50 Preset Kits Inspired by the TD-50, Plus Room to Grow

With sounds and features inspired by Roland's flagship TD-50, the V-Drums TD-17 sound module makes an attractive option for the pro and intermediate eDrummer. 50 preset kits and 310 drum/percussion sounds equip this module for virtually any style of music, from world music to EDM and metal. User sounds can be imported as WAV files via SD/HC card — a first for a V-Drums module at this level — and saved to any of 50 user kits, as well as blended with stock kits and further edited using the TD-17's powerful processing and effects engine. Another impressive feature is the TD-17's onboard Bluetooth transceiver, which both streams music from your phone for practicing, jamming, and recording, and sends MIDI to your DAW over Bluetooth (at the cost of a little latency) for tracking made easy. Of course, for rock-solid record applications and legacy setups, audio/MIDI over USB and a traditional 5-pin MIDI output are also available in the Roland V-Drums TD-17.

Sounds based on the TD-50

Sweetwater reviewers are pleased to report that the TD-17 holds its own even against Roland's flagship TD-50 module. The stock sounds are inspiring enough out of the box. And for power users, kits can be manipulated virtually in a number of ways. Kick drum too boxy for your tastes? Dry it out with muffling. Too boomy? Tune it up. Snare drums even feature adjustable snare wires so players can dial in their preferred sensitivity. Once you've got your core sounds covered, drums can be sweetened with room ambience, EQ, and more on a pad-by-pad basis.

Import and record over SD

The TD-17 allows users to import their own drum sounds via SC/HC card and save to any of 50 user kits. This is just one way in which the TD-17 grows with you. Drum performances can be recorded straight into the SD card (up to 60 minutes) for safekeeping and song building.

Stream songs and MIDI over Bluetooth

An onboard Bluetooth 4.2 transceiver gives the TD-17 the edge for practice and recording. Stream music directly to your module wirelessly, without cables, and play along to your heart's content. And when you're ready to capture those ideas, the TD-17 also features MIDI over Bluetooth to send MIDI note values out to a compatible device, including compatible smartphones.

Record audio and trigger virtual instruments

Onboard sounds aside, the TD-17 is the perfect tool for triggering your favorite virtual instruments onstage or in a recording environment. MIDI data can be sent via the TD-17's USB port or 5-pin MIDI output. Pre-mixed audio can also be sent via USB.

Additional trigger inputs grow with your kit

In addition to accepting the included multi-pin cable harness, the TD-17 sports two additional 1/4" dual-trigger inputs for an additional crash and auxiliary pad down the road.

Reviews

it’s a great module
probably only rivaled by the Alesis Strike module in its price range. i upgraded from a TD-1 and built a kit from scratch using the TD-17 module. I split several of my pads to add more cymbals and I could not be happier with the entire system. Easy to edit, fun to learn, and great to pick up and play.
TD-17 (TD-17KV)
I have the TD-6 years ago have a acoustic Tama. But wanted to get back to EDrums the TD-17 is a great module. Lotta customization features, sounds great. I stated getting a Alesis Command and upgrade to the TD17KV. Glad I had this set is awesome.

TD-17 for the win!
I was in the market for a module upgrade, coming from a Roland Td-4,hooked up to a Td-6v. I was just about certain I was going for a used TD-25 when I got onto a V-drums forum comparing the 2, and basically every module.(The Td-17&Td-25 seem to be very popular choices in the V-drums community, and both have solid supportive points.)
What seemed to scare me away from the TD-17 at first, is that it's marketed as an entry level/beginner module. I've been in the drum game for about 16 years or so, and am definitely far beyond the "beginner level" so to speak. Let me tell you, this thing rules. Besides the 50 presets (there's a couple pretty cool kits) is the magic.
There are 50 additional spaces to create your own kits.
Even cooler, you can load your own samples via SD card, and backup your saved kits/recordings.
That means if you want that kick sample from Superior Drummer 3 without running midi, or your own acoustic kick sampled, it's easily doable.
You can layer different sounds together, and mix to your liking.
Also has midi out for triggering Superior Drummer 3 and the like, USB so you can connect directly to your laptop (in place of your audio interface) and it's recognized in your DAW with ZERO latency!
Bluetooth makes jamming to YouTube, or whatever a breeze. Phones jack, 2 main outs, aux as well.
Some people complain about the pad's cables all being connected (except for crash 2 and an extra aux out) but it's not an issue for me. (Many modules have this design, including Td-25)
I just want to add how much better this module sounds than my previous TD-4 and TD-6v.
I still have the TD-6v hooked up to the Td-17 for expansion purposes.
All in all, for the price, features, and all around, TD-17 for the win.
Can't wait to use this for the next 10 years
I purchased this module to upgrade my first-ever kit (TD-1KV) I purchased secondhand, primarily for a plug-and-play solution without having to deal with a VST.

I was worried the module wouldn't make much of a difference, given the cymbals (3 that came with the kit + a Roland OP-TD1C) and rubber toms aren't exactly up to par with what the module can do. I was wrong. Even with the standard rubber heads and the simple cymbals, the sounds on-board the module are simply outstanding once you fiddle with the sensitivity/pad settings, which doesn't take too long. I can tell that upgrading to mesh heads will make this module feel and sound even more like a real set.

One thing to note, though, is that you'll need to account for the module's mounting hardware if you want to incorporate it into your setup. I am still in the process of finding the best solution for that, but it in no way diminishes the value of the product.

Bluetooth is great. Recording to SD card (along with any input backing tracks you are playing along to) is simple. And the level of customization in terms of muffling, tuning, and the overall sound is extensive but not overwhelming. A big thank you to Cameryn at Sweetwater who has helped me make my decision and given me the technical and logistical support I need every step of the way. If you can afford this module, and you plan to stick with drumming for a few years if not more, I cannot recommend it - and Sweetwater service - enough.

Great module
It's really hard to give this module any less than 5 stars as it is a really great module. Has everything you need in it, highly editable instruments, layers, sound sample imports, bluetooth mix in, etc. I am using with all standard Roland pads, PDX-8's, CY-8's, CY12's, CY-13R, and VH-11 - Everything works flawlessly.

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
