ART S8 8-channel Microphone Splitter Reviews

8x2 Microphone Signal Splitter with Direct and Transformer-isolated outputs, Ground-lift switches, and Attenuation Pads on Each Channel

The ART S8 8-channel microphone splitter gives you an effective tool for splitting eight balanced low-impedance microphone signals to pairs of outputs, giving you 16. Each channel of the S8 provides one direct output and one transformer-isolated output from a single microphone. You can send the direct outputs to the main or FOH mixer, and the second isolated outputs to a monitor or recording mixer. The direct outputs pass phantom power from the main mixer to the microphones for use with condenser microphones. If you want a dependable splitter for you microphone signal, choose the S8!

Just what we needed for our IEMs

By Mike from IN

So far, so great. These units in our IEM chain have transformed our rehearsals and performances, giving us autonomy over our monitors and the sound engineers full control of the FOH.

Great bang for your buck!

By Marc T. from El Cajon, CA
Music Background: Musician, vocal, pedal steel, live recording.

I used to use a couple of little "two banger" types, with just a couple of inputs, but I compared them to this unit and it's night and day, meaning the old ones were terrible sounding and this unit is clean and clear to my ears. I don't hear any coloration at all and I haven't had any problems with noise. I used this on a live recording of my friend's band, and ran all the vocal mikes through it out of the direct out to their pa which has phantom power. I then used the isolated out for my recording ruining that down a 50 ft. snake to my setup. I used a couple of short snakes to plug from the S8 to the pa and the other one into my snake on stage. It made it so much easier and cleaner to set up and everything went hunky dory.

Really good deal

By Jeff
Music Background: All over the board

This box is actually an awesome deal. I literally took mine apart to see what's inside. It's not much, which is how it should be. All it is, is just a 1:1 transformer connected to some XLR connectors...just what you want. I thought mine worked great. I am, by no means, a fan of ART. I usually think their stuff is too cheap, but they nailed this one. I actually calculated out how much it would cost for a person like myself to build one of these, and the cost on this was way lower. Save yourself that time and money.
As for Ryan Goldbacher's review, I don't buy what he's saying at all about the direct out. It's just straight wired from one connector to the other. He's got a problem somewhere else.
Like I said, I'm not a fan of ART, but I gave this a shot and was happy with it. I used mine with some recordings and used the split out for monitors for the band for a location recording gig. It worked perfect.

Simple. Works great.

By Dave from Phoenix

A great and AFFORDABLE device for an on location recording guy like myself who occasionally has to split signals from the stage to my recording system and the FOH. Also passes line level signals with the input pad engaged. Enormously helpful and headache free. Highly recommended!

Terrible Unit

By Ryan G. from Nashville, TN
Music Background: TM/FOH Gavin DeGraw, Shooter Jennings, Greg Bates

The box isn't all it's cracked up to be. The iso outputs sound terrible and the direct outs don't sound all that great either. Put it up against an EWI and whirlwind split and they were much cleaner with better transient response. Also i don't really understand why they needed to add the extra electronics for a pad switch. Probably doesn't help with the sound quality. If you're looking into one of these check out EWI splitters. Much better sounding.

Perfect

By Brennan from Fort Wayne, IN
Music Background: Technical Director

Does exactly what it's supposed to, with no noise. The fact that phantom power is passed on only one of the channel outputs is a big plus.

Easy, quiet, nice splitter.

By Greg from Nashville
Music Background: Recording Engineer, Songwriter

I've only used this once so far, but will be again in a couple of days. I used it for a songwriter/acoustic set night. I was videoing the show and recording the audio to Pro Tools as well as running audio to the FOH mixer. It was easy to set up and worked great! Recordings sound good and there's no added noise. Bought another one so I can do 16 tracks for larger shows in the near future. Great value!

ART S8 Mic Splitter

By Dave I. from Belton, TX
Music Background: 40 years + experience in playing, and singing both professionaly, and as a hobby.

The perfect addition to my Studio! It's been a hassle trying to run my mics directly into the Tascam 1800 interface, then out to my PA when recording the whole band. Now I can push the mics directly into both!
I can now adjust each mic for 'live' sound independantly from what goes to the computer. The vocalists can actually hear themselve clearly, and it's a whole lot easier to tweak the feedback levels of each one.

Transparent

By Alan B. from Western Maine
Music Background: Recording engineer, composer, musician, professional

No complaints. It does exactly what it is supposed to do and does it with no discernable hiss, hum or coloration of the sound. All at a great price.

The S8 Rox

By Phil from Dallas
Music Background: Pro Musician / Band Leader

Great piece of gear.

I use it for an onstage wireless monitor setup in which I run all my wireless vocals (and wired as well) through my own board and out to my in-ear monitor setup.
With this, the house gets it's individual line out and I get mine. Everyone wins.

Passive unit that does not depend on a power supply (one less thing to break). No detectable loss in signal strength and no audible coloring of the sound.

Great piece of gear! Thank you Art!

Good stuff. Great service.

By Mike B. from Kansas City, Mo
Music Background: 40+ years pro musician, live sound engineer, music gear repair tech.

ART products have always been a great value for the dollar and this product is no exception. Very transparent sound and well built. This was also my first purchase from Sweetwater. I appreciate their commitment to the worship sound market in contrast to the "other" music gear retailers. Sweetwater will be my first choice now.

Wonderful Unit

By Alcarr from Forrest City, AR
Music Background: Recording Engineer.

I was extremely pleased with how well the s8's performed during a live recording i tracked this weekend. I put four of them together as an alternative to a traditional split snake. Ordered a couple of snakes for the outs and recorded a high quality performance. Extremely Happy with this purchase.

ART S8 mic splitter

By Drew P. from United States
Music Background: Professional Musician

Great piece of gear, affordably priced. I use this 8 channel mic splitter when performing live with my jazz quartet. In combination with a Presonus firestudio and a Macbook pro, I multitrack record our live performances, using the spliiter to send necessary channels to both recording and PA. Quiet. No noise. Very happy with this purchase. Isolation output perfect for this application

Working perfectly

By Sweetwater Customer from San Jose, CA
Music Background: Worship Architect

We needed to split our drum signal and I've been very happy with how this unit has performed. It has been very transparent with some nice features including ground and pads per/channel. I appreciate that it can pass phantom power to drum mics. It's a powerful little 1u that has made a world of difference for us.

Don't get caught with out it.

By Joshua from Orlando
Music Background: Recording Engineer

Saved my job and created many more just by having it around. Most splitters cost thousands of dollars. This one is under $250... why not have it just incase you need it. Recorded a 1K tone to see if there was a difference in levels to my surprise there wasn't.
Then I recorded a snare hit to see if there was a delay and again nothing. I haven't tested it on a live event yet but you can tell me how it works out.
