Keeley Compressor
I am not a bassist, but record a lot of electric bass at home. This pedal really helps with getting my performance right at the source. I also like using it to compress lead notes for a mild Holdsworth-ish sound and sustaining cleaner electric guitar sounds. I have been looking for a compressor that operates more like a studio compressor for a while and this is it.
It is tiny.
I just received it today, from Sweetwater. It works good, but it is tiny. You would never know that from the Sweetwater pictures. Also, the two page instructions are written in tiny text. You almost need a magnifying glass to read them. Also, the four "rubber" discs for the bottom, are stick-on. It is tiny, the instruction text is tiny, and the bottom disks are stick-on, all for only $!
A Necessity.
Worth Every Penny
Robert Keeley is the expert in compressors and this has all you will ever need. Being able to see when the compression kicks in is so essential. The compression is subtle but you can tell it's working. It's not like a Dynacomp although you can use the auto function to get close to that sound. Overall, it's worth the price.
Perfect for acoustic guitar
I use this in a house of worship with very 'live' acoustics. Three things I love: 1. A fast attack eliminates the string noise from the bridge pickup in my Taylor, and takes the amplified sound of my Lowden to another level of warmth & clarity. 2. Using 4:1 soft knee compression tames the strident treble frequencies and aids in feedback suppression so that I can get full, round bass notes without having to notch them out with EQ. 3. The sum of all the parts is a full, string-to-string balanced acoustic sound: strummed or finger picked. I've been chasing this sound for 30 years and found it! Worth every penny.
Worth it...
For those of you that know what a compressor can do after the distortion pedal (guitar knob volume cleanup), this does the trick. I wanted a "3rd" channel for my Mark 5 35. I use a distortion box that is well known for it's ability to clean up but needed to boost the volume of the clean up while taming the loudness of the cranked guitar. Works perfectly. Set it forget it. After some spending a bit of time with this, I was able to have the same setting used after the pedal even with the pedal off. Pure clean sounds have the extra bit of oomph without getting dirty.
Clean and spanky!
I bought this for my bass, but it works fantastic on my guitars as well. This is my first compressor limiter (I have a couple compressor sustainers) and the Keeley Compressor Pro is fantastic. It's versatile and sounds great. I was surprised at how great the auto attack/release function is. I highly recommend this compressor.
