Behringer Poly D Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer Reviews

37-key Analog 4-Voice Paraphonic Synthesizer with Full-size Keys, 4 VCOs, Classic Ladder Filter, LFO, BBD Stereo Chorus, Distortion, 32-step Sequencer, and Arpeggiator

The first truly portable analog synthesizer was released in 1971. Although it was rather pricey and could be temperamental, keyboard heavies of the era were quick to embrace it; and in the ensuing decades, its celebrated sounds graced countless concerts, records, and film scores. Now Sweetwater is excited to present to you Behringer’s homage to that iconic monosynth, and there are some exciting surprises waiting for all synthesists who have been aching to get their hands on one of these legendary synths. First off, the Behringer Poly D packs four voices of polyphony — instead of one — inside its classic, 37-key wood-trimmed chassis; and second — it is amazingly affordable! Otherwise, it packs all the features of the original — and then some.

Behringer is beating the major brands

By Sweetwater Customer from TX

I had a Behringer Poly D. It is built very solid and was capable of the Moog Model D sounds plus plus additional capabilities. At some point, due to financial issues, I had to sell it. Later, I replaced it with a Moog Matriarch. The Moog is great and has a lot of extras that the Plot D doesn't, but of course, it costs more than twice as much. Being a Moog and given the price, I assumed everything about it would be as good/superior to the Poly D. But I was wrong. The Behringer Poly D as a midi controller keyboard was hands down the best, most perfect controller keyboard I've ever had. The velocity curve and after touch were perfect. The Moog Matriarch has some kind of issue with the velocity curve, rendering it useless as a controller. The slightest touch will give full velocity. There are 4 velocity curves to choose from, but I dare you to tell the difference between them. Behringer is outdoing major brand keyboards at more than twice the price.

My first synthesizer

By Santiago D. from Buckeye, AZ
Music Background: Learning/Self-taught musician & producer.

This is my first synth and saying I'm happy with it doesn't even come close to describing how much enjoyment this synth brings me. If you have basic knowledge on synthesizers or not this one is still a breeze to set up, use, and enjoy as well as is affordable and worth every bit. Thank you Sweetwater team!

Do not delay buy TODAY

By Tone M. from Alexandria Va.
Music Background: Bassist, Synth player

Had a mini-moog in the early 80's and sold it ,regretfully, now years later I heard about this and picked one up and it does not disapoint

Sounds just like or at times even better than my old one, and has more features . Hours have been joyfully spent recreating my old patches from years ago. Thanks to Uli for making this and more importantly making this affordable

Do not hesitate and get one, you will be glad you did

A classic synth. But better.

By Mike G. from Canada
Music Background: Serious synth hobbyist/amateur composer ( 5 albums unpublished)

Always wanted a Minimoog but balked at the price. This is not only close enough, but spot on. And extras (like an extra oscillator and a sequencer/arpeggiator) to boot.

Excellent value.

What's not to like?

Poly D = Fun Machine

By William from Towson Md
Music Background: 53 years as musician 5 years with synthesis

I can't say enough good about this wonderful synthesizer. I have had the most wonderful time with it so far I'm learning so many new things about it as I explore, and I love the classic Moog sounds it produces. As a genuine Moog Model D is a little bit out of my price range. This produces the same quality sounds for a lot less. I just love this machine. I spend hours at a time playing with the sequencer and producing really unique sounds and it fits in with all my other instruments that I can combine with it for a very unique musical experiences. The poly D is well built looks beautiful with its wood frame. Overall, a very quality instrument, and I am very pleased with it's performance 100%

Favorite synth and maybe my favorite bass too

By david z. from Westland, MI

Im primarily a bass guitar player. Although a lot of my favorite bass lines are actually done on the Model D. So, I got one. Not disappointed. Sold most of my bass guitar synth pedals, which I was buying to try and chase that sound, but it never worked. So went to the source. Perfect. As for the instrument it self.... one key was wonky from the get go, but after years it has not gotten worse. I can live with it.

A Cool Instrument

By Joeykeyz from Concord, NH
Music Background: I’ve been playing the keyboards for 60 years.

I just got the Poly D, and it's definitely a lot of fun to play. It takes a while to figure things out though. I'm a guy, so of course I don't need the manual, lol. The manual is a bit confusing being it's in a zillion languages. Anyway, I would suggest going on YouTube and watch as many videos you can.
This has a ton of old ELP sounds, and some Rick Wakeman sounds. For the price, you definitely can't go wrong. But watch as many YouTube videos as you can. You'll pick up a lot of knowledge there.

Not my cup of tea but it’s probably just me…

By Kevin from Eureka
Music Background: Guitar, Bass, Keys, Sound, Recording

I ordered the Poly-D with the idea that I would be able to make music with it but, my impatience and lack of knowledge prevented that from working out. I found the key response to be inconsistent but that may be a result of my incompetence. I realize I need something like a Roland D6 so special thank you to the staff at Sweetwater!

My Intro to Synths

By Bob G. from Greer, SC
Music Background: Former Professional Symphony Orchestra and AFofM Freelance Trombonist and Homestudioguy

My intro to synthesizers began when I bought the Walter/Wendy Carlos Album, "Switched On Bach" in 1968 then"The Well-Tempered Clavier" in 1969. Being able to buy this Moog inspired "Poly D Keyboard Synth" is a 5-Star Event for me and made even better with its amazing price. The unit is heavy and solidly built and it's been a "blast" playing it and learning. Thanks, as always, to Adam Chesi for his assistance.

The perfect synth

By Zachary B. from Ann Arbor, MI

Let's be honest, it's the affordable Mini Moog, while maintaining the same exact sounds. Behringer really gave what every artist wants in an affordable package. So far I haven't had a single problem with this synth. Does exactly as it is supposed and I haven't even scratched the surface of everything I hope to with it. The sequencer is easy to use and the distortion and chorus are great built in features.

Near flawless synth

By Sam B. from Taylorsville Ky

This synth is incredible! I've been wanting a Minimoog for a long time now, and this fills the roll perfectly. The extra oscillator adds a really unique tone to it as well! I personally think this is better than the Minimoog.

My only complaint is the polyphonic mode isn't my favorite. I dont think it sounds good. Now, I could just not be using it enough, therefore I don't exactly know what I'm doing. But the mono setting is spectacular!! This definitely worth the money

No disappointment

By Sweetwater Customer

From the time I opened the box until now, this board has not disappointed in any sense all the expectations were met and over the original it stays in tune. The extras only add to the enjoyment of every keystone and know turn to produce tones that perform even complex sounds to leads that cut through like a well sharpened steak knife.

Dreams do come true

By Stoney B.

Ever since I started listening to DEVO, Pink Floyd, Rush and others, I've dreamed of recreating the synth leads, solos and other sounds that were created using the iconic Minimoog. However I could never justify paying $ for the official reissue, and I was far from the only one. I dreamed of owning an Minimoog that was actually affordable and hoped and prayed for SOMEONE to recognize the demand for affordable Analog Synths, and it was Behringer who answered the call.
Uli recognized the demand for and it resulted in this miracle of a synth.
The Poly D is the synth that I've been dreaming of for the last 8 years, a synth that can do everything the Minimoog can do and more.

I've been able to recreate all of my favorite patches from my favorite songs and I've tried out the patches from the original Minimoog patch book from the 70's and they've all worked for me. Believe me when I say it, the Poly D is a Minimoog from another mother. If you want the sounds of the Minimoog but don't want to pay 5 grand for the reissue and you're not a fan of software VST's or the other "Affordable" synths from Moog then look no further than the Behringer Poly D.

Mini Moog on Steroids

By Floyd O. from GREENVILLE, SC
Music Background: Synthesizer owner and programmer since 1972

Let me preface by stating that I have owned and been programming Synthesizers since 1972, starting with ARP's 2500 and then my own 2 ARP 2600's, my Mini Moog among so many others through the 1980's.

I also knew Bob Moog from being a Recording Engineer and Studio Owner. I'd see and talk to him on many occasions at the AES Convention or at several Studios in NYC. He was a wonderful man. The Mini Moog was truly his pride and joy and I loved my Mini Moog as well. However, it was plagued with issues, like tuning instability due to the components that were available at the time, a wonky keyboard that needed to have the contacts cleaned often (Bob gave me many tips on this) but I still lovedit. Anyway I ultimately sold off my Studio and all of my gear including my Synths (for very good prices) in the early 1990's.

Fast Forward, in January of 2021 I decided I wanted to relive my Recording Studio and Synthesizer years and started building a small Music Production Studio in our home's Music Room to compliment my Gretsch Drums and Fender Guitars/Bass. Well it has grown quite a bit with Synths from Korg, Roland Boutiques, Moog Matriarch and most of Behringer's "Clones" (K-2, Pro 1, Model D, CAT, Wasp, CRAVE) and a few others.
I love the Model D and it truly mimics my original Mini Moog. I've been looking at the Poly D for quite a while now and my wife told me I should buy it (I've got a great wife).

Review: It is everything I had thought it would be. It's a Mini Moog on Steroids. The Build Quality is excellent! The Knobs and Switches are solid. The 4 Oscillators make it such a rich and full sounding Synth, whether in Mono 4 Voice, Unison or Paraphonic. It just sounds amazing. I can get all of my Original Mini Moog Patches to sound like they did in 1972 and also so much more sonically. I actually like playing it in MONO Mode for its full 4 Voice rich sound. The Choruses are a delight, the Sequencer, just like the CRAVE is so easy to use, especially with the Synthtribe App. The keyboard has a nice feel. And of course, unlike my Original Mini Moog this Poly D has MIDI In, Out and Thru, USB, SYNC IN/Outs, Control Voltage Inputs, Keyboard Control Inputs, an Arpeggiator and Sequencer.

So what should I caution you about, not much. Just remember it is NOT Polyphonic IT IS Paraphonic. Playing Paraphoically takes some getting use to as the notes don't always play where you think they will (similar to my Moog Matriarch).

Some people have complained that the Output Level is low, well it is lower than my other Synthesizers but that is due to the Paraphonic 4 Oscillators playing at the same time to avoid overloading them. This is not an issue for my as the Poly D feeds into my Tascam Mixer and the Preamps have plenty of gain.

Out of the box the Synth is set up with the Keyboard Velocity set to Dynamic and the Threshold at 96 which can give a weird accent while playing fast (over 96). This can be confusing so it's best to set it up in Synthtribe to Velocity set to Constant and the Threshold to something like 52.
Bottom line, I can afford to buy the Mini Moog that Moog is currently producing but WHY, when I can own the Poly D. It's a wonderful Synthesizer, rich in sound, full of features and just a pleasure to play.
Get one, you won't be disappointed!

Nice Monophonic Analog Synth

By Howie F. from PA
Music Background: Experienced

The Behringer Poly D analog synthesizer is basically a mono synth packaged as a multi-function instrument. It comes with a poly mode that assigns one of up to four notes to individual oscillators; and a paraphonic mode. Forget the paraphonic mode (unison); it steals notes and is mostly unusable. The poly mode is limited, and I haven't found it to produce interesting sounds. You could do better with other synths if you want to play chords.

The monophonic mode is at the heart of this synth. It produces fat, textured sounds based on your programming creativity or outside sourcing of available patch diagrams. I find myself starting with an idea, applying my knowledge of waveform and filter concepts, and experimenting to tailor my sound to that which I had planned. Most of the time, I end up with something completely different, and I quickly reach for a blank patch sheet to record the settings and strain to find a name for this sound.

It's a fun instrument and offers flexibility to sculpt sounds you didn't think you had in you. My one frustration is the lack of preexisting patches in the market as starting points, but it's pushed me up the learning curve. I wasn't a programming guy and was perfectly happy to use a synth with good presets.

The build is solid, but it's not wide, so make sure your stand can handle its width.

I'm having a ball discovering new sounds, and shaping sounds from the past that reminds me of classics I enjoyed when I had hair and girlfriends.

Incredible Fundamental Tool!

By Dwayne C.

I've always heard how the MiniMoog is an indispensable workhouse for creating/expressing ideas. The Poly D seems like a great, cost effective substitute.

I just received my Poly D this week and have already grown attached to it!

The fidelity of the OSCs and Filter are so much better than any of my VAs. The build quality is outstanding, this synth could easily be an heirloom. It's heavy, sturdy and the controls all feel rock solid. LEDs. are bright and colorful, keybed feels great to my hands. Wheels are super strong and the backlighting is very helpful.

My only criticisms are that increasing the emphasis/resonance greatly decreases the low end output. Normal for true analog? Second gripe is the lack of a delay or reverb effect. I think this would be much more useful than the included distortion effect.

Otherwise this synth looks, feels and sounds beautiful. Get one!

Poor Man’s Moog

By Sinan from Los Angeles
Music Background: Influenced by Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, John Lord, Richard Jones, Chick Corea, Jimmy Smith, Oscar Peterson

I'm an amateur keyboard enthusiast and now feel like a rockstar. In one sitting, I could already recreate many of the sounds from the 70s rock hits. With the warranty offered from Sweetwater, I did not feel intimidated for repair or maintenance expenses which might have a deterred my purchase decision. It's compact, well designed, and well made. The possibilities are endless in recreating the 70s or exploring the Millennium styles. This instrument empowers the musician by just sounding impressive in every note.

Not quite

By Todd t.
Music Background: Producer

I am a professional, this is interesting, the tone is not the same. Maybe an untrained ear will think it is a Moog. But actually not even close. The moog tone is bigger, more raw, and cuts way harder. This has the same controls but the depth of tone is weak. It is a cool keyboard.

For example, on a mini moog every sounds blasts into the mix, with this, no matter how you tweak it , it just sounds ok, not even that great. I wouldn't use it professionally. It's a copy, not real, don't fool yourself.

Even better than I thought!

By Sweetwater Customer

Before I bought the Poly D watched all the videos and pretty much knew what I was getting into. This is not a polyphonic synth it's more of what I'd call "Mono Plus" or "Limited Polyphony"….(which is not a bad thing at all). I have to say I've really just been blown away at the versatility of this thing and the amazing sound. From patching into the overdrive circuit to the sequencing, to the various chorus and distortion capabilities…. It's a really fun & useful piece of kit. Well done Behringer!!!

By Austin S. from MN

I bought this as my first synthesizer and I have been loving it! It makes very rich sounds, and just sounds amazing. Even just the way it looks is great. They did a good job with the homage to the minimoog. It's honestly such a great synth and very much a good option if you're looking for a synthesizer on a budget.

Fantastic quality! Beyond what I expected!

By Daniel L. from PLANO, TX

Don't hesitate to buy this synth. You will have fun with the Moog sounds that are spot on. You will learn this machine even as a newbie within a few hours. Before you know it you will be making familiar sounds from famous artists. After you do this you will discover the Sequencer. The Sequencer for entertain you for hours on end. I bought this for a straight up Moog clone and got more than I could ever want. This synth is built like a tank. Its made out of Metal and wood instead of plastic. The keyboard is very quality and spot on comfortable feel. This thing even has aftertouch and a 4th Oscillator!! Why spend $ on a something that has been made for 53 years and should cost no more than $ when you can spend something that has the build quality of a solid Moog and provides more for only $ !! (on sale) What do you have to lose for $ ???!! Buy one for yourself and stop being a skeptic like I was.

The (almost)perfect Minimoog clone

By Hayden A. from LYNDONVILLE, NY
Music Background: Music Student, Bassist, New to Synths

Had some issues receiving it due to FedEx being FedEx, but once I finally got it, oh boy. I'm normally a bassist, but I have had a recent fascination with synths and decided to channel my inner Geddy Lee and buy the closest thing I could get to a Minimoog without spending $5,000. When I discovered what Behringer was doing with making these old clones of vintage synths, I was sold immediately. Now that I've had some time to play with the Poly D, I have to say that it sounds almost identical to the Minimoog(If you want a good comparison of how it sounds versus a Minimoog, watch Starsky Carr's video on Youtube), especially the filter.
It is very well built for the price, being made from mostly metal and wood(yes, real wood) and little plastic. The sequencer is probably the biggest learning curve, so if you're new to synths like me, it might be a little tricky to figure that out at first. The modern additions Behringer made to it are nice, such as the dedicated LFO(still have the option to use the bottom oscillator as an LFO as well), the extra oscillator(I don't use it much, but I like having the option), the chorus(quite nice sounding), the distortion(also nice as well, but I prefer the old school phones into ext. input trick), the sequencer and arpeggiator(again a learning curve, but fun once you figure it out). However, I still am trying to figure out what the auto-damp switch does.
As far as the SynthTribe thing, make sure you have the correct USB in order to tweak whatever you want to. For instance, if you want the pitch wheel to change pitch by a whole step like a real Minimoog(moves pitch by a whole octave out of the box for me at least), that will need to be calibrated in SynthTribe. Same for the keyboard velocity, make sure you set it to constant rather than dynamic(I believe) if you want it to feel more like a Minimoog. I saw a couple elitists complaining about that, so that's your solution.
Although the Poly D is such as great instrument for the price, there are a couple things that are a little annoying. First off, the paraphonic/polyphonic mode. Polyphonic mode works only if all oscillators are on(one note per oscillator, keep that in mind before you try the poly mode out) and so far I've had no problems. But the paraphonic mode is pretty lame. Seems to only work when it wants to. But if you're getting the Poly D, your'e getting it because you want a Minimoog for a low price, so I find myself staying in mono majority of the time.
One other small problem it has is this slight clicking sound when you press the keys. Starsky Carr in his comparison video mentioned that the Minimoog has this click as well, but it's not nearly as noticeable. Not sure if it's the keyboard velocity, the oscillators or the filter, but once you starting turning on everything, it's not too noticeable although it occasionally bleeds through. Doesn't bother me personally because it not everything is perfect in this price range.
Overall, I highly recommend the Poly D(4.5/5, almost perfect, aside from those two things mentioned above). It has some minor issues, but they're not big enough of a problem so don't let that deter you from buying it, it is totally worth the price if you want that Minimoog sound for waaaay less money. Big thanks to Evan from the synth department for helping me choose the Poly D. Also big thanks to my sales engineer Domenic Saracina for helping out. I bought it for $809 less than a week before the price was lowered to $600 and Domenic called me and said he'd refund me the amount it was lowered by. Always can count on Sweetwater to take care of me.

Music Background: I've been playing keyboards for about 50 years. I write music. I record music. I've played in bands. I'm a hobbyist for the most part

You be hard pressed to find a better monosynth. The build quality is impressive. It looks gorgeous and it sounds like a quality instrument. Yes you can get huge sounds from it but you can get delicate sounds. It has no presets it has no normal. Sounds like pianos are organs. It's just a synthesizer and the power cord is lousy. But really, I'm blown away by the quality this instrument. It's tremendous

Excellent synth

By Derek K. from Lincolnwood, IL

I love this synthesizer. I love how simple it is to dial in exactly the sounds I'm looking for. Really solid heavy duty build quality. I took off a star for a couple reasons: The MOD wheel and pitch bend aren't calibrated properly. I have to move the dial up halfway before anything starts to happen with the sound. I know its not an issue with the synth, bc i tested this with a controller's mod/pitch wheel and it works much better. Also, the keybed as others have said is inconsistent the first 3/4 from the lower octave are smooth, then the keys under the poly D logo are sticky. Overall I love this synth and I would buy it again.

I've tried to contact my Sweetwater rep about the keybed issue, and he never responded, just ignored me. Which is surprising because the rep always contacts me whenever I buy something cheap like a cable to make sure everything is ok. But now when I buy something this expensive, never reached out, and ignored my concerns when I did. Odd.

Careful!!!

By Todd M. from Maumee, OH

Careful if you think you're saving money buying behringer. Less than a year ago I purchased the 2600, poly D, RD-8 and Vocorder from Sweetwater. One of the keys on the vocoder failed at which time I registered the product with my receipt from sweetwater. I was informed by behringer I failed to register my product in 90 for the extended warranty. I had no idea of this policy. No one at sweetwater mentioned it. So like there's really no one to talk to at behringer by phone so I'm relegated to mailing text support back and forth and at this point they are sticking to their guns and telling me to go jump in a lake concerning my lack of knowledge to get their 3 year warranty. Just saying, are you really saving money from a company like this. Make sure you know to register...Luckily I think sweetwater is going to take care of the vocoder.

As an elitist, I had doubts...

By Christopher B. from Detroit/Naples
Music Background: Detroit Techno/Dub Techno/Downtempo Lo-Fi Instrumental/Ambient Textures

In 1970, the Original 3 oscillator/monophonic Minimoog was the first stand-alone portable synthesizer that changed the path for all synths moving forward. It's essentially the Prometheus of synthesizers, but in 1970...It had limitations. However, this synth was responsible for endless tracks by Pink Floyd, Zapp & Roger, George Clinton/Parliament, etc...

So when Behringer recreated the $15K-$20K Minimoog for only $800, I was skeptical. I did my research, and upon it's delivery, I was immediately 1000% impressed. Sonically, Behringer NAILED IT, and I effortlessly recreated that Juicy-Rubbery Fat Bass Patch heard on so many tracks from the 70s & 80s. The build quality is solid, VERY SOLID. The knobs/wheels have a nice resistance when turning. Additionally, Behringer made this product even better by adding a 4th Oscillator, Polyphonic capability, Iconic Chorus from the Juno, Overdrive from Boss's DS-1, an arpeggiator & sequencer! Seriously wow!

When playing this synthesizer, there's a inherent familiarity that's both exciting & organic, but you also realize that this keyboard really is the first stand-alone synth that all keyboards today (52 years later) are based upon, whether it's the Korg XD, Nord Lead, or Juno, you just feel it. It's made apparent that you're standing in the presence of something historically special, and you instantly see the source of where the evolution of synthesis began.
Behringer officially won me over.

Minimoog and so much more!

By Malachi G. from Virginia Beach, VA
Music Background: Neoclassical/Metal Guitar, Synth

I've wanted a Minimoog sine "A Farewell to Kings". When my garage band talked about the big time, we always talked about my playing a Minimoog. Now, years later, I buy this. No regrets! Paraphony or monophonic, built in distortion, extra oscillator, built in chorus, midi, a sequencer built in, a hold function... a sound that's fat and versatile - unbelievable! I play this and my Behringer Odyssey almost every day - and I'm a guitar player! If you've got the budget, it's a no brainer! In one year, I've purchased a 2600, an Odyssey and a Minimoog (poly D). It just doesn't get any better than this! User note - let the analog synths warm up for a few minutes before you play them - this keeps the annoying tuning drift to a minimum!

Get your vintage synth vibe going!

By Giselle C. from El Cajon, CA

Being a fan of Pink Floyd and other classic synth music, I fell in love with this one. Any vintage sound you want, great interface that's easy to learn, and positively thunderous, roaring synth bass tones! There keybed isn't as dreamy as my Sledge, but it is surprisingly playable for it's size and has aftertouch. Cool onboard effects you be wouldn't have had on an old mini Moog, midi, and a decent selection of patching (one thing my Sledge doesn't have). Super fun board, much recommended!

All I wanted and more...

By Scott from Lansdale, PA
Music Background: I go way back, 60's 70's, 80's music

I was looking for a synthesizer (obviously) for my music production. I'm a guitarist, this was my first real keyboard. I wanted something with power, creative options, something I could really fine tune. After watching lots of demos, samples, researching the features, etc - Wow, this was really a big bang for my buck. If there's room here, I'll add - it seems a limitation to be able to play up to [only] 4 oscillators at a time (yes that means only 4 notes max), the original this is based off of, only had 3! This may be a sticking point for some, but it's designed this way for a reason, and I don't think all those hits that were created over the decades saw it as a problem for the pure, thick, full, rich, analog sound it puts out. The sequencer is a pure bonus and I see limitless creative options here. I quickly found out after plugging it into the computer via USB that it functions as a full-featured keyboard, using all software driven sounds, complete with the pitch/modulation bend. Yeah, I am pretty happy with this, and don't see myself needing another keyboard for a long time.

Amazing product with one small issue

By Cian
Music Background: Producer

Sound: 5/5
Build Quality: 4/5
Keyboard: 4/5

The Behringer poly D is a beast!

Sound:
This little guy is super fun to use, creating sounds is a blast! Juicy leads, and insane low end. Definitely has that moog sound. Using the duo/paraphonic modes are fun, if you're looking to build playable chords you're gonna have to make sure each osc is the same pitch/waveform, otherwise it will switch between osc on each note resulting in a maybe undesirable sound. It really shines in mono mode but I have been able to create awesome 4 voice chords with this still.

My main issue is the volume output is dangerously low, the EXT IN headphone out trick is essential for getting the most out of the Poly D.

Not only does it open up many more sound possibilities but it increases the volume without coloring the sound as much as the distortion effect.

Without the ext in, you're looking at -16db output, which requires an insane amount of boost. I'm running mine into an Apollo twin Duo, with gains as high as 60db using various preamps to get a loud enough sound.

Build Quality:

Build quality is really nice, knobs and switches feel good.
The unit is pretty heavy, and overall looks really nice. I love being able to lift the module up and change the angle.

Keyboard:

Fast and responsive, although some of the keys feel a little more noisy than others, kind of a sticky/clanky sound that hopefully goes away the more I use the unit, but otherwise works perfectly just an annoyance.

Overall I'm really happy with my purchase. If you want to get into analog synths this is the perfect starting synth!

There was a small scratch on the word "Poly" on the unit. Specifically on the Y letter it looks like metal scratched some of the paint off the unit. I'm a little bummed as I bought a new unit not a demo model, obviously it's just cosmetic, it works and sounds amazing so it's just a small gripe.

Was great while it worked!

By Nikko S. from Seattle, WA

Behringer is a very mixed company. They make decent products for a really good price. But you know what they say... you pay for what you get! The mod wheel on my Poly D stopped working almost 3 months in. Very thin sounding. Also its NOT POLYPHONIC its PARAPHONIC, which is a HUGE difference. Very disappointed. Going to have it repaired and then sell it.

Accessible minimoog for the masses

By clair from california
Music Background: synth freak

The poly D can be somewhat plain at first which I thought initially. After playing around with it for a few weeks, I was able to "figure it out". I feel the biggest drawback are the included "effects" The distortion is not very good and it colored the sound WAY TOO MUCH. I overcame that issue by doing what all minimoog users do and that is plug the headphone out into the external in and low and behold the thing screams!!! The chorus is another ho-hum effect that just uses up an extra mixer channel for stereo for best results. My advice is to use your own effects and do the headphone out trick and you will be very pleased with the results.
Also the build quality is so-so. Just because it is heavy does not mean that it was built well. I have had issues with osc volume but it is taken care of by Sweetwater.
Also, my gratitude to Darius Beatz for his incredible support and knowledge.

So Glad I Grabbed This!

By Tom from Apex, NC

Look-everyone knows where the inspiration for this thing came from. (Um....just look at it.) I could never justify the price of an original but I don't need to because this thing gets the job done. The sequencer/chorus/distortion are all bonuses.
Pro tip-use balanced (TRS) 1/4" cables for a better output level. Bring on the UBX-A!

This is a great keyboard for the money. Real wood and metal, plus super fat, rich sounds.
There are plenty of ins and outs to play with. It even has the 5pin midi jacks so I can connect to some of my older equipment. I've been playing all my life (I'm 74 now) so some of my equipment doesn't even have midi. Anyway, it's a great little lead synth.

P.S. Sweetwater is a pleasure to deal with.

Great sounding synth

By Nick from NJ
Music Background: Hobbyist producer

I gotta say it makes me a better synth player. No menu diving and its got limitations. I have multiple other synths with presets which makes me lazy as I will just go to another patch. This makes me find what fits. Sound is full and wide with the onboard chorus. This is a very good tool for my synth chest. Nevermind people saying it's a moog knock off. It has a great sound. If you can't make music with this, it's not the synths fault. In comparison to some other synth makers issues, I've encountered very little. The most annoying being the app not working on my Mac Big Sur however it works on my phone and that is me being picky. As far as the electronics holding up, we shall see. I haven't any issues with behringer products. However I don't use them day to day so….. for the price I got this at, it's a steal

Incredible sound!

By Roger F. from California
Music Background: A pro level amateur.

Some years ago, I bought a Moog Voyager Performer in Lunar Impact White.
It is an excellent synth...

But, I really should have bought the old school model, as I do not need or want presets, touch pad among other features.
The sound, while excellent, isn't as close to a standard D model, which I have spent lots of time playing at our local music dealer back in 1975 to 1978. The Voyager isn't quite the same. Again, an excellent synth.

Recently, I purchased a VC340 string machine/vocoder, and was simply blown away by the quality of build, sound and not least important, the packaging! The Moog had nowhere near the amount of care in the factory carton that Behringer has.

So, I bought a Poly D and it arrived today. I have the exact same feeling about this incredible synth as I immediately felt with the VC340. I have no idea how they can make these for so little cash.

My background is in electronic engineering and my company makes world class recording gear, like compressors and EQs.

My music interest is sort of professional hobbyist who has built synths and string machines since 1976.
I have been through dozens of synths after the onslaught of stuff from Roland, Yamaha etc etc.
Well, one thing for sure is I don't work as well with MIDI/DAW studio setups even though I have tried to gel with them until 2 or 3 years ago when good analog synths started hitting the market.

Then everything came into focus for me. I was only really comfortable with old school synth technology.
I have been building a 128 space MU format synth using a variety of modules in 4- 20 space racks.

But I still needed a mono synth and the Voyager was the solution... Until these came out.
I had worried slightly about the storage and touch pad failing after some years, and wanted a backup, but I missed the Moog D model re-issue.

I am now pretty darn sure I am glad of that now, as I am not a brand conscious player.

I have seen a few bad reviews on the Poly D, but this unit has none of the issues reported in some reviews and conversations. All knobs are solidly mounted on the control shafts, all switches feel tight and solid. The sound is spectacular. The "Poly" mode (really paraphonic mode) works extremely well for me. You just have to know how you use paraphonic synths. The people who said that the poly mode was messed up are completely wrong, wrong, wrong.
Nuff said...

I am completely blown away by the Poly D!

I am also blown away with the care, packaging and support of the Sweeetwater team, especially my sales dude, Brooke Floyd.
Thanks to all of you for making this old man's dream come true!

Love and peace to you all, and stay safe out there!

Love It

By Michael W. from San Angelo, TX
Music Background: Played in and recorded a band for 5 years, live sound for 3 years

So. I never had much faith in Behringer but I love this synth. I've been playing with it for about a year now and I know it's capable of more than what I do with it but for what I wanted it's perfect. Switching between mono synth and poly synth is awesome. Does it have the best synth sound in the world? Maybe not. Does it work and make for a great live or recording tool? Yes. It's pretty durable and I love the materials it's built from. Feels robust and I think it's pretty to look at. Below you can hear it featured in a short song. I feel it's worth every dollar.

By Sweetwater Customer from Tennessee

I'm not an analogue purist so to me the Behringer Poly D is just like my old "D" but with awesome modern enchantments. At the price point it's well worth it IMHO. It is surprisingly heavy but compered to soft synths and table tops the furniture really brings back the original vibe.

You can't really do better

By Tim from Florida
Music Background: Producer and audio engineer/play drums, keys, bass

As far as a monosynth with "that sound" you can't really do better. I'm not going to debate if this synth sounds like the original Minimoog. It has been proven all over the internet that the sound is basically identical. This particular synth adds one oscillator, chorus, distortion, a sequencer, aftertouch and paraphonic (not true polyphonic) functionality. I'm not sure if the original had pressure sensitivity-I don't think it did-but this one does.

The sound is fat. It is ANALOG. When you first fire it up, it sounds only like a hardware analog synthesizer can. If you are used to software or digital synths, you really have to hear it to understand. The chorus is GREAT, it rivals my Boss Dimension waza craft pedal which is a $ pedal. The distortion sounds like...well, distortion. Nice, although unnecessary feature. I'm sure not going to complain that it's there. Four oscillators is insane in a monosynth. Insane in the sense that it sounds MASSIVE, and kind of insane in that you don't really NEED four oscillators. But it sure is awesome to have, and it allows four note paraphonic play.

Which brings me to the functions. If you are familiar with the minimoog D format and its quirks, you'll be at home here. All the knobs and switches are pretty much where they have been for nearly 60 years, for better or for worse. I happen to like the layout, as I am familiar with it by now. Paraphonic synths are different from true polyphonic synths in that you can play four notes on this synth, but they all share the same envelopes. So its a bit quirky, and some odd things happen because of that, but eh. Its part of the inherent design and I bought it for the mono capabilities primarily. BUT, when you have a nice 4 note pad with the built-in chorus, it sounds DELICIOUS. The software for changing some of the internal settings (like note priority, aftertouch, sensitivity, midi settings, etc.) is SUPER easy to use. As someone who hates using software for these things, it really wasn't a big deal, because its usually set it and forget it.

The build quality is criminally good for this price point. The knobs and switches all feel totally solid. the whole unit feels amazing, with the the solid wood wrapping around the face which looks super classy. Many people have complained about the keyboard, but I have no idea what they are complaining about. I have a Prophet Rev 2 which has an AMAZING keyboard right next to my poly d. While their keybeds are certainly different, the poly D by no means has a bad keybed. Keys are my main instrument (I have multiple synthesizers, an acoustic piano, and a Mark I Rhodes), so that is something I am pretty sensitive to. Now my Mark 1 Rhodes, on the other hand, THAT is a questionable keybed LOL.

Others have mentioned quiet output. That is not something I have experienced. I think they may have not turned up the volume of the individual oscillators. User error probably in those cases.

Honestly, as I sit here typing, I can't think of ANY negatives of this synthesizer. Any complaint someone might be able to come up with could be circumvented by either "well, look at the price!" or "well, this synth wasn't meant for that". I wanted the Minimoog sound without dropping 5K+ on a real minimoog. I am not a synth collector, but I make and record music, so this synth actually gets used. A lot. All that REALLY matters to me in the long run is the sound. And this bad boy has that sound in spades.

Amazing Sound, Questionable Keybed

By Blake S. from Portland, OR

I was hooked off the first note I played. It has such a great organic sound, and is easily manipulated to get exactly what you're looking for. The only downside when it comes to this synth is the keybed. Honestly it feels worse than a $ MIDI keybed, luckily I play it through my Korg Prologue 8's keybed.

Those sweet minimoog sounds

By LavaReviews

Behringer kept faithful to the original minimoog while keeping it cheaper for us with normal sized wallets. Don't get confused: it's not a true polyphonic synth. It plays 1 note per oscillator. That means any chords you play will have a maximum of 4 notes at a time. The sequencer is probably the best addition and can be sent out via midi cable to use with anything.

Thing is heavy and large. Don't expect cheap quality just because it says Behringer.
However, the mechanism that holds the module up in the back could use a redesign. Its only a solid metal plate that allows the module to rest on top and does not lock it into place. Other than that, it's near perfect.

It goes beyond the minimoog in a few ways

By Mike R. from Hammonton NJ
Music Background: Keyboard player 42 years, home studio 32 years

The filter on this ax sounds great ! That alone is worth the cash. I haven't tried the in's and out's on the back panel because I'm having to much fun with the front panel. It goes beyond in that it has an arpeggiator with a hold button along with a 32 step sequencer . Not as bulky as the minimoog for fitting in those tight spaces among your other synths. And the keys are not those mini keys found on many of today's toys . And I find the action, or touch worthy of soloing, and not that spring spongy cheap controller feel. I need a keybed that collapses and doesn't hug my fingers on the way up! Great sounding synth, you'll swear your playing a real minimoog. Behringer is really surprising me with the quality stuff their coming out with . I use to deem them middle of the road, but not any more. Can't wait for the OB-8. And hope it has the "2nd page button" if your listening dear folks at behringer.

Awesome synth, really fun

By Nathaniel J. from WA

I'm new to synths. Recently, I've been trying to learn more about synthesis by using VSTs, but everything is so small and mapping a MIDI controller to a synth VST is stupid. I wanted to get some hands-on experience and start making music instead of farting around on my computer, so I did a little research and decided to buy the Poly D. I've had it for 2 weeks now.

WOW! It's amazing. It's a little overwhelming at first, but play around with it and check out a couple Youtube tutorials [loopop and dilliot2k explain the modulation matrix, routing, and filter section very well]; you'll be fine. I would ignore the negative reviews here about clicking noise, low output, tuning issues with poly mode, etc. This is my first synth, and I have had no such issues. I haven't gotten into the arp or sequencer much yet, so I can't comment on that, but it seems straightforward enough. Poly mode is interesting and sounds great for simple synthwave stuff, but if you want big complex chords that's just not what it does. Remember it is 4 notes MAX... Mono mode is excellent, really fun to play. The chorus is gorgeous. I don't care about the distortion but it could be useful I guess. The LFO is dope, very responsive and dynamic. I'm only scratching the surface of what this synth can do, but if you like electro-funk, 80s sci-fi vibes, and noise-scaping you'll love the Poly D.

I went back to the guitar as my main gig with a power trio doing a Prog Rock/Metal thing.I was shocked to see this unit. The old sound is still there and the price tells me I should get one and use it in my band.

Poly D

By N. J. from Indianapolis

I have owned over 7 minimoogs, 2 moog sources, 1 memory moog, moog satilites and a poly moog. The poly D stacks up quite nicely and can be made to sound EXACTLY like a mini in 98% of the time. Those whom rated this badly are making ridiculous claims. Best $... I ever spent. By the way, I never
Paid more than $700 for a real mini moog. Thank you behringer. Think I'll order 4 more

Returned Moog Matriarch and got this instead. Much happier!

By Sweetwater Customer

Yes. The Moog Matriarch has a nicer keybed, and a stereo delay section that the Poly D doesn't have. However, the Poly D has much nicer sounding oscillators. Where the Matriarch sounds wide and thin, the Poly D sounds thick and more harmonically rich. Go listen to YouTube videos of both synths. The Poly D oscillators sound more Moogy and wonderful than what Moog is making today. I can't get over the wonderful sound of these oscillators. The only things I don't about the Poly D is the keybed - particularly the white keys. The white keys have a really soft feel to them with an unreasonably long throw. It's also odd because the black keys definitely have a more solid and springy feel, so the combination feels off here. My other complaint is the chorus. It doesn't sound that great, and it would have been more useful to have a delay or a reverb there. Other than that, this thing is better and more vintage Moog sounding than any Moog available today.

Very cool synth

By Pete from Mid-Missouri
Music Background: Sound system owner/operator - part-time piano player

So...I grew up with a first generation ARP Odyssey synth (1970-something). I even bought one of the 3/4 size reissues a couple of years ago (not Behringer)... and it faithfully reproduces all the cool old ARP sounds. This Poly D blows it out of the water for variety of sound, response and ease of getting around on. It reminds me a great deal of the old Moog synths... and of course it looks a lot like one too... Now I never owned an original Moog so I can't really compare the operation... but I can compare the sound from listening to my old albums, and the Poly D comes REAL close... and it does a whole bunch more... for about 1/3 the price I paid for my original ARP!

By Brandon A. from Texas

Bought this when it first came out this year, I'm happy to see the price drop because that mean more people will have this amazing instrument. The only thing I wish was different is the 32 step sequencer, I'd rather have 64 steps and half of the save slots. But that's just my preference! Also if you want to have another synth control the midi clock you have to change this in the midi setting with a computer.

Moog or no Moog, maybe...

By Steven H. from Shamong NJ
Music Background: Studied music in college, studio engineer, music writer

It may not carry the name Moog, but surely is quite the representation of one. The Poly D would only disappoint brand name purests.
It looks like the original model D, it sounds like the original model D, it practiacally is the model D, but with some really nice intuitive upgrades.
Built like a tank, almost to much to carry for the melenial generation. Lol
This is really a nice version of the original. Nice deep bass tone with a rich analog filter. 4 VCOs really give it that extra kick.
All the extra items really help this come forward. The octive switch for keyboard control is awesome. I tried the sequencer and had much fun. That was an extra box with several conection wires way back then. Only the really dedicated used them. The distortion is cute, as is the chorus effect. I am a delay and reverb man, so I would have been happy with that also. Although that is easy enough to add.
Tuning seemed tight and easy to maintain. I had the original way back when, and had to use a screwdriver to tune it every hour or so.
The pitch wheel and mod wheel seem a little stiff, maybe because it is brand new, so that takes some getting used to.
The poly feature is an interesting twist. I tend to favor the beefy 4 vco thick note you get in mono mode.
I used it in a couple studio recordings and the sound is top shelf.
If you have not experienced the feel and power of a keyboard from the early ages of synthesis, you need to give this one a try. No it does not do every tone in the book of general midi, but the sounds it does produce are not found often in most of todays keyboard products.
It truly is a mini Moog with out the name or price.
Thumbs up!

Worth the wreck less purchase.

By Brandon from Pennsylvania
Music Background: Audio Engineer

I bought this synth purely on impulse. I have wanted a poly synth for a long time, and this is the most affordable one I've seen. I don't regret it in the slightest. This thing is a beast. It plays well with others. I have a MS20 and a Behringer Neutron at home, and it works together well with them. (I midi connect those two with the POLY D as the controller, and then run the neutron into the MS20's external audio source, and run both those synths into the POLY D's external audio source for a massive synth rig). The sequencer works without a hitch, and the keyboard feels great on it. The built in distortion is wonky compared to the distortion on the neutron, but the chorus is a crazy addition and sounds great. Totally would recommend for a great addition to a synth rig for a classic sound.

Good Build for a Great Synth

By Curt C. from Oregon
Music Background: Lifelong musician (flute, guitar, bass); one-time recording studio owner.

Others have commented on the authentic sound and operation of the Poly D, and I heartily agree. I'd have given a five star rating, were it not for a few issues:

The unit itself is solidly built, except for the selector knobs (waveform and octave). They are the same shape as the original Minimoog's, but they have no set screws or shaft clamp mechanism. Two of the knobs already feel loose, with a little "slop" from position to position (see photos). I understand Behringer's need to be frugal in order to meet their $... price point, but something that constantly gets used like the selector knobs need to be a little more substantial, and I'd have been willing to pay a little extra for more durable knobs.

Also, the unit ships with no owner's manual... just a quick-start guide. I've used Minimoogs before, both hardware and software based, so its operation is easy for me. However, the unit will need occasional recalibration and adjustment, through the access holes on the back of the control panel. The quick-start guide doesn't address how to do that. Behringer's Model D Eurorack instrument has the same calibration requirements, and comes with complete instructions on how to do that. I'll be downloading that manual. Meanwhile, the unit does perform just fine, right out of the box.

Lastly, unlike their Model D, the Poly D has no A=440 tuning oscillator. In the studio, that wouldn't be much of a problem: just play a dry note into a tuner app on your phone, or run it through a tuner stomp-box. That's not so easy in a live situation when you're setting up your next patch while listening through headphones.

All in all, I'm very happy with this purchase. Long live Bob Moog!

This is what I’ve needed my whole life.

By Knight
Music Background: Heavy Metal, Synthwave songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist

I bought 3 synths before pulling the trigger on this. I even bought the Prophet Rev 2 which is double the price and I still found myself drooling over this synth. Videos buy Firechild and Moot Booxle were the ones that really did this machine justice.

Let me start by saying the tone that you hear in those videos are exactly what you can achieve. The tone is insanely amazing.

This is one of those synths that you pick up on real quick. It's very easy to learn on.

I now understand what people mean by when they say "you change the way you approach the keyboard with a monosynth". Even though it has polyphonic capabilities it will still perform differently than many might expect especially if you are a newcomer to the analog synth world.

I highly suggest this synth, I find myself constantly creating noises and becoming inspired by the many knobs, the arp and sequencing capabilities. It's one of the most creative instruments I've ever been lucky enough to own.

Fabulous synth

By John T. from Fort Worth, TX

Incredible synth for the money. I read a review saying the polyphony is messed up - it's not. You have to set each of the oscillators to the same octave for it to work like a traditional poly-synth with four voices). Each voice runs on one of the 4 fully analog oscillators. Can't believe the tone I'm getting from a $... synth. Model D without spending an arm and a leg. Also, no issues with this being quiet - don't understand why this would be an issue anyway. That's what mixing's for! I'll buy a new mixing desk with the $5,000 I saved buying this and move the fade up a couple dB... also the build feels solid. Love having a polyphonic model D in my studio. Big source of inspiration.

Halfway decent

By Ian

Keys feel cheap, whole keyboard and design feel like a toy. Butttttttttt, sounds ok if you have something to process the signal. When ran through my compressor and limiter it sounds ok. I don't have the low signal issue other people are experiencing. So I'd say it's ok. It's a good intro synth. A good (not great) recreation of an old synth. So there's no modern parameters. Only midi and added effects. I'd say, don't expect this to change uuur life

Behringer Poly D rocks!

By Jon R. from Frisco, TX
Music Background: Recordist, composer, hobbyist

I have no complaints whatsoever. The Poly D is beautiful and performs just as described. However, if you have different waveforms selected for each of the four oscillators, you might get some strange sounds; however, I use the same waveform for all four oscillators when in "Poly" or "Unison" mode and that solves the "erratic" sounding problem. That's what I discovered. The chorus feature is great! Also, I play my Poly D through a T.C. Electronic Hall-of-Fame 2 and a T.C. Electronic Flashback II, and it sounds Heavenly. I love the aftertouch out also for controlling other keyboards with aftertouch ability. NOW, I can't wait to get my hands on the forthcoming MonoPoly by Behringer. AND, if Behringer decides to release their version of the ARP 2600, I would truly be in Heaven!

One month in and no regrets

By David from Bloomington IN
Music Background: OG keyboards player

I'm not going to say anything new or original here. Read through the reviews, watch videos, and know what you're getting. This synth isn't for everyone, nor was it meant to be. For me, however, it's exactly what I was hoping for, which was an affordable way to get that good old Minimoog feeling back again. Like a lot of people, I sold my MM years ago at the dawn of the digital synth age and over time developed huge regrets. Of course to buy a MM, even on the low-end, is so ridiculously cost-prohibitive as the demand for vintage synths has driven the market value up into the stratosphere. I give Behringer a lot of credit for putting their focus on cloning historically great synths at an affordable price point. And when I say affordable, I don't mean cheap. This unit is solidly built, sounds great, and brings back the joy of tweaking and fiddling to get great, classic, analog Moog sounds.

Bottom line, if you're looking for a MM clone, here it is. I'm sure a lot of people out there will be disappointed simply because the name might imply a polyphonic, analog synth. If that's what you want, look elsewhere. Just like if you want a car that drives like a Honda Civic, don't buy a sports car with a standard transmission. If you want a four oscillator MM that plays more than one note at a time, has a built-in chorus, arpeggiator, velocity and after-touch and a sequencer not to mention a keyboard that lends itself to shredding, then you won't be disappointed.

Note: The negative reviews that point out the low output of this unit may be valid. Personally I haven't seen this as a problem as it puts out enough juice to do whatever I want. As for it sounding thin, that's just plain rubbish. I've matched settings between my Roland SE-02, and also the Arturia Model D IOS app. The Poly D hangs and even outshines both of them with fat, rich, crisp analog goodness. Like I said, know what you're looking for, know what you're buying, and if those things match up don't hesitate to pull the trigger.

Incredible sound and great build quality!

By Jared from STL
Music Background: Gigging Musician

I managed to snag one of these *a bit* early, and have been nothing but impressed so far. If you're looking for huge analog sounds with an incredibly straightforward interface- that doesn't require selling your firstborn- this is your board. The surfaces are all finished nicely, and the knobs feel rock-solid. Korg can really take some notes as far as panel-secured pots go. The hinge for the panel is nice and smooth, without slop, and there's padding on the back to protect the chassis from scratches if you drop the support brace. My only real gripe in terms of build quality is that the keys feel a little mushy. But for a poly keyboard with velocity and aftertouch, it's really not bad. You get the hang of it before long. The real icing on the cake for me is the chorus section, this makes any sound much more present and spacious. And finally, whatever changes they did to the oscillators are very welcome. The tuning is much more stable than the Model D, and it doesn't seem to take long to warm up. I'm definitely gonna be using this for gigs; I hope it doesn't mess up too many PA's ;)

Glad i Made This Purchase

By Marcus V. from Wilkinsburg, PA

I was a little skeptical about buying this but I'm so glad I did !I've always wanted a mini moog model D($5000) and this as close as I'm gonna get to getting one. The bass sounds you can get is worth it alone in my opinion. I've seen a lot of complaints about people not liking the model D but I'm not one of those people.

Does it sound like a mini moog? Honestly, I don't know, I've never personally never touched one or compared the two. All I do know is it sounds fat, has deep bass and you can also get some nice ambient pads with little effects from your daw or guitar pedals and that chorus!!!!!

Poly D manual states it has a max output level of -16 dBu, compared to 0dBu of the rack mount mono version. Noise issues. Thin sound.

By Jordan

I waited since November to get this and was severely disappointed. When I first plugged it in, I was surprised by how quiet and hissy it was - even with the levels maxed out. In order to get the levels up to a useful level, the noise floor is raised and unbearable. This means you essentially have no room. This might be fine for a bedroom musician, but it isn't useful for recording or playing through a decent sound system. According to the manual, the max output level is -16 dBu, compared to their own Model D rackmount version of 0 dBu. Starsky Carr discovers this issue in his near hour-long review of this synth. Either stick with the Behringer Model D rackmount mono version - or save up and get a Moog Matriarch if you need 4 Moog style oscillators.

Behringer has nailed it! I love this synth!!!

By Gary from Redwood Shores

I've never written a review but feel so strongly that this is such a GREAT synth (and I'm no newbie, I've owned over 50 in my life, as well as designed my own from scratch with discrete components - see photo) that I am compelled to balance out some of what I feel are undeserved negative comments posted here. I myself have been having a blast with my Poly D since receiving it last week. That being said, I think there will be some expecting this to be a typical modern polyphonic synth and are bound to be disappointed. BUT if you are more knowledgeable about classic analog synths and realistically set your expectations that this is the MiniMoog you always dreamt of but could never afford (how can these guys complain after spending $... on a $5K synth) but with not only an added oscillator, but with a sequencer, extra modulation capabilities, and aftertouch then I promise you the Poly D will NOT disappoint. "Audio Engineers" who just flip the Poly switch expecting it to play chords with the individual oscillators probably not even tuned or even in the same octave are naturally going to throw up their hands up and give crap reviews. And I don't know what unit they're looking at, but mine is built like a tank, much more solid and heavier than any of my current Korgs or Rolands. As for "clicks" and noise and low-output complaints, again, not judging, but knowing how to hook up your gear and how to correctly tweak envelopes does pay dividends.

To be honest, I’m having Fun.

By emmanuel a. from Encinitas, CA
Music Background: Guitar Player/ Dj

The more I play it, the more I like it. It's not a moog or full polyphonic, but if you want a monophonic analog synthesizer built solid with a full size a keyboard, its worth it too me.

I own a minitaur and sub Phatty and they don't sound like the original Minimoog either. But I like that, it's different in a good way.

It's not perfect. You need to give it gain and you can't save patches. If you can live with that, it's an awesome instrument.

Save your money

By Jeremy L.
Music Background: Audio Engineer

All the demos I heard of this thing sounded fantastic! I was immediately sold. I just received my Poly D today, and I have to say, it doesn't sound anything like the demos. Instead of sounding rich and full, the sound is frail and thin. It's also not truly polyphonic. I don't know if maybe my unit was faulty, but I could hit the same two or three note chord a few times and get a few different sounds, none of them being the correct chord. It's like the unit didn't know what to do with chords when switched to Poly mode. The distortion module seemed to not add any distortion, but just break up the signal as if the signal were cutting in and out. I was excited to see the control section could be propped up. However, it's propped up by a thin piece of metal. The entire control section moves when I touch it. I thought I was going to break it just from plugging the headphones in!

I know at this price, it looks and sounds very tempting, but save your money for something better. The Poly D isn't even close to decent.

It's quite the beast

By Jarrett from Toledo, OH
Music Background: Production, Jazz, EDM

Being a proud personal owner of this new model, I'm simply blown out of the water. You don't need to listen to me talk - the YouTube reviews say it all with how impressive it is, and I've yet to fully tap into the potential. Solid build, good response, plenty to work with out of the box without trying to introduce pedals; this is just simply a great piece of gear.

Only thing I really have a gripe with, and it could just be my own issue or negligence - I don't recall receiving a manual with this. Now, I know a lot of companies may not print it as a means to save on paper waste, but I was a little disappointed when I couldn't even find anything on Behringer's own website. This makes trying to learn the specifics of the instrument a bit difficult, as I have to rely on YouTube and forums for more information. Though it is based on Moog's Model D, it's not exactly the same in some areas, so there's only so much that I can learn from studying on the Poly D.

Absurdly Beautiful and Inspiring at This Price Point

By Rick H. from Berkley, MI

Very good build quality....at least cosmetically. Too soon to know with the electronics. The sounds are remarkably rich; just so heavy and beautiful. Once I got the controls worked out I literally jumped from amazing tone to amazing tone. One after another; pads, soft buttery lead tones. No patch memory....oh lord how I wished there was a patch memory bank! I've read the beefs people have with these on the usual suspect forums; I've detected none of these issues. Of course, I like to make tracks; not fiddle with gear to find faults. So your mileage may vary. For me, this is a wellspring of inspiring and sublime tone.

It looks nice but doesn't sound nice.

By Jon

I was really excited to get this because the rackmount monophonic Behringer Model D sounds fantastic. This instrument, however, is vastly different than their rackmount Model D. First, the overall output of this instrument is far too low. By the time you gain stage properly at the mixer or interface, you have a very high noise floor. Second, the envelopes are too clicky. Even with a slightly slower attack time, you get a loud click and pop that goes thought the audio signal. Third, even after all that, the oscillators don't have the same bite and aggressiveness as the rackmount Behringer Model D. On a positive note, the external build quality is nice and impressive. Unfortunately, the sound engine does not live up to the hype.
