Dual-ear Headworn Dynamic Hypercardioid Microphone with 7.2' Cable and XLR Connector - Speech and Vocals, Black

The Audio-Technica Pro 8HEx frees your hands while making your voice sound great. If you play an instrument that monopolizes your hands during performance, you'll love the freedom this headworn mic affords you, how its hi-energy neodymium element imparts crisp articulation to your vocals, and how effectively its hypercardioid polar pattern rejects unwanted off-axis sound. The Pro 8HEx' stealthy headband and cushy support pads provide a positive, comfy fit for those marathon sets, and its flexible pivot-mount mic boom may be mounted left or right. Freedom, comfort and great sound - that's the Audio-Technica Pro 8HEx.

Pro8He Headworn Mic

By Gary from Butler, PA
Music Background: Various bands and solo performance

I received my Pro8He (XLR) yesterday morning. My son helped me try it out today with his Allen and Heath CQ-12T and a pair of QSC K10s. I am very satisfied with my first impression of the sound quality. I'm sing solo with an acoustic guitar. My experience has been with shure SM57's and SM58's. As far as sound, this headworn seems to be an acceptable alternative. I'm uncertain, however, how long the chord, boom, and cheek pads will last. The chord especially looks to be very light, thin, and fragile. Time will tell. I will have to purchase a mute switch because with this headset, I cannot just turn away for a cough or sneeze.

I won't be disposing of my reliable shure hardware, yet.

Singing mic

Works and adjusts well. Happy I purchased it

Very satisfied!

By Bruce

I needed a hands free, stand free, feedback resistant mic for my one man band setup. I was using a Shure beta 58A and wanted something of similar quality in the same price range. The Audio —Technica pro 8HEx exceeded my expectations. It is clear sounding, lightweight, comfortable and feedback resistant. I also am able to easily use it with my XVive wireless system without the transmitter getting in my way because it can connect to the attached cable instead of being at the base of the mic.
I'm very happy with this purchase and would highly recommend this product!

Great Headset mic for Drummers or any where wired setup works

By Dan N. from Bonneau, SC

I got this one for my drummer to use for some vocal parts. I don't need the wireless feature since he isn't moving around much, and I appreciate the small pickup pattern on this mic to help isolate bleed-over.

Once I received it, I realized the headset padding is designed so you can wear this multiple ways. It doesn't have to sit in a specific orientation like other units I've used in the past. This is important if you use over-the-ear IEMs. Of course, it gets a bit of drum bleed, but it's not overly bad, and the flexible boom arm makes it easy to position the mic close to the mouth, making the bleed a non-issue when picking up the vocal.

The only additional thing that would be nice to have is an on/off switch to mute it when not in use, so it doesn't always need to be muted on the console. While this is fairly common for mics not to have a switch, I ended up adding an inline cord with a switch for this purpose. This is great for sending to different Front-of-House (FOH) mixers as it allows the user to control the mute instead of the FOH engineer having to worry about it.

Great, inexpensive option.

By Michael S. from CLIFTON, ME
Music Background: 58 year percussionist/drummer. I've only recently begun singing, so this a good first vocal mic for me.

For an inexpensive mic, it has good sound and output strength. Very happy with the purchase.

Not bad for the price and weight

By Hans M. from AUSTIN, TX
Music Background: Keyboardist, guitarist, synthesist, banger of pots and pans.

This Audio-Technica headworn microphone is good enough for spoken word, podcasts, Zoom meetings, communications, vocooders and similar applications where really clean vocals aren't an issue. I can't recommend it for singing, however, because it doesn't have very good dynamic range, it's prone to clipping, and it picks up too many extraneous noises.

When it comes to wearing, it has some shortcomings too. It is difficult to wear with over-the-ear headphones because the microphone's headset pads go on your temples - basically right where over-the-ear headphones go. Plus, the headband is not adjustable, so people with larger- or smaller-than-average heads will probably find this microphone difficult to use, if they can use it at all.

Hands-free mic

By Sweetwater Customer from Yankton, SD

As a BINGO caller I wanted a mic that would move with me, rather than be stationary, so my voice would be heard no matter which direction I was looking, and it had to work with the PA system in the hall, as well as my TC Helicon audio device, not needing phantom power. It does this just fine, after I adjusted the gain on the audio device, and is comfortable for the 2 hours I wear it. The sound quality is just fine; I would only seek one more feature: a cough switch, as I have to remember to cover the mic before coughing or clearing my throat. It makes my BINGO calling a lot eaier!

For the price, you can't go wrong with this microphone! It worked exactly as expected with excellent sound quality. I would definitely purchase again.

Great option for solo entertainer

By Joe G.
Music Background: Seasoned entertainer

Bought this to try out. My solo setup is very simple and this has worked out very well. I have used mainly Shure and Sennheiser the last ten years or so, but the sound quality of this microphone is perfect for my application.

Simple and Effective

By Sweetwater Customer

I bought 8 of these for a "Readers Theater" group that had been using inexpensive wireless head-worn mics that continually caused problems due to battery failures, electronic interference, or loss of radio connection. Sometimes a cable connection is the best way to go to eliminate those problems, and these PRO 8HEx are just what we needed to get through a performance without wireless issues. They are lightweight and comfortable to wear, and the gain before feedback is great. Off-axis rejection is also very good. The included windscreens do a fine job of handling breath noise and pops. If you don't have to move around a lot when performing, these mics are an excellent choice.

Works for me

By Travis Y. from WYANDOTTE, MI
Music Background: 20+years drums and live experience

I play drums while doing main death metal vocals, so I wanted to go the headset route as opposed to counting on a boomed mic. I'm happy with the results. This is the first mic headset I've owned and it definitely does what I need it to. I would purchase again for sure.
Shoutout to my sales engineer Zack Davidson for always making sure my gear is to my liking!

Great, budget friendly mic!

By Michael M. from Pesotum, IL

You can't beat this mic for $. It's no Shure but it does a fine job as long as yo have an EQ to shape it. It's pretty thin.

Great value for the price

By Carl
Music Background: Drumming for a few decades

Sound is pretty good for the price. The next price step up is steep! I use it to sing while playing drums, and it works well so far. Only downside I have found is how tight the band is on your head, a complaint I read about from others. It can give you a headache if worn for a long time. Other than that, I can recommend it.

What a great purchase

By Sal P. from Phoenix, AZ

I bought this to use for some live music performances, and some speaking videos I make.
I am a Cajon player, play guitar, and do vocals. I found myself turning from the mic too often, and decided to try a wired headset microphone. Well, I am glad I did.
As for speaking, this was also an excellent match.
You will have to adjust your PA or mixer, but when don't you have to do that.
Overall, a great buy, I highly recommend this product.
Also, the headset, takes a little getting use to, but don't give up on it.

Audio Technica headset

By Bray D. from Va
Music Background: Senior musician

It's ok for the price but had half the volume of my beta shure.I fixed that by purchasing the ART mic preamp which also doubles for a direct box for my acoustic.Eventually I will probably do an upgrade. This would be good for public speaking and the aerobic instructors.

Great mic for brass players for online teaching and telematic rehearsing.

By Paul V.

I am a trombonist and I bought this mic for online teaching and rehearsing in telematic environments. I can wear it comfortably while using many different sets of headphones including my Sennheiser HD600. It picks up my voice very clearly but picks up very little of my instrument which if of course mic'ed separately. This way the gain on the voice can be perfect and not compromised by the much louder instrument. No gain adjustments between speaking and playing. Positioning the mic perfectly can take a bit of work to figure out and it might not look as nice as other options but functionally it is so nice!

Mic Sounds Fine, But Very Uncomfortable

By Sweetwater Customer

I don't review things much, but I had to return this headset mic after a few hours of configuring it. The mic sounded good enough running through my Scarlett, but it gave me a headache after only about 10 minutes of wearing it.

If it isn't clear from the photo, the headset foam pads squeeze on your temples. The pads are not thick enough to facilitate this either and it became clear that I would not be able to use this headset for a show. If this kind of wearable doesn't bother you, then it seems like a solid microphone for the price.

Pleasantly Surprised!

By Michael from Pennsyltucky
Music Background: Professional, many years ago. Week-end warrior, now.

I am NOT a drummer, but I can play basic beats. For the time, I have had to fill in behind the kit and we had no room for a mic stand.

Enter my need for a head-worn microphone.

I didn't want to go wireless because of the expense (I'm not staying behind the kit) and the typical wireless head-aches, I figured I'd give this a shot.

I use Audio-Technica in my home studio and I trust their sound quality, but I was thinking: "A hundred dollars? This'll be rinky-dink, but it will 'get us through'."

Well, this might be the best $100 I've spent with Sweetwater. The tone was not "tin-y" and the response was rather surprising.

I was sure I was going to be disappointed, but if I have need of another head-worn microphone in the future, this will be my first option.

Audio-Technica never disappoints!

By Davin K. from Denver, Colorado
Music Background: I've been playing the drums for 50 years and have been in the same band for 46 of those years. I also play keyboards/synthesizers and am an arranger and audio engineer. I collect and program/play vintage analog synths. I have a home studio in Denver where

Back in 1977-78 I bought what at the time was the only headset mic Shure made. That mic lasted nearly 28 years - and I'm a singing drummer so it got smacked a few times. When it finally bit the dust I began researching current headset mics and being familiar with Audio-Technica's quality I chose the PRO 8HEx. I didn't want a wireless mic, just good ol' XLR. Sadly that one was destroyed after just two years in an unfortunate Speaker cabinet vs. Gravity confrontation. This time around - because it was on sale - I opted for a Nady headset. BIG MISTAKE. That unit terminated in a "mini XLR" plug which then had to be connected to an XLR adapter to accommodate a standard XLR cable to get to my mixer. Well, the XLR adapter was a hunk of metal about 4 inches long and weighed about 1/4 lb and when added to the weight of the mini XLR plug and the XLR plug on the end of the regular cable was pretty heavy, and in their inimitable wisdom the folks at Nady didn't even include with the headset enough cable to even reach the ground!! Meaning you had all this metal hanging from the side of your head with the only solution being cramming all of it in your pocket unless you wanted a pendulum of metal swinging from your headset. CHEAP, CRAPPY MOVE ON YOUR PART, NADY!!

The point of that diatribe was that almost immediately I ordered another Audio-Technica headset because it is superior in every way and is downright cheap....I mean, well, inexpensive! The boom is easily adjustable and stays in place. It's got great level and is whisper quiet. It is so light you forget you're wearing it and because it is designed to fit around the back of your head it is completely out of the way. It doesn't squash your head or pinch and it comes with two different sized foam windscreens that slide over the mic element. It has a sensible length of cable and it just doesn't have a lot of mass or unnecessary bulk, and when you're playing energetic progressive rock and twisting and turning to reach gongs and chimes and whatnot AND singing, the last thing you need is a bunch of weight clamped to your head. Well done Audio-Technica! Love your turntables, love your microphones!

Great headset

Great wired headset. Good sound. Very good for instrument players/vocalist. We use these for practice sessions. Durable, most headsets are designed not to be seen and are pretty delicate and costly to repair. These are priced right and perfect for the job.

By Scott from Northeast
Music Background: Longtime guitar vocals in bands, solo, duo's...

Better than ever

By Sweetwater Customer

I have an older version of this headset(20 years!) The new one seems much stronger, less feedback. I use it with the sennheiser wireless wort for an inexpensive very good wireless headset. I wear it round my neck with the mic angled up to my mouth. That way I can back off by turning my head away when I'm screaming.

Works great for keyboard

By Chuck G. from Havre De Grace, MD
Music Background: Guitar,Bass,Vocals,Keys,Explorer for 50.5yrs.

I bought this for my Juno and its mic/vocoder input. It only has a 7' XLR cable. The Juno has 1/4" so I got a 5ft XLR female to 1/4" balanced cable to augment length and make the connection. You can use a line transformer adapter but it will really stick out and put extra weight and stress on the input jack. The mic performs well and rejects outside noise better than many handheld dynamics. It came with a small/large windscreen or pop-filter, two small cable to headset clips, and a clothing/belt clip to take the strain off the cable especially if using while walking around when using a long mike cable. I took one star off because although the boom wire is adjustable, which is real nice, and you can pivot the boom ratchet style, the headset is not adjustable at all. It's also a tight fit with too much tension unless your a headbanger in which it should stay on nicely, or an acrobatic drummer.I wear it around my neck and pivot the boom and wire accordingly. This also allows me to come into or out of the mike by nodding my head to be able to "ride the mic" like a handheld.

Great For Wireless also

By David from NW Missouri
Music Background: Church sound specialist.

I have a wireless transmitter that only works with dynamic mics and has an XLR connector. Primarily it is intended for handheld microphones but I wanted a headset mic to try with it. This is the only one I have found and it is great. It has enough frequency range to be great for vocals and because it has a cardioid pattern, it is less sensitive to ambient sounds.
The only drawback I have found is having to roll back the low frequencies because of proximity effect, but apart from that it is outstanding.

Free to Be Me

By Derek O. from Springfield, Massachusetts
Music Background: Actor/Musician

Great little headset mic! In researching it, I knew there were complaints about having to EQ and the rather short XLR cable length. EQ is something you'd have to address with most mics, so that wasn't an issue for me. The shortness of the cable isn't so much an issue as is the cable gauge size and weight compared to that of a typical XLR cable. The clip only does so much to offset the weight of the heavier XLR. I'll have to come up with a different rigging system in order to feel like I'm not being pulled. But hey, what should I expect without the body pack at this low price? LOL! It's just me, so I had no atypical feedback issues, just the usual ringing out for soundcheck. Big thanks to Brandon Eden, my Sales Engineer. He's an integral part of the reason I buy with such confidence from Sweetwater.

Good mic for a keyboard player

By Vince from NYS
Music Background: Weekend Pro

This mic reproduces my voice the way I like it and makes it easier to play keys and sing without having to look for my microphone. The reason I gave it a 4.5 and not a 5 is because I wish the boom was maybe about a half inch longer, but l can just move it up a little further on my head and it works fine. Overall it's an excellent mic for the money and for my purposes.

Drummer/singer

By Sweetwater Customer

Been using it for a couple of weeks and I am really impressed. It's a quality piece of equipment that does exactly what it says it will. I haven't gigged with it yet, but I use it while practicing daily. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it's really visible. But less visible mics were a lot more expensive. I would recommend this to any drummer who also wants to sing without have their playing interfered with. This mic does the job and sounds great.

Nice mic for scratch track and talkback duties

By Joe C. from Greater LA area
Music Background: serious amateur audio engineer, producer, studio owner

I've been using the Audio-Technica PRO8HEx through a Cloudlifter to record scratch tracks & as a talkback microphone. I am using it in a fully treated room with good placement which has as much if not more to do with getting a good take from a microphone.

That being said, I have been very please with the results that I am getting with it. The comfort and ability to adjust mic position is good. The quality of the takes I'm getting with this mic are good enough to keep if the performance are up to snuff coming out of the chute. The Hypercardioid pattern gives decent rejection of acoustic guitar during scratch takes.

I am very pleased with the purchase. I would buy it again, and I would recommend it to a friend. It's good value for the $'s.

Microphone is good but the headset is poor

By Anjalika S. from Gaithersburg, MD
Music Background: Hobysist semi pro, making own tracks and recordings for solo performances in Washington DC.

I needed a microphone that plugs direct to the Yamaha PSRS950 keyboard that has the mic connection at the back. The cord is too short. the other problem is that the headset has very little expansion space. My adjusting piece broke within a month. If not for the headset, the microphone quality is very good. The rigid head band makes it uncomfortable and tight. I don't particularly like this and was disappointed.

Bought this for our drummer because of cymbal cross talk in vocals. It solved that problem nicely. Sound tech felt it was a little mid rangy, but had no problem compensating with eq on the board. Decent mic; especially good hands-free solution for noise environment where noise and vocal can be spatially differentiated.

Coffee House Wonder

By Fred L. from West Des Moines, Iowa
Music Background: Working singer/musician

Apart from a too-short cord, this head-worn mic is terrific. I waited quite awhile (about a year and a half) to write this review because I wanted to be able to give an honest, time-tested on the job opinion. I couldn't be happier. After dozens and dozens of one-man-band coffee house gigs, I can give this little guy a hearty thumbs up. The only reason I wasn't totally blown away is because of the short cord (10 feet would be perfect for me, as I run the mic through a TC Helicon Harmony G XT). And having my hands free to play and turn pages once in awhile is such a treat. As always Sweetwater's assistance and advice were indeed sweet.
