it's nice if you have another synth

By Andrew H. from PORT ORCHARD, WA
Music Background: producer

For me this thing really comes in handy when I need a weird noise. Personally this was my first synth and in my opinion that was a mistake because once I upgraded to a Korg Minilogue XD it became much more useable in music production. I personally much prefer being able to press keys down than to have the keys of the MicroFreak you might differ.

Hugely versatile and unique

By Aubrey
Music Background: recording engineer, solo musician, sonic adventurer

I'll admit, I was a little hesitant to purchase a small synth with digital oscillators at a time when analog is in fashion, but the Microfreak transcends its architecture.

The filter, an analog one, is warm and buttery - lending some humanity and warmth to the basic oscillators. And the range of oscillators is truly staggering. Chords, phonemes, FM, all the classic waveshapes, samples, physical modeling, noise, and several more.

The Microfreak is deep.

The cycling envelope is like nothing I've used before. When coupled with the modulation matrix, this thing can get really out-there. Or really organic. Modulate almost any parameter with any other parameter, and then twist them into insanity. Words really don't do justice to how much possibility is contained in this thing

The keyboard is strange, and I'm not entirely sold on it - but there's nothing quite like it out there - and you can use an external controller if you like. I sometimes do, but the flat capacitive keyboard suits such a delightfully strange machine, and takes it places that traditional keys can't go.

And did I mention it has a vocoder? Cuz it has a vocoder.

For the money, it's one of the most versatile and unique little synths out there, and truly transcends its price class. It can be as warm and musical or as alien and harsh as you want it to be.

Midi implementation is flawless, and there's an excellent combinatior patch out there for Reason users that makes automation in Reason an absolute joy.

It also plays well with my Korg Volca Beats for DAWless jams.

I'm really glad I picked this thing up on a whim.

Must be Grounded or its

By James A. from BROWNSVILLE, TX

I am a novice in the synth world and when I went to purchase this product it was amazing and was so much fun to play with and make music with and sound scapes. However, I did run into an issue however. The issue stems from a flaw in the build, and that being that the synth must be power with a proper ground from the wall or usb. If the outlet or usb device is not grounded properly the Synth will freakout when ever in use.

Be freaked out by the MicroFreak

By erich from boston
Music Background: Former band - bass: piano, synths

I bought this for a friend to introduce synthesis to him. He was a piano player but now he is physically challenged.

I have been working through Moog synths (a childhood dream) along with my Alesis Q8 and my DAW. It is a great time. But..

When my friend and I booted up the MicroFreak and started the manual I was amazed. First, the manual goes beyond what most manufacturers provide and gives simple, effective, and easy explanations of what is behind each function. Not only does the new user get to start creating immediately, but gets to understand the process and art of synthesis while learning the instrument. The sounds and sculpting capabilities are great and the vocoder is fun to work with.

One of the best aspects of the Microfreak are the keys: Capacitive Keybed! One of the features (my sales guy Alex Burgland, pointed out, thanks) that makes it easy for my friend to return to his creativity in music.

I worked with the MicroFreak and am amazed how easily it is to get the sound I want.

Great instrument for beginners and an addition to any studio. He is having a blast!

A cool mini synth

By Sweetwater Customer

It a mini synthesizer that can do many things. I buy this synth because it was cheap, but I didn't know it can do all of this. I like this synth and possibly going to gets some effects, so i can make some even cooler sounds. I would recommend this synth for any everybody who likes sound design and, wants a powerful mini synthesizer.

A True Hybrid Synth like no other!

By Floyd O. from GREENVILLE, SC
Music Background: Drummer for a long time (I’m ok but not great but I enjoy it), Former Recording Engineer and Studio owner for more that 20 years. Synthesizers Owner and Programmer since 1972 (yes 1972 with my first ARP 2600 an Mini- Moog)

So here is my take on Arturia's MicroFreak…
This is a real hybrid synthesizer like nothing else in the market. A digital and analog combination, Analog filters combined with Digital oscillators, and a whole lot more in the mix. This is one of those Synthesizers that pushes boundaries and opens up new possibilities, just like the ARP 2600, Mellotron and then the DX7 did years ago when I first started with Synthesizers (back in 1972)
I am not going to go into the details about just how much this little machine can do, you really have to experience it for yourself. What I will say is that it is a very welcome addition to my "arsenal of my Modular and Contemporary Synths (Digitize, Skulpt SE's, HydraSynth, 5 Roland Boutiques and ARIA to name a few) and has a large role in my Sound and Music Production
As for the "Buchla" Style "Capacitive Touch Plate" Keyboard, it is just something one needs to get use to playing. I know it's not for everyone but I think it serves its purpose and adds to the uniqueness of the MicroFreak. And here is the real benefit… twenty-five touch-sensitive keys that have Polyphonic Aftertouch. The touch-plate is pressure sensitive, which makes it a very expressive keyboard. Those features alone at this price point is amazing and worth the low cost of this "Freak" Synth. I now use this Keyboard via MIDI to play my Hydrasynth Desktop so I can take advantage of the Hydrasynths Polyphonic AfterTouch!
This is a BIG WIN for me!
Another huge asset to this Synth, instead of replacing it with a newer model, AKA MicroFreak MK II,Arturia has taken the position to continually Upgraded the Firmware adding new features, factory sounds, wavetables, functionality, a Vocoder and more. With Firmware V5 they really pushed the boundaries by adding a New sampling engine so you can Manipulate and trigger recorded audio using MicroFreak, 3 new granular engines: Scan, Cloud, and Hit modes for granular exploration more New Factory Presets, and now using MIDI Control Center, you can import your own samples, up to 24 seconds long and then send them to MicroFreak.
Tell me any other Synthesizer Manufacturer that is doing this! I applaud Arturia!
Not really Cons but what's not to like:
I bought the Vocoder Version with the Gooseneck Microphone. The Vocoder functionality is very good but some feel it's not the best Vocoder out there (I tend to think that this is User Error and not setting it up properly) You can use it 2 ways, you can dial it in using the Presets Knob. It has 16 Built in Presets for you to choose from, so that is your starting point if this is your first time using a Vocoder. I find it useful and effective but some others do not. I think this is a very personal preference. The other option is to From Scratch which is the most ideal and gives you more control
Steps to take: to Setup the mic:
Click on Utility button
Turn Mic Detection ON
Select Mic Settings
Adjust Mic gain
Then
Select the Vocoder mode using the Type knob (turn it all the way to the right)
WaveForm Knob selects the Carrier Signal
Timbre Knob Shifts the frequency Range of the Synthesized Signals
Shape Changes the Bandwidth of each Filter.
You should also make sure to use the Utility Settings to set the Microphone Parameters, like Gain and Noise Gate. The Gain and Noise Gate play an important part of getting quality Vocoder effects.
Build Quality: It's plastic but I feel very well built. I'm not touring with it or carrying it everywhere. It sits on my Workstation so again not an issue for me.

No Built in Effects. A simple Reverb, Chorus or Delay would be nice but again no big deal for me, I feed it into my ZOOM MultiStomp Effects Box like I do my other Analog Synths that do not have any built effects.

OLED display is very Crisp and sharp but a bit small for my eyes, but then almost everything in print is too small for my eyes.
Learning Curve might be a bit hard for beginners but still a perfect Synth to learn by and explore so don't let that discourage you!

USB Powering for many people has been unpredictable causing different issues but using the included power supply solves this problem, so why not just use it!.
Some complain about the CV Connectivity. It's offered but it's a bit underwhelming, though not an issue for me.
Lastly, ignore all of the less than positive reviews that you might read, like any instrument, each one has its place, so does the MicroFreak!

An absolute monster of a synthesizer for the size and price!

By Robert C. from Robinson, PA
Music Background: Sound designer, dark ambient/industrial musician for 15+ years

The Microfreak is indeed a freak of nature. This little beast has everything you need from experimenting with sounds and textural soundscapes to electronic beats to full blown noise assaults. Incredibly versatile and a must have for your studio's arsenal. The waveform manipulation is absolutely essential for customizing your own sounds and the splice and dice functions only add to the insanity. You'll never make the same sounds twice with this thing.

Sweet little synth!

By Andrew E. from Seattle, WA

I bought this as a fun little synth and it does that very well. However, I was surprised at how responsive it is as a MIDI controller, especially for percussion virtual instruments. Love it. This is a super portable controller and synth, and once you get used to the keys, you can do a lot of fun things with modulation! A winner, in my book. Grabbing all the preset packs from Arturia and Blankfor.ms is a winning combination of sonic fun!

Amazing little synth

By Sweetwater Customer

A truly interesting synth that packs a lot into a small package. Extremely versatile and that patch bay is truly impressive. The digital oscillators coupled with the analog filter is GREAT. My only minor issues with it are:

1: The vocoder is really poor which is a shame bc it was one of the main reasons I bought the synth. Luckily what it had blew me away so much that I kind of forgot about the vocoder. Don't buy this is you want a banging vocoder.

2: The lack of control voltage in/outs. It would've been nice if it were more semi-modular and you could control more parameters via CV

3: The lack of effects! This truly surprised me as with all of the digital stuff on this bad boy and amazing, inventive ways to sculpt the sound, that it totally lacks a reverb and delay! That seems like a terrible oversight to me.

Now it's possible that new editions of the firmware may improve the vocoder and perhaps add the option to add reverb and delay and so I see that as another major plus to this amazing synth. It has already become a big part of my rig. I'd give it five stars if it weren't for what I mentioned above but ultimately, you can't lose with this one.

Has to be plugged into a wall

By Brandon
Music Background: Corporal Quigg

I bought the microfreak almost exclusively for the vocoder to play/use/sing with during live sets. I managed to play a couple before noticing the pitch bar started acting up almost making vocals sound like some Christina Aguelera or some bs via vocoder. I wrote to arturia and all they said to me was "yeah microfreak has to be plugged into a wall or else it will experience some technical issues" why is this not specified literally ANYWHERE?! This is a huge flaw that should be addressed SOMEWHERE. I must say I am more than disappointed by this one from Arturia. Save your money and get a decent vocoder.

Electric Music Box

By JERRY S. from MI
Music Background: Guitarist/Sound Explorer

The most magical, dynamic, and expressive musical instrument that I believe I've ever played.

I own (more than one!) of these now and I'm waiting for the next Limited Edition to come out.

The Microfreak to me, is like a modern version of the Buchla Easel "Electric Music Box"...but, what do I know, I'm just an old guitar player.

Digital Arpeggiated Bliss

By Jake from Michigan
Music Background: Amateur musician

I always recommend this synth to anybody starting out or looking for a cheap addition to their setup. Very easy to use and program, though I honestly haven't figured it all out yet. Several digital synth engines to choose from and they all sound great. Awesome filters, envelopes, lfos, and even a "cycling envelope". The built in arpeggiator and 64 step sequencer are very easy to use. I can't really explain what the "Spice" and "Dice" buttons are but they are hands down my favorite feature of this synth for arpeggiations. Yes, there is even a vocoder! Since I've owned it, Arturia has released 2 updates for it that added some very powerful features! I am just hoping they release an update to add more arpeggiations modes/patterns because honestly, that's my only complaint.

A pro synth that is equally great for a beginner. Excellent all by by itself, or a great starting point for expanding later.

By Robert from Cincinnati, Ohio
Music Background: 44 years playing guitar

I recently had my 60th birthday and received a great surprise from my wife. I had wanted to visit Sweetwater for years, but was never able to work it out for one reason or another. Well, my wife reserved a hotel room in Ft. Wayne for my son and I. The next thing I knew, we were on our way! We live on the outskirts of Cincinnati, and it was a pleasant drive straight up 27. It was a beautiful day and a great experience! We took the tour, had lunch in the Downbeat Diner, went down the slide, and had a great visit to the music store! For anyone who hasn't been, I would highly recommend it! The customer service is first rate, and it couldn't be a more personable crowd. I came intending to trade in my guitar. The service desk in the store did their expert "once over" service, and it was a totally different instrument! I ended up bringing it right back home! The service was impeccable, and way over and above what I expected. The tech knew exactly what he was doing, and I felt completely comfortable allowing it to happen.

Enough of that! While in the store, my son became more that enchanted with this synth. This truthfully wasn't even on my radar. He once played piano, but just gave it up out of the blue. He had a real talent for it, and just walked away. It left my family more than sad and disappointed. It had been a while since he'd messed with anything musical. He'd forgotten nothing, but just didn't apply it. Well, I witnessed something coming out of him in the store that I hadn't seen for quite a while. I saw his original passion for music just bubbling in him. A synth was something I hadn't even thought about, but it definitely got his creative attention!

I won't address this item in any technical terms. That would only serve to make me look foolish! I am definitely not a synth guy. The various aspects of these things go well above my head. My younger generation son however, had no problem viewing it as self explanatory! He went straight to work! What I have since discovered is that just playing with this unit will take you on a journey. It is all but limitless. Not terribly long ago in the scheme of things, an item with this much processing power and capability would've cost SUBSTANTIALLY more, and would've been vastly larger.

After arriving home from our great visit to Sweetwater, I pondered this item for a few days. I began to realize that it really brought together a number of interests in one unit. It appeals to my son's, and most boy's, love of gadgets. It's an EXCELLENT starting point for anyone with an interest in exploring synths. It's definitely not a toy however. It's a professional tool that can be expanded upon if desired, or be fantastic all by itself. It's incredibly inspiring. It's tons of fun exploring new and interesting sounds, and the bottom line is that it kept my son's interest.

At that point, I decided to take the plunge and make the investment. All I can say is that my son has never looked backwards. He's had a groove going since the day it arrived! He's already experimenting with a "drum and rhythm" app on his iPad to use with it. I will likely look into a drum machine for Christmas after he's had more time with the synth itself. I realized that if it inspires him and gets the music out of him, who am I to define the means by which he's inspired? The synth may not be my thing, but it's most definitely his! If you have a kid with a half hearted interest in music that just needs a little kick, this just might do it. My first question was, "Why?" It was then followed by, "Why not?" It's getting the music out of my son. That's all I really wanted to begin with.

That you Sweetwater for an amazing visit, everyone's kindness, and your outstanding customer service. I definitely found something that changed my son's life. I'm convinced that there's nothing more fun and inspiring on the market for this amount of money. It was well spent!

Home Run!

By Sweetwater Customer

Arturia really knocked it out of the park on this one. It's my go to synth on just about every project I make, and I wouldn't recommend getting any other mono synth before this one. The mod matrix is really what makes this great, as not many all in one synths have patch points, and they are super easy to use.

Wow, just WOW!

By Virgil from FL
Music Background: Guitarist for 45 years, home recording enthusiast for 28 years

After watching a few videos on YouTube of this little guy, I was very interested in purchasing the MicroFreak. I've owned this unit for a couple months and have had a chance to try it out in a non-DAW setting as well as recording in Cubase 11 and it is unbelievably cool! I'm blown away at the price vs the punch this thing packs - the more I've dug into this, the more amazing it gets. There's TONS of tutorials on YouTube that will help you out with this and the sounds are just awesome. I don't see this little guy going away anytime soon and it will eventually become a staple in most small home recording studios and I can see it going on stage with me and my band eventually. Just when you think you have exhausted the cool settings on this, then you will start digging into the matrix and really say to yourself "This journey and the possibilities are endless!" Best money I've spent in the last 10 years - bam! Thanks Cameron for the great sales support also!

Such an awesome first synth

By Bruno

I was completely unsure as to what synth and audio interface I'd need for my first setup but Mike Wright set me up for success right off the rip. This thing creates such amazing sounds and it's really bending the way I have always thought about music over the years. The amount of modification you can do to your baseline signal is wild! I paired this with a drum brute impact and its a total blast! I'll never stop shopping at Sweetwater, the amount of quality of service and knowledge members on this team is beyond any other experience I have had at another other music store. Thanks again Mike!

A well-named device

By Sweetwater Customer

After only a few minutes, I realized why they call this MicroFreak. The sounds are incredible and the arpeggiator conspire to bring you to strange new worlds. I haven't yet synced this to my other equipment but I know the results will be pleasantly weird.

I love this!! Buy one now!

By Ty A. from Pennsylvania

I'm not a synth player. I know my way around keys a little. I'm a guitarist but wanted to add some synth to my recordings. I watched a few videos before deciding on the microfreak. Within about 5 minutes I had this figured out and was making some amazing sounds.

I thought it would be difficult to get certain sounds that I was looking for, but the way this unit is laid out, it's really easy to figure out what does what.

What I love the most is you can save the settings you modify off of the preset and still keep the original to to back to. It's a wonderful piece that I know will stay with me for a long time.

I would recommend this to anyone. It's a ton of fun to play.

Such a great little synth

By Zach S.

This thing packs so much power and expression into such a small package! The mod matrix is very powerful but also easy to use. It's like a modular synth but without all the wires. But worry not, if you love wires/modular like I do then the Microfreak is still a great choice with four CV outputs and a clock CV input, in addition to full MIDI capabilities. The touch keyboard does take some getting used to, but once you figure it out I feel like it's a lot more expressive than a traditional keyboard, even one with after touch.

Great service, only buy this from Sweetwater

By Gustuf Y. from Sansom Park, TX

Excellent starter with enormous sound potential - just a blast to play with. Was really enjoying this synth when a snafu/freeze happened on update. This is pretty rare from what I heard with Arturia equipment but i was so glad I bought it from Sweetwater. An excellent hassle-free return made sure i was back to patching in no time. Thanks for excellent service, friends. I will only buy my gear from Sweetwater thanks to their excellent return policy.

The best synth you can get on a budget!

By Sweetwater Customer

I have owned an Arturia Microbrute which was a great analog monosynth so I was eager to tackle Arturia's digital synth sequel. I am pleased to say that this synth is alarmingly powerful. It has great sound potential, superb synth engines, a complex yet easy to learn modulation matrix and a myriad of sync options to make it work with virtually any gear (it synced up to my Elektron Cycles quite well!)

The keyboard is really a superb feat. Being able to use this as a MIDI is an even better treat. Inspired by the classic Buchla boards, these capacitive sensors not only are a blast to play, but up to 7 parameters can be changed with just the pressure of your finger, allowing for expressive synths ranging from gorgeous low-pass sweeps to granular hellscapes. Portamento keys? Child's play on this machine. Once you control the fall and sustain of the cycling envelope (essentially pulsewidth modulation), you have come to the dark side. Welcome. We have cookies.

A cycling envelope can simulate a second, pulse-width controllable LFO and the dedicated LFO is quite powerful with two unique noise settings for true fractal modulation. The custom 3 modulation slots per synth really are what set this apart - borrowed from the MatrixBrute, it allows the user to control nearly any parameter on the synth they wish with only a few exceptions.

The synth engines are solid and fun to play with although you will want to mess with the modulation matrix to get the most out of them. I have done everything from Reed Ghazala circuit bending interpretations (thank you, Speech engine) to gorgeous 80's style megasaws with the Superwave. This thing can emulate classic Moog with just a little tweaking (thanks to an excellent analog-path filter that gives this digital synth a surprising warmth) and best of all? Arturia has already added MORE engines with a Chord engine and a Noise engine and... best birthday present ever... the Vocoder feature that was announced on my birthday. Thanks Arturia! Don't sweat if you bought the original Microfreak - a firmware update and $... for the TRRS microphone will get you up to speed. This is an instrument Arturia wants you to hang onto and it shows.

My only real complaint is that an onboard effect or two - like reverb - would have been nice. But for how much is packed into this synth - including a solid arpeggiator and a competent sequencer with 2 loops per patch - complaining about this small exclusion really seems like a first-world problem. It is also worth noting a great ADS envelope can make long falls up to 20 seconds or more, so you may not miss that anyways. And paraphonic mode will fool most people with polyphony even if it drops the master volume of the synth and loses some audible punch to do so.

I don't know why you're still reading this. Find $... and just buy this amazing thing.

Can do a lot. Has many limitations, but the things it can do are rather incredible.

PROS

CONS
- Sequencer is difficult to work with, and changing it is annoying

ASTOUNDING synth with the new Ultimate Patches upgrade!!!

The best sounding synth for this price point.

By Sweetwater Customer from Wisconsin

I have never ever thought there would be someone selling a great sounding synth with this many features at that price... This machine is no joke, despite its toyish appearance it really does sound great. My only gripe is the menu diving to change some settings for the Midi Sync and Sequencer.

Mind Blown, this MicroFreak is a must have. So much for so little!

By Brian R. from Huntington Indiana
Music Background: Semi pro musician and singer.

Intuitive layout and controls, can't believe that this is so inexpensive. The captive keys and ribbon slidder are extremely sensitive and response is lightning fast, synth sounds are deep, lush, and massive sounding. Some of the ethereal sounds are so impressive, I just can't say enough about the depth and expensive presets and the over all fantastic sound quality. The led screen is small, but bright and offers plenty of information on the oscillation patterns and filter changes as you make the and displays shapes, forms, and percentages. The ONLY regret you will have from buying this MicroFreak, is that you didn't buy it sooner. Destined to be a classic and a must have piece of synth gear.

Retro-Future Fun

By Sweetwater Customer

It"s taken me a couple weeks to really get acquainted with the MicroFreak. The out-of-the-box presets sound great and are plentiful; more so after an update.
Also, I prefer to use a TRS instrument cable to my studio mixer.
The printed circuit board keyboard is more expressive than I expected. The more key surface area covered by a finger yields greater effect.
Paraphonic mode allows for some decent chords within the limits of four voice polyphony.
The options in the oscillator section borders on overwhelming. So, creating your first patch from scratch can be daunting when choosing between basic waves, Superwave, two-operator FM, formants, speech (based on 1970s Texas Instruments speech synthesis), virtual analog, wavetables, and other digital synthesis models. I"ve listed about half. I often found myself changing synthesis models after routing modulations.
The filter section provides low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass setting with standard cut-off and resonance knobs. What is very helpful is the graphic display when the knobs are turned that reads out the cut-off frequency in Hertz (Hz). Like the oscillator, the filter section is best served by modulation.
There is a standard ADSR envelope, a LFO with six wave-shapes, a cycling envelope to add some curve, an arpeggiator, and a 64-step sequencer. The LFO, arpeggiator, and sequencer are all synchronize-able. I did run into difficulty with synchronizing the arpeggiator and sequencer MIDI clock from my DAW via USB, but found work around with other means such as the analog clock and MIDI. Analog clock didn"t seem to support triplets very well regardless of setting; the steps did quantize to the nearest non-triplet.
The modulation matrix is really the key to making outstanding patches. Take note of the matrix routing in the presets. The single knob interface to the matrix is easy to use. The assignable routings offer some really far-out possibilities.
Needless to say, the MicroBrute and its possibilities will be occupying my attention for some time.

BIG FREAK'N SOUND!

By Joe from Indiana

Don't let the "Micro" in the name fool you, this is a HUGE sounding synth. You can get lost in the amazing choices of presets and tweak anything to your heart's content if you want to make your own patches with the matrix. The main thing that traditional keyboardists usually mention as a possible negative would be the keyboard has no travel time, and you can't rest your fingers on the keys like how you would normally play. My opinion is that the keyboard is perfect for what the synth needs. Instead of a normal boring keyboard, it has an awesome touch sensitive almost circuit board like surface that resembles keys. I think it works great for doing interesting touches, taps, and pressure style presses. If you want the traditional style keyboard experience, I also highly recommend getting an Arturia Keystep to pair with this freakishly awesome synth. Overall, the MicroFreak has a huge range of options for any genre of electronic music and is a welcome addition to my setup. Thanks to my sales engineer Brian Lemert for his assistance as usual!

This Synth Has A Lot Of Depth

By Bill from Annapolis
Music Background: Sound Designer

Having had this synth for over a month now, I"ve got
To say it"s getting under my skin in a good way!

I have to say, it must have been designed to purposely cause one to have sleepless nights...coffee
needed of course!!

But seriously, it"s a hot bed of well thought out functionality and capabilities wrapped around a set of gorgeous oscillator types. At times I thought I was handling a VCS3 or a Buchla. So much capability within this system.

Love the Capacitance keyboard. Allows for a lot of
expressiveness. The slightest touch n roll of the finger
brings forth marvelous sound textures...especially
if you have it set up nicely within in the matrix. You can really explore here!!

It"s been a wonderful experience owning this system.
Looking forward to playing it after I finish this review!!

Hats off to Arturia on this!!!

Freakishly Fantastic!

By Chris H. from IL
Music Background: Producer

The digital/analog combo may have gone the way of E-MU had it not been for Arturia. This synth is amazingly versatile and I have already been inspired to use it in my production work. Having a synth with this much sonic capability should be a must have for most bedroom producers on a budget. The sound is anything but budget with fat basses, huge leads, wonky pads, fx sounds, and chill sounds. For the price point, it's modulation possibilities are outragious. I have discovered some minor bugs but with time those will swiftly be addressed by Arturia. Oh, and that touch-sensitive key bed, it is absolutely the most responsive thing I have ever performed on.

I really couldn't be happier. :)

Loads of fun in a tiny package.

By CK from Baltimore
Music Background: Composer for media, music tech instructor, experimental music performer

PROS: The modulation matrix, cycling envelope and different synth engines make for a crazy variety of sounds and behaviors. Documentation is informative and entertaining but does contain some errors/oversights, probably just word-processing errors. Sound design with this thing is so, so fun - as stated in the Sonic Labs review, new presets just fall out of you as soon as you turn it on. Oh, this might be the best part: I used my MF for 3+ hours while a passenger in a car, with a really old USB power bank. It barely made a dent in the power bank's charge - still showed 2/3 bars of power. My ears wore out first!

CONS: The physical power switch seems like a weak link in the build quality; I'm concerned about its longevity. Shift button has to be pressed quite firmly to operate.

In short, this thing is all about fun, experimentation and creativity, and that's exactly what I wanted from it.

Microfreak is a Giant Synth

By Gramps f. from Iowa
Music Background: keyboard player and song writer Hobby

I have a lot of hardware synths and the Arturia Microfreak gets a place at the top of the list for almost every category. Sounds great and very easy to use. Lots of choices... Lots. It is light in weight but heavy on sound, can run it off of a phone battery charger bank for hours. I really like the new key bed it is 3D with raised black keys and ridges between the others. I am very happy with what Arturia has made available...

Sounds fantastic

By Robert R. from Tampa
Music Background: Keyboardist, song writer, synthesist.

This little monster sounds way way better than the YouTube demos would have you believe. Very very inspiring! Love the touch keyboard. Needs a bit of effects, but otherwise it's genius!

Strange & Wonderful

By Sweetwater Customer

After seeing demos of the MicroFreak at NAMM I was intrigued but hesitant. The layout was somewhat atypical and I was unsure whether I'd enjoy the sound quality of a digital synth, having previously owned mostly analog. After seeing Daniel Fisher's demonstration and a demo model available on Sweetwater, I decided to pull the trigger. I couldn't be happier. This is a fun little synth with some wonderful features, not least of which including Matrixbrute-style modulation routing. The keybed is a little strange to get used to, but being a fan of Buchla, I'm happy to adjust. Hands down, the amount of features for the price sells this thing. Don't hesitate.

Im Freak!

By Exile t. from Minneapolis
Music Background: Hardcore producer and dj

This is a great synth. Unlimited on how much depth on creating own sounds. Presets are very cool, good range on different types. Knobs are smooth moving. Touch sensor is amazing, split second response. Very easy to learn.
I waited 3 months with a presales. Worth the time .

Worth the wait.

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Personal experimentation.

Finally here and loving it. Found my self in the dark not realizing the sun had set playing Kosmiche music on LeFreak midi out to Make Noise 0-Coast with a constant bubbly drip of Moog Mother 32 through heavy delay, providing the back drop. I got the Microfreak on Monday haven"t even come close to scratching the surface what I can do with it. This is my first digital synth and am blown away at the sonic possibilities. Not to mention the insane amount of modulation the matrix allows along with the motion recording. At the price allowing for all different forms of synthesis, this is definitely worth it.
