Coated Bass Strings with Better-than-uncoated Sound

Can coated electric bass guitar strings deliver a sound equal to uncoated strings? Infused with DR Strings’ proprietary K3 technology, Dragon Skin strings might make you a believer. DR Strings' Dragon Skins are crafted using time-proven string-making techniques employing stainless-steel wrap over round-core wire, priming them for amazing response and wonderful sustain. In fact, when we demoed Dragon Skin strings here at Sweetwater, we found them to deliver more volume, fewer unwanted overtones, enhanced clarity, and increased articulation when compared to many uncoated strings we’ve tried. And when you consider that Dragon Skin strings are both corrosion- and perspiration-resistant, the choice is almost a no-brainer!

DR Strings Dragon Skin Coated Bass Strings Features:

  • Electric bass guitar strings featuring coated stainless-steel wrap over a round core
  • Patented K3 coating technique ensures excellent intonation and punchy, clear tone
  • Delivers more volume, fewer unwanted overtones, enhanced clarity, and increased articulation over many uncoated strings

After having these strings for a couple of weeks, they are my new go-to strings!

I like to try out new strings every once in a while to see how they work for me. I have been playing bass for a bit over a year, and I like to experiment. I have mostly used D'Addario ProSteels up to this point, and Rotosound Swing Bass strings a few times. There are two aspects of these Dragon Skin strings that intrigued me. First, they have a round core, instead of the usual hexagonal core that I have been using. Secondly, they have a coating on them. The reviews suggest that they are bright and have a great sound, while minimizing some undesirable overtones. I received them and have a different look than their non-coated counterparts; I would say that they are ever so slightly darker than regular stainless steel, but you would have to see them side-by-side to notice the difference. The feel of these strings is excellent, and I cannot notice any difference between these and strings without a coating. Their sound is crisp and clear and articulate. They are bright (as advertised) without being harsh. I have not had them long enough to comment on their longevity. The other thing that is hard to evaluate is the claim about reduced unwanted overtones because I do not have two identically configured basses, so the difference in pickups makes it hard to tell. They just sound amazing and I might stop experimenting with strings, now, because I like them that much.
