Outstanding mic at a great price!
I am a home recorder, and professional guitarist/vocalist. I want to get back to more writing and recording so I picked up several studio type large condenser microphones. Of course, one of the first things I did was compare them to see if the performance of each was worth the cost. This is not the first AKG 414 I have owned, so I was at least basically familiar with them. The other mics were also phantom powered, and I set them to the same pattern, height, etc for the closest apples to apples comparison I could get. At first listen, results were a bit all over the place... needed to balance gains to get an even volume level. Once done, results weren't terribly surprising, but might not be as immediately apparent as I expected. They all sounded good!
What the AKG C414 XLII shines on is a very clear yet warm sound, with a lot of variation in the air around a source just by varying distance. It doesn't get less clear, it get a bit more transparent... the closer sources sound closer. Very easy to get that brain-image of physical distance going by the sound. While all mics sounded good, this mic gave the best feel of space (even up close). I won't muddy up the review with the other mics (everyone has their faves) but will just say one is a very popular mic, and one is a lesser known copy of a world renowned mic. Mt point is that the quality of the C414 still stands up well to comparison, and to my ear has a very honest and pleasant representation of the source... which is exactly what I want.
Very happy with my purchase, and the deal made with me on it by my Sweetwater sales rep Chris.
