Electro-Harmonix Small Clone Analog Chorus Pedal Reviews
You've heard the Small Clone. This is Kurt Cobain's chorus pedal of choice, responsible for the dimension in "Come As You Are" and countless other Nirvana tracks. The Small Clone's rich, spacey, and totally analog tones have kept it on the must-have stompbox list for more than 20 years now - and the second you engage this thing you'll hear why. You can take the Small Clone from a subtle shimmer to a pulsating warble to crazy Leslie-style effects. If you're after a chorus with real mood, real vibe... you've found it. The Small Clone.

Classic sounding beautiful Chorus.
The Classic Sound You Know and Love
Got a ton of Chorus Pedals? Ones that range from basic to intergalactic voyages? I do... None, however, could get me that true eighties post punky pouty chorus. This bad larry does it... for obvious reasons. It was either the Boss CE-2, Boss CH-1, or it was the Small Clone. The Small Clone takes you down to the basics. On/Off, a dial to increase or decrease your lush and a switch to exponentially accentuate it.
This pedal is a blast! I love the sound, the control and the sold depressing moody vibes it can give. A#1 in my choice for chorus that has to be defined and present. Grab one today, you won't be disappointed!
It does the thing!
After tons of research, shootouts, and demos. The small clone won me over and earned a place on my newly acquired pedalboard. There's tons of options for choruses and plenty of sounds, while others might be more versatile or more 80s sounding if you're looking for a very 90s flavored analog chorus this is the one to go for, and at about half the price of some of the other options I was consider, some reviews complain about a loud pop when engaging I haven't experienced this.
Great Chorus Pedal
I love this pedal for its simplicity. After a day of chasing tone and adjusting settings, it's nice to just plug in to small amp and get a nice and easy chorus with just the right amount of modulation for noodling.
Small Clone Analog Chorus Pedal
I now understand why this pedal is still in production . Slightly large for your pedalboard , but worth every inch of space it takes up . Two controls simplify usage, leaving your mind free to find just that sound you're looking for. Quickly becoming my go- to pedal .
Great sound
Great pedal, easy to use and fit perfectly on my board. It has a wide range of chorus effect and adds a nice full sound. Never been disappointed with an Electro Harmonix pedal yet!
Classic and Reliable
When you think of a chorus pedal, this pedal should be the building block/starting point of what your brain resorts to when you think of that chorus pedal you're in search of. This pedal has that sound, it's a classic, it's reliable, and it will make you want to learn and play the intro riff to Come As You Are by Nirvana!
Thanks again to Sales Engineer, Zach Shepard for making this an easy and enjoyable purchase.
Use for synthesizer?
I have a duophonic analog synthesizer camni use this pedal with my synth ? Berhinger odyssey
I love this pedal
The simplicity of this pedal is what makes it so excellent one switch and one knob hone in the perfect chorus sound with a flip of the switch and turn the knob to your desired chorus. If you are looking for that nirvana sound, get this now.
Awesome!
Classic chorus pedal that does exactly as advertised
Does the job
Cool pedal. Works as it should so far!
Classic!
Basically Nirvanas chorus, just what I was looking
I LOOVE THIS PEDAL
I got this pedal a couple of months back and this is probably my favorite pedal for its sound and overall not to pricey cost as well as the fact that it hasn't failed me yet although if it ever does seem to not work at all, it really is an easy fix because, all you really need to do is replace the battery as sometimes the old ones don't work but, all in all a great pedal that I would recommend to anybody trying to get a vintage 80's sound although it can also pull off a 90's sound.
Screw kurt cobain
I've used this pedal long before he was even heard of. Hsd one since about 1988 and it's still goin. Only thing I ever had to do is replace the foot switch twice. I dont use it because he did, I use it because its the absolute best chorus pedal that's ever been invented. Gonna order another one for me and give my dinosaur to my son because he just wants it instead of a new one.
Excellent
This pedal will cure moderate to severe mesothelioma, easily my favorite pedal. If your considering this pedal just get it you won't be disappointed.
Take it from me, some guy on internet.
Looks Good, Sounds Good, Easy.
This pedal is clearly a very popular choice for Nirvana fans looking to dial in a chorus similar to Kurt Cobain's on Nevermind. And it's absolutely great for that.
However, one of the main reasons I prefer this pedal over many other chorus pedals I have tried is it's ease of use.
The quality of both the build and the effect itself are great, Electro-Harmonix is good for that. But in particular, I really love how easy it is to dial in what I need. One depth switch, one rate knob. Easy. I have used other chorus pedals that have many more options, knobs etc but don't sound nearly as good as this one. Some do not even have the depth that the small clone has.
This chorus is great for using live as well as for recording. It plays well with amps, other effects and even with my helix. In a recording situation, you can stack different layers of guitars with this chorus set differently on each track and you'll get some really great sounding tones.
In a live situation, the small clone isn't THAT small. For comparison, it's a bit bigger than an average Boss pedal. It doesn't take up a ton of real estate but if you're trying to keep a small pedal board and don't want to dedicate a lot of space to a pedal that only does one thing, you may want to look at some of the nano chorus pedals EH produces.
Personally, I think the reason that they still make the pedal the size they do (as well as a mostly unchanged visual design) has to do with its popularity among Nirvana fans, even 29 years after Nevermind was released. They even give a nice little nod to the band on the packaging. Either way, I enjoy the vintage look of this pedal and wish they would use the older casings more often with pedals like the poly chorus, micro synth etc.
All in all, if you're looking for a solid chorus to add to your rig, this one is totally with the price tag. Don't hesitate to try one out.
Thanks to sweetwater and Ian for always getting my orders to me quickly and safe and sound!
Chorus pedal
The simplest and most efficient chorus pedal out there. Don't complicate a ham sandwich when it comes to getting a chorus pedal. Just get this one.
Amazing chorus pedal
You can get some really angelic sounds from this pedal. But my favorite is when you get feedback and you turn this pedal on you can get some really awesome sounding feedback
May be my new favorite pedal
Sounds great on it's own but when paired with distortion, fuzz or delay it sounds superb. I've been playing it a lot with a big muff, a boss DS-1 and an Ibanez analog delay. Truly great lofi sounds. Only bad thing I can say is it's not very versatile but it doesnt need to be.
Outfreakingstanding
This baby gets it in, just like back in the day! Vintage sound quality. I'm a big fan of the Electro Harmonix pedal line.
Love it
Great chorus effect. If you"re a nirvana fan you"ll love this one but it sounds great regardless. It has earned a spot on my pedalboard forever.
Thanks Sweetwater
"Simplicity" the best
I'm not a "pedal head" so I don't have tons of experience with other Chorus pedals but I do know a good sound when I hear it. I reviewed many on here and although they all had some nice points/features, this one "spoke" to me. Too many knobs and you're forever fidgeting trying to get the right mix of effects (and that's what I'm trying to get away from). Not with this baby. One knob, one dial. Set it and forget it. Lush, jangly, sickeningly sweet or just a tad of wavy detune, this thing does it all and it does it quickly. I can't imagine being disappointed with this pedal. Old school sound and design...been around forever - there's a reason for that. What more could you want? Highly recommended.
Sky Pup
I have no idea why it took me 29 years to get one of these. Great pedal, and it's still housed in the big old-school chassis like a lot of Electro Harmonix pedals were back in the day. Simple controls, sounds great, well built, and very affordable. I like the rate knob set really slow through a driven amp. Or set it at about 12:00 with some reverb through a clean amp. It's an awesome chorus pedal.
Electro-Harmonix Small Clone Analog Chorus Pedal
What a great sounding chorus pedal. Easy to use - turn the dial and flip the switch and you're ready to play. Sweetwater is the best!
Smooth as Glass
This is the best guitar pedal I've ever used... five minutes playing through it I started kicking myself for not owning one for the past 20 years.... BUY IT NOW
Great!
I was amazingly blown away with the sound of this pedal.
Incredible CHorus
I have gone thorugh a bunch of chorus pedals looking for the one the blends the best, there is no sterile digital delay here. The blend is very transparent with your owqn guitar sound which is the best wasy to develop your own sound if that's what you're looking for. FOr great distortion blend i turn it on and leave it at the minimum setting. This is perfect for Randy lead tone and anything along those lines.
Best Chorus!!
The small clone chorus is probably one of my favorite pedals. The controls are quite simple and the tone is the best. It does anything from the police to nirvana to Metallica. Whether you are trying to play lush chords or rocking soloes this pedal is for you
YAY!
This pedal is freaking awesome!i got it for my birthday and it"s blown me away the vast sonic lush chorus is perfect for any pedal geek like me...you can"t go wrong with EHX!!!
Absolutely GREAT!
I wanted a simple and sweet sounding chorus pedal for my acoustic coffee house set up and this is it! Easy to use and dial in and not "over the top", just a nice, lush chorus sound. If you want something that tastefully adds a nice layered dimension to your sound, seriously consider this pedal!
Hands down the best
Been using mine for over 10 years now.
Lush Chorus that is unmatched in any price range.
Used it extensively in studio and for gigs.
A little battered but still keeps churning out the best chorus tones ever.
Cheap and outstanding
This pedal with this price is a joke ladies and gentelman. 0 used this pedal for 3 years. The voice of this pedal is like a dream. 0t mixes with distortion pedals like heaven sound. You can get vibes of 80's in clean and dist. way.
Also about song writing it helps too much bec. Of the sound and vibe it has you can create many things when you touch the strings the waves of your soul start.
0 definitely guarantee you this pedal you wont regret it. 0ts cheap for what it give to you. 0 used with my esp urban camo and its like a dream to me. Dont miss it!!!
The best pedal ever
I love this pedal it has made the song I am writing sound amazing I would recommend this pedal to any guitarist who is looking for a amazing chorus.
small clone
I had a boss CE-5 and there just wasn't enough of it. It only gave you a hint of chorus, the Small Clone gives you that great, deep, swirling chorus. And then the depth switch gives you even more. Plus it's the same one Cobain used so that makes it cool too.
I call it legacy value
The classic full chorus pedal from New York City. Classic size, tone, and simplicity. For the price, this has to be the best chorus pedal on the market. Rugged components but the paint job will not last long. It will look well used in about two weeks. They also make a Neo Clone chorus pedal with a smaller, more modern foot print and styling, but it doesn't have the 'legacy value' of this old timer.
The BEST Chorus pedal for the money!
I used a BOSS Super Chorus pedal for years. Then a friend had me try his EHX Small Clone. I was floored! Sure the Boss has more tweaking options. But it just plain didn't sound as good. And it (the BOSS) added treble and a bit of gain to my signal path, not cool. The EHX was more natural and didn't add or take anything away from my sound. And it was very affordable compared to other high end chorus pedals. Get one today!
SWEET!
Great chorus. My first, electro harmonix. Won't be my last pedal from them.
Love this sound
There is two things i want to say, Sweetwater is the best place to deal with and trust that you get what they say they will deliver and in every case for me never had any problems, and for this Electro Harmonix pedal i liked the reviews and demo so i bought it simple to operate looks good and from reviews its been around while battle field tested i liked that must be good to if people still buying them i also bought the Big Muff, now that pedal is as Donald Trump would say YUGE, lol Sweetwater well they are SWEET i will always be a customer
Great pedal
Awesome pedal, great sound, along with great service.
small clone chorus pedal
great price, works great sounds awesome, very happy !!
Love/Hate
Pros: Sounds incredible, sounds like real analog chorus with actual depth and dimension. I had a MXR Chorus and it didn't sound bad but it definitely had a slightly synthetic almost digital sound to it that I didn't like.
Cons: Really loud audible pop when engaging and disengaging. Like I literally thought my amp exploded when I turned it on for the first time... so not actually gonna be able to use this on a pedalboard.... which was kind of why I bought it...
Conclusion: really sad about this pedal because like I said the sound is really really nice and im not sure if I just got a dud but I'm gonna reiterate what I said about the Fender 68 series amps. Incredible sound and circuit that deserves to be made with top shelf components... I would rather pay another 50 bucks and the pedal actually be usable.. just sayin
Awesome Tone, Horrible Click!
For me this is a single setting chorus pedal with the dial at minimum and there you have it, perfect chorus tone. Sadly the on/off button makes a super loud clicking noise that bleeds into the signal and into the amp. Why EH, why? In 2022 a click-less on switch should be a given.
