Happily compressed

By Sam from Nashville
Music Background: 40+ years making a living in the music business as a songwriter, musician, producer and touring artist/sideman.

Not just "good for the money", this is a really good no-nonsense pedal. I haven't found much use for the bright switch but not knocking it. Super sturdy build. A $ well spent as far as I'm concerned.

Compression For Everyone

By Colin from Ontario, Canada
Music Background: 40 + years playing in bands and open mi nights. Just a hobbyist.

I have one compression pedal, an inexpensive Behringer CS400 to let me learn how to use such a device properly. The CS400 is a nice pedal, but not durable, it was time to find a reasonably priced replacement. I tried several Compression pedals and the JHS Series 3 Compressor won the battle. Three knobs, volume attack sustain, and a toggle for brightness. Now that toggle switch is the key. Compressor pedals have a tendancy to darken the tone a little bit. The JHS gives you the option to brighten the signal or keep it au natural. This is very handy. The knobs easily tweak the compression parameters to suit your taste and playing style. As Josh says :It is a compressor. It compresses." I will add it does the job very well. I have four JHS Series 3 pedals now. The Delay, Overdrive, and Screamer are the others. I'm a huge fan of this pedal line. Well done Josh Scott and your team. You have made this guitar player happy at least.

Great Compressor for the Price!

Perfect Value

By Matthew from Chicago, Il

This compressor is exactly what I was looking for at exactly the right price range. Works as expected and the bright switch is a little something more than a basic compressor. Also feels very durable and well made for the price.

JHS 3 series compressor

By Chris B.
Music Background: I like to play!!!

Good compressor overall. The bright switch is nice but a variable pot would be much better as it makes the pedal go from dark to very bright. Going to stick with my old boss 12v cs-3 which is perfect, even my Behringer cs-400 works very well.

Never ending Pedal board......

By Ed F. from Lafayette, In.

Very well made, functional, and affordable. The JHS 3 series pedals should show up on more boards in the future.

I Love This Series

By Dan D. from The Midwest
Music Background: Garage Rocker

I'm using this after the Q-tron & dirt pedals to smooth out the wrinkles. It's easy for me to dial in a great sound & it doesn't add a lot of noise. They probably could have successfully sold this for $199.

Great pedal

By Joshua E. from BLOOMINGTON, IN

Bought this as a test to see if I liked compression and possibly upgrade to a better compression pedal if I did. I like it And no need to upgrade. JHS knocked this out of the park, sounds fantastic and the controls are super simple. I set it at the front of my signal chain and all my pedals just have that extra punch and sustain. You really can't go wrong with this pedal. The build quality is excellent. If you want to check out compression without breaking the bank this is a great place to start

A versatile, high quality pedal for the price

By Rodney G.

This one does it all. From subtle compression with a slow attack to full on squish. Sustain for days? Check. The bright switch a great feature that should be standard on all compressors. Definitely worth your money.

A Great Entry Into Compression!

By Brian B. from MI
Music Background: 40+ years of playing for personal enjoyment :-)

I've been thinking about adding a compression pedal to my rig for ages. As I've been working to reconfigure and expand my pedalboard, I decided it was time to pull the trigger. I've done my fair share of homework and can't tell you how many times I've almost just grabbed a classic Dynacomp. Then I watched Josh Scott's video on his Series 3 Compression Pedal. I was impressed by the simplicity and versatility of the pedal for my first foray into compression and, of course, the price point! The pedal has not disappointed. It's a simple design and its 3-knob function has allowed me to immediately and easily experiment with compression in my signal chain. And, I've already dialed in a few ways to utilize the pedal to my delight. I highly recommend this pedal for those new to compression, and I can only guess it's punching well above its weight for the price when compared to pedals costing 3x as much coin! Been thinking about a compression pedal? Grap one of these while they last!

Great introduction to compression

By Nicholas G. from Seattle, Washington
Music Background: 20 years rock, punk, metal, hardcore, worship, recording

I've been playing guitar for 20 years and have never owned a compressor pedal all this time. I figured the JHS 3 Series would be a good low-cost way to understand what compression does; then I could decide later if I wanted to upgrade to a more deluxe-style pedal with more features. (A mix knob, etc.)

Just 3 simple knobs: Level, Attack, and Sustain. The pedal does exactly what it's supposed to do. I can feel how compression raises the volume of single note lines and squashes the volume of chords. Having messed around with compressor plug-ins in recording software, I am curious about the range of attack time available in this pedal, which isn't given. 1:30 on the Attack knob is the sweet spot for me.

The Bright switch is the component that makes this pedal unique. It provides a very noticeable treble boost to the "clack" of single-coil and Alnico humbucker (think Duncan '59) style pickups. Not so much for ceramic humbuckers, which are already typically bright. Both switch-up and switch-down settings are useful depending on the musical context.

I am primarily a high-gain player, so this compressor is opening up new avenues to explore with medium-gain and clean settings. Fingerpicking is new to me, and I'm enjoying it more with each time I sit down to play (with compression).

For you metal shredder types who like to drive the front end of a high-gain head with an overdrive pedal for leads, maybe try this compressor with the Bright switch up. It could give you the edge you need! Please note, you WILL introduce a lot of noise and hiss if you do this. You need a noise gate, but you know that already.

Boutique build quality... JHS have knocked it out of the park!

This gave me the sound.

By Astronomer B. from DE

It's amazing how sometimes one little thing can change so much. Playing with compression changes how my instrument feels. And honestly, most compression pedals do the job but the bright switch on this is very nice. I do not own a Vox amp but I had a compressed AC30 sound in my head and I was able to get that sound with this pedal. Lots of volume on his pedal as well. One drawback is that a power supply is needed as it will not take batteries. Well, I cant see where one goes anyway. I like this pedal and so will you. Promise.

DON'T LET ITS SIMPLE APPEARANCE FOOL YOU!

By David P. from Greater Kansas City Area
Music Background: Degree in pipe organ; producer of multitrack "one-man band" recordings; player of keyboards, guitar, autoharp, bass, mountain dulcimer, and pedal steel; performer of 50s/60s country and rock music, gospel and classical music.

Some folk might want to pass over this little pedal because of its small three-knob construction; but there is more flexibility in that box than you might think based only on its appearance. Its Volume Knob lets you match the volume with the compressor in to that with the compressor off (bypassed) so that the signal sent to the amp is pretty much the same. The "real fun" comes in when you begin to play with the Attack and Sustain knobs! If you have studied this type of device, you probably know that the "sustain" is actually an effect produced by compression: It knocs the signal level down when a string or chord is first plucked; then as the vibration from the guitar decays, the signal level is boosted to compensate for the lower signal level coming from the guitar, giving the "sustain effect" despite the decay of the guitar's output signal. I mention this point in order to state one consequence of this setup, particularly if you get too "carried away" with that Sustain Knob: As the pedal boosts its output level, it will also bring up the hum level. That hum might give a "pumping effect" when it builds up then suddenly "goes away" when you strike a chord. I think I could safely say that this pedal and other similar devices is somewhat similar to the old "automatic volume control" found on those old cassette recorders; but I have found that wise use of the Attack and Sustain Knobs along with general techniques to lower the hum level in your rig can manage the hum situation quite well so that the "good" in this pedal far outweighs the "bad."

It will take a good bit of practice to "mine" the ways this pedal can enhance your guitar's sound. While I haven't used this pedal very long, I know that it can be adjusted to fit a variety of playing styles and types of music - from subtle compression/sustain all the way to something which really punches down the sound - it's all in the knobs!

To make this package even greater, it has a "bright" switch that really boosts the higher-frequency components of your guitar's tone. Believe me, you'll KNOW IT when you flip that switch while you have your guitar set in the treble tone settings!

Now for the reason I gave this very neat pedal an "8" rather than a "9": The very close spacing of the three knobs makes it easy for me to accidentally brush against one knob when changing another one. This problem has happened to me particularly when wanting to change the Attack Knob but also inadvertently changing the Volume Knob's setting. In my opinion, this unwanted control change is made more likely because the knobs on this pedal (at least on the unit I received) are so easy to turn. That situation could, of course, be a "double-edged sword" in the hands of some musicians who like to be able to make swift changes in the settings on the fly; but a player under a high level of excitement could accidentally "knock off" his sound by bumping the Volume Knob all or nearly all the way down. I, being somewhat of mechanical bent, have considered a minor "low-tech" help for this problem: It occurs to me that if the Volume Knob could be temporarily removed and a thin washer made of felt or other fiber could be slipped on the shaft before replacement of the knob, that fiber would add just enough friction to make it less likely to inadvertently change the Volume Knob. While I am considering such a minor modification, I must in all fairness say that I am totally blind, making it more likely that I would bump the Volume Knob when trying to quickly adjust the Attack Knob. Still, a person with large fingers might encounter this difficulty and seek a way to improve the situation. If I were contacting someone at the factory in Kansas City, though, I would suggest that it would be nice if the knobs required just a bit more effort to turn.

In conclusion, I maintain that JHS has a "good thing going" in these pedals because of their attractive price, small size, and, at least in the Compressor Pedal, a lot of flexibility in a simple box. This pedal is simple for a beginner going into cimpressor/sustain pedals, but it should well serve a more advanced musician who takes time to learn more about the pedal's use. In all the pedals about which I have read so far, this JHS Compressor is a "best buy" for the price compared to what you get in the package. By the way, you have to provide the power supply for the pedal; it has no provision for battery operation. In short, I recommend that any musician wanting a good package of this type BUY THIS PEDAL! You'll have fun with it, and it will add some nice "shaping" to your guitar's signal.

Very versatile compressor

By Ed from Albany, NY

This compressor from JHS just might be a "make good-er-r." Especially if you want a humbucker to sound more like a single coil when using compression. It has a lot of volume on tap as well, but it's worth taking a look because of the bright switch alone. With it on, pick attack is all there. It'll brighten up a dark pickup or amp.
With the attack all the way up, you don't lose the jangle with rhythm playing. It takes a bit for it to kick in, so pick dynamics stay the same.
Perfect for CCR. I've been playing "Run Through the Jungle" for an hour
