I've purchased FAR too many overdrive pedals in my time playing guitar. I've probably owned over 20 different overdrive and dual overdrive pedals looking for the perfect gain staging pedals. I have also owned a Strymon BlueSky and Flint for a while now and as a reverb lover those pedals are maybe some of the best ever. I avoided purchasing too many Strymon pedals to avoid the worship guitarist jokes. Even though there's nothing wrong with worship guitarists. I finally just purchased the Sunset and will now probably sell most of my other overdrive pedals. The Sunset sounds better, has more tonal options and stacks better for gain staging than any pedal or pedals I've played. I'm going to purchase a Riverside and those two pedals will be my overdrive/distortion section on my board. No one ever talks about the noise gate option in these pedals. It is so nice to have a pedal that sounds better totally than anything else and also gates itself… which no one ever mentions about the sunset or riverside from strymon. Consider me extremely happy with my purchase. Now I'm going to get on Reverb and make some money back selling off many of my other drive pedals.

I like a smooth creamy overdriven tone and this delivers. It is simular to my King of Tone. It stays on my pedalboard.

Mot only does this pedal sounds great and have two pedals in one, but the noise reduction is amazing. I have a couple P90 guitars and have tried several noise reduction pedals all of which had various significant problems. This noise reduction works well for noise but also does not cut off the initial string strike or kill your sustain. Great pedal.

Initially I really liked the pedal and it worked well with midi, but as soon as I took it to practice with my band and cranked the volume, I could hear the "digital" in the pedal at higher gain settings. Ended up returning it

I bought this product back in July. At first the product was good for half an hour then the pedals start dying off. I tried to run it by itself, and still pedal keep dying. I personally like the product and variety of tones it can make but im disappointed that it doesn't work.

As you can tell by the picture, I'm a big fan of Strymon pedals. I've only been using them for about 6 months so far. You can also see in the picture that I'm playing with a Fender Vintage 2 1963 Tele, through a 5E3 Tweed Deluxe amp. This amp is REALLY picky when it comes to pedals. I think I tried 3 reverb pedals and they were all very noisy through this amp. Once I tried the Flint reverb my search was over. Since then I've been adding more Strymons to my collection. The Sunset is the latest.

I've had the Sunset for about a week or so and I'm really enjoying it. The A side "Texas" setting is a very adjustable T-9 type of tone, really nice. But I'm really enjoying the B side "2 Stage" setting. It's kind of an Eric Johnson type singing tone if you play a certain way and a very usable classic rock overdrive that gives you all the sustain you need. It's very touch sensitive to pick attack, you can get very detailed with it and the Sunset responds with great tones.

I downloaded the manual and I know the two sides are designed to compliment each other, but so far I've been all about instant gratification! :>) I'm looking forward to getting into the details of this pedal. It's so nice so far, I imagine there's a lot more great tone in there.

IMO, it's another great Strymon pedal, well worth the investment!

I bought this pedal because my Analogman KoT dual overdrive pedal is not going to ship any time soon. I use one side for a little dirt rhythm setting and the other side as a lead tone with just a bit of volume boost. Both sides of this pedal have settings that can be dialed in to reach a wide range of desired tones.
The lead tone I quickly found has a tone on the edge of break-up reminiscent of an overdriven British amp. It is a tone that I can describe as glassy but glass that is in a molten state just barely holding its form.

With both single coils and humbuckers I am satisfied with this comparatively expensive pedal that requires significant mA power.

I am not sure what this peddle wants to be. I have had issues with it making noise and sometimes not working. It seems to work now but I took it out of my lineup fearing an electrical problem could harm my other peddles. I emailed Strymon and never heard back. I would like to return it because the tone control simply can't be fine tuned with one Tone (one for A and one for B) controller. As a result, it's hard to make it sound good. I use this with a Strymon Iridium Amp wish I LOVE and can't say enough good things about.

This pedal is amazing. What I like about this pedal is the right side 2Stage overdrive! This pedal is very quiet and I've found I can achieve a greater signal to noise ratio with this pedal. I am currently searching for a combination of other pedals to find that soft clipping into hard clipping the Sunset does to compare with original pedals the Sunset modeled them after. I am not utilizing the pedal to it's fullest because I am not using the other types of overdrive sounds, just he 2Stage. It is also a great pedal to get if you are not sure what to get but want the best. I can dial in just about any sound of any pedal I want with this think and it versatility is the clear winner!

This is awesome. It's got a ton of options that are all very different from each other. Anyone looking to expand their distortion options while keeping awesome sound should definitely consider this. I would recommend purchasing the additional/optional favorite switch to give yourself even more versatility - you can't go wrong.

I bought this pedal for a small grab-n-go pedalboard. I am still getting to know it, but all the reasons why I thought I wanted it were validated right out of the box. There are sounds galore to explore on this thing. The dials just dare you to keep tweaking. Subtle and satisfying. This pedal is really quite a perfect addition for my HX Stomp--plus some pedals--rig. This thing makes my Fenderesque tones sing beautifully, and the favorites switch, while a bit pricey for what it does, really makes this a seriously versatile pedal. I particularly dig the Klon and TS sounds on this, and find either one of them at all times on, at very low drives for my clean tone, as they really sweeten the tone. I think what makes this pedal so special is the range of tones you can conjure when you sweep the drive knobs on either side. For example: the "hard" circuit makes for a beautiful transparent boost sound down at 9 o'clock and lower, but the same knob on the same algorithm takes you into fuzz territory when you get up to 3 o'clock and higher. This kind of idea makes the pedal extremely useable to all players, and I feel like I could cover just about any tune with this pedal running straight into the front of my HX Stomp chain. One thing that makes this pedal personally so great is that I gig regularly as a guitarist AND as a bassist, and this pedal works really well on the bass. Not enough has been said about that on le Internet forums or videos. This pedal keeps the bottom end, and depending on the circuit, can even boost my low end. This makes it the perfect pedal for a guitarist and bassist (who can't make his mind up on which instrument is more fun to play) looking for a most versatile rig in just his pedalboard. Can't see this pedal ever leaving my board because all other overdrives are missing one feature or another that the Sunset includes.

I thought I was done getting more pedals, but I think I may have to get one of Strymon's other pedals (El Capistan) to throw into my FX loop because I can't speak highly enough of Strymon quality, when it comes to pedals. Shout out to Nick Church. While he did not help me with this transaction, he still deserves some serious praise for his ongoing helpfulness.

No need for other overdrives (beside maybe a fuzz pedal) when you've got this in yer arsenal! Lots of different tone options with the 6 different drive circuits. I mostly keep in on the germanium one that is said to be like a klon centaur But every setting sounds great with this thing especially with the + and - bright switch. Got rid of my EQD Palisades and am pretty darn happy with just this. You will be too!

The pedal looks like a strong build, although aluminum, which I've read in other reviews scratches easily.

Onto the sound: I own a Marshall DSL20CR with a 65W Creamback M. I'm playing with a Schecter C-1 loaded with 57/66 pickups, and I also use an TS9 TubeSceamer. There was not anything I really couldn't do with my Marshall's amp overdrive and TS9. If anything the Sunset didn't sound as full or deep, and I think this may be because it's digital.

I would recommend this if your playing through a VOX or another clean amp and you want some good overdrive. For those with a good overdriven amp like a Marshall, I wouldn't recommended. It has a very steep price tag. I also wasn't a fan that Strymon requires customers to pay for shipping. It doesn't come across customer minded, in that way.

I don't need any of my other overdrive pedals anymore, they are dead to me! Strymon, I love you and I'd like to take you out on a nice date and introduce you to my parents.

Talk about one pedal does all! This pedal is the bomb. The sonic possibilities are endless. I'm not an expert, but the tones I have worked with are like out of my dreams. I'm running it through my Morgan MVP23 amp and I am in heaven. The Sunset really brings out that tube vibe I love so much. I could get rid of almost all of my overdrive pedals because this one does it all. If you just want to buy one overdrive pedal, then this is the end all. I can't say enough about this product.

I recently purchased this pedal after listening to the demo video supplied by Sweetwater's excellent musicians. I like what it can do. You can set up 2 different sounding overdrives and fine tune each side to your liking. You can even set them in different orders so one will kick in then the other. I still like to use the switches. I set one for more of a Bluesy drive and the other drive a screaming lead. The other thing is that it fits on my pedal board with room to spare.

More excellence from the incredibly ingenious engineering of The Strymon Company. I use it to drive into the Strymon Iridium and just great. I love getting that sound of just breaking up the tubes of an amp and this combination nails it. Thank you Jason Koons!

This is a very nice pedal. No doubts and it has a lot of features. The noise gate that goes on when not in use is very clever and good for live performances(no hiss through the PA). This does cost... though and it should sound nice. But I don't know if its that much better than many pedals. Channel B is excellent, has a lot of heavy, smooth gain. Channel A is not so great. I find the overdrive a bit thin sounding. One of the modes duplicates a TS sound but falls flat in my opinion. it also has to boost settings, rather have another OD or distortion mode instead. I use A as boost into B, doesn't sound good to me the other direction
Again, very nice pedal and you do save a power source since its 2 in 1. But if you really like your OD pedals and your board is fine it just may not be worth the price. I have a TS808, OD3, and a germanium
RAT and I wasn't like "wow" this is so much nicer. Will keep it and see if it grows on me, if not its off to ebay.

I can"t believe what an awesome pedal this is. The tonal possibilities and combinations are basically endless. I almost would say I don"t need a single other drive pedal, but who doesn"t want more and more gear lol. This pedal can do anything you"re looking for. I even find that if set right, it can give you a high gain tone all on its own.

If you"re on the fence because of price (which was my only worry), don"t be. This is worth every penny it costs.

The Sunset is an extremely versatile OD pedal with lot's of must have features for the studio and performing guitarist. I was very impressed with the rich analog like tone this unit creates with DSP's and an analog front end. Between the 2 channels and all the settings independently and stacked, there is almost no OD / boost tone that you cannot get with this pedal. Add the fact that it has a studio quality noise gate and line buffer that is totally transparent and this is one amazing pedal. Midi presets and expression control are another must have bonus. Last but not least, this pedal stacks extremely well with the other OD pedals on my board...the A channel Treble boost sounds awesome with my JHS Andy Timmons signature OD pedal....and so quiet...no additional noise added to the circuit....this pedal is worth the money.

The Strymon Sunset pedal is my 4th from the company. I have distortion/over drive pedals from the very first Butler designed RealTube overdrive ( a real favorite by the way), a VooDoo Labs SparkleDrive, a Fulltone Drive2, and a Mad Professor Golden Cello. All of them have been retired to a shelf in my studio, replaced by the Sunset pedal. The Sunset with it's full feature set does what all those other pedals do ( although in all honesty it can't replicate the warmth of the Butler tube overdrive). But on a day to day basis when tracking parts needing a bit or, in some cases, a lot of "hair" on my signal, the Sunset fits the bill. I choose distortion/od tones to fit the song I am playing and often don't use any signal modification at all and just simply turn up my Fender Deluxe Reverb and get the tone from the 6V6's breaking up. But sometimes when you enjoy a piece of your favorite pie adding a little whipped cream can make it better....the Sunset pedal is my "whipped cream".

This is a fantastic pedal. Truly worth every penny.

I bought this as a birthday present to myself, because hey you only live once. I love this pedal and I can't get a bad sound from it. I let my friend borrow this pedal for a few days and he ended up with one a week later. Highly Recommended to anyone who wants a variety of tones in 1 pedal.

I don't use a lot of distortion most of the time. My rhythm sound is actually quite clean and I kick in a bit more drive for solos or certain songs that require this. This pedal shines for both of these types of sounds. Notably, a nice feature, is the built in Noise Gate feature which really helps with any hiss you may have from extra gain or pickups. I've used this in front of tube amps and higher end solid states (Quilter, Roland JC) and it sounds wonderful with both. Great pedal. Staying on my board!

I bought this on a whim and it"s remained on my board ever since. It is a phenomenal Of and it works exceptionally well as a main Distortion as well. I highly recommend this pedal! I don"t say it much with Strymon but this one is worth the price tag!

Let me start by saying, all my amps are tube amps. I run my dirt pedals into the clean channel. This is absolutely the last dirt pedal I will ever buy. I've had up to 8 dirt pedals on my board at one time. Pedals made by Wampler, Friedman, Mad Professor, JHS, Keeley, EHX. I thinned the herd down to the Sunset and 2 others. Any sound I've ever dreamed of can be found in this pedal only this pedal does those sounds even better than I had hoped for and it is so easy to find the tone I'm looking for. The fact that it has a great buffer built in, if you chose to use it, and, built in noise suppression, if you chose to use that, are bonuses! The controls are easy to use, It's nice having the ability to stack tones any way you chose, and I have not been able to find any settings that are not usable. This bad boy ROCKS!

Received my Strymon Sunset Pedal last week with hopes that this would finally be the one. I have spent $1000"s on overdrives ( I"m not exaggerating ) and there was always something missing that made me continue searching for that one. Well let me tell you FINALLY I FOUND IT! This thing is awesome!!!!!
I bought the Fav switch which I have set up on the bottom left corner of my board which is my lead tone I can access with ease anytime. I can dial in a sweet ryhtym Tone on A or B or both together and then step on Fav switch for my lead tone. I especially like it because you can step on Fav switch and it doesn"t stack on top of your current setting it switches. I can have it set up on A + B. Have one tone on A, one Tone on B, and one Tone on the Fav switch, and basically have 3 different overdrives in one. The A > B and B > A are really awesome too. A lot of pedals when you stack them for me they lose something. These stacked tones are like one awesome collective tone. Very usable.
The 6 different drive circuits ( 3 for A side and 3 for B side ) are very cool and makes this thing even more versatile. Last night I had my RC booster volume cranked and had the JFET dialed in on the B side for a really sweet off clean rythym tone that was pushing my green backs into this killer breakup and then I could step on the Fav switch for this viscous lead tone which would cut through the mix very nicely.
The Texas setting Is great, and the hard setting can get you into metal land as well. Really I have found all the settings useful. I play Blues all the way to Black Sabbath and this thing can get you into all realms or styles.
This is my first review I have ever taken the time to do. Thank you to Strymon for making an amazing Pedal and thank you to Sweetwater for your outstanding customer service.

I have fooled around a bit with some pedals. Because I never got a quality sound. I would just play around with them and occasionally feel like I found something useful. First it was the El Capistan, then the Ola, next was the Blue Sky and then the Sunset. All I can say is wow, wow, wow, wow and then the Strymon power supply which equalled another wow. Here is my simple and humble advice, don't buy another pedal until you own all the Strymon's.

Been keeping up with Strymon products for some time and have had my eye on the Timeline and Blue Sky/Big Sky - decided to try the Sunset as while I have used a Fulldrive 2 for 15 years, I keep trying pedals that might add a semi-Marshall tone to the board...gave this a good test in the last 3 few weeks but returned it - Out of all 6 options, I only liked 1 - the Texas setting on Ch A but did not need the germanium and clean settings as I have those dialed in already - same for Ch B - FET and double stacked OD's were not what I had hoped for and the main OD setting while better at higher volume, sounded way too compressed and mid rangy... For me the Fulldrive has still been the best pedal in this and other comparisons as it has more clarity and "sings" better - an FD2 creates a smooth OD with good high end whereas both the Sunset options sounded muffled instead of ringing out...this pedal might sound better at high volumes but I don't play that loud - will still keep Strymon in mind for Rev and Delay in the future

The varied options of overdrives and combinations makes this like having 3 drives in one without ever having to touch a setting. I needed something like this for playing cover music.I also purchased the favorite switch which gives me another setting at my feet.

I’ve been looking for the architecture of this pedal for years. Some Wamplers came close but the sound wasn’t right. THIS is my dream come true OD. Truly independent channels but both with a wide array of sounds....and then a variety of ways to combine them. And the sound quality is outstanding. I can perfectly mimic both my OCD and my Xotic SL if I want to, but with so much more flexibility. I predict this pedal will become as ubiquitous as an H9, on boards everywhere.

For some reason all the video demos I found (including SW) really suck. They don’t begin to show what this pedal can do. When I get a chance I’ll make one.

I am more impressed as I go along with Strymon gear. I started with the Big Sky, then a Riverside... now a Sunset. All of their gear is top notch and this is no different. Lots of tonal options - luscious. Quite intuitive to learn as well. The ability to use each side separately or together is cool. To put sides A and B together three selections are provided - A into B; B into A: or A & B in parallel.

The only downside is the selector switches on the back are even with the case so it's hard to change the selection- especially if the Sunset is on a pedal board. They should stick out just a bit so they can be more easily handled. Otherwise - great overdrive! Great tutorials on their website as well. Pete Celi does a wonderful job demonstrating what these pedals are capable of.

I've been using the Strymon Sunset now for a couple of months. It had replaced my previous setup which was a Tubescreamer mini & Fulltone OCD.

Firstly the flexibilty of this pedal is incredible. The ability to change and stack the different overdrive circuits in any way you choose is easy & highly practical. I've experimented over the weeks with using the Treble feeding into 2 stage for classic rock tones and also JFET boost into Texas for John Mayer/SRV style tones + other configurations.

The added features such as an adjustable noise gate + using an external favourite switch are also very useful. I found the gate perfect for higher gain sounds with single coil pickups.

Sonically, I'd say all of the sounds are very good but comparing to the real thing that each circuit emulates such as an OCD, Klon or Tubescreamer i'd say there is a slight compromise. They can be 95% of the way there but considering the flexibilty you are getting with one pedal, to me it was worth the change.

Essentially 9 pedals with many other combinations within the 9. Well worth the price. Highly recommended! This and a Strymon delay is ALL you need to gig!

Such an awesome pedal. One channel for slight overdrive and one for heavy distortion. You can use both in parallel or channel A into B or channel B into A in series. One set up can get you 3 tones. There are so many different combinations of tones, the possibilities seem endless. A must for all guitar players' pedalboards.

Very nice with tons of options. If this were the only overdrive on your board it would still covers all of your needs. Small complaint is how easy the aluminum scratches.

This pedal really kicks like a mule.

I have it going straight into a Blues Junior and the moment I engage it, out comes this gorgeously, clear lead sound that just cuts through everything. It sings without being harsh or muddy and the quality is so good, it's truly inspiring.

I have been only using it for a week and admit I have not explored every possibility available, but I just KNOW that no matter which setting I dial in, the quality is going to be there.

The Sunset comes with a basic idiot-sheet for setting up different overdrives with different tonal characteristics and I strongly advise new users to go through them - it's a great way to hear what this pedal can do.

Don't screw around with wheezy cheapo pedals - get the real deal. It's really is worth it !!

This pedal is everything I've ever wanted. It gives me so much versatility with how my guitar cuts through when performing live. Having a six piece band this is important and until now I couldn't get that crunch without losing quality of tone. I play a les Paul recording to A-B-Y switch (for lap steel and electric guitar) then to the Strymon Sunset, to Way Huge Aquapuss, to Strymon El Capistan and out to a 73 twin reverb with vibrato and reverb switch separate. I had a Fuzzface before and I thought it was fine until I got the sunset. I have either side dialed in to where I get that solid overdrive on the left and the tone is unbelievable. It truly shines according to hard I am playing which is ideal for me with the left side on geranium. The right side has way more distortion but I'm not losing any of my dry signal which is why this thing is great. When I have both sides on it just allows for so much especially going through delay and tape echo. This pedal is worth every penny and more. And Dante was the best service rep I've ever met(over the phone). Seriously great dude

This pedal is amazing. I use it in front of my BlackStar. I love the versatility. I would recommend this pedal to any guitar player.

I was incredibly hyped for the Riverside... I did not like it, nothing wrong with it, it truly sounds like an amp, but I prefer the pedal saturation and compression... some may call this blasphemy. Just me.
But the Sunset actually sounds like drive pedals, my favorite being the Germanium mode, and blending it with the jfet.
But honestly, I got this after getting the Chase Bliss brothers so it's almost the same deal, but the Brothers sound ten times better, and you get a little bit more of control and flexibility when creating a complex mix between the two channels.
Still, a great product from Steymon, I wouldn't go as far as saying that they have missed the mark in the past years, but I thibk they need to come out with a grounbreaking or just an amazing pedal alas timeline or bigsky... I'm starting to get used to mediocre releases that are high quality, the price reflects that, obvioulsy, but they are not my top choice anymore.
Chase bliss makes better pedals, Thorpy makes better drives, and so on... I'm the kind of pedal junky that buys all the significant pedals... but I think I will sell my Riverside and Sunset, I don't see myself using them over my current drives on my board.
But if you don't have a lot of pedals and want something that can create a lot of different tones, easily.
Then this or the Riverside (depending on what you are looking for) should work nicely.

But to me, this nor the Riverside are 5 star products. But good first efforts into the full blown drive tones.

I have a fulltone fulldrive mosfet 2 and a ibanez tube king tk999ht on my pedalboard.
With the sunset pedal i can get all of the tones i get with these 2 pedals but better quality!

Sounds awesome and very good.
Havent tried all the staking though but now its already awesome!

I was in the market for a new overdrive pedal. I wanted a dual overdrive. I first got a JHS Double Barrel. Nice pedal, but not enough distortion. Then I got the Wampler Dual Fusion. Not a bad pedal, but I didn't care for the tones I was getting. Then I decided to go with the Strymon Sunset, a brand new pedal from the company and I think this is the one.

Both channels come with a clean boost setting ("Treble" on channel A and "JFET" for B. They are nice channels and you won't get any drive out of the drive knobs from turning them. "Texas" (Channel A) is nice and bumps your mids. The Ge setting sounds about the same but without the mid bump.

I use the "Hard" setting mostly for Channel B. It sounds kinda fuzzy, similar to the dirty channel on my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III. I haven't messed with the "2stage" setting much and can't recall what it sounds like. And as I mentioned above, the "JFET" setting is a clean boost.

Another interesting thing about this pedal is it comes with an expression jack. With an expression pedal, you can use it as a boost as well. You can set what the pedal sounds like when it is at the heel and toe position. Increasing the drive also increases the volume so it acts like a boost as well. You can use the XP as a volume pedal instead of an XP.

Last minute mentions: This pedal comes with stacking abilities, noise/hum cancelling abilities, and it isn't huge so it won't take up much space.

There are so many great things I could say about this pedal that there isn't enough room for them all. So, I will simply say - GO BUY IT !

With all of the options available to the user I believe it delivers superior flexibility and tone from virtually anything else currently in the market.

I only have 2 thumbs - but they are both up to Strymon for creating the Sunset !

I've been playing for over 40 years, and in that time I've tried quite a few overdrives, including many of the usual suspects, as well as some boutique, hand-built one-off OD pedals. Many of them have been good, even great. But except for a certain green one none of them has survived long on my pedal board. And the certain green one does what it does really well but lacks versatility, so generally speaking there have been one or two other ODs on my board to expand the sonic palette. Overall, I have been unable to find a truly satisfying solution.

I've owned a few Strymon pedals and have been impressed with their build quality and the sound. So when this dual overdrive came out I wondered if it could be a solution. I ordered one from Sweetwater on the first day it was available, and it arrived a couple of days later (yes, that's positive plug for Sweetwater). I've used it for a couple of days now, about three hours playing time. Usually I don't like to review until I've had something for a few months, but based on my experience with it so far I feel pretty confident when I say:

This thing rocks.

Here's what I particularly love about it: versatility. There is such a wide range of sounds you can dial in with this. And they all sound good. I'm not going to try to describe them here, or how it works. That's for you to discover. It feels like the Sunset has released me from the OD box I've been confined in. Now the notes and chords I play can escape that box. I predict that this pedal will become Strymon's biggest hit (which is saying a lot) and that it will become a standard on pedalboards everywhere (displacing many a "certain green"unit and bunch of other as well). May sonic beauty reign! And where it does, the Sunset will likely be part of the picture.
