Wasn’t impressed

By Tony from NC
Music Background: Pro audio Hobbyist

Let's start with build quality. Mine arrived with the knobs pushed in so tight I had to pull 2 of them out out enough to squeeze a guitar pic between the knob and the unit to turn the knobs comfortably because they were tight to turn. Now let's get into the sounds. Most of the sounds were thin sounding and redundant. You can literally dial though about 5-10 presets before you find a noticeable difference. The knobs to tweak the sounds feel like your working too hard to get sounds your never going to get anyway. I think digitech makes better multi effects units like the RP -55 or RP-90 etc. And that's saying something. Overall I just wasn't impressed and almost tempted to send it back. I think there trying to promote this as a high definition HD unit and there's nothing HD about it.

I now own 3 of these bad boys

By TJ S. from Llano, TX

I have a Tascam dp24SD recorder with a recording console and outboard gear. Dramwer, Black Lion, RODE, SHURE, dbx, FMR, Lexicon, etc. Not LA2A/NEVE/API level but good enough to record and get the sound back out with a high level of sonic quality. I've worked and recorded in some nice studios in Nashville and Dallas, had 9 singles in the Top 40 back in the 90's so I know why those studios need to show off the NEVE, SSL, DAKING, and mics like Neumann U87 and AKG KM184's, yeah sure, go for it. But they'll deliver a poorly written song by someone who can't sing. But at least it will sound good! For the rest of us in the spare bedroom, garage or man cave in the back yard, our focus is getting a great song written, then performed well, and sung well enough to make it believable. It doesn't take a $ Britasci reverb to do that. So now my reason for this FX2000 purchase.

Since I use all analog outboard gear to mix/master through, I used the Lexicon mx200 first but it couldn't split/lo-cut the reverb so bass and kick had reverbs on it. Not good. I started searching for a unit that could adjust frequencies out maybe around 400k and down. Just do a search on the top 5 reverb units and you will see the Lexicon pcm 96, Eventide, Britasci, Yamaha spx900, etc. and this little Behringer fx2000. I think the reverbs were designed after the Yamaha SPX2000 but they are nonetheless wonderful, rich, smooth, and very useable. As a bonus I also found a nice Stereo Spreader, (don't overdo it) Enhancer, (don't overdo it) and exciter, (again..) There were so many usable presets in this I bought a second one to access the other patches along with the reverbs. Then I bought a 3rd one for things like special effects to electric pianos, guitars and then patch it back in when mixing down and access another preset for whatever. You can tweak the parameters for any preset and save, it's really a nice little unit. Get yourself one if you need some great sounding reverbs. It has some compressors in it, but I am happy with my FMR RNC and RNLA for mixing/mastering and input recording sources.

Amazing gear!

By Richard R. from Naramata, BC

This is a fabulous piece of kit that will satisfy a wide range of musicians, from guitar to keys to vocals to drums. I'll focus on guitar. Who is it for? Any guitarist that isn't averse to digital processing. You can use the FX2000 either in a rack (both stage or studio) or in your guitar amp's effects loop. What can it do? Reverb, delay, modulation, EQ, distortion and certain combinations of those things. The 200 factory presets are high quality right out of the box, and you can edit and store those presets in a wide variety of ways.

For the cost of just a moderately-priced guitar stomp box you can own a signal processor with enormous capabilities that sounds great. The same is true for non-guitarist musicians that are looking to add some mojo to their mix. Highly recommended.

works good

By Sweetwater Customer

I bought this audio processor only for adding reverb to some of my projects. The physical controls are set up in a some-what confusing archaic fashion. But they do provide very good management of the reverb parameters. All the other on-board effects I don't use. My biggest complaint: When adding reverb to the input, the output gain is reduced, which is rather annoying.

Easy-to-use, good results, affordable

By Alan from NE Wisconsin
Music Background: Professional musician from late 1970s

This unit replaces effects that no longer work on my small format mixer. I just needed a decent quiet reverb or echo for live solo vocals; set it and forget it. To me, most effects on the fx2000 are somewhat over-the-top, but the dry studio reverb seems good for now (preset I012).

There is a very slight hiss in the sound from the unit which is not noticeable when playing live. And correctable when recording if you use a noise gate. The unit is also easy to understand if you actually read the quick-start guide!

I have experienced another product from Behringer fail in a live situation because their mixer ran way too hot and burned out the phantom power circuit after only a couple dozen shows. So I was leary about this fx2000 unit running hot--but no worries. It barely gets luke-warm after a few hours.

Being an analog bigot, my only possible complaint has to do with digitally converted vocals in a live situation. I was hoping the unit merely adds digitized output to the dry analog signal, but this is not the case. The detailed user manual clearly states the dry signal is converted to digital, the appropriate percent of wet effect is added to the digitized input, and the total result is converted back to analog - oh well. So I then route the fx2000 vocal output to a gate/compressor before it returns to the mixer. Because I want compressed vocals I can't just add this output to the original analog signal. Anyway, the vocals quality is good.

I will probably get a 2nd unit for the studio rack.

Sounds Great!

By Sweetwater Customer

I am a life time gigging musician, this is my "take" on the FX 2000.
Sound is Exceptionally Good, Excellent price, and is well made. My only "negative" is that you only see "patch numbers' ...
in the display, as far as I can tell, there is no way to " Name the patches " like you can on on my Lexicon MX400.
This is not a big problem for my specific application of this unit. I give the FX2000 5 stars all told.
I would recommend it (and Sweetwater, as always) to a friend , without reservation.

A bit disappointed

By CJ G. from Michigan

The tiny nearly camouflaged printing/embossing, below the four editing knobs, has been a source of great frustration. For a few dollars more, Behringer could of added LED lettering, or, at the very least, adjusted the panel layout to make room for larger lettering. P.S. I have no vision issues.
Other than that annoyance, the unit appears to do what it was engineered to do.

Hidden Gem

By Damon d. from Denton, TX
Music Background: Professional Musician

For the price I wasn't expecting the best, but I'm very pleased with this unit. There are a ton of presents to start with and the front panel makes it super easy to dial in something I like from there. The plate reverb is nice and the flavor is smooth and a great way to avoid using so many plug-ins on tracks. Lots of delays, reverbs, chorus, etc. Absolutely worth the price.

Cherry On The Top

By Arlen from Outside the Fort
Music Background: Vagabond street performer 60+ years

I had been using plugins for vocal and guitar tracking but now I can use this lil gem. Using only two of the 100 presets and so for later use I doubt I'll ever use this machine to it's full potential. I use toontrack midi software for drums, bass guitar and keyboard. So the rhythm section is very believable the instruments being recorded in a million dollar studio eh? The challenge of course has been to bring my tracks up to that potential of sound. Quit the challenge in a poor man's studio. The ART VLA2, Golden age pre amp jr, golden age comp 54 mk 3, and the Klark Tech Pultec have helped ALOT. Getting the guitar and vocal tracks up to par meant ambiance and verb settings I could use in the plugin world but still not what I wanted to hear. Adding the Behringer Virtualizer FX2000 made it work. So happy I got this, the "Cherry On The Top". Very affordable, sounds so great, and brings my productions up to a believable sound. Not what a million dollar studio could do but VERY close. Love what happens with guitar and vocal tracks. YEP! Buy it! You'll love it!

Poor Boy's Studio

By Arlen T. from Fort Wayne, IN
Music Background: Vagabond street performer 50+ years

I had been looking at an FX processor to top off this CH strip I've built to work with the Toontrack midi's I have in use for building songs. The Bellringer FX2000 was in budget and easy enough to get paid off. I did not expect the quality of sound and how much it would help me though. Two pages of presets far above anything I might use (I say might eh?) Works nicely, no noise, I can track in stereo file, then export to mono in a separate folder to mix in total wave for. A very nice addition to my lil poor boy's studio. Of course Cameron McMullen and everyone at SwH2O very careful to make sure all is fine.
$ to the door in less than 72 hours? What a deal.

A great box for the money

By Thomas P.
Music Background: Saxophones, EWI and keyboards, Jazz and avant garde

I have been using this processor for live performance and in my the studio. It works great and has many effects that you will actually use. A rather strange condition happened when I was using it to put an effect on a previously recorded part by recording a separate track for the effect. The source track contained a part performed with my EWI. The effect track had some very narrow pulses on it in random places. This did not happen with my saxophones or any other instrument. It might have been some strange issue with the signal that was digitally generated and does not happen when I play the EWI directly through it when fed with a small mixer.
Digital can be stranger than analog. Anyway, I recommend this device. You can program 100 user presets to custom tailor your sound. It is a great processor for live performance.

Quite pleased

By RYAN H. from Portland, OR
Music Background: Producer

I always watch videos before buying, especially when trying to get the best bang for the buck.
This unit is Excellent! The options are endless; far more than what I thought that I needed.
The routing was not obvious as the markings are not clear on the unit, then I had to choose the mono setting so that the stereo effects would work, due to the single aux out on the mixing board. It appears that a few of the 3D effects cannot be optimized due to this.
The rack ears cannot be removed without exposing large openings in the housing. No biggie.

Good value multi-effects unit, with limitations

By Stephen C. from Janesville, WI

There really is a lot to like about what Behringer has done here in the FX2000:

- There is a good variety of effect algorithms included, not a huge amount, but enough for this to be a good bread-and-butter effects unit.
- Most of the effects sound pretty good to my ear technically speaking, the sound is crisp, there's a good helping of stereo effects, no glitches or issues I've found.
- Build quality isn't premium, but it is still really solid. I wouldn't need to worry about tossing this into a travel/gig rack.
- The features-to-price value here is excellent, at $ you're under the price of most decent guitar pedals that offer merely a fraction of what this unit can do.
- It's rack mountable. If you're more of a studio or engineer guy like me then this is a positive thing. The rack format has been declining in popularity for dedicated effects since the 2000s (much to my disappointment), but fortunately there still are a few contenders around like this FX2000.

With all of that praise, you might start to wonder why I didn't give this unit 5 stars! Well, there are a few problems with it, some of which just come with the territory of being a more budget-friendly unit, while others could have been avoided:

- The controls are weird on this thing. I haven't been able to figure out why, but the controls are just not intuitive to use and can give you the feeling of being lost even though there's only a handful of screens! I feel like Behringer didn't do enough testing of this control scheme with actual musicians first who could have pointed out some of the confusing behaviors.
- You can't use more than one effect except for specific pairings of effects that Behringer pre-configured as a single effect (delay+reverb, chorus+reverb, etc). This reduces the versatility of the unit a lot, especially since the pairings reduce the parameters available for each effect in the pair. For example, when using delay+reverb, you can't choose which delay algorithm nor which reverb algorithm you want. This is a bummer because the Cathedral reverb algorithm actually sounds suprisingly good, but you can't use it paired with delay because the "delay+reverb" effect is locked in to plate reverb only. Big missed opportunity.

Despite these cons, for the low price I paid for it is worth keeping in my home studio just to have the option of adding a random effect to something if I need to. At the very least, it also has a decent EQ and compressor with physical controls that are nice to have on hand as well. It is very much a "jack of all trades, master of none" sort of device.

If you primarily work inside a DAW and use plugins rather than outboard gear, I would probably avoid this. There's nothing stellar here that your DAW probably can't already do or could do with a plugin that costs less. However if you primarily play live or use a hardware-focused studio setup, this might be worth a look to add some extra flexibility to your effects chain without spending much. There's certainly not much competition at this price point.

Good while it lasts

By James S. from California
Music Background: Lifelong musician, pro since 1991

This is the second piece of rack-mount Behringer processing gear that has crapped out on me. In both cases the power supply failed, producing weird and intermittent misbehavior. It's a great machine while it's working, and for the price you could keep a spare on hand, but your professionalism takes a hit when you have to stop and chase sonic goblins that crop up at the most inopportune times. In this instance, I had it in a send/return loop, so I was able to just yank a couple jumpers and get back to business without it, but if you're aiming for world-class flawless performance, you're going to have to spend some bigger money.

Excellent reverbs, never mind the price

By Sweetwater Customer

I have been playing mostly with the smooth, lush reverbs and various flange/chorus/reverb/delay combos on electric guitar, but thus far I could not be more pleased. There's a reason these units sell out as soon as they are in stock.

Once you get the hang of the editing system (which is actually pretty straightforward), there's a high degree of control and customization available for each of the 71 effects algorithms.

The maximum stereo delay is 5.499 seconds ....

Great communication from Sweetwater -- they sent a notice that it was back in stock and I jumped on it immediately. Good thing too, because I see it's back-ordered again!

It's no Bricasti 7 Or H9000, but Reverbs are Studio Grade

By Texasaurus R.

We've been using one in a live vocal rig for over two years- it sounds great for the price-point and has proven to be durable as well. A ton of presets for vocalist, guitarists, keyboardist, everything from reverbs/delays, modulation to compression to...even a great stereo 2-track mix EQ option for final mix, studio or live. We decided to add an effects unit to a jack-of-all-trades mixer we use for everything...band practice, live gigs, drums sub-mix, etc., and, as of late, we've been using it in recording mode. Used the preamp's insert to add some seriously divine reverb to a vocal channel we've been using to record "wet", the results are stellar. We have some great DAW plugins, ie Lexicon, Eventide, Waves, etc., and it's amazing what the FX2000's reverb sounds like in an A/B comparison. Use high-quality headphones and compare, you will be pleasantly surprised. Superb reverbs in this inexpensive rack processor, an excellent deal for a hardware unit. We've noticed the price has risen since our purchase but we would pay full price for a replacement, it's a hella deal.

FX2000

By Michel from New York
Music Background: Engineer - Trumpet/Keyboards

Picked up two of these guys to replace a Quadraverb and Quadvaverb GT that are showing signs of age. The Behringer units are pristine and offer a lot of bang for the buck. The reverbs are lush and usable and the delays and pitch options are great. I only wish there was more detail on MIDI control of the modulation parameters.

One more thing: The LEDs are awesome! Very bright - in fact, airplanes flying over your studio may have to be warned. What a relief from having to squint to see aging LCD screens.

Highly recommended for the price!

LUSH INEXPENSIVE REVERB

By Mark K. from sPACE COAST, FLORIDA
Music Background: pro musician and engineer

This unit blows away all the other lower priced reverbs in terms of tone. It's lush, pure, clean and adjustable.

You've got to be willing to spend a little time in the manual to extract the real potential from this beast but sonically it can reward you with world class DSP results worth 10x the price.

In use my Vitualizer is in a rack with a Kemper rack, a Lexicon PCM 92 along with several other Lexicon DSP boxes AND multiple Eventide H9 Max. I'm a big fan of the Eventide Black Hole reverb and have created my own Blackhole simulation on the Behringer that is even better.

The Virtualizer has an incredible midi implementation too, enough to make your head spin and challenge my Ground Control Pro.

As usual on Behringer rack mount, there are both XLR and 1/4" balanced inputs/outputs. I wish all manufacturers would do this and give you both.

Did you notice the price? It's insanely low but close your eyes and the sound from this thing is up there with the best of the best. It's your call. Even if you have a lot of cash one of these makes a really nice effect processor.

Good music to all!

Not Pro Level

By Pete K. from Brooklyn

Behringer often hits it out of the park making quality gear at very affordable prices. Unfortunately, the Virtualizer is a swing and a miss for Behringer. They could do a lot better. In fact, I believe the outboard effects market is ripe for disruption. I mean, who really has $3k + to buy an M7? I'm hoping Behringer eventually delivers something better.

Because it is relatively cheap, I bought it on a lark hoping that maybe one or more of the presets might be useful as mix send for something...anything... Nope. Not even the "psychoacoustic effects" that Behringer uses to market this thing sound convincing. Don't get me wrong - I love a good grainy reverb every now & then. But this thing just sounds bad.

This might be useful if you're strapped for cash and need a basic FX unit for live performances. In that regard, it's a pretty decent value considering the plethora of FX algos it offers. However, for any serious pro audio work or really any context where details matter, the Virtualizer doesn't deliver.

Priced at under $200, it's kinda silly to complain about this unit at all. However, when you consider the quality of some of Behringer's other gear in this general price range (Model D, X touch, etc.) I was disappointed and returned it almost immediately.

The Virtualizer Provides Plenty Of FX Options

By Ken O.

Behringer has packed a lot of effects into this rack-mount unit, hard to complain about that! The user manual leaves a bit to be desired, nothing new regarding Behringer. Bought this processor to insert in a mixer aux/effects send for live gigs and it has fit the bill really well. While it is a true stereo processor, it has some top-notch reverbs/FXfor use with a mono FX send. I was really happy that I can use it as a compressor in a channel insert on my recording interface, as a reverb/delay unit in my live band mixer, in the effects loop on my guitar amp. There are some quirks regarding exiting certain menus /setup and there are so many parameter choices it's easy to get overwhelmed and frustrated. Once you learn to navigate the FX2000 you will appreciate all the processing Behringer loaded up in it. So far, ZERO regrets with this purchase. Really appreciate no wall wart power supply! At this price-point, a quality bargain from Sweetwater.

Ok for the investment

By Michael from South Carolina
Music Background: 30 years of performance, Pro player and sound tech

For the price this unit does what it says it does. Be aware that it can be time consuming to muddle through the patches, and you cannot just choose effects to combine- for example, if I want to combine Hall Reverb and a specific Delay I will need to be fortunate enough to find a preset that has the both and make edits to the parameters that are available. Functions could be more intuitive. It is an affordable effects unit.

Yes...No...Maybe

By Customer

Our FX2000 arrived with outside shipping box in good condition while the stock Behringer box the FX2000 is sold in looked like a pack of rats had eaten one end of it. I was surprised Sweetwater packed it up and sent it that way...I sure wouldn't send a package to a client in that condition.
We purchased the Virtualizer to use in a live gig situation;our live/DJ mixer doesn't have built in effects. The reverb and delay+reverb presets sound better than we expected, perfect for what we needed it for. A huge plus is that it can also be used as a dynamics/EQ unit. Plus there's a double-handful of other modulation/special effects that are pretty darn good. We use VST plugins within our DAW but just for drill I patched the Virtualizer into an insert on a recording interface and was mostly happy with that, too.
The only negative thing I can say about this "bargain effects unit" is that a couple times it has done a weird glitch that took turning it off and back on to fix. The glitch occurred during user preset saves,so we will forego any more of that and just use the stock presets for reverb/delay. Everytime it glitched, all I could think of was that damaged box it was shipped in. IF this FX2000 doesn't do a permanent glitch anytime soon, then we can safely say it was worth the going price. Well, actually, when it works properly, it's an astounding amount of kit for the price-point.

HUGE bang for the buck !

By Greg M. from AUSTIN, TX

I have a stereo guitar rig, and have a 15 year old Behringer Ultrafex Pro processor that I picked up used for cheap. I didn't expect it to do much, but it has a "surround processor " effect that does a surprisingly good job of making stereo effects like chorus and tremolo sound bigger and better. So...when I saw how low the price is for the Virtualizer, I figured it'd be an easy upgrade. This is another home run for Behringer...a perfect example of how they often give you a LOT for your money. I'm sure most tone snobs and studio engineers turn their nose up at a name like Behringer, but for the rest of us, this unit is MORE than enough to get the effects you're looking for. Five or ten years ago a unit of this quality would have had a MUCH higher price. I had the basic controls figured out on the first day. Listened to all the presets, and they all sound good. Most of the effects sound better and are easier to edit than the effects in my Line 6 POD 500x. Easy to edit, and easy to save your edits. Unlike some units, you don't have to have an engineering degree to figure out how to use it. Gotta love having 4 knobs to edit with, plus an effect mix knob. I'm sure it'll work great on vocals, keys, whatever. You can't go wrong with this one.

Outstanding effect unit for Classical Organ

By Mel T. from Kelseyville, CA
Music Background: BA in music and professional classical organist

I recently purchased this unit to replace an MX100 by another company. The difference in sound quality is exceptional. I installed this unit in a sound rack connected to an older Allen Digital Organ (1978). This is the first unit that I have found which perfectly reproduces the reed stops (such as trumpet, oboe and schalmi). I believe it is because this unit keeps the harmonics of the stops in proper phasing which restores the brilliance in the original samples in the Allen. Also, the Chorus 1 produces the best classical celeste strings effect (which this organ does not have) that I have found. The sound was on par with the celeste that Allen creates on its larger organs using 2 ranks (sets) of tone generators. Everything that I have that is built by Beringer has been of excellent quality for the price and has been most reliable.

I needed an affordable reverb unit because I did not like the built in reverb in my mixer. I was able to use this in my aux send and aux return and use my TC Helicon Voice Works as a Sub1 send.

FX 2000

By Michael S. from New Haven. Vt.
Music Background: Bass player my whole life pro.

I love the endless options of Editting that can be done and storing and saving every thingy. What a hell of a deal. The fx are all good guality I am pleased beyond measure. Really concider this processor before you consider any other. I am more than satified and so is my band.

Hoped for better sound but its all I needed.

By Riskey from Corydon, IN USA
Music Background: I've done it all at some level or another for 50 years and counting.

I bought it to give the drummer some fx for his vocal on his phones. This unit works for this purpose. If you want a little better sound quality you need to spend a little more money. It has a lot of algorithms and plenty of control. It does take a little time to become familiar with the menus. The I/O has everything you need. There's even a handy line level shifter on each channel.
The sound is OK when money is more of an issue than quality.

This is pretty awesome!

By Joe C. from Florida USA
Music Background: Pro Musician

I have a home studio, have studied & played music for years, & have a good ear for quality. I took a chance and bought this with a gift card I had received, not really knowing what to expect and being a bit puzzled by the mixed reviews online. Well, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised! I use the unit primarily as a studio reverb and now I run everything from pianos, guitars. and vocals through it ALL of the time. The stage reverb sounds amazing on pianos! Spring & chorus on guitar are also studio quality. Vocals with the cathedral reverb are simply heavenly- spacious and very realistic with tremendous depth. This processor is highly recommended! No issues whatsoever running XLR outs into my recording interface. What a deal!

Behringer Virtualizer 3D FX2000

Has some great sounds. A little difficult to understand. Need to buy the foot controller for it, but programming it is a little intimidating.

does the job well

By paul r. from Philadelphia area, USA
Music Background: serious hobbyist

produces good reverberation effects ; adds depth to the music; found the basic controls easy to operate; plenty of effects to chose from; only problem is how to get back the original effects parameters once I have stored a custom arrangement in one of the user programs; all in all, I am enjoying it.

AS LUSH and AS THICK AS A LEXICON PCM 91 AND 92!

By Jordan L. from Westminster, CA
Music Background: Keyboardist, arranger and composer.

Vocals from my Avantone CV12 into an LA-610 then into Protools then mixing onto my Allen/Heath board, this FX2000 gave it a super nice hall with that very SMOOTH TAIL just like what Lexicons are known for! Wow! Behringer did an amazing job with this effects unit!
