Large-Diaphragm FET Condenser Microphone with 3 Voicings, 3 Gain Settings, and 3 Polar Patterns (Omni, Cardioid, and Figure-8)

If you're looking for extreme versatility, Lauten Audio's Atlantis FC-387 is going to knock your socks off. This amazing large-diaphragm FET condenser mic takes Lauten Audio's reputation for building uniquely diverse microphones to a whole new level. Three distinct voicing switches let you use the Atlantis FC-387 to bring out the richness in your lows, the character of your mids, and the smoothness in your highs. So, what's a microphone like the Atlantis FC-387 good for? EVERYTHING! Ask your Sweetwater Sales Engineer about the Lauten Audio Atlantis FC-387 today! Lauten Audio Atlantis FC-387 FET Condenser Microphone at a Glance:

  • One microphone, three distinct voices
  • A polar pattern to fit any environment
  • Gain options for a wide range of sources

One microphone, three distinct voices The Lauten Audio Atlantis FC-387 FET condenser microphone gives you a degree of control over your sound beyond the reach of most typical mics. That's largely because of its 3-way voicing switch, which lets you subtly but effectively contour its basic character. Set to its Gentle postion, the Atlantis FC-387 levels out bright peaks, taking the bite out of sibilant esses. The Neutral setting maintains even transparency without noticeably altering your sound, whereas the Forward voicing lets you add life to dull sources, without reaching for your EQ. A polar pattern to fit any environment Just as important as its various voicings, the Atlantis FC-387 gives you three polar patterns to choose from, allowing you to record in any environment. The omnidirectional setting is open and responsive, allowing you to capture both the crispness of your source and the resonance of your recording environment. The Atlantis FC-387's cardioid mode, on the other hand, gives you excellent off-axis noise rejection and naturally tames some of the low end. Finally, Lauten Audio gave the Atlantis FC-387 a figure-8 setting, which provides you with amazing side-noise rejection. Gain options for a wide range of sources Once you start using the Atlantis FC-387, you're going to want to stick it on everything. Luckily, Lauten Audio gave it a 3-way gain switch, so it can accommodate any instrument. For general use, the 0dB setting gives you the purest, most transparent sound. For a bit more presence (and to hit your mic preamp a bit harder), you can kick the Atlantis FC-387's output up by +10dB. If, on the other hand, you're recording a blaring guitar cab or using a pair of Atlantis FC-387 mics as overheads, you'll probably find its -10dB setting useful. Lauten Audio Atlantis FC-387 FET Condenser Microphone Features:

  • Extremely versatile FET condenser microphone that's great for anything from vocals to didgeridoos
  • Large-diaphragm, solid-state FET design provide a naturally smooth sound
  • Individually hand-tuned capsule and premium high-resolution electronics provide unrivaled sound quality
  • Switchable omni, figure-8, and cardioid polar patterns let you adapt to any environment
  • 3 voicing options let you change the contour of your sound, mellowing out highs or bringing them forward
  • 3 gain settings let you boost weaker signals and pad louder sources such as drums and guitar amplifiers
  • Requires +48V phantom power

The Lauten Audio Atlantis FC-387 FET condenser microphone is an amazing all-purpose mic!

Sounds as Big as it looks!

By Rich L. from Glenside, PA
Music Background: 50+ yrs doing music

I have a hefty mic locker. With that said, this mic stands alone. It's very full bodied, more so than any fet or valve I've used. It's not the same kind of thickness you would think. It's unique and unfamiliar, yet a sound you'll grab for when you need intimacy on a larger than life scale. I wouldn't call it natural in any setting but all are beautifully musical.

Happy With The Purchase

By Ignat

The cable is sold separately. The box contains only the microphone.
I chose a microphone based on my budget and the characteristics I wanted. The microphone completely met my expectations.
The microphone is quite large and quite heavy.
It's a high-quality product.

The Lauten Atlantis FC-387 Great Mic

By Junior b. from CLIFFSIDE PARK, NJ

The Lauten Atlantis FC-387 is a very compelling mic. If I were picking one mic for a studio that needs to be useful in multiple contexts, this mic is one of the top contenders. The voicing options make it much more versatile than many large diaphragm condensers that lock you into a single sound. It brings a modern, clean clarity with the ability to lean vintage or smooth when needed.

LOVE IT!

By Sweetwater Customer from FL

PLEASE NOTE:

My comments revolve around my particular male speaking voice
and timbre which is a low baritone but one click-up from say the Sam Elliot register.

Also, bear in mind, some VO voices sound great on certain mics and others don't. Heck, I
hate how I sounded on an original U-87 I had back in the analog days but loved how it sounded on a
freakin' Sennheiser 421 dynamic!!! (Go Figure!) Not all mics will sound great on all voices. Period.

I only do Voice Overs and Voice acting and have been doing-so for decades.
Ergo, I've been through a slew of Neumann & Sennheiser condensers and
dynamics and host of other kinda pricey mics. I have recently been using a TLM 103 and a Senn 416
and my voice sounds really good on either but...I always felt like I wasn't hearing the "real" ME.
It's REALLY hard to explain but when you've been in the biz as long as I have, and done 1,000s of recordings
on analog AND digital, you really DO start to notice the little finites.

Anyway, I received this mic and put it through some paces in "Neutral" mode and was immediately very, VERY impressed!
I liked the tone, clarity and lack of sharp edginess in that 2-5k region but still, those frequencies were there
with full vigor but just not hyped in any way. In a word, it just sounded Natural!

After recording a few bits in "Neutral," I switched to "Forward" and THAT's when I went from being very
VERY impressed to totally SOLD!!! WOW, for my voice register and timbre it simply delivered the goods!

BUT THEN...
during playback, I heard something I haven't heard in years!!! The guy talking sounded just like ME! ME!
"Yes, that's my voice!" I said to no one listening. CALL IT my imagination. Call it rationalizing a pricey mic.
Call it anything you like. I'll simply say that for me and MY particular voice, this mic does what I want to perfection!

TRY IT ON YOUR VOICE in all 3 settings and see if it delivers the same kinda magic.
(I haven't even gotten to "Gentle" mode yet or even played with the 10db gain switch)

I had done a ton of research on this mic before purchase but my rep Henry Moore couldn't stop singing its
praises having worked with it in a "zillion" different ways. His "experienced" excitement about the mic
made me finally pull the trigger. SO GLAD I did! Thanks Henry! You know your stuff! GREAT JOB LAUTEN! REALLY!!!

Incredible

By Matthew B. from Kildeer, IL

I've owned at least 20-30 mics in the sub-$ price range and finally decided to get something nicer. After a lot of deliberation I settled on the Atlantis mainly because of the different voicings. But to be honest, I leave this thing in the forward setting 99% of the time. If I'm recording acoustic guitar, that would be one scenario where I'd use one of the other settings. But it truly brings a vocal to the front of a mix in a way I'd never experienced. And it only needs a little bit of EQ and the vocal is basically done. It's amazing.

Lauten Audio Atlantis FC-387

By Allen J. from HUMBLE, TX
Music Background: Singer/songwriter & Producer

This microphone is probably one of the best mics out on the market. It's a little pricey, but if you're willing to spend the money I would highly recommend following through with getting it! The Atlantis comes with 3 different voicing switches, in my opinion, this is the game changer for me because it's like you have 3 microphones in one ranging from the forward setting, neutral setting, and gentle setting—all of these sound amazing and allows for a versatile approach in whatever music you might be making.

Customer service was amazing and very helpful, they even gave me a call and let me know that my package was on the way! I received it without any damage and they blessed me with some Sweetwater candy

Awesome mic! How did I not know about Lauten Audio before!?

By DC from USA
Music Background: Professional Recording/Mix Engineer

Some context. I record rock, country, alt-country, Americana, and dabble in metal from time to time. Most of my clients are 70/30 male to female. I have good mics--most of my LDCs are Tube mics from Neumann, Pearlman, etc. My solid-state mics are so-so - mid-tier work-horses but nothing to write home about. I wanted a mic that could give me a vintage vibe but still be forward without the tube sparkle. On advice from a trusted studio, I grabbed this mic from Sweetwater and was blown away at how good this mic handled whatever I threw at it. The transients were present without being sharp, the body of the sound was full without getting strident, and the lows were present without standing up and saying "I'm in control now".

It takes EQ very, very well. Sound great on front of everything I tracked - mandolin, acoustic guitars, male and female vocals, shakers, bass guitar. AND it has a vibe without being in the way of the source. I can see this being my new work-horse mic.

My only reason for the 4 stars, the shock mount seems like the weak link on an otherwise very nice mic.

Oh and this mic should not be mounted on a cheap mic stand. It's heavier than a couple of my tube mics. A good stand/boom and counterweight is needed.

WORTH THE INVESTMENT

By Cassidy G. from Gilroy, CA
Music Background: Recording Artist & Audio Engineer

I am so happy I was able to invest in this microphone because since I've done so, the quality of my recordings have increased tremendously! I love the 3 different microphone settings by the way! I can try to describe this microphone to you but all I can say is that it is 100% worth your investment no matter the genre or style of music you do!

Honestly blew me away.

By Taylor S.
Music Background: Professional musician, producer, mix engineer

I own a u87ai, slate VMS, Avantone cv12, and I handful of other microphones. Up until now the u87 was my go to vocal mic. I had a recording session this week and had the chance to compare the u87 side by side with the Atlantis and let me just say… it blew my mind. I am ver familiar with the 87 and know how to mix it usually pretty fast to sit in the mix how I want. With the Atlantis in forward position, this mic sounds MIXED! And not in an overly processed way but a really smooth and well rounded sound with just the right amount of sizzle. I'm so impressed. This mic has really got me excited for future projects! I've never left a review but this mic at this price point demands a review!

Almost perfect

By Mickey from IN
Music Background: Audio Engineer

This mic is nothing short of spectacular sounding. This will be my "go-to" LDC from this point forward. The 3 voicings make setup for a revolving door of vocalists an absolute breeze. Same goes for guitar cabinet, incredible! This mic hits like it should cost twice as much as it does, easily.

My only issue with this kit is the shock mount. It loosens far too easily. Don't let a vocalist breathe too hard on it! Only reason this is not 5 stars!

Excellent quality

By Michael
Music Background: Saxophonist

Microphone arrived carefully packed in a beautiful wooden box. The mic holder is very well constructed and substantial. This is quite a heavy microphone. A good strong microphone stand is really needed to keep the assembly well supported. As far as recording, this microphone is really transparent and the source sound is exactly what you hear with your ears. It's the first time I've felt my voice was recorded as I hear it myself. I bought this to record my saxophone, voice and hand percussion and makes everything sound very realistic. The switch that allows you to subtly accentuate or slightly tone down certain harmonic areas of the source, is very good. You can tell the difference between the settings and it definitely adds to the flexibility for recording different sources or singer. I think it's definitely worth the price for the sound and quality you're getting.

The only issue is the clip

By Sweetwater Customer

The mic sounds great, and is extremely versatile, as this is a written review and you can't hear it though, just go listen to some sound tests. I'd like to talk more about the build. The locking mechanism on the shock mount is barely strong enough to keep the mic in the position you want. You have to really crank it to lock it in place, and even still it may not stay. the build quality on the shock mount is quite poor, knocking this from a 5 star down to a 4 star.

versatility, build quality, customer service

By Smetana from AZ
Music Background: rock, etc...

This is a great mic. I've had it for about 6 months now and have used it on quite a few sources including vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and drum overheads. It's quiet, clean and captures exactly what it's pointed. It's built extremely well and will obviously take much more of a beatin than I'll ever give it. Sounds fantastic thru both solid-state and tube preamps. I had a very small issue with the shock mount, called Lauten direct and received a call back in short order. The helpful rep on the call gave me a tip on how to remedy it, and told me if that didn't work they would happily replace it. I'd like to have one more.

My workhorse

By Brad
Music Background: Engineer/Producer

I throw a lot of sound sources at microphones, and the Atlantis seems to handle any and all things I put through it. But how could it not? It is 3 mics in one. I was skeptical at first, thinking the voicing differences might be an eq gimmick, but that's not the case. I did extensive research and mic shoot outs before I decided what to buy. I bought a pair of Atlantis FC-387's. The Lauten Audio company/family was kind enough to custom make a matched pair for me. For vocals I was using a more well known brand name, but since I got the Lauten Atlantis my vocal clients immediately ask me "what are you doing differently?...my voice sounds amazing now!" I wish I could tell them it was some new trick I learned. And I guess it is something new that I learned. I learned Lauten. My good friend, Matt, at sweetwater helped me find my way. Hit him up at ext. 1249. Happy music making!

FC 387 Awesome !

By Cornell S. from West Sacramento, CA
Music Background: Producer/Engineer

I don't usually leave reviews, but this microphone certainly deserves one. I researched this mic quite a bit before I bought it, and was skeptical of the hype. I decided to buy it, and give it a go, and I'm glad that I did! this mic is extremely versatile, and very transparent. I've used it on vocals, and guitars, and the sound is phenomenal! Everyone raves about the Neuman U87, and I have one of those too; haven't pulled it out my locker in a while lol because the FC 387 is that good! There's no disappointment with this microphone. If you're thinking about it, be like Nike and just do it!

The Swiss Army Vocal Mic

By David T. from Nashville, TN

I have several great vocal mics in the mic locker but none as versatile as the Lauten Atlantis. The switchable voicing allows this mic to fit a much wider range of vocalists and genres of music. The F (Forward) position is great for modern pop, pop country. The G (Gentle) position is a warm and relaxed sound, great for Jazz and Americana. The N (Neutral) is my go-to when I want to capture the sound as it is at the source.

On acoustic guitar, Piano & Drum Overheads the mic also shines......If only I had some more of them.

If you're in the market for a great large diaphragm mic (and this diaphragm is larger than most) You can't go wrong with the Lauten Atlantis.

Great, versatile microphone

By Brandon from Tulsa, OK
Music Background: Church musician/home studio owner

If you own a project studio or home studio, you really need this mic. I've been trying out various vocal mics - the Sony C100, Neumann TLM-107, Miktek C7e, and I own other Blue, Shure, and Audio Technica mics. This mic outshines them all on most sources, especially vocals. It is so versatile. The multi-voicing allows me to pair this mic with any voice on any song and get a good result, often a great result. On acoustic guitar I can achieve a darker vintage tone with the gentle setting or pick up more of the percussive pick sounds in forward. Yes, I could accomplish some of this with EQ, but this gets it right at the source with the flip of a switch. The +10 setting also gives the sound a more aggressive character that allowed me to get a better vocal sound on someone who has a rather boring voice. Try it. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Love this mic !

By Jay C. from Long Beach NY

I was looking for something that could capture my voice with clarity, a balanced low end and crisp high end.

I have recorded on a few different mics, I've even had the pleasure of recording with a SONY C800g and WOW, You really do get what you pay for! When I first got my home set up I was recording on a AKG C214 which is a great microphone for that price range. Good on both singing and rap vocals, although it can be a little harsh on certain frequencies. I then purchased a Avantone BV-1 and must say I was blown away with that microphone. I have a very strong voice, and this captured my vocals very nicely, and added this slight creamy warmth to them. I really enjoyed using this microphone.

After looking around for my next investment (ALWAYS difficult to purchase new microphones without trying them because everyones voice is different, and certain mics complement certain voices wonderfully, and others, not so much), I stumbled upon the Mojave MA200, with raving reviews! I called Sweetwater to discuss my needs, and with the help of Michael Lombardi who has been extremely helpful during the whole process, made this purchase. Now I have to say that that mic was definitely something I would have kept in my arsenal... however it wasn't quite what I was looking for. I can see how it can be forgiving on many vocalists, but I wanted something that could truly capture the essence of my voice (not to toot my own horn but I have a voice that has been comparable to Chris Brown/Usher... don't believe me search "Jay Colins" on any streaming platform and hear for yourself!) That mic didn't quite do it for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I expressed to Michael my concerns... he made it SUPER easy to return this mic, and we both leaned towards the Lauten Audio Atlantis as something that could suit my needs. Received this mic, and I could tell by the first take that this was it. Such a beautify clarity that this mic has... and its versatility is amazing! I haven't even got to fully dive into this bad boy... but with the different voice settings it can easily be adjusted to fit whatever vibe I'm going for (or to better suit a different vocalist that I'm tracking). I personally love the forward setting because it really helps bring out my voice with very little EQ and light compression, sits very well in the mix, and just shines. Very happy with this purchase, I look forward to giving this baby a long run and creating beautiful sonic memories together. Also big thanks to Michael who is (and continues to be) a very helpful associate.

Manley Reference Killer

By Dewayne S. from Kentucky
Music Background: Spoken Word & Hip Hop Artist

This is an updated review. You can see my 2017 review below. I purchased this microphone in August of 2017. I can't lie. When I first got the mic, I like it and then went through a phase of not liking it. I came really close to selling it. Before I purchased this mic, I recorded some rap vocals on a Manley Reference mic, the blue and red one at a professional studio. I was blown away by the quality but not the price...

A few months ago I went to another professional studio who had a Manley Reference microphone. I suggested we do a shootout between the Manley Reference and my Lauten Audio Atlantis FC-387 on the forward position (to which this mic shines). We just recorded raw vocals without any microphone pre-amps or channel strips. When I listened to both vocal takes, I couldn't tell the difference. Months later (today), I listened to both takes in professional headphones and still can't tell the difference. The only slight difference is the Manley has a little bit more top end but a little eq can match it.

The Manley is $... and the Atlantis FC-387 is $... Take the other $... and invest in a good preamp to pair with this microphone. Since I have an Apollo Twin Solo, I mainly use the 610 B Unison Preamp plugin. The preamp that I want to pair with the FC-387 is the Neve Shelford Channel. Also, a good tube preamp would be a good fit.

Pros: The FC-387 is like 27 microphones in one with all the switches and patterns. It's so versatile. You can use it on anything and get really good results.

Cons: The microphone is extremely heavy so you need a strong microphone stand for it which why I gave it 4.5 stars. Since I record at my desk with a desktop microphone stand, I have to use a heavy brick to hold it down. It's not the most attractive microphone compared to the Manley Reference Microphone.

This microphone is underrated so you won't really find it professional studios around the world.

This microphone is truly a Manley Reference Killer.

Sweet

By Marty from San Antonio
Music Background: Audio engineer student/musician

This is my first purchase of a large condenser microphone. Being an audio engineering student I work with some top end condensers in the studio. I have a home studio and needed a dependable condenser at the same time one in my budget. After talking with Ben about my needs he recommend this as a reliable starter mic with great settings and clear recordings, I'm absolutely glad I made the choice. It is an awesome addition along with the Altas pro mic stand and boom. I've used it twice for acoustic and vocal recording. I recommend this for any engineer to add to your microphone collection.

Fantastic Competitor to the Neumann U87

By Jim H. from Carlsbad, CA
Music Background: Advanced Beginner guitar player with a home recording studio

Once again, my Sales Engineer, Ben Robinson, came through when I asked him for a recommendation for a large-diaphragm condenser microphone.
I told Ben I was looking for a voice microphone like a Neumann U87 (the "Industry Standard"), without the $3,500+ price tag.
He suggested I check out some YouTube reviews (check the Lauten review, which compares the Lauten Atlantis to a real Neumann U87, a Neumann U47, and something else).
If you are looking for a slightly warmer sound from a tube microphone, then you should definitely spend the money and get a Neumann U87.
If, however, you are looking for an incredibly accurate microphone that is so close in sound quality to a U87 that you cannot tell the difference if you close your eyes, then I would strongly suggest you consider the Lauten Atlantis (plus, it is about $2,000 cheaper).
It is made in the USA, is as rugged as an armored vehicle, and you will not be disappointed (the padded wooden case is an extra bonus).
Thanks, Ben, for your suggestion!

Lauten Audio Atlantis FC-387 Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone

By DSPOET from Lexington, KY
Music Background: Hip Hop and Spoken Word Artist

I was in the market for a new microphone. I only do hip hop and spoken word vocals. I've tried a lot of different microphones. From the Manley Reference Microphone, Neumann U87, Rode NT1, Samson C01, Shure SM7B, MXL 990, Mojave Audio MA-300, Neumann TLM 102, AKG C-214, Audio Technica 2020, Audio Technica 4050, Baby Blue Bottle, AKG Perception, MXL V67G, SHURE SM57 and AKG D5. Out of those microphones, I really only liked the Audio Technica 4050 and Baby Blue Bottle, good quality microphones in their category and price range. I spent countless hours on youtube watching microphone shoot outs. My current microphone is the Rode NT1. It's ok but it sounds a little brittle and heavy on sibilants. One of my friends had the Slate VMS, but sent it back and heavily advised me not to get. He purchased the Neumann 103. Another local hip hop artist has the Neumann TLM 49. Since I trust both of them, I was now stuck on which one to get.

I called Sweetwater and talked to Nick Lamendola, my rep. We talked about my needs for hip hop and spoken word, how I was considering the TLM 49 or TLM 103. He then asked if I ever heard of the Lauten Audio Atlantis FC-387? I had no clue about that microphone or the company who made it. He explained why it's the perfect microphone for hip hop and spoken word vocals. I told him I would research it and call him back.

I jumped on youtube and behold, this was the same microphone Fab Dupont used in a video with a singer when he was going over the features of the Apollo Twin. I watched this video a lot in the past and always wondered what microphone he used. After much research, I found out that Fab Dupont helped design this microphone. I was sold. Called Nick back and ordered the last demo version less than the full price.

Let me tell you, this microphone is off the chain, especially with my Apollo Twin and unison plugins. The FC-387 is three microphones in one with its three modes of Forward, Neutral, and Gentle. I took this microphone to a real professional studio to do some test vocals on all three different modes. The engineer and I were both blown away. He offered me free studio time just for him to work with the mic more. You can use this microphone for so many different things. For $, you're getting the best bang for your buck.

I never have to worry again about what mic to use because the FC-387 is three in one. I would take this mic over all the Neumanns and then some.

I had the top of the line Mojave -not so great-Its OK

By Duke M.

When I had the top of the line Mojave I expected great things and it left me somewhat flat.
I had to eq my board a little to get that sound I needed. With this Lauten everything on the board is flat.
All EQ and effects are done in the DAW. With the Mojave I had to give it little extra from the board.

Secondly the thing broke on me. Just stopped working. That was it! The last TUBE Mic I would buy.

I was then looking for a great sounding Microphone that did not have a TUBE.

In my own experience every tube mic I have owned, I have had to get rid of.
They all sounded great when new, but when the tube started to fade after getting back from repair
they never sounded the same.

Also don't forget about your mic Pre AMP- that makes all the difference in sound.

Some pre amps just work better with some Microphones and other pre amps don't do the Microphone justice. You have to try it.

I went through bunch of Microphones and when this arrived, well, its still here and working flawlessly.

On ISDN and Source Connect Sessions I get compliments as the engineers on the other end keep asking- WHAT MIC ARE YOU USING?

It's a hard call but you really have to watch it, I think the German Microphones that used to rule are no longer as good as they used to be. They still provide a good sound but not a GREAT SOUND.

Everyone is cutting back where they can. For the Money, I doubt you will go wrong with this Lauten. You will need a heavy duty stand though, as this mic is BIG and Heavy- but seems to be built really well.

Stunning versatile mic

Let me be quite frank. I have a boring, mediocre singing voice. But this mic brings out nuance, depth and warmth that I didn't know possible. I'm a home hobbyist, but I have tried out numerous high end mics and this one just had a warmth to it without feeling like a colored sound. The switches give me multiple options depending on the instrument to dial in the tone I'm looking for. It's a nice match with the Shadow Hills Mono GAMA preamp, which also has multiple settings. Between these two I can get such an amazing range of sounds out of one microphone. No mic is meant for every purpose, but if I only had to pick one, this would be it. And unlike other multi-taskers, you don't get a "good at everything, great at nothing" outcome. The results are truly extraordinary.

Atlantis

By Bruce from Tyler
Music Background: Home studio

Lots of flexibility, warm sounding microphone. For the price I think the AKG 414 is a better microphone. However, the 414 I had broke several times and became so unreliable I had to make a change. So far this is a great vocal Mike and excellent on acoustic guitar.

Excellent Mic

By Steve from Pittsburgh, PA
Music Background: Singer-songwriter, home studio

I have been searching for a mic for vocals for quite a while. I have a UA LA-610 MkII that I bought from my Sweetwater rep, Ben Robinson. I love the strip, but I struggled to find a mic that paired well with it for my voice. After months of consultation and a trip to Gearfrest, where I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Ben about my vocal chain, I decided to purchase the Lauten Atlantis on his recommendation. What a tremendous mic! It was designed for use with DAWs rather than a console and tape. It is highly adaptable, including a capsule that features figure eight, omni and cardioid. But the real winner for me is the Multi-voicing. Whether you are looking for a highly versatile mic, which the Atlantis is, or a mic to solve a particular, this is the right mic. The difference in the quality of my vocal tracks is huge. I strongly recommend the Atlantis!

Reivew of the Lauten Atlantics FC-387 Microphone

By RobG from San Jose, CA
Music Background: Guitarist, Songwriter, Audio Engineer

Lauten Atlantis FC-387
I purchased the Lauten Atlantis FC-387 as my “main” microphone for recording acoustic guitars. I have many makes, models and woods. So I really want to bring out the best audio quality and performance from each guitar. I use a multi-microphone set up – stereo overheads, ribbon in front and the Lauten Atlantis at the 12th-15th fret about 5 to 6 inches from the neck/body. What I really like about the Atlantis is how transparent it is in capturing the “tone” of the wood. The detail and minimal low end build up from the mic is excellent. I run the Atlantis through a Millennia SST-1 preamp with the transformer and tube section. The combination is rich and revealing. The clarity of sonic signature is so detailed that you can hear the tone of the woods and the strings. Trying out various strings, composition, thickness, provided a huge pallet of tones and sounds. And the Atlantis picked it all up. I actually found I could concentrate more on my performance because the sound was so clear and rich. The optional voicing on the Atlantis allows for a “quick change” reference to sus out how different your sound can be with just one switch setting. In balance with the over-heads and a ribbon – a really nice sound. Great job Lauten!

Amazing mic!

By Brad from Utah
Music Background: Home recording engineer/Jazz singer

This mic is simply incredible! With the polar patterns+voicings, it is extremely versitile, and on my list of new gear. I'm actually gonna take it a step further with the UA Twinfinity, to bring in some extra flexability. Giving it the option of either a solid state or tube sounding mic. Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a high end workhorse mic!

Best Versatile Mic under $1500 Period.

By Nathanael D. from Utah
Music Background: Project Studio Owner, Musician, Part-Time Session Engineer

I've owned this microphone for 7-8 months now, and have been trying to learn more about it's strengths and weaknesses. It doesn't really have any weaknesses that I know of. It's non-omni polar patterns feel subjectively "tight" and "focused" much in the same way that more expensive microphones, which is a big deal I've learned over the years...

Let me say what it is not, and this will vindicate the microphone after the one negative review left for it on this page - it does not sound like a tube microphone, at least not a modern tube microphone. It does not have the shiny, airy high frequency sheen that tube mics like the Miktek CV4 or the Mojave MA-200/300 microphones possess. The "forward" voicing position gets it in that ballpark, but the subjective quality is not the same. I would describe it as more of an "iron" sound than a tube sound, even though the Atlantis is transformerless. However, if you hook it up to a good tube preamplifier, you can get some of those qualities, but it's not the same.

That however, is no reason to ding it. The Atlantis is a fine microphone for many different applications, and the voicing switch makes it so much more versatile than any tube mic I've used. With the Gentle voicing position, it sounds a lot like a ribbon microphone, albeit with more complexity in it's coloration. Or perhaps a vintage U47 FET in questionable repair. This position responds very well to high frequency EQ to shape the top end as you wish. The Neutral voicing position, to my ears, is wholly unique, and I can only describe it as a blend of the Forward and Gentle voicings. To me, it's just the SOUND of this microphone, and doesn't sound much like anything else out there. In a good way. The Forward voicing position really boosts the air on the signal, and brings it closer to U87 territory, but with a hint more darkness in the mid-range.

And of course, the really great selling feature is the pad switch, which has a +10 position, something I can't say that I've seen on any other microphone. Not only does this switch not raise the noise floor perceptibly, it also allows you to drive your preamp at a significantly lower gain setting, and allows driving preamps that are otherwise difficult to be driven hard - like the Millennia HV-3D. (Not a typical application of that preamp, but it's an interesting sound.)

As long as you don't see this as a desert island microphone (since it is not transparent or authentically "tube-y,") you will get a lot of mileage out of this wonderful tool. If I was looking to get into the higher end from the sub-$600 project studio microphone fare, and was considering this or the two similarly price tube microphones mentioned earlier, I would start with this, and then get a tube mic later. Get the Mojave if you want something that is very present.

The Atlantis is a microphone you'll never need to sell. It will always offer a character that no other microphone possesses. And it is simply unmatched at any price in it's versatility.

Can't Go Wrong With This Mic

By Keron ". from All Over

I own both a Neumann Tlm 102 and Avantone CV 12 . This Atlantis is a clear winner . With 3 different settings you are sure to find the one that suits you . Whats kool too is that its one of the few mics that you can just plug into your interface and get GREAT results without having to do much tweaking and eqing . The Neutral position is just that Neutral .. and takes boosting of frequencies very very well without getting harsh .. Even the Forward position, which is the brightest of the 3 , isn't harsh at all ..

This thing is built solid like a truck !!!

Lauten Audio Atlantis FC-387

By Sweetwater Customer from Wilmington, North Carolina
Music Background: Songwriter

I have had a recording studio in my home for over 25 years. I have always struggled with getting crisp clean acoustics, particularly vocals in front of the mixing board. I contacted Branden at Sweetwater, told him what I was hoping to accomplish, the Atlantis was among his recommendations. By itself, it was very clean, but I decided to pair it with "Warm Tone Beast", the result was perfection. What I hear on the headphones going in is what comes out on the monitors, without touching the mixing board. For writers that want to quickly lay down perfect sample tracks before the creative juices get derailed screwing with the E.Q. this Mic is for you.

Oh my Goodness!!!!!!

By Jerry from Girard, OH
Music Background: Recording Engineer at Listen Studio

Well - I had my opportunity to record my first vocals on the FC-387 I can simply say I was honestly, blown away by the sound. I paired this microphone up with my Tascam UH-7000 and I thought I was in a different studio. Yes I must say it is everything everyone is making the big hype about. Thank you Lauten Audio and a shout out to Ryan Murphy for recommending and getting it to me so fast.

I never thought I would post a review on anything - couldn't help myself it was that good.

SOLID.

By Jason from san antonio tx.
Music Background: Recording Engineer Hobbyist.

First of all I dont believe anything on earth is 5stars nothing is absolutely perfect.... So Ive owned this mic for a year now I am running it through a daking pre/eq in which I bypassed the EQ mainly because it doesnt need one maybe a hi pass filter but hardly ever. I bought this mic because I was sick of battling nasal vocals I own a mojave ma-200 great mic but it's to bright needs to be eq'd alot with this kind of vocal. I wanted a mic not for guitars, drums, ect. just VOCALS something that centers in on just that and with the three settings it's all I needed I prefer the middle setting. Since Ive had this mic there's no more plosives, nasal vocals, even with heavy compression it hides them all. Put it this way my sweetwater rep calls me from time to time for sales puposes of coarse but I cant think of anything I would or need to buy since I bought this mic perphaps a A Designs Pacifica when I have money to burn. sorry bro but I'm good now and thanks.

Fantastic mic!

By Mark S. from Somerset, Ky
Music Background: studio owner, producer, engineer, artist, 27 years experience.

beautiful design……..fantastic customer service…..all of the advertised features work as described…….all three position switches are usable and provides tremendous versatility.

that's all great….but how does it sound?????

smooth as butter…..i have never heard a mic that gives you back exactly what you put into any better……it does not hype the lows or the high end…..nor does it scoop the mids……you can pretty much use it with little to no EQ, if that's what you are looking for, BUT, if you desire to shape the sound for a particular mix this mic will take eq very well.

the main thing i love about this mic and noticed right away after recording with it was that it became suddenly much easier to place vocals in the mix……they simply just sit better in the mix with this mic.

the mic also sounds wonderful on acoustic guitars as well.

i can't imagine owning anything any better for the money!

A beautiful mic, ignore negative feedback by others

By Jason from Orange County, CA
Music Background: Composer, Signed Artist, Producer

I recently picked up a used Atlantis to try out, which I'm putting up against a Blue Kiwi for my next purchase. I'm not sure which will stay, however I believe the Atlantis to be a high quality product in general. It's built like a tank and oozes quality.
It is very quiet, and hassle free when choosing to eq and compress.
I own a Mojave MA200 which I love, but disagree completely with previous reviewer, as I felt the mojave lacked detail compared to the atlantis. It's more "round" compared to the FET design of the Atlantis.
I think that "smudgy" is very incorrect when pairing an adjective to this beautiful mic. I've got a broad collection of mics, and have never had a mic instantly sound this great on many sources. I hope to keep this mic long term, but the Kiwi is a killer too( granted not nearly as versatile.)
It's the ultimate solution for a high end home studio or professional studio add on. I believe there is relevance to treating the design concept like it's not part of the digital process, as this is where most common people reside day to day. It diffuses the digital consequences of modern production, and sounds smooth and natural. Great job Lauten Audio, thank you Nick L at Sweetwater!

Outstanding quality and value!

By Jonathan A. from Tobaccoville, NC USA
Music Background: Tracking and mix assistant/Audio Engineer.

I was used to working with some very nice and often vintage microphones from helping with several big studios. When it came time to look for a good vocal mic for my own though I couldn't really afford some of what I was used to. This mic wad recommended and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at just how great it sounds and the amount of versatility that is built in. I dare day you won't find. Better mic for your money.

Lauten Atlantis Microphone

By Tracy M. from Youngsville La.
Music Background: Studio Engineer, Musician

Thsi mic is very very warm. Used it on steel guitar and vocals and works great on both. I ran it through a Focusrite mic pre - and didn't care for it - ran the mic by itself and was blown away by the way it sounded alone. Only drawback is you have to stand directly in front of it. Pattern is very tight. But other than that..Awesome mic...

Atlantis - Does it measure up?

By Jason from Los Angeles, CA USA
Music Background: Recording engineer, live event producer

How does this mic measure up? I compared this mic on all three settings against recordings I've made through the same chain using various microphones. On the high end, I listened to recordings done on the U87, and on the low end, I used the AT2020. Also note, I only tested these for vocals, as I mainly record vocals with my home studio set up.

First, the positives. It's very versatile. It's great for the price. For a $1500 microphone, it BELONGS where it sits. As I prefer a more modern, clean sound, I prefer this mic over a tube mic. For a home studio setting, this may be your go-to mic, and it excels in the way that it was advertised. The keyword is versatility, especially if you aren't running your mic through a million things before it gets to your computer.

However...I feel that it spreads itself a little thin with the three settings. In other words, it doesn't EXCEL in one particular setting, especially for male vocals. Once I am out of the neutral setting, it is harder to tweak the recordings done with the Gentle and Forward settings. For example, compressing a Forward recording resulted in a very artificial sound, and it was a bit harsh. Personally, when my recording is done, I will be running it through multiple preamps, compressors, EQs, etc., then applying more digital plug-ins, so I require one solid, transparent microphone with a broader dynamic range.

Verdict? 4 stars. It is a solid microphone and most people should be happy with it. It is slightly darker than other mics I've tried, so we'd recommend this for female vocals.

Very Nice!

By Dave M. from Los Angeles
Music Background: Producer/Engineer/Musician

Ive been looking for a mic to record female vocals that wouldn't enhance the harshness of the upper mids. This mic is pretty sweet. You notice right away that this thing has a great 3D stage and its crystal clear. The three voicing are extremely musical and tasteful. Super SMOOOTH! I have quite a number of mics but this one is at the top of my list for vocals. You can't go wrong with this. You get more than you payed for! It is big and its a bit heavy, I would recommend getting a good stand if you don't have one to go along with it. Ive been pairing this with a UA6176....its just like butter!

Nick Church Knows What He's Doing

By Christopher J. from United States
Music Background: Student, Musician, Vocalist, Future Producer

So far I have recorded male vocals (my own), female vocals, and guitar and I am completely blown away at the versatility of this mic. The vocals and the guitar came out so rich and smooth without sacrificing each timbres personality. I was hesitant about buying this mic with the price tag but my sales engineer, Nick Church, assured me that this would be the best sounding and most versatile mic to add to the studio. AND IT IS!!! I can't wait to track strings, drums, duets... everything with this mic. I totally dig the multi pattern settings as well as the pad control. The only thing I don't like about this mic is its size and weight, but hey that's what boom stands are for. Oh and this comes in a wooden box... pretty classy. Get this mic. Your friends, bandmates, and coworkers will die of jealousy.
