ISP Technologies Hum Extractor + Decimator G Noise Reduction System Reviews

2-channel Noise Reduction Pedal with Hum Extraction, Decimator X Noise Suppression, Separate Threshold Controls, Input Gain/Input Level Meter, and Loop Clip Indicator

No matter how noisy your guitar rig is, the ISP Technologies Hum Extractor pedal will make it whisper-quiet. Like ISP’s Decimator G-String models, the Hum Extractor tracks directly from your guitar’s signal — no more cut off notes when you switch from high-gain to clean tones. And every parameter of this pedal is customizable, enabling you to tailor it to your rig and application while guaranteeing transparent results. The Hum Extractor is ISP Technologies’ ultimate noise reduction pedal. And given ISP’s track record of success on that front, that’s saying a lot! If you want to add a pro-level noise suppression system to your guitar rig, the Hum Extractor gets our top recommendation.

100% worth it

By Sam Cook-Stuntz from SEATTLE, WA on December 8, 2022

Absolute lifesaver for tracking electric guitars. It takes a little experimentation to find the sweet spot between the noise floor and the sustain of the guitar, but once it's dialed in, this is the most transparent noise gate I've ever used by a mile.

Worth every penny and more. 60 cycle hum completely gone.

By Daniel Rogers from WNC on December 1, 2022

My church has terrible 60 cycle hum. With my single coil guitars, the hum is the same volume level as my guitar signal. So they are pretty much unusable. Normal noise gates won't help, because once I start to play the 60 cycle hum is still with my signal.

With this device, I have no 60 cycle hum and there is no effect on the tone of the guitar. I can freely use any position on my guitar without have to be stuck in a hum cancelling position. I don't know how its accomplished but its an amazing job of engineering by ISP.

I understand no one wants to spend this much on a noise gate, but it works with really no drawbacks. The cost and footprint size are all worth it considering I can play all my single coil guitars, focus on my playing, and never have to worry about hum or an angry soundman again.

This is the real deal, Sweetwater and ISP

By Eddie Lykins from Oklahoma City, OK on October 26, 2022 Music Background: 30 plus years of playing guitar, playing in bands, and now.....I do it for the best reason. Me.

Okay, this will be a little long and I apologize for that. (Not really) I had noise issues, not major, sound killing, wife is going to leave me, and the dog howls every time I play bad. Worse. This was the kind that won't let you record. That won't let you just play in peace. 60hz, 180hz hum and harmonics that carry over in the reverb tail and hold my old gate open too long. The kind that you hear "in between the notes" under articulate high gain. It makes good, beefy, heavy tube distortion sound like a layer of buzzy plastic is laying over your speakers...right up until the gate finally shuts and then it feels like a relief. So thought I would try this. The ISP Hum Extractor + Decimator G. Now this is where it gets good, like really good. 2 minutes. That is how long I had to experience the pure joy this box provides. I tried to set the gain and poof...... noisy as can be. I didn't even hesitate. I texted Dave Hoffman, my sales engineer and he responded in just a few minutes. We chatted, I recorded a sound clip and emailed it. Tech support called me the next day, called it a factory fault and 4 days after I received the first one the replacement arrived. That easy. That quick. This is the even better part. I'm amazed. My guitar rig is utterly and totally silent. Zero noise, zero hum, zero buzz. It is so quiet that I have re EQ'd it because that high frequency buzz and hum is no longer there. I am still playing with the downward expander and filter tracking settings and just gets better and better. Yes, it's pricey but so, so worth it. I play through a EVH 5150 iii and this noise gate (it seems rude to limit it at that) makes every channel meaningful at any gain setting. No hiss, no hum, no buzz, and I can play with proximity feedback as well. The reverb tail is smooth and clear until the note naturally decays. This box is so worth it. And as for Sweetwater, Dave Hoffman in sales, and Marc Gegner in tech support? You are priceless thank you and have my business from now on. If you want to eliminate noise, buy this box.

ISP Hum Ex No Noise

By TJ from Castle Rock, CO on September 8, 2022 Music Background: Hobbyist since the '80s

I own a Soldano 30 and also have the ISP decimator g string II pedal. The g string II is good but does not eliminate all the noise that my Soldano produces. However the ISP Hum Extractor gets rid of the entire noisy spectrum. Just follow the instructions to a T and ISP will work it's wonders!

Single Coils, P90s, Humbuckers… Doesn’t matter, BUY THIS!

By Daniel Lazaris from Tacoma, WA on February 20, 2022

For decades guitarists have been fighting with EMI and amp noise, for decades guitarists have been trying to find noise suppressors
and gates that didn't eat the end of sustained notes.

60hz hum, 50hz hum, bad lighting, bad wiring, your guitar isn't shielded? This thing doesn't care. I cannot believe how quiet my rig is with every single guitar in my collection.

No hum, no gain hiss. I can't tell a difference at all in my tone with it on and whatever magical algorithm they've come up with leaves even my long sustained notes with the volume and tone rolled off completely intact.

This is worth every single penny and I would recommend it to any guitarist.

The best ever..my second one

The best noise gate ever..just get one

Really Impressed!

By Robert Schieder from Missoula MT on August 24, 2021

There were NONE of the other noise gates and hum eliminators that satisfied me. But this one really impressed me. ISP really did an excellent job on this one. I will be honest, I thought it was too expensive until I actually used it. Now I totally feel it was worth it, because it surpassed my high and critical expectations.

ISP Hum Extractor + Decimator

By Sweetwater Customer on August 12, 2021

This pedal works great. Especially when your ready to record & you have a huge buzzing in the background from your stack. Click it on & all is quiet. Thank you ISP. Thank you Ryan @sweetwater for hooking me up.

Silence is beautiful

By George Lorch from PAYSON, AZ on June 8, 2021 Music Background: 35 year hobbyist

I had an old cheapie gate from the early 90's that I never used because I could never get the gate settings just right for that fast open and soft close at the right time. It also seemed to even introduce some kind of washy noise itself into the signal. I will leave the brand name out but I'm sure many of you can guess. Anyway, no matter how bad my noise was I just accepted it. Most of the time this was not a problem for me as I was playing through humbuckers and in a fairly noiseless environment. So recently I moved my play/practice from the living room couch down to a more structured, permanent, and closed area. This area also happens to be shared with my home office (imagine 3 or 4 computers/laptopps, monitors, old LDC television, etc...). This place was a noise echo chamber that even now appeared on humbuckers. I also recently bought an AMAZING Fender American Pro II Strat with the help of my sales rep Austin. The new "noiseless" V-Mod II pickups in the Strat are definitely a big improvement over previous generations but were just no match for my new practice area.

Cue the ISP. Total, absolute silence. Response is immediate, no noticeable harm to attack whatsoever and perfect sustain and soft close. There is no doubt that this is an expensive piece for what is not always an obvious need, silence, but it works and it works VERY well. Certainly I probably could have solved 80-90% of my noise problems with a cheaper unit and maybe the same signal quality, but the tools this offers to silence even the most demanding noise problems made it worth the investment for me.

One note for anyone looking to pick this up and run it on a board with a common power supply, it requires ~800 milliamps. Most power bricks do not offer that much juice on a single isolated output. It does come with its own 2A wall wart. I am not at all complaining about this, just letting you know as it is one thing that I overlooked when researching.

Rock on!

Amazing customer experience!

By Patrick Sullivan from Old Hickory, TN on May 20, 2021

I purchased one of these in May of 2021 due to some very vexing noise issues with my recording rig. When I first hooked it up there was still one noise element that I couldn't seem to resolve. I called ISP Technologies directly to see if there was something I was doing wrong. To my extreme surprise, I was on the phone with Buck, the owner of the company and designer of the product within one minute. He spent over 30 minutes on the phone with me analyzing the problem and explaining strategies to mitigate it. When we were done strategizing he asked me to call him back the next day to let him know how it worked out. His suggestions were right on the money.

Never in my life have I had a support experience like this. I am blown away both by the product, and the unbelievable care and attention of Buck at ISP to make sure I got my problem solved.

Solved signal interference from power lines

By Jason H from Pittsburgh, PA on March 17, 2021

I moved to my new house 2 months ago - since then I've had a very bad hum/buzzing on my amps. After spending several hundred dollars on filters, conditioners, and electricians..what ended up causing it was in front of me the whole time (literally). I have a Power Line tower about 40 feet from my house...when I go outside I can audibly hear the power lines humming. My amps are picking this up and there's not much I can do about it from an electrical standpoint. It's manageable with humbuckers, but single coils are pretty much unplayable. Enter the ISP Hum Extractor + Decimator. While a pedal isn't the ideal solution, I am beyond impressed at what this does. I'd say it knocks out about 95% of any noise, and I only hear a faint buzzing when I actually strum the guitar. This is a complete life saver in an otherwise horrible situation.

Beautifully solved my noise issue; this is some serious black magic!

By Sweetwater Customer on December 31, 2020

I moved to a new home and quickly realized that I was having some SEVERE noise issues unlike anything I've ever experienced before. More specifically, in addition to standard 60Hz noise, I'm getting 180Hz noise, and a TON of 540Hz noise. I eventually caught wind of this product and decided to reach out to Buck from ISP to see if this could possibly help me. Buck was incredibly helpful and seemed confident that this product would help, since it it designed to filter out 60Hz noise, as well as noise caused from its higher order harmonics (180Hz, 540Hz, etc.). I decided to try it out and got in touch with my awesome Sweetwater Rep (shoutout to Spencer Pyles!) and patiently waited for the unit to arrive. I am writing this review about an hour after initial testing (Buck was also kind enough to walk me through the setup). Once everything was ready to go, I was absolutely shocked to see that this pedal really did help solve my severe noise issue! It's a two stage process: first a filter deigned to selectively filter out the 60Hz/harmonic noise and leave your guitar signal intact (the Hum Extractor side of the pedal), and then a powerful noise gate to mop up any other gain-related noise. This one-two punch basically eliminated the noise from my rig, and I will readily admit that I was skeptical whether it would work. If you don't believe me, check out the quick video I made (see included link). Even in the worst case scenario for noise (super high gain with single coils), this pedal just eliminates it. I have yet to test it with pedals, but I'm confident it will work perfectly. I believe this pedal has single handedly prevented me from going insane, haha.

Almost perfect for removing noise; Wish there was controls for Release/Decay.

By Sweetwater Customer on May 25, 2023

Had this pedal for 1 year, very great pedal and I would say this is perfect for removing noise in 80% of use cases; I was able to successfully eliminate all of the hum coming from my tube amp.

The problems come when you start cranking treble boosters through distortion: you'll notice that depending on the settings either there is (1) always a little tail of hiss after the initial attack or (2) the high frequencies are completely filtered out. I know one of the strong points of this pedal is suppose to be its simplicity and adaptive release times, but it's really hard to get the decimator threshold knob to a good spot without completely compromising on the high frequencies in these specific use cases.

Just something to keep in mind if you're planning to use this pedal in these situations.
