Better luck, third time..

By Liselotte F.
Music Background: Flute and guitar in school, but longed for a synth. Now I've one; The One!!

It all began with the Casio VL-1, then the Yamaha DX 100 and now the Moog Sub 37 TE.
Without any doubt, my best synth!! I'm still learning, and loves modulation!!

Sticky mod and pitch wheels after warranty

By WJ

The mod and pitch wheels become sticky outside of warranty. They look like they are made of tar. You can try to "fix" it with rubbing alcohol but this is a temporary measure. The fix still leaves them somewhat sticky. It's frankly gross and distracting.

As far as I know, Moog does not have replacement parts -- and when they get parts they do not intend to supply them for free.

Also, the keys yellow after just a few years.

This is extremely disappointing! They should be standing behind their products.

Powerhouse Synth

By Wezley from Rockford, IL
Music Background: Producer, Songwriter, Artist, Content Creator, Director

I recently added the Moog Subsequent 37 to my studio setup, and it has quickly become one of my favorite instruments. If you're a fan of analog synthesis or just looking for a powerhouse synth that can deliver everything from fat basslines to soaring leads, this is the one.

Build Quality and Design:
Right out of the box, you can tell that the Subsequent 37 is built to last. The aluminum chassis and wooden side panels give it that classic Moog vibe, while the 37-note keybed feels solid and responsive under your fingers. The layout is super intuitive—every control is right where you'd expect it to be, making sound design a breeze.

Sound Quality:
The sound of this synth is nothing short of amazing. The dual oscillators and Moog's legendary ladder filter combine to produce that warm, rich tone that Moog is famous for. Whether I'm dialing in deep, punchy basses or creating lush, evolving pads, the Subsequent 37 delivers with clarity and character. The improved headroom in the mixer section really shines when you're layering sounds—it stays clean and punchy even when you push it hard.

Features:
One of my favorite things about the Subsequent 37 is how versatile it is. The modulation options are incredible—you can route pretty much anything to anywhere, which opens up a lot of creative possibilities. The built-in arpeggiator and step sequencer are easy to use and super handy for coming up with new ideas. Plus, with 256 preset slots, I can save and recall my favorite sounds in an instant, which is perfect for live performances.

Overall:
The Moog Subsequent 37 is a dream come true for anyone serious about their synths. It's got that classic Moog sound but with all the modern features you could want. Whether you're new to synthesis or a seasoned pro, this synth is sure to inspire. I can't recommend it enough! Special shoutout to my sales rep Henry Moore for making this happen at a great price.

An amazingly powerful audio tool

By Jade B. from San Francisco, CA

When I first ordered the Subsequent 37 I was unsure of it being a paraphonic/monophonic instrument but after having it just a week I find it far more usable then my 16 note polyphony synth especially the modulation and sequencing. It's nice and fat too with the window shaking lows and ear piercing highs.

Ignore Spec Sheet

By Mark S. from HERSHEY, PA

Haunted by the sound my whole life. Pulled trigger on this and felt a little crazy because I was clueless about this world. A year later and the Moog is happily retired by my piano in my living room in a place of honor. When I do things outside I used other tools as the Moog isn't as flexible as my other stuff.

Hard to explain how something with so little function can make me so happy.

If you are going to do a logical comparison and get the most bang for your buck the virtual synths are a better value. Turn that cutoff knob and you won't care. This is an instrument not a computer.

Still discovering after 2 1/2 years

By Andrew C. from Lansing MI

I'm glad I bought it; so many plusses including: 1. Many genres of downloadable sounds. 2. Sync'd presets with Strymon Nightsky (or other effects with MIDI ) 3. Can use aftertouch to control modulation, and can assign modulation to many things. 4. A great midi controller. 5. Aggressive sounds. 6. A lot better build quality than the Grandmother
Hear it in use 2-4 min in the video
Recommend the molded plastic case if it's still being sold. Would get 5 stars if it was polyphonic.

If you were to only pick one synth, I'm not sure this will cover all the ground you want, but if you want an synth with the classic moog sound for leads and basses, this is great.

My first Moog and not what I expected

By Sweetwater Customer

So I have about 25 or so synths. I have Prophets, Virus, Nord's, and Novation summit, and more. I must say I got pulled into the "you gotta have a moog, nothing sounds like it " argument and so I bought one. It's physically beautiful. No arguing that. I love the amber lights as well. The sound…..well it's nothing that my Rev2 or Pro3 can't do. In fact the sound palette is so limited you're stuck to using this for basslines. That's all it can really do. It's hard to work it into tracks and I don't see a reason that anyone would even own this. My summit or rev2 can make thunderous basslines too and anything else too. I'd say unless you want a one trick pony, skip it.

Oh my!

By Richie from PA
Music Background: Musician studio owner.

I have been eyeing this monologue synthesizer for a very long time. When I say long time, I'm talking about a few years since its return. That said, I love this piece of gear more than any keyboard in my studio. Just the few hours that I've been playing with it it, seems like 10 minutes went by when, 3 1/2 hours actually went by! I plan on extending that for another eight hours. That's how addictive. I think that about describes everything about this beauty of a beast by the way I smile! I have many other synths in my studio that twice the amount of this, but man, for less than a couple of thousand dollars you get a Heaven scent of Phat, large, sound.

Amazing Synth!

By Sweetwater Customer

I have A LOT of soft synths and a Kronos - this beats them all in enjoyability. The sound and response you get from this is second to none. It feels and sounds like you are playing a real live instrument - not a keyboard. However, you will eventually need an effects unit to really make is shine (e.g., chorus pedal and/or reverb).

Great for melodic work and sound design

By Jim

This is a great machine. It's very easy to get beefy over-driven leads as well as long sweeping modulations in a pretty intuitive way. I've been experimenting a lot with the mod source button and have had many 'so that's how they did that' moments discovering new sounds. The Wye Oak and Cory Henry videos with the product description give accurate and accessible guides to the Subsequent 37's live performance capabilities. I've been playing it for hours every day and like it more as I go. Superb.

There's a reason it gets called the GOAT

By Walter D. from Glendale, AZ
Music Background: Studio engineer, composer, arranger, musician.

Don't let my beloved Prophet Rev2 (or the rest of my synths, for that matter) read this review…! And yes, let me first point out that this certainly has NOT and will NOT replace any analogue polys or anything else in the rig. But….

The main difference between this and e.g the Prophet is that, although the Prophet sounds effortlessly superb, the '37 has an immediacy and presence that – yes, I'm going to play the snob card – you really only can get with (OMG I can't believe I'm stooping to this level) Moog circuitry like this (though, in fairness, c.f: my review on Sweetwater of my latest Juno-X acquisition!).

Let me give a little theoretical background from whence I come. I love acoustic instruments and listening to them being performed by talented folks. A Moog is like a Guarneri violin. A Sequential like a Stradivarius. Neither is better, each can sound awful in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to treat the instrument, but there's no mistaking that signature when player and instrument are in union. That's not to say digital instruments can't be included here, but then it just starts to get really complicated!

Anyway, my lovely little Guarneri here SOUNDS like a living, breathing instrument. One has to applaud (the late, great) Bob Moog (of blessed memory) who, like (the late, great) Dave Smith (of blessed memory) decided that the world really could use a monophonic, VC-driven, digital effect-less synth well into the first quarter of the 21st-Century! We haven't seen those kinds o' cajones since Mel Funn!

Does it sounds great? No! Not all the time. Is it a powerhouse creation station? Not even close! Except, of course, when things line up just so, which they do with this thing…. For my needs and my rig, this was definitely a "when the time//budget" allows kind of purchase. Will I ever use it on a track? Probably, but probably not without subjecting it to the same mixing process as an acoustic instrument, maybe moreso. Will I continue having an absolute ball with it, seeing what happens if I route this to that? Absolutely! And generating whole new ideas in the process!

No, it's not a creation station like an arranger or workstation synth is, but oh yes it has mojo to spare and doesn't care where you use it!

It’s ALIVE

By John from Saint Paul MN
Music Background: Engineer/ Producer/ Geek

Seriously, the thing sounds like it's a living , breathing thing. Not taking anything away from soft synths, but having the Subsequent 37 Moog , or any real Moog changes the way I create. For the same reasons a person might pick up an acoustic guitar to write a song , the same reasons apply to this thing. It's instantly interesting, and instantly can instantly inspire a great workflow.
There's a depth that Moog has that just isn't there on software.

Moog Subsequent 37

By James F.
Music Background: Pianist, Organist, Keyboardist, Composer, Arranger, MIDI Sequencer. Classical, Jazz, Pop Rock, Latin music, over 35 years professional

This is the best synthesizer I have ever known or used! The sounds are pliable, but ready cand easy to manipulate! I have been using this on shows lately and receives so many responses from musicians and audiences these past weeks! I can't wait to use it again!

Amazing sounding and way deeper than it seems.

By Luis N. from Los Angeles

I always loved the sound of this Moog. I tried it at a friend's house for a bit and loved it. What I didn't expect is to be so amazing for sound design. Just look at how flexible the envelopes are, you can sync, loop and latch them to create sort of complex LFO's with them. The Modulation section is incredible, with almost anything you can see on the panel as modulation destinations, including buttons! Very smart design, every time I play with this synth, it brings a smile to my face. It's one of those synths that you really connect with, that feels like a proper instrument. After having tried many, many monophonic analog synths, this one and the Pro 3 are my favorites. Highly recommended!

Its OK

By Mats from Australia

I have owned this and the Moog Little Phatty when it first came out for a number of years, but ended up selling both. They are good analogue synthesizers that offer plenty for more users, but in my opinion they sound far more thin and squeeky than its bigger brother: the Moog Voyager, which isn't really surprising. This synth will do the job for most, but for me it never delivered that round, thick, warms synth sound I hear in the Voyagers, retro synths, especially Prophet synthesizers.

Why Subsequent 37?

By Phil H. from Texas
Music Background: Performing and recording for 32 years.

In world overflowing with analog monosynths, why the Moog Subsequent 37? Well... the sound and build quality, obviously. But there are many great sounding analog monos. (Or, yes, duophonic as well) So why this one?

In my opinion what sets the Subsequent 37 apart is the amount of thought that has gone into the user interface. Many functions that are buried on other synths are available right there on the panel. Note priority, how legato and retrig react, what type of glide you are using, etc. Changing these often involves a menu dive on many other synths or, on cheaper models, you just have to learn how the synth behaves and accept that. On the Sub 37 it's all right there on the panel and easily altered with a button click. The speed with which you can get a patch behaving exactly as you want is amazing. That's particularly important in mono patches like leads and basses.

The sound is fantastic, and that's what you'll hear about in most reviews. The Fatar keyboard is excellent. I mean, it's a Moog. But the ability to so quickly and efficiently craft every aspect of that sound is what makes this one of the best live (and fastest studio) synths around in my opinion.

Yeah, It’s Not A Minimoog

By Kent M. from SAN ANTONIO, TX
Music Background: I write, shoot (photos), and make noise.

Yep, it doesn't sound like the Mini, the Grandmother, or the Matriarch. That's what you'll hear when you research this synth on the net.

The Grandmother and Matriarch are great synths. I owned both. If you want vintage, they are great options.

But what if you don't want to sound like 1974?

Then there's the Moog Subsequent because the internet hive mind believes that the Subsequent is a "modern-sounding synth."

I believe that the Subsequent draws from the legacy of the early Moog modulars, but updates that tech and places it in a front-panel synth. Like all things Moog, it builds on the past.

The key to using this synth effectively is using the overdrive responsibly, and there will be times when you will not want any overdrive at all. With great power comes great responsibility.

Some people complain that the Subsequent 37 is "too dark." It can sound dark especially when paired with pedals that roll off the higher frequencies. I pair this with a Strymon DIG, and they work beautifully together. Careful use of key tracking, post filter overdrive, and envelope velocity mod can help mitigate some of this criticism.

Features like beat frequency, VCO trigger, and LFOs with swing allow you to create patches with subtle nuances.

The range of the filter slopes is brilliant. You can use the 12 db slope for duophonic pads and textures. The 6 db filter is absolutely gnarly. You might not think you'll use these additional filter slopes, but until you try them, you have no idea what you're missing.

This synth can sound sweet, beautiful, angry, and downright ferocious.

You can modulate pretty much anything, and envelope looping and attack curves open up a lot of possibilities. Additionally, the FET circuit adds a late 60s or early 70s vibe to your patches depending on how you use it.

The CV inputs on the 37 can be routed to many places allowing you to use other synths or modular gear with the 37. Just make certain to check your voltages to ensure everything works well.

And the sequencer is excellent.

Yes, there are some features still tucked away in the Moog software, but these features are granular.

When compared to both the Grandmother and the Matriarch, the fit and finish is far superior. The filter cutoff knobs on the Matriarch and Grandmother are pitiful especially when compared to those on the Subsequent 37 and 25. And the wooden cheeks and case design on the Subsequent are to my eye, more beautiful.

If you want a dynamic Moog with a great sound and a dizzying array of features, the 37 is a great option.

Haven't we enough vintage-sounding synths? My problem with the Grandmother and Matriarch is that they sound like a bygone era. It was all rainbows and hearts at first, but it got stale after awhile.

Is the 37 perfect? No.

The screen is an eyesore. Moog should have used a negative screen with white text; it doesn't fit the aesthetic at all, and it's awful in low light. The menus also smack of 1994 (there's your nod to "vintage" if you love that sort of thing).

The CV could be more dynamic and versatile like the CV on the Minitaur. And there is no cross modulating the VCOs.

Cost may be an issue for some considering it's a paraphonic monosyth.

The 37 has its shortcomings, but compared to everything Moog got right on the synth, I wouldn't consider those shortcomings a reason not to consider this synth.

My advice is to play it in person if you can. You have to experience how the filter slopes, feedback, mixer, and post-filter overdrive change the sound. After that make your decision.

If you want "that vintage sound," then the 37 isn't for you. If you believe that music didn't end in the 1970s and want to join the rest of us in the 21st Century, by all means give this synth a chance.

It is a magnificent machine.

It's a Moog!

By Charles B. from Orlando, FL
Music Background: Jazz Pianist and keyboardist, Music writer and producer.

There is a reason why this is the Cory Henry's favorite synth! It sounds amazing! I own many synths but this one is my favorite. It has a punch that you can only feel it when you play it, it's not the same to hear it in tutorials. The key bead it's outstanding and the controls feel sturdy and top notch quality!

Great sound but ....

By Allan

Killer sound but the menu diving really annoys. Such a bizarre set of up and down over and sideways arrow- pointing that it's really a downer. Then there's no tempo readout. I ended up switching to the "Sequential Pro 3" and what a difference in experience. So easy and logical. Not frustrating at all and 3 oscillators too. MOOG comes up with great stuff and the sound is amazing but there's always something that seems quirky and laborious. Not meant to be a downer of the company but that's my experience

Unbelievable

By Brandon G. from Jensen Beach, FL

I ended up with this over the Pro 3 after much deliberation. There is just a quality to its tone that made me choose it over the Pro 3, even though it's older and more limited.

However, never in my life have I experienced such a wonderful, mostly intuitive tool that basically just gets out of the way.

That's the best I can describe this synth. It is so perfect in tone, build quality and features, that it's barely there. It just gets out of the way, and it leaves me alone with my own sound design, a nearly "acoustic/organic" electronic sound, and creativity.

I have much to say about this synth but I feel saying little is even more sufficient at displaying how much I love it. Buy them while they're here.

AWESOME SYNTH !!!

By Jim from Oregon
Music Background: Multi instrumentalist for over 50 years. Recording enthusiast and songwriter.

Ever since the early 70's, I was a ig fan of artists such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer and The Edgar Winter Group. And both of those bands introduced me to the Moog synthesizer. Man, I was in awe of the sounds that they created with those instruments, which led me to looking into it more closely. I've had synths in the past, but none have compared to the ones that Robert Moog designed. I recently took the plunge and bought the Subsequent 37 to expand my musical creativity and I'm glad I did. I conducer this little gem to be an empty canvas that is just itching for someone to paint their masterpiece on. The sound possibilities are endless and I can literally play with it for hours and want more. I was also quite impressed with the fine people over at the Moog factory for almost making me a part of their family. I thank them for their dedication to keeping Robert Moog's ideas and inventions alive and well. And best of all, the people at Sweetwater are also a good information source. I'm pretty darned happy with my purchase.

A modern classic

By Andrew H. from New England
Music Background: Drummer and synth player in bands in Sheffield, England in the ‘90’s and now an amateur enthusiast in New England

The Subsequent 37 is a joy to play, beautifully built and sounds amazing.

It's the highest build quality of anything my I own.

It sits in my studio alongside a Matriarch and Pro 3 SE and runs through a lovely Empress reverb and a little chorus to add some stereo width.

Creamy smooth or gorgeously overdriven, it can cut through any mix.

I will have it forever. It's a keeper.

Classic Moog sound, easy programming.

OK, so not as many Oscillators as a Matriarch, or Mini, but you can still get that classic Moog sound with almost knob per function programming and program memory. However you are paying a premium for the Moog name and sound.

Better than I expected it!

By Erich from San francisco
Music Background: Self trained

I wanted a Moog for years, so the expectations were high already, but I've been having a lot of fun with the Subsequent 37, it is an enjoyable machine at all levels from the quality of the overall product (Keys, Knobs, materials...) to the beauty of the sounds, Though it is a Hogg and you are supposed to generate your own sounds, I love the fact that the presets give you a great start, It is for sure an addictive Keyboard and I really recommend it!
Tyler from Sweetwater helped me getting some patches created by Daniel Fischer which I saw on their demo video, the overall experience to get my first Moog has been perfect so far.

So Much Fun...

By Robinson C. from Boise, ID
Music Background: Lifelong musician, since age 5.... producer/composer, creative director...

This is the single most accessible, programmable and enjoyable hardware synth I've ever played or owned... it has that fat, squishy, biting, ladder-filter-driven Moog goodness, and is just so incredibly playable. It's the first thing I reach for in the studio every morning... and I'm a guitarist! :D (OK in fairness, I'm a 'multi-instrumentalist' now, but once upon a time, my guitar was always up first... now, that Moog and her siren song drag me laughing into her arms...:))

I have a DSI Prophet REV2 as well, which itself is a monster, but out of the gate not as straight-up easy and fun to just tweak and explore. That's a more complex synth (polyphonic, etc.), and has quite a bit more learning curve. Together though, with that pairing you can hardly go wrong.

Two very minor things kept the Subsequent from a full 5 stars:

1. For whatever reason, the ARP rate flashing LED is super bright, and the LED brightness adjustment in the (included!) editor/librarian adjusts and dims all the other LEDs, but not for the ARP light. So as soon as the room lights dim a bit, that LED can be pretty blinding. If you don't know your way around the front panel, it can make things a bit harder to read for sure...

2. The keyboard is nice, fast, and responsive, but a bit "clattery". Much improved over the original Sub37, but could still do with a bit more damping...

But as I said, super minor issues, and not remotely deal breakers. If you are looking for an expressive, easy to learn, and dare I say it, *magnificent* paraphonic analog synth, you can hardly go wrong with this one....

Oh, and as a bonus, after purchase, you'll have access to an amazing set of patches from Daniel Fisher... a sweet bonus!

If you need one - but it from Sweetwater for the support and warranty. Many defects but great sound.

By Jon

Pros: It sounds fantastic. It looks really nice with the wonderful lines, wood panels, and orange LED's. The rotary octave knobs are from the era where Moog used better components (the newer ones have issues where they jump up to the highest pitch while you turn this control). Beat frequency is fantastic. Very easy to assign modulation with two wonderful LFO's. You can save patches and the software editor (also from a better era for Moog) is fantastic. Why did Moog stop making software editors? This is a great feature!

Cons: I've gone through 3 of these. The first one had issues because the internal boards were connected with soldered ribbon cables. Moog recently fixed this by making the ribbon cables with connectors. The second one I received had a warped casing. The entire bottom steel panel was warped in such a way that the entire instrument was essentially twisted. The key bed feels and looks really cheap. The keys turn yellow. The keys on these always look crooked. The key-bed feels very plasticky, springy in a bad way, and not smooth like the Fatar key-beds they used on Voyager, Grandmother, and Matriarch.

The biggest issue with this instrument is that the sync/SEQ/ARP engine is very poorly implemented. There is no BPM display, and the BPM printed on the overlay is inaccurate. Sync'ing to DAW's constantly fails. If you get it to work, it begins to drift after only a few beats. Most of the time, sync doesn't even work. Tap tempo is false advertisement since it does not actually work. You can "tap" the tempo, but it will always be wrong. For comparison, I have a Matriarch and the tap tempo and sync works as advertised (except for LFO sync to main clock).

So in short, the sound is great, the switches are better quality than the new Moog instruments, and besides the cheap crooked/yellow key bed - the instrument looks super cool. Moog seems to have taken a lot of short cuts with the internals, and hopefully, the second rev fixes all the issues with the ARP/SEQ/clock.

Moog Subsequent 37

By Jordan from Eau Claire Wisconsin

I purchased this with high expectations, and it more than delivered. Explosive dirty sounds, crystal clear clean sounds. It does everything I could have asked for and the work flow is well thought out. The added headroom makes a huge difference. This is an instant classic. To add to all of it the build quality is pristine. No cheap parts on the whole synth. It feels like you could drop it off a cliff and immediately continue to synthesis a soaring arpeggio to capture the feeling of flight upon picking it out of the crater left from impact. Also the filter makes me sing sweet lullabies to my friends and family. Do not make the mistake of not checking out this analog monster.

Not only is the synth fantastic, but the customer service was the greatest interaction with a large scale company I've ever had.

Amazing synth, once it worked

By Mike from White Plains, New York
Music Background: Long time hobbyist

I'm on my third subsequent 37, the first two I had to return due to not working aftertouch and a broken arpeggiator.

That being said now that I have one that works correctly, this is my favorite synthesizer. The tonal quality is next level and the software integration is excellent. I deducted a star because it took a while of back and forth to get one that was working properly.

Testament to sweetwater that they advance shipped me replacements both times with no hassle, and only a short video detailing the problem. I'll most definitely be buying more equipment from sweetwater due to the great customer service.

Yep it's a Moog

By Jungle E. from Hawaii
Music Background: Psy noodles

Amazing. This thing makes all my other gear sound second rate. No, it doesn't really have that "howl" which people may associate with the Minimoog, and I was admittedly a little disappointed by that. For maybe like 15 minutes. After I started digging in a bit however, I was completely hooked and now I can't even imagine making a track without it. Slinky, sultry, gooey moogy goodness for days. Yes the filter also sounds amazing. Not much I can say that others haven't. One of the best musical purchases I have ever made. Big thanks to the people in Ashville for keeping the vibe alive! Yum.

my god what a drug

By Ted S. from Chapel Hill, NC
Music Background: synth player (30 years)

I have owned (and played) so many synthesizers, analog, modular, digital... I have lost count. This one is the best I've played. The added headroom for the mixer may seem like an archane technical detail, but it makes a big difference. With a delay or reverb, the Subsequent 37 comes to life in a deeply satisfying way. FWIW, I am a big fan of Harmonia and Krautrock in general.
The integration with the editor app is excellent, almost flawless.

Great Moog Synth: Read my pros/cons, though

By Zach from Nashville
Music Background: Producer/Songwriter

** Pros:
*Build quality is like military grade.
*Very deep sound design tool
*The amazing sound you"d expect from a Moog.
*Feels like a real instrument
*Duo mode is cool when paired with sequencer. It has a very jumpy nature with you play 2 notes manually. The 2nd note will always go back to the first note when released. You can get creative with it, though. The drone mode in duo is fun as well. Almost always just feels like a tease to me "don"t you wish I was actually polyphonic?"
*Makes a really amazing MIDI controller. Especially for other software synths. Pretty much every knob you would want to control on a software synth has a corresponding hardware button on the subsequent 37 that you can map to it. That is, if you can get used to the extra firm key action.
*The pitch bend and mod wheels are the best feeling I"ve ever played on. The rubber makes them very grippy which is exactly what I want for a quick flick of the pitch bend. The orange back-lighting is a nice touch too.
*Most of the subtleties of a mono-synth have a knob or button on the front-panel. Glide-type, oscillator key sync, LFO retrigger, filter envelope velocity sensitivity, amp envelope sensitivity, beat frequency, etc.
*The pink noise in the mixer is to die for. That seems like an odd compliment, but it"s truly an analogue pink noise and it"s lush. This makes for amazing analog percussion sounds. Also the digital noise LFO is very useful for adding grit to other parameters. I kind of wish it was it"s own modulation bus so I didn"t lose an LFO when using the noise LFO.
*The envelopes are the most feature filled I"ve ever seen. Looping, tempo syncing, a delay and hold phase. I broke down a preset and couldn"t figure out what the rhythmic element was coming from. I turned off the sequencer/arpeggiator, all modulation was off and I finally realized it was the synced/looping envelopes. It then dawned on me how much power I had with them.
*The high frequency modes of the LFOs is very useful. You can get very FM sounding effects. Especially with having one LFO sweep the other one"s rate.
*The pole options on the filter open up a plethora of sound design options and the 6 db with a resonant filter sweep is reminiscent of a band pass filter.
*The editor librarian is absolutely fantastic. Thank you, Moog.
*I appreciate that each Mod bus has dedicated pitch and filter destinations plus an additional 3rd destination. (see associated con below)

Cons:
*With the vast amount of modulation sources and destinations, it"s a shame that there are only 2 LFOs. I often find myself modulating one LFO with the other, which then really only leaves me one sound shaping LFO
*The keys are high quality, but they"re so stiff, I have a really hard time hitting a low velocity note, because I have to press so hard to push them down all the way.
*The sequencer is nice, but I wish it had lanes of motion sequencing instead of just a mod wheel value lane
*I wish there was an indication on the screen as to what each knob"s value was for a given preset. Unless you have a computer up with a USB cable connected, you"re pretty blind as to the knob positions once you switch presets. (on the minilogue, when you move a knob, the parameter value flashes on the screen. Seems like this could be added to a firmware update)
*Naming presets without the editor is a test on patience
*No real-time sequencer recording
*Oscillators can"t be used as modulation sources
*Bass is so huge, it often needs to be dialed back in the mix (a slight amount of resonance can help here in some cases, as it reduces the bass to accommodate the resonant peak). It"s fine, because I can adjust this at my keyboard amp, or with pedals.
*I do wish there was a high pass filter.
*It takes menu diving to get to the pitch bend up and down values. 2 semitones is a sensible default. I wish it defaulted to an octave or 2 for the down.
*In the modulation video that Moog released as part of the sub 37, they mention a couple times that this synth is like a tiny modular synth. Well, it"s not. The components are hard-wired together in order. You can"t route an LFO to the mixer, for example. They mean that it"s modulation section allows you to get some sounds that you would normally only think was possible with a modular synth, but just don"t let that deceive you into thinking you can change the order of the modules or patch them together in different ways.
*I wish the pitch and filter mod knobs could be configured in the menus to target other destinations so that I could have 3 custom destinations per mod bus

Tips:
*Get a treble booster pedal or a regular boost pedal with bass and treble adjustments. Take a cable from the headphone out into the pedal, then out of the pedal into the audio input. Take the bass knob of the boost pedal down quite a bit, turn up the external input on the mixer until it squeals and back it off a little, listen to the fat compressed smooth bass tone you get. It is a dramatic sound difference than what you get with the default external in distortion.
*Keep the osc levels at or below noon to get a clean/non-aggressive sound
*Download the Peter Dyer presets from Moog"s site, and deconstruct them. I learned a ton about sound design in general from just breaking down a few of his patches I liked.
*This synth is a huge guitar pedal. Plug in your guitar and you have the whole filter and modulation sections. You can get wah, tremolo, crazy space sounds, slicer (with no sequencer, but no notes), or just use the multidrive circuit for nice creamy overdrive.

The synth to buy if you dont want to buy twice..

By Benjamin S. from Germany
Music Background: Pianist

When getting into synthesizers the options are endless. Everyone that has a little experience with analog hardware synths knows the Moog name and its signature sound which is absolutely the staple of the Subsequent 37. The subsequent 37 was my second synthesizer and I have used it on basically every track thus far...

For many, the core sound of the oscillators and the filter are enough to pull the trigger on this synth. They provide a great "space" to add perfect baselines and sub frequencies to your tracks. Most importantly, this synth fits VERY well with soft synth leads over the top of it - this is key since not everyone has the possibility to purchase multiple hardware synths. I personally pair this synth with a Novation Peak and the possibilities are endless...

In addition to the basslines, the Subsequent 37 has insane deapth ( sonic possibilities ). You can go from drum sounds to leads to the signiture baselines to, in my eyes even evolving low pads. I have had this synth now for half a year, and I feel like I know 10% of its potential which is a good thing. This 10 percent has been enough to finish my productions.

In short - If you are looking for a synth that can basically do it all in regard to bass and low end, this is probably the best option. You can go with other synths, but you will probably often catch yourself thinking, "man I wish i could do this - but i cant" - I have never had that situation with this synth.

I purchased this synth locally at a dealer because i wanted to convince myself of the build quality everyone craves about in regard to moog, i have no affiliation or have not been influenced by moog in any way to write this.

Subsequent37

By Sweetwater Customer

Amazing instrument, has total analogue characteristics. Duophonic is about all you need for Moog tones.
Killer bass!!!! Lovable trebles. Its fun to make your own sounds. Also, has a vast array of its own presets.
Incredible. I have played the Sub37 tribute in the store. I must have been there for hours. So I finally decided to get one. I am not sorry!!!

Synth Endgame

By Mark from Baltimore, MD

Hearing reviews and stuff, I got the feeling Moog synths were just for elitists. Listening to demos, though, I found out they were real workhorses. I saved my pennies and pulled the trigger. SO VERY worth it! A single oscillator can do so much with two LFOs doing their assignable magic. The filter is, of course, magic, and it comes with the now-industry-standard two envelopes... which allows for some surprisingly plucky sounds. This thing is built like a truck. Despite that, the knobs are very precise and responsive.

I don't have enough time to talk about features... but this has just about everything (minus MIDI thru). A really fun arpeggiator and step sequencer, being able to mess with the beat frequency, more glide settings than I knew I needed, and envelopes that you can configure to re-trigger (a dream come true for me). It's well-thought-out for sure. Assignable modulation, everything's per-patch and saveable. The settings allow you to do some cool stuff (change the dials from absolute to relative so you can jam with this thing live without worrying about preset values and awkward jumps in value). Hell, it has a light show mode.

That brings me to my last point: this thing is sheer eye candy. I love the mixer section drawing a cool zig-zag between the oscillators and the filter, and all the bank/patch buttons being in a neat line is artistic genius (take that, MatrixBrute). Amber lights, lit pitch/mod wheels, wood ends, metal back, discreet little screen (sorry, Moog One)... I cannot sing this thing's praises highly enough.

After writing all that, I kinda want a second one...

Moog Subsequent 37

By Scott from AZ
Music Background: Bass and Keys, Praise and Worship

There are more in-depth reviews on here and the web but here are my initial thoughts. Wow! You get what you pay for and Moog is no exception. I"ve only had it a few days and I"m sure I"ll never tap into its full potential. I own a Novation Bass Station ll also and although they produce the same type of sounds, there is something to be said about about a moogs creamy, warm sound. I got this synth primarily for the one knob per function features. Yes, it costs more than its competitors but the build quality make it feel like you are playing a real instrument not a plastic toy. They each serve their own purpose and I"m not trying to take anything away from the BSll (remember, you get what you pay for...). The moogs key bed is smooth and responsive, the knobs feel smooth and substantial with good resistance, its body is built like a tank. Obviously I haven"t owned it very long but I know quality when I see it. Do I think it"s worth the price tag? An emphatic yes. I expect this instrument will outlast me and I will be handing this down to my kids.

Very Deep Synth

By Sweetwater Customer

Firstly, I use synths for jazz fusion, funk, hip hop, prog rock etc.

For all the people saying it cannot create classic Moog sounds, they have either never played one, or don't know how to program it. That being said, I don't believe this was how its designers intended it to be used. There are 3 points in the signal path where you can overdrive the signal (the oscillator levels, feedback, and multidrive) and it's quite obvious from the many demos on youtube that this is what they are advertising more than anything. If you keep the levels low you can get some great classic sounds. As good as a Minimoog? Not quite; the Mini still has a character that the 37 can't match to my ears, possibly because the oscillators are so stable. However, it's infinitely more flexible than the Model D, and also more playable as it has a spring-loaded pitch wheel and you can assign virtually anything to aftertouch. The keyboard feels fantastic, much better than the one on the Sub Phatty or original Sub37.

Also, the adjustable filter slope is very cool. The 12 and 6DB versions are particularly nice as they give the patch a very different character. However, the 6DB filter is the only one which opens up all the way. The classic 24DB filter is darker than the one on the Minimoog so even open fully on the synth plus using an expression pedal to extend the range, it's not as bright. This may or may not be a problem for you.

The LFO's are fantastic, and by using the filter envelope with the loop function, you can create custom wave shapes that will modulate any parameter you choose. Extremely flexible and lots of fun.

Not everything is perfect, though. One annoyance is the patch volume parameter is in a menu. This really should be on the synth itself because of how loud this thing can get if you want to overdrive the sound. Otherwise your levels for each patch will be all over the place. Another frustration is the sensitivity of some of the knobs, especially for the LFO depths and rates. You have a ton of travel when in extreme settings, but it takes some time to dial in subtle modulation, particularly for vibrato...the knobs get too crazy too quickly. I'm also not really a fan of the drive, though I understand lots of other users love it. And to assign aftertouch, you need to go into a menu, otherwise there is none.

In short, this does sound like a Moog, but it's a more modern Moog sound. It is capable of the classic softer tones but that's not its selling point, and there are better synths out there if you only want these tones. If you want the most flexible option, I think this wins against those hands down. Plus this has a sequencer and arpeggiator which I haven't experimented with at all, among many other features. But it is definitely a more modern synth, with a more clinical sound, compared to some other options. Is that bad? No, just different. It can definitely let you be very expressive with your playing if you know what you're doing. So overall I recommend it, with some reservations.

Moog Subsequent 37

Totally Awesome Synth!!

By Jeffrey E. from Rhode Island
Music Background: I'm a self made musician who has been playing Guitar and Synths for a long time. I have my own Studio where I record my music.

It's True what they say, "Nothing Beats a Moog" I own quite a few synths and the closest I ever got to a moog was the Realistic MG-1 made by moog music, inc. The Subsequent 37 is the most expensive synth I have ever purchased and I have to say it was well worth it. Best money spent. No disappointments. It is everything it claims to be and more, much more. If you love that true analog sound of the moog with it's deep bass sounds as well as tweaking everything to how you like, then this is the synth for you. I have no regrets.

No regrets

By Courtney W. from Rockwall, TX
Music Background: Worship Musician

This is the most money I've dropped for a keyboard/synth ever! So glad I did, the sound is so fat and with all of those knobs on the front, it's a breeze to sculpt the sound you want. Sub 37 is a keeper. Thank you Kevin Samuel for getting this out to me superfast.

This is just a wonderful build product with endless possibilities

By Martin B. from Raleigh NC

It was designed to offer more way to create new sounds then the designers conceived. Giving you the flexibility of a modular unit with the usability of a live performance instrument. See it not as a keyboard or another synth but a unique electronic instrument with it own character. A lifetime of creative possibilities.

Holy Moog, Batman!

By Rory M. from Saratoga Springs, UT
Music Background: Graduate of UCLA Film Scoring Program and Golden West Recording Arts Practicum. Composer, engineer and player since 1977.Big Modular builder and mic modder. Home studio and Live Theater audio nut.

I have a lot of gear, including modular synths, most of which I built myself.
Last week I purchased a Moog Subsequent 37 and spent most of a day just checking it out.
First, the build quality is impeccable, right down to the box it comes in.
Knobs are smooth and stable, markings around the knobs actually (for the most part) accurately reflect frequencies and db scales. The buttons are nice and solid and dont feel like they will ever wear out.
Really nice aluminum case with beautiful wood sides.
Toying with it, I found a wealth of really cool sounds and even the presets were good.
There is something about this synth that begs you to explore and create, and enjoy doing it.
Of course, the Moog sound is here in spades, but being able to switch to different filter types in real-time adds that much more. The Arpeggiator and sequencer are easy to use and pretty versatile.
One thing I would like to see that I haven't seen on a synth since the Yamaha CS60/80 is a switchable glissando / portamento.function. In the Yamaha you could switch to a mode where the glide could be stepped per note, or smooth between notes.Maybe in a software update, Moog? Please?

Even with all those knobs (40) and buttons (74!) there is more underneath by way of using the software editor or the menus in the somewhat tiny but readable LED display.
Also, the mod and pitch wheel are the best I have ever had- smooth and quick as you want to go.
The Mute button is a nice touch as well, so you can set up a sound in headphones and then unmute and play out to the mains.Handy in live situations I am sure. The headphone amp is strong in this one btw.

The keyboard is nicely built and solid. Fast, but not too springy. Nice velocity and aftertouch sensing too. Everything about this synth exudes confidence, class and taste.

The MultiDrive knob adds some useful distortion and growl that I usually would have to get with an outboard pedal, and gives each patch another set of options.

I haven't explored the envelope generators to full effect, but having a Delay, Attack, then Hold before Sustain and Release just adds to the ability of this synth to create more sophisticated patches. Not to mention the latch and loop features.

Just writing this wants me to go back to my Subsequent 37 and start creating again and get something down to tape (No, really to tape-I have an Otari MTR-12 4 track 1/2" deck).

By the way, even though the Subsequent 37 is a mono (OK, make that Paraphonic) synth doesn't mean it has to be limited. Try adding layers to create stereo tracks and even more evolving sounds in your DAW.
You might think the price is high for a monosynth but actually I think this is a bargain compared to the Moog Model D, Voyager and other Moog products. Affordable for the project guys, yet professional enough to truly impress. Great Job, Moog! Now, about that portamento setting...

This Moog Rocks!!

By Rory M. from Saratoga Springs, UT
Music Background: Graduate, UCLA Film Scoring program

I have been involved with synthesis since around 1978, when I bought a Yamaha CS-60. What struck me about that synth was the immediacy and playing ability. This Moog has that same quality; it is a joy to play and experiment with, and just invites creative expression. And it fits in great with my other synths including several self-built modulars and my main controller, a Yamaha S90xs.
The sub37 will be a coveted member of my studio and there"s no way it will gather dust.
Build quality.is exemplary, and the sounds both classic Moog and more modern sounds as well.
My sales rep Evan did a great job getting my order and delivery fast and easy!

The real deal

By J R.
Music Background: bassist, synthesist, producer

I was looking for something to replace my Korg Minilogue, which I was never all that happy with. My other synth is a Virus TI2, but instead of getting another synth comparable to that (in terms of making complex sounds), I decided to go the other route, and got the Subsequent 37. Those bass sounds I was lacking on the Korg... they're all here, and I also found this much more intuitive, in terms of sound design than the Korg, interesting, because this is a more elaborate synth, overall. I've had so much fun setting up my own sounds and tweaking presets. Also, the keyboard on this thing feels excellent. No regrets, here, at all.

Endless Sound Discovery

By JaredRC from Hewitt, NJ
Music Background: Recording Artist, Piano, Guitar player

This Subsequent37 has sound of authority and power. The biggest limitation to this experience is my knowledge about synthesis. Its an endless discovery of new sounds, and funny what you run into by accident (ie. "Who are You" synth). One cool thing about the arpeggiator is ability to be slaved by a DAWs clock so you don't have to worry about quantization later. I always look forward to playing this Moog in my makeshift home studio. Turning knobs from the envelope section to MOD to Glide to Arp is a quick adjustment and becomes intuitive. If you're going to Lucky Man(ELP) it, don't forget to turn off Filter and Resonance after setting both OSCs to a square wave, add glide, then detune OSC1,OSC2 slightly. This is all just Mono output which is a powerful sound.
Run output though a stereo effect box of any kind, the sound widens out quite nicely, and this is a whole new world of sound discovery.

It was a thrill when the Subsequent37 arrived, perfectly packaged. Many thanks to Mac Hatton for preparing this shipment and getting the Moog to me so quickly.

Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun

By PBZ from Northern VA

In mid-summer 2017 I bought the Moog Sub-37 Tribute from Sweetwater - LOVED IT and was very happy. That said, about a month or so later the Tribute was discontinued and replaced by the new Subsequent 37. Though I was happy with my Tribute I was a tad annoyed that a new model would replace my synth less than 2 months after I received it. I posted a comment relating my feelings about this on Moog's You Tube introduction video of the Subsequest 37. Again, no big deal and I didn't plan to give it much more thought....

....The NEXT morning after I made my You Tube comment I get a call from Sweetwater saying Moog had read my comment and offered to upgrade me to the Subsequent 37 free of charge if I was willing to pay to ship my Tribute back to Sweetwater. Are you kidding me??! "HECK YEAH I'LL PAY TO SHIP IT BACK - THATS A DEAL!!" Now I ask you, how great is that kind of service from both Moog and Sweetwater??? I did not ask to exchange my Tribute yet they took the initiative to find out who I was, contact me, and arrange for the exchange! I know of no other companies in this day and age that would ever initiate such good will with its customers, especially AFTER a sale! Well about a week later (last week) my new Subsequent 37 arrived. I wasn't expecting much difference from the Tribute but I must say the upgrades in sounds on the Subsequent are certainly significant and quite frankly this new machine is a total SONIC BEAST! I'm so glad I got the new machine, and I think you will like it too - its a very powerful music and sound producing tool! Let the addiction begin!

Thanks to Mark Magdich at Sweetwater for the awesome and unheard of customer service!
