The Classic Electric Grand — in a Plug-in

From Elton John and Peter Gabriel to Herbie Hancock and Vangelis, the Yamaha CP-80 was the definitive 1980s electric grand piano sound. For their Electric 80 Piano virtual instrument, Waves expertly sampled a fastidiously maintained CP-80, and the results deliver the classic shiny leads and reverberant chords that graced some of our favorite '80s rock, jazz, pop, and R&B. The original electro-acoustic instrument featured fewer strings per key than a traditional acoustic piano, resulting in a streamlined sound that's easier to mix into your music. Waves Electric 80 captures all the magic, including its tone controls, tremolo, and Sustain Resonance, which lets you control the simulated sympathetic resonance of un-played strings — ideal for adding depth and dimension to both solos and chords.

Every note a classic

You know most of the songs by heart. The Police, Journey, U2, George Duke, Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Toto, Hall & Oates. For these and countless other artists of the era, the original Yamaha CP-80 electric grand was essential kit. Flash forward to today, and the CP-80's classic sound is once again finding favor with contemporary bands. Waves brings you this timeless sound in a convenient plug-in with a fast, user-friendly interface. The mixer section lets you blend four sounds sampled from the original instrument: the main sound, plus the key up, internal mechanics, and sustain pedal. Factor in the onboard, studio-grade effects and compression, and you're ready to unleash this essential classic keyboard onstage or in the studio. Sweetwater's advice: Waves' Electric 80 Piano sounds great and it's an amazing value. Go for it!

Waves Electric Grand 80 Piano

I'm really happy with the Electric Grand 80, it has a deep rich sound that's very convincing. When your instrument sounds good it inspires you to play good. It has some nice presets and plenty of all the FX effects to come up with just the right sound. I got this instrument when it was on sale and it's got to be one of the best buys I've made. Comes as a standalone and VST instrument a big plus. I just love it!

Great sound! Great value!

This is my first VST piano purchase and I am well pleased by the product and by Sweetwater's discount. Wonderful sound and easy to use! Nothing to dislike except minus a half point due to the dated and unscalable user interface (stylistically fine, but too small and too low resolution for today's larger monitors).

Solid Performer

Nice model of the Yamaha CP80. Best point is the fantastic UI - simple, straight forward layout, all you need is on one page. You can add in mechanical and pedal noise for an extra touch of realism. Samples preserve some of the subtle, slightly out of tune nature of an original CP80 which, for the most part, works well. In the lower 2 octaves, however, on some presets the E is a bit "dead" sounding compared to the notes around it, and E flat is a bit "buzzy". Those ranges are below what I would usually play, and on only a few presets, so not a problem for me. Overall it has character. Sound is comparable to Addictive Keys and MOTU Electric Keys. I don't care for the UI of Addictive Keys, and while Electric Keys has a broader range of instruments, it comes in at a much higher price point. If you are simply looking for a tool to cover the CP80, the Waves offering is a good choice.

Since the early days of DAW software, Waves has been a dominating force in music and audio production. For those of us here at Sweetwater who've been recording since the industry switched over to computer-based studios, it's impossible to imagine sessions without L series Ultramaximizers, MaxxBass, and other staples. Since then, we've been impressed every time Waves has brought top producers such as Jack Joseph Puig and Chris Lord-Alge to Sweetwater to show off their next cutting-edge creations, and Waves is constantly adding new and innovative plug-ins to their catalog. And with cool new gear such as their SoundGrid series, Sweetwater engineers have discovered just how easy it is to use Waves plug-ins live.
