More versatile than people think

By Sweetwater Customer on April 19, 2024

Can be used as an incredible single delay pedal with no presets, but of course you have 200 of those, and you can also use the Lo-Fi delay machine to pull off awesome chorus, vibrato, rotary, etc. tones. Still the superior value when you factor in reliability, resale value, onboard looper, and overall delay quality which none have yet surpassed.

Long time deciding

By David Malley from Olympia, WA on September 8, 2023 Music Background: 4 years into a musical adventure.

I took over a year to decide which delay pedal I wanted. I like Strymon tones and construction but due to the price of their stuff I evaluate as critically as I can without the ability to audition the actual pedal. I was interested in the iconic Bucket brigade effect and the ability to do dotted eight notes delays. I wanted a pedal that could recreate the U2 type delays. I almost thought about acquiring separate delay pedals that each had the capability I wanted but then the monetary outlay was close to the Strymon or even more. After listening to sound samples of the Strymon from various sources across the internet I chose the Strymon. It does a lot. It's close enough to the sounds in my head that I'm happy with it. Learning how a pedal works is always a learning process. I'm getting used to how Strymon designs their operational characteristics and features. Having one pedal with a range of possibilities is perhaps simpler than learning how many different pedals work. At my level and expertise, getting close is instructive and satisfying. There is nothing that turns me off about the tonal characteristics of the Timeline so I'm good for now. Nothing bugs me about this pedal. It does what I want and offers many avenues for exploration so I'm good.

Perfect pedal for synths + guitars

By Eric Richmond from Glen Rock, NJ on June 14, 2023

Amazing sounds, super versatile.

let's talk about the GOAT delay.....

By Paul on December 23, 2022

I had one of these a few years back, they have been around 10-11 yrs now. It was the state of the art then and it would seem nothing really reinvents the wheel or improves upon this unit to any significantly groundbreaking tech. I made the usual mistake of selling off my Strymon stuff for the latest greatest (at the time) Fractal FX8 and thought that would forever solve my need for delay or reverb. Lost story, already too long, I go through gear at an amazing pace it seems and somehow. I changed everything again and constantly looked for the working musically usefully delay and reverb. Feature wise, fidelity, bandwidth, buffer impedance, on board presets, to need to have to use a PC or Cell editor, and downright great tones with so many options; it seems as though new units may approach the GOAT TimeLine, but, it is not going to really out do it. Most fail to attain an "as good" comparison when you get right down to it.
Some major things for me: above all I am sick to death of knob dial delays, sick of tap tempo and adjust by ear, neither are the same twice. If you save the magic timing, hell on you if you have to redo it.
If I want a 335ms or a 610ms delay that is what I want, dead on. Plus, I also have the stupid knob turn-tap thing if I need it! Very few delay units have a ms readout now a days much less w the iconic quality, utterly ease of use, deep param adjust and very musically useful delays. I've had just about 80% of most stuff and I am back for my 2nd TimeLine and it's a keeper no matter what. I picked the TimeLine and the Flint as my delay and reverb/trem of choice. Give me an ms delay readout or it does not get up to bat.

Oh...

By Craig from SC on December 7, 2022 Music Background: I get paid. Sometimes.

After buying and using numerous delay pedals - some pretty darn nice - I understand why I have seen the Timeline on so many pedalboards; It sounds awesome. There seems to be an extra depth to this delay that is hard to describe - sort of like that perfect "transparent" overdrive. Also, it's pretty darn easy to scroll around with your foot. The looper works great, and the whole thing works really well live. It's worth the extra $.

TimeLine

There's a reason this pedal is held by many (at least within the worship context) as the best delay pedal. It's fantastic and has way more than you'll ever use. An all-around great pedal for anyone to own.

The best delay pedal I’ve owned.

By Michael on August 17, 2022 Music Background: Ex professional

This really is an incredible pedal and the best I've owned.

I always thought the delays in my big branded guitar processor were decent, but after trying this with my Marshall JVM amp, this really is astonishing the difference between this and the typical generic bland multi effect delay effect block in my floor unit

The dTape is my favourite but the analog is pretty darned good too. I mainly use these two modes.

200 preset storage locations are far more than I will ever need but to have somewhere to put and store for later a sound I dialled in is handy.

I'm going back to amp and pedals now. These modern processors have their uses, but to a guitarist, there's no feeling like the thump of a great tube amp and the feel of real pedals.

Strymon is the best.

By Chohn Hickman from Burleson, TX on August 5, 2022 Music Background: Worship guitarist.

Infinitely tweakable, this monster of a pedal does delays and swells like nothing else. You can't go wrong with a Strymon, and I have other Strymons, as well.

Beautiful sound

By Ben. from Vahalla NY on July 6, 2022 Music Background: Beginner always!

You need to understand how to run the TimeLine. BUT you got a beautiful sound and even better on stereo love it!

The New Standard

By Charles from Dayton, Ohio on May 3, 2021 Music Background: Post-post-post

I was first introduced to this pedal by a Rig Rundown video of Dave Knudson from Minus The Bear. Apparently I had been living under a rock, because it seems most of my favorite guitarists have switched to this pedal from their DL4s.

There's nothing I can say about this heavenly piece of equipment that hasn't already been said. Just want to add my five stars.

Awesome!!Awesome! Awesome!

If I can use it.......

By Mr. B from USA on March 13, 2021 Music Background: Amateur guitar player, professional broadcaster, sound effects creator,

Rarely do I purchase something I did not know much about, but after finding out about Strymon, and seeing the fun and creativity that was coming from using Strymon pedals, I decided to purchase the Timeline. I was only looking for a looper, but was disappointed by what I had to choose from. The Timeline has a loop function, but that is barely scraping the surface of what this pedal can do. Have you ever messed around with your instruments or whatever you are using to make music, and had one of those "goosebump" (chickenskin for my Hawaiian friends) moments.
I keep having those with the TImeline. Not only am I having them, but others I make music or even experimental sounds with are havening them. I got this pedal not only for myself, but also to share with those I collaborate with. When you say, "check this out", and other react in the way they do when hearing what comes from the Strymon Timeline, you know you are on to something good! I can't put into words how useful, wonderful, awe inspiring, thought generating, or pleasing this one pedal is, but given the chance, please check it out for yourself. You and those around you will not be disapointed!

Strymon is Awesome!

By Jeff from Missouri on July 23, 2020 Music Background: Guitar, Drums, Studio Engineer

Purchased the Timeline in September 2018. It's now July 2020 and the pedal still works perfect. It's always been in my studio, so I couldn't say how it would hold up on the road, but it's the best sounding delay pedal I've ever owned. I have a modded Line 6 DL4 and it just doesn't sound near as good as the Timeline. You won't regret getting this pedal if you want something with multiple delays. The Strymon Timeline is the best!

Great Pedal. I would recommend using a midi control for easy access to your commonly used effects. Also keep in mind that you will need a midi interface to be able to store settings and update firmware.

Review for the sceptical... The hype it real

By Eric B from Louisiana on April 29, 2020 Music Background: Weekend Warrior

I was sceptical to buy the Timeline. I also didn't want to just buy one to have something "Strymon" on my board. But after watching a ton of reviews and comparisons, and talking to my sales rep and pulled the trigger. Let me tell you... This pedal is on a ton of boards for a reason. It nails all of its delay sounds. It is a complex pedal, but that's part of why it's so good. You can literally adjust every aspect of every delay. So if you like to tweak, and you like using multiple delay sounds, this is the pedal for you

Probably the only delay you'll ever need.

By Odubb from Colorado Springs, CO on April 28, 2020

I've had my Timeline for a few years now and I am still thrilled by it. Sounds are top shelf, quality is superb, and it's pretty easy to use. I've lost many hours diving into this machine and exploring new sounds! It's that good. Running it in a stereo configuration sounds even better.

If Strymon ever updates this pedal I'd request the following:

- Touch screen interface
- A mobile/tablet app
- 1 minute looper time instead of 30 seconds
- USB connection to change/create settings on the fly, perform updates and preset backups (Granted, this is achievable via midi connections. But USB would be much easier.)

Nothing I mentioned is a deal breaker, but these would polish up an already stellar piece of equipment It's a winner.

Strymon TimeLine Multidimensional Delay Pedal

By Robert Hanson from East Bethel, MN, USA on April 5, 2020 Music Background: multi- instrumentalist

I am a multi- instrumentalist and I have never owned a pedal of any kind. This is the first stomp/pedal box I have ever purchased. Having seen, tried, and heard other artists rigs. I rarely liked what I heard.

The Strymon TMD pedal maybe the first pedal I have ever purchased, but it's been one of the best investments I have made in a while. I love this pedal. It's worth, its weight in gold.

For me, the Strymon TMD pedal has been inspirational. I love its versatility, ease of use, and maybe most of all it come packed with "useful presets" that are amazing. I can't say enough about Strymon TMD.

Excellent, worth the $$$

By KC from North Carolina on February 5, 2020 Music Background: songwriter/musician

Strymon just makes great gear, and Timeline is a perfect example. Just top notch, great in the studio, and built like a tank, I've had a Big Sky on my live board for two years and never had a single issue. Many more budget friendly options out there, but IMO, spend a little more and get a pedal that handles lots of different jobs, and sounds amazing. Going to add the Mobius, and between that, the Timeline, Big Sky, and Eventide H9 I can pretty much dial in any sound I need for studio, or live situations. 5 Star all the way.

Strymon makes some really good stuff

By Josh Allen from USA on October 3, 2019 Music Background: Mostly obbyist and occasionally professional

So a little over a month ago I had bought the Strymon Big Sky reverb pedal, and I was blown away with it once I got my hands on it. You can go check out my review for that pedal if you want, even though it's basically just me saying how awesome of a reverb pedal it is... Anyway, it was such a quality peice of gear, and I've always wanted a good delay pedal, that I went ahead and ordered the Timeline delay. I've had the Timeline for a few days now and I'm utterly impressed with it. I'm still playing with the pedal, trying to learn what it can do, but even with a few days of use I've been able to dail in a lot of great delay sounds. The presets are a good way to get started learning. Just pick a preset and then start playing with all the parameters. And while I already have a Boss RC-300 Loop Station for looping, I appreciate that the Timeline comes with a looper of its own. I've played with the Timeline looper a bit and it does everything you'd want a basic looper to do (record and allow for overdub). To conclude, I can't really add anything to this review that hasn't already been mentioned, so I'll just end with this: this pedal is legit, it's fanastic quality, and it's an amazing delay pedal that can do just about anything you'd want a delay pedal to do. I highly recommend it... I will also throw this out there: if you're wanting the Big Sky and Timeline but can't figure out which one you want first, just know that you can play with some of the delays on the Timeline and get some cool reverb sounds out of it. Now, in terms of range of reverbs, then of course the Big Sky is going to let you dial in far more specific types of reverb sounds than the Timeline. I'm just saying that the Timeline is capable of creating 'some' reverb sounds. So take that for what it's worth... But I recommend eventually getting both of them because they work very well together. You can get tons of sounds with just the Timeline, and you can get tons of sounds with just the Big Sky, but if you have both, well, that's just that many more sounds you have to play with. Just remember that you often get what you pay for when it comes to musical gear, and a lot of times it's worthwhile to keep saving for something good rather than biting the bullet early and getting something cheaper. In the long run, having good gear makes a TON of difference in the quality of music you're able to create.

Crazy Sounds

By GaryB from Lodi, CA on September 29, 2019

This pedal is absurd. I'm not a recording musician just a hack playing around at home. When I first got this pedal I couldn't really figure out how to use it. I'd set a delay up and then play. Once I sat down and went through a couple videos and read through the manual I started to realize how powerful this thing is. Then I learned about how to access the all the built in presets and was even more blown away. So glad I bought this pedal. I'm just not sure I'll ever figure out everything it can do.....wow. If you're not an expert, don't fret. Take your time with it and it will come.

WOW

By Jose from Spurs City on May 22, 2019 Music Background: rock star

bought it for acoustic guitar use and it's definitely worth every cent.
my biggest concern when buying pedals for acoustic is taking away the tones integrity.
I want it as clean as can be.
the mix knob definitely helps.
repeats are clean and crisp.
if your an acoustic guitar player and your looking for an awesome delay definitely consider this guy.
other options like the tremolo and tape delay are a plus to have for experimental purpose

This ticks all the boxes

By Simon Allaway from Chicago, IL on January 28, 2019 Music Background: Semi-pro

Much like others I have toyed with many, many delay units over my 35 years of playing. I love the fact that this Timeline can do pretty much everything I've ever asked of an echo unit. From crystal clear digital repeats to grungy low fidelity tape or bucket brigade stuff. And everything in between.

Within minutes of plugging it in I was able to program myself 4 presets that aren't just gimmicky bedroom indulgences but are actually musical! I always wanted to emulate Brian May's dual delay effect from Brighton Rock, and it was trivial to set that up with the Dual delay machine. I also love the shimmer/pitch-shift effects from the Ice delay machine.

I do not anticipate buying another delay unit in my lifetime.

Awesome Pedal

By Billy from Virginia on January 15, 2019 Music Background: 45 years experience

After going through probably more than 15 Delay pedals over the past 10 years. Finally l have the Delay Pedal that I have always imagined a Delay Pedal should be. I never could find one that I was satisfied with and I strayed away from the Strymon Timeline due to the price. I sure would have actually saved a ton of money if I would have purchased The Timeline when they came went on the Market.
There"s a little bit of a learning curve but I can say I need not look no further. Finally this is it.
Quality across the the whole Delay Spectrum. Discovering new features each day. I Love it.
AWESOME PEDAL.

learning to use delays all over again

By Paul from cave near the mountain peak on October 1, 2018

I almost made the mistake of maybe changing this out, and I took a second hard look at further capabilities and understanding the dual delay 2 settings better. Setting up a dual 8th and dotted 8th or a 1/4 and a dotted 8th will EDGE your brains out! The storage ability here, ease of tweak and save and for me a must ms readout with every imagined type of delay and some I have not even begun to learn. This is the flagship delay pedal and I had to really absorb more of its abilities to fully appreciate it! Make sure your software ver is up to date which is a bit of a pain using one of those midi to usb convert xfer boxes (cheap), but a more solid fully loaded delay is just not possible. Just added a Flint next to this and OMG, out of this world tones.

The Strymon Timeline is the max when it comes to any delay pedals I have owned. (lots!) The presets alone offer amazing options of delay and other delay related effects, The real experience starts when you start tweaking the setting to unlock all that this machine has to offer. The looper is a whole other outstanding experience. all I can say is Sweeeeet !!

The Perfect Pedal

By Christopher Sykes from Birmingham, AL on August 23, 2018

This pedal is everything. I've had multiple delay pedals, and this one is by far the absolute best.
The price tag is a bit high and all the features can be overwhelming, but the quality, sound, usability, and versatility is what makes this pedal amazing. There is a reason you see these on most every professional pedalboard—because it really is that good.

Also a big Thanks to Mason who has always been a big help whenever I need anything!

This device is smarter then humans

By Joshua Metzger from USA on April 22, 2018

I must say that the timeline is impressive .
Has a lot of futures that no other delay pedals have like midi beat clock input and thru out . I hooked it up to pro tools clock and it does tempo changes like a champ . What"s really awesome is you can turn off the modulation effect from when the delay time changes so it doesn"t make that pitch shift noise which is cool but not for every single time the tempo changes lol . I really love the dtape echo but also like the dbucket and the digital delay . They all have a use and react differently to your playing which is cool because if you want crisp clear delay you can go digital , if you want warm analog delay you can use the dbucket , and the tape delay is the best I"ve ever heard , super realistic sounding compared to any others I"ve tried . I havnt even begun to scratch the surface , but all I can say is if you ever get the chance to sit down and try the timeline out or if you want your delays in perfect sync with your daw then get the timeline , you won"t be disappointed.

Terrific Delay Pedal

By Steve from Bucks County, PA on March 8, 2018 Music Background: General -- Weekend Warrior

When researching what delay pedal to buy, I initially looked at a Strymon, but was concerned about the price. Going on the cheap, I decided to purchase another highly rated pedal (the Andromeda by SD) as a way to save a few dollars. Well, while the Andromeda was (is) a nice pedal, I returned it after about a week. Don't get me wrong, the Andromeda had terrific sound, but I found it a bit cumbersome to operate playing live, particularly when using it for songs requiring 2-3 different presets. My Sweetwater rep, Jozy, was very helpful in coordinating the return.

Long story short, I did a bit more homework on the TimeLine and decided to make the purchase. I don't regret it at all. All of the reviews I read, plus the YouTube testimonials are true. This is one pedal that actually live up to the hype!

For me, the two best features are the 1) incredible sound quality and 2) its ease of use while playing live (i.e., its ability to easily navigate between presets). Concerning the sound quality, I have a Marshall JVM 210h with a Mesa Boogie cabinet. I was concerned about altering the incredible tones I get from my setup. Well, suffice it to say, I couldn't be happier with how the TimeLine sounds. Plugged into the FX loop, there is no degradation whatsoever of the sound quality. In fact, dialing in a little delay or chorus effect actually seems to enhance the sound (if that is possible!).

If you are looking for the best and have the ability to move up to the higher price point, go with the TimeLine. You won't be disappointed. Otherwise, you may always be thinking, "what if . . . ."

Beautiful delay!

By Kevin Lozano from Elk Grove, CA on March 5, 2018 Music Background: Guitar player, drummer and bass.

The timeles strymom delay has exceeded my expectations in sound. I own the boss dd7, TC flashback 2 and now Timeline. In comparison to the other delays that I own this one is the most experimental pedal I have ever owned you have unlimited possibilities in sounds textures and atmospheric pleasure to your ears. There is a learning curve and it will require patience to go through all of its parimaters and possibilities but a rewarding experience. I love delays and reverbs and making drone ambient shogaze music for my vacation Captur a landscape and Ariel drone videos and this will help me achieve my goals on completing my album.

I absolutely love the BPM option, it helps me sync the delay time to my drums in post processiong, the presets are a good palette for crafting your own sound and actually most of them are usable. I love the auto swell, it really almost eliminates the need for volume pedal.

Thank you Sweetwater and thank you Strymon I absolutely love all of your pedals and I think need the Mobius next.

The TimeLine is an amazing pedal. I upgraded from a Boss DD-20 and I'm still learning how to use the pedal to the full extent because it is literally a computer in a pedal but so far it has been a great experience!

Definitely recommend, maybe not for amateurs, but for any intermediate or higher-skilled guitarists looking for an awesome delay.

Strymon TimeLine

The Strymon is the best delay ever!!! I never see it leaving my board. I hook it up to my MacBook through a midi to usb interface. I love Nixie the Strymon program for backups, organization, and creation. My personal favorite delay machines are the tremelo, digital, and swell.

The only thing I wish for is that a and b could be stackable. However, it"s not that big of a problem and will continue to outshine the boss DD-500 any day.

Amazing Sounding Delays and Echos!

By Nick Heser from CT on September 11, 2017

This is my second Strymon purchase. My first was the Big Sky which blew my mind. I run both of these pedals into the effects loop of my Friedman BE100 which powers two 212 Friedman cabs. The sound is huge and incredible. It is easy to program once you get a few patches created. This box is very inspiring and can be hours of fun. I usually just run a few simple nice delays (digital, analog, and tape) The Dual Delay is like an old Deluxe Memory Man, where you can add a chorus effect to the repeats (amazing on clean tones). Reverse Delay is fun to do those backwards Hendrixy lines, but is also amazing to create a sort of background loop to play over. I love the fact that the Timeline does not bury your tone in a cloud, even on crazy setting the pure tone of the amp and all the definition shine through. These two Strymon pedals sound very good together and are worth the price of admission. Extreme clarity yet organic. Worth it!

Outstanding!

By Brandon on August 31, 2017

I've been through many different delay pedals, never using less than two on my board at any given time. That ended when I bought the Timeline. The capabilities are absolutely excellent. What's more is the surprisingly user-friendly interface. Ive owned the Eventide TimeFactor and it was a pain to edit and not the easiest to use live. I had the Timeline figured out in minutes and it's simple as anything in a live setting. Coupled with the Big Sky (best reverb pedal EVER), I will never need another reverb or delay pedal again.

There's so much you can do with this. I've had it for almost a month and I'm still exploring it's possibilities. I use MIDI to change programs and I'd highly recommend that because it would be labor intensive to use the foot switches to change banks if you have several patches programmed. Strymon or Echolution?

By Lucas from Miami on June 19, 2017 Music Background: Guitarist, Producer

There are 26 positive reviews about this pedal so I won't reiterate anything. I compared the TimeLine with my friend's Pigtronix Echolution, which is another cool pedal in the same price range. Worth checking both out. The echolution has some unique effects. But the Strymon takes the cake for me because it is just so much fun and easy to use. The preset button and banks are critical. Im accumulating strymon pedals and they are all great thus far. All are good on synths, keyboards, and for FX bussing.

I've owned my Timeline for about 3 weeks now and cannot put my guitar down. The interface seemed difficult to sort out at first...but I soon figured out how the controls worked to change parameters and to save my custom settings. I feel inspired to play; I can't remember the last time I felt that way about playing guitar. It is very easy to get sonically pleasing sounds from this device. The Timeline has the special quality of having the ability to sound overtly awesome AND subtly awesome too depending on how you configure a setting. Sure, it is not a cheap pedal, but you certainly get what you pay for in terms of effects quality, pristine fidelity of sound, and build quality. Plus, it is made in the good 'ol USA! Strymon's website has some very nice presets on their page too. I'd recommend checking that out if you purchase a Timeline. There are other websites with user-created discussion boards on custom settings.

My last tidbit is this: Robben Ford uses a Timeline! If it's good enough for Robben Ford, it's good enough for me. I am a Strymon fan for life now and cannot see myself parting with this pedal. I do see myself getting more of their pedals in the future, starting with the BigSky reverb.

My gripes are small:

1. I wish there was a USB connection to backup presets. To be fair, saving of presets can be done, but it is done via MIDI interface. By no means is this a deal breaker, just an inconvenience.

2. I wish the looper was longer than 30 seconds. It is exceptionally fun to use, but there are times when 30 seconds is too short. Not a deal breaker either.

Fantastic, all-purpose delay

Absolutely outstanding delay system (I hesitate to call it a "pedal"). The Timeline is highly flexible and produces a wealth of different tones, but that comes at a cost of complexity. Once you've mastered the knobs and parametric inputs, it becomes much easier and intuitive to use; it just takes some time and patience.

One thing I haven't yet done is any MIDI programming, tying the Timeline with my Boss ES-5 switch. Some YouTube videos make it seem somewhat trivial, but the end result will be worth it. So, still lots of learning to do with this system. BTW, this thing absolutely eats power. I have this coupled to a Strymon Zuma pedal, which is equally superb due to its high current capabilities (500mA per port!!)

Sonically, the output of the Timeline is second to none. Absolutely pristine, crystal-clear effects, all of which Strymon has a well-earned reputation.

Great stuff! Five stars.

Everything i hoped for

By Mark Artyniuk from Creston BC on March 31, 2017

Started with the mobius... The most complete modulation pedal ever for me. Then sold my reverbs and bought a big sky.... Amazed. It was only a matter of time before the timeline found a home on my board and it fits right in to say the least. I'm not a big delay user, but the ambient effects this thing is capable of is just so inspiring, I enjoy playing more and that's a good thing.

Amazing best pedal I have ever owned

Beautiful sounds, many options. Fun and exciting. Professional quality.

Sweet!

Great on the fly capabilities. Sound is equal to or better than my Fractal and Eventide units. Excellent quality.

Great Delay!!!

Limitless

By Nick from Mississippi on December 24, 2016

Tremendous sound quality, build quality, and versatility.

You can get any delay sound imaginable from the Timeline with impeccable sound quality.

This won't be my last Strymon petal, but it will be my last delay.

Awesome Delay

By Philip S from VA on November 28, 2016 Music Background: P&W

So, I own a TC Nova Delay and I love it. I travel with my wife and am able to use up to 9 presets for our set lists, however, I'm only able to use up to 9 presets; so I spend a lot of time tweaking and resetting presets. It was time.

I went ahead and purchased the timeline. And WHOA. I didn't realize my tone could get better, but it really got better. I mean, my tone sounded crystal clear and better than it did running thru the Nova Delay. The delay machines all sound amazing. If you're on the fence, do not hesitate to get it.

There are a few things you'll need to know, but they are not show stoppers. First, you'll need an aux switch because switching banks is extremely complicated without the switch. Also, you'll need to purchase an additional midi to usb cable to get full use out of the library software.

But don't fret or delay. It's well worth it. Get it!!!!

Simply the King

By Carlo from Los Angeles, CA on November 26, 2016 Music Background: Experimentor

At this point I own the Boss DD-500, Source Audio's Nemesis, TC Flashback Triple Delay, Eventide'/ Timefactor and this is by far the best delay engine out there, the algorithms are just something else, this company is a perfect example of amazing engineers with great ear for musical sounds... It's been out for a while and even though yhe Nemesis comes very close at dethroning the Timeline it comes a little short only because of the size of the unit, it's actually a tie between those two... but if you have the money... I would get the Strymon... the absolute Kings when it comes to Delay and Reverb...

Excellent Product

Best delay

By Israel Perez from Santa Ana, CA on August 30, 2016

I upgraded from a boss dd-20 to this and man what a difference. I use it for worship and this pedal covers any and all delays I need. It is a but difficult to grasp all the settings within the patch at first, once you spend the time it is second nature. Great having presets saved for each song on the set list and I have an option to set a delay time for each preset. Don't delay get this pedal.

Incredible Machine!

By Mark G. from MA on June 8, 2016 Music Background: Hobbyist musician, sound and recording engineer

I could be wrong, but I think that anyone who is willing to shell out the money for this piece of gear already knows what they are getting into. This pedal has so many sonic possibilities that it would take years of spending time with it to dial in all of its potential. I have had it for a few weeks and have primarily been using the presets (I am in graduate school so time is at a premium right now). The presets are amazing. Unlike many other devices that you might use that pretty much are a variation on a sound when you tweak the preset, these presets change completely in character when you tweak the various nobs. Within one preset you can make radical changes to the original sound. This thing goes deep. The primary reason I shelled out the dough for this one is the sound quality and spatial expansiveness of the delays. This thing is simply incredible. I look forward to many years of tweaking and discovering hidden sonic worlds when I have more time to dive in.

Amazing Delay

By Sweetwater Customer from NC on March 25, 2016 Music Background: Semi-professional musician, church guitarist, etc.

This is a truly incredible delay pedal. Every function you could ever dream of is in this pedal, and the sound quality is second to none. The features expand even more if you add MIDI or an expression switch. If you play in a live setting, the Timeline makes it a breeze to quickly bank through presets. With the SPL software (available from Strymon's website) and a simple MIDI/USB cable, you can save all your presets to your computer, rearrange the order of banks and presets, and load saved presets from your computer. I can program my entire set-list in a matter of seconds! The delay machines are fantastic and are tweak-able beyond what any normal person would ever need, but yet are simple to use. The tape may be the best sounding delay I've ever heard. The low-fi gives you grit without trash (unless you want it), the analog can modulate as well as sacred memory men, and the dual is extremely tweak-able and has the power of two 2290 rack units. The digital engine alone would be enough to cover 99% of all delay sounds you could ever want, thanks to the filter knob. The repeat dynamics function allows you to use high repeats and mix and the same time, but it quiets your repeats after the first few so you still get the bed of sound and the immediate noticeable echo. If you're looking for textures, swells, or unique sounds, the reverse, ice, smear are all incredible. I could sit and play with them for days. The stereo function works very well for creating space, and the internal parameters are simple once you learn the basics. Read the manual if you really want to get crazy with it.

Bottom line: BUY THIS. It's expensive, but you'll likely never have to buy another delay for your entire life.

Worth it?

By David Hogeboom from Davidson, NC on March 25, 2016

If you want simple, there are probably better choices than the Strymon TimeLine. Though the factory presets do afford you some great delay options AND the opportunity to wade slowly into the deep end of all that this pedal has to offer. If you love a learning curve - the TimeLine is pure romance. I'm able to get a wide range of incredible delay effects, from subtle to deep luscious stereo magic.

You're going to need space on your pedalboard and plenty of power (300ma needed).

Worth it? Yes. Definitely.

Impressive

By Sweetwater Customer on March 8, 2016

This pedal is incredible. I'm amazed by how warm it sounds given that it's a digital delay. I'm very happy with my purchase.

The Delay to end all Delays

By Dan from Pequannock, NJ on April 6, 2018 Music Background: I gig 2x a month

You can tailor 200 different Patches and name them for the songs they"re for. At first, the pedal can seem overwhelming. I took the time and sat with it for a few hours. It really is an amazing tool. I had to knock it a little bit for the cost. That said, it"s a permanent fixture on my board and I couldn"t be happier!

Great delay

By Nuclear Guitarfare on March 15, 2018

I run a midi controlled rig so the strymon flagship pedals are a no brainer. I get complete control over everythingi do still keep my tc electronic flashback in my rack though as my standard delay for leads and clean. But the timeline is my ambient creating insanity delay. Can't go wrong with 200 delay settings at your disposal. Theirs a lot of people put off by the price and claim it sounds too digital but that is nonsense. Worth every penny and it loves to be run through the loop. Thats where the magic happens.

most excellent

By BH on May 11, 2017 Music Background: Ex-pro player, session musician

I' give this 5 stars but there is room for improvement on the computer management side (which I think they are working on). Has the great strymon sound. Typical and crazy cool sounds. A great all around and special effects pedal.

Powerful delay machine

By Mike from New York on January 9, 2017 Music Background: Musician and producer.. I've been playing since the '60s and have worked with a lot of well known folks.

Really lush analog sounding delay with a boatload of control. I have piles of delay pedals, from very simple vintage analog units to very complex modern boxes like the Eventide TimeFactor. This unit has features from both of those worlds. You can dial own a pretty quick sound using one of the delay types and fiddling with the front panel knobs. You can also go deep with the multiple functions in the menus by pushing the value and type knobs. There isn't as much editing power as in the Eventide box, but there is a lot there. The swell and LoFi settings are particularly great... for my purposes. Lots of possibilities here.

Excellent sounding delay, awesome tone, realistic!

By Sweetwater Customer from Chicago on March 29, 2016 Music Background: Semi

If your looking at this pedal your probably know it's awesome. If you want a simple plug and play delay...THIS IS NOT FOR YOU! It's actually complicated to use TBH that's why I only give it 4.5. Had to read instructions on how to go up 1 bank and down 1 bank. Also you may not know that it sounds just as good on bass live, live vox(with some it on an aux-for me I run mic into JDI direct into Xotic Effects XBlender into JDI direct out), and a stereo aux on my drum 2 bus for recording. Possibilities are endless with this thing. Plus you can get some sounds that you wouldn't think sound like delay at all, more like a synth or something.

Delay for days!

By Rob Pags on March 8, 2016

I own the Eventide H9 and this unit is very comparable. Timeline is solid. Built like a tank with prestine sound. A must have pedal for anyone looking for a digital format unit. Only down fall is strymon does not provide a list of presets. There's really no way of knowing what the presets are without making your own chart.

Strymon is amazing

By John G from Benicia CA on February 7, 2016

Any delay you want, it's probably here. Timeline has stereo ins and outs so keyboardists and electronic drummers (like me) don't have to sacrifice their stereo fields.

If you're looking for a full-featured delay stomp box, I suggest you check out the Strymon Timeline, Eventide's Time Factor and the Boss DD-500.

Fantastic

By Eric from Illinois on February 3, 2016 Music Background: guitar player

This thing sounds fantastic. The 200 presets are a nice way to wade in to this pedal because its seriously deep. They make a great jumping off point for creating my own sounds, but some presets are total keepers as is. Its no problem to dial in awesome delay sounds of all types either. I think the output buffers that allow the repeats to trail off contribute a wonderful euphonic quality to my large pedal board. I already had one buffer on there, but this seems to make things even better. The TimeLine essentially comes with all the other delay pedals Strymon makes built in, so while expensive, it's fully loaded. Its also rock solid and comes with a power adapter. A copy of the manual would have been nice though, rather than just a quick start guide, because the manual is necessary.

Great Delays but...

By Dennis from Holly Springs, NC on February 5, 2022

CONS

1. Looper is short, looper has zero memory. Looper needs memory to be useful. Turn it off/on, nothing. Looper takes up a LOT of space for short/no-memory.
2. Seriously, you have to turn the top left knob to check out the presets?
3. This thing takes up some serious power. NO way you can run it on a battery like, say, the Boss 500s.
4. Duel delay can't do U2 with authenticity. Ppl try. No one can make it sound just right it seems. Maybe I'm wrong in this. But it's not duel-ee enough for me.
5. For the price, the display could be better. Ancient 1970s display of no colors. Bleh.
6. I'm thinking... this is still too big. I don't think this pedal needs to be this big.
7. While it has many delays of it's other products, it does NOT have the controls of it's other products. This both makes those other Strymon pedals useful, but also makes this a Jack-of-all-Trade but Master-of-none kind of deal. That said, it's not as bad as that, but its noticeable if you own one of their other delays.

PROS
1. 11 different types of delays is.. fantastic. Esp for the price.
2. Lotta buttons for controls.
3. I/O is really good options
4. Software is fantastic and not buggy. Kudo's
5. Looks great, love the color
6. The looper switches work very well and you can figure out the timing like it needs to be. (unlike some competitors buttons)
7. Price is actually quite good. Considering their other pedals are $ in the range. And.. .if you get 1 Strymon Delay and a Looper you're in this price range. So.. all in all.. I think the pricing is good.

My attitude is, if you go for the GOAT of delays and charge accordingly, you gotta hit it out of the park. This has compromises on some of its emulations controllability, the looper is lacking, its a large pedal and it needs MORE functionality to be usefully that large (ie Looper with memory, or larger screen with colors or touch sensitivity) This may be "the best all-in-one" delay pedal on the market. But.. I'm thinking there can be another. You're left still probably buying another delay if you like duel delays and another looper if you seriously need a looper, making this extra space you do not need.

Don't get this thinking it's the only delay you'll ever need. Don't get this if you are trying to save on duel delays or a looper pedal. Get this if you love delving into delay crafting, & creating with the software. When a pedal gets this large with multiple features, it starts lacking in controls. For example, how do you get to song 30? Click... click... click.. 27 more clicks to go. Gotta be another way. Oh, yeah, iPad, etc. But then why so large a pedal?

Story on Timeline multidimensional delay

By Melvin from Knoxville on May 7, 2016

This is good product but the user manual online is weak. I am sure there is much more to this that I am not using because the instructions are not clear.

Nice delay but with some issues

By Jake on April 13, 2016

Was happy to see Sweetwater become a retailer for Strymon. I purchased the Timeline soon after they were in stock.

I play lead guitar on a worship team and the Timeline almost seems like a necessity for some of the modern worship sounds. Many resources exist online for song's and artist's (google search) patches plus getting them to the Timeline is a breeze using Strymon's Library manager. I didn't have much time initially to dive deep into modifying the presets, so I used a couple installed presets until I could program my own settings.

Sound quality from this pedal is excellent. Once I started setting up my own patches I found, for the most part, programming was fairly intuitive. There were certain programming functions that required me to consult with the informative user manual. For instance, depending on the type of delay selected, certain knobs vary parameters associated with those types. It's fairly easy to navigate through the menus and very easy to save your patches to a computer using a midi to USB interface. I also own a BOSS DD-500 and will say, due to the absence of a patch manager like Strymon's, I tend to favor the Timeline over it for now. BOSS really needs to come up with an easy to use Library manager.

The only problem I have encountered with the Timeline so far was a steady tone being generated by the unit when I adjusted the GRIT knob. The results were replicated on numerous presets and, depending on the program, generated a huge noise floor if left to persist. In other words, it didn't cease when the knob was no longer being turned but continued to emit the steady tone once initiated. A factory reset didn't fix the issue and worse, if I saved a patch with the generated tone, it became part of the patch sound. I ran through all the normal isolation attempts prior to contacting Strymon and Sweetwater. I was barely within my return window and if this was a serious issue, I wanted to get a replacement.

I will say Strymon's customer support, in my opinion, is one of the best in the industry. They responded immediately to my concern and started providing recommendations to help identify the source of the problem. This was their response:

"From what you describe, the noise you are experiencing is likely coming from a pedal in your signal chain that has a charge pump component inside. This noise is usually not audible in the audio band, however, the TimeLine's GRIT parameter will actually re-introduce this noise back into the audio due to how that function works to introduce distortion and noise into the audio of the delay repeats. Some pedals that have charge pumps are the Centaur Klon and other Klon clones (like the Archer), some pedals by Walrus Audio like the Voyager or Deep Six, and others. This noise is normal when pairing the TimeLine with pedals that have a charge pump. Turning the GRIT parameter all the way down and saving the presets this way is the workaround when using pedals with charge pumps in your setup before the TimeLine."

As it turns out, I do have an Archer pedal in my signal chain. I found I can leave it there and as long as I "sneak up" on my desired GRIT setting I can avoid the tone generation and my saved patch won't have it present. A minor inconvenience, but thanks to Strymon' quick response, my mind was put at ease concerning the pedal's operation.

I will mention I also contacted Sweetwater when this issue came to light. I received this response:

"We received your technical support request and someone will reply shortly."

but was never contacted directly by Sweetwater afterwards. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt by assuming they may have contacted Strymon on my behalf to expedite the resolution. Hard to say since I contacted both of them initially. I would suggest if this is what occurred, a followup email from Sweetwater stating they contacted Strymon with my issue would be helpful rather than have me assume my concern was ignored or mishandled.

Timeline

By Bill Kelly from Liberty Lake, WA on May 5, 2023 Music Background: Multi-instrumentalist semi- pro many years

First one didn't operate right. They sent a new one... a few months later, now I've discovered the looper doesn't record half the time. I'm thankful Sweetwater has a two year warranty. For what you pay for Strymon gear, I would think it should work properly for years to come. This is why I'm giving only 3 stars. I was going to buy the Big Sky reverb also, but... I am leary with the brand! There are so many other great pedal manufacturers. I was hoping for more from Strymon. Although, It does have a spacious sound like no other. It has any setting you need. The first gig I used it on, the thing was too much! Sounded great at home but I must have had the mix too wet. So I couldn't even use it on that gig. My fault!
I've been using pedals for decades!
You have to TRUST them to not fail or function as they should. And use the best cables too, so ya don't CRASH and BURN!!!!
Sweetwater has always done a stellar job of making things right. Thanks
