Charvel Pro-Mod DK24 HH 2PT Electric Guitar - Matte Blue Frost Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Alder Body, Caramelized Maple Neck, Caramelized Maple Fingerboard, 2 Humbucking Pickups, and Gotoh Tremolo - Matte Blue Frost

Two guitar icons come together in the Charvel Pro-Mod DK24. Its alder Jackson Dinky body is light in the hands and contoured against the body, while a graphite-reinforced Charvel Speed Neck remains rock solid as it ages. Charvel's familiar 12"–16" compound-radius fingerboard flattens out nicely in the upper registers, giving technical players the speed and expression they need for bends, runs, and vibrato.

THE BEST GUITAR!

By Jake from MA on December 21, 2022 Music Background: Guitarist for 21 years

I've owned over 50 guitars and this is by far the best. The feel of the neck and the body is perfect for me. The neck is so sturdy that I haven't had to adjust anything over the 2 years I've had it which is incredible considering I live in the north east. Also, this is the first guitar I haven't needed or wanted to replace the electronics, pickups or hardware. It's Perfect!

WOW! This guitar is hot FIRE!!

By Eric Hambright from Cary, NC on July 6, 2022

I play metal, prog, and surf rock. I ended up recording some of our latest cd using the new charvel and completely blown away. First guitar in a long time I haven't had to mod anything. Steal floating trem block, insane pickups, and the neck is the best I have ever played. The single coil tones blew me away. Truly amazing. The full shred are perfect for down tuned metal (drop c#) and the tuning stability after adding some nut lube on a string change, is incredible solid! 5 stars are not enough for this guitar. Thank you Aric Brenner! The customer service is the main reason I keep coming to you guys and plan on ordering the majority of my gear from Sweetwater! My first charvel and I'm blown away by the setup the fit and finish everything. 0 flaws at all and I own several guitars.

Can't be topped.

On paper, and in practice, you just can't improve upon this guitar. It doesn't sound like a Strat, but it can get glassy like one. It doesn't sound like a Tele, but it can twang!
And of course the humbuckers can roar!

The only real drawback to this guitar is that it won't make you feel like hendrix or cropper while you play it, but if you are the kind of person who wants smooth action, a versatile voice, and no compromises in hardware or materials, this is it!

I'm not a shredder, but I love the feel of Charvel guitars. This guitar can do anything.

I LOVE this guitar!

By Matt c from Kentucky on September 11, 2021 Music Background: Amateur musician

First, it's gorgeous. I can't stop looking at it. The compound radius neck is perfect for me. I don't really shred but the neck flattens out in the higher registers to make that kind of thing easy. The satin finish on the neck is smooth and is fast and comfortable. The body carve is ultra comfy, it's carved in just the right places to make it very comfortable to play. The hardware is high quality, I love the locking tuners, and the pickups have so much warmth and definition. You have many tone options between the switch that places them in or out of series, and the ability to combine one coil from one pickup with another coil from the second pickup is very handy. You can go from warm, bassy and full bodied, almost p90 like sound from the neck, to screaming highs and clear clean tones from the bridge.
My one complaint, and this is just a personal problem it has nothing at all to do with the guitar, is the floating bridge. I rarely play with a trem so not being about to drop tune one string without retuning the whole guitar has been a pain. I cut out a wood block and blocked the floating trem off to make the bridge a hard tail and it's worked perfectly. The floating bridge is great for trem work, it's responsive and stays perfectly in tune, I just don't play that style of music.
In summary, this is by far my favorite guitar now. If you have never purchased from Sweetwater, you're going to be pleasantly surprised by their customer service. They're so helpful and friendly and I'll never buy gear anywhere else ever again. Huge shout out to my gear advisor from Sweetwater, Gage Massey. This guy knows his stuff and is one of the most helpful customer service representatives I have ever dealt with.

Great guitar!

Guitar plays and sounds great! Absolutely love the neck on this thing, really fast for shredding around.

Amazing guitar!

By Jacob from Denver, CO on March 15, 2021 Music Background: 17 years guitar experience, self taught, hobbyist.

I didn't buy this from Sweetwater (sorry guys, I do love your store though and try to buy from you guys whenever I buy something brand new). I got this from a seller on Reverb who bought this brand new and barely played it and decided to sell it. I got it practically brand new still in box with all accessories. This guitar is incredible! If you play Metal, Rock, Jazz, it doesn't matter because this guitar handles it all beautifully!

I absolutely love everything about the guitar (mine is Matte Blue Frost), it looks and feels so great that I always end up picking it up every time I look at it. It just plays so effortlessly with the super comfortable neck and jumbo frets. I polished my frets, cleaned up the tiny bit of fret sprout, changed the string trees to graphtech lubricated white string trees, and adjusted the bridge, saddles and truss rod to my preference and it is now a perfect weapon. The 5 way pickup switch along with the series/parallel switch allows 10 different tones! There's nothing more versatile then this guitar. If you're looking for a great guitar in the $1,000 price range then get this guitar! You won't regret it, just set it up to your preferred action and string height and it will play flawlessly.

Great Guitar

By Jeff from New Jersey on September 13, 2020 Music Background: Play guitar at home

I was reluctant to order this guitar without trying one first but I felt the need to try something different. I honestly was blown away by the craftsmanship of this guitar and the playability right out of the box. The pickups are so clear sounding and almost have like an acoustic like character to them when paired with this guitar. There is a huge amount of tonal versatility with this guitar. I'm honestly about to sell a bunch of my other guitars because this guitar does everything!

Smells great

By Evan from Dayton, Ohio on January 17, 2020

This guitar is so much more than I expected! The body carves on it make it so comfortable, and the neck is so fast! The trem is so responsive and the pickup system gives you such a variety of tones. The roasted maple neck is smooth and it smells SO GOOD. Love this guitar and the color.

This one surprised me

By Mike Wiles from Alabama on February 22, 2024 Music Background: 40 yrs playing in church bands, jams, conferences, cookouts, etc.

Got this last year. Saw it in a local shop. At the time, I had a Suhr Modern Satin. I was intrigued that the body shape and trem were the same. The main differences between the two was the Suhr had HSH and I wanted HH. And, yes the Suhr had polished SS frets vs the Charvel. But at 3X the price, I just didn't see the value. Probably the biggest thing that put the Charvel on my permanent 'Keep' list is the sound. For jazz, rock, and blues, this thing covers it. The toggle switch lets you get great single coil sounds from the neck as well as strat in-between tones in positions 2 and 4.
I'm rather picky about setup and do all my own work. I check everything.
I have nothing negative to say about this guitar. The nut is cut great. It stays in tune. The fretwork is good. It intonates well. This is the only Charvel I have owned or played. I will sell my strat before I let this go. It will do all the strat stuff I need. Plus, it will cover HB work too. Just a great, versatile guitar. After playing it for a few months, I sold the Suhr. I still have several nice guitars that get played a lot. This one gets played more than most.

Beautiful and Versatile Guitar

By Lawrence Breiden from Philadelphia, PA on October 17, 2023

If there ever was a worldwide conference of the best guitar designers, luthiers and players and they were to deicide on a guitar that was spec'd out totally for almost all players then this would be the end results. It is a unique instrument that is more than the sum of it's parts. From the headstock down this thing is loaded and meant to be PLAYED!

The neck is probably one of the most comfortable necks that I've ever laid my hand on. The tactile feel of the roasted maple makes me think of wearing silk gloves. The compound radius lets me play all day long with no fatigue. Locking tuners and a Graph Tech nut ensure tuning stability. Fretwork on mine was impeccable. Luminlay side dot markers because why not. And I can only hope that more guitar manufacturers will adopt the heel mounted spoke wheel truss rod adjuster in the future. Oh, yeah...and the unique input jack placement on the back, while maybe not for everyone, suits me just fine.

Now, enough on the specs. If you're considering this guitar (which you probably already are if you're reading this review) you probably have done the deep dive research and watched all the videos. So how does it sound? (as a point of reference my genres of choice are modern metal, 80's metal, and modern blues) Well, it's got a versatile palette of tones. Everything from warm blues to rock to modern metal is on tap. Charvel claims with a five way PU selector combined with a mini toggle switch you can get ten different tones. And here is where I knock off a half star, because I find that only seven of those tones are usable. I don't know if it's faulty wiring on mine but three of the positions with the mini toggle engaged just sound like weaker tones of the tones when unengaged. Still, even with seven tones this thing still sings beautifully. So take this beauty out for a ride. If you do you'll probably be grinning from ear to ear.

I want to give a shout out to my Sales Engineer Tomir Denton. He's very knowledgeable with all things gear related and great to work with.

Fantastic all-around rock machine

By Sweetwater Customer on March 11, 2022 Music Background: Long time hobby player

This guitar plays well above its price point. The neck is supremely comfortable to play. In 3 months it has joined my music man majesty as dual #1 guitars, it's that good. I did replace the plastic knobs with knurled metal ones, but that's just a personal preference.

Small quibble: where my hand rubs on the body when I palm mute has glossed the satin finish. Not a deal breaker but I can't give a full five stars for that happening in only 2 months.

Shoutout to Erik Bothwell for getting me a replacement tremolo arm sent out to me even though I did not purchase the guitar at Swwetwater. Next one certainly will be purchased through them!

Sonic versatility

By Sean from CO on April 14, 2021

I've had the guitar almost a year. This is my first satin finish guitar and first roasted unfinished maple neck guitar. It takes a bit of getting used to, the finish can be easily scratched if you are get carried away and sloppy with your picking or if you drop something on it - I don't mind too much and knew this before I bought it. The unfinished neck is a different feel if you are not used to it. The actual neck profile, fretwork and finishing are fantastic. The setup was perfect out of the box, I have only had to adjust the intonation once since I've had it. The bridge is actually really good, stays in tune and the vibrato is smooth.
The sound: Single coil clean tones are my home but I was looking for "a humbucker guitar" that could provide a lot of versatilty including a range of modern clean tones. This definitely does the job, the bridge pickup can rip your face off but with the tone knob dialed back a bit has a lively, rich clean sound. The neck pickup is full, clear, and balanced.
After a winter in Colorado I did have to file the fret ends down - I guess not even roasted maple can stop that.

Roasted Maple?

By KS on February 22, 2020

Purchased this guitar from Sweetwater in November. Guitar has been stored and played in a humidity controlled environment, but less then 2 months later the "roasted maple" neck shrunk so bad that every single fret would cut you when sliding up and down the neck. This isn't a one off case either, my local store has a similar model in stock and the neck on it has done the exact same thing. Even without the neck issue, the overall quality of the Charvel brand has been dropping off recently as I have had a different model that had serious fret level issues earlier this year.

Charvel support is less then helpful, but Sweetwater is fantastic! They have always taken care of me. While I won't be purchasing any Charvel products in the future, I will be keeping my business with Sweetwater, it's hard to find any company that steps up like they do for their customers, thank you Sweetwater!!!
