Ryan Murphy
Ryan Murphy
I was hired at Sweetwater in 2005. Before that, I was a musician and audio engineer for 10 years. I was gigging 200 shows a year during that time. Everything I learned on the road and in the studio I apply on the job as a Sales Engineer, and I hope that my experience benefits my customers by enhancing their audio and musical journey.
As your personal contact here at Sweetwater, please let me know anytime I can offer help or advice.

Where are you from originally?
Columbus Ohio to Southwest Florida then to Sweetwater in Fort Wayne.
-
What was your occupation before coming to Sweetwater?
I was a touring guitarist and audio tech.
-
Technical strengths:
Guitars. Basses. Amps. Pedals. Wireless mics. Live Sound. Recording. ProTools.
-
Instruments you play:
Primary instruments are guitar and bass. Some piano, drums & percussion.
-
What in your background prepared you most to help your customers with their audio needs?
I was a full time musician for 10 years before working here. I traveled and played across the USA and Europe so I've met lots of interesting people and experienced lots of cool music.
-
What is your favorite DAW?
ProTools. It is the industry standard. More people are familiar with ProTools which makes it simpler to work in various studios. It is easy to learn and has the all professional features needed to make a project a success.
-
What is your most memorable guitar sale?
Selling a Gibson hollowbody to Eric Clapton. This was before my days at Sweetwater when I would work part time at a local music store between road gigs. We just opened the store for the day and Eric walked right in started looking at guitars. He was truly an eloquent gentleman and I remember being so thrilled to have him in the shop. The best part was hearing him play--it was just awesome.
-
What kind of bands have you played in?
I mostly played in rock bands. Lots of my shows were rock oriented. Most recently I was in a blues band which varied into funk and jazz too. I've also played in various jazz combos for black tie events. The most outside gig I did was with a 7 piece hip hop band. That band was an opening act for an O.A.R. summer tour and we alternated gigs with John Mayer who was another supporting act. That was a fun tour.
-
What do you think is the most important feature of a home studio?
Establishing a solid front end. If you have a professional microphone and mic preamp/channel strip, then you will record the source properly which will save a bunch of time trying to fix it in the mix later. With a poor front end, you will ultimately be recording the source at low quality which will wreak havoc on your mixes.
