Behringer Poly D Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer
Behringer Poly D Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer Reviews
The first truly portable analog synthesizer was released in 1971. Although it was rather pricey and could be temperamental, keyboard heavies of the era were quick to embrace it; and in the ensuing decades, its celebrated sounds graced countless concerts, records, and film scores. Now Sweetwater is excited to present to you Behringer’s homage to that iconic monosynth, and there are some exciting surprises waiting for all synthesists who have been aching to get their hands on one of these legendary synths. First off, the Behringer Poly D packs four voices of polyphony — instead of one — inside its classic, 37-key wood-trimmed chassis; and second — it is amazingly affordable! Otherwise, it packs all the features of the original — and then some.
My first synthesizer
This is my first synth and saying I'm happy with it doesn't even come close to describing how much enjoyment this synth brings me. If you have basic knowledge on synthesizers or not this one is still a breeze to set up, use, and enjoy as well as is affordable and worth every bit. Thank you Sweetwater team!
Do not delay buy TODAY
Had a mini-moog in the early 80's and sold it ,regretfully, now years later I heard about this and picked one up and it does not disapoint
Sounds just like or at times even better than my old one, and has more features . Hours have been joyfully spent recreating my old patches from years ago. Thanks to Uli for making this and more importantly making this affordable
Do not hesitate and get one, you will be glad you did
A classic synth. But better.
Always wanted a Minimoog but balked at the price. This is not only close enough, but spot on. And extras (like an extra oscillator and a sequencer/arpeggiator) to boot.
Excellent value.
What's not to like?
Poly Awesome
Old school, for sure, but updated and amazingly powerful. I absolutely love the Poly D. Absolutely.
Poly D = Fun Machine
I can't say enough good about this wonderful synthesizer. I have had the most wonderful time with it so far I'm learning so many new things about it as I explore, and I love the classic Moog sounds it produces. As a genuine Moog Model D is a little bit out of my price range. This produces the same quality sounds for a lot less. I just love this machine. I spend hours at a time playing with the sequencer and producing really unique sounds and it fits in with all my other instruments that I can combine with it for a very unique musical experiences. The poly D is well built looks beautiful with its wood frame. Overall, a very quality instrument, and I am very pleased with it's performance 100%
Favorite synth and maybe my favorite bass too
Im primarily a bass guitar player. Although a lot of my favorite bass lines are actually done on the Model D. So, I got one. Not disappointed. Sold most of my bass guitar synth pedals, which I was buying to try and chase that sound, but it never worked. So went to the source. Perfect. As for the instrument it self.... one key was wonky from the get go, but after years it has not gotten worse. I can live with it.
A Cool Instrument
I just got the Poly D, and it's definitely a lot of fun to play. It takes a while to figure things out though. I'm a guy, so of course I don't need the manual, lol. The manual is a bit confusing being it's in a zillion languages. Anyway, I would suggest going on YouTube and watch as many videos you can.
This has a ton of old ELP sounds, and some Rick Wakeman sounds. For the price, you definitely can't go wrong. But watch as many YouTube videos as you can. You'll pick up a lot of knowledge there.
Poly D Synthesizer
Love my new synthesize! Working great! Thanks
Not my cup of tea but it’s probably just me…
I ordered the Poly-D with the idea that I would be able to make music with it but, my impatience and lack of knowledge prevented that from working out. I found the key response to be inconsistent but that may be a result of my incompetence. I realize I need something like a Roland D6 so special thank you to the staff at Sweetwater!
My Intro to Synths
My intro to synthesizers began when I bought the Walter/Wendy Carlos Album, "Switched On Bach" in 1968 then"The Well-Tempered Clavier" in 1969. Being able to buy this Moog inspired "Poly D Keyboard Synth" is a 5-Star Event for me and made even better with its amazing price. The unit is heavy and solidly built and it's been a "blast" playing it and learning. Thanks, as always, to Adam Chesi for his assistance.
The perfect synth
Let's be honest, it's the affordable Mini Moog, while maintaining the same exact sounds. Behringer really gave what every artist wants in an affordable package. So far I haven't had a single problem with this synth. Does exactly as it is supposed and I haven't even scratched the surface of everything I hope to with it. The sequencer is easy to use and the distortion and chorus are great built in features.
Near flawless synth
This synth is incredible! I've been wanting a Minimoog for a long time now, and this fills the roll perfectly. The extra oscillator adds a really unique tone to it as well! I personally think this is better than the Minimoog.
My only complaint is the polyphonic mode isn't my favorite. I dont think it sounds good. Now, I could just not be using it enough, therefore I don't exactly know what I'm doing. But the mono setting is spectacular!! This definitely worth the money
No disappointment
From the time I opened the box until now, this board has not disappointed in any sense all the expectations were met and over the original it stays in tune. The extras only add to the enjoyment of every keystone and know turn to produce tones that perform even complex sounds to leads that cut through like a well sharpened steak knife.
bass monster
This is my first analog synth and It finds its way onto every beat I produce
Mini Moog on Steroids
Poor Man’s Moog
I'm an amateur keyboard enthusiast and now feel like a rockstar. In one sitting, I could already recreate many of the sounds from the 70s rock hits. With the warranty offered from Sweetwater, I did not feel intimidated for repair or maintenance expenses which might have a deterred my purchase decision. It's compact, well designed, and well made. The possibilities are endless in recreating the 70s or exploring the Millennium styles. This instrument empowers the musician by just sounding impressive in every note.
Welcome Back My Friends!
I grew up dreaming of owning a Minimoog. This has proven to be every bit as good. Shipping and contact was excellent. Great company to deal with
Not quite
I am a professional, this is interesting, the tone is not the same. Maybe an untrained ear will think it is a Moog. But actually not even close. The moog tone is bigger, more raw, and cuts way harder. This has the same controls but the depth of tone is weak. It is a cool keyboard.
For example, on a mini moog every sounds blasts into the mix, with this, no matter how you tweak it , it just sounds ok, not even that great. I wouldn't use it professionally. It's a copy, not real, don't fool yourself.
Even better than I thought!
Before I bought the Poly D watched all the videos and pretty much knew what I was getting into. This is not a polyphonic synth it's more of what I'd call "Mono Plus" or "Limited Polyphony"….(which is not a bad thing at all). I have to say I've really just been blown away at the versatility of this thing and the amazing sound. From patching into the overdrive circuit to the sequencing, to the various chorus and distortion capabilities…. It's a really fun & useful piece of kit. Well done Behringer!!!
great buy
Works great and I love the sequencer
I use it with my Kronos and my Nord Stage
Wow. Just. Wow!
Such a beautifully made replica (and more) instrument I have before me. How Behringer made this welcomed modern four oscillating beauty at this price, is beyond me. SOUND? You know that Cheshire Cat earlobe to earlobe grin you get as soon as you hear THAT SOUND? Yeah. Love this thing. Only sorry I was late to the party.
Incredible Syntheiszer!
I bought this as my first synthesizer and I have been loving it! It makes very rich sounds, and just sounds amazing. Even just the way it looks is great. They did a good job with the homage to the minimoog. It's honestly such a great synth and very much a good option if you're looking for a synthesizer on a budget.
Fun fun fun
Guitar player my whole life and have always been interested in synths. So much fun and great quality. Thanks Kurt!
The (almost)perfect Minimoog clone
Awesome gear
We live in great times when it comes to synthesizers. I would give this 10 stars if I could. What a great sounding piece of gear. It's a must have for the price. Don't sleep on it! Grab it while u can.
Well made instrument
You be hard pressed to find a better monosynth. The build quality is impressive. It looks gorgeous and it sounds like a quality instrument. Yes you can get huge sounds from it but you can get delicate sounds. It has no presets it has no normal. Sounds like pianos are organs. It's just a synthesizer and the power cord is lousy. But really, I'm blown away by the quality this instrument. It's tremendous
poly d
love it!! gave up years ago on ever getting a minimoog. actually other than multiple theremin guess i cant afford moog lol. not a huge behringer fan i'll admit....that all changed with this !!! excellent build quality, everything solid and tight. sure its not polyphonic, guess that's a major gripe, being called "poly" d. closest i"ll ever get to a minimoog and at about 1/10 the price, come on!! think i"m gonna have to have another one!! haha like a budget Rick Wakeman!! you really cant go wrong with this, if its an old school anolog vibe you're digging then this will scrath that itch for sure!!! shipped fast as always, satisfies yer g.a.s.for awhile too!!!thanks Uli and thanks Sweetwater!!! and....release.
FunkaPhonics
This thing is absolutely amazing, so many funky sounds you can make with this! Not too hard to learn either.
As an elitist, I had doubts...
Minimoog and so much more!
I've wanted a Minimoog sine "A Farewell to Kings". When my garage band talked about the big time, we always talked about my playing a Minimoog. Now, years later, I buy this. No regrets! Paraphony or monophonic, built in distortion, extra oscillator, built in chorus, midi, a sequencer built in, a hold function... a sound that's fat and versatile - unbelievable! I play this and my Behringer Odyssey almost every day - and I'm a guitar player! If you've got the budget, it's a no brainer! In one year, I've purchased a 2600, an Odyssey and a Minimoog (poly D). It just doesn't get any better than this! User note - let the analog synths warm up for a few minutes before you play them - this keeps the annoying tuning drift to a minimum!
The Beringer poly d is the best synthesizer I have ever bought thank you so much for it I.m
It's great
Get your vintage synth vibe going!
Being a fan of Pink Floyd and other classic synth music, I fell in love with this one. Any vintage sound you want, great interface that's easy to learn, and positively thunderous, roaring synth bass tones! There keybed isn't as dreamy as my Sledge, but it is surprisingly playable for it's size and has aftertouch. Cool onboard effects you be wouldn't have had on an old mini Moog, midi, and a decent selection of patching (one thing my Sledge doesn't have). Super fun board, much recommended!
All I wanted and more...
Was great while it worked!
Behringer is a very mixed company. They make decent products for a really good price. But you know what they say... you pay for what you get! The mod wheel on my Poly D stopped working almost 3 months in. Very thin sounding. Also its NOT POLYPHONIC its PARAPHONIC, which is a HUGE difference. Very disappointed. Going to have it repaired and then sell it.
So Glad I Grabbed This!
Look-everyone knows where the inspiration for this thing came from. (Um....just look at it.) I could never justify the price of an original but I don't need to because this thing gets the job done. The sequencer/chorus/distortion are all bonuses.
Pro tip-use balanced (TRS) 1/4" cables for a better output level. Bring on the UBX-A!
Love it !!
This is a great keyboard for the money. Real wood and metal, plus super fat, rich sounds.
There are plenty of ins and outs to play with. It even has the 5pin midi jacks so I can connect to some of my older equipment. I've been playing all my life (I'm 74 now) so some of my equipment doesn't even have midi. Anyway, it's a great little lead synth.
P.S. Sweetwater is a pleasure to deal with.
Love It
So. I never had much faith in Behringer but I love this synth. I've been playing with it for about a year now and I know it's capable of more than what I do with it but for what I wanted it's perfect. Switching between mono synth and poly synth is awesome. Does it have the best synth sound in the world? Maybe not. Does it work and make for a great live or recording tool? Yes. It's pretty durable and I love the materials it's built from. Feels robust and I think it's pretty to look at. Below you can hear it featured in a short song. I feel it's worth every dollar.
Just like my old "D"
I'm not an analogue purist so to me the Behringer Poly D is just like my old "D" but with awesome modern enchantments. At the price point it's well worth it IMHO. It is surprisingly heavy but compered to soft synths and table tops the furniture really brings back the original vibe.
Poly D
Perfect for what I need.
You can't really do better
Amazing Sound, Questionable Keybed
I was hooked off the first note I played. It has such a great organic sound, and is easily manipulated to get exactly what you're looking for. The only downside when it comes to this synth is the keybed. Honestly it feels worse than a $ MIDI keybed, luckily I play it through my Korg Prologue 8's keybed.
Those sweet minimoog sounds
Behringer kept faithful to the original minimoog while keeping it cheaper for us with normal sized wallets. Don't get confused: it's not a true polyphonic synth. It plays 1 note per oscillator. That means any chords you play will have a maximum of 4 notes at a time. The sequencer is probably the best addition and can be sent out via midi cable to use with anything.
Thing is heavy and large. Don't expect cheap quality just because it says Behringer.
However, the mechanism that holds the module up in the back could use a redesign. Its only a solid metal plate that allows the module to rest on top and does not lock it into place. Other than that, it's near perfect.
It goes beyond the minimoog in a few ways
KILLER!
Tes killer. I should know!I bought a MiniMoog in 1971...used. Used for for a few months. lol I did not even play keys.lol I was the guitarist in a Prog Rock band Tallis in London UK and we needed one. We already had 2 Mellotrons.
I taught myself to program it.In the late 70's my gig was teaching others to program the mini and the Arp Odyssey. In the 80's I taught MIDI/sequencing etc.
I went back to the guitar as my main gig with a power trio doing a Prog Rock/Metal thing.I was shocked to see this unit. The old sound is still there and the price tells me I should get one and use it in my band.
Poly D
I have owned over 7 minimoogs, 2 moog sources, 1 memory moog, moog satilites and a poly moog. The poly D stacks up quite nicely and can be made to sound EXACTLY like a mini in 98% of the time. Those whom rated this badly are making ridiculous claims. Best $... I ever spent. By the way, I never
Paid more than $700 for a real mini moog. Thank you behringer. Think I'll order 4 more
Very cool synth
So...I grew up with a first generation ARP Odyssey synth (1970-something). I even bought one of the 3/4 size reissues a couple of years ago (not Behringer)... and it faithfully reproduces all the cool old ARP sounds. This Poly D blows it out of the water for variety of sound, response and ease of getting around on. It reminds me a great deal of the old Moog synths... and of course it looks a lot like one too... Now I never owned an original Moog so I can't really compare the operation... but I can compare the sound from listening to my old albums, and the Poly D comes REAL close... and it does a whole bunch more... for about 1/3 the price I paid for my original ARP!
You Get What You Pay For...
I once owned a minimoog and in my opinion this one is far away from the original, in so many dimensions. In one word... regret.
For the money I really can't complain
Bought this when it first came out this year, I'm happy to see the price drop because that mean more people will have this amazing instrument. The only thing I wish was different is the 32 step sequencer, I'd rather have 64 steps and half of the save slots. But that's just my preference! Also if you want to have another synth control the midi clock you have to change this in the midi setting with a computer.
Moog or no Moog, maybe...
Great
Simply love it
Worth the wreck less purchase.
I bought this synth purely on impulse. I have wanted a poly synth for a long time, and this is the most affordable one I've seen. I don't regret it in the slightest. This thing is a beast. It plays well with others. I have a MS20 and a Behringer Neutron at home, and it works together well with them. (I midi connect those two with the POLY D as the controller, and then run the neutron into the MS20's external audio source, and run both those synths into the POLY D's external audio source for a massive synth rig). The sequencer works without a hitch, and the keyboard feels great on it. The built in distortion is wonky compared to the distortion on the neutron, but the chorus is a crazy addition and sounds great. Totally would recommend for a great addition to a synth rig for a classic sound.
Good Build for a Great Synth
This is what I’ve needed my whole life.
Behringer Poly D
Very surprised at the overall structure and weight of the Poly.
All of the buttons switches are solid, as very well built unit .The sounds are very pleasing, and to play more than one note at a time on a synth at this price is great. I also own the Mini Moog.
Fabulous synth
Incredible synth for the money. I read a review saying the polyphony is messed up - it's not. You have to set each of the oscillators to the same octave for it to work like a traditional poly-synth with four voices). Each voice runs on one of the 4 fully analog oscillators. Can't believe the tone I'm getting from a $... synth. Model D without spending an arm and a leg. Also, no issues with this being quiet - don't understand why this would be an issue anyway. That's what mixing's for! I'll buy a new mixing desk with the $5,000 I saved buying this and move the fade up a couple dB... also the build feels solid. Love having a polyphonic model D in my studio. Big source of inspiration.
Worth every penny
Poly mode is rubbish, but dang this thing feels/looks and sounds vintage. Some of the oscillator octave switch pots felt loose. Accent click on osc or filter. No owner's manual or literature. Still totally worth every penny.
Halfway decent
Keys feel cheap, whole keyboard and design feel like a toy. Butttttttttt, sounds ok if you have something to process the signal. When ran through my compressor and limiter it sounds ok. I don't have the low signal issue other people are experiencing. So I'd say it's ok. It's a good intro synth. A good (not great) recreation of an old synth. So there's no modern parameters. Only midi and added effects. I'd say, don't expect this to change uuur life
Behringer Poly D rocks!
I have no complaints whatsoever. The Poly D is beautiful and performs just as described. However, if you have different waveforms selected for each of the four oscillators, you might get some strange sounds; however, I use the same waveform for all four oscillators when in "Poly" or "Unison" mode and that solves the "erratic" sounding problem. That's what I discovered. The chorus feature is great! Also, I play my Poly D through a T.C. Electronic Hall-of-Fame 2 and a T.C. Electronic Flashback II, and it sounds Heavenly. I love the aftertouch out also for controlling other keyboards with aftertouch ability. NOW, I can't wait to get my hands on the forthcoming MonoPoly by Behringer. AND, if Behringer decides to release their version of the ARP 2600, I would truly be in Heaven!
Glad i Made This Purchase
I was a little skeptical about buying this but I'm so glad I did !I've always wanted a mini moog model D($5000) and this as close as I'm gonna get to getting one. The bass sounds you can get is worth it alone in my opinion. I've seen a lot of complaints about people not liking the model D but I'm not one of those people.
Does it sound like a mini moog? Honestly, I don't know, I've never personally never touched one or compared the two. All I do know is it sounds fat, has deep bass and you can also get some nice ambient pads with little effects from your daw or guitar pedals and that chorus!!!!!
Poly D manual states it has a max output level of -16 dBu, compared to 0dBu of the rack mount mono version. Noise issues. Thin sound.
I waited since November to get this and was severely disappointed. When I first plugged it in, I was surprised by how quiet and hissy it was - even with the levels maxed out. In order to get the levels up to a useful level, the noise floor is raised and unbearable. This means you essentially have no room. This might be fine for a bedroom musician, but it isn't useful for recording or playing through a decent sound system. According to the manual, the max output level is -16 dBu, compared to their own Model D rackmount version of 0 dBu. Starsky Carr discovers this issue in his near hour-long review of this synth. Either stick with the Behringer Model D rackmount mono version - or save up and get a Moog Matriarch if you need 4 Moog style oscillators.
To be honest, I’m having Fun.
The more I play it, the more I like it. It's not a moog or full polyphonic, but if you want a monophonic analog synthesizer built solid with a full size a keyboard, its worth it too me.
I own a minitaur and sub Phatty and they don't sound like the original Minimoog either. But I like that, it's different in a good way.
It's not perfect. You need to give it gain and you can't save patches. If you can live with that, it's an awesome instrument.
Absurdly Beautiful and Inspiring at This Price Point
Very good build quality....at least cosmetically. Too soon to know with the electronics. The sounds are remarkably rich; just so heavy and beautiful. Once I got the controls worked out I literally jumped from amazing tone to amazing tone. One after another; pads, soft buttery lead tones. No patch memory....oh lord how I wished there was a patch memory bank! I've read the beefs people have with these on the usual suspect forums; I've detected none of these issues. Of course, I like to make tracks; not fiddle with gear to find faults. So your mileage may vary. For me, this is a wellspring of inspiring and sublime tone.
It looks nice but doesn't sound nice.
I was really excited to get this because the rackmount monophonic Behringer Model D sounds fantastic. This instrument, however, is vastly different than their rackmount Model D. First, the overall output of this instrument is far too low. By the time you gain stage properly at the mixer or interface, you have a very high noise floor. Second, the envelopes are too clicky. Even with a slightly slower attack time, you get a loud click and pop that goes thought the audio signal. Third, even after all that, the oscillators don't have the same bite and aggressiveness as the rackmount Behringer Model D. On a positive note, the external build quality is nice and impressive. Unfortunately, the sound engine does not live up to the hype.
I'm in Love.
I just cried tears of joys.
