La Bella 760FS Deep Talkin' Bass Flatwound Bass Guitar Strings - .045-.105 Standard Long Scale Reviews

.045-.105 Flatwound Hand-polished Stainless Steel 4-string Bass Strings, Standard Long Scale

La Bella's Flatwound Deep Talkin' Bass strings became a top choice for professional bass players all the way back in the 1950s, and their popularity has never wavered. Made from hand-polished stainless steel, these flatwound bass strings deliver a profoundly deep and vibrant tone with all the sustain you could ask for — and they retain their tone well after standard flatwounds have gone dead. No strings on the market play as smooth on a standard electric bass, and they feel absolutely luxurious on a fretless bass. If you're in the market for superior flatwound strings, then La Bella's Flatwound Deep Talkin' Bass strings are it.

Distinctive Tone and Easy on Your Fingers

By Sweetwater Customer from Florida Panhandle
Music Background: Newbie on bass, longtime guitarist

Got these for my Ibanez SR400EQM, and the deep bass tones are much more distinct, IMHO, than the factory supplied round wounds. These flat wounds allow finger slides that are so much smoother than round wounds allow - easier on aging fingers, too!
The silk winding at the machine head end of the strings protect the strings and the machine head from metal-on-metal wear and damage, and also to give a better tuning grip while protecting the windings from unraveling. Glad that I made the switch!

New Forever Fan

By Sean B. from Wisconsin
Music Background: Gigging hobbiest

La Bella's Deep Talkin' Bass flats are everything I want in a flatwound set—and honestly, everything I didn't realize I needed until I tried them. The low end is beautifully clean and smooth, with that unmistakable vintage warmth that just sits perfectly in a mix. What really surprised me, though, is the subtle midrange bump. It gives the tone presence and character without ever feeling harsh or overbearing—just enough to help the bass speak with clarity and authority.
And then there's that touch of brightness. Not zingy, not clanky—just a gentle shimmer that adds definition to the note without compromising the classic flatwound vibe. It's the kind of tonal balance that works for nearly any style and makes your playing feel more expressive.
After putting these on, I can say it without hesitation: I'm a forever fan. La Bella nailed it. If you want flats that feel great, sound rich, and inspire you every time you pick up your bass, these are the ones.

Absolutely insane, deep tone from my p bass with these. They are also smooth as glass and feel really nice. I will never ever get any other strings for my p bass.

Nice flats at a reasonable price

By DC

I have been a big fan of the Thomastik flatwounds on my basses, but they're getting to be silly expensive now. The LaBella strings are very similar in feel and tone, at half the price, so I am going to stick with them, replacing sets of the Thomastik strings as they wear out.

these are the flat wounds to buy

By Stuart O. from Rockland, MA
Music Background: Former band in a van player

I've always heard that there was a Righteous sound when a p bass with flat wounds is played through an Ampeg rig. I'm an Ampeg, PBass with a pick player. I've tried other flat wounds in the past and never understood what the big deal was about. A bass player friend of mine recently said something to the effect that I thought all you p bass guys used flats. For 40 years, I've been a die hard nickel round wound guy. But I had some extra money in the budget and because I respected the guy, I decided to give it another try. I read some reviews, many of which said that flat wounds vary greatly in sound by brand. I now know that from my own experience. The reviews all seem to say LaBella Deep Talking Bass sounded the best. And that they sound even better with age. Got em put em on my Mexican P Bass that's equipted with a Lollar pickup. Now I know what the PBass/Flatwound/Ampeg sound fuss is all about.

The Best Flatwound Bass Strings You Can Buy

By Eric B. from Tennessee
Music Background: Professional bassist for 25 years

I've used Labella's for years, particularly the 760FS and just have never found anything that touches them. I've tried several other Labella models, but the Deep Talkin line just always feels the best to me. I play professionally and have played these strings all over the world..these things just never let me.. Every once in a while ,I'll be tempted to try a different brand or try out round wounds. Then halfway through the first song of a show, I'll always regret it… Try 'em' out and you'll love em' like I do.

Best flatwounds I've used

By Marc from Tucson, AZ
Music Background: Amateur Hobbyist

These strings are quality made, have great attack for flatwounds, and definitely deliver on the "Deep Talkin' Bass." I've used them on every bass I've had and never had an issue; in fact, most drummers I've jammed with prefer the sound of these to the rounds used by other bass players. In my opinion, these offer the best overall bass tone you can get. If you want to be John Entwistle, get rotosounds. If you want to sound smooth and rich, get these.

Really impressive

By Scott

First, a caveat: I've been a guitar player for 30 years and only just picked up the bass in a serious way 3 months ago. That said, I've played several basses and experienced different strings. Round wounds, and DR Nickel flats. The la bella steel flatwounds are incredible. I had never thought about string "craftsmanship" until I put these on my aerodyne p bass. The feel is exceptionally smooth, even among flatwound strings. They break in to be surprisingly supple after a couple weeks of daily playing. The black silk wrap at the ends is a nice color choice because it will "match" any bass. I know some players don't like having certain colors visible on their bass, though I wouldn't care, personally. The tone is mellow, like flats should be, but also very rich and present. Let me put it this way: My aerodyne p bass is brand new to me, but when I crave playing it, I'm thinking more about getting my hands on the strings than the bass itself! That's crazy and completely unexpected. I can't speak to durability bc I've only had them for a month. I hope they last years. Go for it.

Wonderful Strings

By Meredith M. from Lapeer, MI

I don't have a lot of experience with flatwounds, so when I went to order a set for my new Epiphone Bass, everyone said that LaBella were the best. So, I thought, why not buy the best? Then I saw the price. Whew....that's a lot for a set of strings. But, it's Christmas, so I thought, I'll get them.
And wow, I mean, just wow, these strings are amazing. The feel is so smooth. The tone is so punchy and awesome. I've never seen a better made string. They are perfect.
Buy these, you won't regret it.

clear tone, no string noise

By Paulie from Hillsboro, OR
Music Background: regular local gig'r

I had been a round-wound string user for a long time. I had tried flats a long time ago and didn't like the tone I got from them and assumed it was the flat-wound style, not the manufacturer's implementation. Fast-forward to this set of strings. I had done some studio work with my round-wounds and could not completely eliminate the string noise when my fingers moved from fret to fret. Yes this is a technique issue (and finger-print ridges I cannot solve for), but not one I was going to solve quickly. I got this set to try to remedy, swapping them out and hitting the studio. With that background... these strings carried the tone of my G&L 2000 bass extremely well. Unlike my prior experience with flat-wounds, these were full and present even without the active electronics turned on. They did not lack the attack or treble as I expected. Because of the flat-wound, the string noise was completely eliminated. We were able to get clear tracks with the full EQ spectrum (did not have to play with settings to resolve low treble nor string noise). These will be my go-to strings from now on.

Favorite Flatwound Strings

By Alexander T. from Gallatin, TN
Music Background: Music Student

I typically prefer flatwound strings on a lot of my basses and chances are high that if a bass of mine has flats they are these strings. They sound and feel great out of the box and continually get better with age. I've taken these on tour, gigs around town, and concerts; they have never let me down. The tone is consistent and smooth. A great tool for any playing bassist.

Super smooth, slick feeling and sonically very pleasing (cant wait till they die down a little). However, these strings are snug and fell very taught. If speed is your thing these may take a little gettin used to. If you are groove player holding down some sweet R/B lines these are perfect. LaBella flats are my go-to since I started playing bass two years ago. Out of the package, they're bright. But they settle into that warm tone after a couple weeks of playing.

These strings have overtones, which sound musical in many contexts! However, adding light foam at the bridge helps focus the sound for defined, articulate attacks for those of us with lighter touches.

By Luke A. from Woodville, WI

These are by far the BEST flatwound strings out there! They give your P-Bass that thumpy good tone that we all expect from flats on a P. I have them on my Fender '51 Reissue P-Bass as well as my G&L LB-100 and I love them on both!

Great strings! Love the sound of them and their durability.

By Mike L. from Connecticut
Music Background: Blues-loving bass player

Just bought a set of these for a '73 Fender P-bass I recently acquired. I am a big fan of these strings and also have them on two of my other basses, a Fender Jazz Bass and a Hofner Ignition bass. I love the deep tones they put out, as well as the smoothness of them in terms of moving around on the fretboard. They are also quite durable, the ones on my other basses, which I play daily, are probably three years old and still sound great. Would not hesitate to buy them again!

My 'go to' flat bass strings

By Sweetwater Customer

I've bought various versions and lengths of these stainless steel wound flatwounds. Put these on your P-bass and listen to the groove. For my purposes La Bella flats in their various iterations are just what I need for the smooth sound or deep bass. Well done La Bella.

Further, my sales engineer, Tim is hands down the best SE I've worked with at Sweetwater. My impression is the majority of the SEs are very proficient and work as the customers' advocates, but Tim makes it a mission to find what I'm looking for, collaborates with his peers and associates to make things happen. Well done, Tim.

By Jim H. from Kennesaw, GA

My favorite strings for my Fender P Bass and Fender Jazz Bazz. They feel amazing, contribute a lot to the tone, and they last! They're great from day one but they open up even more as you play them. I keep rounds on my Spector for something more aggressive, but the LaBella's are my top choice any day of the week. They are worth the price!

Wow!

By Joe O. from Shoreline, WA
Music Background: Lifelong musician--50 years playing and singing--new to the bass--5 years.

I got these to replace the round wounds on my 70's Jazz with a Precision neck, and all I can say is WOW! What a difference! I know I sound like an advertisement, but I'm just a regular guy who now loves La Bella strings. They're still brand new--I just put them on yesterday--and I can't wait until they're a little more beat up, but there is absolutely no comparison. After about 15 or 20 minutes tweaking the EQ my bass now sounds fantastic and exactly what I wanted: thumpin neck pickup, singing bridge, and loads of character with the two of them together. I'm new to playing the bass and I couldn't put it down. What fun!

Want that classic flatwound sound? This is the string you're looking for! Accept no substitutes!

By Doyle H. from Richmond, VA

I've been playing bass for over 40 years and am a huge fan of classic rock and R&B. To my mind, the bass tones of Donald "Duck" Dunn at Stax, James Jamerson on Motown, and Ronnie Baker on Philadelphia International were the ideals I was always reaching for. So why did it take me close to 40 years to try the strings that they used? Well, part of it was unavailability (when I was growing up, the music stores near me rarely stocked flats and never stocked LaBella's), part of it was frugality (when I could find them online, a set of LaBella's was always more pricey than a similar set of other brands), and part of it was a bad experience with a friend's bass that had been set up with a heavy gauge LaBella's (it was unplayable). But most of it was the idea that one brand of flats should be able to get me the same sound as another brand. Finally, a video by Ed Friedland on You Tube convinced me to make the jump. I opted for the 760FS "standard" gauge as they seemed like a good compromise between the lighter and very heavy gauges that LaBella offers. It was worth the wait. At long last, the sound that propelled most of my favorite music is at my fingertips. Coming up with good bass lines and playing well is still up to me, but it's wonderful, after so many years, to finally have the correct tools for the sound I craved.

I recently bought my first set of flat wound strings (La Bella Deep Talkin' Bass). They are quite a change from round wound. There is much more tension and the feel is completely different (not bad just different). Bottom line is, I was looking for that Motown R&B sound on at least one of my basses and this totally fits the bill. These are the real deal if you want to shoot for that sound. These are the best feeling flats I've played. The "hand polish" these go through makes them extremely smooth and shiny. Their tone is warmer than the d'addario chromes I had on before, so I'm still getting used to the reduction in upper mids and highs, but overall cannot complain. I think I'll settle right in soon enough and I can tell these things will last a long time.

The BEST bass tone!

By Greg
Music Background: Lifelong player

I used to have flat wound strings on just one P bass for a classic setup. Over time, I have realized that flat wound strings just give the bass such a strong classic tone. Really unless you are playing slap, flats just sound better. I have them on Jazz basses and active basses like Music Man. There is such a deep thump and pure tone. I have tried many flats but none sound as good and consistent as La Bella. The La Bella strings are super smooth. Others can have gaps between the windings. La Bella flat wounds also last forever. With round wounds I had to change strings every month or so. I have had my La Bellas on some basses for years. They never lose their tone. I think they describe them perfectly as Deep Talkin Bass!

These are simply the BEST Bass strings I've ever played. You will notice it the moment your hands play them and your ears hear them. There are a lot of good Bass strings out there but there is something special about these...there really is.

LaBella Lowdown

By Don R. from Acworth, GA
Music Background: Professional

I wanted to drop a new set of La Bella's Deep Talkin' flat wounds on my 4 string fretless once my EMG J Set pups came in. Since I wasn't using the well used set I had I put that set of La Bella's on my 4 string fretted and loved that sound. Most of the bass players I grew up listening to used flats in that Motown, Muscle Shoals era. DR MM Fat Beams are what I usually use but I don't like the way round wounds sound on a fretless bass so I ordered a set of DR F45 Legends and a set of La Bella Deep Talkin' flats. (I know that statement isn't going to go over well with some low enders, but they'll get over it)

The DR flats cut right thru like crazy, lows, mids and very crisp highs. I started changing to the La Bella's and stopped at the A string. The DR flats works for me. That is not to say anything bad about the La Bella strings. I believe you have to try a lot of pickups, strings, amps, straps and basses to find what works best for you. Most importantly, they feel really good to my hands both left and right. Right now, DR is it!

La Bella 760FS Deep Talkin' Bass Flatwound Bass Strings

By Sweetwater Customer

If you hate the noise of wound stings, get these! Smooth like butta. If it's good enough for James Jamerson, it's goon enough for me!

Love the vintage tone!

By Rex C. from Joplin, MO

I had these strings put on my Fender American 60"s P Bass. I love the vintage tone and the richness that this set up has. Flat rounds are a joy to play. Real easy on the fingers. You should definitely give them a try!

I love these strings

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Working musician

If you are a bass player that needs a few different types of sound, you need a bass with flatwounds on. I put these on my p bass and fell in live with it all over again. Now it has some serious thump. My band will no longer accept any other strings on my precision.

The sound I was looking for

By Sweetwater Customer

I put these on my new Squier Vintage Modified PJ bass and it is just the sound I have been searching for for a long time. Nice low end thump, very warm and vintage sounding. They also feel great under the fingers, with very little string noise. Love them!

If you want thumpy these strings are great

By Robert from Chapel Hill, NC
Music Background: Serious amateur bassist

I had my technician do a setup and replace the stock Fender roundwounds on my Squier Affinity series jazz bass with these La Bella flats. My goal was to get a vintage, Jamerson bass sound out of this cheap jazz bass. After three days of playing I am very pleased. ...I have a very thumpy sounding jazz bass. There are a number of good brands of flats out there, but I don't regret using these at all.
