Behringer MonoPoly 4-voice Analog Synthesizer Reviews

37-key, 4-voice Mono/Paraphonic Analog Synthesizer with 4 VCOs, VCF, 2 LFOs, 2 Envelopes, Sync and Cross Modulation, and Arpeggiator

By the dawn of the 1980s, analog synthesis had matured to a level of sophistication that nascent digital technology could scarcely hope to match. In the feverish musical creativity of early ’80s, the clangorous sounds of early digital synths were offset by the supremely lush sounds of a new crop of analog synthesizers, both joining forces to spearhead the synth pop insurgency of the coming decade. One such analog synth, the MonoPoly, made its debut in 1981. Equipped with no less than four oscillators (each with multiple waveforms), the MonoPoly was capable of insanely fat sounds and prodigious bass that could blow holes through walls. As good as it was, it was, curiously, only on the market for three years. Today, vintage MonoPolys are quite rare — and rather pricey even if you can find one. But fret not! Sweetwater is proud to present the Behringer MonoPoly, a meticulous reimagining of the coveted beast, seamlessly infused with modern features and reliability.

It's quirky, phat, and AWESOME!

By Charlie.B. from Skokie, IL
Music Background: Synthesizer/ Electronic music enthusiast.

Thanks again to my sales engineer, Ashton Vaunt for getting me the synth quickly!

I bought this for my birthday this year. The Behringer MonoPoly is a "clone" from the original Korg MonoPoly from 1981. With that said, it holds all the conventions of what a subtractive synth of that era would most likely have. In particular, I appreciate the attention to details Behringer has brought to recreating the Korg MonoPoly.

The MonoPoly is definitely not a MiniMoog or an ARP Odyssey. It is its own instrument, with four oscillators, a 24dB lowpass filter, arpeggiator and "Effects". It sounds incredible!

Now mind you, this is a recreation of a Synthesizer from the early 80's, so many of the conventions we have taken for granted 40+ years later have to be put aside to understand this. The effects section is not reverb, chorus or delay, but sync and cross modulation. Four oscillators can be played at once, or one at a time in Poly mode. There is also Chord Memory which allows a four note chord to play monophonically.

I have gotten some heartbreakingly beautiful timbres out of the MonoPoly, thick basses, sheer metallic fury. It is designed for thick timbres, but sounds just fine with one or two oscillators. The filter... gorgeous.

There is nothing I would change. It is what it is, a recreation of the original. True, the oscillators themselves cannot go beyond +/- a semitone (this is sort of remedied by Chord Mode). No sample and hold LFO (I've taken care of that need by patching from my modular). All in all, it is what it is, with no menus, easy to understand architecture, and fantastic early 80's sound. As a man who grew up listening to classic 80's synth music, I can highly recommended the Behringer MonoPoly!

Awesome Synth!

By Sweetwater Customer

My reviews very late here! I bought from the first batch in 2020/2021? It's everything you want it to be, however early models had a VCO grounding issues. They did patch that later so, new ones are all good. But if like me, it's a $ tech fee to get the wire soldered in. If you own a new one and suffer from volume bleed this is the fix!

Needs simple improvements.

By Jon from DC

This was so close to being a keeper for me but I ended up returning it because: (1) You can't transpose the built in keyboard below C1. Using the Synthribe you can transpose incoming MIDI but not the built in keyboard. This was very frustrating. (2) the tuning knobs per oscillator have a very limited range of only half a step. The Poly D has a much wider range so you can do things like, tune in 5ths. (3) PWM is LOCKED to all voices simultaneously - so you cannot have PWM make each individual OSC dance. (4) The noise on this is harsh and you cannot use it a modulation source. Noise is useful for making wind instrument like sounds and percussive sounds. Here, the noise is overbearing and rides too far on top of the oscillators, making it just a harsh noise source and not very useful for sound design.

Its a fine synth but its limitations are a little too blunt. It's expected for vintage reproductions to have these limitations but this one is just too limited compared to other 4 voice paraphonic synths - even by the same company.

Love this synth. Amazing sound. Incredible controls and options. My performances wouldn't be the same without this.

So good I could go for a 2nd!

By Rev R.

Back in the day (early '90's) I was the 'weirdo' with analog mono synths. $110 Arp Odyssey, $1,000 Moog II and a $900 Putney I saw 'em all! Foolishly trading up to a Polyfusion that never got off the ground, I abandoned my synths 20 odd years ago and only started a tentative return. Enter the MonoPoly. Arp guru Dave Wilson's FAVORITE synth back in the day (I can see why!) it does 80+ percent of what my monster synth.com modular synth did for me back in the day. Four MASSIVE oscillators, thick filter and a arpeggiator that, in poly mode, plays like a primitive modular sequencer. I keep thinking what two of these beasts would sound like synced together :) Built like a TANK with REALLY nice nobs and a decent, playable keyboard. Warm, analog goodness at your fingertips for PENNIES. Walk, don't run...

Mighty Synth!

By Jerry from Florida
Music Background: A TRUE musician....never made a dime!!!!

Always a sucker for the next new "must have" keyboard but this one puts the others to shame. I'm a player and NOT a programmer. I LOVE my presets but struggle to create my own. With the MonoPoly, everything was laid out easily and creating new sounds was so easy and intuitive; I am loving this synth.
The only other synthesizer I've ever owned that was this easy to create on was my beloved Minimoog in the late '70s (Long since gone to Keyboard Heaven); however unlike that magical beast, THIS one stays in tune and once you let the unit warm up a bit, it is nearly as versatile as Uncle Bob's little baby.
Highly recommended plus how can you beat the service and price at Sweetwater.
Merry Christmas to ME!!!!!

Fat Analog Syncing LFO Modulation on the Fly

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Professional Music Producer and Recording Engineer

I got this because Sweetwater flashed it on an ad. I checked out the original that this Behringer was cloned after, and it looked interesting. When the unit arrived, I could tell it was a solid synth. Heavy (analog parts) and solid build. Looks good too. Yes, it has 4 VCOs and much more parameters than the Korg Volcas which can have 3 VCOs stacked. (I owned a few of those also).

This synth can make a fat bass sound that only synths like the Prophet 6 and Sequential Six-trak can make (Yes, I have a Prophet 6). It's the sound from Berlin's song The Metro. It's also the sounds of Yaz's Situation. I use to reproduce those sounds on a Sequential Six-trak. I don't think any DCO synth can make that sound, even if stacked and effected.

Its LFOs sync to MIDI clock and to voltage trigger in. So it clocks to both digital and analog triggers. It also can put out an analog trigger as well as MIDI sync out. Not many synths can do that. This ability, along with the ability to manipulate knobs on the fly while the sequence is playing cannot be emulated by any plug in. Think of the pulsating sounds on Madonna's Ray of Light. I saw the synth player do it live with a vintage Korg synth, but I could reproduce the same sounds with the Behringer Monopoly.

It is somewhat expensive for a 4-voice synth, but when I think about it, very few synths can put out and accept both analog (voltage trigger) and digital (MIDI clock).

I experimented with a Behringer RD-8, using it to trigger and modulate the Monopoly. It was ultra-cool.

Putting the fat stacked VCO bass sounds through a flanger pedal sounds totally awesome.

This one is a keeper for me given my genre and style. I produce teen pop, technopop, synthpop, electronic dance, and pop rock music.

Well I can't tell the difference

By Tony M. from Santee, CA

I had one of the original Korg Monopoly's when it came out and grew up with it. Always regretted selling it in the 90's. This is just like having it back again. The crazy sounds you can get out of this thing just blow my mind. Pop on the arpeggiator, switch it to mono and let it loop through the 4 vco's, pop the "Effect" button on and you're off to another planet. Zero complaints!

This has been my favorite synth so far.

By Ryan from Grand Rapids, MI
Music Background: A/V Engineer, Recording/Composing Musician, Computer Tech Specializing in A/V Systems

Had a Korg MonoPoly, I'm pretty sure I like Behringer's better. To be fair, I got my Korg in 1999 and it wasn't exactly, new.

Behringer's MonoPoly is near perfection in form, function and sound. So far, I can't really tell the difference from my original. And that's comparing it to published studio recordings. Even if there were some sonic differences, they would be minor and... So what! In function alone, this synth is amazing. Korg's virtual instrument version is killer but there's so many knobs on the MonoPoly (wonderfully so). Nothing beats having a labeled knob over a generic MIDI controller knob.

The only issue I have with this synth, and many other USB synths have this... USB noise. It's bad on the MonoPoly I received, the main out volume actually attenuates it. The noise seems to be getting in from the USB and internally leaks over to the analog side. I had to buy a $ USB isolator to get rid of the noise. On the exact same input chain and USB cable, Behringer's Neutron was silent. My studio is silent otherwise.

I have a few support messages with Behringer about this, at one point they seemed to think I had a bad unit. But when I mentioned I fixed it with an isolator, they stopped responding. May have to work with Sweetwater to see if I indeed have a bad unit, or if this noise is inherit with the MonoPoly. As it is with many other USB synths. At least the isolator brought it to a silent output. Unplugging the USB cable also removes the noise. Though I primarily use MIDI, it's nice to keep the USB connected to make configuration changes to the MonoPoly as needed.

The MonoPoly (Korg or Behringer) is my favorite analog synth so far. Behringer's is tank-solid and with MIDI, an easy buy for the studio or stage.

My only real concerns with the MonoPoly are USB noise and it would have been great to have a MIDI channel selection knob on the front too. Otherwise, a super-synth!

Super happy with this one

By Dan from Denver, CO
Music Background: 20 years experience in Guitar + Electronic Music Production

Waited for months until it was available, had no idea how big the frigging thing was until I picked up the package at fedex. Pictures online are deceiving, this is a full sized synth. You'll want to pick up a case from a third party if you plan to travel, but whatever you do, do not buy one from "Analog Cases". They charge 200+ for the cheapest case they could possibly make, with flimsy thin plastic shell and crappy cheap sheet "metal" that bends under the stapled studs. The latches are cheap alloy, I get genuinely worried every time I walk with it in this case, fearing that it will fall out. Reminds me of a cheap case you'd find at a fair/carnival for some overpriced collectible. The case should cost no more than 15 bucks, to be entirely honest.

Anyway enough about that, the synth itself is built really well, the only part that feels half sketchy is the aluminum plate that holds the back up…but otherwise it's solid. Keybed feels nice, and the knobs all feel solid. It's a heavier synth. The sounds/features are pretty amazing, although I can't personally attest to what it sounds like in comparison to the original monopoly, having never owned one, it still looks and sounds quite good. I'm not too impressed with either of the poly modes, they just don't seem to play well. With an arp/sequencer they seem better.

It's been a lot of fun noodling around with it and I look forward to doing more in the future.

Amazing albeit same issue as another user posted

By Daniel from Minneapolis

The Behringer MonoPoly is extremely satisfying to play. My friend and I love it. It's our favorite synth. However, the power supply stopped working after only a handful of uses. I, like another reviewer posted, had to steal an adapter from another synth. I guess I should call up Cliff at Sweetwater and tie up that one loose end…Anyways, the actual sound of the synth is superb. Great build quality.

MonoPoly - 5 stars despite one issue

By Sweetwater Customer

This synth sounds amazing. The only draw back is that the power supply only worked twice. I had to steal a power supply from another synth in order to power the unit. I'm gonna reach out for a new power supply but I'm not going to down grade my rating due to this. The synth is amazing and super fun to play. Great build and nice rich sound.

Amazing Reproduction of the Original

This is probably one of my favorite behringer purchases so far. I've been waiting for this keyboard since 1984 and it was totally worth the wait! I have a YouTube channel and I am posting the video here so you guys and gals can check it out. 100% satisfied with this device and as usual sweet waters support and sales team is amazing!

Great little synth!

By Vic

This synth is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorites. My primary synthesizers are my Novation Peak and Summit, and Behringer Deepmind, but there's something about having all of the parameters right on the panel (no menu diving) that brings back the simple fun of playing a basic analog synth. And the sounds I can derive from this synthesizer are truly unique.

Also, kudos to the entire team at Sweetwater for their excellent customer care and problem solving.

I Love this Synth!!!!

I used to own a Korg Mono/Poly synth way back when, it was the synth that glued my keyboard rig together, the sound was always amazing, I always missed that synth. And now that Behringer has released they're take on this iconic synth...one word WOW. it is a Mono/Poly in every way. it is good to have one back in my rig!

Wow!!!

By Scott M. from Alabama
Music Background: Keyboardist

First off I need to say that no one is better than Sweetwater. I order from them a lot and have never had a bad experience of any kind. I'm somewhere around 20 Behringer synths and 5 Behringer pedals. They are all awesome but this MonoPoly is in my opinion, the perfect synthesizer. It sounds amazing by itself but run it through the Behringer Multi-FX Pedal and prepare to have your mind blown! I'll be adding the VC340 soon.

Unique Analog Gem

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Recording musician

First off, I own several other analog and digital synths including Moog and Dave Smith—but I've never owned an original MonoPoly. I was worried about Buyer's Remorse adding another analog keyboard, as my Prophet 08 covers a lot of ground. However, the MonoPoly is completely different. I love this synth. The "effects" section (which is really two LFOs not Delay or Reverb) is great. By using the modes Unison and Poly you can achieve incredibly unique sounds, and it's wonderful for arpeggios—using either the onboard arp or Ableton/DAW midi via USB. Great synth for leads and stabby-type chords. The build quality is fantastic, solid, metal and wood. It's heavier than I expected given that a lot of new synths are plastic and light. I've had it for a weekend and I've played it until I became too sleepy to stay awake. Sounds great on its own, but then through Valhalla Delay it's incredible. Highly recommend this as a great compliment to your keyboard studio. Don't think too much about YouTube demos as this is one that requires you to play it to understand the possibilities.

Pros: Unique sound, modulation, four oscillators, arp, solid build, intuitive
Cons: Keyboard is a little weak but not horrible. My low E key is off center (an aesthetic issue not a functional one).
