Tonex Capture Modeler
This thing seems like it is very difficult to use. Even with directions the time it takes and having a decent interface wasn't good enough. You need lots of inputs and outputs. I.K. Multimedia should have said "this is the interface we recommend you using" or if you have one that doesn't have a lot of inputs and outputs and good headroom for this unit to possibly work correctly. I would recommend using something else. Some people have good captures if all their hardware is good.
Worked great for me!
I spent hours looking for a cheaper alternative, all the pros and cons, and finally said screw it and just paid the $$$$ for this thing seeing I had already invested a lot into the Tonex and other items to do the capturing. It can be confusing and some clones turned out better than others so I'm guessing it's a combination of knowing how to work the Tonex stuff and all of your equipment accordingly, and/or possibly that the Tonex stuff does a better job on some things than others. Haven't used it enough to know for sure but I had great results on at least 90% of everything I threw at it
Amazing!!! Lifelong guitarist - Tube Tone Lover - don't understand other reviews
This is an amazing piece of gear for any guitarist or studio engineer (even a home studio). If connected correctly, it's easy to capture fantastic tones from any amplifier, preamp, and a ton of pedals too. On a personal note, I especially love the presence knob built into the tonex software. The only limit holding back the Tonex is the quality of your recording preamp and audio interface. I've run everything from 100W Marshalls, to lowatt amps, to homemade preamps, guitar pedals, overdrives, vintage stereo amps, AA5 tube radios, power amps, etc. Try it out. IMHO, if your captures don't sound near identical to your recorded live rig, then something else is wrong in your signal chain (most likely preamp or audio interface).
Make sure you have at least a 3 input Interface!
Captures sound great when you remember how to have all the wiring. It would be much better if I have an interface with at last 3 inputs / outputs. It makes it really difficult to capture when you only have 2 inputs and 2 outputs. It can be done but is a pain in the arse. They sound really good once you have done it like 10 times. It is better to have your gain maxed out and your eq at noon, I have found the captures sound better and you have wiggle room to re equalize the amp after to your liking.
Not as easy as they would like you to believe
I have yet to get a good Tonex capture using this device. I have tried to capture all three of my tube amps and always get feed back before I get a good input level. The unit does feel like it is made well but the routing is not as simple as the promos make it look.
What's not to like?
I'm confused by the other reviews. I got this unit last week and my first 3 captures are in the top 10 most liked on ToneNet this week. I'm not a sound engineer and this took me about an hour to figure out. Hint: If you don't know how to route signals on your audio interface figure that out first.
Bottom line is I'm perfectly happy with what this does and how it does it. I'm getting great results and setting it up was much less confusing than MIDI.
Could be better
Seems like it is built well but I have yet to be able to get a good capture. I can not put all the blame on the unit since there are so many variables in getting a capture. I can say after using this and my Rock Crusher to try to get captures that this is not needed if you already have a load box with a di out. I would have rated it higher but I still have not gotten a capture that is usable.
not for the faint of heart
it is a great unit, and once you figure it out, it works really well, but if you are a novice sound engineer, I would not recommend it at all. I have been an engineer for over 20 years, and it took me roughly 10 hours to figure out how to get this thing to work.
