My Favorite Boost Pedal!

By James D. from Wisconsin on March 3, 2024 Music Background: 32-year guitarist

This is a killer boost pedal! What makes it stank out is the EQ section, it makes all the difference! Clean boosts boost all frequencies, bass, mid and treble, there are situations where this can be a bad thing. I use a clean boost after the preamp as a volume boost for leads which works great, but boosting the full range of guitar frequencies in the scenario makes any muddy or harsh frequencies stick out too. The flexible EQ on this pedal fixes that issue, that's why I love it, it's the perfect boost pedal, plenty loud and great tone IMO!

Clean boost, adds clarify, nice EQ option

Very happy with this clean boost, adds flexibility and control plus a nice tonal EQ option that just works as it should. Simple, effective, game changer for an analog pedalboard.

MXR MICRO AMP

Excellent, working with all kind amplifier.

One of the best ever!

By Sweetwater Customer on March 12, 2022 Music Background: 29 year guitar player, tone chaser & pedal fanatic.

This boost is one of the greatest boost designs ever conceived. The EQ makes this boost a champ in any spot in the signal chain. Easy to use and great tone, it can push pedals or amps into distortion or boost volume with ease, worth every penny.

You don’t know what you’re missing

Great pedal with multiple uses! Here's what I found:

-Front end clean channel: incredible amount of volume boost while gradually pushing the preamp tube into clipping. It's fun to find that sweet spot where you have a little bite/grit. Great for RHCP-like cleans. Even at lower gain settings, it adds a sort of fullness to the sound.

-Front end overdrive channel: works as an amazing gain boost. It does not color the tone at all! This pedal is a perfect choice if you are tired of OD/Distortion pedals that always warp your tone…
Of course you can add/remove treble and bass if needed to get a perfect sound dialed in. Set your amp to a classic AC/DC crunch and then engage the pedal to open up a thick lead sound for solos.

-Through back end/effects loop- seems to mostly add volume rather than gain to both channels. Perfect if you want to have a louder preset volume for lead breaks/solos while playing in a band.

A pedal every rocker should own!

Perfect, transparent boost in the effects loop

I bought this little gem at the recommendation from Dave Friedman himself. I was inquiring to have him add a 3rd "boost" channel in one of my 2 channel Friedman amps that I could use to boost solos when playing live. He said although he could, he suggested getting this pedal would accomplish the same thing for much cheaper (how f'n cool is that!?)
Well, I'm happy to report this absolutely fit the bill! Doesn't color the tone and with the added tone controls on this + model over the original, allows you to dial it in a bit more to taste. This absolutely accomplished my goal and seriously acts as a 3rd channel to my Friedman Wildwood 20 amp!

Love this thing!

I bought this to replace my OCD. I wasn't sure it would be good enough but I was way wrong. This thing is awesome! The treble and bass controls are super responsive and easy to shape your tone with. The gain does what it says. If I were to change anything about this pedal, I'd want there to be just 4-5db more gain. Other than that, it's perfect for my Mesa!

Very Versatile!

By Scott Sundberg from South Central MI on April 5, 2015 Music Background: Mr. Muckabout

Hits on all six for me! Using the Micro Amp Plus to hit the front end of my amp allows me to approximate the cooking tube sound I like, but at a low volume. The tone controls only add to the versatility of this pedal. It's very simple, but does what it does incredibly well. Before I tried it out, I was told the Micro Amp Plus was a good way to get the sound of a cranked Fender Silverface amp at a decent volume. I'd say it gets pretty close: your mileage may vary, depending on your amp and how to tweak your setup. 4.5 stars as no pedal is perfect, but this one is pretty darn close.

Excellent!

I replaced my old MXR Micro Amp pedal that I bought used. That old pedal had been used and abused and by the time I got it, the volume pot had crackles and dead spots and I couldn't always count on it to be there when I hit it for lead solo work.

I don't blame MXR because that old pedal played 100,000 solos I am sure...

This pedal has everything the old model has plus the ability to color your sound with the bass & treble EQ. Want the old pedal simplicity? SImply set your bass & treble to 12 noon.

Great pedal with MXR quality. This does exactly what I want it to do.

Thanks MXR for great pedals & thanks to Sweetwater for the best customer service in the music gear industry!

Great pedal, bad spot for power input

By Sweetwater Customer on January 11, 2024

I rarely leave negative reviews but this needs to be mentioned. The pedal itself is awesome--great boost with a versatile tone, everything you need in a boost pedal. My issue is the placement of the power input. It's right behind the input jack, perfectly in the way. So if its plugged into power, the power wire has to either go over the 1/4 input which means it's either liable to be stepped on when switching on which could damage it over time, or underneath which means the pedal rests off of the ground and every time you step on it, again it will damage the power input over time. Why would they do that?
