K&M Boom Mic Stand

By Lark Watts from Winchester, KY on April 29, 2024 Music Background: singer/songwriter--home studio enthusiast

I have several K&M mic stands, so I already knew the quality was very good. I needed a tall/sturdy mic stand to put my (very heavy) Warm Audio 47 on for vocals. I also bought the K&M 21431 Mini Microphone Boom Arm to have an extra angle option. It connected perfectly. So, if you are looking at this stand, consider adding the boom arm.
I will be getting another one of these combinations to use for drum overheads.

Great intermediate priced stand for drum overheads.

By James Williams from Fredonia, NY on December 11, 2023

If you don't want to shell out hundreds and hundreds on one of the more expensive rolling drum mic stands, these are a very solid intermediate-priced unit that does the job. I've hung fairly heavy tube mics from them (Warm Audio 67 clones) without worrying. They are fairly heavy with a heavy base and a small counterweight on the end of the boom arm. They will sway a little but won't fall down or collapse unless you really push them. I had a couple of SE filters on them at one point, so that the rear of the microphone was shielded by foam. They still held up.

Best boom stand

I have owned many different boom stands over the years. Theses K&M stands ar worth every penny. I use them in the studio, drums, and keyboards.

Solid stand that does exactly what is supposed to do!

Very solid stands

By Sweetwater Customer on December 30, 2022

These are heavy duty and much more solid than any other stand I've ever used.

Best Mic stand ever!!

By Jefferson Tech from Jefferson, OR on December 4, 2021 Music Background: sound engineer

If you read the specifications, this stand is a hefty boi, MEGA if you will. But on the converse, it has a hard time tipping over and it holds everything in its place while looking sharp and minimalistic at the same time. Sure, there are defiantly lighter mic stands out there, and it is a workout to carry around, but it does not get more reliable and sturdy than this. K&M is the golden standard. (Btw we used it for Sennheiser EW-D microphones and Audix pencil-style drum mics)

K&M 21021

By Benjamin on March 8, 2021

This microphone stand is one of the best I've used in this price range. It's extremely sturdy and versatile. So far, I've used it for drum overheads and for flying mics above a wind ensemble. I haven't had a single problem. It is a rather heavy stand, but I always feel comfortable putting even my heaviest mics on it. I highly recommend the stand for anyone looking to mic any sort of overheads or ensembles. You won't be disappointed.

Yep, this is the real deal.

FINALLY, a boom stand that inspires confidence for my large-diaphragm condensers. Its' tall, and it's heavy (around three times as heavy as a standard light-duty stand), and with two of these I can finally get the positioning I want for my drum overhead mic's, without feeling paranoid that the slightest touch will tip them over.

The photo shows the K&M tall (at right) next to a standard boom (left). Camera lens distortion aside, you can see that the standard stand, which is at full height extension, has a forward lean under the weight of the mic. The K&M tall is just a little shy of full height extension, and the vertical pipe is straight. (The tripod base of the K&M is also slightly bigger, and certainly taller by about an inch.) As you can also see, the boom arm is level and there's plenty more height available if the boom were to be angled up. The boom arm is also longer than standard, so you get some extra reach and/or height out of it.

I have bought other K&M products in the past (their "standard" mic' boom and several drum hoop mic' clamps) and I've grown to really appreciate and trust their stuff. Like all of them, the adjustment fittings on these tall booms are easy to turn and VERY secure.
I highly recommend this!

If a mic stand can actually be cool, this one is.

By Howard Walters from Amherst, NY on August 25, 2020

Upon its arrival, the first thing I noticed was the weight. While hefting the box, I asked myself, "Did you buy two instead of just one?" After opening the box, I realized why this stand weighs (12.8 lbs) so much more than any mic boom stand I've ever dealt with: The tripod tubing is massive compared to other stands. Everything seems beefier than other stands I've experienced. Even the mic cable clips are twice as massive as I'm used to. I attached the boom to the base and locked it into a 90 degree angle at its most lengthy ability. I pulled down on the end where a mic would thread onto and the boom. The clutch never slipped and there's no tipping it over. A very well made product.
Be aware: this is taller than your run of the mill mic stand and it has an extra large footprint.

Excellent mic stands

By Sweetwater Customer from Los Angeles on August 12, 2020

Well made and perfect for overheads, can easily handle heavy mics.

I couldn't be happier

By Chad Prewett from Aurora, CO on July 15, 2020

This review is for the extra tall boom stand, which I've had a chance to use a few times now. I have to say that I'm very happy with this heavy-duty stand. It is HEAVY! Not just a little heavy, but seriously weighted. So there are no worries about it tipping over even when it's extended to its max height. Speaking of its height, the extra tall stand is just that: extra tall. Perfect for overhead mics on a drum kit, even if you're using a coincident pair like X/Y with 2 mics on one stand.

The clutch is strong and even when fully extended (both base and boom), I haven't noticed any sag. The boom arm stays exactly where I put it. This stand will definitely last me many years of trusty service, I can highly recommend it.

Well worth it

K&M stands are just that much better. We've all experienced overhead mic stands that flop about, that get out of position when a wayward breeze blows through the studio, even when you look at it funny. Not happening with K&M. I use them for my (large prog) synthesizer rig stands, and the difference is just as obvious with drum mic stands.

K&M Tall Boom Mic Stand

I have several aluminum Mic stands in our studio and I am up grading my mic stands for my drum kit. It"s time because these stands are made of steel and weighted and will stay where they are positioned.

Great Boom Stand!

By Bruce from Irvine CA on July 29, 2019 Music Background: Voice over and on-camera actor

If you're looking for a tall, heavy duty boom stand, this is a great one. I'm using it in my home studio to record dialog for self-taped acting auditions.

I'm recording with a Rode NTG-2 shotgun mic which I put on a SM4-R shock mount attached to the boom pole of the stand. The boom pole allows me to position the mic just out of camera range whether I'm sitting or standing. The mic stand base is really heavy, so even with the boom pole extended, I'm not worried about the stand tipping over.

For those interested, I'm running an XLR cable from the mic into a Zoom H5 recorder. The H5 acts as my audio interface and provides phantom power to the mic. I have a short stereo aux cable (3.5 mm male connectors on each end) running from the line out on my H5 to the mic input on my Canon Vixia HF R80 (this camera is the low end of camcorders having a mic input at a reasonable cost for audition self-tapes).

I set the audio level on the camcorder to manual (do not leave it on auto). and have the audio gain set really low around 15 dB, as the camera pre-amp is not great. I turned up the gain to about 6 or 7 (out of 10) on the H5, which has a much better pre-amp. I also have the H5 line out set at -15 dB, so as not to overpower the mic input on the camcorder.

I run both the camera and H5 off battery power so as not to introduce A/C line noise into the recording. When plugged in, the A/C electric field can create a buzz in the recording. Most people don't like this.

Hope this helps someone wanting do something similar. I've tried to share the benefit of a lot of online research and phone calls with the manufacturers to gather this intel. The net result is I'm getting high def video and really good audio now for my self-tapes.

Great stand

Bought stand as a drummer. Works great for vocals or as overhead microphone stand. Well worth the money you pay.

Overhead Boom Mic Stand

By Jerry Williams from Ohio West Central on July 4, 2019 Music Background: Percussionist 60 yrs.

This mic stand is worth spending the extra money for. You don"t have to worry about anything loosing up and having a overhead mic crashing on your Cymbals. This stand is great.

Simply the best!

By Don from Pittsburgh, PA on April 21, 2019 Music Background: Semi-Pro

Don't waste your money on cheap stands. I have had a K&M boom stand for many many years and they hold up. German quality. I highly recommend these stands.

Perfect Drummer Mic Stand

By Sweetwater Customer on January 10, 2019

Quality stand that has the weight to support an extended boom/mic for singing drummers. I use a Shure Beta 56A with a heavy duty gooseneck to position the mic so there are no access issues to my kit (not a headset fan). Sweetwater rated the 56A as one of the top mics for singing drummers and Mike convinced me to buy a quality Mogami Stage Gold mic cable that will stand up to gigging (I take care of my own equipment, so I know it will be ready to go at game time). Due to the height and length of the mic stand, I would recommend buying the 30" mic cable for bigger rooms.

Solid Stand

By Don Gilkinson from New York on June 20, 2018 Music Background: Studio, Live sound, Guitar, Vocals

This stand is every well made and holds it's position even when extended. When I put a couple of thousand dollars in SDC's on a stand I need to know the stand won't fail. This stand is SOLID period. Thanks again, to Mike Conyers for all of his help over the years. I deal with Sweetwater, because they are SOLID too.

Amazing

By Jordy from Coloma Mi on January 9, 2018 Music Background: Drums and guitar since year 2000

I have 2 of these to for my overheads. These stands are no joke. The quality is outstanding. These will reach 10 ft easy (if you ever need). Bottom tripod is nice and heavy giving me confidence they aren't going anywhere very easily. Worth the money? Definitely!

Amazing

By Sweetwater Customer on January 4, 2018

The greatest stands I've ever known.

A well very well made mic stand at a good price

By Charles Rothgeb from VA on April 6, 2017 Music Background: Church sound director

I purchased the K&M Extra Tall Boom Microphone Stand to reach the male singers in the back of my church choir. It is indeed tall, has quite a reach, and perfectly suits my needs. It is sturdily made and an excellent value---I spent much more for the long-reach carbon fish pole stand which I place in front of the choir (where the women sing). The K&M stand isn't as "elegant" as the fish pole stand, but I was looking for functionality more than appearance. The K&M is attractive in a rugged sort of way---bold, black semi-gloss well-wrought piping, which works for the men. I would not hesitate to purchase another K&M stand if the need should arise.

Awesome sauce!

By Sweetwater Customer on June 10, 2016

Fantastic stand - goes very high - very sturdy - not in the least bit tippy - short of one of the ridiculous costing beasts you'd see in a high-end studio, this is probably as good as it gets for overheads, which is what I use it for.

Great!

By Chuck from Georgia on March 11, 2016 Music Background: Performer, Studio Guy

Really surprised that a tripod boom can be this heavy & sturdy. I will be buying more K&M stands for my studio and live work. I also have their other sizes, and will probably never buy a cheap mic stand again. Great quality!

K&M 21021 Overhead Microphone stand

By Steve Shields on February 6, 2016

This stand is extra heavy, but built with solid German engineering. It is much less likely to tip over with heavy microphones than the more-common, lighter stands. Its extra height allows me to get my microphones that much higher.

Time tested!

By Jason from Wilderness of Minnesota on February 12, 2014 Music Background: Professional Working Musician

I've had this stand for about 13 years and i use it a lot. I want my mics to be secure and stay in place, this does it. This stand is so sturdy that I actually use a K&M clamp boom on it, as well as the super heavy duty long arm that it comes with, and it holds 2 heavy(expensive...) mics at once for daily demo work. Small price for piece of mind!

Solid!!!!

By Gregg T. from Elko, NV on January 7, 2012 Music Background: Recording Engineer

Chris L. of Sweetwater turned me on to this brand of mic stand, and WOW. It is solid and perfect for that heavy condenser mic. This stand has some reach too! I have used a lot of stands in my days and let me tell you, you won't go wrong!
Thanks Chris!!! You Rock!!!

Perfect for drummer boom vocal mike stand

By Sweetwater Customer on July 14, 2018

Heavy duty, sturdy, heavy weight, quality construction. I wish I had been buying this brand/ line before (usually always bought the cheapies that can"t handle much road use)

Best Mic Stand I Have

By John M. from Los Angeles, CA on March 10, 2018

This mic stand is heavy duty and it does not fall when I attach my WA87 on it. Previously I was using a DR Pro mic stand, which kept falling because the WA87 was too heavy for it. I don"t have to worry about that any longer. I"m only going to buy K & M now. The only thing I wish for this mic is that the boom portion of the stand was more collapsible, but other than that I would definitely buy this again.

Mic Stands

By Larry from Kansas City, MO USA on May 28, 2013 Music Background: Professional pianist, past recording studio owner, currently hobbyist.

Purchased the stands to complement heavier overhead choir mics. I am impressed with durability so far - using them for just a month or two - they are well made, very heavy, no tipping even at full extension. They have nice height. More expensive than some so will see how things goes with these more premium quality stands.

Extra tall and extra secure

By Steve Shields from San Diego, CA USA on March 15, 2012 Music Background: Hobbyist

This microphone stand is definitely more substantial than the "On Stage" stands I've been using for a while. The German engineering is obvious; the stand is heavy but gives confidence that your microphone is not going to come down until you take it down. All in all an excellent stand.

K & M Extra Tall Stand

Solid piece of equipment. Added 40 lbs to my mike stand box!

Nice heavy duty mic stand

By Richard from United States on March 15, 2013 Music Background: recording engineer, broadcast engineer, semi pro musician

Nice heavy duty mic stand with extra wide heavy tripod base. Using for a pair SDC on a stereo bar for overhead and its very stable. My first K&M stand but won't be my last very well built.
