Zoom G6 Multi-effects Processor Reviews

Guitar Multi-effects Processor with 2-in/2-out USB 2.0 Audio Interface, 6 Stomp Switches, 4.3" Touchscreen, Expression/Volume Pedal, 70 Pre-loaded Cabinet IRs, 50 User IR Slots, 45-second Looper, 68 Rhythm Patterns, Tuner, and FX Loop

The Zoom G6 multi-effects modeling floorboard brings you six custom-crafted amp models and three decades' worth of modulations, drives, delays, and reverbs, in a backpack-friendly floor unit. Amps, stomps, cabs, loops, backing tracks — with the G6, everything you need for a real-world gig setting is right at your feet. There’s plenty of DSP on tap, enabling you to chain up to nine effects along with amplifier emulation. The G6’s 70 preloaded cab IRs are spot on, while 120 user IR slots accommodate your third-party impulse responses. Navigating the G6 is a breeze, thanks to its customizable workflow and smartphone-class 4.3-inch touchscreen. Cycling Modes via the selector switch reassigns each of the four lower switches and their labels to your new workflow. This makes it extremely easy to bounce between looper, user presets, and pedalboard modes. There's even a configurable expression/volume pedal on the right side to give you real-time manipulation of your effects and output. Other player-essential features you'll find in the Zoom G6 include a 45-second looper (expandable via optional SD card), 68 built-in rhythm patterns for solo performances, effects loops for peerless amp and stomp integration, and an integrated 2-in/2-out USB audio interface for direct recording straight into your DAW.

Sounds amazing

By John from Georgia
Music Background: Expert Musician

Bought this based on positive reviews of the sound quality and I was not disappointed. I needed an effects unit that sounds great using only IEM's and this fit the bill. Took it out of the box and connected it into my digital mixer, plugged in my IEM's and WOW! First patch sounded amazing as did do many others. Programming is going to take a significant learning investment, but that is normal for this type of device.

Zoom G6 review

By Elantqavos
Music Background: 3 years playing Guitar

The Zoom G6 is a great pedal board especially for its price, it is way better than expected only down side is I personally didn't find distortion sound I was looking for but it still has some really good effects

Not as Bad as they say

By Sweetwater Customer from KS

I've heard many complaints about the ease of use of the unit. I say they are wrong. After a software update, the Ui is very easy to use. Sounds amazing. Easy to interface with mixers or headphones.

Awesome

By Sweetwater Customer

Been using this for a while, easy to use. I use it mainly as a pedal platform for reverb, delay, compression, chorus but a lot of options to work with. It's a steal at sale price, we'll worth it.

This one wasn't for me

By Lee from SC
Music Background: pro

I've been using Zoom since the 90s so I'm no stranger to their products. I currently use a G5 for live performances and perform every night on the weekends. I got the G6 and was excited about the touch screen but building patches is limited and this one just sounds "cheesy" compared to their other units that I use. The tone is thin and the distortions tend to be fizzy rather than full and tight like what I'm used to getting from them. I played with this unit for nearly a month then decided to send it back because it just doesn't stand up to the task for what I need to get out of it. It has a lot of features I love like the touch screen and the weight but in the end it's all about what it can do for my sound/tone. I did not test the looper much but it worked as it should for what little I did mess with it. One thing I'd like to see Zoom bring back would be the "BOOST" button like on the G5, it's great to have when you need a little extra kick without having to waste a patch just to get it.

Zoom G6

By Robert from Oregon
Music Background: Started guitar at age 10, 53 now and still going at it.

Rad little unit. Easy to use, I don't really use most of what is on it but like having everything in one unit instead of multiple pedals. I would suggest purchasing a SD card with it though, it does not come with one. Plenty of videos online showing how to dial in some tones to get you started if you don't want to use the factory presets, I found one for Van Halen that gets you pretty close that is pretty fun to mess around with my EVH strip series guitar

Shockingly Good

By Peyton D. from Richmond, VA
Music Background: 15 years of performance and recording experience. Guitar/Bass/Keys.

I purchased this on a whim to have a secondary setup for at home rehearsing. My main performance rig is an HX Stomp with some additional MIDI connectivity. Turn outs that I like the Zoom better. Way easier to make changes on the device itself and to my ears the tone is just more "real" after some minimal tweaking. I like the easy footswitch access to change modes as well. This is actually going to be taking the place of the stomp in my live performances for the foreseeable future.

The only reasons I did not give it 5 stars is due to the plastic housing and some slightly awkward menu layouts. The housing feels sturdy but I do have some minor concerns about how well it will "travel" for gigs. Zoom also has not made a case for the unit yet. It appears it may fit in the case they designed for the G5n but I have not been able to confirm this yet. There are some odd menu options on the G6. When you swipe the menu down from the top you have all sorts of edit options but then there is an EDIT ALL menu. Just use that one. The other ones are all superfluous.

Very easy to operate with minimal reading or studying instructions

By James P.
Music Background: Guitar & percussion 30years

I love it. I'm kind of old school with very little experience with gear made aftter 2000. The few processors I have messed with were a nightmare for me. I was worried the zoom G6 might cause some of the the same headaches but, i was absolutely WRONG! It's actually one of the easiest and user friendly processrs I've ever put my hands on. It sounds amazing, its super easy to operate, and I couldn't be happier. Thank you Sweetwater!

Great tool for the pro or the living room player

By BLAIN C. from FORT WORTH, TX

I have never been comfortable using multi effects processors.I always find them clumsy and very sterile sounding. the only processor I ever got much use out of was an old Zoom 505 I had back in th 90s. Gave the G6 a chance and picked up a Boss Katana at the same time and this has turned out to be an excellent combination.
The factor presets are just okay but make a decent base for tweaking out. Couldn't find what I was really lookig for so I started a new bank and new patch from scratch and after tons of experimenting I was able to achieve my primary tone, and get it very close to my tube amp and pedal board. The experimenting gave me the experience to create the other 4 tones I primarily use much faster. I added an SD card to expand the looper and have begun experimenting with it and the rythm patterns and have been impressed with the little time I have spent with it. Fantastic tool for the money. Lots of options, excellent tones (with some time and tweaking) and very easy to use with a short learning curve.

Zoom G6

By Phil from MA

Being new to multi-effects, the G6 was very easy to get comfortable with, and offers seemingly endless combinations of effects/cabs. The interface is very intuitive and easy to use. I also would like to add that their tech support is very responsive. I had a few questions and got answers the next day.

They didn't have an effects list for G6, but the G11 effects list is about 99% applicable. And recently, they provided a very detailed patch memory list for all 100 stock patches, which is also a big help. In addition, I can use an old Roland EV-5 as a second expression pedal.

On the negative side (very minor), the accompanying Guitar Lab software requires a minimum of Windows 8, and the included Cubase LE license needs Windows 10 to run. I'm still on Windows 7, so an upgrade will be needed. Even so, importing loops and/or firmware updates can be accomplished via SD card. Also, there are no plans for an Android port of the iOS Handy Guitar Lab app (now supported in v1.30 firmware). If you're already on Windows 10 or a Mac, you should be all set.

Great box!

By Randy S. from Pelham MA
Music Background: Sickoancestry

I just got this the other day & by the way-Matt at Sweetwater ROCKS!!!!5 stars forhim all the way! He really cares about his customers & we'll always hook anyone up with an issue[as all the staff as far as I can remember] Anyway, the g6 sounds great& pretty icon layout I'm new to [welcome to the the new fx proc generation-right?] It sounds sort of like My g5 I've had for 9 yrs[that's starting to act funny] in some regards, but better & more defined sounds, slightly realistic sounding amps. However I found that as far as I can tell.you are more limited as to which effects you can put in a chain compared to the g5.Also,I havent been able to control more than 4 effects in 'pedal mode'' seeing the manual that comes with it is just a ''quick guide'' they don't mention it,or maybe I should see if there's an online manual to maybe see what I'm missing.I'm so glad I waited to buy this instead of getting the pod go [that only has 4 effects at once] overall,I'm very glad I got this machine-it'll bring your sound to the next level!

An excellent, feature rich effects processor/amp modeler for the price!

By Erik N. from Salt Lake City
Music Background: Location Sound Mixer, Hobbyist Guitarist

This probably one of the better choices out there for an floorboard modeler/processor in the sub $500 range, which I'm happy to see because I was a big fan of Zoom's G3n from 2016 (which was a great unit in its own right, but lacked a few significant features that set it behind the other big contenders on the market like the Mooer, Hotone, or Line 6 products in similar price ranges). But Zoom has finally caught up, and offers features like custom IR loading, integrated audio interfacing over USB, FX loop, much longer (and saveable) looper recordings, additional processing power, and large touchscreen for controlling the unit.

Aside from all that though, my favorite improvement over the older Zoom processor generations is that the G6 just sounds significantly better in terms of effect/amp model fidelity. The amp models in the G3n sounded okay at best, great for bedroom playing or small, local gigs, but suffered from sounding a bit flat and sterile, in my opinion. The amps in the G6 sound better and respond better across the board - not AxeFX or Helix territory, but still very good, and on-par (or better even) with most other modelers in this price range. Overall, I'd describe them as more dynamic and organic, with more realistic distortion and subtle tonal characteristics. The original cab simulations from the G3n are still there, but there's essentially no reason to use them thanks to the whopping 70 included impulse responses, and the ability to add many more of your own. The stock IRs do sound quite good, and I found myself sometimes choosing them instead of some of the OwnHammer IRs I imported, for certain tones.

I should note that nearly all the new features I mentioned about the G6 were also implemented in the Zoom G11, which was released in May 2020. However, I really thing the G11 was mostly a failure in product design, and I think the recent (significant) price drop for the G11, and the existence of the G6 itself, is evidence for the poor market performance of the G11. The G6 is far more practical, both in form factor and price, and is a far better ambassador for all these new features Zoom wants to show of. I think 90% of customers will probably opt for the G6 instead now that it's available.

I also really liked how the touchscreen interface was implemented. It's not quite as responsive as I'd like (compared to like a smartphone or tablet), but its certainly very useable and I was able to do basically everything I wanted to with the G6 without having to pull out the manual, which is the mark of good UI design. The bank/patch organization is much better and more sensible than that of the G3n. The Zoom Guitar Lab software is also really well implemented with the G6, and I found it effortless to customize patches/banks and import IRs. I haven't messed with using the G6 as an audio interface much yet, but with what I have tried, I found it pretty simple to set up. Super great feature that I think all processors should have, no matter what price point, and I'm very glad Zoom has finally implemented it.

There aren't too many negative aspects of the G6 that I can think of, but I'll mention that while the unit doesn't feel cheap by any means, it is relatively light. It seems to be a similar weight to the G3n, but spread across a larger space, so the unit is a bit less dense and more likely to shift around the floor. For people interested in using the G6 in live situations, this would be something to keep in mind. For bedroom playing, not an issue at all. I also kind of wish the expression WASN'T included, because its just not something I use a lot in my playing, and it would be nice if it was an optional feature for people who may want something more compact. I did also hope that Zoom would have added a few more new effects and amps, since the list of effects is only marginally larger than what was available on the G3n. They did add 5 more amps (6 if you never got the Krampus update on the G3n) which are very good I will say, but I guess you always just want a little more haha. But like I mentioned before, the sound quality has been improved across the board, so the lack of new effects isn't a huge deal for me. Also, Zoom is known for pushing out new features through firmware upgrades over their products' lifetimes, so we may see some new effects and amps yet.

Overall, just a great piece of gear, especially for the price, and I've been having a blast just exploring all the new features and improvements. Anything that makes playing guitar more fun is a good product in my opinion.
