Golden Age Project Comp-2A Vintage Style Compressor/Leveler Reviews

1-channel Electro-optical Tube Compressor with Program-dependent Attack and Release Times, XLR and TRS I/O, and Internal Power Supply

The Golden Age Comp-2A is a single-channel optical compressor/leveler designed after the most coveted tube compressor of all time. The Comp-2A features vacuum tubes in its signal and side-chain path, and its input and output are transformer-balanced with separate transformers, each optimized for its intended purpose. This is how audio components were built before the advent of transistors and integrated circuits, and it pays dividends in the form of warm, deliciously musical vintage-inspired sound. Sweetwater knows you want one, and we have good news: the Comp-2A is so delightfully affordable, you'll likely want two for stereo linking.

Definitely the best LA-2A Clone for under $

By Dan from NY
Music Background: Bassist/Engineer/Pug Owner

I had a Klark Teknik and a Warm Audio optical comp before and this one is much, much better in almost every conceivable way. Sounds absolutely dynamite on vocals (VP28-> EQ73jr-> Comp2A). This is definitely one of those situations where I wish I had purchased this sooner. For those worried about noise- it is dead silent. Can be really colored if pushed, as others have said. Ordering another one soon. Buy it before they increase the price to $...

Really solid little compressor!

By Brian F.

It's easy to be skeptical with the price point and the small size of this unit. But it sounds like the real deal. It gives you a nice gentle roll off of high frequencies along with nice harmonics. This kind can add a LOT of color if you push it hard. But it can also be fairly transparent when gain staged the right way. I switched out the 6N6 tube for a NOS 12BH7 and the 6P1 for a 6AQ5, which opened up the top end, added a little more level and extended the bass very slightly. But the stock tubes still sound killer. Chinese tubes sounding brittle is a myth... it's all about the circuit around the tubes. Anyway, buy it and use it on vocals and bass!

IMO The Best LA-2A Reproduction Out There

By Jim V. from Cocoa Beach, FL
Music Background: Old 80's engineer.....

After trying several other LA-2A style clone compressors out there I stumbled upon this fantastic small company making great vintage-style gear at an excellent price. The Comp-2A is just as warm and gentle as I remember the original from my glory days back in the 80's. If you are a newer engineer be warned that the 2A style compressor is not for everything due to its slower characteristics but they are what make it truly shine on vocals or acoustic guitar and sounds of that nature. I ended up buying a second Comp-2A to have the option to use a stereo pair when needed. Be warned though that with the tubes these guys get pretty hot just like the originals and need extra space in your rack for venting.

If you are in the market for an LA-2A style compressor but don't have the $4K laying around then certainly give this one a try....

I would also like to add that on the couple occasions I sent a message to GAP I received a reply back from Bo Medin himself within a day! It's great to deal with a smaller company and I cannot say enough about their products and support.

As always a quick kudos to my sales engineer of 15 years Mr. Matt Emmick :)

Great value

By AndrewCCM from Texas

While the meter is a bit erratic (doesn't always zero out and must be manually calibrated over and over), the unit itself is great. Sounds great. Highly recommended. I'm considering trying some of the other compressor options from GAP after this experience.

Unreal results for a $ compressor

By Ben from Astoria, NY
Music Background: Producer, Studio Owner

I've been told about this compressor over and over from a few pro audio friends and didn't really believe the results could be this good. I've used it for vocals and bass so far and I'm getting MUCH better results than I did from my old WA2A. Just get it.

The best tube compressor ever made!

By Loren A. from Los Angeles
Music Background: Play trumpet in junior high school and I like playing guitar.

This is as best tube compressor ever made! I own two and the boost of the tube signal is wonderful! Better than tube compressors costing much more.

Great Value, Great Compressor / Limiter

By Todd Z. from Kalamazoo, MI
Music Background: Reccording Engineer

build quality is excellent and the sound quality outstanding. The unit is dead quiet, and it is easy to dial in the sound you want. Like most LA-2A style compressors, it is typically subtle, although you can fet it to more extreme 'effect' if you so desire. Normally I do not want to ;hear' the compressor working, and this unit is perfect for that. With the front panel bypass it is easy to level match between the original signal andthe compress signal. Golden Age projects make great gear regardless of price, but it is really amazing value for money.

Podcast & Livestreaming

By James K. from Tampa, FL
Music Background: Church Planter

I use this for church livestreaming (as we all had to do in 2020) as well as personal podcasting and I gotta say it sounds fantastic. Improved the audio quality by leaps and bounds. It is paired with an EV-RE20 through a Great River Pre, and this unit goes through the insert. The RE20 mic has a low level signal and I was cranking the preamp all the way to get something serviceable. The compressor gives me the ability to boost the signal way up with definition and clarity that sounds exactly like professional broadcasting. Better than a Cloudlifter imho. It seems sturdily built and I hope it will last a long time. I'm on stock tubes and don't see a need to change them. The only issue is you have to be patient as they are a small company that builds the unit once it is ordered. Took over a month from my initial order to get it. Well worth the wait.

Beautiful

By David H. from Arlington, MA
Music Background: Pianist, Educator, Recording Engineer

I bought this unit specifically for tracking vocals and it has gone beyond my expectations. Truly smooth and uncolored to my ears. I changed out the tubes before I plugged it in for the first time. It's time for a second!

Solid with a Classic Tone

By Joan V. from Illinois
Music Background: Producer/Engineer

I'm using this primarily for Vocals, Guitars and Bass. It has distinctive sonic character less gooey than the Urei LA2A, but tighter which I really like especially in the bass. Perfect for tracking vocals.
