Peavey Decade Preamp Pedal Reviews

Preamp Pedal with Pre- and Post-gain Controls, 3-band EQ, Hard Bypass Switch, and Saturation Switch

From the western twang of the pedal steel to the ominous depths of death metal, Peavey has had a hand in shaping the sound of guitar-driven music for well over a half-century. Now, in a series of compact pedals, Peavey gifts players with one-to-one re-creations of the famed preamp sections of classic Peavey amps. Admittedly so, this Decade reboot caught Peavey by surprise. The original Peavey Decade amp found a new resurgence (and heightened price point on used-gear sites) after Josh Homme, guitarist and founding member of Queens of the Stone Age, innocuously name-checked the amp when answering a question regarding QOTSA's distinctive sound. Peavey subsequently partnered with Josh on the Peavey Decade Too amp, which led to duplicating the results for this Decade preamp pedal. This stompbox pays homage to the '80s amplifier by featuring a replication of the Decade’s original preamp circuit, a 3-band EQ comprised of Low, Mid, and High frequency knobs, and a combination of Pre- and Post-gain knobs for precise tonal control. In addition, Peavey outfitted the reimagined Decade with a Saturation switch, a feature that guitarists at Sweetwater find provides a full, capacious sound and an overall broader palate with which to navigate. With the entirety of its preamp pedal line, Peavey has opened the door for guitarists to explore the sounds that helped define notable eras of rock, metal, country, blues, and beyond. Whether you rock an expansive rig or opt for a more modest approach, the Peavey Decade preamp pedal adds equal doses of grit, depth, and control.

Flexible but flawed

By Mike

Bought this pedal to use as a preamp into an IR loader. The sounds are great, construction is solid, and it's highly tweakable. But there is a significant volume drop when engaging the saturation switch, so if you were thinking you'd get a clean/dirty 2 channel preamp, it doesn't really work that way. I use it mostly as a pushed clean to run gain pedals in front of, and to that end it works well. I wish the saturation switch had assignable volume. 4 stars for being good, but not perfect.

Not what I expected, but I love it

Let me get this out of the way up front - I've never owned a Peavey practice amp, and I have no idea if the Decade pedal sounds anything like the Decade amp, old or re-issue. I'm not even a Queens of the Stone Age fan, although I do like Kyuss and desert/stoner rock in general. I watched a lot of videos, and most seemed to agree that the pedal was dirty, gnarly, and lo-fi. I thought that sounded like a lot of fun, so I picked one up.

Imagine my surprise when I plugged it in and it was none of those things. Maybe all of the demos have been plugged into the front of amplifiers instead of using the pedal as an actual pre-amp. I am running it into the effects loop of an Orange Rocker Terror, into an Axe FX which is simulating a power amp, or through a Two Notes Torpedo CAB M, also providing power amp simulation. Through all 3 setups the pedal is remarkable. It's not fizzy and transistor sounding at all. In fact, I think it provides a killer classic rock sound. The EQ control is powerful, and I can get something close to the Michael Schenker cocked wah sound from UFO. Even with the pre- and post-gain knobs maxed out I can't get it to sound thin, fizzy, and lo-fi. It's just a killer pre-amp. I don't know if that means that I'm using it rightly or wrongly, but I love this pedal.

I'm still looking for a good desert rock sound, though.

Sounds as advertised

I got it! It is definitely a keeper, but I will say this pedal is not for everyone. It has a lo-fi vibe. If you are looking for buttery, creamy overdrive, this is not your pedal. It is very raspy, almost more fuzz-like than distortion. In its standard mode, it sounds as advertised, like a cranked small solid-state practice amp. 70's style drive with lots of grit and nice touch sensitivity. When hitting the "SATURATION" switch, it is a gain boost that kicks the pedal into the realm of metal. Those '90s solid-state metal tones are within reach.

The form factor is smaller than I expected, which is nice. Slightly shorter and slightly wider than a standard BOSS pedal. It is a plastic enclosure, which is fine by me. I will say this pedal adds an overdrive/distortion flavor I previously did not have, so I am very happy with it.
