High end audio capability in a small package

By Ripfence from Nashville on June 27, 2019

This device is far more capable than it's small size implies. There are tones of routing and options that you can access from a browser or mobile device so you rarely have to mess with the interface itself. It has AVB capability which essentially means it can connect with other AVB devices via an ethernet cable. This is a very cool feature.

The interface has low latency, great mic pres, and works with ASIO and Apple's CoreAudio.

This device is a little more advanced than many Audio Interfaces so you'll probably need to spend some time getting used to it.

Over all, it does all that I need it to do and FAR more.

MOTU 624

By Joey C aka Animus from Brooklyn NYC on August 2, 2017 Music Background: Drum and Bass

I upgrade from an MBox Mini which served me well enough to get releases out on beatport. Why did i upgrade? I wanted 32x88.2 bit/sam. I also needed to route 32 tracks from Maschine into Ableton. The onboard DSP is brutally powerful. I'm operating at 1.5ms RTL at 16x44.1 which is way faster than the 12ms I'm used to. Once I get these current projects out of the way will begin doing 32x88.2 content. Running both DAWs simultaneously with multiple instances of Massive, various Abbey Road Plugins on a 4 year old 3rd gen i7. No pops or glitches. USB3 performs great. If you have a mac you get even more features but even on my windows 10 machine I LOVE IT. My only beef is the atrociously documented OSC support, I eventually got it working but was not simple. The routing Matrix can be confusing but if you come from a live sound background you can figure it out. HURRAY YouTube ;) Wish it came with a proper half rack blank so i could mount this sucker properly in my rack, but that's minor quibble. The performance is killer. Headphone out is kind of weak, but I'm using audio technica r70x which are 600ohm (?). Thanks to AVB I have plenty of expansion opportunities for the future.

Still getting around on it

By Steve Cooper from Indianapolis on July 30, 2019 Music Background: Veteran

I won't give it 5 stars because it is not Thunderbolt 3, but works as Thunderbolt 2 with an adapter on a Windows 10 (Pro, 64 bit) machine.

I've had a couple of glitches, but I seem to have figured out what caused it and can prevent it from happening again. So far it plays well with others ;)

This is a deep interface with a ton of options- a LOT of I/O options. Seriously, the patchbay is fantastic. I haven't tried the mic preamps yet, so I can't comment on them.

I have been loyal to MOTU above any other brand because of their amazing, rock solid drivers for Windows AND Mac (I use both OS's), and the fact that they continue to update drivers for their older (legacy) interfaces. I'll bet you can't name another company that does that- other companies would rather force you to buy new hardware.

Great Features and Sound Quality

By Tall Tim from Portland, Oregon on February 17, 2018 Music Background: Original artist

Needed a new Audio Interface that had a fast connection (Thunderbolt) and multiple Line Inputs to complement my 4-Ch RME preamp. This works great. I am using an older Mac Mini and have no lag and great audio quality. The interface runs off the browser (Safari) and is quite useful once you get the hang of configuring the mixer to match your inputs. I am recording into Reaper and had no setup issues between the 624 and Reaper.

I am only using the Motu 624 as a digital interface (with it's really nice A/D converters), but it has the ability to be a mobile mixer with Wi-Fi potential when connected to a wireless router.

Very happy with the purchase.

Awesome Sound, Stable Win10 ASIO

By Sweetwater Customer on March 20, 2017

The MOTU 624 sounds great to me. The preamps and AD/DA are transparent and detailed.

I'm using it with a Windows 10 laptop. The MOTU ASIO Driver is perfectly stable with the USB 3.0 interface port. I'm using Steinberg Cubase 8 as my DAW sequencer. The two work together well but have some unexpected, quirky behavior in routing that may need some trouble shooting. This added to my slow initial progress.

I have not tested any of the advanced features or the Thunderbolt connection yet so I cannot comment on the many ways to use the MOTU 624.

I subtracted one-half point since the routing grid is complicated and I think MOTU should do more to lessen the steep learning curve.

I can highly recommend this unit but this is limited by my meager experience so far.

Professional Quality with a Few Negatives

By Stacey G from ME on July 5, 2019 Music Background: Hobbyist Musician

Here"s the deal: this is an incredibly well made, high quality audio interface that"s equally at home either on the road or (yes) at home. The converters are top notch, and the preamps will give you sufficient gain for your most common needs; however, with microphones I do use a Cloudlifter to add more clean gain. A few minor issues that I would point out: first, the main volume and the headphone volume share one button/knob, each of which is accessed by depressing the knob. I often turn up the main, instead of the headphones, or vice versa, which is a time waster and a bit annoying. In addition, some of the line and put on the back extremely close together, and certain cable brands do not have enough space to fit side-by-side. Third, the routing of the Motu products required me to contact Sweetwater technical support, as it can be a bit complicated to set up. It company Digital Performer, their proprietary digital audio workstation, but I don"t happen to utilize it, although this could be a benefit for some people. The biggest positive, other than the quality of the interface itself and the top-quality sound it produces, is that you can connect other units with an ethernet cable, and go distances as long as 100 feet or more. I use another MOTU product as a stage box in my home studio, which is approximately 30 feet long, and connecting one to the other with an ethernet cable made my life extremely simple in that regard. Overall, this is a solid four-star product, that admittedly has a learning curve but certainly worth it for home and small studio applications.

Perfect for me If It was not for Two Things

By JL on December 20, 2019 Music Background: Self Taught Musician

I like everything about the 624. You can use it in a home studio or take it along for a performance. It has just the right number, quality, and kind of inputs/outputs for me. The quality of the preamps and converters are good enough for my ears. (I am upgrading from a Tascam 16X08 and use it on a Macbook with Logic Pro).

It would have been perfect if it was not for these two things:

1. You have to research and figure out that you need to buy a thunderbolt 2 cable with a thunderbolt 3 adapter. If I was selling this product I would include the cable and the adapter.

2. The AVB Control software could be friendlier and trouble free. I went through the documentation and the tutorial videos - which helped, but they are not comprehensive enough. In addition, the app seems buggy. I hope they fix this with an update.
