The Closest Thing to Calfskin

Drummers who swear by calfskin heads for jazz and classic rock have another option in the Evans '56 Calftone series. These synthetic drumheads have the look, feel, and sound of real calfskin, yet they offer the modern innovations Evans is known for - Level 360 collars for better seating on bearing edges and weather resistance for a stabler tone. And at just 7-mil thick, Evans '56 Calftone heads are more sensitive than even the thinnest hide heads. Evans tested its '56 Calftone heads against countless calfskin heads to ensure their authenticity, and Sweetwater is sure drummers across the board will enjoy grooving to their classic tones.

Evans Drumheads: celebrating 60 years of innovation

Evans celebrates its 60th year in the industry with the debut of its '56 Calftone series. It's hard to believe that only 60 years ago, drummers had no other options than calfskin and rawhide. But Chick Evans and company helped change modern music forever by making synthetic drumheads available to the masses. These today include the popular G2 and EMAD heads for drum sets and Tri-Center heads for world percussion. Sweetwater is proud to stand behind the Evans' name by providing its innovative drumheads to our customers. Happy anniversary, Evans!

Just the Right Look..
Just purchased this 16in. head to finish off my refurbished kids size drum kit. Love the retro look. I ordered here at Sweetwater for the first time and it was delivered 3 days later. Great Service & threw in little candy bag to boot. Tell the boss, sales staff,warehouse/everyone Great job. From Dave in Illinois ~ ~ ~
Music background: drumming for 51 years ( wow I don't feel that old) lol..
Evans calftone head
I put a 14" calftone on my 14"x6" snare with wood hoops & claws, looking for that old time sound. It sounded OK. I played it 2 to 3 hrs. a day. Within 3 weeks the coating started bubbling & de-laminating in the sweet spot where I hit very consitantly (very short time for durability). I changed to a real calfskin head from Stern Tanning, a lot of work mounting & maintaining but 3 months later the head sounds better all the time. Very expensive but it will never bubble & it has the real sound & for the cost of replacing the calftone 3 times plus the cost of the first one it will pay for itself. I've used Remo Fiberskin and they are more durable but don't come as close to the real sound of calfskin. I think if Evans gets their laminating process perfected, they will have an affordable head that sounds as close to calfskin as a plastic head could, and I would consider using them again. Much less work & maintenance.
