim as well as the Wall of Sound CAB sim software. Those are basically what I use this for. It sits between my head(s) and cab ALL the time. And it is usually plugged in with an XLR into my interface. Love this thing and the sound from the real amp and cab is hard to tell the difference with the -20db attenuation. Reactive is the way to go, Two Notes is the system to go with. Thanks Sweetwater for great products, great shipping and great support.

Great tool for home recording!

By John from North Carolina
Music Background: Experienced

I am very happy I bought this little box of awesome. I use it to send a direct signal from my amp into my interface, and then add an IR for recording and/or silent practicing.

I prefer using this method vs amp sim software as it lets you dial in your sound with almost no latency from your interface.

Perfect for folks that live in a townhouse or apartment where turning up tubes amps to recording/gigging levels is not optimal.

Like magic!

By Jeremy from Annapolis, MD
Music Background: Musician and Audio Engineer

Purchased to be able to record silently and in headphones with my Friendman head. This thing sounds fantastic along with the Wall of Sound plug-in. I am able to dial in a tone that sounds almost identical to my amp and cab in a room.

Previously I had been using an Eleven Rack (since 2011) for recording guitars. This will be replacing it for most of my tracking. I'll still use the Eleven for some speciality/effect type tones (for example, if I need to throw in a Fender Champ sound), but the Two Notes Torpedo will be used for almost all of my guitar tracking from now on.

The Magic Box

By Antonio R.

Let me start by saying , I've waited for something like this not like the cab clone which its really bad. I don't like purchasing the same stuff as other musicians, I'm always looking for something to make my own and this invention changed my perspective, I have all kinds of VST and plugins and the torpedo captor lets you use your own amp with different kinds of virtual cabinets. Recabinet by Kazrog its my favorite of them all not too fan of the wall of sound. My experience with the captor its the best feeling you could ever get plain and simple. This gonna make your recording studio or room into a beast, trust me you won't use anything else ever again. Yes ladies and gentlemen is that good.

Praise for a great tool

By Matthew H. from Twin Cities

I preordered mine in June of 2017. Took a while to get since it came in September.
I immediately had need for it in my older Mac Based Pro Tools 9.0 setup.
Recording my 100 watt Lee Jackson Head and an old Vox head for my bands release for early 2018.
Running Wall of Sound with this has made this such an amazing tool for great tone.
Worth the money. I plan on trying it live to see how it does in the mix, using the cab sim.

Marshall DSL-100 and Captor Load Box

By M H. from Texas
Music Background: 46 years playing guitar.

Just so you know, I have no speaker cab tied to my Marshall DSL head. I don't need a cab with the Captor load box. This 16-ohm 100-watt load box with built-in Line-out and speaker simulation just sounds killer and it hardly gets warm in my studio. And I can always use the Two Notes "Wall of Sound" plugin if I ever need to change up cab tones. Also, if I ever want to hook up my 1960a cab there's a 20 dB pad on one of the outputs ( the other is a thru) to bring the levels down when needed. Its built like a tank and works well. It fits on top of the Dsl's head and takes up very little space. BUY IT.

The Captor Rocks!

By Sin from Los Angeles, CA.

This situation the best piece of gear I've purchased in years. Be able to silently record my tube amps is killer.
The cab simulation is O.K. with some EQ applied, but the Captor really shines when used with IR's. I'm really impressed with the Wall of Sound plugin. Very easy to get great recorded guitar tracks. I didn't like the attenuator with my amps so much, but that's not what I got it for.

Excellent Reactive Load Box

By Derald from Hooksett NH
Music Background: Musician

The Two-Notes Captor is an excellent piece of equipment. Setup is simple: plug in your amp, plug in a cable to your DAW. You can also plug in a speaker (at full or -20dB). The Captor generates great tone and feel. I cannot tell a tone or feeling difference between the Captor and my cabinet. All of the jacks are clearly marked so it's "musician proof".

I use the XLR output with phantom power and I didn't have to adjust any simulated speaker cabinet setting, compared to the same setup with an actual speaker. Previously, I had a CabClone, which was pretty good. But when I plugged a speaker into it, the tone shifted. I had to make some adjustments to my simulated cabinets to compensate. With the Captor, I didn't make a single change - the tone was the same as when I use an actual cabinet (No-name cabinet with Celestion G12H).

I use the Captor in lieu of a speaker/cabinet in almost every situation. I've been using the Captor for about a week and I really like it. It is an upgrade compared to the CabClone. The CabClone wasn't bad, don't get me wrong. I would say the CabClone was 80% of the real 'speaker' feel and tone. The Captor is 100%.

I use a 50w Marshall head (Vintage Modern) at full volume with the Captor and it hardly gets warm. It's cool and quiet. I couldn't tell you if the fan is noisy because I don't think it even spun up.

I didn't use the speaker sim on the Captor other than to test it out. It works as intended, but I use WOS and cabinet simulators (IR) for my cabinets. I left the speaker sim "off" on the XLR output and strictly use WOS in my DAW (Logic).

I didn't need to use the phase reverse or the ground lift, but they're an option if the need arises.

The jacks securely hold my cables and I have no fear of the unit falling over or moving if I knock a cable, which I'm prone to doing sometimes..

The 16 virtual cabinets included are pretty nice, but I have spent the better part of two years dialing in a select few cabinets I already had, and I don't generally change them.

Overall this is a quality unit that I have no worries about. The unit is durable (in my limited testing) and feels like a solid product. I have no fear that the unit will break if I were to drop it. It doesn't overheat (or even get warm). The jacks are secure. The unit is small and pleasant looking. It has a few options for analog cabinet simulation (which I likely won't use). It had phase reverse (for mixing with a real cabinet) and ground lift. It is a 100% load box, and has options to plug in a speaker (at 100% volume or -20dB attenuated). That's a lot of features for a $ load box. Its $150 less than the industry-leader Suhr. I don't have the Suhr but I have no plans on buying one since the Captor gives me all I wanted in a load box (plus some other features that the Suhr doesn't have).

Two-Notes did a great job for $ and I applaud them. Quality hardware to go with the quality WOS plug-in.

I gave the Captor a 4.5 star rating, and here's why. 1) Its fixed ohm. Not a deal breaker, but would have been nice to have a switch to select 4/8/16 ohm if the need arises (I use 16 ohm with my Marshall). I'd have paid a few $ more money to have this option, just in case I get another amp that doesn't support 16 ohm. 2) The virtual cabinets are nice, all 16 of them, but I didn't get to select them. I registered the Captor and was given 16 cabinets. I didn't get to pick them from the Two-Notes virtual cabinet listing. I would have liked to pick my own cabinets, since 4 of the ones I got, I already had.

Kuddos to Sweetwater for getting me this unit in a reasonable fashion after two months on pre-order. Thanks to Sweetwater for even stocking the unit, can't find this at Guitar Center or MusiciansFriend.

You can't beat Torpedo quality and sound!

By Nick from Atlanta, GA
Music Background: 14+ years of guitar playing

I preordered this on 3/31/17 and it finally shipped out on 9/21. I just received it via UPS today (9/23) and I spent about an hour getting to know it. It looks awesome and it's not too big; about as big as any loadbox/attenuator out there. It's super easy to hook up and offers plenty of options to meet your needs. I bought this to add an emulated line out to my PRS Sonzera 20; also to have the 20dB pad of attenuation for reaching the sweet spot in my apartment. The pad is super helpful with my 20 watts of tube power; however, I could see how 20dB will not be enough for higher wattage amps in my situation. Two Notes may want to consider doing an updated model with more pad options/select-ability. I also got to try recording into Logic with the Wall of Sound software. I love the way the cabs sound!! You have so much control over the speaker, mics and room. It's really hard to beat!! It has met all my expectations and I'm super satisfied with this product!
