Solomon LoFReQ Sub-style Dynamic Microphone - Black
Solomon LoFReQ Sub-style Dynamic Microphone - Black Reviews
To capture the full frequency response of a kick drum, many engineers have deployed a DIY method involving a reverse-wired speaker. The Solomon LoFReQ offers you an easy, foolproof way to achieve the same result — without tearing your speaker apart. This sub-style dynamic microphone boasts a 6.5-inch driver, with a bidirectional polar pattern, to capture an impressive 50Hz to 3kHz. The LoFReQ's gain and impedance are a near match for a 52-type dynamic microphone, and it includes a customized inline pad for controlling unruly levels and a built-in mount for easy attachment to a standard mic stand. A rugged Tolex-wrapped fiberboard shell, heavy-duty protective grilles, and a robust Neutrik output jack equip the LoFReQ for perilous front-of-kick mic placement. To top it off, the LoFReQ weighs a mere four pounds — much lighter than previous sub-style microphone solutions.
It's great, as long as you know what to expect.
I think my expectations were a little off. It sounds exactly like a speaker, used as a microphone. There's no blast of sub-bass frequencies and certainly no highs. It's more of a muffled, mid-range sound with a low signal. You won't need a Cloudlifter but it'll need to be turned up quite a bit. Then add a low-pass filter and maybe boost the lows a little. Even then, the effect is a subtle warming. In combination with a regular kick mic, it's exactly what I wanted.
A Great Way to Capture Low End
Works great. Does exactly what its supposed to do. I would definitely recommend this if you are looking for something to round out the sound of your kick drum. It's also reasonably priced compared to the other sub microphones out there.
Added low end to bass drum
Researching all options, considering cost too I bought this sub mic for a total complete bass drum sound. My drum set sound is very live and full ! Along with another mic in resonate hole offers eq options. I like that this sub is just a perfect size and less obtrusive than others. Good cost , sound and size makes this a good value. It takes a little time to adjust to a very different sound . It's an option to capture that thud in combination of bass drum heads and tuning. I play 1978 Sonor heavy beech and Ludwig classic maple .
Great tool, but not a must have
Sounds really great and does exactly what you'd expect, but there are so many plugins that can get a similar result that it's hard to justify using up a channel just for this. I didn't get to try this on a bass amp, unfortunately.
I manage to find a buddy with a prototype
Its just straight facts that this picks up a way more desirable direct sub feel of the bass drum. Doing a live comparison between this, the beta 91, and beta 52, I pretty much muted the beta 52 and got more than I ever desired from this alone and adding the 91 to still get the presence and attack for a modern rock and metal feel fly there! Way less back ground noise. The impact of the sub I felt was missing or had to do way too much too get from this with practically doing nothing.
Solomon
very good Solomon
It's really cool
I paired it with a Shure Beta 91a and it really does the trick. It adds this like foundation to it that you didn't know you were missing. It's really cool! I think those two are going to be a fantastic pairing.
Low end
Works better than I thought
I love it!
This is great inexpensive mic that gives me just enough more low end when I record. An added bonus is that it's dynamic so it doesn't need phantom power and won't pick up the whole kit like a condenser would.
Does Not Disappoint
Solomon Mics delivered with this one. Solid option as a secondary kick mic and allows you to be creative with your primary mic placement. Also, very well built.
Hello there low end!
This is just what I was missing on my kick. Regardless if you trust your 28" kick, this baby delivers the low end you have always wanted to achieve. Even without eq, what you get is just phenomenal!
Great Mic Addition
I can't compare this microphone to other similar microphones, but what I can say is that it significantly elevated the sound of the kick drum over using just a Beta 52A-style mic and far more effective than adding a Beta 91A-style mic. I can strongly recommend this mic to bring the thunder to a rock-style band.
