Arturia KeyStep Pro 37-key Controller and Sequencer Reviews

37-key USB/MIDI/CV Keyboard Controller, with Aftertouch, 4-track Polyphonic Sequencer, 16-track Drum Sequencer, Clock Sync, and Metronome

Combining powerful sequencing abilities with a 37-key, velocity-sensitive keybed with aftertouch, the Arturia KeyStep Pro may be the controller and sequencer you've been waiting for. Equipped with USB for use with your software instruments, MIDI for your hardware synths, and CV/Gate/Mod outputs for Eurorack modular synthesizers, there is little the KeyStep Pro cannot control. And with its four-track polyphonic sequencer, dedicated 16-track drum sequencer, and advanced functions like randomization, arpeggiation, and chord modes, it's clear the KeyStep Pro is definitely not your average keyboard controller. Whether you perform electronic music onstage or have a wide range of gear in need of a comprehensive controller, you'll be impressed with the Arturia KeyStep Pro controller and sequencer.

meets the expectations of quality device from Arturia

By Alexander T. from SEWELL, NJ

KeyStep Pro was my second Arturia device purchase; I also own the Polybrute 6. I picked the Keystep Pro to use as a sequencer for my modular, keyboard, and drum synths. The layout of the sequencer is thought out well, the keys are compact, the overall built quality of the device feels premium for the asking price. It was designed for use in a live performance setting, so the access to controls and the workflow are as immediate as one could wish.

For new users, I recommend setting MIDI IN and OUT on a track in Keystep Pro to different channels to avoid a MIDI loop. A free program such as "MidiView" will allow you to monitor MIDI information in real time, so that you can see the MIDI information coming from the sequencer, in case there is any need for troubleshooting.

Keep in mind that no device is perfect for all - one must pick what works for their needs and workflow. That being said, the Keystep Pro and Beatstep are the top-selling sequencers on the market today, and one hopes Arturia will keep the firmware updates coming for the Keystep Pro user base.

Six Months in….Dead

By James T. from Coloma, MI

This morning, I attempted to power up this fairly pricey controller. It's dead. No response. Tried other outlets just in case…nothing. Utter, utter garbage. $ is a bit steep for a controller that lasts six months. I've purchased a LOT of Arturia hardware and software and now I'm pretty sure it was a mistake. Avoid.

Overkill for me but a good future proof investment

By Tobias H.
Music Background: Hobby

I just got back into edm as a hobby and needed a midi controller mostly for DAWs but also capable of driving other midi devices like the syntakt standalone. I tried novations 49 key controller and the keys are awesome but it's too big and I didn't like the arp.

So I have only limited comparison points to go by but here's what I like about it:
1) it's compact
2) it's pretty much plug and play for Ableton
3) 4 tracks seq and or 3 arps + drum track is great even with a DAW
4) the arp is something else...
5) I can add non-midi hardware should I need to

Here's what I dislike:
1) sometimes it hangs itself in Ableton (requires device restart)
2) probably my fault: It keeps getting out of sync using the stop/play buttons with Ableton, I was hoping it would at least sync to a full bar
3) the keys are quite small
4) the control mode and mapping knobs in Ableton results in the knobs zeroing out instead of being offset by my current DAW values.

Overall it's a great product and most issues are probably due PEBKAC.

A ton of fun!

By Omni T. from Coloado

I've had mine for about a week now and it is a lot of fun. I'm still getting the hang of how deep this thing can go, but once you get it set up in your favorite DAW, it's insane how much fun it can be. Props to Arturia for making a solid music-making tool.

Great features, but missing Keyboard transpose and it freezes all the time.

By Pedro F. from North bethesda, MD

The feature set on this is great, I love being able to assign different channels to different tracks in my daw to load up a template and have drums synth piano ready to go at the click of a button.

However not having the ability to transpose the keyboard, a feature midi controllers from the 80's have, is a huge oversight, especially since the keyboard has a button labeled transpose. Unfortunately this transpose button only allows you to transpose sequences. On top of that the keyboard freezes all the time and I have to unplug and plug it back in. I wish there were other 37 key keyboards with similar features on the market that had the ability to transpose. A 37 key key lab would be incredible.

A step above

By Robert D. from Missouri City, TX

I've recently started using the Arturia KeyStep Pro 37-key Controller & Sequencer.
It is of excellent quality, with a natural feeling keyboard. Using the CV (control voltages), MIDI, or USB, you can literally connect to anything and make music. The sequencers are easy to use with four separate areas of play. As with all things Arturia, excellence shines through in everything. I bought the smaller Arturia Keystep Controller & Sequencer first. I was impressed with the ease of use and decided to buy the larger, more full-featured Arturia KeyStep Pro 37-key Controller & Sequencer.
Sold at a great price by the awesome folks at Sweetwater.
No Regrets.

Very Nice

By EDM from Pennsylvania
Music Background: Involved in music since the’60s

Built really well, very nice overall, controls have a nice feel to them, does everything I want it to do. What's not to like? (I'm using it with an Arp 2600-M). Another plus is the free 2 year extended warranty that Sweetwater includes with the keyboard. Fast shipping, very happy.

A really solid MIDI controller for a CV studio

By Sweetwater Customer from SANTA FE, NM

I live the Keystep Pro more, the more I use it. Some features are a bit hard to find and the mini-LCD screen is pretty lame, other than that it's great. The aftertouch is particularly nice and the CV outs have saved me many times so far, where other gear fails to get things done.

This is a standard and essential addition to any CV-heavy setup. The mini-keys take getting used to but in the end I like having more octaves in the same space.

Diving in Head First

By Bob S. from Anoka Minnesota
Music Background: Guitar player, keys, synth etc...

This is my first stand alone MIDI controller and I kind of went all out. I'm giving this 5 stars because it does everything I need it to do without being overly complicated. The price was a little more that I wanted to spend but the features are worth it. Excellent build quality and easy to learn. I chose this for the multiple track CV outs, it all works together seamlessly.

A music experimentation tool at its best.

By Bob M. from Phoenix, Arizona
Music Background: Musician, Producer, Sound Engineer

I love this wee keyboard...but don't let it's small size fool you. The Arturia Keystep Pro MKII is a powerhouse for creating 4 tracks of synchronized beauty or mayhem. The editing feature set is unmatched. This keyboard would have had a 5-star rating if it wasn't for the fact that it left me wanting more tracks. Four is good but eight would have been better. :)

What's not to love

By Lee from Portland, OR
Music Background: 20+ years of electronic music

I'm a fan of hardware sequencers and this fills the gap between my beatstep pro, which will probably start collecting dust or go on CL soon, and my varigate eurorack sequencer. Pretty easy to learn, just go on YouTube and checkout Arturia's series of tutorials. Loopop also has a review that really helps with understanding. But the reality is if you have any experience at all with other hardware sequencers, you'll come up to speed pretty quickly. Fit and finish is about what you would expect at this price point, but feels solid. Keyboard's not great, but you're not going to play piano on it, are you? It's good for capturing ideas, which is just right for me. Overall, I find myself moving more away from Logic and towards the keystep.

Key step is awesome

By Russell from Atlanta
Music Background: Intermediate in some beginner in others

I love the different scales and arp sequences, and that it does CV and 4 track polyphony. Had to read part of manual to get it set up in ableton but it's really great how much gear it can control and switch with ease.

Solid build, feature rich for what it is

By David from Santa Cruz Mountains

First off, there is a TON of material on the web in how to operate this (including many tutorial videos from Arturia themselves. The enclosure, knobs, keys, and knobs are very well made and feel good interacting with them. Sequencing is super easy and the variation engine on randomizing a sequenced notes and order are very inspiring.

Reasons why I am giving this 4 instead of 5:
- There is no way to limit a sequence to just one of it's three midi outs and bare as of broadcasting to all outs.
- Would love to allocate the pitch / velocity of CV and give each CV drum track it's own velocity or mod.

Hopefully my issues will be rectified with future firmware updates, but both of them are not deal killers.

Huge learning curve, cheaply made and has many bugs

By Gary J. from Encinitas, CA
Music Background: Professional musician and studio owner

I have to disagree with other reviews claiming it's "easy" to use. I found the learning curve to be huge. The "owners manual" is useless and Arturia has no videos online to show you how to use this thing. I keep getting very sloppy sequences, not at all tight as they should be. It also "freezes" and just rapidly repeats one note on all the connected hardware synths and drum machines. This happens randomly when a sequence is playing. I have to turn off and turn on the KeyStep Pro and the connected hardware synths to make this stop. I contacted Arturia tech support about this and they don't seem to know how to resolve this. The keys, pads and the unit itself seem cheaply made to me, especially the feel of the keys. I had really hoped this unit would greatly benefit my work flow, but it's been a cumbersome and unreliable from the gate. Unless you want to spend your days and nights trying to get results from this unit, I would recommend you save your money and look for a different piece of gear that's reliable and user friendly.

Very Easy To Use

By Sweetwater Customer

I got mine not that long ago, it works great. Its NOT made out of plastic and is pretty heavy. Arturia really put a lot of thought into this sequencer. It is also very easy to use. I can see this being a big deal for Eurorack setups this coming decade.
