My favorite instrument in the world and the synth I began with

By Devin B. from CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI

When I decided to get serious about synthesis, modular caught my eye as a good way to learn. I did all my research and decided that the Matriarch is the one I must have, and it has never let me down. The only remotely limiting feature is the 4 note polyphony. I never get tired of exploring new sonic territory with this thing and it teaches me something new about synths almost every time Ive used it. If you're considering getting it, just do it.

Still an Exciting and Powerful Synthesizer. All Moog and Beyond!

By Floyd O. from GREENVILLE, SC
Music Background: Owned and been programming Synthesizers sine 1972, starting with an ARP 2500 and my own ARP 2600 and MiniMoog

I waited quite some time to finally write my review of the Matriarch. Reason being I really wanted to get through the "Love at first use" emotions and make sure that this Matriarch wasn't going to be one of those Synths that after you use it a while you sort of get bored with it!
WELL THAT IS DEFINITELY NOT THE CASE!
Once again, this is classic Moog and simply never sounds bad! The oscillators are based on the Minimoog Voyager (and not Moog's modular range) so you get greater stability but still with plenty of fatness and bite.
When I purchased it, it was available in two main color schemes: the original multi-colored version and the all-black "Dark Series" version (now discontinued). I went for the Multi-Colored Model. The colours aren't just there for looks – they serve a function, making clear distinctions on the panel between the 'modules', and the various inputs and outputs on the rear are also colour-coded, linking nicely to the front panel. Besides I am getting a bit tired of all of the Dark, Black Themed Synths in my Music Studio. The whole front panel is the super-tough 'Lexan' sticker. Every one of our synths with Lexan stickers for their panels still looks like new after years a and years.

You can't beat the high quality great-feeling Fatar keyboard with monophonic, duophonic, and paraphonic playability Yes, be warned this is a Paraphonic Synth not a Polyphonic. If you have never played a Paraphonic Synthesizer it does get some getting use to but it is not difficult.

The sequencer section is extremely easy to use and allows you to create keyboard-transposable sequences at any tempo (and with tap tempo) up to 256 steps in length with up to four notes per-step. One of the easiest Sequencers I've ever used.

The filter section is incredibly versatile (and sounds fantastic) it is based on the highly regarded Moog 904A module. This is a stereo filter (again like the Voyager) but with three switchable modes – Series HP/LP, Stereo LP/LP, and Parallel HP/LP. You have a single big cutoff control, two resonance dials (one per filter L/R and you can use resonance to filter out lows too) a spacing control to blend/pan between the filters, plus envelope amount and keyboard tracking. It is amazing.

With 90 modular patch points you really get the power of a Modular System without any confusion and clutter.

Ok, The absence of patch memory can be a disadvantage for some players who need to quickly recall and switch between different sound setups, especially in live performance. But that is not what this Synthesizer is aiming for. There is still enough versatility to allow for "on the fly" changes to be made during live performance.

There are a total of 74 Global Settings that can be changed using a convoluted series of pressing and holding certain buttons to get into the Settings Mode and then using the Black Keys to select the Parameters and the White Keys to change values and using the Chart in the Owners Manual LUCKILY there is a FREE OnLine Global Editor created by Mark Reid that uses Google Chrome. When your Matriarch is plugged into your Computer via USB and you launch the Editor all of the Parameters get loaded into the Editor and from there you can change any or all of the 74 settings with ease.

Bottom Line, out of the 40 Plus Synths that I own, this Matriarch is the one I go to everyday!

Amazing Synth!

By Doug R. from Duluth, GA
Music Background: Sound engineer at Nothing But You Multimedia,LLC in Duluth GA

The Moog Matriarch is becoming the main controller of all the synths in our studio. Itis running a modified Behringer System 55 and a Korg MS2000. It is also, by far, the most versatile synthesizer in the studio and we couldn't ask for better sounds. Thanks to Jon Kremple, our Sales Engineer for getting this to us, as always, quick and easy.

Six stars!

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: classical, jazz, ambient

I would give the Moog Matriarch six stars if I could. Everything from the packaging to its physical and auditory presence screams quality.

This was my first true synthesizer purchase, and I am glad I spent the extra time researching what I wanted. Several YouTube channels feature artists playing and explaining analog vs. digital synths.

Begs to be played

By Kyle G.

The Matriarch is a fantastic synth. The range of tones and timbres you can get out of it even before patching is incredible. It's an instrument that just begs to be played. I've found myself lost playing it for hours at a time (no regrets). The keyboard itself feels great, the knobs are sturdy, and it is just such a joy to play.

A Forever Synth

By George from NY

While the semi-modular aspect of this synth would likely be overwhelming to synth newbies, the jaded synth collector should find the world anew here, not like anything that preceding it. Moog said he hoped his machines inspired playfulness in creativity, and the Matriarch is an endless playground. Some features are fairly hidden in their functionality, but a rich collection of creator videos continue to unlock this giant's potential.

I used to have a mini back in the day and stupidly sold it. This ticks enough boxes to satisfy my Moog jones and also cover some other synths I also regret selling. Wont be selling this. Andy was great to work with.

Euphoric

By Donovan from SAN DIEGO, CA

The matriarch is an absolutely beautiful sounding instrument. Being my first analog synth, I was taking by the sound, but then wanted to play polyphonically -- I exchanged it for a prophet rev4; wow, completely different sound...I had to return the prophet, and get back the Matriarch. I now use autosampling when I have the polyphonic itch : ) Can't overstate how amazing and unique the matriarch sounds. The Matriarch is hardware worth paying for -- just an absolute joy to play.

Layout makes patching straight forward and its a lot more fun to me than menu diving. Plus, I can integrate it in unique ways with my other gear, etc. Not having presets is not really a problem (I take pictures or autosample). The fatar keybed is awesome. And the knobs, switches, and buttons feel great. Sliders are actually really nice for performance, as well as the big LP filter knob. And I love the color scheme. Analog delay is so dreamy.

If you're looking for that special "analog" sound, the matriarch won't disappoint!

Of course, Sweetwater has been amazing and big thanks to Nick Hammer for all his help with my orders (and exchanges)!

Bob Moog Would Be Proud

By Ernest B. from Brooklyn, NY

The Matriarch is a beautiful beast. At first the Paraphonic design threw me for a loop but as I began to understand its beauty and power. The sound of the Matriarch is pure analog goodness and simply breath taking.

A quick visit to Youtube will reveal dozens of videos displaying the Matriarch in all its glory.

As some have mentioned, changing global settings can be daunting and the inability to save presets can hinder your creative flow but the beauty of this instrument is its immediacy.

If you're looking for inspiration in a pure analog synth, this is it. I'm pretty sure the Matriarch will be seated at the right hand of the Model D. Moog is an exciting company that continues to revolutionize and revitalize the analog world. I look forward to their future synth releases.

Wonderful long-term investment

By J. A. from Cottage Grove

I have had this synth for a little under a year now, and I have to say it's just as much fun as the day I got it! The patch points give the synth a brilliant sound pallette that will have you exploring and discovering for hours on end. Worth every penny in my book! But I feel inclined to bring up some points that might turn people away from it.

For one thing, the paraphony definitely requires some getting used to. At times it can make playing a bit unpredictable, depending on what you are going for.

And of course, the lack of presets can be a turn off for a lot of people. But I love exploring new things, and I never really feel the need to make the same sound twice.

Another concern is the Midi in issues. When you hook it up to your DAW or another synth, the internal clock will kind of act out. If you have the delay set to clock sync, it will warble all over the place and sound atrocious. I asked Moog about the issue and I never got a response. Clock in via CV works like a charm though, so I am able to work around it.

If you can overlook those things like I can, the synth is definitely worth it! I will probably never get rid of it and it's a happy permanent installation in my setup!

Moog Matriarch is LIT

By Alexander from Los Angeles
Music Background: Audio Engineer

Yes this synth is fire. It delivers exactly what you expect from a Moog oscillator's thicc goodness; but what this synthesizer gives you is tons of options to get weird.

I have had so much fun using random patch points to play with my friends and synth random stuff together.

Another amazing feature I use a lot is the instrument input in the back. At first I only used my guitar but then realized I could patch anything to the back from my DAW and pass it through the modulation and stereo delay.

If you don't mind using pictures to reference your patches (no presets dawg) and you enjoy messing with knobs and switches while crafting your sound: this is one of the best synths for this purpose that I have encountered. Enough adjectives go listen to
It.

Infinite Sound Awaits

By EBNY from NYC
Music Background: Professional Musician

With the Matriarch, Moog has once again re-defined what we thought an analog synth could be. The combination of the semi-modular design, the stereo filter, the 4 oscillators, to the superb stereo delay, gives this synth endless MOJO. The Matriarch is a gateway to an infinite universe of sound. The Matriarch is a solid build, a joy to play, and inspires hours of endless doodling.

One gripe: accessing and changing Global Settings. I`ll leave it at that. Moog needs to address this ASAP. Considering most users will not venture much into global settings, I still give this synth 5 stars.

A True Instrument and Future Classic

By Jason :. from South Florida
Music Background: Guitarist, Studio Aficionado and Gearhead

I have had a couple of synths throughout the year, and this is the first synth that truly feels like a an instrument. The sound of the oscillators is so deep and 3D you can feel it in a way I only experienced with OB6. The best part is, there is no clumsy, overly-bright screen or computer to have to navigate. There are some features underneath the hood, but I did not find any of these setting necessary to tweak, as the layout has everything you need right up front. The color coordination makes is easy to know where everything is, I much prefer this model compared to the 'Darth Vader' edition they released, I think those people complaining about the colorful scheme are taking themselves a bit too seriously. I much prefer not having presets as I have now learned a lot more about how to quickly get the sounds I want, and have a sense accomplishment as I can recall these sounds from actual knowledge, and it is easy enough to snap a picture for reference if need be. The ability to patch in other Euro-rack modules is a huge plus, and allows for limitless expansion and integration. Ultimately the simplicity of the layout and the quality of the nobs, keys and buttons suggest this was designed with performance in mind. It should be noted that the feel of keys are exceptional and inspire me to want to play them. I have had this instrument for a little over a year and have had no issues, everything is tight and seems very well built. It should be noted that the mixer section is really something special as it blends the oscillators in a unique way I haven't experienced with other synths. Delay is warm and expressive.

NICE!!!

By David from USA
Music Background: Keyboard/synth hobbyist, former choral singer

The review title sums up my impression after first playing the Matriarch. The sound is beautiful, the harmonics and overtones rich and distinct, plus the stereo delay is a super-spacey dream. I've been cutting my teeth over the past couple of years on the Prologue-8 and absolutely love it; but the Matriarch opens up another dimension altogether for sound design, especially when connecting the patch points. Moog provides a booklet of a dozen or so sample patches (and a pack of cables) to get you started and I've gained enough confidence to try doing my own with fairly decent results.

I gave this 5 and a half stars due to there being no visual indications for the step sequencer or the global settings. I guess those will simply be a learning curve for me.

My thanks to everyone at Sweetwater and especially my sales engineer Paul Rowan for his service, assistance and patience. Also thanks to Paul and the people in shipping for having the Matriarch double boxed. Moog's packing of this item is a bit iffy to say the least, but with the double boxing it arrived in perfect shape.

BLINKY BLISS

By Scott A. from Alvin, TX
Music Background: Church Music/Worship

Finally I have it (!!) just over a year after having played one at the Moog factory in Asheville.
What a cool machine, and OH those blinky lights! My kind o' synth...harkens to the days of the original analogs.

Haven't tried out the mini plugs/modular capabilities yet, but the tonal variances available thanks to 4 mixable oscillators are wonderful. To me this beast shines best while arpeggiating/sequencing and then altering the tone each time things come around on the loop, but I've heard some fat lead sounds out of it on YT as well.
VERY versatile!!!

Some comments on the 'net belittled its construction but to me it's a lot like a Multimoog -- more plastic in the chassis then the Mini but still MOOGNIFICENT! Knobs/wheels have a superb quality feel. WORTH EVERY PENNY.

As usual Brian and Hunter did outstanding flying it to my door in record time -- ordered it late Tues nite/landed Friday afternoon! (how DO they do it?!)

Thanks SW!!!!

A Truly Wonderful Instrument

By Tom from Iowa, United States
Music Background: Pianist and electronic music enthusiast.

When I choose an instrument for my studio, one of the key factors I rely on is the ease with which the instrument will allow me to take a musical idea and make it tangible. In this respect, I give the Moog Matriarch a full 10/10. The instrument is wonderfully expressive, easily understood, and just a joy to get lost in for hours on end. The stereo filter and delay modules, along with the numerous patch points across the whole instrument, provide an accessible and tactile way to give life to the sounds I'm looking for (not to mention some sounds that are purely surprising). While I am still learning how to play paraphonically, the Matriarch is so far turning out to be a great companion on that journey.

Purchasing this instrument through Sweetwater, I should mention, was also an excellent choice. I've gone to the Knowledge Base several times already and have quickly found answers to the questions I had, and I've had a couple of positive interactions with the representatives to whom I've spoken.

The only drawback of the Matriarch I can find at this time is the present lack of a good tool for managing its global settings. Without a digital display or program/app to view the current settings, monitoring and managing them can be a bit tricky. This, however, is a very minor flaw in an otherwise gorgeous gem.

Moog Matriarch - absolutely blown away

By Sweetwater Customer

In the past 15 years I've owned about 20 different synths, from the Korg Mono/Poly to the Waldorf Microwave to Dave Smith/Sequential offerings, Moog Little Phatty (which I still own) and the Moog Matriarch is the most incredible sounding of all of them. The fact that it doesn't have presets actually turns out to be a benefit to me, as I approach the instrument more like a guitarist or a true synthesist: I'm shaping the knobs more just as much as I'm playing the keys. Also, the arpeggiator and sequencer are amazing on this instrument. It will do paraphonic sequences that you can hold while shaping the sound. You can do different oscillator syncs between the 4 oscillators which make for some unique sync sounds. I've been recording it for the last 3 weeks or so without even messing with the patch cables, making my own sounds from scratch. Today I finally looked at Moog's patch book and started doing the modular thing. Insane! The sounds out of this instrument are so rich and alive it just makes me want to play it for hours on end (which I do).

Amazing for modular

By AC
Music Background: Ex pro, currently for the fun of it

This synth is such a perfect match for a modular setup. You can patch external oscillators (4 if you want) and send them into the mixer. Blending wave table or digital osc and Moog osc yield tasty results. I really like cving the mod wheel out into a wave table position in to cycle through the wave to easily find interesting sounds. Stereo analog delay and dual filters. Envelope and end of envelope outs. Utility must and attenuators right where you need them. All the patch points you'll need to control And integrate modular stuff. I have been using this synth for about a month and has become an integral part of my synth setup. I can't recommend this synth highly enough.

A Wonderful Instrument

By Individual T. from Florida
Music Background: Electronic musician

The Matriarch is the finest synthesizer I have ever owned. This is like having an entire, integrated electronic music studio in one device. There is so much power on tap: The multi-mode stereo filter, the dual envelope generators, a powerful modulation section, a 2nd independent LFO, dual mults & 3 attenuators, the stereo VCA. Add to this one of the best and most musical arpeggiator & sequencer I've ever used, along with the velocity & touch-sensitive FATAR keyboard that plays like a dream and topped off with Moog's superb modulation & pitch wheels.

This is a true instrument, one that will keep you playing into the wee hours of the morning with satisfying results.

Moog Matriarch great for even a beginner

By Vincent B. from CO
Music Background: Synth rookie

I have had this Matriarch for a few months, and couldn't be happier. I am new to synths, but admire the history and sound of a Moog. I am of course still learning, always will be in learning mode with this, and it keeps me on my toes to really understand how to create my sounds. Brent from Sweetwater as always did a fantastic job with the order.

Sounds good but many drawbacks

By Jon

Cons: This color scheme is really jarring. For an instrument this big, it becomes an eye sore. I wish Moog would stick to its more elegant and understated design schemes. Rather than going for style, Moog seems to have gone for trendy fashion on this one. The bathroom colors on this really pop. The LFO does not sync to the internal clock from the ARP/SEQ module. Even if you patch it with a cable, there is an unusable delay. The octave switches on the oscillators jumps to the 2' octaves while switching and sometimes get stuck at the 2' pitch, even in lower octave settings. None of my previous Moog's have this behavior and the octaves switch cleanly on other Moog's. The sequencer has no visual indicators and its really uninspiring to edit. A row of lights, or a software companion would be immensely helpful. The lack of a software companion really makes me wonder how they can charge so much for a synth and offer so little support. The global parameters are a pain to edit because you essentially do it in the blind. Even Behringer offers a way to edit these parameters with software. No round robin option on the oscillators. They always trigger starting with 1, rather than the Mono/Poly (or Behringer Poly D) option of round robin. The sawtooth oscillator waves on this do not have the same punchy and thick tone of the Minimoog or Behringer Model D. That was a real let down.

Pros: The Fatar key bed is fantastic. The keys feel great and are a joy to play. And they won't turn yellow like the other Moog synths. The delay is absolutely amazing and it syncs to the ARP/SEQ (unlike the LFO's). While the oscillators don't sound as good as the Behringer Model D or other Moog synths, this synth is capable of some very nice mellow vintage subdued tones. The stereo filters and stereo delays play really nicely together and lead you into happy accidental textures. Even though the sidecaps are plastic and the sticker overlay is overly colorful, most of the synth's housing is made of steel and feels rock solid. I also really love that Moog increased the number of keys on this from their other instruments. 4+ octaves feels like a sweet spot for Moog synths. One thing I noticed is that the tuning stability on this is rock solid. That is much appreciated, especially given the fact that there are 4 analog oscillators.

Note: Ask Sweetwater to double box this. Sweetwater recently started shipping instruments without packing them, and they are putting shipping labels on the manufacturer's box. Moog is notoriously bad at packing their synths in flimsy boxes with inadequate interior protection. Mine arrived damaged.

Moog Matriarch User Impressions

By Ajinkya L.
Music Background: Synth / Music Hobbyist

This is a pretty incredible synth. The build quality is right up there at the extremely high Moog standard. Almost everything that this machine outputs is musical. I am especially a fan of the Filter which i think is based on the designs of the Moog Voyager's filter!

While it's definitely not cheap, this is a great synth to start the modular journey since it has everything one would need to understand basics of synthesis as well as sound design. It has a lot of patch points to experiment with modulation and each of the modules can also be connected to external modular synths (aka they can function as standalone modules!).

The manual is detailed and the patch-book has some great ideas to experiment with. The Sweetwater demo videos are a good example of the sounds this machine can make.

Special shoutout to Mike Conyers for the prompt support and for getting me a good deal as always :)

Moog Meets ARP 2600

By Michael S. from California
Music Background: Composing and Recording music for 45 years.

I've been an ARP 2600 user most of my life making my own supplemental gear and mods. I had three 2600's at one point along with Sequential Circuits, Korg and Kurzweil keyboards and samplers. I had played some Moogs but never owned one til I tried a Mother 32 and a DFAM. They sound nice, the interface is very different and I wasn't crazy about the small euro rack package.
Then I saw the Matriarch, a Moog structured similar to the ARP 2600 that had features already built in like Stereo Delay and a Sequencer. The flexibility is amazing with patch points throughout and MIDI in/out. I use my ARP as a live instrument, playing in real time and patching on the fly. That was why I wanted the Matriarch, it is structured to do the same. The difference in the sound is what separates these two pillars of analog synthesis. I have always loved the hard edge tight sound of my 2600. The Moog provides a softer sound with a different way of control so they compliment each other when playing live. I am still exploring the sonic possibilities with the Moog but I can't wait to interface with the ARP to attain the ultimate electronic audio manna from heaven. Very happy with this purchase.

This is actually the one

By Joseph from Chicago
Music Background: Hobbyist

My synth nerd friends and I have a running joke about how predictable we are. Whenever one of us is pumped on some new synth that just dropped at NAMM, we inevitably will declare (in all seriousness) "it's all you need!"

The joke, of course, is that no synth is actually the last synth you'll ever need. Every synth presents its own mixed bag of features, ergonomics, and sound for the price point.

But for me, this synth might actually be The One.

I've had a lot of synths over the years, and I miss things about all of them, but this covers a lot of bases.

It has the stereo filtering and the longer keybed I miss from my Voyager
The paraphony I miss from my Pro 2
The ~vibes~ of a few vintage beasts that have come and gone
The midi clockable bbd delay from my sadly departed MF-104m (the time is a little shorter, but this unit can clock divide a tapped tempo unlike the mf-104m, and it's in friggin STEREO. And it sounds just as good as the 104m to my ears)

It interfaces with euro deliciously and it made a few of my euro modules redundant.

But then it has so much more.

My fav hidden functionality: when you add voltage to the first oscillator, it also passes on that added voltage by default the other three. That means if you use a precision adder module as an octave selector, it changes the octave of all four oscillators at once. This is awesome if you are playing it like a poly synth and want to run up and down octaves with voltage control.

Is this the last synth I'll ever need to buy?
Honestly, maybe. It basically cured my synth GAS. And that is nothing short of a small miracle.

The downside: as of release, the firmware was wonky and getting the sequencer to play nice with an external clock was all but impossible. I heard this has been fixed, however.

Legendary

By Brian from Ohio
Music Background: synth enthusiast

I've taken over three months to truly dig into this synth and it's amazing. Many have already highlighted some of its wonders (49 keys with patchable velocity and afertouch, beautiful sounding oscillators, 256-step sequencer, 4-note paraphony etc.) so here's a different take. I heavily invested in the entire Voyager line and have a significant space dedicated to my beloved Moogerfooger pedals. The Matriarch handily replaces 4 of them (MF-101 Lowpass Filter, MF 104 Analog Delay, MF 107 FreqBox, and CP 251) and it gives the Voyager a run for the money (aesthetics, patch memory, touch pad keep the Voyager a top contender for desk space). In comparison to the 4 pedals listed the Matriarch has much cleaner delays, snappier envelopes, and with the exception of the CP-251 lag processor all capabilities are present or even expanded. The oscillators can even be frequency modulated as in the FreqBox! The way Moog has included full fledged modules in the Matriarch with inputs, outputs, and CV control is amazing! Not only is it an amazing sounding synth it is also a uniquely capable effects and CV manipulation powerhouse. For the moment my Voyager is in a case, and I've regained 6U of rack space.

This synth is amazing. It's a lifetime keeper.

As always, my Sales Engineer Tom rocks. I got one of the very first units to hit Sweetwater.

Something Special

By Marco from Bay Area, California
Music Background: Hobbyist - for 40 years, haha

Interesting times we are in whereas I started playing guitar back in the late 70's (oblivious to analog synths), got into synths around 2000 with digital equipment, and now going on 20 years as a synth enthusiast, I find analog is THE HOT THING again! And as it should be, just as a Stradivarius violin never stopped sounding great.

My latest treasure is the Matriarch. I have been curious about modular for a while, and also keep saying "one day I'll buy a Moog". And now this synth was calling me out..."ok, now are you interesting in buying??" Yes I am.

I like the "gateway drug" approach here. You can dial up really amazing beautiful sounds with no patching. The signal flow is super easy to understand laid out left to right if you know the basics how subtractive synthesis works. Heck, even if you don't know, you will learn well on a synth like this. Since it sounds so good, it really invites you to twist knobs & make sounds.

Four oscillators with paraphonic settings...so much more interesting things can be found in exploring this vs. a straight up monosynth. But in unison mode, it is a HUGE sounding monosynth as well. And then you get into patching as a modular. I am just starting to get into this, and this synth is my classroom. The sequencer, delay, and other performance features is a mind melting trip. Reminds me of the feeling of wonder & fascination when pressing keys on a synth as a little kid..."I wonder what happens if..."

Ultimately it comes to sound of course with any instrument, and this is a highly musical instrument. It inspires me to make music, and it also forces me to get it down in a recording since it is old school with no patch memory. I was working with a track the other day, and added a very short four note sequence every forth measure with the Matriarch on a track using other instruments. Although it was the most minimal little thing in the track, suddenly this very subtle little part took the track way over to a level that surprised me (as in this sounds better than I thought I could do). Amazing!!

Tangerine Dream Weapon

By Sweetwater Customer

I can't get over how amazing the Matriarch sounds.. It's almost like if Moog designed an ARP2600 with all of their best Modular units. If you wish to create Berlin era sequences & sounds (Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, D.A.F) this is the machine. The added "Ratchet" feature and BBD Analog Delay, with the ability to create and jump around 12 sequences is pure hypnosis. The 4 voice polyphony, Moog Oscillators (5 including the LFO as an OSC) will overwhelm any environment, and cuts through mixes with ease. I've never heard a synthesizer with such a big stereo presence before. Make sure to use headphones or decent speakers when listening to the demos and you'll hear what I mean. The best synthesizer for the price in 2019 in my opinion.. Beyond a future classic

Limitless

By Drew
Music Background: synth nut

Many synthesis engines have come and gone through my studio over the years but none have had such an immediate and intimate connection with my creative process as the Matriarch.

Provided you have a foundation in the methods of sound synthesis the Moog Matriarch can offer a pallette of analog modular sounds that is both highly precise in pitch and timbre as well as exceptionally dynamic in character and originality. All with almost no effort from the end user.

The way I see it, if this is an addition to your preexisiting eurorack modular system you are getting a very generous deal by market standards (14 modules with a boutique keybed and 256 step sequencer for this price is kind of nuts)

Now if this is going to be your first modular synthesizer I'm happy for you but... you better buckle up ;-)

Incredible warm and full Moog perfection

By JON G. from Covelo, CA

I was longing for this synth as soon as I saw the amazing promo video, but I didn't think I'd be able to afford it. I came into some money and decided to invest in this beautiful instrument. I have absolutely no complaints. It is a beautiful piece of hardware that will compliment any musician, from electronic dabblers to full on noise musicians.

If it seems like a big investment, which I understand that for most it would be, but you are considering it - BUY ONE. It will exceed your expectations.

Excellent Synth - What Robert would have created

By Prof C. from Jacksonville, FL
Music Background: Professional Musician, Educator, Engineer, Producer

Hello,
I had the opportunity to sit and play with the Matriarch at the Moog Factory in Asheville, NC this summer. I also had the wonderful experience to meet Dr Moog many times in the 70s and work with him in Master classes he gave.
I was discussing with Nic at the factory about this synth and we both agreed, if Robert Moog was still alive this would be the most likely direction he would have taken in the design.
The synth was analog Moog sounding and offered enough complexity to stand alone.
I am currently saving to get one and continue a wonderful exploration into the modern/retro rich sounds of Moog.
At this price, I believe this will be a game changer for Moog in todays synth industry.

Perfect Muse

By Aaron from Carmel Indiana
Music Background: Life long love affair with music

If you are reading this then you are considering purchasing this wonderful instrument. Stop reading about it and do yourself a favor and buy it. I got this thing home and couldn"t be happier with what I am hearing. The secrets hidden within are many and I am sure I will never be able to actually unearth everything that this thing is capable of, which is a good thing. It also plays well with others (modular bliss) and the stereo filter creates something that is only understood when you hear it in person (the louder, the better by the way). Did I mention all the wonderful possibilities when you add in the stereo VCA and Delay!!!

Yes I have also played my guitar through it and I am blown away by how good it sounded. I patched it through my Grandmother"s reverb with this Matriarch"s delay and WOW!

Last thought: It is rare to find a musical instrument that draws inspiration out of you and moves you to create new and exciting musical ideas. It has been my experience that even really great or expensive gear just makes playing easier and rarely do they cross that threshold and have that "it" factor. That is exactly what the Matriarch has been for me, and it definitely has "it".

Side note of gratitude: Thanks Joel for making this happen for me early on in the deliveries of this instrument.

Stop reading this and purchase one already!!! :/
