The API 529 borrows many of the features and controls from the company's acclaimed 2500 bus compressor (a Sweetwater favorite) and packs them into a double-wide 500 Series module. This stereo unit features API's patented Thrust circuitry for a punchy low end, along with a New/Old switch that lets you choose between vintage and modern compression characteristics. Old delivers classic feedback compression; New serves up today's more prevalent feed-forward compression. The Auto makeup-gain button lets you adjust ratio and threshold without affecting your output level. Employing both 2510 and 2520 discrete op-amps, the 529 delivers legendary API analog sonics. It's the sound that launched a thousand hits — made-to-measure for the popular 500 Series format.

Surprised there are no other reviews on this beast! Demoed against Shadow Hills and Wes Audio and I have got to say, while Dione was winner for day to day duties on 2 bus, this guy has mojo in spades the other two do not have. With thrust on "loud" (not sure why the chose loud) it adds an excitement to the sound that blows me away in either feed-forward or Feedback mode. While it's most known for adding that aggressive tone to rock n roll tracks, I find on bass heavy hip-hop or dub music it really spreads the sound in the stereo field almost like a harmonizer or a plugin that accentuates the stereo image. Love this thing to death and kept it and the Dione in permanent slots in my rack.
