As a fan of Yamaha synths like the DX7 and DX100 (my first synth), I was excited to see what Korg could add to the DX7 synth architecture. I was not disappointed: it sounds amazing and goes beyond the idea of extending FM synthesis to embrace a truly "virtual modular" architecture that allows for unlimited signal routing possibilities between FM operators that can not only use a wide range of waveforms, but also be configured as ring modulators or other non-FM signal generators/modulators. What this adds up to is an amazingly powerful and flexible sound design tool. The patch randomization feature is also thoughtfully designed and a great way to quickly discover new sounds.

My only gripe is it's ability to import vintage DX7 patches is hindered by only allowing import of one bank (32 patches) at a time. This is a hindrance to this key feature, so I hope Korg fixes it in a future firmware update.

I wanted to add a digital synth to my analogue collection that would be easy to navigate. My consideration was between the Wavestate and Opsix. Both sounded quite good. I decided to go with Opsix because there was less menu diving. After reading the quick start guide, I was up and running immediately. The effects on the Opsix are the best I ever heard. There are plenty of them and it is very easy to make adjustments. Each factory preset allows you to change the algorithm and there are 40 per preset. You can get lost in them for hours!
