Korg monotron DELAY Analog Ribbon Synthesizer Reviews

Lightweight True-analog Ribbon Synthesizer with Internal Speaker, Headphone Jack, Classic Analog Filter, and Space Delay

The Korg monotron DELAY gives you fat, warm analog synth sounds bathed in outrageous Space Delay. Like Korg's classic monotron, monotron DELAY gives you an oscillator, filter, and LFO - but adds a seriously twisted Space Delay that lets you unleash swooping, cosmic sounds that'll put you (and your audiences, if you're a DJ) on another planet. Dial up pitch changes by varying delay time - just like good ol' tape slap. You can even apply the filter or delay to external sounds via the aux input! Pilot yourself to distant galaxies with Korg's monotron DELAY.

monotron delay

By Ruby from Vermont
Music Background: experimental noise

I absolutely LOVE this little machine. it's amazing on its own or to run other sounds through the delay as an fx pedal of sorts.
if you slide the toggle between the square and triangle wave…there is a third secret duo wave! ( Or at least mine has this feature.)
But 2 and give one to a friend.

Fun fun fun!!!

By Gerard B. from Omaha, NE

Great synth to play with and it also makes a great filter to run guitars or Synths through. Very cool sounds!

This thing is really cool and fun - gets super noisy, and I love that you can run audio into it. And the price is great.

Super Fun Sound Design Machine

By Tommy T. from Silver Spring, MD
Music Background: Electronic Music

The Korg Monotron Delay is a very immediate and fun sound design machine and processor. What's especially unique about it is that the filter comes after the delay. You can process incoming audio or the oscillator and control the tone of the repeats with the onboard filter, which is taken from the MS20 synth and is a personal favorite of mine. There is no resonance control to the filter but it's set at a very tasty level. This makes for a very creative sonic landscape. The internal oscillator is a saw waveform and can be modulated with either a triangle or a square LFO. Matched with the delay, this delivers some very spacey and interesting sounds. I would say the Monotron Delay is best suited for external processing and making samples. The ribbon controller doesn't offer any precise control and to get a precise pitch is pretty difficult. The ribbon controller offers continuous control of pitch, so sweeps are possible by running your finger up or down the ribbon. I used mine to make a sample library, incorporating the delay in my sound design as the layering of repeats with the filter and the modulation of the LFO makes for some pretty large sounds. I really like how fast the LFO goes. It goes into the audio range for analog-FM style tones. The real magic of this synth comes with the automation of the parameters, delivering hands on motion to otherwise static sounds. A vast array of sonic textures can VERY easily be coaxed out of this with little prior experience. The Monotron Delay delivers wild sonic textures that are at home in any electronic music track looking for something to give it some grimy analog grit.

Fun Little Synth!

By Charlotte

Been having a blast with this since I got it; I'm loving all the sounds I can make with it. My cats, however, do not seem nearly as amused by the noise machine as I am, haha!

Inexpensive, Compact, fun, full spectrum sounds from a tiny package.

By Charles G.

I'm not a pro, I was introduced to the monotron by one. I had to have my own since in 9th grade I made my own random sound generator small enough to fit in my book bag. The entertainment was that people took a long time figuring out where the strange sounds were coming from :) I wish my old home-made unit could have done as well as the Korg monotron!

Fun little unit, but the headphone output needs improvement

By Graham W. from Penfield, NY

I've had the unit and for about 9 months and have used it only occasionally when something I'm working on calls for it. Unfortunately even after fairly infrequent use, the headphone port began to fail in the middle of a session where I was running guitar through it. Gonna try to crack it open and fix it but it still feels like very bad build quality, though thats not unexpected for such a cheap synth.

Best $ music purchase ever

By Sweetwater Customer from USA

This thing is very fun! The ribbon keyboard sounds very silly and can't be used to play notes, but as a sound FX machine or effects pedal, it's awesome!

Great little synth and effect module

By Jake from Phoenix, AZ
Music Background: Singer/Song Writer/Producer/Synth Nerd

The analog feel of the delay and oscillator is great, but out of the box there is very little melodic control. Coupled with the the delay effect you can make some amazing sounds, but it will be difficult to use as a melodic instrument. However, there is an aux input that allows you to route external audio through the delay, which opens up the possibilities to use this as a delay effect module.

Additionally, there is a big modding community around these little guys, and Korg has designed the circuit boards to be easily augmented which is really cool if you are into the DIY electronics scene.

Would highly recommend if the above sounds appealing, just don't expect to be whipping out blazing synth solos in a song with this little device, it really is more of a SFX maker out of the box.

A toy that's not just a toy!

By Dave

I'm not a keyboard player, and I'm hardly a musician but I do like synthesizers and love making funky/weird/lovely sounds with them. I have a small collection of decent "real" synthesizers that I'm very proud of and use all the time. This little guy was just a toy to add to the mix, but it's so much more!! Frankly, just about every video game or outer-space sound you want to make can be created on this powerful little synth, and with its' own speaker you can just leave it on the coffee table for guests to goof around with. I'd say it can definitely be used for recording or performance purposes too, it's sounds are unique and enjoyable. If you're a synth-head why not try this inexpensive little gadget!? I highly recommend it.

Just get it. If you have even just an ounce of interest in portable analog synthesizers, you'll have so much fun! Check out the 1-min video attached.

Awesome

By Sweetwater Customer

I am fascinated by the change of sounds. Following the diagram from the manual, I have found sounds that I have not heard of before. There's always a new finding.
While the speaker is not loud enough, you can always use earphones or headphones to hear it better. There's also an aux input.
This tiny device cannot be underestimated. It is amazing for how small it is and how powerful it is at the same time. I love the fact that I can carry it on the go, and pull it out whenever I want to create new sounds.
I would recommend the Korg delay monotron to anybody who is fascinated by synthesizers. I would also recommend to anyone who is new to analog synthesizers (myself included).

I appreciate the Sweetwater team, including Mason, for shipping out this product to Puerto Rico. The price (including the tax fee) was cheap compared to Amazon; $66. That price is a giveaway!
I would definitely come back to this store to buy more stuff. I had a great experience getting this product. Although, keep in mind that because of COVID, there may be delays from the mail carriers. Overall, I am satisfied with this product, and with Sweetwater's service.

A gift for my father-in-law, he loves it

By Robert

I fiddled with this device before sending it over to the intended destination. You can create some wicked space sounds with this little board. Knobs are good quality and the ribbon keyboard is adequate for playing a few notes. Using the device as a delay effect with the external audio input worked quite well, I combined it with a volca keys for some fun sounds.

Highly recommend especially for this price!

Powerful effects packed in here

By Sweetwater Customer

This thing is the size of a guitar tuner but it makes some massive and spacey sounds. Classic analog delay from this. Some people complain about the noise, but that is precisely what I'm using it for. Capable of some awesome soundscapes and super fun to play with.

Monotron Madness!

By Kevin K.
Music Background: Experimental hobbyist

This thing provides an endless supply of strange, fascinating sounds. From thunderous bass to shrill screeches. Sometimes it sounds like an overdriven guitar, or an alarm on an alien spaceship. Great fun to play with... meditative in a way.

The other great thing is that it has audio input, so you can use it's filter and delay effects on any sound source. Awesome for ambient style music.

One of the best gifts I've ever recieved

By RobertoJohnson from Bay Area
Music Background: Home recording, touring musician, hobbiest

This thing is so fun! Keep in mind it's a one trick pony but some of the best things are. I'm also a person who could mess with just a delay pedal and guitar for hours. Running things through it is awesome - for me that's my MS-20 Mini, which up until this point has been a pain pairing with any other effects/equipment because of those **** mini jacks but these two were made for each other. No extra power supply or big 1/4" adaptor just sits right next to it or on top. Same goes for iphone/ipad apps - perfectly small and toylike for those kinds of applications. Don't have any of the Volcas but if I did this would be a must have.

Pro tip: great for hooking up and getting noisy at parties.

By Papi B. from Chicago

This lil thing is capable of amazing sounds. It instantly found a place in 3 songs I produced the day it arrived. Great for cool transitions but also an awesome inspiration tool.

Excellent as a filter and inexpensive delay.

By David

With the MS-20 filter built in and the delay with it, the Monotron Delay is excellent as a gritty filtering and spacial effects device. Run a Volca Beats through it's filter and rediscover why they were so fun to begin with.

Get it one now. Get TWO!

By tay0 from Atlanta
Music Background: Experimenter, producer, noise guy

This little weirdo is the most bang for the buck I've gotten in a while. Great for drones, noise beds, sampling, you name it. The delay is amazing. I use everything from vintage analog to modular to high-end virtual synths to iPad stuff, and this little guy winds on price to capability ratio.

Mini Monster!

By Scott from Arizona
Music Background: Hobbyist

This thing is a blast. It's a mini sound FX monster. It's basically like having the soundtrack to Forbidden Planet in a box the size of a large smart phone. It's also quite amazing just how much variation you can get, given the minimal controls. Build quality is also surprisingly good. The creaky plastic case and wiggly knobs I expected before purchase are both pleasantly absent.

As far as the audible output hiss, yes, it is definitely there, but I don't see it as a negative at all. It adds a nice dirty, grungy quality to the sound that somehow "fits" this little guy. It also add a lot of character to the delay feedback in its own right. In fact, having grown up listening to LPs and cassettes, I find the hiss brings back good memories of my youth. I also see the multi-octave ribbon as a plus, considering this box's obvious dedication to bizarre sound fx. It allows really beautiful and dramatic cascading note effects that really fit the character of this particular memeber of the Monotron series.

The only real complaint I can level at this device is that the built-in speaker is not up to the task. Low notes are nearly inaudible and the speaker buzzes and distorts when you get to wild with the delay feedback. Not a huge deal, as I plan to run this through my mixer and powered monitors 90% of the time, and a good set of phones or buds takes care of the issue for on-the-go use.

As in the past, dealing with Sweetwater was a pleasure. Excellent communication via phone and email, fast shipping, and even a handful of candy in the shipping box. You can't go wrong with Sweetwater. Thanks, guys!

Now of Korg would only grant my wish for a Monotribe Plus with two oscillators, a dedicated S&H section, and two 16 step tracks for the synth section...Ah, well...

the cherry on top!

By Ken S. from drexel hill, PA
Music Background: sound sculptor

i have all three monotrons and the monotribe and each one is hours of awesome fun on their own as well as hooked up together. yes the delay does add some noise to the signal, but the analog delay on this thing negates any complaint. wicked awesome delay adds depth and dimension to any sound going thru this. did i forget the cuttoff filter... another added bonus! buy it!!

Monotron Delay

By Ty
Music Background: Professional Musician

Love this little machine. Since starting it up fresh out of the box a month ago, it's been my little noisy companion. The device is small enough to go anywhere, anytime, and the headphone jack lets you create sounds in my own private audio space.
Rated 3.5/5 because the output isn't balanced super well—the signal can be really soft or really hot depending on how the parameters are played with. Self-oscillating maxes the output and really distorts the signal, which isn't necessarily a bad thing once you learn how to control the unit.
I tried running my keyboard through the input to play with the delay and filter, but was disappointed to find that the signal clips at a very low level.
The worst thing is the noise level compared to the actual line signal. It's not necessarily noticeable running through the built-in speaker, but through headphones or running to an amp or recording interface, the incessant hiss is kind of annoying.
Still, this is a great little analog noise toy that's a cheap and fun way to mess around with sound! Lots of fun features for a compact and cheap device, but not even close to something that's 'studio quality.'

Great Delay!

By Jesse H. from Missoula, MT

This is a fun little piece. It does need to be used in tandem with other gadgets, otherwise it is just a noise maker. A super fun noise maker though it is.

Sorry for the DELAY

By King J. from Tampa Florida
Music Background: Mixing and Mastering Engineer, Producer, Studio Recording Artist, Songwriter

Awesome little piece of equipment, I mainly use it for Song Intros for Live gigs... works perfectly, just wish that you could set the Time of the delay or the Rate to a set BPM... that my only wish. But still, it's worth it, just to play around if nothing else. In fact, my son won't stop playing...
