Has been good while it lasted ...

By Marco B. from Duvall, WA
Music Background: Professional Session Drummer

I got this interface in August 2025 .. I really liked it, but I have to be honest, I had two friends that had their headphones fried on these, there was no acknowledgment from SSL about this issue and just today, while I was playing back content I heard this weird crackle on my headphones and the interface won't turn on again after that ..

The light powered button lights up but no other lights are working. Thankfully my headphones seem ok but this is really frightening, not sure if these are being looked by SSL at all, I have started a support case with Sweetwater and emailed SSL about it, I am sure this will likely be resolved but still, it is a bit scary that all these reports are surfacing and no real feedback from SSL. This has been paired with a Cranborne ADAT 500 , an SSL Puredrive Octo and sometimes I also use a Súper 8, been working great so far, but definitely needs some improvement.

Better than it has any right to be

By Jeremy C. from Boise, ID
Music Background: Classical musician and acoustic recording specialist

Let's face it, if you're looking at this device, it's because you're one of the following:

- looking for a step-up interface from a Focusrite, MOTU, or similar

- Looking to add to your rig but don't want to spend tons

- Looking for a good studio centerpiece but can't justify the $ that some of the other interfaces offer.

If you're the first camp, this is a no-brainer. It's pretty affordable (especially for what you get), offers great features, and is expandable.

If you're in the second camp, again, no-brainer. It's got tons of ins and outs, is expandable, and has great routing and configuring software.

If you're like me and in the 3rd camp, then you want a top-level interface, know exactly what you need, and don't want to pay for hype or purchase respect. I

When I bought this, my mindset was that I could use the preamps as fill-ins when needed but that I would patch in my own pres. For that reason, this was a better choice than the UA device that looks on paper to be the same because the SSL lets you fully bypass the preamps when using line inputs. However, imagine my surprise when the preamps actually turned out to be really quite good and useful. The pres are very clean and open with tons of headroom and are very easily configured in the software or from the front panel.

Add to that the additional inputs on ADAT allowing up to 8 more channels at 96kHz or 16 more at 44.1/48kHz. Plus the digital mixing capability inside the software is surprisingly good too. Somehow, this thing packs in so much quality and so many features while allowing you to build on top of it. And it actually sounds great. The conversion is absolutely top notch, the pres are extremely usable, the features in general are great, and it seems to be built for people who want a fully extensible studio centerpiece.

The only reason that I gave it the 4.5 stars instead of 5 is that it would have been totally possible to have another SMUX set to give 24 channels of 192, but it's limited to just 16 channels at 96kHZ or 8 channels at 192kHz. Granted, for the vast majority of people this wouldn't make a difference at all. Just a wish list item.

Short version, for like 99% of the people shopping for a great interface at a very reasonable price, this is likely the right choice.

Great Audio Interface Device

By Dave R.

I'm super happy with this audio interface. The specs are very good and has features such as you can have a different mix for each of two headphones. It was very easy to set up in ProTools. One of the main reasons that I bought it, besides the specs, is that there are physical knobs and a level meter for each of the eight inputs on the front of the device. No single knob for everything, which makes efficiency during a recording session difficult. It's solidly built of metal, not plastic.

WARNING - Such an awesome interface - but a terrible long-term investment.

By Matthew F. from Burke, VA

My first ever review, and I'm sad its negative. I ordered an SSL18 the day it was announced. After using it daily for a month, it up-and fried my VSX headphones, destroying itself in the process. I was able to get both the interface and my VSX headphones replaced, thankfully. But unfortunately, after several months of regular use, the SSL18 has once again fried my VSX headphones. I've had the HP Outputs set to "standard" mode, not high-impedance, so that's not the issue. And I never listen loud. I have the Alpha 8 as well, and together this pair ran my project studio beautifully. Now I'm afraid to have my outboard gear hooked up to these interfaces.

FANTASTIC INTERFACE!!

By Chris C. from Central MA
Music Background: Producer, engineer, drummer, multi-instrumentalist

Between my home studio and the pro studio I used to operate, I've used probably a dozen recording interfaces through the years. This is the first one I've been truly satisfied with in a very long time.

The preamps are clean and have plenty of gain. The 4K switch adds some bite that works great on some sources. The haedphone amps are clear and articulate. The extensive routing possibilities are exactly what I needed for my very complex setup. Between my drum setup and outboard gear, I'm using all of the analog and digital inputs. I utilized the return on input 1 as a way to switch in my LA610 without having to change the way my cables are patched. It's very handy. My ISA428s synched up via ADAT and BNC with no fuss at all.

The conversion sounds superb to my ears.

The SSL 360 software is easy to navigate due to the clean console layout, and it's visually appealing as well. The driver has also been rock solid so far on my Creation Station CS450 with Cubase Pro 14 and Wavelab.

The talkback feature is a very nice bonus because it frees up an extra mic pre for recording and adds extra control. The inclusion of the LMC compressor with the ability to patch in tracks using the loopback in/out is also a really nice touch.

The build quality is excellent. The knobs feel sturdy and professional. The whole unit has a classy look and vibe to it.

For this price (or maybe any price) the SSL18 just can't be beat, in my opinion.

Excellent clarity and easy to use.

Great interface for the price point!

By Sweetwater Customer from IL

I've owned this interface for about 5 months, using it daily. It sounds great! The amount of ins and outs allows me to do everything I want. Setup was simple. Device is easy to read and use.

Mixed Bag

By Sweetwater Customer

The SSL 360 software functionality is fantastic, providing seamless control and workflow integration. The connectivity options are another big highlight for my studio. Routing a SSL PureDrive Octo to this device with a single ADAT connection is a dream. However, music generally sounds covered up from this interface and I found it lacking the clarity and openness that I was expecting. Although, considering the price, it is still very capable and will be a great fit for many people.

Awesome but I was misinformed or misunderstood

By Adam T. from New Cumberland, PA

The way I had my home studio setup for recording allowed to me to either record solo or live without any routing changes. I had all of my preamps going into a Bose T8S mixer, out to a master chain, out of the master chain into a Volt interface. This allowed me to record single or multiple things through the master chain without any changes. Just sit and play. I was told the SSL18 would eliminate the need for the mixer and would replace both the mixer and my Volt because I could route the same setup in the SSL18. I can't or at least I can't figure out how. It seems you can mirror two channels and send them to 9 & 10 with the insert loops on channels 1 & 2 which makes my head explode trying to make sense of it. If I understand correctly, the insert loop for outboard gear is on channels 1 & 2 only because it's the only one with a toggle switch. You can only send 1 mirrored pair at a time out to 9 & 10 because it overrides the previous outs. So confusing. What I ended up doing was running all my preamps into the SSL18 then line outs of the SSL 18 into my master rack, out of the master rack to the Volt and into the computer. So my master rack was on everything and I just sit and play without needing a PhD in software routing to record a track. This unit sounds awesome and is super powerful but beware the complexity.

This is what I have been waiting for

By Sweetwater Customer

Finally! SSL has made the exact product I have been waiting for. There's no fluff. It totally delivers the sound I was expecting. Having a 9th mic preamp for talkback or just an extra preamp when mic'ing a full drum kit is genius. I also love the fact that I can interface this directly with a headphone system like the Behringer P16 because the 360 software will let you mult any input to the ADAT outputs. Freaking killer!! I almost bought the Apollo but I'm so glad I decided to go with the SSL. For the money, I was able to add the Alpha 8 to add more channels and I'm planning to get the Pure Drive Octo to have 24 inputs.

SSl 18 Audio Interface

By Jose M. from Florida
Music Background: Classical Pianist

I was in the market for a new audio interface and, after a lot of research, I settled with the SSL 18. Wow, I couldn't be any happier, so far so great. The warmth and sound details that came even out my old Yamaha S90ES keyboard was very impressive. I do not know the engineering inside the unit, but it sounds superb. The sound, in my humble opinion, is a combination of warmth and smooth clarity. Also, so far, I have noticed zero latency even with my old 2014 Mac Mini. At this price range ,this unit is unbeatable.

Don't hesitate - get this!

By Sweetwater Customer from Bethlehem, PA

Super impressed with the build quality and metering. It's chunky and heavy and built like a tank. The SSL360 software works great for dialing up headphone and monitor mixes. Latency on this is negligible. The mic preamps have a ton of gain and I'm not having to use a cloud lifter for ribbon mics or my SM7b. I'm planning to get the Alpha8 to add more i/o for my outboard mic preamps and compressors. Overall it has been exactly what I was expecting and hoping for from SSL. Well worth the money!

Huge Upgrade

By Jake from Santa Ana, CA
Music Background: Mixing / Mastering / Producing / Arranging 10 years

I had a babyface for maybe 5 years before I got this SSL. I bought this just for ease of using an analog 2 bus but I got so much more than I bargained for. I don't know what exactly is doing it, but my same speaker setup just sounds better with this interface. It's more... analog? 3d? has more space? a thicker low end?

Maybe its the actual PSU instead of usb power, or maybe its the signal path, or maybe its the 32 bit architecture and SSL's new SOTA DAC's, but shot for shot, same sample rate, same speakers, same room, this sounds noticeably better when a/b tested against the babyface.

Besides that, I'm a fan of the SSL 360 mixer software, all the extra features, the ease of use and the stellar workflow design by SSL. Like the dedicated 2nd optical out that can be converted to a s/pdif for my tc electronic clarity analyzer to always have an output when combined with the mirror output from the monitor bus. Just good design, good hardware, good workflow, good software. It's just better.
