I like The Flashback II x X4, just don't love it.

By EO from Phoeninx
Music Background: semi-professional

My only real gripe is that it doesn't work off my VooDoo Labs Pedal Power 2 like my older Alter Ego X4 does. The original Flashback X4 is no longer available and for what I'm using this pedal for, the added features on this pedal aren't important to me. If you use an insufficient PSU, you may encounter the same issue I did, where only the effected signal came through my amp - the original signal did not. I spent too much time trying to figure that out and the Music Tribe (TC Electronic) website is horrible - no customer support at all. Lucky for my, my Sweetwater sales engineer provided assistance. Needless to say, I have to use the included PSU and my VooDoo Labs Pedal Power 2 for all my other pedals on the board.

No Support!!!!!! Well, Very Little Support

By JACK L. from Orlando
Music Background: Multi instrumentalist

I am a delay nut, have way too many for any sane person. Of course, being a delay nut a flashback definitely must be in the arsenal, and I have two. The x2 and the x4. I actually use the x2 more than its much bigger brother for several reasons. Footprint, ease of use, and very similar feature set. But more than that, my unit arrived with a broken delay mode knob. It just spun on its shaft. No set screw, just a very weak tab injection molded into the shaft recess. The tab was broken, thus making the knob ineffective. The seller recommended I call TC Electronic and ask for a replacement knob. Come to find out accessing support for TC Electronic is a royal pain in the ____, given TC Electronic is part of a much larger conglomerate. After many tickets and much back and forth, TC Electronic will not just send a knob. I must order one. And not from them. From a third party who by their own accounts, have no idea if the knob they will order in my behalf is the right one. And the knob is pretty hard (impossible so far) to find. Most knobs of this type employ a set screw, and that set screw does not align properly with the shaft flat / mode markings. This has really become a sore issue with me, obviously. I have a ton of TC Electronic equipment, but this may well be my last....

Amazing Flexibility

By D J. from Bloomington, IN
Music Background: Pro audio engineer and guitar player

I absolutely love this pedal. I love it so much I returned it...and bought a Plethora X5 so I could have as many of them as I needed. The Toneprint software is amazing if you are an advanced used and are really looking to develop you own particular sound. Pretty much any idea of digital, analog, saturation, feedback character, etc. you can dream of, this pedal can do it...and you can stack them for amazing ambient swells. The only thing you can't do is cross the L/R paths with a panning control. This would be useful to recreate things like the Andy Timmons HALO pedal, but that one is amazing as well if you need that one thing. The FB pedals are amazing for the money, and amazing regardless of the money. High headroom, clean, but dirty if you need that too. No regrets on this one, and I return most pedals as they dissapoint my sound design needs.

Awesome stereo

By Ricky M. from CA
Music Background: Guitar 30 years

Started running a stereo guitar rig a few years ago. Don't think I can ever go back to running a mono amplifier. This delay pedal does it all for a great price. Really enjoying the super rich tone coming out of two amplifiers. I have the small version on my pedal board that I use to play with my band. So I thought I would buy this big one to have at the house where I have plenty of room and this one did not disappoint. It has a looper and all the delay settings you could ever want The knobs are big and it sounds fantastic. For what you're getting the price is amazing. I'm sure The Starlight is a better sounding unit but for the money I am really loving this thing in stereo. I run my guitar through the ToneX pedal and then into this and then out to two amplifiers. Talk about lush delay this is it! I could go on and on for the price and the sound this thing can't be beat! Thanks Will this thing is awesome and such a great price from Sweetwater You got to love it!!!

Excellent value and just overall great pedal!

By Daniel from Arizona

This thing is awesome! I had a boss delay, but I switched to this for the sole reason of being able to bank presets. It does that perfectly, but I'm also impressed with everything else about this! The delay types sound great, it's easy to set specific subdivisions and the tap tempo built in… it's just great! And also… You get a looper, it's basic, but works great! Honestly I think it's hard to beat the value of this pedal!

Perfect for the price

By Michael M. from Germantown, TN

I bought for the tape and analog delays and presets. It nails that, and is simple to use. The more sophisticated ones with screens, etc. are overwhelming to me on a pedal board. This lets me just tweak knobs and hold buttons.

The construction is plenty sturdy for the price. The foot switches are the only thing I may be concerned about if I put it through years of abuse, but again, the price.

I did not expect to enjoy the looper as much as I do. I've played a lot with making harmonies with it.

It's been super flexible, a ton of fun, and inspirational for me to wander into sounds beyond what I expected.

Flashback 2x4 has many critical issues

By Joe from Austin, TX

As long as you set on one foot switch and one type of effects it's ok pedal for the price. Mufti-function switch does some weird stuff when switching from footswitch B to A to C and vice versa. You don't get your consistent delay settings back when switching from one foot switch to another. Tap tempo suddenly changes without you ever touching it. No firmware updates of any kind available. I bought this unit in place of my broken Timefactor but I should have bought sometime else instead. I don't recommend Flashback 2x4.

Easily the BEST Delay I have ever owned, held back by a profoundly subpar software...

By Jarrod W. from Plano, TX
Music Background: 15+ years of chruch, open mic-nights, self-recording, gigging, jamming, and gear hunting

The TC Electronic Flashback 2 X4 Delay and Looper is hands-down easily the BEST delay I have ever owned, but it is held back by a profoundly subpar software, aka TonePrint.

For a while I was rocking a Walrus Audio ARP-87 delay. Excellent choice, but I wanted a delay pedal with presets as I find myself wanting to utilize a fairly wide tonal pallet of delay sounds with different types of style, note subdivision, and feedback/levels. So I upgraded from the ARP-87 to the Mako D1 Delay, as the 5 different delay types (especially reverse and dual delay) and 9 save slot presets won me over. However, the D1 is unfortunately a tone suck... its digital only, with no analog dry through. It very noticeable changes your core tone signal with it engaged. While I LOVED the dual and reverse delays on the D1, I sold it and took a chance on the Flashback 2 X4

Oh man, am I glad I made that jump. I will never look back. I have been paired with (in my opinion) one of THE best delay pedal options on the market right now. While the size of this pedal is pretty beefy (make sure you have enough pedalboard real estate for it), it is absolutely worth it in features and construction. 2290 Digital Delay, Analog Delay, Tape Delay, Lofi Delay, Reverse Delay, 6 toneprint slots, and the ability to have dual delay on any of the featured delay types. Absolutely KILLER. Very simple control layout - subdivision, delay time knob, feedback (repeats) knob, and the level knob is how much wet sound is blended into your (always unity) dry signal. Ingenious.

Now, Here is where I dock a star - Toneprint. The software feels DOA. Bugs prevent it from functioning how it should, half the time the software doesnt recognize my pedals connected to it, and the tutorials do not adequately teach you how to use the software imho. I think its pretty disappointing and inexcusable that TC Electronic boasts the Toneprint software as a core feature for many of their main pedals now, yet this is the support it gets. Very disappointing.

However, in all honesty you could wipe the 6 toneprint slots and all its editing power off this pedal, and the face value alone places it leagues above what other delay pedals are offering right now, ESPECIALLY in its price range.

If you are desiring a delay pedal that has save presets and is a "set and go" meat and potatoes pedal, the Flashback 2 X4 is for you!

Tone tweaker and live player delight OR looper

By Eliezer R. from Berrien Springs, MI

Having 6 preset slots was a huge ease of use for live playing. Granted, this doesn't hold true if you want to tweak things live. (Maybe it does, but that isn't my use case). The tap tempo was a must and it doubled as a bank switch so that was cool.
Tone tweaking is highly recommended if this is in your sights. However, keep in mind you'll want to connect to your computer to go this. I love getting to change how the delay engine behaves, the tone print presets are a'ight, but i really like starting from scratch or modifying an existing template. The knobs can be reassigned and the gain curve can be changed, or even reversed! And that's handy. I like assigning multiple actions/parameters to a single knob. I like making certain settings kick in at only certain parts of the knob range. It's just a ton of fun, very VERY flexible

Also.

This is a looper. It is a very handy looper with dedicated foot switches for record/dub, start/stop, play loop once through, and undo/clear. No double tapping dance required!
However. And this became a bigger deal the more i used it: it cannot do delay while looping. I would give it 2 stars if it weren't for the fact that the pedal rocks. I just wish the delay would continue through the looping. It's a shame that an otherwise PERFECT pedal had such a crippling limitation.
You either get a live playing delay delight, OR you get a simple but very handy looper.

Keep that in mind

Save your money and buy the Flashback X2

By Brett B. from Richland, WA

After owning an X2 and loving it I figured Id go big with this one. More of a good thing, right? Wrong. This pedal is a mess. It just makes the whole "ease of use" more unnecessarily complicated and convoluted. I sold this after two months and just went back to the amazing X2 and don't feel like I'm missing a thing. The two best words to describe this pedal are "Underwhelming" and "Annoying".

Almost....

By Darshan M. from Cincinnati OH
Music Background: Life long composer and genre fluid Multi Instrumentalist with 20yrs of recording and production experience

I have been on the lookout for a good deal on a premium multidelay with some lush ambient options for a while. Watching comparison videos and looking for a deal on something like a Flashback, Canyon, Line 6, DD8, DD20 etc. Sweetwater had a really good holiday sale on the Flashback 2x4 so I decided to go for it. First impressions are, most importantly it does sound really good! It is also HUGE, defiantly a pedalboard space hog! It is defiantly for people who like complicated things with lots of customizable tweakability. If you just want a simple straight forward delay and have no interest in interfacing with a computer and programing custom settings this is not the pedal for you, instead I would recommend you get a straightforward quality bucket brigade analogue delay or if you want more features like reverse and mod then probably a canyon. I would however recommend this for more advance and stereo setups, especially ones that involve a computer or other complicated electronic setups that utilize the stereo and MIDI ports. I produce electronic music and LOVE to use Valhalla Delay/Reverb VSTs and was looking for some hardware that can get me in that super lush zone for performing without a computer or to lighten the CPU load. I am always Working with a World Clock usually Ableton or Boss RC505 looper I was very interested in the MIDI ports on the back to sync the tempo... yes it's a BIG pedal but because of that it has MIDI, stereo in and out, expression pedal in and a kill dry switch if you want to use it on a return or bus track. The whole "Tone Print" concept is pretty cool and makes it more like making custom presets with a VST and storing them in a hardware box that is the pedal version of a midi controller, you have a lot of freedom how you want to route control parameters and what the knobs do etc. With the 2x4 you also get 6 slots for tone prints and 2 banks of 3 instant recall settings (dial in your most used settings including tone prints and save them) a dedicated tap tempo, and dedicated switches for looper functions so the size is more of a trade off then a downside. So why didn't I give it 5 stars??? There are a lot more videos about the original then there are of the version 2 as it has been out much longer and in the videos I see people looping the delayed signal...as an example you can get your Floyd style dotted eighth note pattern locked in with the tape delay and loop that, then change to 16th note MOD Delay kick on a fuzz and overdub that... THE 2x4 CAN ONLY LOOP YOUR PREDELAY SIGNAL, so if you were trying to do what I mentioned in the last example you would still NEED A SECOND DELAY pedal stacked before the Flashback2x4!!! and with a footprint like that who wants to spend more real-estate (and$) on a second delay. I went to the TC Electronic website and asked about this , maybe it was user error and I just didn't get how to use it properly.... NO he said to get more tone print slots they had to sacrifice that feature... well That feature was a big selling point for me that this unit did not end up delivering on! It's really rare that the second gen, new and improved version has less features or is missing key features that set the original above others. So conclusion I am still happy with it for what I paid, however I may have been happier with the Flashback triple since I'm not going to be using the looper much if at all. It's nice to have all the features but for the size difference I think the regular Flashback2 would be good enough for most rigs... I feel like the mini is to limited and I would not want to have to play a gig where I relied on my phone to beam different settings through my pickups in between songs. If you do plan on using the looper a lot and want to loop your wet signal you may be better off with the original Flashback4.

Underwhelmed... What am I missing?

By Brock L. from Marlborough, MA
Music Background: ex-touring stunt double

Wicked deal on this from Sweetwater... 90% of my board is TC product. I picked this up to swap out the Alter-Ego. Pretty sure The Alter-Ego is going back in the starting line up. Someone else on here had similar issues with the lack of "How To" regarding this delay... Additionally, the crystal/mash feature just seems silly? I'm sure it has its place (possibly In the enchanted forest of Epic Prog-Rock) But as a meat 'n taters delay Its lost on me. It also seems to like its dedicated power supply as well. Its not digging the AC feed from the Voodoo Labs PWR Supply... I wanna love this thing but every time I play it is underwhelming...

Great delay

By Chris K. from NY
Music Background: 30 years

This is the most user friendly multi delay I've used. Much easier that the also awesome Boss DD-200. The really crazy thing is the cost. I got this as a Black Friday deal so I basically got 6 flashback 2's (and a tap tempo) and a looper for the price of one single Flashback 2.

Enormous in both footprint and potential

By Brandon from Sacramento
Music Background: This is where people try to impress strangers

You may not realize it, but this pedal is probably the largest pedal you'll ever see. It takes up about 1/4 of my board. The subdivisions knob is great. Tap Tempo Is great. The Looper is fine, nothing speciaL (try the Boss Loop Station, best one I've found). It's nice to have on-deMand Access to 3 different delays oN "tap", so to Speak. Unlike the HoF 2, the defaUlt settings on the FlashbaCk actually do things when you hold Mash. Be prepared to do a lot of worK in the Software to get something usable on TonePrint, it is NOT intuitive. That being said, this is a better value than something like the Carbon Copy, which I have lots of experience with. I got this on deep discount and I think I got what I paid for.

Great features, takes up a lot of space.

By Jose from Florida
Music Background: Worship Minister

The pedal itself is great. There's not much this pedal is missing for the price. I don't use the looper, I only use the delay and it has what I need. However, I wish I had looked at how gigantic this thing is. It takes up half of my pedalboard space.

Awesome and powerful delay for the money

By Drew D. from Vancouver WA
Music Background: Electric lead guitar for a praise and worship band

I am a worship guitarist so I need delays ranging from spacey ambient delays to slap back or other rhythmic delays. I have found multiple delays on this unit thag work amazing, my favorite is the binson tc tone print.

Now I did read multiple bad reviews concerning the unit not properly saving presets or reverting to the factory preset when switching from one to the other. I experienced that for myself and was a bit frustrated until I realized it was all user error and could possibly be something that should be included in the user manual. If you click the toggle to save the led will blink and it will save your settings.... maybe. If you hold the toggle to save until the led stops blinking it for sure saves and I haven't had an issue since. I hope that helps any other users that are having that issue.

Almost forever

By Don M.
Music Background: A lifer......

This pedal has been on every configuration of my pedal board for at least 5 years, and is always on as one of my three presets is a light fatner. I love the quick access to three presets on stage, and the sky is the limit for real world useable sounds. I never used the looper, ever. Today my "always on'" preset would quit. A click on and off would bring it back but after a few minutes it would quit again. Do I sent it back for service, buy another one, or try a Stryman? Groan. I thought I'd have this thing forever, but apparently it's just almost forever.

Great delay, everything I will ever need in a delay pedal, love the looper as well.

update to earlier review

By Roscoe from TX

The Red A preset won't turn off when the unit is in buffered bypass mode. I step on the first preset switch, use the effect for a solo, step on it again when the solo is over and the effect is still on. The light is off but I still have a delay going on in my rhythm part. Unacceptable! I have to step on another preset twice (on & off) to defeat the effect. It works when in true bypass but then the effect trail is chopped off when you disengage. I tried to submit a support ticket on the TC Electronic website but can not do so due to their totally screwed up web page. You have to submit your phone number but you can't type in the space provided. It just doesn't work. You have to list the model of the product from a pull down menu but Flashback 2x4 is not an option...

TC Electronics Flashback 2 x 4 Delay Looper

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Blues, Metal, & Rock Rhythm Player

I test drove this pedal after receiving it & this is by far the most versatile pedal in my small collection (Boss Tuner, OCD, Uni-Vibe, Stereo Chorus, EC Pedal, & Flashback 2 x 4 Delay Looper). There are so many different setting & you are able to create so many great sounds variations. It is just mind blowing. I am just a basement rhythm guitar player who loves to jam. I am in no way, shape, or form any kind of critic to give the pros & cons of a product. I just like what I hear!!!

Great sounds. Lacks proper documentation.

By Roscoe from Dallas
Music Background: Piano at 8. Guitar at 13

There's not a bad sound in this pedal but I must deduct one star for being told WHAT the pedal can do rather than HOW to do it. I already knew it would sound great the question was always how good and easy the Toneprint editor was going to be. It has tweaks for days but never tells you how to transfer an edited Toneprint to a preset footswitch. It can't be done until you disconnect the editor from the pedal. Then you can store the Toneprint to a preset. Without this knowledge you'll be bending over all through your gig rotating a knob to the different Toneprint slots. The rest of the editor is fairly intuitive but there's lots to figure out for yourself that could have been easily explained. The online videos don't even scratch the surface and the downloadable instructions are little more than a quick start guide. The Mash thing is cool and useful but the parameters assigned to Mash are all or nothing and values are not editable as they are with an expression pedal. The Toneprints from the stars are not editable and they are all disengaged when your expression pedal is all the way heel down. Not good. But the TC library of Toneprints are editable and a good place to start to customize your own TPs. Several times while gigging I found a delay to still be happening after I had stepped on the preset footswitch to cut the pedal off. I had to rotate the effect selection knob to something else for the delay to stop. It was like the pedal kept accessing a delay from the selection knob even though I was just using the 6 presets.
