Played a summer and winter full of shows

By Tyler from Philadelphia

This amp was quite surprising for me. I played a whole bunch of shows using this amp and the tones it got were really great. So much better than the spiders and other budget line products from line 6. I'm a huge fan of the use. I would definitely suggest these for my students as well.

Great Sound, Questionable Build Quality

By Sweetwater Customer

There is a lot to like about this amp.

First, the basic clean tone is nice and flexible, and if you need an even flatter response you can totally use the effects loop return with whatever you'd like – I've played around with amp models run from my laptop and (after some tweaking to suit the speaker) it sounds great! Even without all that, the "Boutique" setting is terrific, and I quite the like the "Crunch" as well. Built in effects are decent quality but not quite flexible enough for me (although I do use the reverb reasonably often). Playing along with music through the AUX has been great for getting some of my less musically confident friends to jam, too!

And the power settings on the back make dialing the right volume for your venue a breeze.

But I worry this isn't in it for the long haul. The corner protectors are popping off without much encouragement, even without any hard bumps or rough treatment at the places I've brought it. It might just be the corners only, but it's happening so easily, it makes me uneasy about the quality of the rest of the amp.

If you are buying this play at home and not bring anywhere, I think it's a bargain! Otherwise, you might end up like me and feel like you are looking at replacements way sooner than you expected considering the feature set. Maybe to be expected for the price, I guess.

Right for Me

By Dennis G. from Plymouth Meeting PA
Music Background: Part Time Gigging and Recording Musician

My thoughts on the Catalyst line are that these are the right amps for ME.
I look for a clean fat sound with my Tele and these amps do that for ME.
I use them on the Manual Clean setting only, with pedals in front as desired.
I have A/B'd this amp with Headstrong Lil King Reverb and kept preferring the
Catalyst… I thought I was nuts. So, I did a Blind fold test with a few non-musicians
And every one of them picked the Catalyst. The Tone Masters are nice but pricey
And I'm getting tonally what I need at a much lower price. Will they last forever? No.
But I have no Tubes and maintenance to worry about either. (Tube prices are crazy lately) I've had a 60-watt version for 2 years and it's what I use 97 percent of the time. I just sold the Headstrong (I wasn't really using it) and just received a new a Catalyst 100-Watt version.
I've used the 60-Watt version with an Acoustic guitar player, A jazz band and a Rock
band. No one ever complained about my tone. No regrets.
I hope this helps.

Versatile

By Caleb from New Mexico

I play a lot of genres from Worship to metal, this amp can pull it off

I love the wattage selector on the back so you can play quietly at home and crank up the amp at a gig

Some really nice sounds too, im happy with it

Huge upgrade from my fender front 10W, and thanks Caleb Priest from sweetwafer for the help!

Surprisingly good sound for such an inexpensive amp

By Dave B. from ME

I'm somewhat skeptical of modelers, mostly because most of them are touchy and its often difficult to tweak your sound. A previous unsatisfactory experience with Line 6 (spider valve 2x12) made me hesitant to purchase this amp. But I wanted a physically small and light amp as a backup to my primary performing rig so I took the chance. I was surprised by the sound, in particular the 2204. Its a shame that the midi in the CX60 is usb, its difficult to get to all the effects settings without the catalyst edit software (this may be because of my incomplete review of the manual). I wish there was a bank indicator on the unit as its difficult to know where you're at. Banks are not foot switchable, nor is the boost, but you could program it off/on with A and B stored presets.

Weight is good, sound is good, overall functionality is good. This amp works well as a "grab and go" for rehearsal, open mics and as a backup.

VERY COOL AMP!

By Adam B. from Jonas Ridge, NC
Music Background: Composer, guitarist, Smooth Jazz, Fusion, Blues

I picked this up a couple of months ago and it's my first foray into modeling amp. This amp is seriously versatile and although it's a great plug and play pedal platform - which is how I e been using it until now- getting the Catalyst Edit app opens up really cool stuff. The amp voicings are great, lots of head-room on the cleans, really sweet edge of break-up on the "dynamic" channel and great response to guitar volume and attack; gain and high-gain channels are deeply satisfying and loads of fun with controlled feedback and sizzling pinch harmonics. Just a blast to play!

The one issue I had was the foot pedal which I found very limiting. On engaging the Catalyst Edit app I found I can program the footswitch to do a variety of different things, but still not what I wanted, which was to be able to switch banks on the fly AND be able to switch to manual mode as well. With Catalyst amps tha can only be done with MIDI. Being new to digital amps, and having zero experience with MIDI, I envisioned nightmare programming scenarios and had no idea even where to begin, and neither did my Sweetwater sales guy (who I'll keep nameless here because he's terrific and I don't want even the suggestion of shade on him).

Here's the good news: I found a YouTube video on how set up MIDI on the 60. The video recommended the M-VAVE CHOCOLATE PLUS MIDI controller which I got from a well-known on-line retailer (starts with "A") for $ and it works like a charm. No programming needed, just hooked it up and it was ready to go, all banks and presets lined up perfectly. So, if anyone else is trying to solve the same issue. I highly recommend this little device. It opens up the amp to all its potential, and it's is a GREAT amp! Can't wait to get the 200!

Best value amp out there

By Joel from Brooklyn, NY

The Catalyst cx 60 sounds phenomenal to me. If you're playing jazz, country, pop, rock, you owe it to yourself to give it a shot. At this price it's an insane value.
For 7-string doom metal, just based on all the negative reviews online, look elsewhere. I don't play metal.
The Catalyst takes pedals great, the onboard effects sound really good, it's lightweight, and I love the looks.
Try speaker swapping too for a different flavor. I put a new Jensen C12N 8-ohm in it and it sounds really great.
This is probably the last amp I need to buy, I'm wanting for nothing. Line 6 knows what they're doing.

My favorite guitar amplifier

By Thomas from San Jose, California
Music Background: Retired

I have had my Line 6 Catalyst 60 for two years and it is a great amplifier. The amp is used in my studio for playing, practice and recording. I set it up the day I received it and have not changed the settings. It allows you to record in many different ways and I enjoyed experimenting to find what I liked best. What I enjoy most is the ability to turn on the amplifier and not change the controls to find "the right sound"!

Amazing Amp for the Price

By Mike from Connecticut
Music Background: Musician in local CT. band - VinyCut - playing 60's - 90's Rock N Roll

Cab sounds are great and usable as is for many songs. Feature packed if you want to go down a rabbit hole. Or keep it simple and play with the knobs to get your sound dialed in. You can plug it into a PA or board with XLR output. Also plug a pedal in if you like. And the 60 watts is more than enough for most Bar & even outdoor gigs unless you're playing stadiums but just plug into the soundboard with an XLR. Great meaty sounds and crunch, distortion and clean vibes. Best amp for $ in my humble opinion.

What a cool little box!

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Full time professional.

First, I'm not a Line 6 fanboy. The last products I owned from them before this Catalyst were a POD 2.0, and a Flextone II amp. Neither of which I kept long term.

This amp is a TON of fun. Super easy to use, no menu diving or advanced programming degree required. It's exactly what I was looking for. A way to get my edge of breakup and light breakup basic amp sounds at small restaurant, winery, and pub patio volumes. Even a 15 watt 1x10 tube amp was too loud for those gigs by the time it hit breakup, and anything smaller just didn't have a tone I wanted. The Catalyst doesn't feel exactly the same, but the sounds are great, and those tones are achievable, with a nice full spectrum sound, at volumes that still allow for normal conversation. Which is what's required at these "wallpaper" gigs. The full 60 watt output is also plenty capable of playing full band club dates. Especially if you utilize the direct out to FOH.

Excellent sounds. The Archetype clean is my absolute favorite. Takes traditional pedals up front and in the loop like a champ. Great low end. Loads of punch. I play classic and alternative country, 80's rock and alternative, blues, classic rock, and jam band stuff like Dead, Widespread, and even some Phish. This amp has basic tones that will work for all of it. I stick my pedalboard in front of it, and away we go.

Ease of use was a huge selling point for an old guy who doesn't use computers, but I am looking forward to exploring the Edit app with my phone. I'm going to use it on a few more different kinds of gigs before I make a final decision, but it's quite possible I may also buy the 100 watter for larger applications. With both of them, I'd have power scaling available at 100, 60, 50, 30, and 1/2 watt increments. And it actually works! It's not like tube amp attenuation where you get more breakup and slightly lower volume. The sound stays the same, the volume is moved into a lower bracket. Owning one is like having three different sizes of the same amp. I think if I had them both, I could probably jettison a bunch of other amps and free up a lot of space around here.

Sounds Great. Wyld Stalyns Rule

By Jeffery P. from Baton Rouge
Music Background: Pro singer / guitarist

I have been playing for over 30 years. I have played many different rigs, including tube amps. Most recently I have Used pedals and modelers direct to PA. I wanted a bit more stage volume in a portable unit and after watching several Catalyst reviews I decided to give this a try thinking the worst case the power amp in would accept my Ampero MP100 tones as a powered speaker. I quickly dialed through the amps in manual mode last night after unboxing it and was very impressed with the tone and feel. Honestly its the best and most authentic sounding and feeling modeler setup I've ever played. No not all models in it are my thing but I quickly found crunch 1 to be perfect. Does not feel or respond "digital" feels and sounds thick and tube like. Effects seem good too. Takes my phone or pc tethered with a usb to deep dive into them which I will but basic effects level can be adjusted on a broad basis through amp controls. I also like that I can change the footswitch configuration through the app and emulated xlr out with various mic and cabinet options are terrific features for this price point. All that said some top notch tones are the real selling point. The only thing I would improve is the footswitch capability. Although it has many customizable options a third channel capability and maybe another effect toggle would be ideal for me. This can be done with a midi controller but I don't want to have to configure all that really. The 60w version I got is portable and loud enough to gig as it'll be mic'd up or direct through PA anyway. Thank You Line 6!
