Sound of the gods themselves

By Tony M. from IRVINE, CA

Play it straight, or thru a pedal board, it just always sounds good. Takes a while to break in tho, I now have bass and treble at noon, but maybe had treble at 3-4 for a while. It warms up over time, and I just never mess with it. Ive had other amps where I spent half my time turning knobs.

The reverb is great, the tremolo is OK, but I may replace the potentiometer eventually. There isnt much variance in the knob but it sounds great, and has a 60s surf guitar vibe.

I generally run it with a tweed type pedal and blues driver, which are generally always on.

You can play clean, dirty blues, gritty fuzz, trip psychadelic, it just does it all. Very full sounding.

I record, mix, master music, sometimes for other people. Some amps I have, I wish they had 3 mids knobs, because the 800hz, 1500hz etc is driving me nuts. Even tried an eq pedal on some. I haven't really needed an eq pedal with this one, mostly just because I like the sound. Definitely not boxy, possibly slightly scooped in the mids. It doesn't have a mids knob fyi.

I play a Gretsch electromatic and this thing can go really low and warm, to sparkling highs if you need it. If Im recording in to a mix I'll set it more high and shrill than Id prefer, but that just helps the mixing part.

I cant speak for heavy metal or crazy effects. But blues, grunge, fuzz, doom metal,
Stoner rock, I have zero complaints, 5 star.

I replaced the tubes at some point because I have a pedal that blows tubes I think, other than that its stock.

This amp replaced my AC-30 TB

By Tim F. from Seattle, WA
Music Background: Loves Radiohead, the Smiths, Stone Temple Pilots, and Neko Case

I absolutely love this amp. For many years I struggled to find the right replacement for my Vox AC30. I am not playing live shows anymore so I wanted a guitar tone that sounded warm without having to play at such a loud volume. I tried attenuators, lots of different pedals and nothing seemed to work for my situation. I read the glorious reviews about this amp before buying a used one. I'll hate to say it but I don't even miss my AC30 even though I paid twice as much for that amp. This little guy still gets loud but it breaks up at a lower volume. It pairs well with pedals. It's simple and sounds great.

Great until it haywire with insane noise

By Mike S. from Seattle
Music Background: Decades of rocking the continents

Overall like clean tones and low end with 12 inch speaker. Tremolo and reverb: replaced with Strymon Flint, as not great. BUT, a few years into it, it's making INSANE noises with tubes glowing wildly like possessed demons and hissing like an exorcism. Not happy about this. Not for the price. Not for the light use. Not looking forward to the time, energy, cost of the repair. Never had an amp do this in 40 years of amps.

I have a 1964 brown face and it is a great amp - it doesn't have reverb so I thought I would buy one of these thinking it would be great - it did sound good but it shut down a couple of weeks after I received it - Sweetwater sent me a new one and it lasted a year or so and it shut down - I had it fixed (transformer) spent about $ - it worked for about a year smelled something and no sound - Had to get out the 1964 - can't afford to keep fixing these cheaply wired new ones

Ditch the Speaker

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Hobbyist

While I love the tweed makeover on this Princeton, I found the 12" Cannabis Rex a disappointing addition. The low end was horrible and it just lacked the original Princeton tone and feel. I replaced it with a 10" Jensen and it is again sounding like a Princeton amp. If you want the awesome tweed look of this amp, ditch the 12" for the $ Jensen. With the Jensen this would be a solid 5.

Mostly excellent

By Nathaniel

This amp has exactly the sound quality I'd hope for from a 65 Princeton--clear but warm--and it quickly outshone the Vox AC10 I'd been using. I love the 6V6s. The bias trem is, as they say, a bit subtle, to the point where I occasionally use a trem pedal instead, but most of the time its amplitude is ample.
I do think having the 12" speaker on this one really makes a difference for the bass, and the tweed is gorgeous.
The one knock I have against it is that sometimes it's glitchy. The sound will cut out almost completely, or sound like it's coming through a toilet paper roll. I've taken it to an amp repair guy who specializes in tube amps, and he checked all the connections and the snugness of every tube, and he couldn't figure it out (couldn't actually recreate the problem). So I guess it's some bad wiring in there, or a weak solder that just gets shaken out of whack periodically. It's very irritating when it happens, but only happens about 2% of the time, and the rest of the time it's incredible, so here we are.

Wonderful amp!

By Dean from Virginia
Music Background: Hobbyist

My wife bought this for me back in 2018 for Christmas. I figured out that she had purchased an AC-30 but I explained that I was really wanting a Princeton so she returned it and bought this. Also, this was before we were shopping at SW but shortly after we made the switch and we could not be happier; Masson is extremely helpful when it comes to spending our money on gear for me :)

Anyway, this amp lives in the house but I have been using my Waza Air there these days so I think the Princeton will be moved out to the studio. Every time I plug into it I'm reminded that I have the perfect amp already and that I don't need to look for something else; 301 4+ star reviews and counting.

Clean Heaven

By Ken J. from SAN ANGELO, TX

This amp really shines with a telecaster. The clean tones up around 5 are very balanced and just start to break up a tiny bit. Surprising as I read that this amp is too loud for home use. But if you play mostly clean and don't need to force the amp to natural breakup then this is perfect. It does sound great when it gets into the dirt, but here is where it is too loud for the home. I prefer a pedal for the dirt anyway, and so far it loves the Blues Driver. Still not convinced of the Cannibus Rex, but have not tried it with others…yet. The tremolo and vibrato sound great also if kept at reasonable levels..too much of a good thing sort of deal. I have a butterscotch blonde telecaster that seems to have been made for this box. Never thought of the aesthetics of an amp or guitar, but at first glance they appeared to be made for one another. 45 years of playing to my dog, I have never thought of an amp as beautiful. Doesn't matter ultimately...but thought it worth mentioning that this amp is very well built and finished. The wife was never a fan of the ugly black box in the corner. Thanks also to the great staff of Sweetwater who are always polite and helpful. I actually got a phone call a few days after the order that was not a marketing call per se…just a nice conversation that reminded me I could return it without question if not satisfied an that they had a 2 year warranty. First purchase from them of many to come. Highly recommend this amp.

Great Fender Amp

By Scott

Pretty surprising little amp. Sounds very very good up loud in a rock band with 12" closed back cab and distortion pedals, sounds great quiet in a restaurant setting with just a touch of compression. I had a Deluxe not long ago and I prefer the tone of this amp . It ain't cheap tho ...

End up with the mod shop version. I do not fully understand the mod control on the back. Not sure if it's a mid range control or a tone control. The description from the mod shop just not clear at all, they give some description that's just not clear what it does?

Perfect amp for me

By Allen from Tennessee

I wanted an amp with great clean tone at low volume to pair with my AVII '51 Tele and this amp delivered. I knew the Princeton was a great amp, but the standard speaker lacked range & definition. The '65 Princeton w/ 12" Eminence speaker solves that problem, and the lacquered tweed covering is gorgeous. The amp stays clean at higher volumes than expected and tone quality doesn't suffer dramatically at lower volumes; all which was exactly what I was looking for.

Great Amp!

By David M. from Chattanooga, TN

I wanted an amp with a lot of head room that could cut through the mix at small/mid-size venues. This is sound check at its first outing. No drums at this show, but I know it would hang. Love the tone. The tremelo & a touch of reverb are so sweet. It was a big investment for me, but I think it's worth it.

Search YouTube and you will find many skilled guitarist sounding fantastic through a Princeton. Once this beauty arrived, I plugged in a Strat and realized how much practice I really need to do. This amp has a very clear transparent tone that is rich and full of harmonic detail. Once you play with it and let it ring, it shines through with great feel and shimmer. Without coloring the tone with effects, this amp will challenge you to become a better player. The digital age has much to offer, but becoming skilled at an instrument like guitar feels very rewarding when it is just the pure sound of the guitar coming through the speaker. I love and appreciate several genres of music. The sound of a singing Strat through a tube amplifier should humble any guitarist. This amp is a keeper.

Awesome amp

By Josh from AUSTIN, TX

I'll join the hundreds of other positive reviewers on here and say that this is a great amp. I had played the version in a store a while back (different speaker) and could not get the sound of it out of my head. It looks super classy with the tweed and black panel too. Saw a discount on the Sweetwater version and had to pull the trigger. The reverb is lush, the tremolo adds a nice pulsing effect to the sound, and the cleans are warm and full. I primarily use this for home playing and the occasional jam session. At home I generally keep it around 4 on the volume which gives a great clean sound, and get overdrive from pedals. In particular my Boss SD-1 and Golden Boy sound perfect with this amp. Note if you are a home player, you will not get this thing to distort at home volumes. You will need a pedal for that.

Side note, I saw in some places online that the Cannabis Rex is too "muffled" or bassy sounding and takes a long time to "wear in" before it sounds good. I think mine sounded great out of the box, not muffled at all. Yes it is bass-heavy, I turned my bass nob down to 1 to resolve that. But aside from that it sounds amazing already, so if it sounds better after wear-in time then I'm in for the long haul with this amp.

Only two cons I can think of. The reverb doesn't really do the "drip" thing unless you have the treble set above 6/7. And the reverb can get a bit overwhelming at high settings (maybe due to the bassiness of the speaker). But I like that it has that range. The other con is the tremolo is on the weak side. Even at full max intensity it won't get super choppy. I don't mind because I just like adding a nice pulse to the sound which this does perfectly. I have heard there is a mod you can do to make the trem choppier so might be an option for those looking for that sound.

Bottom line, this is a great amp and you will not regret going for it!

This is not a good amp

By Daniel C. from Pearl River, NY

This amp is OK at best. I have a hard time getting a good sound out of it, hard enough that it was quickly replaced with other fender style amps. I swapped the speaker out and that did seem to help. The amp does look fantastic, but is very heavy.

Classic Tube amp is The Prince of Tone.

By Jay from Mission Viejo California
Music Background: Piano, Bass, Guitar. Thanks to Cameron for all the help!!!

This special Sweetwater version has a 12" upgraded speaker that sounds great. It has a tube driven deep reverb and signature vibrato that Fenders are known for. The vintage phase inverter tube circuit that drives two 6V6 output tubes delivers plenty of rich harmonics, and breaks up at lower levels, it sings. The 5AR4 tube rectifier adds natural compression that is part of the tube sound, and touch sensitivity these amplifiers are known for. Still has plenty of clean headroom, just by adjusting the tone controls. Although 12 watts may not sound impressive, don't underestimate this little brute; this amp is really loud past about 4 on the volume, part of which is the higher efficiency of the upgraded speaker, and also mainly due to the tube technology. It will easily play a small club or venue, but is not too much for home practice. If you have a studio, this is a must have amplifier. It can do everything from Folk to rock, and has a sound that is associated with many styles such as classic rock, surf, jazz, blues, country, folk, and some contemporary as well.
It is also a very good pedal platform for you favorite effects. The tweed covered pine cabinet, and the upgraded speaker are both Sweetwater exclusives and a nice touch to the Princeton in appearance and performance. I have played my Gibsons and Epiphones through the Prince-of-Tone, all have humbuckers, and they sounded great. If you have a Stratocaster, or a Tele, well, this amp is right at home with them too. The Princeton has a big brother and a daddy: The Deluxe Reverb, and The Twin Reverb. They both offer two channels and more power(22 & 85 Watts). If you have not discovered the world of tube amplifiers and their legendary sound and dynamic tones that you can get from them, Fender line of Blackface re-issue amplifiers a great place to start. They are faithful reproductions of the original pre-CBS circuits using more modern and reliable components, but of the same original values to retain their character. Fender has over 75 year of experience in the tube type instrument amplifier business and is well known for their quality and durability. If you are primarily looking for a little more British sound in a small practice tube amp, the Fender Blues Jr, or Deluxe are fine choices.

Sweetwater exclusive is Made in USA not Mexico like the rest of this range of amps. Not that MIM is a bad thing, MIM is 10 times better than made is Asia amps.

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Part time professional musician.

It's been a long time since I've had an amp that I can just plug straight in and be very happy with the sound of whatever guitar I plug in. This is that type of amp. I use it in my studio and for practice along side a Marshall Studio 15 from the 80's. These two amps give me every tone I need mic'd up and ready to go. When I need more gain I add a boost or drive pedal. I think the 12" speaker allows the ability to lower the bass control, effectively giving more clean headroom and a louder amp. I'm hoping being Made in USA, this will be an amp I'll use trouble free for many years like my Old Champ and made in England Marshall Studio 15 and Marshall 2554. Longevity of an amp is a huge deal when you are relying on your amp to give you the tone and feel you have worked your lifetime to achieve. Next up, finding a mid power amp for playing live that gives me the same kind of tone and playability.

Great amp, but needs different speaker

By Tom P. from Soputh Joisey
Music Background: Varied

I recently purchased this amp and it's a great rig. Only comment is the Cannabis Rex speaker it comes with does not be=ring out the true vintage fender voicing. I upgraded the speaker to a Jensen P12R and it sounds glorious. The C-Rex speaker sounds really dull compared to the typical Fender chime you would expect from a Blackface Princeton

I've gone through many different amps and this thing outperforms all of them. I was using a Blues jr before I got the Princeton and I haven't used the Blues Jr since. Very good Tube Amp

By MOKSHYADANANDA M. from Richmond, TX

So far, I really like the tone and overall performance for this amp. It's a completely different experience and tone running my pedals through the Princeton vs the Boss Katana I was using. Not saying that Boss Katana is not good (it's an awesome amp for the price), but Princeton's tone works great for me. Minor call out is the Power button on the back and also missing Standby buttons. Besides that, wonderful sound and so far I have been able to use it in my bedroom for practice.

Sweet Little Amp

By Steve from So Cal Coastal

I've had this amp a week and have only had a chance to play it four times up to this writing. I'm really diggin' the heck out of it! I've mostly been playing my main guitar, a 1996 Fender USA Lonestar Strat. I also played a PRS with Humbuckers through it too. It sounds great to me. This comes with a 12 in. Eminence Cannabis Rex speaker which to my ears is a good fit so far. The speaker only has a about 4 to 5 hours on it, so it is not completely worn in yet but fresh out of the box it was sounding very good to me. Time will tell of course but I'm off to a good start with it. I have several other Fender and Fender style amps that I gig with, the main one being a Tone King Imperial 20th. We mic everything so I could easily use this amp as well. I've been playing it level 5 for clean at the edge and 7 for some great break-up. I'm really enjoying my honeymoon phase with this. It's nice little amp with great sound right out of the box.

Almost a perfect amp

By Sweetwater Customer from Vermont

Did a lot of searching for my ideal tone after playing on a Vox AC10 for a long time. Wanted something much warmer and with low-end oomph in a small package. Finally figured out it had to be 6V6s, and I wanted the reverb and on-board bias trem, so Princeton of course. Briefly had a '68 and loved that Bassman tonestack on the reissue but it had malfunctions, as so many do, and had to go back.
Took a chance (risky, I know) on another Fender reissue with this '65 Sweetwater special, hoping the 12" speaker would get me back some of the low-end I'd lose in going from a '68 to a '65, and it definitely does. Big bass coming out of this thing, especially with an LP, and I only have it at about 5.5, with the treble rolled back to maybe 4. The tweed is beautiful, and the tone is every bit as warm and present as I could've hoped (using an a/b/y switcher to do lots of side-by-side comparisons with the Vox). My wife says the Vox sounds like a speaker, and the Princeton sounds like it's coming from all around the room.
People say the '65, especially with a 12" speaker, has lots of headroom, but this amp wants to break up at moderate volumes, and sounds great doing it. The reverb is perfect, and the tremolo is that sweet, organic, bias-based sine wave I wanted. My only gripe (which is many people's gripe, apparently), and the reason it's 4.5 stars instead of 5, is that the trem is still very subtle at its max intensity, and doesn't register at all from 1-5 on the dial. It also doesn't get particularly slow. But it sounds so good that I am okay with it. If I want a deeper, slower trem I can always just switch on my Basic Audio Throbby.
Overall absolutely love this amp. Have yet to test how well it does with various pedals but I'm keeping the Vox as a perfect pedal platform regardless.

Amazing amp

By Ray K. from New Jersey

Have the Princeton Reverb amp for a week now.It is an absolutely amazing amplifier. It sounds awesome by itself or with pedals.I've been watching it for about a year and am so glad I bought it. And, it is a breeze to bring along to a jam session. It sure beats lugging a bigger amp that is not needed for the jam. It has plenty of volume also. Most times I don't go more than 3 on the volume knob. And as usual Mike Arango always provides exceptional service. It never ceases to amaze me how fast you guys get the goodies to us.

Wonderful Fender amp

By Steve W. from Nashville
Music Background: Guitarist and Multi instrumentalist, live and studio experience. Studio owner and producer. I now write and produce music for multimedia.

This is a great amp. It is no doubt a thoroughbred. I would give it 5 stars except for the speaker. The way it breaks up at loud volume (over 7) is not usable for me. I tested unplugging the stock speaker and hooking up a Scumback speaker to the amp in a cab I built of oak plywood. The thing was like a totally different animal. It sounded as good as anything I've ever heard. I think a stock Jensen 12 ( like what's in the Deluxe) would probably sound much better in than the Eminence speaker. The tone controls act like the old black faces but the reverb sounds much darker and deeper than the vintage Fenders. The tremolo is fine. The amp is perfect for distortion pedals at crunch or nose bleed. I found a compressor was unnecessary due to the natural compression you get from the tubes. Having a rectifier tube (tube type power supply) makes this amp sing. I am pleased with the amp as a whole and have used it on a blues project with great success.

Non-existent Tremolo

By Sweetwater Customer from Downstate Illinois
Music Background: A little bit of all modern music. Been playing and giging for 45+ years.

I like the amp. My wife surprised me with it. It it what I'd expect from a Princeton with a 12. Sonically it does it's job well; the extra low-end from the 12 is nice. However the tremolo is barely noticeable with the intensity at 10. If I want good tremolo its'll have to be with a pedal. The reverb is fine. Also the slip cover is for a Deluxe, so it looks like a 4 year-old wearing his dad's shirt.

2 years later, and I love mine more every day

By Sweetwater Customer from Arkansas

This is a fantastic amp. I use it as the anchor in my studio tone, mixing it with high gain high saturation amps and early 60s cleaner amps. A lot more low end than from a typical Princeton too. The CR speaker took a couple months to break in but suddenly it became quite musical. It's got more power than I need but it sounds fantastic

Love it!

By Dan from OH
Music Background: Many, many gigging years.

Both solid bodies and big hollow jazz boxes beg to be plugged into this amp.
A sweet blues bite to warm, woody jazz is just a slight adjustment away on the very effective tone controls.
I'm afraid to calculate how much money I went through looking for this tone.
The 12 watts supply perfect volume for practice or stage volume. Mic it up if you need more.
(I recommend that you add another hundred bucks to your purchase price and pick up the "Sennheiser e 609 Silver Supercardioid Dynamic Guitar Microphone" to accomodate that task.)
I should have bought this amp much sooner...but then I'd have been uncomfortable sitting on that big wad of cash I would have saved!
As always, the Sweetwater crew is the best! My super sales rep David Mikautadze was out of the office at the time of purchase so the crew had its time to shine...and shine they did!

Great Customer Service and Support - Awesome Sounding Amp

By Anthony H. from Atlanta, GA

A little late on writing this review as I purchased the amp over 9 months ago. I initially purchased a demo model that I had to immedieatly send back due to a rattle/hiss playing north of '3'. I suspected it was a tube problem, but the Sweetwater team did not hesitate to ship me a brand-new amp for no extra cost. Fast forward to a few months ago, I realized that the reverb would oscillate and create a screeching feedback noise turning the knob past 5 (I had been running my line through a Blue Sky reverb pedal before so never had tested it before). Luckily, my amp was still under their 2-year warranty so I was again able to get another replacement. The current amp has no issues and is the best sounding one in my stable. I assume that my previous issues are related to defects in PCB circuitry, but the Sweetwater team was more than helpful making sure that I ended up with a solid amp. 5 stars for customer service, and 5 stars for the amp I have now.

This amp sounds good and is very articulate. The low end is just a little much with the 12'' speaker for my taste. I ended up returning it and going with a Princeton 65 Reissue.

Sold my deluxe reverb for this beast and couldn't be happier. Has the natural crunch when I need it but also the most beautiful reverb. Lows and highs shine and it's great for my studio work and live venues. I really love this amp

Great Amp!

By Sweetwater Customer from MA

Just received this wonderful version of the Princeton Reverb. I Already had a '65 PRRI with a Celestion Gold 10" speaker installed which sounds amazing. This amp sounds just as good although slightly different of course do to the 12" Eminence speaker. No need to change speakers in this beauty, it sounds very very good right out of the box across the frequency range and at all volume levels. Looks great too! Running the two amps in stereo with wet/dry trem is sublime.

Thanks to Mark Bruhn at Sweetwater who always takes the best care of me with all of my audio gear needs!

Just add a Celestion Alnico Blue and you will have arguably the best amp ever made

By Dave from Auburn, ca
Music Background: Jamming for 35 years

The stock speaker is not warm at all. To me it seems flat except on the top end which gets a little ice picky. Added a Celestion Alnico Blue and I was blown away by the full rich sound of the amp. Way more tight bottom end, full mid range and very clean crystal clear highs.

Best amp hands down.....
I also 7own a 65 Deluxe reverb reissue, 57 Custom Deluxe hand wired and Boss 100 watt MKII

Follow up review

By David F. from Troy, MI

Since November 2022, a few gigs, and dozens of rehearsal hours, I've gotten to know this amp a lot better. What really transformed the amp for me was the decision to swap out the C-Rex speaker for an Eminence GA-SC64. The C-Rex gets a lot of love, but it just wasn't for me. Too dark, and very boomy in the 200-400Hz range. The Eminence offers a much more balanced tone, and sounds amazing with dirt pedals. After installing the Eminence I absolutely love this amp, and it's become my #1. I'm one of two guitarists, and our drummer is a bit loud. The amp has plenty of clean headroom, surprisingly. No issues at all with cutting through the mix when I have to play a lead. A clean boost at the end of my signal is all that's needed. I am still giving it 4 out of 5 stars because the vibrato is too subtle, and the reverb is too big. Sometimes I want a big reverb, but for 90% of my playing I want something with less dwell. Having said all that, it's a wonderful amp, and I'm really enjoying it. With the Eminence speaker it sounds amazing. If anything happened to this one I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

Love

By Michael L. from Belgrade, ME

This amp sounds insanely good. I have a Fender 68 custom Twin Amp and a Hot Rod Deluxe IV. This amp sounds better than both and I love both of those other fender amps. If you're worried about the amp not being loud enough you'd be mistaken. This amp is loud enough for any venue with a mic. Stapleton tours arenas with 12 watt Princetons, so plenty loud enough

Gigged hard for years now

By Rick from Florida
Music Background: 71 year old semi-pro lead guitarist. Playing Fender tube amps since the 60's

Bought new from my favorite, Sweetwater, and have gigged it hard for several years now. 3 or 4 sets with basic rock/blues band 5 or 6 times a month. 12 watts my butt! This thing will hurt you. Your drummer will ask you to turn down. And the tone is so sweet I get positive remarks constantly. I do use a mic for outdoor venues just to increase the presence but turned up to 4.6 and you also won't believe 12 watts!

I’ll never sell it.

By Caleb J. from Greenville, SC

This amp hits the sweet spot. If you want the perfect amp for a wide variety of rock sounds this is it.

Frankly, after owning a dozen good quality tube amps over 28 years I'm completely floored by the sound quality coming from this amp at this price. Actually if I had paid twice this price I would still I'll be very pleased with this amp, no question.

I've owned it for about 4 years now. It does everything I want it to. I play mostly rock and some classic rock. It's ideal for jam sessions. It has the right amount of clean headroom before it starts to breaks up. It's a bit too loud for practicing at home though if you don't want to disturb others.

If you're looking for pure straight from the amp distortion at lower volumes this is not it. If you want that at higher band jamming volumes then this could be right for you. For me it strikes that right balance for throwing a few pedals at it and getting just about any typical rock sound from it. At 5-6 on the volume keeps up with the drums and has a start of a sweet overdriven tone.

I don't know why it took me so long to give the Princeton a chance. I doesn't seem to stand out among all the other options. I've been playing for 28 years and have owned about a dozen tube amps from 1x12 to 4x12 Marshals, Mesa Boogie Blue Angle, old & new, big and small Fender amps. I'll never sell this amp.

I can't comment on the comparison of the 12" speaker to a 10" but I very much like it. I used to switch out speakers on my other amps but I have no desire to try to get a different sound from this.

To sum it up… if you want a fantastic all around rock amp this should be one you seriously take a look at. It might not be perfect for you but I wouldn't be surprised if you find it to be your perfect match either.

The Amendment

By nolan
Music Background: tone chaser

I would like to amend the review I gave this amp about a week or so ago. I gave this amp a pretty bad review and after playing this amp with my pro 2 Strat I actually like it a lot better and actually if anything I think the negatives I was experiencing were coming from my les Paul and not from this amplifier. Which brings me to an even bigger point of needing to amend my praises for the gibson les Paul specifically its electronics not so much the construction and feel which I still believe is far superior to a Stratocaster. Im not sure what they did with this les Paul tribute special from a wiring standpoint but the more I think about it every amp ive played through with the exception of the vibro champ doesn't sound good and it even caused my supro to go into static distortion and not the good kind. Im not sure if gibson has cheaped out on the pickups or what but its really shame because like I said the dovetail and nitrocellulose construction is far superior to bolt on neck with polyurethane and it deserves quality pickups. The pickups of my Pro2 are much higher quality and I would venture to say the wiring is also higher quality. Anyhow the point as it relates to this amp is I should have reserved judgment until I played some quality pickups into it and this amp actually sounded really nice with my pro2 on position 4 which seems to have a nice compression and allows me to push the amp just a bit harder vs the les Paul pickups which ive stated on a review before are just too aggressive. This brings me to my only complaint really I can now say about this amp is I just wish it would break up earlier similar to how a 68 Princeton breaks up. This amp really deserves early break up as its got a good bass hit and seems to stay pretty tight in terms of not flubbing out or getting too shrill although it definitely can be that way if played to aggressively or with not great pickups. Like I said the Pro 2 seems to help tame that and give it a nice tone but the one thing its missing is that early breakup and specifically for an amp that's lauded for bedrooms and studios you would think they would make that one modification to the circuit. Ive heard this complaint about the blackface circuits before that they take forever to breakup meaning you pretty much have to crank them and then when they finally do its sort of an ugly breakup but I want to experience it myself as my favorite recordings ever were done on blackface amps and the breakup sounds incredible to me not ugly at all so as soon as I get the opportunity I'm going to try turning it up to the 8,9,10 range with my Strat and see what happens. anyhow I hope this helps and figured it would be unfair to blame an amp for the pickups in a guitar not being up to par

Does it all (with a few pedals)

By Tom from Cleveland OH

I've had my PR for a month. Has an amazing clean tone as you would expect and the reverb sounds fantastic. It takes pedals really well and absolutely screams with my Friedman BE OD. Sweet spot is around 6 to 8 and it gets some solid bottom end. Glad I pulled the trigger with the help of my sales engineer Alan Moon!

Best amp I have ever owned

By Chris L. from Milwaukie, OR
Music Background: some gigging, lots of recording

I love this amp. Best one I have ever used. I can (with a pedal or two) obtain any sound I want. Running straight into the amp, it is what a Fender amp should be. Pristine cleans, crunch when cranked, massively adjustable. The reverb is a winner - Easy to dial in the preferred reverberation. The tremolo is also excellent. I have parked my tremolo pedal and now use this one. As for sound, it is amazing how loud 12 watts is. It cuts through the mix and I am heard in a band.
What's not to love? All I can say is I should have purchased one sooner.

So Sweet!

By STEVEN M. from ALEXANDRIA, VA

I honestly wasn't sure what I'd think about the tweed covering. When I first took it out of the shipping container, it reminded me more than a bit like something I would find in my grandfather's attic. Then my girlfriend went "Ooooo! That's so pretty!" and it started to grow on me. Actually, it does look very nice and fits the mood of the amp.

As far as the amp itself:

It is nearly dead silent at idle. The only time I get any sort of static or noise out of it is when I turn up the tremolo and there is a slight rhythmic static. The reverb is really nice with a broad range. Up around 7 or higher and it is a very distinct effect that I would only use for some very particular purpose in a song. It is also very different than the typical reverb effects. Down around 3 or so and it isn't really noticeable that it is an added feature, rather it just seems very natural. Even "clean" I'd almost always use it at least a little. The tremolo is much more subtle. Even all the way up it doesn't have the distinct feel of an effect but does add to the overall feel like it is just the nature of the room or such. Like others have said, I do with the footswitch distinguished between the off and on settings...

The tone is super sweet and clean. It is somehow both "touch sensitive" and forgiving at the same time. Suddenly I feel like a much better guitarist! It can be a little touchy with strumming an E or F chord "too hard" (or "hard enough" for my other amp) when it breaks up in an unpleasant way. Maybe that will change as it breaks in a bit, or more likely it is just a difference between the digital amp and a tube one. The highs, even the high highs, are never sharp or "ice picky". Outside of the over-strumming issue the lows are very precise but strong.

On one guitar I do have a pickup that is known to be "bassy" and it can be here. Certainly those knobs where made for twisting!

Overall, I think I'm largely echoing what others have said, "It is a sweet little amp as long as you know what it is all about."

Perfect for my needs

By Taylor E. from Cary, NC

I wanted an amp that would be a good pedal platform, wasn't too loud for bedroom use, wouldn't break my back dragging it up my drummer's stairs, but could still keep up with said drummer. This Princeton Reverb satisfies all of those needs and sounds GREAT doing it. It sounds so good that I don't even really use many pedals with my AmPro II Telecaster, occasionally a Tube Screamer but that's about it. The reverb sounds great, it can really get out of hand on higher settings so I keep it at or below 3. Tremolo is great too, I'm never going crazy with trem but there's a good range of options. My only gripe after about a month of playing with it is that the power switch is a little annoying to get to if you have the amp backed up to a wall, but it sounds so good I don't really care. If you're on the fence and doubting all the hype, just buy it. You won't regret it.

Great Sweetwater Amp

Mine arrived with 2 defective tubes but after I replaced them it sings like a canary. The C.Rex is very smooth and sweet sounding.
Great amp for clean tones and jazz. The reverb is really nice. The tweed is very nicely done. No complaints.
Great amp and great price. IMO much better than the stock Princeton with a 10 inch speaker. Cheaper too.

Owned the amp 3 weeks.. playing it everyday for at least an hour. I have one gig with it so far an it was AMAZING! Speaker sounds great new and only gets better. Using strat and tele the amp sparkles without piercing your ear drums. The sweet spot for me is on the point of break up and using a pedal to get the grit. Notes blossom when you can give it some juice. So happy. Best money spent.. I also own a deluxe reverb (amazing amp too!) this amp is different .. in the most awesome way!

Not perfect, but very nice

By David F. from Troy, MI

I love me a Princeton Reverb. It's my favorite clean/slight breakup tone, and this is a good one.

Not sure I'm going to keep the Cannabis Rex. It's a little dark, and kinda boomy in the 200-400Hz range. It's fine with single coils, but I'm using an EQ pedal with humbuckers to cut some bass.

The reverb is not my favorite. Just a matter of taste, but it's too big for me, and it has a ringing metallic sound to my ears.

The vibrato is beautiful, but as others have pointed out, it lacks intensity. Even at 10 it's still not enough for me. I'm using a Strymon Flint for trem/reverb, which works well in front of this amp, so not a deal-breaker.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I don't think it takes dirt pedals all that well. It's fine with moderate overdrive. It will do Mike Campbell. Anything beyond that is a mess in my opinion. But, that's not what I bought this amp for.

Overall I'm really impressed with this amp. Mine is very quiet and I love the tone. It's plenty loud enough to hang in our band, and we play loud. It's a fine amp and reasonably priced. Looks beautiful too, in my opinion.

This little amp is great! Great Fender tone and surprisingly loud for a little 12 watt! I bought this because the Fender Deluxe Reverb I have is just a bit too loud for the smaller venues I play. As usual Will Crisp at Sweetwater made it a super easy transaction with fast shipping!

Great little amp

By Johnny from Oregon
Music Background: Experienced

Sweetwater shipped it last Friday and it got here on Wednesday.

The amp is everything I expected from Fender, the 12" C-Rex speaker is an improvement over the stock 10" Jensen, but not a huge difference, just a little better IMHO. This will be my grab and go amp for small gigs and jamming with friends. I compared it to my '65 DRRI and there is quite a bit difference in sound. The DRRI is a bit warmer with less breakup at the same volume, 4 on the Princeton is about the same as 3 on the DRRI. Reverb sounds pretty good but the tremolo is a tad weaker, no biggie. The tone controls are not as responsive as I'd like but do the job okay. Using my Les Paul it does push the amp into slight tube OD at around 3 1/2, sounds nice. I didn't like my pedals through it but that may need some tweaking. My Strat, was kind of bright sounding, and almost glassy, kind of a Mark Knopfler quality to it, might try some chicken picken' just for fun.

This is my 3rd Princeton the other two were a '51 with an 8" speaker and a '83 Princeton Reverb. Over the last 50+ years I've owned and still own several other Fender amps, an '81 Super Champ, '75 Twin, 2 Deluxe Reverbs a DRRI and a '66, a '64 Super Reverb and an old Piggy Back Bassman. Plus several other amps from other companies. I do work on my own amps but I'm not an Amp Tech, I seldom do mods and don't plan any to this amp. However, I may try swapping the phase inverter tube from a 12AX7 to a 12AT7 or 12AU7 to tame it down a little (lower gain), better for Jazz and possibly replace the reverb return tube from a 12AX7 to a 12AT7 for better control of the reverb. Otherwise it will stay stock, at least while under warranty.

On a scale of 1-10 I give this amp an 8.5 for price and value.

Worth every penny

By Bill H. from Lawrenceville, GA
Music Background: 45+ years of guitar

This is my third Princeton Reverb. The first two were mid 60's black-faces, so my expectations were high. Initially I was a little frustrated with a repetitive pop generated when the reverb and vibrato (tremolo) are on. The noise made would not be an issue on stage, but could be when recording. Sweetwater sent me a replacement that I compared and returned when I discovered that the noise was significantly reduced by simply not using the footswitch. Problem solved.
The amp is everything I expected and more. The 12" Cannabis Rex is the perfect match. You've got to crank it to get to the breakup point, but it takes pedals well. Matched with a JHS Bonzai or a TC Mojo Mojo it's magic. The reverb is lush and the tremolo is smooth and warm. For me, this is the best amp Fender has ever made.

Great Amp

By Cache F. from Portland, OR

I bought this thing about a year ago, I read the reviews on it and was convinced to pull the trigger. I am pleased to say today that it was one of the better buys I've ever made. I own quite a few different black panel fender amps, and I keep coming back to this one for just about everything. The ability to run it in its sweet spot consistently without overpowering the band and still having the capacity to keep up is pretty awesome. Perfect for bar gigs, and anything bigger they should be able to mic the thing up. I run a lightspeed to push it a little extra for my rhythm tones and a tumnus for lead stuff. Never been asked to turn down, Never been asked to turn up. run the thing right at about 5-6 and you're golden.

Definitely listen to these good reviews. I'm glad I did. Heck, I can probably sell off some of these amps at this point... that'll probably never happen though.

Great amp

By John A. from VERNON, CT

This amp lives up to all of the user accolades that I have been reading for two years now. My big concern was that it wouldn't cut it in a full band situation. I play in a country band with bass, drums, steel guitar and vocals and this amp cuts through just fine. With the volume on 5 it really opens up , something that I couldn't do with my Deluxe Reverb Reissue. The sound that I got last night with a Fender Esquire, Fulltone Full Drive, and Fulltone Plimsoul was some of the best tone that I have had with this band. It sounds great with my Les Paul and ES 335.I'm still learning what this amp can do. I'm not sure why Fender designed the amp with a detachable power cable and no standby switch but this are certainly not deal breakers. Highly recommended.

It's good. Very good.

By David H. from Plymouth, MA

I thought I would have to break it in a bit before it sounded good, but I was wrong. Very much looking forward to how it will sound when it is broken in.

Makes an excellent "practice" (quiet) amp. Much more controllable volume at the lower end than the deluxe reverb AND sounds great if you're getting your "dirt" from pedals. I haven't had a chance to really crank it yet, but verb and tremolo sound delicious (though I may do the mod to improve range on the tremolo).

Overall, I am very pleasantly surprised, and look forward to getting to know the amp better.

Still on the fence…

By Sean from San Diego, Ca
Music Background: Intermediate 3.5 years playing every day.

Nice amp, sound good with my Gibson LP's, probably better with my Strat though. Seems to handle pedals great. Using a Friedman BE-OD deluxe, and a blues driver for less dirt. Mine came out of the box with a tapping noise that goes at the same speed as vibrato when the vibrato is turned on. It's very low but I'm not sure if it's normal. Reached out to my sales representative twice, one email, and a phone call… Still haven't heard anything back.
Also I'm not really impressed with the sound over around 5.5. At 7 the lows just sound blown out (humbuckers). However full disclosure, I've only been playing for 3.5 years and maybe that's what "breakup" sounds like. If that's the case then I'm definitely not a fan of break up… Lol. But honest my other cheap Monoprice 15 W sound VERY close….. like to close considering the price. It also sounds better to my ears turned way up. Maybe I just got a bad one, or possibly something happened and shipping… Not sure. But I'm really not "blown out of the water" like a lot of these other reviews. Still deciding whether I should just return it or not…

Joey is the man and so is this fender Princeton (amp man)

This thing sounds so crystally dim that I just can't stop playing it. It's got the typical Princeton chime but it's made smoother for the higher frequencies that (to me anyways) sometimes cause discomfort. A Real Beauty

By jmabe from FL
Music Background: Enthusiast

Smaller in size than my Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb but 10 lbs heavier, still just 34 lbs which I can deal with. The nicest looking amp I own, and I'm up to 8 or 9 now. When I bought this I decided I was going to open it carefully because if I did not love it I was sending it back. Within 10 minutes I took the packaging into the garage, this amp won't be going anywhere. The sound is unique - none of my other amps including both of my Tonemasters (I have the single 12 and double 12) and my Blues Jr can produce exactly the same sound. The clean is awesome and the dirty is Fender dirty not heavy distortion. And that's fine since you can always add whatever pedals if you need that sound. What I REALLY like is the amp sounds great with the volume at 6 or 7 but doesn't blow me out of my home office and this is then only amp I own that I can turn up to 10 and it still produces quality sound that again doesn't make me feel I need to go running for ear plugs. Don't get me wrong it will handle a small to medium size gig in my opinion, just doesn't sound like loud noise coming from a box. I was already familiar with (and really like) the Cannabis Rex Patriot because I put it in my Champion 40 practice amp which ramped that little kicker up to a formidable little beast especially for the money. The included 2 button footswitch is a piece of crap in terms of look and quality but I see it as being free and I'm sure it will do the job. I highly recommend this amp if you like quality sound with simple controls. There is absolutely nothing fancy going on here.

Have I Located The Holy Grail After 30 Years?

By ChrisS from Thonotosassa, FL
Music Background: Player for 40 years, and love all kinds of music from Beethoven, to Glen Miller, to Megadeth, to Highly Suspect and lots of genres in between.

I've been a player for 40 years, and once upon a time, I acquired a small Champ tube amp in '86 and found MY sound, the one that let my musical heart grow and blossom. I ended up in Iraq 5 years later, came home, got married, and had a kid on the way. No way I could pave the way for him with an enlisted soldier's pay, so I sold off everything I had. What a horrific error that turned out to be. I spent from 1992-2022 trying to find myself musically in between marriages, divorces, deployment, etc.

I had bought a Mustang modeling amp and discovered that I kept gravitating to the Princeton models, even though I grew up learning on a 67 twin reverb and had a hankering for Champs. Something about them called to me. Then I saw this online and thought I'd get myself a retirement gift, and what a gift it turned out to be. I've taken to cranking it up to 10 and using an inexpensive attenuator to control the volume from the super hard driven tubes. It's aural heaven here in my home studio. I can play with fully driven tubes at apartment level volumes even though I live in a house in the country. I've lost some of my hearing due to gunfire and loud bikes, so being able to tame this one's power is great. It takes pedals like a champ (no pun intended) and has killer looks to boot. It's one of the best purchases I've ever made music-wise.

It's actually surpassed my old tube Champ in letting me grow and express myself. I'm preparing to cut another album at age 54 and this amp has a LOT to do with that. It opened the creative floodgates.

Rock machine

By Ken

This amp delivers the patented Fender clean tone in spades. If you want to take it into Marshall lead territory, I highly recommend the Wampler Ego compressor pedal and the Rimrock Mythical Overdrive pedal. Last, but not least, I also highly recommend adding a 1x12 extension speaker cabinet to add to the overall punch. I use the Mojotone British style 1x12 speaker cabinet loaded with a Celestion Alnico Cream speaker. None of this is cheap. But if you want the tone of the gods, you'll go for it.

Nothing but grins when this thing is turned on and I'm plugged in. There is something about the tone of this amp that just pulls my heart strings. Hadn't played a Princeton before this one but I knew I wanted one with a 12" speaker. This cannabis Rex does it justice for sure. Codie was and has been super helpful with each purchase I've made here. They have a lifelong customer for sure.

Every Guitar sounds amazing on this Princeton

By SDAztec from Ranch San Diego, CA

I have tried several amps over the years, but was never quite happy with them. If I had bought this in the beginning, even with the investment, I would have found my forever amp and not needed anything else. Amazing cleans. Takes pedals amazingly well. Have played it with P90s, HBs and single coils (Teles and Stats). Very usable reverb and tremolo. The Sweetwater edition in tweed and 12" Cannabis Rex speaker looks and sounds so good. Thanks very much to Matt Masek for helping make my decision and making the purchase so easy. Very happy with my purchase - sounds so good with my Cedarcaster, Cabronita, Strat and Wildkat.

Incredible Amp

By Raymond B. from Cheshire, CT
Music Background: Professional guitarist

I have a '64 hand wired Deluxe Reverb. This is a perfect companion to it, which is a lighter, smaller and easier to transport. The Sweetwater exclusive 12-inch speaker makes all the difference. It's worth every penny. Made in Corona California sealed the deal for me. Thanks to my Sales Engineer, Carson McClain, for recommending it.

In search of the perfect amp

By Don from Lakewood Co
Music Background: Been playing a really long time

Not much I can add to a 200+5 star reviews but let me tell you this amp exceeded my expectations. I bought a deluxe reverb about a year ago and I looked at this thing and it looked like a mini me of the deluxe but lighter and less wattage which suits me just fine. The volume knob actually goes from almost silent to rock almost any small to medium venue. The volume knob is perfectly linear no jumps of dead spots just perfect volume which sometimes is not true with other fender amps. I don't think I would've bought the standard 10" speaker version so when I saw this special edition only at Sweetwater I jumped on it. It wasn't in stock when I bought it but I think when it came in Drew got it shipped immediately. And again he has helped me a lot over the years. You will see from the picture of the amp there is a new guitar my review on that is also in Sweetwater. I must say FedEx got it to me as fast as they could with free ground shipping. It actually arrived on a Saturday about 45 minutes before I went to practice with the boys. I must say they were very impressed with the tone of this amp. I guess if I only could keep one of my 3 Amps this would be the one.
If you're looking at one just get it especially now really good pricing and of course the fantastic Sweetwater experience is fantastic.

Phenomenal Amp!

By Dathan G. from GEISMAR, LA

I considered many different amps. The classic princeton circuit, with the 12" cannabis rex, at this price point is an absolute steal!! All of my guitars sound wonderful through it ('76 Strat, G&L ASAT Special, D'andelico Ludlow Deluxe, PRS S2 McCarty). All of my drive pedals sound great in front of it (Lightspeed, Maxon OD820, J Rockett Melody, Greer Supa Cobra). The natural amp breakup is wonderful, and adds a surprising amount of sustain even at edge of breakup. Reverb is exactly as advertised, and I didn't even know I needed tremolo, but now I know! Also, the tweed is gorgeous! For just over $ out the door, hands down, can't get much better than this.

Great Amp!

By John from Georgia

Owned many vintage amps through the years & right out of the box...this little beast hangs with the best of them! Classic Fender Princeton tone! The 12" Eminence Cannabis Rex just opens this amp up more! Great w/ pedals! Modded mine a little - retubed with JJ's, changed the knobs & indicator lamp from red to gold. Love this amp & got a great deal from Sweetwater!

Sweetwater 65 Princeton reverb reissue

By Steve from Mississippi
Music Background: 50 years playing bars in Chicago now retired

I've been playing guitar since 1965. I have owned literally dozens of Fender amps. This Princeton sounds pretty amazing. Using the magic 6's it sounds as good or better than any fender I have owned. And it is loud on 6. Like all fender the dwell on the reverb is a little much for me. The tremolo is just right. I've only got a few hours on the Cannabis Rex. But I'm thinking of swapping in some other drivers. Specifically a Vox Blue 12, and a Weber 12F150. But for classic rock blues jazz country this amp covers them all. It is the quintessential Princeton with a 12" driver. The tweed gives the amp a substantial quality look and feel. It comes with an fender embroidered cover. The cover is much better than the old vinyl ones. If thinking about it. Just buy it you will not be disappointed.

Is it the hemp cone speaker?

By Sweetwater Customer

Hey I'm an old guy who's played Fenders since the 60's and every other top of the line tube amp out there and this is my all-time favorite. I still play out and I always get great comments on the tone of my amp. I almost always use my trusty old 57 to mic it up because the sweet spot for me is about 4. At nearly 70 I also appreciate that it weighs a relatively light 34 lbs. Get one while you still can!

another 5 star review!

By Craig from Western Mass.

Not much I can add to the 223 (so far) 5 star reviews. not a single 4,3,2, or 1! Not many amps out there that nobody can find a single thing to complain about! I bought this amp on the strength of the reviews alone. I read about 75 or so and every 4th or 5th one was, I'm an older player and have had a whole bunch of Fender amps over the years and this is the BEST ONE I've every heard! or something along those lines. There are blues, rock, jazz, and country players and they all say the same thing. They couldn't ALL be wrong..... and they weren't!

The only thing I will add: the amp is also drop dead gorgeous on top of being the best of many many Fender amps I've owned in my 50 years of playing!

So. Just. Buy. It.

The Tweed '65 Princeton 1x12 is awesome !

By Paul from Maryland
Music Background: Long time guitar player

I recently received the Tweed Princeton and I could not be happier. It sits right next to a Super Champ XD, which I like a great deal. It sits underneath a UAD Ox box, which is essential at my house. Either amp at a volume above 1 is pretty loud - and the Ox is a huge game changer. The Princeton sounds really nice at about 4, just at the edge of breakup with a strat, and just over that with a 335. At 7 or 8, it is just gorgeous with a full driven tube growl.
This is a really nice amplifier.

Rock hammer

By Eric from Columbus

You know how you used to think that you needed that big Orange half stack? And then you watched Shawshank for the hunnerth time and noticed that the tiny little rock hammer that Andy Dufresne used to bust outta jail did the job with grace and dignity and you though, "Huh, I wonder if 15 watts would do it right?"

Well, let me just tell you that my half stack is at the curb and the Princeton rides shotgun with me now.

Half stacks are for suckers.

Great Amp

By Sweetwater Customer

I really like this amp. I feel like I finally found my sound. I play a Telecaster through it. Overdrive and a little delay. I like the on board tremolo and reverb. The reverb is a little noisy, though. I think the 12 inch speaker makes a big difference. Looks great too. Easy to dial in, gets nice and loud, but sounds great at lower volume as well. Glad I bought it.

It’s Okay

By Mike from Texas

Now that I've had it for awhile, I've come to realize that maybe I bought too much into the hype with all the five star reviews. I thought maybe it was the speaker so, I changed it out. It sounded better but, was still lacking something. I finally decided just to have it handwired and move on. Now I will never let it go and cost wise at least IMO it still worked out. I tried hard to like it in its factory form but, in the end it wasn't for me.

The ultimate in clean amps

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Player of rock, blues, and jazz.

This Sweetwater exclusive limited edition is a fantastic amp! The Princeton has always been considered one of the finest sounding amps clean. This particular example with the 12" Eminence Cannabis Rex really puts out creamy tone. With a Fender Noventa Strat with P-90 pickups you can get a wonderful rich tone for jazz on the neck pickup and cracking blues leads on the bridge. With a Telecaster, you can get bell-like tone or Nashville twang out of it. With a Fender XII you get lush chime. With a Strat with Texas Special pickups, I get appropriate Strat quack and nice treble that isn't too brittle, like on some examples of the Princeton. At the edge of breaking up, you get great 50's rock tones.

Do yourself a favor

By James A. from Mentor
Music Background: Bedroom Player

Do yourself a favor and get this amp if it is something you are considering, it has the coolest tone. I tend to live at the clean and bluesy end of the spectrum so this amp knocks it out of the park. I have not been playing that long so my review may not be as detailed as some, this amp has a very true sound. It makes a Tele sound more like a Tele and LP more like a LP. Hands down the best piece of gear I own. No regrets here.

A Classic Improved

By J F. from Virginia
Music Background: Used to play for money, now for fun

I haven't owned a pure tube amp for years. I forgot the sound and the feel they have. This is not your 60's Princeton! The upgraded size and quality of the speaker makes all the difference in the world. It plays clean and sparkles at low volume but rocks the house when above 6 on the dial. I'm very pleased. As always, Sweetwater turns your order quickly and excels at communications during the process. Nothing but praise here!

Could not be happier!!!

By Cliff from Houston

After doing a lot of research on tube amps (combos), I finally pulled the trigger on this Princeton Reverb with the 12" speaker back in June 2021. So I have had the opportunity to play my Strat through it for over a month now and Wow, Im very impressed and pleased with my purchase. It maybe a little pricey because there are so many other amps out there which are good too, but I definitely feel that it's worth the price and I'm so glad that I went over my original budget and got this keeper!

All of the Five Star rating and other reviews are right, so I won't go into detail about all of the wonderful qualities that the Princeton Reverb has, but I'll just say I couldn't be happier!

Best amp I've ever owned (and I'm 70 and have been playing since I was 14. So I've definitely had my share of equipment) .... Sound is so pure and full... No matter what I plug into it, or pedals I put in front of it... It's the best....Although I use pedals, I wanted something I could just plug into and play... and this fits the bill...And a Big thanks to Sweetwater for such a smooth transition.

Baby Twin Reverb

By Sweetwater Customer from Montana
Music Background: I jam a lot..

I have been wanting a Princeton Reverb for a long time, so I bought this model. I have the CRex speaker in a couple of my other amps and like the tone from those things. After I got the amp and played it for awhile I decided to switch up the speaker situation though.. I bought a 12" to 10" adapter and installed an Eminence Ragin Cajun speaker.

Now it sounds a lot better in my ears with that 10" speaker and I also hook it up to a 1x12 cab, with both speakers running it really adds a lot of dimension to the tone and thickens up the midrange..

If you need a small grab and go amp this is a good one. I have a Deluxe Reverb and a Twin Reverb for the bigger stuff, but the Princeton keeps up pretty good hooked up to that 1x12 cab..

Love It

By Charles P. from West Tennessee
Music Background: Banjo and Guitar, Just for fun.

This amp is Awesome! Beautiful, bright, crystal clean. Turn up the volume and it dirties up just enough. The reverb and Tremolo are beautiful. You can turn up enough Tremolo for Creedence Clearwater songs, no pedal necessary. The reverb is wonderful, perfect for that classic depth, and feel you hear when listening to Country music recordings from the 40s,50s and 60s. Like plugging into an amplifier time machine. Worth every penny, and looks beautiful too.

Great Amp, ante up for the Princeton!

By Strumble H. from Michigan
Music Background: Lead Guitar

Great amp. The 6V6 power section beats the Blues Junior, with a nice full tone that sounds like a bigger amp. The 12" speaker gives you a bit more headroom than the 10" speaker models. The tweed with the grill cloth looks classy. Obviously not cheap, but anything any good usually will set you back at least some $$$.

Very small complaints....the reverb is a little blurry (I prefer my Boss reverb pedal), and the tremolo is not very deep, and can't be set slow enough to play 'For What It's Worth'. But that's it as far as deficiencies; I definitely recommend this purchase. The Cannabis Rex speaker is fine as is, but I put in a Creamback G12M-65 which I believe handles large amounts of overdrive better. Thanks for Alan Finkbeiner for great service!

Sublime Reverb

By Philip D. from San Diego

It's hard to believe that such a broad sound can come from such a small amp. I was content with an AC15 for a while, but I kind of missed a Deluxe Reverb I'd parted with many years ago. This Princeton gives me everything I loved about the Deluxe, but it's a bit smaller and easier to move around. The first time I turned the reverb up to three, I couldn't help but smile wide. I'd forgotten just how good a tube driven reverb can sound. I've had this amp for nearly two months now, and I still smile every time I hear the tone coming out of it. If you don't need to extra layer of volume from a Deluxe, I think the Princeton will have you more than covered.

Kevin Scott at Sweetwater was a huge help sorting out my payment details and getting the amp to me the very next day here in CA. I couldn't be happier with the whole experience. Thank you!

Fender '65 Princeton Reverb 1X12 15 watt Lacquered Tweed Sweetwater exclusive is just what the doctor ordered!

By Jim D. from Woodland Park, Colorado
Music Background: Been playing for about 35 years.

First of all I want to thank my resident Professor of Mojo, Josh Dillon for his expertise and help over the years. I ordered a Fender '65 Princeton Reverb 1X12 and it shipped immediately just like Sweetwater always does. Unfortunately the amp had a hum that signaled something was amiss. I called Sweetwater and spoke to a technician who was knowledgeable and personable. He gave me the option of returning the amp or he could send me a new tube that might fix the problem. Since Sweetwater ships just about everything for free plus the fact that I really dig the company; I went for the tube to try to save them the expense of another shipping charge added to them. The tube was shipped that day and unfortunately it didn't work.

So I called the Customer Service folks who were kind enough to ship another amp to me post haste. Sweetwater's customer service people are second to none and a big thank you to them for the great service. The second amp worked perfectly and the sound is very satisfying. I think the 12 inch speaker sounds better to my ear than the 10 inch. The sound is clean and it can get so loud you can't stay in the same room with it. It works great in any venue that most musicians will play in. I highly recommend this amp to anyone who wants that classic Fender tone in an amp that is not so heavy but delivers the goods

2021 Fender PRRI LTD Edition 1x12 Lacquered Tweed Amp.

By Dennis B. from Vermont
Music Background: Semi-Pro, Pro, Semi-Pro

2021 Fender PRRI LTD Edition, 1x12 Lacquered Tweed Amp: "Product of Fender Musical Instruments, Corona California, U.S.A." - Thanks to Sweetwater and Greg Savino for their great customer service and patience with me. I'm an old school geezer and have been playing guitar for over 50 years – playing most amps and guitars available during those centuries (LOL). The Princeton is a full circle for me – I still have my Boogies, Voxes, and Marshalls, and a few that I made, but the tone and feel of this amp played clean, and with some FX just brings it back. The 12" Cannabis Rex speaker is perfect for this circuit/amp and makes it much more of a gigging amp (to me ears and taste). It blooms the tone and cuts some of the "Ice Picky" highs. The cabinet is impeccable – probably made by MojoTone. It sounds beautiful at all volumes and with FX too. The footswitch is silent. I will still always use my other amps, but this is going to the grave with me. LOL. GET THE 12" SPEAKER!!

Princeton Tweed

By Thomas
Music Background: 47 years playing live music.

I have been playing guitar and bass for over 47 years. Yeah, I'm old but I saw all the cool bands. I play rock, blues, some jazz. I waited to leave my rating- because we were supposed to rehearse for a gig- but the date was canceled due to Covid...I wanted to play with drums, bass and keys and another guitarist. However, I've played long enough to know the Princeton could cut through with a full band. I have not got it over 5 on the volume- it's pretty loud, but, I want to break in the 12" Eminence Cannabis Rex speaker. I used a Les Paul studio and then an Epiphone Lucille- the amp has great tone and I didn't push it- it'll get it's chance. It has a little growl around 5 and great sustain thru the Epiphone. It has a warm more beefy sound thru the neck pickup. The low weight, 34 pounds was a key for me, back problems. The older I get, the less my gear weighs. I would highly recommend this Fender Princeton Reverb to any guitarist who plays rock, blues. I think the amp sounds great.

Wonderful Amp!

By Michael from Maryland
Music Background: 5yrs with a band. Now a weekend jam session regular.

I've had this amp about a week and I'm loving it. I'm playing at home with a telecaster into input 2 with the volume at 4 1/2. Haven't taken it to a jam session yet but I'm pretty sure through input 1, and volume between 6 and 7 that it will be loud enough with some nice break up. Reverb and Vibrato sound awesome. I currently own a blues deluxe RI and I used to own a Mesa Boogie 45w 4x10 combo. This amp is so great at 34lbs. Simple, compact, light weight, and sounds stellar. Love the Canibus Rex speaker. Also love sweet water.

I do not understand all of the 5 star reviews on this amp.

After owning for 6 months i rarely plug it in. Too much fooling with the tone to enjoy playing.

Pedals really do not help.

All of the kudos to Sweetwater customer service is nice but i do not care about this when reading a review. I am more interested in product tone and quality.

Disappointed in this purchase.

Very good, but...not as good as my vintage 1965 BF original

By Marty K. from FL
Music Background: 40 yrs as semi-pro and casual player

So I know...it's not going to be a fair fight comparing it to my 1965 PR (with a 12" Scumnico) but even when I ran the Sweetwater PR into my 65 cabinet and speaker (I didn't like the Eminence, thought that was the issue) there was a pretty clear difference in tone. The old amp was all sweetness, full of nice overtones, clean as a bell, gorgeous (which are the reasons I love that amp). The new amp had a somewhat sharper high-mid bite I did not like, and the tone was not clean and clear. It sounded...processed, more removed from the guitar, even going direct. It wasn't a satisfying clean Fender tone for me. For a new amp, if I never knew what a real blackface sounded like, sure, it would have been great. But after a/b'ing both of them there was no reason for me to spend a grand for a backup amp I didn't like. YMMV, and you can see all the great reviews. Love the idea of selling the PR with a 12", that is killer and I would never go back to my Deluxe!

This thing is great u guys! Some of the best cleans I've heard. The 12 inch speaker gives it some more low end also. Ive tried the 10 inch version as well. I liked that one too. I like to crank this into break-up and then roll my guitar volume like half way back. It also responds to my TS9, my morning glory....and my Friedman be-od very well. Finally Getting a Tube Amp

By Steve S. from California
Music Background: Was a kind of pop-ish folk singer that later evolved into kind of a soft rock/pop sound. Record CD's of original music.

Actually, I do already own a tube amp... a huge old Twin Reverb that I have to move with a two-wheeler to avoid hernia. But that one is great when I want a really big fat signal on something. The Princeton was recommended by a friend who is much more of a player than I am and gigs a lot live. I mostly record in a home studio, but this new amp has been a real treat to work with. I'm getting some of the cleanest, strongest tone I've ever recorded. Since my songs are musically rather simple, built on guitar chords, I can get a primary track now that pulls the song all the way along. I'm still working on removing some pedal buzz, but it's easily the "A" amp in my studio now. The Twin was always just too much so I was using a smaller Fender solid state that was reliable but not ballsy. Then that toasted... old age I think. Be advised... if you 'up your amp game' (if you will) then a lot of other things in your home recording array are going to have to come up. It just happens. I've already bought new cables and surge protectors and as I say, I should probably get a pedal power supply and a buzz blocker of some kind. New gear is a kick, one you shouldn't deny yourself.

I've had this amp for just one day now and I can't stop playing! This amp is clean, clean, clean. The 12" Eminence speaker fits this configuration perfect. Tone for days. Plenty of headroom for my pedals also! The reverb is 2 thumbs up and the vibe/trem is a nice touch. Plenty loud for my use which is mostly home playing and an occasional jam session with a drummer. You can crank this amp and it doesn't get "flubby" thanks to the speaker. Very little hiss or hum at higher volumes also! Very pleased with this purchase. Definitely impressed by the quality of this amp! Big things sometimes do come in a smaller package! Buy it....Love it! I do!

Bought this as another amp I don't need however it quickly became my go to. Love the look and I'm a big tweed guitarist so I bought it. No RAGRETS!,, not one letter!, Especially impressed with the early but perfect breakup compared to my 68 Deluxe Reverb RI and my Hot Rod Deluxe III tweed. I still really like my other amps (also a a Super Reverb) but this amp has been a pleasure. It's different than my other fenders but still sounds like Fender....all the way down to the intermittent glowing red light (wouldn't have it any other way) !!

Thanks Geoff!!

Just WOW!

By Rick from Alabama

Alright, I'm going to beat a dead horse here, but this Princeton amp is really sweet. There's a reason why everyone has rated it so highly. This Sweetwater Only version checks all the boxes. It sounds amazing (most important), the 12" CB is a great speaker for both sound and fullness and the tweed just looks cool. I have to admit I was concerned buying an amp without trying it first, but with all the 5-star reviews, I took a chance and am so glad I did. If you like Fender amps and are on the fence, just do it!

Far superior to the standard '65 Princeton Reverb

By Kurtis A. from Walnut Creek California

This is simply one of the best guitar amps I've ever played through (and I've played through a lot of amps). Great tones and clarity, no speaker rattle or cabinet rattle even at very high volumes, lots of clean headroom. Can get a wide variety of tones out of this amp. Pairs particularly well with Telecaster (to my ears, anyway), but also sounds great with Stratocaster, Les Paul, PRS Modern Eagle (I've spent hours testing it out with different guitars). I'm not a pedals guy, so I can't speak to that aspect.

Important to mention: this amp is VERY different from the standard '65 Princeton Reverb (which has the 10" Jensen speaker). This one, with the 12" Emminence Cannibus Rex speaker pushes more air, has a fuller sound, and holds up far better to high volumes. A completely different amp in my opinion. If you are like me and have tried out the standard version of the amp (at Guitar Center or whatever) and found it lacking, do yourself a big favor and don't stop there in your evaluation of '65 Princetons.

This is also a fine amp visually: the tweed with the brown face cloth makes it look like a small '59 Bassman amp.

Well worth it for tone worship

By Donnie B. from Pittsburgh, PA

I ordered this with high expectations and I was not prepared for how much I would fall in tone love.

Don't get me wrong, I am newer to clean tones, drippy reverb, and intense vibrato, but this was more than I expected. I have been thoroughly enjoying playing blues, rockabilly, surf and spaghetti western-esque tunes (think "Old Black" by Earth, and Good Bad and the Ugly) and this amp nails it better than any other amp I have played; even when they had pedals. I have removed two pedals from my chain because the reverb and vibrato.

Put a little dirt and the blues tones give you chills. This amp has been taking the pedals I have thrown at it really well. Please note, this amp is all clean. Not 2 channel with a fat or crunchy channel. One clean channel. You will have to add your own overdrive/distortion.

The amp can get loud, but at volume 2 or 3 its perfectly fine for home use. Use the second input jack and it's all good. Over that level though and you will be in some serious sonic territory for a 15 watt beast.

The Cannibus Rex seems to have a bit more beefy low end than what I noticed in Jensen/Celestion variants (they seemed tighter or more compressed. Chimes coming out brighter).

I will warn you though, these tubes cook. After an hour of playing you will notice the smell. Keep a small fan around if possible or open up the back for more airflow.

I have to give great credit to Geoff Allen from Sweetwater for the assistance on this. He really came through here. He has been my contact for a couple years and will definitely continue to go through him to satisfy my gear acquisition syndrome.

Almost A Five

By MC G. from Left Coast
Music Background: decades of jazz

Great tone. Very quiet on idle. The 12" Cannabis Rex speaker seems to give me the tight bass that I want when playing jazz. I especially like using Input 2 so I can turn the amp up more w/o it getting too loud for a small room. The build looks pretty good (see below) and I've detected no rattles or loose bits. And visually-speaking, the amp is just lovely. Even my wife remarked on it.

So why not a Five Star?

1) The biggest beef is the plywood cabinet material, which is heavy and sonically dead. I think a finger-jointed, solid pine (like the hand wired Deluxe) would sweeten the tone, and would definitely reduce the weight.
2) The Reverb / Vibrato pedal buttons don't have a "click" so you don't have any kind of foot feedback when you engage / disengage those features. Sure, the sound changes (unless the intensity isn't dimed, in which case the vibrato is quite understated) but if I'm playing and want to change the tone, I really appreciate the realtime tactile feedback.
3) There's a eight inch gap between the bottom of the control panel and the top of the grille cloth (not visible if the amp's on the floor and you're standing in front of it).

Are these deal-breakers? Not at all -- at least not to me. I'm happy I purchased the amp and enjoy playing it.

Very pleased with this amp and Sweetwater

By Daniel M. from Pennsylvania

This amp is it. There is nothing I can really add that hasn't already been stated in other reviews. It sounds and performs beautifully with whatever you plug into it. I don't gig and use a Dr. Z attenuator to throttle the loudness a bit for more reasonable volume in my house. It's a perfect set up for my needs.

One hiccup I had was that the first amp I ordered was defective. Sweetwater was there to help and assisted me immediately (thanks Alex Mattingly). I received a replacement just a few days later. Just a really great, no-nonsense customer service experience.

Couldn't be happier.

OMG!

By John W. from NJ
Music Background: Semi-Pro

I received this amp 2 hours ago, let it come up to room temperature a bit and fired up. I could not believe the bell-like clarity, the low end articulation and overall tone shaping that this can do. I've been playing through a 56 Super clone and a 62 Deluxe clone. This blackface Princeton RI is the real deal! The Cannabis Rex is just so open and full! And efficient......this amp is loud! Can play along in a gig situation, no problem. At the risk of repeating everyone else here, get one! Shock and Awe!

Awesome Special Edition Amp

By Dave M. from Pennsylvania
Music Background: 30+ years

I bought this amp to fill a role in my amp collection, and I couldn't be happier. I needed a 'Fenderesque' combo amp - a portable grab and go pedal platform with reverb. Tremolo is a huge plus! I've always been afraid of small, open-back combos sounding thin, especially with 10" speakers, so when I saw one with a 12" Cannabis Rex - SOLD!!! Also love the lacquered tweed look and smell) - it fits the sound well.

Very happy, came delivered with no damages other than a little box rash, and delivered quickly.

Another home run Sweetwater. This is why I'll continue to be a customer.

works better for me than my 68 deluxe reverb.

By Sweetwater Customer

I almost didn't buy a new Fender American Pro Jazzmaster because the you tube reviews made it sound thin and harsh. At the very least I would be replacing pick-ups. Plugged straight into the Princeton amp that guitar is pure magic, covers surf, jazz, early rock with an authentic, only better, sound quality that blew me away. This amp has everything I could dream of, I no longer have interest in chasing after vintage amps. I've notice one common thread on you tube guitar reviews, they can't seem to play plugged direct into an amp. They have somehow convinced themselves into thinking you must use effects and pedals to get a good sound when it's just the opposite. Pedals rob the true tone of the guitar even if it's not activated because the vast majority of those pedals don't have true bypass. If you play with distortion, something Leo Fender spent a great deal of time trying to avoid, you can play any piece of crap guitar, it makes no difference, there is no tone involved it's basically static.

Wow!!! Is my final thought after a week of playing with this Amp

By Steve K. from Santa Cruz, CA
Music Background: Guitar since kid, cover bands thru college, blues bands, playing by myself with looper or DAW as of late

I have been putting this amp through the paces for about a week now and continue to be blown away! I got this amp to replace an old 130W fender power chorus solid state amp. I really couldn't use the power chorus amp for "fender" sounds because it needed to be played too loud to really sound good. Had to depend on a Boss GT-1000 for sound color. Don't get me wrong, that worked well but I pretty much to keep my amp volume on 1 or 2 - much too low gain for circuit dynamics to kick in.

With the Princeton'65 tube amp I can play at a much lower volume level and get the Amp's tube dynamics to kick in. Amazing clean and over-driven sound!! Also, don't let the 15W fool you - this amp is loud enough to fill a small club, but being housebound with my family and the the pandemic for last 6 months and having a small puppy - my amp volume options are limited.

Again, this amp sounds amazing with direct connection to guitar but also sounds very good with Boss signal processing. Also like the the amp simplicity volume, EQ, and reverb knobs only. My only wishlist item would have been an effects loop on the amp. But I knew it didn't have one before I purchased the Amp, and my GT 1000 has its own send/return bus so I can vary Wet/Dry there.

This tweed amp has a 12" Eminence speaker that as far as I can tell sounds amazing and responds to dynamics very well. My old amp had Jensen's... also the Princeton is hugely likeable for home. It has a small physical footprint. Also, really like the look of this amp - my wife doesn't recoil significantly to the aesthetics of my small (and I do mean small) music studio in a spare bedroom.

Gave this 5 stars as it far exceeded my expectations for sound, build quality, and (especially) noise floor. Almost dead quiet with guitar plugged in and volume at 3 (3 is my go-to volume on this amp - quiet enough not to bug my family but enough gain to push the tube a little).

Worth the investment!! Also a huge shout to my rep at Sweetwater, Chris Finton, for tirelessly responding to my constant barrage of questions and providing his usual amazing level of support!

The best amp I've owned

By Sweetwater Customer from Lake Tahoe, Nevada

I've had a few over the 40 years I've been playing guitar. More like a couple of dozen, from combos to stacks. Even a few solid state amps. This one is loud enough and can be cranked to about 4.5 in a reasonable room and you get great tone as it begins to break up and sing. Reverb and Tremolo are Fender types and the bigger speaker gives some great low end. Add a couple pedals Fuzz especially and my tele can get Carlos Santana type sustain without breaking my ears. Yes, it's a pricey little amp. But it's a pro item. With the tweed look, and the way it sounds, everyone I've played with wants one. It sounds great at a lower volume setting. Chimes, cleans, just not a lot of headroom at 15 watts. It's one of the easiest amps to use. Just turn it up and adjust the tone knobs a bit or just leave them in the middle. Turn it up, roll off your guitar volume and it's money.

Princeton Reverb Tweed

By Robert M. from Madison WI
Music Background: Active Gigging Musician (Pre-COVID)

I've had this for almost a year now, and think it might be the best amp I have in my collection of 20+ amps. I own vintage Fender Blackfaces, reissues, Vox, Marshall and Dr. Z amps, and this one is right there at the top of my favorites list. Re-fitting this with a 12" speaker should have been done a long time ago, and Fender could do worse than continuing to build them this way. I've had 3 Princeton Reverbs in the past, in two different configurations and always found them to be a very "dark" amp. Played around changing the 10" speakers and never got the chime I was looking for and felt was in the amp. When I saw this one, with the Eminence 12" Cannabis Rex, I thought I'd give it one more try. Turns out it was a good decision on my part. This amp's tone is right on the money in my opinion. The Cannabis has a softer chime to it, with the right amount of bright and never sounds muddy. I use this amp for gigs and when in a larger venue, I simply mic it to the PA. The tone with a Les Paul is plain heavenly. Reverb and Tremolo effects are musical and useful.

Baby Beast

By Jay S. from Austin TX
Music Background: Singer/Songwriter/Producer

I attend many guitar shows.
There are always builders with low-wattage tweed amps that go for 2-3 times what this one costs.
This one is better.

The Cannabis Rex sounds round and clear, and it gives this amp miles of headroom compared to the traditional Jensen.
When you push it, it breaks up in a way that no pedal can duplicate.
This amp's best feature, however, is the reverb. It's beautifully voiced and sounds good from 1 to soaked.
This amp will have many applications for stage and studio.

A quality investment in good tone!

By Jared T. from Oklahoma City, OK
Music Background: Former gigging musician (5+ years)

I used to be a gigging musician for 5+ years that just used any ol' amp at the venue, get an "okay" sound, and move on. That was the reality of being in that kind of workflow. As a result, I've never become much of an amp guy. I've own some "okay" amps that get a sound and that's what I worked with, but since buying this Fender Princeton now I might start a new amp collection!

Fender amps have a true classic sound that never gets stale so any time I had a gig and the backline was a Fender I was pretty happy with the sound. My sales engineer suggested that I give this amp a try and I'm glad I did! When I turned it on immediately (bass and treble at noon, with reverb at 3), I was just enamored by the sound. I played that amp for hours just the clean sound with no pedals! I now understand that an amp speaker for an amp is the equivalent to the guitar pickup in an electric guitar, it make a huge fundamental difference in the tone. With the upgraded speaker it made all my guitars shine at their best! I have a smaller, refined collection of guitars and this amp just gives me all the tones I could get. I spent a lot of time getting new and fresh sounds using the volume and tone knobs on my guitars!

The main takeaway from this review should be this, invest in a quality guitar amp to get the most out of your guitar. A great guitar amp will give a lifetime of good tone and I think this amp gives more than your money's worth. Thank you so much to my sales engineer Ashton Vaudt for the suggestion and thank you Sweetwater for your world class customer service!

Lightweight Powerhouse!

By Ted L. from Englewood, CO

I bought this amp because became tired of lugging around a 55lb combo. I gig 2-3 times a month (pre-covid) and was lugging around a chunk of a 1x12 50 watt combo. Knowing that Fender amps are all louder than you think I gave this one a try and let me tell you, I am loving this amp! Anyone who has gigged at El Chapultepec in Denver, CO will understand what I mean when I say, that on a packed night people by the juke box at the front door have no problem hearing this amp over the rest of the band. Sounds great, looks great and does not require a dolly to transport! Well done Fender!

Just outstanding!

By Joel R. from Wilmington, NC
Music Background: Luthier

I really prefer Celestion speakers, but when I heard it had a Cannabis Rex 12" speaker, I had to try it. I've heard that speaker before in Marshall style 18-Watt clones and loved it! It's very quiet at idle, low bedroom volumes. The clean is a perfect platform for my pedals. That is how I use it. It can sound a little scooped sometimes, but nowhere near as much as that JHS / Milkman amp. This is a really perfect clean tone that plays well with pedals and the reverb is equally outstanding because it is useable. You can absolutely turn it up too much, if thats your thing, but set low, it really takes the place of any fancy digital reverb pedal. It has the Fender sound whether cranked or set to lower volumes. My only regret is that I didn't buy it sooner. Sweetwater has had this exclusive for years and I never looked at it closely. Glad I finally did. Always a pleasure dealing with Sweetwater and my sales person Mark!

Sweet sounding amp!

By KC M. from Stevens Point, WI
Music Background: Professional part time.

First I would like to thank my representative Geoff for helping me secure financing after having some difficulty. Having finally played a show with this small amp I can safely say this will be replacing my Twin Reverb for my main gigging amp. This past Sunday I played a small outdoor with my funk band without any mics on anything and it kept up well with the rest of the band. I play clean 90 percent of the time and there is plenty of headroom with my setup: G&L Comanche ( Volume 8, Treble 8, Bass 4.75)>Ego Compressor(my only always on pedal) with everything set to noon>through the rest of my pedal board> Princeton (volume 5.3, Treble 5.75-6, Bass 3.5, Reverb 2.25. I wanted to give you all my settings to show where I was and still be relatively clean with some natural tube compression starting to happen. The tone reminds me of a cross between a Magnatone 260 and Twin Reverb. I never was able to get to that sweet spot with my Twin until about 5 on the volume and then it is way too loud for stage volume. I had the Princeton at 7 once where I finally got it to overdrive, but almost lost my hearing in the process. My buddy played through the Princeton with his Les Paul with hot humbuckers and was already well overdriven at 5. So depending on the guitar you play you can have a very loud clean gigging amp that doesn't way too much and sounds fantastic.

Great amp!

By Dan from Minneapolis, MN

The many, many glowing reviews for this amp are right. This amp has that great Princeton sound, but with extra fullness and airiness because of the 12" Eminence Cannabis Rex speaker. I'm primarily a home player and get great tones even at lower home volumes. The amp takes pedals well and looks great. The speaker is a bit darker than some but tweaking the EQ gets me right where I want to be for classic rock, Americana, and classic country. I've experimented with too many amps lately - Blues Jr, Vox AC15, Princeton with 10" speaker - but with this special edition Sweetwater Princeton I have found the best amp for me. Thanks to Josh Kattner for the great support on this purchase.

Perfect!

By Ben H. from Columbus, OH
Music Background: Hobbyist for 30+ years, and lifelong student (with a teacher)

There are no bad reviews for this thing. I just bought one and understand why. It's low enough wattage that you can get some super expressive tones at fairly low volume, and you can make it sing when you turn it up. I had a 100 watt Boss Katana before this and would have told you it could do no wrong. Very nice amp for sure, but I've never owned, until now, a tube amp, and so glad I took the plunge. It's definitely more than you should do if you only ever play for yourself in the bedroom. Modeling amps are so good these days that you're covered there. I have a champion 20 next to my bed, which I've dialed into some crazy good bedroom tones. I can never play live with that. The princeton covers such a wide range of practice, recording, and live tones that it can't be ignored. The cabinet is the same size as the standard 65 10 inch, but they squeezed in a 12 inch speaker that brings out the bottom end and allows a little more versatility. Great amp. Not disappointed in any way. Nobody has a bad word for this thing in a hundred and some Sweetwater reviews. It's not a fluke.

Inspiring

By Brian from Near Yuma, Arizona
Music Background: Amateur hack; Still in love with the guitar after more than 50 years (and haven't played in a band since high school!).

I received my Tweed 65 Princeton 1x12" from Sweetwater today and have only one word to describe it: inspiring! Over the past few years I have been on several amp buying expeditions. After, noodling around on various amps in my below $750 price range, I frequently had the opportunity to also try a couple of Princetons - just to see what a higher priced amp sounded like. In every instance it was love (and hearing) at first sight, and I'd leave the stores somewhat disappointed. "Someday", I thought, "hopefully I'll have the resources own one of these.". Well, that time finally came, and my patience has paid off. I don't have the depth of amp. experience that a lot of others (here) have, but I am in total agreement with them. I am amazed at the articulation and rich tone of this beautiful Princeton. Even thought it will be several weeks until its speaker is broken in, I am already pleased with it's smooth trebles and deep, but not flabby, bass. My playing improved immediately; I had no idea that my guitar sounded that good! I plugged it into my new Princeton and three fleeting hours later my wife was calling me for dinner. Best amp purchase I've ever made, and thanks to Aaron for patiently answering my deluge of amplifier questions. Truly, if you're on the fence, I'll join the chorus of other reviewers, buy it, you won't be disappointed!

Why did I wait so long?!?

By Jim C. from Boston
Music Background: 35 years pursuing tone

1st impression is…why didn't I buy this years ago?!? The tone is amazing & can be dialed in so easily… truly "plug & play." Personally I thought the reverb & sparkling cleans was why I bought it, but the true secret sauce is the vibrato. I figured the vibrato would be set to zero, but DO NOT fall for that mistake. I run the vibrato 100% of the time, just a light swirl (speed is set to 3 & intensity is set to 4). WOW, just an amazing tone – clean, jangly & HUGE sparkle when you blend both the reverb & vibrato. LOUD little amp too! Last thought, the 12 inch speaker doesn't flub out with an open E major chord, even with humbuckers. Thank goodness for Charlie Davis, he is just fantastic & my 3rd purchase (Les Paul & Marshall DSL were the other two) with him.

The one!!!

By Glen S. from Tyler, Tx
Music Background: Hobbyist, recording artist

Here is another review for the pile! Currently 49 years old and started at age 15 playing guitar. Had just about every tube amp, modeler etc. ... yah yah yah. You all have heard this before. Avoided buying and singing praises for Fender due to being a nonconformist. After years of disappointment and not quite finding THE TONE, i decided finally to cave to curiosity. I am glad i did. I also decided to trust the reviews of close to 150 people.

Long story short. Best cleans and recognizable sound heard on dozens of records. Takes every pedal i have better than every other amp i ever had. For the first time no matter where i stand in the room, this amp sounds full even without the reverb. No loss of bass when off axis.

Also, i run my superstrat with Suhr Doug Aldrich bridge pickup through a revival drive for high gain then into the Princeton and plug the speaker cable into a 2x12 closed back orange cab with v30s. Hi gain tone from heaven which quite honestly only needs to be mic'ed and sent into the DAW. I have been searching for this for years!

On another note, i could not care less about PCB or point to point. This amp is beyond killer for the cost. In the end i could of saved thousands and thousands of dollars had i known this first. No turning back for me. Peace!

Lastly, for the young at heart wanting high gain classic metal tones ie: VH, Dokken, Ozzy, etc etc ... use the signal chain mentioned above.

What a TREAT to be self quarantined with this amp. I plugged in my Tele and the TONE WAS FAT! CLEAN CLEAR and BALANCED.
The reverb is $$$$, the vibrato as well. Tiberius and the Sweetwater team delivered as always. The packing was First Class. It arrived in perfect condition.
I was playing through a modeling amp, I was sick of all the parameters and time it took to dial in a decent sound, then I plugged into my friends Fender tube amp and then I began my search. It's nice to just PLUG AND PLAY!!!
Definitely worth the money—.

Great Little Amp

By Bryan D. from Michigan
Music Background: 13 years of playing guitar locally

This amp has been able to maintain a good tone at lower house volumes and keep up with a drummer at band practices perfectly fine. I run mine around 3 in my office and it won't be waking any neighbors up. At band practice I set it around 6 and it worked amazing. I should mention that I run a rather large pedal board, but I like the clean Fender tone on its own as well. It has more than enough headroom for my pedals and the slight sag and compression at live levels works amazing with a little boost. Thanks to my Sales Engineer Austin Zachrich for a great first experience at Sweetwater!

I wanted something that would sound nice at a very low volume, but also perform as a Rock amp in clubs and bars at higher volumes. This amp fits the bill. This amp sounds beautiful with my Stratocaster, but also really brings my Rickenbacker to life. It's just a wonderful, high quality, loud little amp that is the perfect compromise between sound, versatility, and portability. The classic fender Reverb and "vibrato" effects are lovely. They vibrato seems to be a bit more subtle on this amp, VS larger Fender amps, but it is gorgeous.

Fender '65 Princeton Reverb 15-watt 1X12 Tube Amp Lacquered Tweed

By Pat from Higganum, CT

I have had this for about a week and put a few hours on it each night. Playing a Telecaster plugged straight in with no pedals the sound is fantastic. I'm sure as the speaker breaks in, it will only sound better. All the rave reviews were justified. If I could only have one amp, this might be it. It is not going anywhere!

All the Princeton Reverb charm with upgraded tone

By Tyler G. from Fort Myers, FL
Music Background: Frontman/songwriter - Broken Waves

I just got my Princeton Reverb Tweed with Cannabis Rex 12". This thing kept up at band rehearsal tonight no problem and even with volume at 6 I didn't get any of the harsh "farty" sounds when overdriven. This amp stayed pretty clean and kept up with the lead's '68 Custom Deluxe with cranked overdrive/distortion. It's like my old Princeton and my '65 Twin had a beautiful blonde child. Best of both worlds.

The only thing I will say is this amp doesn't sound as full at lower volumes with the "12 speaker. This might also be because supposedly this amp is 15 watt instead of 12. Not sure if that's a misprint...

A Jazz Amp I Can Lift

By Bob G. from North Hero, VT
Music Background: jazz, chord/melody and bebop

I started playing (studying, at least) in 1971. When I was old enough to buy my own amps, I played through a JC90, a JC120, a Hot Rod Deluxe, and then a Twin. A big, heavy, 135W Twin. That was my sound, but lugging it around was getting dangerous. I got this 15W Prince last week, and my ears are as happy as they've ever been, and my back is happy too. I want warm and clean, and that's what I have with this Prince. I play a 1958 Gretsch Corsair with a Benedetto pickup, a fairly new Gretsch Tennessee Rose, and a G&L thinline with a TVJones pickup. They all sound fantastic through this amp. Customer service (Reid Bright) was great too.

Really nice amp!

By Sweetwater Customer

Very nice amp with real nice sound and tone. I own a hand wired 1971 Deluxe Reverb and honestly I like this Princeton much more for home playing. You can really crank this thing up for some serious breakup. The tweed on it is beautiful and you gotta love the purple jewel light. The cannabis Rex is a warm rounded speaker. Eventually I will probably change the speaker out for a Celestion Alnico Gold and shoot may even have it point to point wired by my amp tech. Long story short this thing will be buried in my grave with me.

Not as expected

By Bill from Minnesota

I don't know what it is but this amp isn't doing it for me. I'm playing through it with a Reverend Eastsider T and I just can't get a good sound out of it. The trebles are bland and the bass is boomy and overpowering. The low end is not consistent and smooth but instead is huge on the low E in contrast to flimsy sounding when playing anything but the low E. Plugging into the lower decibel input helps to smooth out the overall sound and creates consistent tone across the fretboard so long as I dial up the amp volume and roll back on the guitar volume. And I've yet to achieve any breakup with this amp. With the amp at 10 in either input I just get an inarticulate, harsh, and boomy low end and no breakup. Is it the speaker? Do I hate the 12 inch? Is it my guitar? As an aside I will note I like how my Fender p-bass sounds through it... far superior to the sounds the amp generates with the tele-type guitar. I may keep it as a bass amp but outside of that it has left me frustrated and wanting something more.

The best sounding amp I've ever owned!

By Don J. from Decatur, TX
Music Background: Garage Band

I gigged with this thing for the first time. This is an awesome little amp. I don't think it can be beat for sound, simplicity, and value. So glad it has the 12" speaker instead of the 10". It is the best sounding amp I've ever personally owned. I either own or have owned; Fender Blues Jr., Music Man 212, Fender Super Reverb, Vox AC15, Peavey 115, and a Marshall. The Super Reverb was, of course, more powerful, but didn't have this quality of sound. Thanks to Mac Hatton it came in just in time for the gig. Sweetwater gets it done!!

Home Player

By R.E.

For an amp that was originally designed for a practice amp it sure goes far beyond that. It has a very clean sound. The footprint is small, doesn't weigh all that much as compared to other tube amps in this family. Can be moved around without to much effort. Has very good spring reverb, and vibrato effect. Its built solid. The lacquered tweed gives it a very good look. It will sing out when turned up, also produces a good sound when turned down. Very good amp to practice on in a small house or apartment, without waking the neighbors up. If I had only one choice for an over all tube amp it would be this one. Highly recomended. Very nice with or without foot pedals.

Love the amp, NOT the speaker!

By Eric G. from Washington
Music Background: 35 years, church and hobby playing

I played this amp since June 2017 and never really loved the sound. It was almost like a Fender Blackface amp trying to be something else. Last summer I found a good deal on a Vox AC10 and it blew my tweed Princeton Reverb out of the water! They're different amps used to get different sounds. I was getting fantastic Vox tones, but a very mediocre Fender sound. So I started researching.

Fast forward to today - I just pulled the Eminence Cannabis Rex and installed the Jensen P12Q. It was literally like taking a wet blanket off the amp! This is the sound I was after when I bought the amp 2.5 years ago! Here are my observations after playing with the new Jensen speaker for a couple hours:

1. I can start on 5 with the Treble and Bass knobs, and adjust depending on guitar or pedals plugged in. I used to stay between 10-8 on Treble and 3-0 on Bass. It's much more usable now. I really like that there's a tight but smooth bass, a less dominating midrange, and treble is sparkly but not harsh or ice picky, unless I max the treble knob.
2. The tone controls also now seem to make a much bigger difference. I used to struggle to hear much of a difference when rotating several numbers. AND it's like they change the sound beyond just adding treble or bass, and alter the sound in other cool ways I don't know how to describe. It's like the very character of the sound changes as I turn the knobs.
3. Now my Princeton Reverb actually sounds like what I think a Fender Blackface amp is supposed to sound like, rather than like a Fender trying to be something else.
4. The Jensen is a less efficient speaker, so I have to turn the volume up 0.5 to 1.0 points above what I did before with the same guitars.
5. Slight breakup starts to happen around 5 on the volume knob, where before it was between 6 and 7. That could be considered good or bad, but it doesn't make a huge difference to me.
6. Finally, I was expecting it to be harsh and bright until broken in, but it sounds amazing right after installing it.

I'm not going to say the Cannabis Rex is a bad speaker and a lot of players do like it. BUT I do think if you play a lot of jazzy or bluesy clean sounds without pedals or with only one or two pedals, it may not be what you're after. On the other hand, players who like the Eminence speaker seem to like using overdrive pedals and getting distorted rock tones. The hemp cone and large ceramic magnet probably smooth out any unpleasant characteristics from distortions and overdrives, but really dumb down that clean Fender sparkle and bell like tone that I love. The Jensen P12Q speaker brought that lovely sound back to a gorgeous amp with a fantastic circuit!

One last comment: Some people say Leo Fender designed the Princeton for a 10" speaker, and when you change that formula by adding a 12" baffle and speaker, it just looses something. I disagree. Now that I have the right 12" speaker (for me) in it, I actually like it better than the 10" standard Princeton Reverbs I've played.

Great Jazz Guitar Amp

By Scott from Virginia
Music Background: Amateur performing guitarist of 40 years

I spent a good while researching a new amp mostly intended to use playing jazz guitar. I have a Henriksen Jazzamp 110, and I have played it happily for about 10 years, but it's pretty much a one-trick pony--a very good pony, mind you. So I wanted a little more versatility as well as a tube amp for warmth and tube "dimensionality," if that makes sense. I was drawn to the Princeton Reverb after reading reviews of its wonderful tone. I also have a Fender Blues Jr., which really cranks. ANYWAY, what a great decision! I just love it. I've never heard my Gibson ES-175 sound so good. The amp seems especially sensitive to the way I play and responds well to the volume and tone controls on my guitar. It's super easy to shape the tone between my guitar and the very simple "treble" and "bass" controls on the amp. Of course, the reverb is great and I love the vibrato on ballads and slow blues. The Sweetwater edition of the Princeton Reverb is especially cool because of the 12" Eminence Cannibis Rex, a fabulous speaker in its own right, and clearly an extra here. (I'm not too crazy about the stock Jensen speakers.)

Another thing worth mentioning: I was first sent an amp with defective reverb. These things happen on occasion. I gave my "Sales Engineer" Josh Sackett a call, and he was on it immediately and made the exchange so easy and fast. Essentially, I had an amp on its way within a few hours with upgdraded shipping. I was also sent a label to use for the return: no need to print out my own, and I simply used the shipping materials to send the bummer amp back. Moral to the story: Sweetwater treats its customers (me, in any case) very well and they want to ensure that all is well with these kinds of purchases. And the candy is a nice touch!

I finally have my tone!

By Marty
Music Background: Guitar, piano, songwriting, record production, sound design

This is the sound I’ve been looking for!

I have access to Fender Twins, DR, HRD, etc, at my work, but I had been looking for a smaller combo that could deliver classic fender cleans while also overdriving nicely and not being overly heavy or large. I tried the Blues Jr, and although it’s a great amp, it didn’t have the classic fender chime. Same with the pro jr.

Im still breaking this in, but so far it does exactly what I’ve wanted. I primarily play les Paul’s with P90s, so I need an amp that can sound clean and jazzy and also dirty and rockin without too much effort. This Princeton stays crystal clean until around 4 on the dial, and starts to break up around 5. I haven’t been brave enough to go past 5 yet, that’s for later in the week. With the bass at 5 and the treble at 6, my guitar sounds perfectly balanced.

You really can’t get much simpler than this amp!

65 Princeton Tweed amp with 12inch eminence speaker

By Lonnie K. from Pennsylvania
Music Background: Playing guitar, electric and acoustic, for 57 years, and still love it!!

Seems every review I read for this amp got five stars, and I would like to add another five stars to the pile. I have been using fender amps, and guitars too, since 1975, and this is my first princeton, and it does not disappoint. I have been in hard rock bands, country and country rock bands, oldies and even wedding bands, and my fender amps always came shining thru. Now i have my trinity, a 65 twin, deluxe, and now Princeton. Life is good!

Finally! A Princeton That Sings.

By Robert S. from Madison WI

After owning 3 Princeton Reverbs previously, and being dissatisfied with the dark tone, I had given up ever finding one that really sounded like a Fender. While just browsing, I saw this amp and read a few reviews. It was obvious that this Princeton was different. After some additional research, I finally decided to take one more chance on this amp. After taking it to a session over the weekend, I feel comfortable saying the reviews are accurate. This amp is much different than any other Princeton I have played. Clean vintage Fender chime, and nice manageable dirt around 4.5 on the volume knob. Looks great with the tweed, and it's light to move. I am confident it could handle most gigs when mic'd. Great Fender reverb, and the 12" speaker gives it a voice that you'll be pleased with. The only complaint I have is the vibrato is weak. I am not a big vibrato guy so it doesn't bother me much, but guys who use it a lot might have an issue with it.

Stunning Amp

By Robert H. from Buellton, CA
Music Background: Professional

Okay, I've owned many amps including a '55 Deluxe (best amp ever made) various Princetons, Vibroverb, Vibrolux and too many to count. I needed an amp for small gigs that sounded good. This amp totally exceeded my expectations and I plan to use it from now on. Pure Fender tone with nice reverb & Trem. Quiet with no hum at all. My OCD pedal really shines with this amp especially with a spark behind it.
This thing is loud for its size. I will mic it for larger gigs. Mine breaks up around 7 with a Tele. Gretsch sounds best on the second input. I can get the exact "Wicked Game" tone with my Gretsch and this amp. The tweed is quality like the 50's amps. Great design Sweetwater!

After One Year

By Sweetwater Customer from Fairfax, VA
Music Background: Performance and recording

Great tone, reverb and tremolo. I use the tube rectifier at home or for recording, but pop in a solid state rectifier for live performance or group rehearsal. The solid state rectifier gives you faster response, and a little more clean volume.

It doesn't take my Mesa V-Twin pedal well. It seems as though this amp ignores the V-Twin bypass mode, and lets a little of the V-Twin through when I don't want it. However, the TS-9 works perfectly.

The audience loves the sound of this little amp. Of course, they are not ampaholics, but I listen to their feedback, and this amp is impressive. It also inspires my playing and composition.

For a real treat, set the Princeton on top of a 1x12 cabinet, connect the external speaker jack, and move more sonic air. It is a special treat. More volume, tighter bass, smoother mids and highs. This is the ultimate "mod".

I use a Mesa Thiele 1x12 with an EVM 12L speaker and the ported front. I mic the Mesa cabinet and rear of the Princeton, and get a huge onstage or studio sound. As an alternative, you can mic the front port of the Mesa for more airy highs. It is a unique and wonderful sound.

Play more music.

Good Choice

By Rick from Vicksburg Michigan
Music Background: 50 years. More serious the last 20.

I was 11 when I started learning to play in 1968. Forty dollars in nickels, dimes and quarters bought me a Norma guitar. In 97 bought a Marshall JTM30 and an Epiphone Dot and got back into playing. Amps after that were Marshall Bluesbreaker, JTM45, Mesa Express 5:50, Mark V. Some Dr.Z's. Bought a Fender 65 Deluxe Reverb. It was OK. But then I bought the Fender Thin line guitar. My son came over to check out the guitar, so I plugged him into the 65. First thing he did was put the amp on 6. I was blown away on how good that sounded! I kept the Express 5:50, the others are gone! I have two 65 Deluxe Reverbs, combo and head and a Fender 57 Pro. Then I picked up the 65 Princeton, tweed with 12" speaker. I am so hooked on Fender amps! Had a gig yesterday, outside on a lake. Used the Princeton and a Fender HotRod 1X12 cab loaded with an Eminence Swamp Thang.
This amp ROCKED! We should have mic'd, but didn't, area was smaller. Playing past 5 was too dirty, 4 1/2 cleaned it up and made it so I could still be heard. We played from Foo Fighters, Collective Soul, to Zac Brown and Dierks Bently. I really like the 65 Deluxe Reverb, but my new indoor amp will be the 65 Princeton. It's so much lighter! My outdoor will be the 57 Pro. I will recommend the 65 Princeton amp to anyone who asks!

I really can't say much more about this amp than what has already been said, well 1 thing!!! I f you don't have this amp you need too buy 1. The perfect tone, takes pedals well, delay, blues driver, ts9, which you really don't need, the reverb and tremolo is out of this world, at home I keep the volume between 3-4 plenty loud, by far the best amp I have owned a great match up with my Tele and Strat. Must Have Amp

By Layton S. from arlington, TX
Music Background: Intermediate amateur

After collecting every Fender amp from the Mustang 20, the Champ 40 and the Rumble 100, I finally got wise to myself and got this '65 Princeton.
That lacquered tweed is cool as all get out and it'll will blow the covers off those other speakers.
This one would be great for a guy who played smaller venues and still fits right in with my home music room collection.
Get you a set of those Xvive transmitters and walk around the house unfettered while you shred Al Green at high volume.
With the tubes inside, this brute heats up the chrome corner trim pieces, but man, that reverb and punch are built right in.
Thanks to Mike Morgan, as always, for a smooth purchase and delivery.

Love the ‘65 Princeton Rev Amp

By Randall from Music City U.S.A. (Nashville)

The Princeton Reverb was always on my wish list. I have two other Fender amps from the 90"s (40 Watt Custom Twin and "83 Super Champ). I just returned playing after years away.

I saw the limited Sweetwater edition with a Lacquered Tweed cover and 12" Eminence speaker. It is just perfect for a practice amp.

Special "Thanks" to Sweetwater and their sales rep, Ryan Brinkworth. The amp arrived in two days and ready for years of playing.

Everybody should have at least one Fender Princeton Reverb

By Music101Gear from Taylors Falls, MN

This little amp has amazing tone and touch. The reverb and tremolo really make it sing. It is completely noiseless (disclaimer: running on filtered/conditioned power). The 50 W Cannabis Rex speaker sounds great and I have used and liked this speaker before (I have the 16 ohm version in another cabinet - somewhere). But, I could not resist immediately replacing it with a Celestion Blue. The 15W Alnico speaker complements this amp nicely. I would think a 25W Alnico Jensen P12R would sound pretty good in it too. The 50 W ceramic magnet Cannabis Rex seems like it may be a bit too heavy for this amp, but it did sound good - just a different flavor.

Fender 65 Princeton Reverb

By Vic from Ocoee, FL
Music Background: retired professional musician

The amp looks really classy with the lacquered tweed covering. I like the fact that it doesn't weigh a ton like some of my amps. The Princeton is pretty loud. I'm using it as a platform for my pedalboard. I keep the volume anywhere from 4 to 5. It does its job well. I was nicely surprised with the amount of bottom end this little guy kicks out. It's a definite keeper.

Sweetwater bent over backwards to resolve a problem that wasn"t their fault. The amp won"t get Vibrato with a harp mic. Sent me another footswitch then a new amp. Luscious - initially too lush

By Grayhair G.

SUMMARY: Out of the box this is a sweet sounding lovely little amp, touch sensitive, and much louder than you might expect. And heavier, with that C. Rex 12" speaker. But it has some quirks and there's a definite learning curve for different guitars and pedals.

DETAILS
I've had a Blues Junior since about 2004. It was initially disappointing, but after tube swapping, speaker swapping, and most of the Bill M mods it's a very nice versatile amp. With master volume, mids tone control, added presence control, and a beefed up TO20B output transformer it can take just about any guitars or pedals you throw at it. With appropriate pedals I think it covers Fender, Vox, and Marshall tones pretty decently (but none perfectly). Having tried many 12" speakers for the BJ the best all-around for my ears is the Emi C. Rex - even better if it's in a 1x12 extension cab. But at the end of the day my BJ still doesn't quite have those sweet Fender Blackface cleans that I really like.

The sweetest-sounding amps I've ever heard were Deluxe Reverbs and Princeton Reverbs. About two years ago I picked up a Super Champ X2 head at a great price to experiment with, and it's been fun and educational. While the front end is solid state with digital modeling, the power section is real tubes (a 12AX7 phase inverter driving two 6V6 power tubes like a Princeton). After lots of A/B playing between the X2 and the BJ it was clear that I prefer the sound of 6V6s, bigger and sweeter sounding than EL84s. But while the X2 sounds good it doesn't sound as good as a real Princeton and Deluxe.

So when I recently came into a small bequest stipulating that it be spent on buying new gear (!) I started seriously shopping around again. After endless reading on the web and testing at local guitar stores I decided that a PRRI would be the best choice for me, mainly playing blues and classic rock at home at low volumes. Benefits vs. a DRRI were lower weight, lower power, and old-school tube-bias tremolo. But I've always been put off by the Princeton 10" speaker because I prefer the fuller sound of a 12"...plus there are many more 12" speakers to choose from for a potential speaker swap. So Sweetwater's FSR with 12" C. Rex speaker seemed ideal. And while you can't tell a book by its cover, that tweed covering is drop-dead gorgeous. I ordered it and waited a month or so for it to get in stock, then another week for delivery.

At first blush, with a Strat straight into the amp, fantastic! Luscious overtone-rich sweet cleans, more touch sensitivity than I ever imagined, and killer reverb and trem. This amp brings out wonderful Strat quack in 2 and 4 switch positions better than anything else I've played. Piano-like tones on the low E and A. And the touch sensitivity that brings out every nuance (and mistake!) But when I tried adding overdrive & distortion pedals there was initially too much high end, and things sounded fizzy. Then when I first tried humbucker guitars straight into the amp the sound was actually too rich, too many overtones, and the bass started to get a bit flubby when pushed. And even with no guitar plugged in, when I turn the reverb and/or trem up very high that caused some amp noise. I even took the new amp to a Fender-authorized service guy to see if it was defective, but he said it was performing perfectly, in fact rather quiet in his experience.

I'm happy to say that with some experience and experimentation I now have these issues nicely under control and I'm very happy with this great-sounding amp. For me, single-coil guitars sound best plugged into Input 1, while humbucker guitars sound best plugged into Input 2 (-6dB). Any setting above about 4-5 on the reverb knob is serious overkill, and below that there isn't any noise issue. Similarly, with a little restraint on the tremolo depth knob noise is no issue. If you're coming from an amp with 3 tone knobs, the old-style Fender 2-knob system takes some getting used to, but works effectively. Those 2 tone knobs need to be used judiciously - even at midrange (5) there's lot's of treble and bass. Setting both tone knobs low, even to 0, brings up the mids in relative terms and helps the amp take overdrive and distortion pedals just fine. Think "less is more" on those pedal settings, starting with the gain lower than you might be used to for other amps. And while I really like the tone, clarity, and versatility of the C. Rex speaker both clean and distorted, that hemp cone takes a lot of break in and can sound a little harsh initially...give it time and play a lot! My current preference is the internal C. Rex combined with a Celestion G12H30 in an external 1x12 cab, the amp sitting on top of the extension cab. Gives a big articulate 3D sound. But of course YMMV.

I look forward to NOT modifying this amp - I've had my fill with the Blues Junior. But perhaps just a few easy things after I've had more experience with the PRRI. I'm surprised that the stock Fender GT tubes sound as good as they do so I may not start serious tube-swapping for a while. But I will check the bias on the stock power tubes. Eventually I'm sure that some tube swapping will be worth it, especially for the first preamp tube V1 and the power tubes. In other amps I find I prefer the new Tungsol and Svetlana 12AX7s for V1 - Svetlana a little sweeter and lower gain, Tungsol somewhat more aggressive, but both very musical. I might also try a 5751 or 12AY7 for V1 to reduce preamp gain and emphasize power amp distortion (remember that there's no master volume on the PRRI). In my X2 I like the sound of Tungsol reissue 6V6GT power tubes the best (12W, traditional Fender 6V6 blackface tone, a smooth blusey breakup). But I'm also curious to try the JJ 6V6S (14W, a bigger louder sound reputed to be more like 6L6 tubes). And lastly, if I find I don't like the traditional Princeton loose low end in distortion, I might replace the output transformer with a TO20 from Dave Allen. An inexpensive and easy mod, drop in replacement, and a TO20 tightened up the bass significantly in my Blues Junior. But meanwhile I need to play more, and fiddle less!

After a year....still absolutely awesome

By Todd S.

If you are like me, you stop here once ever once and a while - you always have a new 'need it'. Sometimes you have the ability to buy it and when you don't, you just look at for the hundredth time.

I bought this amp more than a year ago and I've purchased a 57 custom deluxe since then. I still come back to this amp. It's tone is out of sight, light enough to travel, loud enough to jam for band rehearsal. It's a rare breed that sounds so very good at low volumes you can play late night but still crank in a rehearsal setting. With the 12 inch speaker I consider this in my head as a mini deluxe. I've owned two fender deluxe reverbs but ended up selling them because I didn't need the 2 channels. The comparison isn't entirely fair because I much prefer the tremolo (vibrato) on this to that found on a fender deluxe - it's far more organic and musical. That is also true for the reverb. I have had zero issues with this amp. This amp sits 'in the mix' wonderfully in a band scenario but somehow still manages to cut when it has too. I typically set the volume to 5 or 6 and use the volume know on my guitar to level for the band. When I want to cut through for a lead I use the volume know on my guitar - I hate pedal dancing.

If you like pedals, you don't need them with this amp (depending on the tone you are after) but I have to mention that an OCD boosted using a standard boost or even a tube screamer in front of the OCD will give you soaring lead tones on this Princeton with incredible sustain.

The tweed cosmetic is a bonus. Of all the amps I've owned in my 30 years playing this is without a doubt the one I'd be sure to have in my collection. If it were lost or stolen I'd buy a new one immediately even if I have to pay for it incrementally on the Sweetwater card.

Band rehearsal last night with this inspired me to write this review after long consideration and time with the Princeton Reverb!

A Miracle in Tweed

By Sweetwater Customer

Big fat tight bottom and chimey, jangley highs. The reverb is incredibly beautiful.
Serious 3D tone everywhere.
It's exactly what you wanted it to sound like.... Only way better.
Takes pedals great, but a Tele plugged straight in is simply amazing.
Ive had it 3 days and I still cant believe how sweet this amp sounds. - 5 stars is not enough.

Yup, it's my perfect amp

By Alex

Normally I'm a bit skeptical when I read SO MANY 5 Star reviews, but honestly it deserves it.

Years ago I owned a Princeton, stupidly sold it, but I still missed that surreal lush tone (I seriously would think about it from time to time). I also used to have a tweed Blues Jr. and miss its gorgeous yellow tweed. Even my gf said that thing was cool. I sold both but still regretted letting that Princeton go. Then, years later, I saw THIS....

Having gone through about 10 different amps I can safely say this gives me the most joy to play. It inspires me to pick up my guitar so much more. It sounds sublime, even at bedroom levels, and is the best looking amp I've ever seen. The 12" CRex speaker makes it versatile for smaller gigs too. It takes pedals well and has a wide range of tones on its own- god that reverb tone is heaven.

I've since sold everything except this and the Yamaha THR10 for when I want to play with headphones on at night. They're a great combo!

The only thing I did on this was install a Dr Z Brake Lite Attenuator (setting 2) to drive the amp more at quieter bedroom levels (playing at volume 5 when it sounds like it's on 2.25 is astounding!!!). If you want to truly take it to god-tier levels, install some NOS tubes, especially in the v1 and v2 slots (they'll last longer too)!

Seriously this is the best amp purchase I've ever made. And the lady likes it too :p

So happy with this amp!

By Sweetwater Customer from Grand Haven, MI

I've been a fan of Fender for a long time. My main amp was a silverface Twin Reverb. After awhile, it was a lot of work to lug around to practices and shows. I then set out to get a smaller combo that would suit my needs. I found the Princeton on Sweetwater and it seemed to have everything I wanted. As an added bonus it looked awesome with it's tweed exterior! I love this amp, it's got everything I was looking for. Lightweight, loud, and great tone. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Trust them 110 voices. This does not happen often/ever.

Synergy. Pine cab, sweet speaker, circuits spot on, lotsa tubes.

Zero/no overhead noise. None. Folks pay big $$ for that.

This amp is SO easy to dial in...any style/tone of music.

Tweed. No imposter, but the original purveyor of tweed amps.

Buy once, smile for ever. Period. You will never regret.

PS : if you want, upgrade to a matched TungSol set of tubes.

Hmmm...110 5 star reviews... here's something new...!~}

By Sweetwater Customer

Greetings Folks and join me.......,

I purchased a 65 PRRI late last year. Mike Soper the best !!

I'm a 60yr old guy/gentleman/kid from New England. Well.
I never owned a 'Take my breath away' tube amp before.

So here are my thoughts....or rather, thought, singular.

This amp stock is so easy to dial in and capture your tone.
Takes about 10-15 seconds. From punk to reggae, about 10-15 seconds. Zeppelin to Gordon Lightfoot, about 10-15sec.

Note a pattern here : superb tone (and volume !!!) takes no time to find, adjust n set. I sit blind to my amp panel. Lean over, and change tone, reverb, trem/vibro and volume. Each adjustment with satisfying results.

So many home tones, just one amp, just one source.

Toss your pedals, live with a USA Strat, cable n 65 PRRI. You will become a better player. A much better player. There are 10,000 analog combos (all tube-driven/rectified) of tone and effects (Fender knows tube reverb and tremelo in their amps) in this single, sweer, tweed, 34 pound masterpiece.

peace to each and all

Great little amp.

By J.

When I recently joined an acoustic rock band as the guy who played electric for leads and texture, it became immediately obvious that my Friedman rig was going to be a bit too too much for the format. Enter this little beauty. Warmer than a security blanket, and smooth as silk. Luscious reverb and swampy tremolo vibe. Easy to dial in, and very receptive to pedals, this thing solved all my tonal problems instantly, and despite hearing peoples say to the contrary, plenty of headroom to spare. It does have a touch of darkness, which was a plus to me as I don't enjoy an overly bright clean, a reason I avoided fender amps for years. And with the tweed covering, its not too hard on the eyes either. Or the back at either at 34 pounds. If you're on the fence, give it a try. It might not be for everyone, but Im pretty picky about gear and this was a great fit for me. And as always, Sweetwater knocks it out of the park with exceptional service and fast free shipping. You have nothing to lose! I've been a repeat customer here for years; guitars, amps and effects, they go out of their way to make sure you are 100% satisfied with every purchase.

Yea! Great little amp

By Brad D. from Elk Grove, CA
Music Background: Mid level player, played ryhthm for year or so with a small band.

I was getting tired of lugging around 50 pounds of screaming Hot Rod Deville 410 and wanted something that could give me great tone, but at a decibel level that wouldn't melt my face off, and be easy to transport. I tried the Blues Deluxe, Blues Jr and the stock Princeton. Princeton won the weight and decibel race but I was concerned that the 10" just wouldn't give me the bass response I was used to with the cabinet 410. This 12" Cannabis Rex Princeton sounded like it might do the trick and it does. Terrific tone, excellent volume when I want it and while it doesn't have the boom of the 410, it is not lacking in bottom end. Really nice combination of tone, size and power.

Shawn Fitzgerald @ Sweetwater again did a great job helping with my endless questions and "when is it going to get here" emails. Thank you Shawn! Tell your boss to give you a raise and go home early!

BEST AMP I've EVER OWNED

By Jerry from Austin, TX

And I've had a few over the last 50 years. Peavy. Fender, Tube. Solid State. Big. Small. Medium. They all have a place in the musical universe, But if you're just looking for a sweet sounding amp that will do what 95% of us are wanting an amp to do, you can get it right here in this 1x12 Princeton. I've had mine for a few weeks now. and I like it more every time I play it. 12" speaker is a big improvement IMHO. No, it's not the cheapest tube amp you can buy, but you get what you pay for.
Just want to say thanks to Jeff for getting me to pre order. Only a couple of weeks wait. Also appreciate the follow up call. Great service!

Perfect amp?

By John G. from Louisville, KY

The 12" speaker makes a massive difference. Rich, smooth, and deeper low end, and the amp is more open and airy than the 10" version. Excellent for jazz and clean blues.

Mr

By Tom P.

A truly amazing amp! Sensitive to your attack, super clean to well defined distortion and everything in between. Reverb and Trem are just right. I am a pedal guy; I have 9 pedals on my board for my Hot Rod Deluxe III, but no pedals for this amp are required and will not be used.

American Deluxe Strat with a Shawbucker and this amp is all you need for the most wonderful range of sounds you can imagine. In the studio or mic'ed on stage, this is the real thing.

I went back and forth between several of the Fender tube amps of this size and my Sales Engineer Brad helped me weave through the models and his great advice led to this home-run selection.

Sweetwater is the absolute best for selection, advice, delivery and guitar setups. I've bought several high-end guitars from Sweetwater and they have been perfect.

Get it while you can

By Paul from New Hampshire
Music Background: Pro

I typically use mid-size 40- or 50-watt, 1x12 combos (Currently have a Carvin Nomad, Fender Blues Deluxe and Marshall DSL-40C), but have also owned and sold everything from a full Marshall Super Lead 100 stack, a couple of Fender Twin Reverbs and Deluxe Reverbs over the past 53 years. Never had a Princeton because I am not a fan of 10" speaker amps. I saw this Special Edition with the 12" C-Rex speaker and jumped on it. Best decision I ever made. This is THE amp. Plenty loud with massive tone and classic Fender clean. I love how good my P-90 Gibson Les Paul Classic sounds through this, can"t beat the all-tube reverb and vibrato. Portable, too. I plan on using it for band rehearsals and most gigs and can mic it for bigger venues if needed. Sweetwater and Fender hit a grand slam with this.

Expensive, but worth it.

By David from Virginia
Music Background: Hobbyist

I read all the reviews here before purchasing this amp so my expectations were pretty high. I play an American Standard Strat with Fat 50's through it and I"ll just say if there's a better clean tone out there I'd sure like to hear it. I"m not a huge fan of the way my Les Paul sounds through it yet, but with time I"ll get there. This is a fairly expensive item and a bit of a splurge for me but it's probably the last amp I'll ever need to buy. I think that many, like me, would have been better off by just getting this amp early on instead of buying a bunch of others trying to find the tone you really like, because this is probably where you"ll end up anyway. I get together with my friends frequently to play through our list of jazz standards and blues numbers and this amplifier sounds great for that. The build quality is good, the controls feel nice, it"s not too heavy to haul around, and it sounds great. Highly recommended.

I needed a smaller amp as my Twin Reverb was an accident waiting to happen when going up and down flights of stairs. This amp weighs half as much and sounds great. Still breaking in the speaker but I am very happy with it. The tweed is an awesome bonus, and it's only available from Sweetwater.

Princeton As It Should Have Been

By Sweetwater Customer from Arlington, TN
Music Background: Played guitar for 50+ years. Rock, blues, country.

I have Fender 57 Twin and a 60"s black face VIBROCHAMP... Both are tone machines. This amp is a fantastic addition to my Fender lineup. The 12" speaker makes a HUGE difference over the regular Princeton. This amp is surprisingly LOUD. A really, really good loud. Turn it down to 4 or below and you STILL get great tone and can use it in small to medium settings.

Only available at Sweetwater... get one while you can. Glad I did.

Search Over for the Perfect Small Amp

By Raleigh from TN

I spent weeks scouring the internet for the perfect small amp before finding the Limited Edition '65 Princeton Reverb. It fills the gap between the 12W, 1x10 original and the Deluxe Reverb perfectly. My only wishes would be for a period correct, black and silver option, and an explanation of the output rating difference (12W vs 15W) for seemingly identical circuits.

Delighted! Don't hesitate to buy one of these instant classics from Fender

By Matt J. from Cincinnati, OH
Music Background: 40+ years of dusty basements, sweaty stages, and occasional cornfield.

Looking to downsize a bit, but still wanting something powerful enough for practices and bar gigs, I found the perfect candidate in the '65 Princeton 1x12. I've owned more than a couple dozen amps in my 40+ years of playing, half of them being Fenders, and this new Princeton lives up to the great reputation of classic Fender tube amps.

I've always been partial to the cleaner sounding 1x12 or 2x10 combos, as they provide just the right amount of breakup, are portable and take pedals well. I recently bought a vintage 60s Fender blackface Champ which is absolutely glorious, but still need more than its output and 8-inch speaker can provide for live and practice situations. I've had one Princeton Reverb previously, a mid-70s model that was a dream to play through: creamy, jangly and still provided low end spank. I also ad a '65 Deluxe Reverb reissue a couple of years ago and really didn't care for the harsh high end and it really seemed to lack any presence in the tone section.

Having read the reviews on this new Sweetwater-exclusive model with the Cannabis Rex 1x12 and it is just the ticket to provide everything you need in a combo, from thump to sparkle. creamy mids, nice and light weight, and operates quietly. I couldn't be more pleased. It really is the perfect 'Goldilocks' choice between the instant fun of the mighty Champ and the '65 DRRI.

The only thing that I would suggest to improve it is that the finish of the lacquered tweed is a bit grainy--I really wish Fender would create the waxier, vintage-style lacquer tweed look when they wrap their amps with this type of covering, but really this a minor complaint, and it is still a quality finish that should hold up for years to come.

Love it!

UPGRADED MY SET UP!

By Jeremy D. from NYC
Music Background: Avid hobbyist, soon gigging

I upgraded my home practice area with this amp because I always wondered what I was missing only using solid state "practice amps". The difference is the tuber is alive. This amp is beautiful in everyway. I never used reverb much and certainly not vibrato but a lot of my favorite artists do (Jonestown,Black Angels..) Compared to my Orange 35RT(which is awesome) this amp is warmer, fuller, and alive. The reverb is more a place than a sound. The vibrato is inspiring me to play out of my normal routine. Just a totally awesome, beautiful playing companion. So glad I bought one. I was worried I would not gain anything from it playing at apartment volume a lot of the time. I was pleasantly surprised. I use a TS-9 to add dirt when needed. Sounds super. My Strat sounds soo much better out of this amp. My PRS S2 Single Cut is divine out of this amp. I had ordered a demo that ended up DOA. I spoke to my rep Shelby and he set me up with a tech. Spoke to tech on a Saturday, the brand new amp was at my door Monday. No extra charge for it being a new one and they didn't even wait to get the dud back. I'm sure it was a loose tube or something. Any way, Sweetwater delivers always and so does the Princeton. Cheers.

Absolutely Incredible!

By Cid from Seattle
Music Background: Semi-Pro

I've owned quite a few amp (all tubes for the past 10 years), but for some reason never a Fender. With the assistance of Nick Church and a little back and forth, I was able to narrow my selections down, and then finally decide on this gem by Fender! Most of my amps (up to this point), have really focused primarily on their gain profiles, and all but neglect the cleans. This amp corrects that, and it does so in spades! The punch, and the sweetness of the tone, while the amp is perfectly clean, is quite amazing. The bass is strong, without becoming muddy, and the treble is transparent without being piercing. Overall, I'm totally satisfied with my purchase, and Nick was totally right... give him a raise!

1 Year Review

By TMats from Cheyenne

I decided to wait before writing this. The truth is, the amp was not flawless. The first I returned because the jewel light did not work. This amp was also a bit noisy; it had a noticeable hum. As always, Sweetwater is easy to work with on returns. The second had a problem with the connection at the fuse in the back. I"d push on the fuse holder and the amp would come to life, then it became worse. I jury rigged a fix with a piece of ball point pen spring (I guess, at this point I was just reluctant to send a second amp back to Sweetwater—silly of me).

Finally, I just couldn"t get it to work and I called Fender. They"re just as great to work with as the folks at Sweetwater. They arranged for me to send the amp to a Fender authorized amp tech, and he fixed it completely and perfectly.

So, problems with 2 amps, yet I only subtract 1/2 star for the issues? Yeah. It"s a great, great amp. This one has almost no hum whatsoever. It"s chimey, spanky, sparkling and growly, and it"s beautiful to look at. It (obviously) loves single-coils, but sounds great with humbuckers too.

Thinking of the issues I had with the amp(s) in the beginning...there"s a scene near the end of the movie Jeremiah Johnson. He encounters Bear Claw Chris Lapp (his mentor when he first went up into the high country) on a late winter day. Lapp asks, "Were it worth the trouble?"
Jeremiah cocks his head slightly, "Eh, what trouble?" is his reply. Describes my feeling for this amp, troubles are all forgotten now.

The perfect 15 Watt.

By Stephen L. from NJ

I've been playing through this for about a month now and couldn't be happier. I wasn't crazy about the Eminence speaker so I swapped it out for a Celestion Alnico Blue and now it really shines. I also have a 65 DRRI and depending the environment I'm playing I go back and forth between the two amps. It is nice having the extra headroom and low end with the DR, but its great having the sweet tone of a Princeton pushed just to the point of breakup without blowing your ears.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I was flip flopping for weeks trying to decide between the DR or PR (which I inevitably got both) and I think its worth noting that the tremolo between the two amps is completely different. The Princeton has a smoother "sine wave" tremolo while the Deluxe has a choppier "triangle wave" tremolo. Both sound VERY nice in my opinion and I just thought it was worth noting because I did not see anyone mention this before in anything I've read. The reverb between the two is comparable.

Brilliant tone, epic reverb, great amp

By William W. from Covington, WA
Music Background: Surf, metal, blues

Now this is a great amp! I picked up a demo and saved a little money (and you'd never know it was a demo - it looks and sounds brand new). I play a 1982 '57 Reissue Stratocaster through it doing mostly Surf music...and wow, this is amazing. The sound is full and shimmers with that classic Fender tone. The spring reverb is way beyond adequate. It's deep and a little dark, contrasting nicely against that Fender shimmer. Tremolo is what you would expect - providing a perfect effect for the kind of music I play. The 12" speaker brings out the lows very well, expanding the low end range a little more than the 10". Excellent!

Update Review

By Art M. from CA
Music Background: Hobbyist, for 18 years, play on worship band and at local gigs.

I did a review shortly after my purchase and wanted to update after having used the amp heavily since then. I play weekly on our church worship team as an Electric 2 guitarist. We do a lot with pedals and contemporary Christian music. I run stereo and will couple my Tweed with my 68 Custom Princeton Reverb as we run through our house system and the combination of the two 15 watt amps provides a LOT of volume and tone. I have a pedal board with several pedals that I combine at any given time for a particular song. I have been SUPER PLEASED with the performance of this Princeton Tweed amp. The Cannabis Rex speaker is breaking in very nice and has great tone.

I run Fender Strats, Tele's, Gretsch's, and Gibson's through the amp and enjoy the different; yet sweet tone that comes out of this amp.

Lastly, the Tweed cabinet and grill cloth and overall exterior appointments are gorgeous. I hope that if you are looking for a small; yet powerful little amp that you can lug around easily, and an amp that will give you plenty of volume (with or without a PA system), then give this amp a try from Sweetwater. They often offer a wonderful payment via their credit card that is interest free if you pay off with the allotted time. Can't beat that, along with the Customer service, free ship and "Candy".

Great Amp!

By Cory P. from Knoxville TN
Music Background: Worship Leader and many other bands

This amp is great. The Headroom with the 12 inch Cannabis Rex was surprising when I compared to the standard 10 inch Jensen. If you are using pedals, the extra headroom will be really beneficial to you, but if you aren't and you are wanting the natural breakup from the amp, it has to get really loud before you get there. The Cannabis Rex is a little warmer that the Jensen, which I prefer, but won't be for everyone. You kind of know what you're getting when you buy a Fender amp, and this one is no exception. Pick one up!

Great Little Amp

By Dennis from S.F. bay area
Music Background: Started play guitar in 1958

When I ordered this amp my wife said I already had too many amps. Can you imagine ? That's like saying I have too many guitars. Such things just aren't possible.
I've only had this amp for a week now and only put about 20 hours on it so far. Its rapidly becoming my favorite practice amp. It doesn't matter if I plug in a newer strat or a vintage Les Paul, the sound is sweet and will only get better with time. I have a funny feeling my other practice amps are going to spend a lot of time under their dust covers from now on.

ME SO HAPPY

By Brian from Jacksonville, Florida
Music Background: advanced guitarist

I have owned a 10" speaker PRRI and several other Fender amps ... and I do currently love my Vibrolux Custom Deluxe Reverb ... it is my prime go to gig amp.

But this Princeton with the 12" Cannabis Rex is really sweet. I am not going to say it is "better" than the 10" version (which I had a Celestion Gold, Eminence Legend, Allessandro 10" and other speakers in). But I will say I prefer this one with the 12 ... it has more "ummmph" and strength in the lower end - and the speaked is not even broken in! The Cannabis Rex is a hint less Fendery than the 10s I had in the other PRRI, but it works very well in this amp and I am going to give it several months to break in ... I think the speaker will be a keeper for it!

Otherwise, the fact this amp is a good bit lighter, is also a huge plus. Big, strong, Fender tone and not a back-breaker like a Twin or even a DRRI.

I am quite sure this is a keeper. Thanks Mike Soper!

Smooth

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: 30 years of experience

I looked at this amp for a couple years. I finally made the purchase. The smoothness of this amp has the single note lead lines flow very nicely. The sound after 4 gets a nice edge to the tone. If you do not have a vintage reissue Fender, I highly recommend this amplifier. This could be exactly what you are looking for, if you don't want to use pedals. No pedals needed. I'm sure having this amp is making me want to practice more, as I'm getting the tone I've always wanted without totally blowing out the volume. I love this Fender amp with this speaker! Blues, the way we are used to sounding!

Fender Mojo

By Mike from Chicago, IL
Music Background: Whatever floats my boat that day

I ordered this amp because my old ears needed something mellower than my Marshalls to listen to. This is exactly what the doctor ordered. My strat sounds amazing through this amp. It really sings. The reverb is great. The only thing that would make it any better would be an effects loop, but I knew it didn't have one going in so I can't fault it for that. I really love the sound of this amp. Fender has a winner in this one.

One other note: the cover that comes with it is pretty decent. The fender logo is even embroidered on it instead of silk-screened or whatever. Also, my gf says it looks so nice she doesn't mind me leaving it in the living room all the time. It is a handsome little amp for sure!

I was hesitant to spend the $... for a 15 watt practice amp, but after plugging in and hearing it for myself I don't think I'll ever regret adding it to my collection. It's my favorite amp now.

The reviews here are legit

By X

I've been interested in trying out this amp for at least one or two years but I never pulled the trigger. There is nearly 0 demo of this amp, which is the major reason I didn't buy one until now. I've gone through many amps since the first day I knew about this amp until I bought one.

I bought this amp as a demo at first. After one weeks of waiting, it arrived being non-functional at all. No one was home to sign the package and I missed the first shipping attempt. Eventually, I had to ask someone to stay home and sign it for me. After a long day at work, I came home with excitement and was ready to try out this amp and it turned out to be defective. I was really not happy. (In the meantime, I also bought another demo boutique amp from SW that was also defective) SW accidentally included two amp covers but since the amp wasn't working, covers meant nothing to me. By the way, the amp cover feels really cheap, and I'd rather not use it so I can look at the beautiful tweed as an eye candy.

I emailed SW and they sent me a replacement that arrived in three days. Shout out to Anthony and Emma.Tube amps are fragile. The longer they stay in the delivery truck the more likely that they will arrive damaged. Someone in my house was off that day and I was able to get the amp no later than three days.

This is actually my first fender amp. I am huge fender fan but I never owned any fender amps because they are too loud to use at home. I usually only buy boutique amps because they have good attenuators. I tried a few limited edition PR at local stores and found that the PR might be used at home at a manageable volume. Normally, volume at 2 on the deluxe reverb is too loud for my place. With the PR, I can turn it up to 5 but that's as loud as I can go.

The amp stays clean until volume goes to 5, which is okay for me because I am not looking for a Two Rock type of clean. When the volume is at 2, if I put a drive pedal in the front, the amp becomes SUPER loud. Is this a bedroom amp? It can be when you don't use pedals. If you don't want to annoy your neighbors, you probably need to use input 2 when you use pedals. Lots of people don't like input 2 but I personally like it. For input 1, you probably will have to constantly adjust the volume on your pedals if you live in a small place.

The 12" speaker makes a big difference. Personally, I won't buy the standard PR due to the smaller speaker. This SW edition PR just sounds better and also has plenty of bass.

Also, I guess the tweed finish on this amp can age. The first demo I got has a much darker and dirtier tweed than the replacement SW sent me later on.

While this thing costs almost the same amount of money as the SW edition deluxe reverb, I prefer this one because it looks better and it is very light weight. More importantly, it sounds good too.

Wow!

By AR

I had been wanting to upgrade to a tube amp for sometime, and after doing a bit of research, I decided to go with the Princeton 65 Reverb. I am not disappointed. Great sounds and remarkable smooth tone from this little amp. Reverb seems solid, but I am still playing around with the vibrato/reverb switch and settings. She has plenty of power, especially with the 1x12 in this limited edition, and is perfect for practicing. Absolutely love the tweed!

ONE OF MY BEST PURCHASE DECISIONS, EVER!

By Randall F.

I've been playing guitar now for nearly 40-years, and over that period of time, I've probably bought and sold (or in some cases, still own) a total of about 25-30 different tube amps, both heads and combos. In fact, I still own the following ten amps:

Fender Deluxe Reverb
Fender Deluxe (Tweed)
Tone King Imperial
Carr Rambler
Redplate Blackverb
Orange Rocker-30
Goodsell Super-17
Magnatone 280
Magnatone 480
and Mesa-Boogie Studio Pre-amp (rack mounted) with 50:50 stereo power amp

But right outta the box, I can honestly say that this humble little Princeton Reverb is as rich, chimey and quiet as any amp I've ever owned, and perhaps the most 'special' thing about it is how truly organic it sounds. Too often, the mass-produced Fender combos are artificial or synthetic, almost 'sterile' sounding. Not so with this Limited Edition Princeton Reverb. It is an absolute "keeper" and worth every penny that I paid for it. Kudos to Sweetwater for making this custom little jewel available to its patrons.

The Right Stuff

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Very long time Musician, retailer and service tech

This limited edition issue for Sweetwater of the '65 PR is a winner. The addition of the 12" Eminence Cannabis Rex was excellent and adds the bass response with just the right amount of breakup with added volume that I've wanted from Princeton style amps. I've been playing Fender tube type amps since the early 60's, also sold my share of them as a music store owner in the 90's...add to that, being a, now retired, amp service tech for well over 50 years, I've learned a thing or two about what makes a good tube amp, and in particular a good sounding Fender tube amp. The team up of Fender and Sweetwater on this limited edition offering hits a homerun in my book. It takes pedals very, very well and has such classic looks that it's hard to feel good about the purchase each time I pass by this amp in my studio. The cover they included is nicer than expected as well. Highly recommended.

Prince of an Amp!

By Fred from Deep South
Music Background: Long time weekend warrior

This is the best sounding amp I have had in a long time and I've had some nice amps. It really surprised me how good it sounds. I've heard the new Princetons with the 10" speaker but had not heard one with the 12" until I received this amp. The 12" speaker makes a big difference and this one is a good choice for this amp. This is also the first amp I have had in a while that does not have a "middle" control for EQ and I like that a lot. Treble and bass seem to be plenty of EQ and it is very easy to dial in a good sound. The tweed look and all is very well done - nice fit and finish overall.

Exactly What I've Been Waiting For!!!

By Bryon W. from Tucson AZ
Music Background: Country, Rock and Blues

I've been playing guitar for 40+ years, and I've played in a couple of bands over those years. However I have mostly played for myself during the majority of that time. And I've always had solid state amps because of the price of tube amps compared to the solid state ones. Dumb I know!!! And honestly the amps I played through did pretty well. But I never had the tone I was looking for, and knew I wouldn't get that tone unless I stepped up and went tube. So finally I saw this amp offered here at Sweetwater and knew this was what I've been looking for. I had considered the Blues Junior because of all the rave reviews it has had for a couple of decades. But for some reason I just never pulled the trigger on buying one. But I digress...
Literally the first time I played through this amp was at a memorial of and friend of mine that recently passed away in a car crash. He was a former member of Merle Haggard's band and was a great trumpet player! At the memorial there were a multitude of true pro players doing a jam for my friend. And after the memorial they all told me how great I sounded!!! An ultimate compliment!!! And I honestly think this amp made the difference. I've played with several of these guys before and they all told me I've never sounded better!!! Now it looks like I'm going to start gigging again and this amp will be my workhorse!!! It sounds great through my Epi Sheraton Pro II and my Strat. Let the fun begin!!!

Big Disappointment

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Professional Musician and Guitar Teacher

I love the looks-but was I looking for tone. This amp sounds thin and anything toneful. I was so disappointed. Overall-it's great looking, but heavy to carry for it's size, and adding pedals didn't help that much. It's also got a loud noise floor so it's not my choice for recording. Sorry, it didn't work for me.

That's How A Guitar Should Sound

By Jon from El Paso, TX
Music Background: Worship Band and wherever needed

I've played guitar since 1965 and my very first good amp was a 1968 Fender Princeton Reverb. All my guitar playing buddies wanted to borrow that amp and now I being reminded why I felt like the king of the hill with that Princeton. My musical journey has included a lot of wonderful guitars and amps. My current number 1 guitar is a Don Grosh ElectraJet Custom with three of Don's G-90 pickups (a mega-fat Strat sound) and I desperately desired an amp to bring out the very best of that guitar. I also have to confess that in recent years I followed the herd to abandoning tube amps and using digital substitutes. That didn't work out so well. As much as I hated replacing vacuum tubes, the processed world really lacked warmth and life for me. I had to get back to a classic amp or quit playing the electric guitar.

Well, prices have truly sky-rocketed since my last purchase of a tube amp (2010), so I went on a search for the best new amp (avoiding glitches with used gear) in the $1000 range. The sales rep' at Sweetwater encouraged me to pursue the Princeton that I mentioned held my interest, and I have no regrets.

The '65 has all the clean headroom I was looking for and that wonderful vibrato I remembered from my teen years. No amp brings out the great tone of single coil pickups like an American Fender. I've had boutique amps and they were great too, but I like the solid traditional sound found in this well built Fender (and one easy for a geezer to carry). It loves pedals and I see quality in this amp that past Fenders were missing. Jazz, rock and country all shine through this amp. Don't worry that it doesn't have a mid-range control, it's not needed. The speaker sounds great and I know it with sound even smoother as it gets broken it.

Thanks Sweetwater for the perfect choice in my return to tube amplifiers.

So in my 53rd year of being a player, I'm getting back to my roots and I'm glad I did.

Buyer Beware!

By Sweetwater Customer

I purchased this amp really wanting to love it, especially since there are so many awesome reviews listed on this website. I was hoping for an amp that produces great clean and blues tones. Instead you get an amp that is so loud that any tangible good tones will come at the cost of going deaf and/or disturbing everyone in a few hundred meter radius. In hindsight, there were a few indicators that should have tipped off some extra investigation. First, there is no product video for this amp on the product page, just a general Fender amp video. Being a signature model only found on sweetwater you would assume they would highlight what makes their amp different (and better) than what is found elsewhere. Second, the 12" speaker instead of the normal 10" usually found on this amp. If this amp is a louder version of the normal version then it should be marketed as such so people know what they are buying.

To prevent from going deaf, I had to keep this amp at 3 or less on the volume dial. In this zone it did produce some remarkable clean tones. To get any dirt, I was forced to use my tube screamer (because I couldn't turn it up to push the tubes), again being particularly careful to dial the pedal back to ensure the amp didn't blow out my eardrums. I felt using this amp was a constant battle to try and find a sweet spot in the first three volume dial positions to get any decent tone. Change from clean to dirty, battle to rebalance tone with volume. Change guitars or even pickup combos, battle to rebalance tone with volume. I spend more time battling with tone vs volume than enjoying playing my guitar.

If you are a person looking for a super-loud, clean amp then this may be the amp for you. Just be aware you will always be on the razor's edge of volume vs tone and contantly rebalancing instead of enjoying playing. Else you will be making yourself go deaf and angering everyone around you to get any tones above the "3" on the volume nob.

Extremely Pleased

By A. M. from California
Music Background: Hobbyist and worship guitarist

I previously purchased a Fender 68 Custom Princeton Reverb through Sweetwater (after all, where else would someone want to purchase their gear with the interest free payoff and the CANDY!!!)

After reading other reviews and Google researching and YouTubing samples of what this amp could/would do, I took the plunge. I've only had the amp a few weeks now but have used it at church in stereo with the 68 Custom Princeton and absolutely LOVE the combination. These are powerful little amps, and when mic'd through the church PA produce a wonderful tonal blend.

Although not broken in as yet, but Cannabis Rex speaker in the Tweed Princeton sounds great. So much so that I will likely order a Cannabis Rex for my Blues Junior.

The reverb and the tremelo I don't really use as I run through my Strymon BigSky and Flint. These two amps mentioned take pedals perfectly as advertised. So if you are looking for a small, powerful yet pleasing to the ear tones when dialed down, I work easily recommend the Fender Princeton Tweed. It also has great visual appeal, easy to lug around, and comes with an amp cover.

I got the Fender Princeton 65 reissue with the 1x12 Canabis Rex a little over a week ago. I am impressed. Plenty of tone and power... doesnt get dirty til volumne at 5. The reverb is beautiful, especially along with the vibrato. I put a Tumnus in front for some dirt at lower volume. I am very happy, Thanks Chris

Big Disappointment

By Jeff A. from Boca Raton, FL
Music Background: Music Teacher and weekend performer

I'm sorry to rain on the parade! So many people have written glowing remarks on this amp... Ok-here's the good: It looks nice. Here's the bad: It's heavy to carry-It's noisy idling-the reverb didn't work on mine (thank goodness-then I could send it back)-it sounded very very THIN. This was with a Les Paul and then a Strat-neither sounded good. It was not what I had envisioned at all-I wanted big-fat-juicy. It was tinny and not inspring at all-with or without pedals-very blah. Not even a good platform for pedals-I wanted to like it SOOO badly-what a disappointment.

I always wanted a PR, but never got around to it in my 55 yrs of performing. Duh. Great amp. Loves all my pedals...great bottom end...great chime. I've got other amps that are hand wired, but with this portable amp, I can be a chameleon. And it keeps up with my drummer, Sluggo, just fine.

Princeton Reverb smokes!

By Chris from Jackson NJ
Music Background: Classic Rock 40 yes playing

I have been playing and searching for the ultimate bar band amp for 30 plus years! I have a room full of quality tube amps all have a place. But this little amp is the bomb! From AC/DC to Country I can do it all! I even got rid most of pedals. I never push it past 5 and that"s with a loud band. It stays clean until 6 than it breaks up nicely though but too loud past 5 for small to mid size venues. I push it with a Fulltone Fulldrive 2. It produces any classic rock, blues, or country sound needed with a flick of volume and boost switchan. I am an addicted tone chaser and my set up just got smaller and simple. Fender strats and Teles sound best but Gibson"s or other humbucker guitars sound good also. The bottom is very convincing and gives it a nice fat thick tone must be the 12 inch speaker. The reverb is the best and most useable of any of my Fender amps. Just buy one!

Lightweight, simple, looks great, takes pedals well, sounds awesome and plenty loud for just about any gig!

Buy it!

By RJ H. from Flint, MI
Music Background: 40+ Years playing and recording

I have a variety of amps including Marshall, Fender, Rivera, Egnater and Ampeg. This little amp quickly found a special place in both my heart and in my studio. It sounds equally great clean set on 2, breaking up around 4 and dimed. The natural compression is wonderful, but it also a very dynamic amp. With this amp you can go "old school" by diming the amp and controlling how clean the amp gets with the volume pot on your guitar and by your playing style. The tone is extraordinary and everyone that has heard it has been blown away by it. This amp takes pedals very well too! The great thing is that it doesn't need them. Pushing the amp with an OCD followed by a Big Muff Tone Wicker send you into all kinds of sonic realms. When I wish to do so I can emulate Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Ted Nugent, Gary Moore, Eric Clapton (of course), and many others with this little gem.

In my opinion, it is an exceptional amp and an exceptional value. With this amp and an overdrive pedal, I feel I could play any gig I wished without breaking my back. If you are on the Fence, my advice would be to just buy it. You will be happy you did.

One of the great things about dealing with Sweetwater music are the sales reps. I had not heard the amp before buying it, but my rep, Tyler Moore, knows my playing style and what I wanted to do with the amp. I asked him for comparisons to other amps and he was spot on with his recommendations. I couldn't be more pleased than I am with both Tyler and Sweetwater. ...and of course my new amp!

Sweet Spot

By Henry S.
Music Background: played guitar for 40 years

Nice amp on lots of levels. You get that real electric guitar sound. Without even using pedals you can adjust the amp and your guitar to get lots of different sounds. The weight and dimensions allow for relatively easy get up and go. You can move around with this thing. Powerful enough to play out if you're doing relatively small combo stuff but it could be miked. A good amp to learn on and a good amp for a professional. I like the look of the lacquered tweed.

Tone Heaven

By Sweetwater Customer from Seattle

I have it for 3 weeks... It came sweet sounding out of the box (it was a DEMO item from Sweetwatrer, but there was no difference between new and this one).
Re-tubed the power section with Blackplate RCAs and the pre-amp got some NOS tubes... Even Mullard rectifier is in the V7.
I have never played through sweeter sounding Fender amp. Worth every penny. Perfect balance of volume power, headroom, tone quality and looks. Crown jewel!

Beautiful Tone

By Jay from Summerville, SC
Music Background: Lifelong musician - semi pro for 15 years

I bought the tweed Princeton Reverb from SW about a month ago. So far, I'm very pleased with the amp and really love the tone. It sounds fantastic with my Tele. I rated 4.5 stars simply because I haven't had the amp very long so I can't speak to the amps longevity. It does, however, feel very solid in terms of construction and the components feel/appear to be well made. The handle feels much more secure than the one on my Blues Jr; - really liked that. All in all, a beautiful sounding amp with the gorgeous Fender reverb.

Something to note, as often happens with combo tube amps, there was some tube noise coming through when I turned the volume up over 5 or 6. This is no big deal, it's common, and its an easy fix. For about $8, you can get two tube damper rings from various suppliers. These rings are made of silicone and simply "hug" the power tubes and stop any vibration from the speaker. Problem solved. I had the same problem with a Marshall DSL40 and the damper rings did the trick there as well.

Also, a matter of personal preference, but I swapped out the stock Grove Tubes for JJ's. No matter your tube preference, I think most will agree with me that Grove Tubes fall short as compared to other brands. I'm not really sure why Fender loves them so much.

Absolutely Incredible

By Zebulun J. from Medina, OH
Music Background: playing for 25+ years

I cannot believe I waited this long to buy a tube amp. I cannot believe how glad/lucky I am that this is the amp that I chose. This amp is incredible. It is perfect for my style (classic/vintage rock) and makes my PRS custom 22 sing... As other reviews say, it is LOUD!!! but it plays great set at 4. I can use my Tumnus Deluxe and JHS Bonsai to push it to breakup or crank it up to 8 and naturally get that sweet crunch. The reverb/tremolo are great as well. I will never need another amp... it is plenty loud enough to play the small shops that I play it and I have been able to jam without having any issues either. My only complaint is that, while my 2 yr old and 6 month old sleep, I have to fight the urge to keep it at a reasonably low level. This struggle occurs, every night.

Great amp - a little "beefier' than standard 65 PRRI

By Sweetwater Customer from Pismo Beach, CA

This little amp is a monster! An EXTREMELY loud 15 watts! I really like the looks of the lacquered tweed, brown control panel and speaker cloth. The C. Rex speaker has some serious, um...., guts? Much beefier sounding than the standard 10" Jensen. I was able to A-B this with a friends regular 65 PRRI model with the 10" Jensen. His had more of the typical Fender "sparkle" or shimmer, which I kind of liked. The 12" C. Rex provides a more substantial, beefier, full sound. Not better or worse, just different. I may eventually try switching out the C. Rex for a 12" Jensen to get more of the Fender sparkle.

A minor "wish list" item on this amp: I wish the knobs were a more vintage cream color instead of black. The black knobs just don't look right on this. I would like to replace them with identical numbered knobs in a cream color, but they don't seem to exist. I found cream color "barrel" type knobs but they have no numbers on them.

I highly recommend this amp if you're looking for something along the lines of a PRRI, but with a cooler, more vintage look and a bigger sound than the standard model.

Sweetwater sales rep and overall service were excellent as always. Delivery was fast and amp was extremely well packaged. Arrived with zero damage and works perfectly.

Great Amp!

I'm a firm believer in that it takes a long time to truly understand new gear whether it be an amp, guitar, pre-amp, EQ, Comp etc... but I will say that after one month, this amp so far has exceeded my expectations. I heard a lot about these being good recording amps and wanted something clean to going along with my Marshall and Vox amps. I'm so impressed by the cleans! Extremely warm and full like no other amp I have, especially with playing open chords. A lot of other amps don't do that well. This by far is the best I've ever heard. I'm confident I'll feel the same a year from now and look forward to recording a lot with this!

Kinda love it

By Sweetwater Customer

I purchased this amp from Sweetwater a few weeks ago. After taking it through its paces at home and with the pit band I work with I have to say this is a pretty spectacular amp. Going with the 12" Cannabis Rex was definitely the way to go for me. It has a bit more bass frequency and a fuller sound. Great clean tone and starts to breakup around 5 on the volume knob. The reverb is a bit over the top if you dial it past 3. The tremolo is very subtle. It's great for me because I tend to use it instead of chorus but if you are looking for that big volume dropping warble you may be disappointed. Overall I have to give this amp extremely high praise. If you are looking for a smaller, clean amp for home, recording or small gigs check this one out. Big thanks to Joe James at Sweetwater for steering me in the right direction!

Really Pleased

By Brian R. from NW Ohio

Really pleased to have purchased this amp. Played it a bit around home and recently joined a country to hard rock band, therefore, tested it at rehearsals and one performance with my FX8 in front of it, all to excellent results. Sound guy even came up after the show and mentioned how great it sounded. That small stage was about the limit for it, though, without good monitoring. Looking forward to doing some tracking with this and experimenting with OD's/boost pedals. Love having a good 1x12 in it and the thing is simply beautiful looking.

Exactly the right combination!

By Charlie from So-Cal
Music Background: Pro gigging guitarist

When I came across this amp on the internet, I was like "thats it, just what I'm looking for", the perfect Princeton Reverb, the combination of the 12 inch speaker (and a good one) and Tweed aesthetics, giggable volume, easy to carry, very original and a must have. Whoever dreamed this one up deserves a raise and a promotion. So, tax refund time means it's mine, got the amp, replaced the Groove Tubes (pure crap) and the cheesy little am radio speaker cable (I use a hardwired to the speaker cable with switchcraft jack) and "Voila", the amp of my dreams. Thank you Sweetwater for the ultimate Fender LTD Edition, it sounds great, just like a Fender should!

Limited edition Princeton Reverb

By Jeff from IL
Music Background: Drums, guitar, sound

I wanted a bedroom amp/back up amp with good clean tone to play instead of my hand wired 65 George Alesandro Fender reissue Deluxe Reverb gigging amp. Was I in for a surprise. Upon purchase I realized i got a lot more than what I bargained for. Within 15 minutes of playing the amp with the factory Canibas Rex. Out it came and the Eminece Pete Anderson Hemp Dog went in. Bam!!!! There it was. The birth of a bad to the bone small amp on steroids. A 103 db speaker that turned a bedroom amp into a live band gigging monster! It gives up the goods at a reasonable volume and the tone blows me away! I played it for days looking for some kind of fault. Looking for any reason to fall short of my Deluxe Reverb. Can't find a thing. A perfect masterpiece. Didn't see it coming. I couldn't be more happy!!! It's every bit an equal to my Deluxe if not better in some ways. It goes out on my gigs. I was blind sided by this treasure. Being a hardcore old fashioned must be hand wired kinda guy. Just changed my whole perception. I struggled with the thought of purchasing this amp due to the PCB production. I'm not only sold on it. But a hard core fan and promoter of it! I highly recommend it. And I highly recommend the Eminence Pete Anderson speaker for it that Sweetwater sells. The speaker is a perfect mod for these small powered blackface amps. Back in the day Paul Rivera loaded these babies with EV 12L speakers. The Hemp Dog is sonically a much better replacement.

I'm a tone chaser and i've owned about every brand of amp at one time or another..The last 10 years i've been playing Blackstars and Marshalls..in the 80's it was my Marshall and a gunslinger..les paul....but as i've gotten older i wanted the sound of my childhood.I'm in my 50's now.. partially deaf from my years in rock and roll..I wanted the sound of my earlier recordings in the 70's...so much gear has passed by me in my life..amps, guitars, pedals..i came to realize that the tone i was searching for was with me the whole time..It was the sound i got when i plugged a telecaster into a princeton amp way back in the misty 70's..The 65 reissue sweetwater edition is a beautiful sounding machine..lush reverb and the vibrato channel is incredible and its got a 12 in speaker which is what a lot of players always wanted in a princeton..Is it as warm sounding as my 76 princeton..no..but pretty close..takes pedals well.. the 15 watts are loud enough for anybody..clean headroom all the up to 5 when it starts to breakup...the cannibus rex 12 is a good choice for this amp and when broken in should be a tone machine..A big thanks to my sales rep and friend Dennis Konicki for his expertise and opinions on gear im considering ...He and Sweetwater have never let me down..There are 4 or 5 special editions of this amp out there but if you want the real deal ..60s clean and 70s crunch, the sweetwater edition beats them all hands down..thanks to everyone at sweetwater and Dennis Konicki for this nostalgic ride to back where it all started for me.

The real deal!

By Chris

This is one killer little amp! I bought it to fill the Fender space in my amp collection, and boy does it do that! I agree with other reviewers it takes a little time for the Cannabis Rex speaker to break in, but once it does oh boy! It"s plenty loud and clean at 3, starts to break up at 5 and takes pedals extremely well. It has quickly become my favorite amp. Not much more to really say other than buy this Amp! And buy it today!!!!

Outstanding

By Joe A. from Normal, IL

What I would emphasize: at 15W you can think of this as a practice amp, but it's easily powerful enough to be used as a smaller gigging amp. It's not heavy, and it's beautifully designed. Everything about this amp breathes quality and the 12" speaker is louder and yields, I'd say, a rounder sound than the standard 10". You'll want to hook up your favorite distortion pedal -- in my case it's the OCD -- and, if you're like me, you'll want to put the amp on a stand. (I use the On-Stage RS7000, which works perfectly and costs only $40.) I spent months perusing and listening to different amps and talking to very experienced musicians -- I've owned an acoustic guitar for forty years but have only gotten serious about things in the past four years -- before I settled on this Princeton (prior to which I was using a small Vox, which was fine for what it was). Unless you're a working musician who needs big sound, I don't think you can do better than this (and I recognize that it's not exactly inexpensive). Guitars: PRS S2 Vela (Starla humbucker and PRS Type-D single coil), Ibanez JSM100VT John Scofield Signature semi-hollow (two humbuckers). Thanks as ever to Forrest Powell for his guidance in selecting this amp. This amp is a delight.

Fender '65 Princeton Reverb Tweed reissue - 15 Watt 1x12" C-Rex

By LR from Washington D.C.

Been using a Fender Twin and Fender BB, got turned onto the 1x12" C-Rex version by Sweetwater (DSnow)
Top notch sales experience - the sales staff knows the gear and will let you know about usage and comments to help with the decision - but all in all - gigged this beast - sound unheard, straight from the box, sound check tweaks and then straight to the audience - awesome cleans - didn't OD the amp this time - small crowd and mostly cleans were needed - if in search of that classic Fender clean and a beauty to look too - don't hesitate purchasing - the 12" speaker makes a big difference on the lows compared to the normal 10" Jensen - but again, you can't and won't go wrong buying this amp.

Tone that brings tears to your eyes

By Matty K. from Savannah GA
Music Background: 35 years and counting

Now that I've had the amp for a couple of months, I can say it's my favorite of all time at this point. the C Rex has really opened up, and that iconic warm Fender tone is coming right through. Terrific clean sound, just starts to break up around 4 on the volume. It takes pedals beautifully - I try to keep it simple, baseline is Xotic EP and MXR Carbon Copy. A BB Preamp for some overdrive and a Dunlop Mini-Wah are on hand as needed. I simply love, love, love this amp!

This amp is true Fender joy: clean and sweet, loud enough to keep up, and dirty with a pedal. And, it looks great in my little studio. Thanks, Sweetwater and Dave Brow!

Perfectly Clean

By Patrick from Raleigh, NC

I have had this amp for close to a year and I am still impressed with it.

I took the Eminence Speaker out and replaced it with the Celestion 90th Anniversary LTD 12" 35W 8ohm. The tone is now warmer and even better! Since the swap, I have noticed that the amp mixes with pedals better.

Great model. Future Gem.

By Royce C.
Music Background: Composer, Songwriter

I was looking for a great clean sounding amp that also can handle some pedals. I was looking for an amp that had "great fender cleans" so I started with a super champ xd but it got damaged. I bought some of the cheaper tube lunchbox amps but they were not great sounding. I was looking at blues juniors but instead went with Supersonic 22 due to versatility. Nowadays I do not play out a lot but I record demos and produce music for movies. On some days the SS22 noise floor is too much for me and I just cannot use it when I am doing something that requires good dynamics and clear tones. So after spending all this money I still want the quiet clean fender sound.
I came across some guitar boards and I was led to sweetwater to check out this particular 65RI with 12 inch speaker. I never would have considered a 10 inch amp (just my taste) but I considered modding a 65RI with a 12 but decided against. I was all aboard the BJ iv train due to the master volume and 12 inch speaker... but my inner voice said "You don't need a master volume, you have one on your guitar, and this amp will be higher quality."
I am so incredibly happy with the way this thing sounds I am going to sell my SS22. I was considering saving up for a new telecaster but my #1 (strat modded with tone zone in bridge) sounded like a new instrument through this thing! The only downside to the 12 inch is that you need to push it louder than the 10in for breakup. But the flipside of that is this amp is loud enough to gig. Any hall big enough to be worried about amp volume has sound system where they mic amps anyways so no fear on that!
I wanted this model for recording quiet clean parts up to the slight warm breakup. It is now the best sounding quiet tube amp I have. It is also on my "never sell" list. The reverb is quiet and works. The Vibrato is awesome it sounds really great even when left on subtle it adds character and tone. The amp has mojo. Instant sauce. No regrets. Thanks Norb for calling to make sure all was well.

opinion

By james f. from OH

Saturday night played this amp with an ES-335 dot neck reissue. Was curious how my band mates would respond. They have heard a black face super and black face pro, both originals and a reissue deluxe. Our bass player who is a highly experienced and educated musician said the tone that the amp provides is the best he has heard and my playing level increased...most likely because of this amp. The performance left me feeling more than satisfied with this amp. When you add the ease in carrying it and its great looks...it is well worth the cost.

How can such a small, light amp cut through so well, yet sound so mellow? I love how light it is! The clarity and tone is sweet. I have only played it sparingly at home. In a few days I will take it to a gig...eager to hear how it sounds in an ensemble in a bar atmosphere!

This Is It !!

By 5050ranch from Austin

This is it !! ... Lush and glassy real old school Fender sound. Push the volume knob up and it breaks up nice and smoothly till you get full bore grunt. I was surprised at how sensitive the control knobs are. Bump volume, treble or bass up or down one notch and you really get a noticeable and useable change in tone. Playing through this with a Corona Strat with Lindy Fralin Blues Specials pretty much is "the tone", volume on 7, treble on7, bass on 5, just sings. Back it down to 5 and you get a really present and harmonic chime sound with a hint of bite. Reverb is washy as usual but sounds great between 2 and 3, love the Vibrato but never really use it. Killer with pedals, this PRRI is everything a Blues Jr. wishes it was ;)

Like Butter!

By Kyle from Colorado
Music Background: Professional

This amp is exactly what I was looking for: crystal clear cleans, lush verb, low wattage (but plenty loud), one channel, simple interface, takes pedals extremely well, and looks downright beautiful. I actually purchased the Deluxe Reverb Limited Edition first, which is a great amp as well. Unfortunately it was defective, so I sent it back and got this gem instead (thanks Sweewater & Kent Sallaz for the great service as always). Now that I've had both, I greatly prefer the Princeton. The DRRI was just a tad too bright for my taste, and I had to turn the treble way down to get the sound I was looking for. But with the Cannabis Rex 12" in this Princeton, it cuts out some of the "tinny" highs while still sounding full and rich. Also the lacquered tweed finish has an amazing tactile feel to it which I think will be extremely durable for gigging. Literally could not be happier with this purchase. And did I mention that it's freaking gorgeous?!

Music Background: Playing for 52 years.

I played this amp today and it was great! Nice clean tones. Perfect balance across the tone spectrum. Classic Fender. Dirties up a bit around 6. Not too much, but a little. Just right for me. I'm a low tech guy and really appreciate the easiness of dialing in a sound. I dont use pedals and with this amp i dont need any. Volume, bass, treble. One channel. Reverb goes off the charts past 3. The tremelo sounds fantastic. The 12" speaker is the perfect compliment. If there was ever a perfect amp this is it. Its a bit expensive for its size, but worth every cent.

I recently purchased this amp and love it. I have had Princeton reverb amps in the past but they were loaded with 10" speakers. I didn't like the sound and had always wished the amp had a 12" speaker. When I saw this model, Idecided to give it a try. Best move ever. It is now my favorite. I use a Gibson ES 335 and use input #2. Great sound and excellent customer service. Sweetwater, you rock!

The holy grail

By RJ from Central NC
Music Background: Hobbyist

I was in the market for a new amp and had narrowed it down to the 65 Reverb Reissue or the 68 Custom Reverb. Perusing the website, I saw that Sweetwater had the 65 Reverb Reissue FSR in stock with the 12" Cannabis Rex Speaker. Needless to say I'm more than pleased with my decision. The amp looks beautiful and sounds even better. There are such awesome cleans, with break up at/after 5-6 on the volume dial. It does get quite loud for household/bedroom playing. Reverb sounds great, and the Tremolo is one of the best I've used. Takes pedals well. Overall, this amp is better than I could've imagined, and my expectations were high after reading numerous reviews.

It's been a while since I've owned a high quality amp, ecstatic to have this Fender Princeton! The tone is bright and clean, reverb is sweet and shimmery, and it just looks cool. I haven't been able to get it above 3 on the volume dial as I don't wish to disturb the neighbors too much, pretty sure it's got all the volume I'll ever need. Many thanks to Phil Schwann for putting the sale together, always a pleasure! :)

NOT a Clean Amp!

By Kelly from Seattle
Music Background: 40 plus years playing

I have been actively playing for more than 40 years. I have had Princeton Reverb amps in the past. I like them a lot. I saw the cosmetics of this one, along with the Cannibus Rex speaker and thought " Hmm... Interesting" I read several reviews stating they were a very Clean amp, and I thought " Wow, they must have either changed the circuitry or the new 12" speaker has totally given a new sound/breakup level to this amp. I ordered one, received it, plugged in my Stock 2010 American Standard Strat and by the time I was at "7" on the volume knob it was starting to break up. Do I love this amp? YES! Is it a CLEAN AMP? NO! So if your criteria is, you want an amp you can crank and have little to no break up, this is NOT the amp you want. Also, not an extremely loud amp, my Blues Junior seems to have a higher db output ( And a CLEANER output ) than the Princeton. Will I keep it? Yes. It looks super cool, and has a good tone, certainly not Holy Grail'ish as some have made it sound. Why 5 stars? Because they will bury this review if I give it less. Just trying to be real, and helpful.

This amp is absolutely awesome. Small enough for the bedroom, yet big enough for the local bar gig, church, recording studio.... Wherever you need great reliable tone. Perfect

By DDP from Edgewood, WA
Music Background: A little bit of everything.

Really couldn't ask for more from a small Fender amp. The 12" speaker keeps the low end big and round at louder volumes yet still has that nice chime in top that Princetons are famous for. The reverb is darker and longer then any of my large fender amps but nothing I'm interesting in switching out to change. It's an amazing day sounding amp using my teles and strats loaded with vintage noiseless pu.
I picked it up for some old school country gigs in venues seating 150-500 and have yet to turn it up beyond 4. Stays clean at 4 and any slight overdrive I need occasionally isn't a probably with a pedal. The size and the weight are just icing on the cake when packing the car and loading into the venues. These days amps are just personal monitors on stage for my gigs, PAs are doing all the heavy work, and 15 watts with a "12 gets plenty of clean stage volume to get over heavy handed drummers.

The other reviews recommending this amp are spot on. It's absolutely stunning with a sound that matches its visual beauty. I use a Strat and Les Paul and appreciate how the amp exploits the nuisances between the two. This has to be one of my favorite amps after 30+ years of playing guitars. Lastly, the service from Sweetwater is impeccable. Thank you for everything over the years!

It’s THE ONE

By Max

I have been trying to decide between the 65 Reissue and the 68 Custom Princeton models. Once I saw this on sweetwater’s site though, it looked like the perfect compromise. This thing is AWESOME! Everything I wanted it to be and more. The volume level is PERFECT for what I do (home fun, church band) The C-Rex speaker WILL NOT allow this amp to make a harsh sound and the headroom seems much higher than the standard 65 and 68 which is good because I use it clean and get all my dirt petalsI’m just so happy that I’ve found the only amp I will ever NEED.

Tweed Princeton with12" Cannabis Rex

By Rick N. from Western North Carolina

This is the one! Over 50 years on Fender tube amps plus a few from Mesa and Soldano, this thing is the best! Plenty loud or put a mic on it. The best players in your audience WILL notice and complement your tone. That's what happens when I play out! Plus... I was looking for an easier to carry amp due to the aforementioned advancing age. At 34 lbs I will be more willing to grab it and go. That 10 lb saving compared to my Blues Deluxe is very noticeable and appreciated! Although I am super impressed with the Cannabis Rex speaker I am concerned about K-9 drug dogs sniffing around my new favorite amp!

I received this amp yesterday, plugged in my Collings 360 (p90s) and fired it up. All I can say is WOW! This amp is so clean and has great bass response. It takes pedals extremely well too.

The 12" Cannabis Rex speaker is a significant upgrade over the stock 10" Jensen speakers. It is so loud!

Buy it. You won't regret it.

Fender ' 65 Princeton Reverb 15 -watt 1"x12" Tweed Lacquered Combo Amp

By David B. from VA
Music Background: A Drummer who is guitar crazy

Blown Away, blig time !!! This amp is incredible in every way possible !!! I agree with ALL of the wonderful comments in the other reviews. The 12 inch RC speaker has killer tone in this amp. It is Louder,Cleaner, and has much more bottom end than the 10 inch version. Breaks up some at 5 and more at 6 plus on the volume; but not with heavy fuzz or major distortion ,just tremendous real tube amp break up. The BEST CLEAN I have ever heard on any Fender amp ,except for the Twin, but 2 different animals. The Tweed cover and grille are just like the Bassmans from the 60s.and are truly beautiful. This amp is Soooo quiet for a tube amp, virtually no hiss. Reverb and Tremolo is fantastic. I really do not believe I will never need another amp for home use, maybe even for playing out. This projects the sounds of the 60s and 70s ,that is stuck in my head ; with wine glass crystal cleans and gets fairly loud past 6 on the volume. Reverb is VERY strong much past 2 or 3. Great for recording and gigging in small venues or mike for more volume on stage.Much Thanks to Darius Beatz my sales engineer for keeping me posted and shipping the amp promptly. Sweetwater is the best in the business ,by far.

Mighty Beauty

By Sweetwater Customer from Dallas, Texas
Music Background: Playing guitar and keyboards for over 50 years.

I am so glad I purchased the Princeton, it sounds better than my vintage Fender Twin and the old Deluxe I used to have. The tweed just adds to this mighty beauty. The lows are nice and meaty, highs sparkling clear as others have said. Any of my pedals sound good with it and I love the weight, only 34lbs. Fender supplies a nice cover with logo. All my strats were made to play through this sweetheart, Les Paul sounds great with it also. It was on order for a couple weeks but Nate Burkhardt, a great sales engineer, got it to me within two days once they had it in stock. Buy one, you will not be disappointed.

Awesome amp

By Andy

I was hesitant to order this amp sight unseen/sound unheard, especially with it backordered but I'm glad I did. The clean tone this amp delivers is exactly what I was looking for.

The build quality seems good. No rattles in the cabinet so far and the stock tubes are quiet.

I had a 68 custom deluxe reverb that I liked but really couldn't find the super smooth clean tone that I immediately found with this amp. Side by side, the CDR had more of a compressed sound and much more background noise, which was noticable at quiet volumes. This Princeton is silent. Beautiful tones everywhere on the volume dial. It doesn't get as loud as the CDR did, and it sounds a little smaller in a way, but it has about the same clean headroom.

Reverb is really splashy and in my opinion sounds great until about 3 on the dial, but is over the top above 4. Tremolo sounds great and is useable across the whole dial and is very quiet with no ticking. I also like that you can use the tremolo without the footswitch, unlike the deluxes.

It's a beautiful looking and sounding amp. Definitely a keeper.

I really enjoy the sounds of the old blues guys. Just plug right into the amp and go. Go to 5 and break it up and get some of that Hendrixesque mojo. Clean it up and switch over to T-Bone Walker. I have more fun with this little amp than any of my other amps. I never had an amp that played this clean. My 212 Fender has some nice clean sound but this PR Tweed is light years ahead of the big one. Tried my chipped Tube Screamer through it and WOOOWW! My Chinese Tele absolutely sings through this amp.I am SOOO pleased I pulled the trigger on this amp. Bart Amburn always has good advice and is totally accommodating. He touches base with me every now and then to see if I have any needs and or wants. Totally easy communication with Bart. I love my amp - it is glass/spatial - provides deep lower end to uphold the very scooped mids. It does not really "break up" in any manageable way (at least at my volumes). But i have tube screamer, etc etc... so... Anyway, not sure I relate to the other reviews, here - many seem to be written by employers or fender reps ;) ... but as a regular person playing guitar (over 25 years), I do like this amp, appreciate the very clean jazzy cleans w/ nice verb, which i never push beyond "3". As a bass player first, I appreciate the thickness and umpf of the lows.

Feeder 65 Princeton reverb reissue tweed

By Thomas G. from Colton, CA
Music Background: Home studio, collaborations, I just love playing

I was waiting for this amp which I believe is still not available when I received a call from Sweetwater and was told that they had a new in box demo model available with full warranty, they also offered me $ off on this amp, I took it. I really can't say enough about this amp. I wanted a living room amp that I could play at low volume of I need it. This amp sounds wonderful and is a beauty to look at. It is also very pedal friendly. I am running a Menatone red snapper and blue collar though it, and it creates that beautiful bluesy sound we all love. Strats and teles are awesome of course, but my PRS is great as well. This is actually a loud little amp, but sounds great at low volume as well, it starts breaking up at about 5 and really grinds at 7 and 8. My only negative comment is that the reverb really washes out at anything over 3. I'm not a surf guy, I'm not really into that much reverb. Sweetwater service was good but I'm curious, when I used to buy items I always received a phone call asking me if I received my order and if I was satisfied. My last two orders this did not happen. I'm not sure if this is a change in policy, but if it is I would like to suggest that you bring it back, it was a great personal touch. Great amp! Great with pedals, great value!

Princeton

By Jim B. from Illinois
Music Background: I've been the weekend warrior, session player, semi-pro and pro off and on for 40 years.

I know sound is subjective. That being said, I also own a Twin, Hotrod Deluxe, Deluxe Reverb, Mesa Mark III, and a Mesa 5:50 Plus. The Princeton is my favorite sounding amp.

It sounds clean and warm without getting muddy. It has enough power to get me through all our practice sessions. I haven't tried it out on a live gig. I play mostly country and do not use extreme volume or lots of effects, so I'm thinking it may work for some of the smaller gigs I do. So far, the only effect I have used on this is a delay for a little slapback. That seems to work OK but I'm not sure how well it takes effects.

I think it sounds best with my Les Paul but, again, sound is subjective. I have used a Les Paul, Strat and Tele through it and they all sound good. I just like the sound of the humbucker a little better.

I like the looks, the weight, the size and it is loud for a 15 watt amp. I can't think of any cons. If you are looking for a small clean sounding amp: I would suggest you take a serious look at this one.

Amazing Amp

By Christian from Connecticut
Music Background: Hobbiest

In summary, I am simply blown away with this amp. I've had a few previous Fender amps like BJ3, Super Sonic 22, and my current primary amp is a Mesa Boogie Express 5:25+. Upon first plugging in my Fender Elite Strat directly into Input 1, turning up guitar volume to full, setting all knobs on the amp to 5 and then powering it up! There I sat in front of the amp waiting patiently for the familiar hum of a warmed up tube amp while I began thinking about what riffs will be my first. About a minutes goes by and I started to become discouraged that something was wrong. When I moved to investigate it came to full life as my hand hit the strings on the neck! wow it was loud. Quieting the strings, I came to realize this amp is DEAD SILENT. This was the moment when I knew this amp was going to be epic.... and I haven't even played it yet!

I began playing, running through various settings and guitar bridge configs, inserted the pedal board in line and tried my Les Paul as well. a few hours later I walked away extremely satisfied and in awe. My Mesa was twice the price ( I still enjoy it as it's very different) but this is looking to be my new default amp.

Two more weeks have gone by and I can now say that without any doubt this amp is the cleanest, quietest, most articulate and dynamic amp I have ever experienced. Not only does it take pedals well, it brings new life to pedals. This amp is making me see where I could work on my finesse, pick attack and clarity. I am now finding I play more relaxed and lighter through this amp.

I highly recommend this amp in this specific special edition configuration... Really excited to see how this amp sounds after the Rex breaks in and I learn the ins and outs fully.

Having bought all my gear from Ryan at Sweetwater for the past 5 years and this is one more fantastic product and easy transaction that exceeds expectations. Thanks!

Looks and sounds AMAZING

By Matt from Oregon
Music Background: 30 years of guitar, 25 years in the studio

Not usually quick to give out 5 stars, but this gem easily deserves it. The tweed look is ridiculously classy and the sound is everything you've ever loved about Fender amps. This looks, feels, and sounds like a more expensive amp.

Pairing this with my Eric Clapton stratocaster leads to an incredible world of tonal possibilities that are so pure and sweet and simple, and yet so elusive when you don't have the right gear. It sounds great with all my guitars, but a strat is definitely it's soulmate.

With the volume set to 3-4, it sings with crystal clear beauty and at reasonable volume levels. Dial it up a touch more and dig in and you'll start to get that edge-of-breakup sound. By the time you are at 7 on the dial its getting quite loud and the breakup is fantastic. Working from memory only, it does give me breakup at much lower volumes than a Deluxe.

As is usual with Fender, I have know idea why the reverb knob bothers to go to 10... by the time you reach 3 you are drowning in it. I never understood why they didn't give the knob more usable range, but the reverb is stellar and best used with a light touch. The vibrato is excellent - a classic sound.

Put a Wampler Black '65 pedal in front of the amp and you'll get some additional EQ flexibility (especially with the mids) and you can set the gain to help get the sound of a cranked amp, but a lower volumes. it's a perfect pairing whether you use it as a boost, tone shaper, or overdrive channel.

The 12" speaker fills out the low end nicely, and to my ears and memory gives the high end a slightly smoother sound than I'm used to from other princeton amps.

All in all, this is an incredible amp. It pairs nicely with pedals, is a nice size and weight, and is just oozing with both visual and sonic character.

LOVE THIS AMP!

By Marc from Connecticut
Music Background: Playing at home for 40 years

Not sure what I could add to the years of rave review's this amp design has drawn over the years except to say now that I finally own one I now know what I've been missing in my sound and playing for decades. I'm 53 and since I started playing as a teen I was into loud and dirty and whenever I ventured into cleaner playing and cleaner sounds I was never happy and soon went back to cranking it up. No longer it's like this amp is teaching me how to play all over again. I've never been one to play with pedals always looked to the guitar, amp and playing for tone, overdrive, etc. That said with this amp as a base tone I will probably start experimenting with pedals for gain, overdrive, etc. rather than going back to cranking up my Marshall. Right now I'm more than content to just plug any of my guitars into her and play it straight. It sounds great with my 3 Les Paul's one with hand wound P90s, one fitted with Dimarzio Virtual PAFs, one with Seymour Duncan Seth Lovers and my Epiphone Joe Bonamassa Firebird 1.

Limited Edition Lacquered Tweed 65 Princeton Reverb RI

By joe m. from gilmer, tx
Music Background: serious home musician

I had originally ordered this amp as a gift, but ashamed to say it, I've got to keep this amp. cosmetics are outstanding- the material, fit and finish, and workmanship is superb. but the tone is where it gets serious. it's been a long time since I played a PR and my memories of the 10" speaker are that it was very good overall, but a little short on the bottom end. now I don't know if it's the fact this Limited Edition is equipped with a 12" driver, or it's the SPECIFIC 12". I have read dozens of reviews of this Eminence Cannabis Rex and the response have been virtually unanimous in rating it at the very top of 12's out there. I only know that this speaker is a perfect match to this amp. great bottom end-nice and tight, full mid's, and yes "singing" is the right adjective for the highs. lush reverb and vibrato in conjunction with the 2 band eq gives a tonal pallet choices to suit any playing style. I played through a standard strat SSS, and a firebird "clone" equipped with P90's and just amazed at the nuance of tones. those 6V6 output tubes are so touch sensitive it's pretty hard to believe. now, I've got to come up with another gift idea- because this little amp is staying right where it is. as always Josh was great to deal with- always helpful and professional- it's a BIG part of me coming back to Sweetwater. you owe it to yourself to spend a little time seeing what this amp can do for your sound- you will not be disappointed .

Tone Monster!

By Larry from Kalamazoo Mi
Music Background: Aspiring Musician / Basement Studio Dweller

I have wanted a fender tube amp for over 15 years. This is the perfect amp for my new home studio. The tone is exactly what I wanted. Crystal clear sparkling sound that's smooth as butter. The tremolo has a great vintage vib the harkens to 60's surf sounds. Classic spring reverb. It's no wonder this amp is so heavenly recorded. Quiet enough for clean low volume. I can always run a pedal in front for lower volume overdrive. Crank it up and wowsa! The tube overdrive sounds terrific. Doesn't seem to breakup till higher volumes. Love the 12 inch speaker. Great lows and glowing highs. I was torn between this and a 68 deluxe reverb for only $ more. I now know the deluxe reverb would have been too loud for my studio. This is perfect and still loud enough for a smaller gig. Plus I can always mic it to a PA if needed. The tweed is just beautiful. My marshall avt20 will now collect dust. This is my # 1 now!
Sweetwater service was the best. It was out of stock when I ordered but my sales engineer kept me posted and shipped it out right away when they received it. Plus Sweetwater is the only place to find this exclusive amp. They double boxed it before shipping. Happy jammer here! Thank you Sweetwater Music!

A Sweet Amp

By Tony from Hawaii

Brings to life the character of your guitar. Smooth & clean when low; classic fender breakup/overdrive when pushed. It's responsive and dynamic. The Cannabis Rex sounds very well balanced. It's mellow when quiet, but can move some air when turned up!

The truth Prince

By HOWEE from Los angeles
Music Background: Semi pro

I usually Play Boutique hand-wired tube amps similar to many Fender designs and wasn't too sure about purchasing this one it looks great and the sound is superb true vintage fender warm tube tone Deepreverb smooth tremolo I think the 12 inch speaker and some fullness and bottom into the sound that's great addition as this amp usually comes with a 10 inch I've owned it for about 2 months now and every time I play it it's on the spot and gives me just what I'm looking for it's portable 15 watts is a decent-size power for small venues and I am extremely happy with this purchase I would put it up against and costing two to three times the money and it would hold its own for sure just buy it what else can I say

Great Fender Sweetwater-exclusive

By James from Minneapolis, MN

I am always drawn to smaller Fender amps like this one and the Deluxe Reverb. They have the sound I've been hearing in my head for 50+ years. I was drawn to this one by it's unique appearance, and while the pictures were good, this amp is downright beautiful to look at. But it isn't about looks. The unique 12" speaker seems like a really good match for this amp. You can't get a bad or harsh sound out of it. I use it for home / studio and it's about perfect for my purposes. It is really quiet at idle, with no hum or hiss at all. The reverb and tremolo ('vibrato') are great tube driven, versatile effects. Usually the first thing I do is replace tubes from my stock of NOS RCA and GE tubes, but this amp sounds good as it is and I'm going to leave it alone for now. I've had it about a month, but feel the speaker still needs some breaking in, but after about 20 hours of use, it sounds great. I have been a little hesitant buying a tube amp without seeing it or hearing it in person first. It seems that there are a lot of things that can go wrong shipping a tube amp around, but this amp was carefully double boxed, which I really appreciated, and it arrived in perfect condition. No problems, no issues, just great Fender sound.

Perfect

By daniel from Texas

Have all sorts of Fender amps - (been playing for over 40 years). This little Princeton beats most of them.
Speaker not broken in yet and used it at a gig - band members and I noticed the difference.
Sweetwater reps were awesome - as professional as one can get - will buy here again.

Turn it up!

By JayF from Lancaster, PA

Looks great, sounds great.
Upgrade all the tubes to Tungsol, turn it up and enjoy the smooth overdriven tone this amp produces.
Reverb and Tremolo are some of the finest I've ever heard.
I leave volume cranked and use volume control on my Strat to get my desired tone.
Amp is extremely loud for only being 15 watts.
Get one while you can. Fantastic tone!
Thanks to my sales engineer, Chris Neyman for getting the amp to me in less than 48 hrs.
Great service from Chris and the entire team at Sweetwater.
