Massive Drums Recorded by Bob Rock

Ask anyone at Sweetwater, and they'll tell you that the right drums can make or break a rock tune. The Rock Foundry SDX expansion for Toontrack's Superior Drummer is your ticket to achieving the driving drums your next project demands. Whether you're programming drums by hand, playing them via an electronic kit, or simply looking for a quick drag-and-drop solution to spice up your music, you'll get what you need in The Rock Foundry SDX. This SDX expansion includes seven complete kits plus alternate configurations — all tracked by world-renowned rock authority Bob Rock at The Warehouse Studio in Vancouver. The result is nothing short of epic.

Note: This expansion pack requires Superior Drummer 3 software.

A huge library recorded by a rock legend

Featuring 65GB of unprocessed drum sounds, The Rock Foundry SDX can easily become your go-to drum software for rock production. And they were recorded by Bob Rock, who you can thank for the massive drum sounds on recordings by Metallica, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Motley Crue, Bryan Adams, and many more iconic works. Best of all, The Rock Foundry SDX includes mix presets created by Bob Rock himself, giving you an insight on how a master producer envisions that these kits should sound.

Choose from complex or simple mic setups

The Rock Foundry SDX is configured as two individual SDX expansions — a "Main" section created with a multi-mic setup, and a "Mono" section recorded with a minimal setup. Between the two, you'll be able to create convincing drum tracks in practically any style of rock from any era.

Toontrack The Rock Foundry SDX Expansion for Superior Drummer Features:

  • An amazing collection of drum sounds and MIDI performances for Toontrack Superior Drummer 3
  • Engineered by Bob Rock, whose extensive recording and mixing credits include Metallica, Aerosmith, Motley Crue, and many others
  • Recorded at The Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, British Columbia
  • 7 individual kits by Ludwig, Ayotte, Gretsch, Dunnett, Yamaha, and more
  • Additional assortment of 6 hi-hats, 6 ride cymbals, and 16 crash cymbals

Ultimate Rock Drums!

The packs sounds great! Has some of the best sounding snare samples of any sample library I've heard. The kicks are pretty chunky sounding as well. Overall a great pack. If you happen to do a fair amount of rock or metal productions, this pack is absolutely great. Also as always, buying from Sweetwater was a seamless experience, had everything emailed instantly. The expansion pack is about 65gb, so it did take a fair amount of time to download.

Great drum library and sound

I am fairly new to the Superior Drummer software but finally decided to upgrade to version 3 and get the Bob Rock expansion solely to get that Metallica's Black Album drum sound. The "LA 1991" preset is very similar to the black album: I like that the cymbals sound very natural and have a lot of "sustain" (don't know if that's the word, I'm a guitarist) but I had previous experience with midi drums and the cymbals just weren't good enough. The toms and kick drum have a lot of weight and the snare is very close to the black album but needs some tweaking. Having presets helps you understand what the producers do to each drum part in the mix (reverb, EQ, compression, etc) and they are basically ready to use for a good professional demo (what I want) or even a studio ready production (what other people claim anyway).

Also, a big part of the drum sound comes from the midi itself (you have to really dig into programming the intensity of each drum hit and all the nuances of a real drummer) or just get a real drummer and record with a electronic kit.

There are other presets for pop, jazz, funk, country, 70s style of recorded drums and more metal and rock presets by Bob and the guys from Toontrack. It is an overall great package. If you like Bob Rock's production style this is a great tool.

I'm satisfied with my purchase. Great tool for all those bedroom guitarists that don't have the resources of a real drummer and all the mics, gear and years of experience recording drum sounds.

From E-drum perspective

I've had this since release. My setup is a Roland TD50. The main reason I'm giving this a lower grade is I've just found it really hard to get good articulations. The samples are loud without seemingly much volume to velocity. You can adjust "soft hits" all day long without being able to get the proper sound and feel- in order to have good expression around the kit between soft and loud. The ride is alomst at an average playing level when striking as jently as possible- 1-3 out of 127. I recently picked up the decades sdx and the playability is the best I've experinced from toontrack. The dynamics feel great for the most part. I've tried default mixers, volume and mixer adjustments and so on. The samples are good. It just doesn't translate to vdrums very well in my opinion. So if you want rock samples and you're not using vdrums this sounds great. Otherwise, I'd go with the decades sdx if you want some good sounding / good feeling drum kits.

Not Good

I was very disappointed when I first tried this SDX. The presets are absolutely worthless, ALL of them ! The Bob Rock ones are the WORST ! ironically since its named after him ! There are some good Gretch Toms and a few cymbals I liked, The snares are all crap, The rides are all washy with weak bells. There is only one kick drum that sounded any good. The dynamics are not good either when playing with E-drums as another reviewer has mentioned. There is a decent recorded room ambient. I really think they missed with this on and wish I would have purchased something else as this wont get used much unfortunately.

There's a reason so many Toontrack products begin with "EZ" - they really do make music creation easy. If you're like many of the songwriters here at Sweetwater, then you know how important it is to stay in the groove, especially if you're adding elements to your tracks that are a bit out of your wheelhouse. Toontrack products such as EZdrummer and EZkeys cover backing tracks in all kinds of styles, so you don't need to find session players to create songs, while EZmix lets you add polish to your tracks without being a pro engineer. There are tons of expansions to flesh out your palette, and software such as Superior Drummer if you want to dive in deeper. And thanks to our amazing relationship with Toontrack, the Sweetwater staff gets to use it all, so you can always get the inside story from your Sales Engineer.
