Epiphone Thunderbird 60s Bass - Ebony Reviews

4-string Electric Bass with Mahogany Wings, 7-piece Walnut/Mahogany Neck, Indian Laurel Fretboard, and 2 Humbucking Pickups - Cherry

Enjoy the look, feel, and vibe of an early '60s Thunderbird bass with the Epiphone Thunderbird 60s Bass. It packs a pair of Epiphone's ProBucker 760TM humbucking bass pickups, designed to replicate Gibson's original Thunderbird pickups. The replica mid-'60s Tune-o-matic bridge sits atop a vintage-style "claw" tailpiece, while open-gear "Clover" tuning machines with 17:1 ratio combines an old-school look with precision tuning performance. Complete with a 7-piece walnut/mahogany neck with through-body design and mahogany body wings, the Epiphone Thunderbird 60s Bass is a great value in a vintage-themed bass guitar.

NICE VINAGE SOUND!

By Tom Schlatter from Kalispell, Montana on November 9, 2023 Music Background: playing guitar/bass since the late '60's/ early '70's

I really like my P- Bass, but it can't compare to the sound that come from the T- Bird!

Killer bass

By Rich D from PA on June 6, 2023

I have many high end basses
This one is right up there with them.
Came set up perfect out of the box!!!

Awesome for the price!

This was my first epiphone and let me just say the quality for what you pay is quite impressive. Great build quality for a sub 1k bass!

Still the best Thunderbird from Gibson/Epi since the '60s.

By Dagrev from Louisville. Ky on November 25, 2022 Music Background: Been playing decades.

I have owned a '64 IV since 1981, so that's the gold standard for me and the sound that's been in my head for decades. Having said that, the Epi is very well built. I have two (burst and white), and both are well above their price. I also have a '76, a '06 modern Gibson (which does not sound like a vintage Thunderbird at all), a '21 Non-reverse and a '64 Epi Embassy. The VP/60s is by far as close as you can get to the vintage tone without spending thousands on a Lull or something of that nature, or a Greco that will also cost more if you can find one. One secret is Epi, unlike modern Gibsons, had the good sense to put the pickups in almost the exact locations of the 60s, and this makes a huge difference compared to modern Gibsons.
The Epi can lack some bigness and depth of the 60s--but amps have knobs that turn and strings will make a huge difference. Like any bass, not every string (even your current fav) will necessarily be a great match. Boomers sound great (add depth and punch), Dean Markley Blue Steels, and even GHS Precision flats are amazing. EB Cobalt flats also sound great. Want the closest thing to the real deal without spending $$$$? The Epi is the next best thing to the real deal.

Great bass

By Sweetwater Customer on June 15, 2022 Music Background: Been gigging 30years plus.

Get this bass! It won't break the bank and sounds better than your P or J bass. Great midrange sound. Don't have to turn up to be heard. This instrument cuts through the mix and gives you that necessary bombastic bottom. Seriously this is a great bass, awesome sound, comfortable neck. T.B. the sales associate was super helpful and made this purchase incredibly stress free. He answered all of my questions and the fact the he himself is a musician was very helpful.

Can't beat the price

By MTN man from ELLIJAY, GA on March 20, 2022 Music Background: Playing for a long long time.

This is my favorite bass now. Love the way it sounds. Had it set up at Sweetwater and still in tune. Thanks Sweetwater for another guitar and excellent job shipping it.

Blown away indeed!

the wait was worth it. what a wonderful instrument!!!
the finish is flawless and gorgeous with all that nickel over a shiny ebony.
the sound is powerful, as expected from a thunderbird bass, but still very clear and articulate. points for the probucker 760 pickups.
for those looking for the sound described as "angry piano", this is THE BASS!
greetings to Patrick and Damon, who assisted me in this purchase

Epiphone TBird excells once more.

By Martin Thompson from Mesa AZ on January 5, 2018

Excellent setup flawless finish great action. I changed the stock strings to DAdario Chrome flat wounds and am delighted with feel and tone. Not a lightweight bass so get a good strap for it. Sustain is out of this world. Not neck heavy to the extent that it's a problem but this is a big bass, it dwarfs everything else in my guitar rack making my LesPaul look tiny..

Finally here.

By Gregg Edwardson from New Jersey on December 3, 2017 Music Background: Former performing musician, now more of a hobbyist / enthusiast.

After a long wait and great cooperation from Brad my sales rep. my new Epiphone T-Bird vintage Pro finally got here.
I could be more happy with it. the tone and feel of this bass is fantastic and for a large bass it just feels right in my hands.
I highly recommend getting this one. Probably the best bass Epiphone has ever offered.
I now have three. A standard vintage, a 5 string Pro with the active electronics and now this beast.

Super sweet new toy

By Skot from Grand Rapids Mi on June 9, 2020 Music Background: Serious hobbyist

Just got my t-bird vintage a couple days ago. Being quarantined I've had plenty of free time and this bass has been an extreme pleasure getting to know. I own way more basses than I need, and most of them were considerably more costly than this one. The finish and fretwork on this are equivalent to anything, though. And the neck is so slim and fast it seems to play itself. I'm still finding the sweetspot for my style of play on it but the overall sound is rich and throaty. This is a gem of a bass for the price. You should buy one.

Mixed Bag but nice bass

By Sweetwater Customer on January 2, 2018 Music Background: Pro level player and columnist

I bought the 2017 Epiphone Embassy as I am a fan of these basses and Tbirds. I own both real ones. I was very impressed by the Epi so I bought the Tbird. The'bird plays great, has full size chrome hardware, it intonates, it balances and looks spot on. They even got the square heel coorect! 2 things I do not like about the bass. The neck finish (I have black) feels very grabby. This was an easy fix. The pickups however sound cheap. By itself the bass has that blah blah blah nasally midrange and no richness. In the live mix, its lost with no balls or bottom. Great job with the bass but really lousy pickups. A set of thunderbuckers are going in soon...

Sounds Like a Cheap Bass

By Sweetwater Customer on December 16, 2017

The Classic Pro with the TB Ceramic PUPS sounds better and is cheaper. I do like the look of this one better. It sounds nothing like a real 63. New PUPS would make this an amazing bass as is it sounds average. I did A/B these with a 3person panel and 5 basses. This one was the worst sounding unanimously.
