It's quite the distortion pedal for being a Randy rhoads and dialing his tones

Great pedal, blends nicely with my setup and what i need it for and nice to have something with randy name, im not a shredder, but but it has that sauce for a shredder.

My very first MXR Distortion + was from the 70s. My brother bought it for me for my 16th birthday. Sort of wish I still had it. It only powered with a battery. I recently put a cool pedalboard together and it was also very nice to do it with Sweetwater too actually. I am pleased with this version and how the Rhoads family let Dunlop dig into Randy's old pedalboard to examine his 70s Distortion +. All this being said, I really like th4e way it sounds. This later version is very pretty but also sounds as I remember. I do use my volume pedal to turn down a couple notches and I still have this nice distortion and when I stop it's quiet! That's because of my overall rig though. In the 70s when I was 16 it would scream when I 'd stop. LOL

Randy roads pedal is great !

I purchased this pedal because I really like Randy Rhoads. Never tried a Distortion + before, but figured I'd give it a shot. Sounds pretty good! Compared it with my current OD pedal, and was able to get some nice distortion and clean sounds from it. It took a bit of messing around with the knobs to find a sweet spot, as it's a bit noisy with max distortion. It's not a knock your socks off pedal, but is a nice addition to my setup. Good sound, quality build, and looks awesome!

Sounds hairy yet tight, superb when paired with an overdrive. Overall would highly recommend whether you're a die hard Randy fan like me, or just a pedal loving germanium hound.

I bought this for one reason it looks so cool! Don't plan on using it, it is an old school MXR dirty distortion and just not enought clarity for me. I plan on keeping it and keeping the box etc....Maybe in 60 years my kids can sell it. This not a hight end distortion box this is a way for MXR to make a little cash. Maybe it will work better for you but the mids make this just messy. I will try it on my blues amp that might work better. But it is so cool looking!!!!

I paired it with the marshall 59 super lead. Sounds great,and alternate the nobles for a darker thump.

I was lucky enough to first get the polka dot version of the RR pedal. Had to get this for the excellent sound and to match the guitar I own. Sounds great in front of a Marshall, as it was meant to be.

Sounds great but if you need more low end or mids put it behind a OD pedal and/or adjust your amp settings. Love it!!

Love the look of this pedal, the Rhoads guitar style design with signature and RR symbol. Pedal has a really nice clean distortion! It also comes with a felt bag with Randy's signature embroidered on it. Another great one from MXR! Sweetwater shipped fast when pre order released.

This pedal is absolutely amazing!

It's brighter than the stock Distortion Plus. With this said, use it like Randy did and use it in front of an already overdriven tube amp...NOT a clean amp. Another good idea is to get an MXR 10 band EQ and place it after this pedal and boost the mids. Doing this with both the Rhoads version and a Modern Stock Yellow Model, you will hear a clear and distinct difference.

I compared the insides of this pedal and it's polka dot predecessor to the modern stock Yellow model and even that is completely different. Several different components like the Germanium diodes and the main IC chip are different from Yellow version. The PCB board that all of the components are wired to are also completely different. It's what the pedal does to an already overdriven amp that stands it apart from the modern yellow version.

When they announced the pedal originally I was afraid it was going to be limited and sure enough it was. Very very happy the Rhoads family convinced MXR to bring a new version out, this one in fact, that will be a standard production model that isn't limited. That was the best choice in my humble opinion and honors RR far more than a limited release. Another pedal they should consider doing this with is his Wah pedal...very distinct bright Wah sound.

For those wondering, the Output and Distortion should be maxed on this pedal for Rhoads' live tone. The gain on your amp should be set low...likely just above simple overdrive.
