MOTU 8D USB / AVB Interface with AES3 and S/PDIF Reviews

8-in/8-out AVB/USB Audio Interface, with AES3 and S/PDIF Digital I/O - Mac/PC/iOS

The MOTU 8D interface is a smart USB solution when you need digital connectivity for your DAW, and a compact-yet-powerful way to add I/O to your AVB audio network. It's equipped with two stereo pairs of AES3 digital I/O, plus two stereo pairs of RCA S/PDIF I/O. You also have access to 64 channels of USB I/O, as well as 32 channels of AVB network I/O. Built-in DSP processing allows you to add spot-on emulations of vintage EQs, compressors, reverb, and more, without taxing your host computer and with ultra-low latency. The MOTU 8D can even operate as a standalone mixer, and can be controlled wirelessly via Wi-Fi (router not included).

Works great for AES/EBU-to-USB interfacing

By Brian Murphree from Nashville, TN on November 9, 2020 Music Background: Mastering Engineer

I use this unit in Mastering to convert the output of my Crane Song HEDD-192 AES/EBU output to a USB connection mack to my Mac or PC. Works just fine. The Discovery and Browser configuration tool works fine for routing changes and such. I detect no errors in the conversion process. The headphone jack can be set to provide a suitable output for metering.

Great little unit. The only gripe I have is that should you use the Word Clock In function or AES/EBU Clock In function where the 8D can sync to my HEDD-192 Master clock, the 8D does NOT automatically adjust to changes in clock frequency. It can automatically sync to the clock, but not auto-detect as older MOTU products can, such as the 24CoreIO was able to. You must manually use the faceplate buttons to change the clock. That's frustrating, should you want to place the device in a place where it may not be easily accessible.

possible bios problems

By Sweetwater Customer on March 11, 2024

the xlr connectors in the back do not detect jbl mk1 5 inch monitors(or anything else).under the device tab, all options only display the headphones as output. i don't believe this to be a hardware issue but a bios/software issue. the only detectable output comes from the headphone jack. tech support(motu) already has a ticket out on this issue, but it has been months since any kind of response. its really too bad considering that i chose this interface based on my home studio needs. i was also annoyed that the ethernet connection has to specifically be an AVB ehternet, otherwise it is automatically disabled(it will not function other than updating the firmware over regular ethernet). if that was clear in the advertisement, i would not have purchased this unit.
