Stylish Studio Mic Pack for Instruments and Vocals

Smoldering good looks aren't all you get from the MXL 550/551R Studio Microphone Ensemble. This fiery mic pair equips your studio to faithfully reproduce the breathy detail of a vocalist's voice and the fast transients of a splashy hi-hat cymbal that your standard handheld stage mics may be missing. Singer/songwriters will love the 550/551R Studio Microphone Ensemble for its ability to capture acoustic guitar and vocals live in the same room. And here at Sweetwater, we have gotten loads of miles out of these mics for two-mic drum kit applications, live lead and harmony vocals, stereo piano pickup, and even dual-miking guitar cabs. The MXL 550 is able to give voices a dash of that larger-than-life studio vocal character, with a natural-sounding cardioid pattern that is great for picking up performances without overemphasizing the sound of a room. The companion MXL 551 pencil condenser boasts the speed and flatness to reproduce the transient-rich response of percussive sources, such as cymbals and acoustic strums. Across the board, a robust FET architecture gives both mics in this pack the quiet operation to minimize noise in your studio. Factor in an included set of mic stand adapters and a foam-padded hardshell case for surviving life on the road or in a crowded mic closet, and you'll find that the red carpet–ready MXL 550/551R Studio Microphone Ensemble is one mic pack that punches well above its weight.

Note: The MXL 550 and 551 microphones require +48V phantom power (+/- 4 volts) from your interface or soundboard. Contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer for more information.

Subtley Sweet!
I must say, I accidently walked in on this pair 2nd hand never used for less than half retail, While picking up a few last minute packs of strings at a local music store. Traditionally I always buy my stuff at Sweetwater through my man Dan VanAmerongen "Dan the Man" and always will! Figured can always use backups.Recently I used the 550 on a scratch vocal to a new release I wanted to do. Well as fate has it the scratch vocal became the vocal track to keep! It also worked well on my Guild True American coupled with the fishman plugged in as well. No this it not a high tier mic. But does not have to be. It has a colorful warmth with yes a slight high mid boost. Amazingly I needex very liitl if any EQ to the lead VOX. Background vocals did same as well. My 2nd MXL mic I have used for VOX and I am surprizingly impressed. Bought the Tube MXL V69XM from Sweetwater with same results of in your face well rounded vocals with a subtley sweet warm punch! Glad Sweetwater added this lineup of mics to their inventory. I am fairly persnickity about tone and accuracy and these really deliver without the European price tag! Nice stuff! Not Neuman or AKG etc. BUT! You need these in your locker! Only reason of 4 not 5 is this doesnt have shock mount setup!

Great Condenser Mic Set
I used to use a similar set of MXL condensers when I was recording my acoustic drums, and they were great. So when I decided I wanted to buy a set of condensers for my non-electric instruments (Guitar. Mandolin, Uke, Bongos, etc.), I looked at MXL first. These mics look and sound great, especially for this price point. Thanks Matt and Sweetwater for another great purchase.
solid mic set
IDK. been through plenty of mics; tube powered large diaphragm condensers, DIY condensers, dynamics etc. the 550 is always my go to for vocals and my drum room overhead. great clear capture when used with a good mic pre. the 550 has a high end bump, but if you know it's there, its a non issue. i recently got a second set because my Drum L&R overheads became inop. so i'm going to use the 551s as L&R overheads. and see how it goes. then i'll have an extra 550 stationed as the room mic and can use the other for my vocal instrument area. the price is attractive as well. good stuff
Very cool mics!
For the money you can't beat these mics! The large one I use on vocals and the smaller one and Guitar with great success ! I liked them so much, I bought another pair!!
